Starting point is 00:00:00 Doug hates candy wrappers, screaming babies, sticky seeds with 50 acid pop or kernels in his teeth. There's still not one that he won't see, cause Doug loves movies! Hey, hey, hey everybody! My name is Doug and I love movies. This is Doug Loves Movies, recording on sunday afternoon january 14th 2023 my guests today are a newbie and a couple of old bees recent old bees i dare say uh they are cory ryan forrester mary santora and dusty slay hello. Hello, everybody. Hello. What's up, Doug? All right. Let's meet everybody individually in alphabetical order by first name.
Starting point is 00:00:55 We first met this gentleman at the Improv in D.C. That was his first time on the show, I believe. It's Corey Ryan Forrester. Happy New Year. Happy New Year, my friend. I think we've got, according to Larry David, three or two more days that we can say that, I think. But Happy New Year, nonetheless. I'm pushing it.
Starting point is 00:01:16 I'm going to go. I'm going to see how long I can go before people start to really resist it. Because I still seemas lights up in some some spots with your personality if you say happy to new someone new year to someone in june they're gonna be like yeah that he probably just found out that tracks exactly uh but thanks for being here dude was i right it was the first time you're on the show i was in dc that was your uh your buddy trey that's right that was the first time and i've done a couple remotes with you since but uh yeah that was uh i got uh absolutely dusted by brandon collins oh yeah brando he's a he's a real ringer on the show like when he comes in he comes in he uh he
Starting point is 00:01:58 really uh rules and uh so he's been he's been banned from no he'll be back um our next guest is the aforementioned first timer it's great to have you dude or there wherever you are that's dusty sleigh happy new year all right happy new year i'm pumped to be here uh and my neighbor still has their christmas decorations up so that's what I'm talking about. Yeah, they went up in waves. He put up the Christmas decorations in waves, and now they're kind of coming down in waves. So we don't know how long these next ones will be up.
Starting point is 00:02:37 I guess it's a process. Everybody has their – It is funny that Christmas lights take so long to come down and Christmas trees, because I think a's just it is funny that christmas lights takes a lot to come down and and christmas trees because i think a lot of it is just that it's just no fun to clean up when it's over you know it's done and then you have a mess that you have something you have a chore you have to do to you know and it's not a celebration anymore it's just putting it away again yeah it's always fun to take things out of a box it's not as fun to put them back in the box yeah and as you're putting them in the box you also know
Starting point is 00:03:10 that you're fucking yourself over for next year because shit's so tangled yes absolutely because you're not going to untangle it now no now's when the tangling begins yeah let the tangling it's tangling month january tangling month and she first joined us at the improv in dc i think so mary santora is that true um i i was either the dc improv or it was um over covid i know i did worldwide of Dugs over COVID, but I don't remember. We can go with DC and Prev. That works. I think that was where it happened. I mean, I know we definitely did this together there at some point.
Starting point is 00:03:55 Yes. And Happy New Year to you as well. Happy New Year. Before we get into our games today, let's talk top films of 23. I would like each of you, and again, we'll go in the same order we just went in the introductions. I'd like each of you to name, if you can.
Starting point is 00:04:18 I know this is a tough question. It's real hardball. Your favorite and or best movie from last year from 2023 cory do you have i do the cliche one is probably what i'm going to end up going with which is oppenheimer uh i love the holdovers though and also the weird al movie but like dude christopher nolan's my guy it was uh it was great i really enjoyed it it was that movie could have easily been boring and it was not. Yeah, I agree with you about that could easily have been boring part. He did dodge the it's not boring. I agree with you on that. But I just don't have the Oppenheimer fever that a lot of people have.
Starting point is 00:05:03 What's your what do you think is the main reason why you feel so passionate about it? I'm a huge, you know, I grew up in a civil war town, a hard brag. Okay. That's enough. That's it. That's all you gotta know. They're taking down history. Yeah. Well, no, I'm just saying I grew up and I've just always been a history dude. And I love I think more movies should be shot in black and white. Like it just it just does it for me.
Starting point is 00:05:31 It makes me feel like I'm getting smarter as I'm watching a thing. Well, you can't possibly feel that way about did you like Mank? I did like Mank, but I'm obsessed. But I'm obsessed with the whole Orson Welles story. And I love, you know, like any Hollywood liberal elite douchebag, I love movies about movies and Hollywood. And I just think that you could put like if Gary Oldman had been in Cats, Cats would have somehow been good. You know, that's how I feel. Have you seen Tiptoes? I keep hearing about it. And I'm so glad you just mentioned that. That's the one where he plays a little person, correct? That is correct. I have I hear they keep trying to bury it, but surely I can find it somewhere. Can you send me a DVD or a VHS?
Starting point is 00:06:16 I don't have any copies of it, but it's out there. We watched it recently at a Benson movie interruption here in Los Angeles. And we all just me and all the other panelists had not seen it yet and our jaws were just on the ground most of the movie because it's just it's baffling that they would that they made this movie like they thought it was a good idea but also it is you know it's terrible because just because it's so weird you know like like it's not like there was a longer cut of the movie that played at the can film festival like that's how important the movie seemed at the time because gary oldman mcconaughey beckonsale dinklage like it has an amazing cast and then they're doing this weird movie where everyone's pretending that gary oldman is a dwarf it's so strange but he is he gives a good performance he's supposed to be he's supposed
Starting point is 00:07:10 to be mcconaughey's brother mcconaughey's like quote-unquote regular size and he's a dwarf and they're brothers and and so goldman really gets into being like he's like a dwarf mcconaughey like His performance is so good. And it's not cartoony. It's crazy. The dedication he put into something that should just never have happened. But anyway, I could go on about this movie forever.
Starting point is 00:07:36 But it's definitely, if you're a diehard Goldman fan, you should definitely check it out because he's good in it, but it's also crazy weird. I will report back. I'm going to watch that. should definitely check it out because he's good in it, but it's also crazy weird. I will report back. I'm going to watch that. Yeah, it's really something. It's got one of the better endings I've seen in a while.
Starting point is 00:07:56 I'll tell you that. Short movie or long? Well, that's really in bad taste to ask me that. Yeah. I think it's a pretty tight, I should say it's a pretty loose 90 minutes. It feels kind of slow, and it's 90 minutes, but it might be two hours.
Starting point is 00:08:16 But it's definitely two or under because, like I said, the original cut was three hours. Oh my God! It played at the Cannes Film Festival. And I don't know if it got a standing ovation or anything, but the people, the producers behind it, the producers behind it took the movie away from the director.
Starting point is 00:08:35 And I don't think he's ever really made a movie since. They took it away from him and recut it and released it. And those who've seen the long version say it's a lot better which makes sense because the movie probably makes more sense over three hours but that also feels like excruciating extra hours not needed but speaking of excruciating hours oppenheimer i did like it a lot and you know of course ro of course, Robert Downey Jr.'s, you know, probably going to win the Oscar for it. And it's just that feels like he's fantastic in it. But I think that he just as much deserved an award for bringing good acting to Marvel films.
Starting point is 00:09:19 Yeah, right. And Tropic Thunder. Well, yeah, he was he was nominated for Supporting Actor in that movie. So Oscars, so white. Dusty, what's your, do you have a pick of a favorite film from last year? Wow, you guys really love movies, and I like that about you. It's called Doug Loves Movies. I know, and you guys really do love it and I appreciate that uh thank you Mary uh but the um um you know I looked at a list while you guys were talking of
Starting point is 00:09:56 movies that came out in 2023 and I think the only 2023 movie I watched was Shazam Fury of the Gods. And I liked it. I thought it was a fun movie. I thought it was very fun. Probably not going to be winning any Oscars. If I were to bet, I would say that's probably not going to win any kind of award. Not even best superhero movie of any kind of award um not even uh best uh superhero movie of any kind but i did like it i'm a big how did you when kids turn into a superhero and you know have to battle some
Starting point is 00:10:37 ancient goddesses so if that's the only movie you think you saw last year. That came out last year. I watched old ones. Right. So that's what you do is you're more of a hotel room road comic movie watcher than like going out to the to the cinemas. Yeah, I like to sit in my hotel and go. Well, I have I have a three hour flight tomorrow. sit in my hotel and go, well, I have a three-hour flight tomorrow. What movies can I download off Hulu to watch on the plane ride? Now, I used to like a lot of movies. I like to go to the theater.
Starting point is 00:11:13 I don't like movies as much as I used to like them. That's, I'm a cinema fan. I like movies from the 70s. Great time for movies. Those are really fun movies. Really well made. A lot of long shots. A lot of, it is always kind of gritty. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:44 Everything seemed kind of seedy in movies in the 70s. I just watched the movie, you know, Saturday Night Fever with John Travolta. I had never really watched that before. Really? Yeah. Some shocking things in there. But it's wildly eye opening. Like I would back when that movie came out like it was just
Starting point is 00:12:06 such the music and disco was such a big thing that it really overshadowed what a dark uh movie filled with horrible characters that it is yeah you know and and the great thing to me is it's like you know i feel like in every movie now if there were a dancing movie now everybody would be professional dancers they would all be amazing and it would be like wow can you believe this but in saturday night fever they were all just pretty good and it felt real it felt like oh this guy would be a really good dancer in the club but if you like for seeing a professional dancing show you'd be like this is okay right they just had the fever they weren't professionals but they were sick with it exactly they couldn't help it yeah and it felt good i mean like you you get to see like
Starting point is 00:12:59 john travolta's character he's a real loser in life but when he walks into this club that's where he comes alive and i like that i had a lot of fun with that movie and i did watch that in 2023 that sounds like a comedian you just described a comedian he's a real loser in real life but when he gets into the club by god he turns it on and maybe that's why i liked it so much. I was like, I relate to this character. Yeah, I agree. That's a really strong insight. Mary? How do you follow Shazam?
Starting point is 00:13:38 I have no idea. Honestly, historically, Doug, you do not like any of the movies that i like uh every time i say i like a movie you're like that's the worst movie i've ever heard um but i i am not a huge moviegoer but the one i did see that i think struck me so hard that i loved so much for nostalgia reasons was the super mario brothers movie okay okay movie i found it very uh enjoyable i also saw it with my boyfriend and his uh seven-year-old daughter so it was there was an added level of like oh my god i played all these video games growing up i saw the old you know one from however long ago that was terrible in the 90s. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:25 So I had my nostalgia, but then also sharing it with my boyfriend's daughter and her like experiencing it for the first time. It was a very amazing experience, like all around. I was like, oh, my God, look at this bridge and generational gaps and everything. But I'd say that was probably the top one I saw. Are you trying to suggest that the snubbed Oscar film and Dennis Hopper vehicle of the Super Mario Brothers of the 90s didn't tickle your fancy? Because I loved it.
Starting point is 00:14:50 I support any Dennis Hopper. Amen. It was fine, but as like a six-year-old girl, pretty creepy. Corey has to be kidding. I am, yeah. I mean, Dennis Hopper is fun to watch in anything, but just take his scenes out I mean take it all I just it's just like I mean obviously when they said when Super Mario Brothers
Starting point is 00:15:14 was coming out people got all upset when it was like Chris Pratt it's gonna be the voice you know but he does an all right uh job with it but it's just funny that people got mad at that but back when super mario brothers came out i don't remember anybody being mad about bob hoskins and john leguizamo but you know they aren't particularly great uh casting right well they were talking about needing an italian voice but like the dude who does super mario for nintendo is just a old white guy with a beard so like that's been the standard yeah it's a me i mean it's not that hard to do you know but uh for some reason that the whole movie is just so charming and fun i was really pleasantly surprised because i went in thinking
Starting point is 00:15:58 i'll just like this you know i didn't think i would love it because i'm just not that into video games or nostalgia for that particular game or those games. You know, I was more I was mostly a Mario Kart person for a sad amount of time. But I was actually shocked when I was watching that movie because I played a lot of Donkey Kong on Super Nintendo with like Donkey Kong Country. And then the one where like Donkey Kong is captured and his kids have to save him so when when they like introduced donkey kong i got chills and i was like oh man like i'm deeper connected to donkey kong than i thought i was like and jack black should win best original song for peaches. Right. It feels like there's a kind of a chance that that, it feels like a nomination is definitely in the works
Starting point is 00:16:51 and getting to see him sing it on the Oscars would be so much fun. Practically, just when you're watching the movie, it's probably like watching Jack Black do it. You could tell that they really made the animation match his expressions and stuff. could tell that they really made the animation you know match like his expressions and stuff um but what's the there's got to be a song that's going to beat it though for the actual uh oh yeah it's going to be the billy eilish barbie song i was going to say probably something from barbie yeah no the billy eilish song is from barbie will be nominated the dualipa song from barbie will be nominated but but billy eilish from Barbie will be nominated, but Billie Eilish, I think, will probably
Starting point is 00:17:25 win. Although that would be, it's weird because in that case, they should just go ahead and give it to somebody else because she just won for No Time to Die or whatever that James Bond movie was called. Okay. Great suggestions for
Starting point is 00:17:41 best movie of the year. No songs from Shazam you think will be winning. No, I don't. I don't think so, dude. I don't think so. But these three suggestions that you've made, I've been asking all of my guests for a few weeks now to name their favorite movie,
Starting point is 00:18:00 and these are all three first-time mentions, I think, of all three of these films. We've had repeats with a lot of people love the spider-man across the universe right that's come up a few times and of course the holdovers uh which i have not seen yet so i'm excited to have that to uh look forward to um let's take a break and And when we come back, we are going to get into some games. And I'm very excited about this because Dusty sounds like you know a lot of movie trivia. Oh, yeah. I can't. I'm so pumped.
Starting point is 00:18:39 All right. Well, cool your jets for a little bit. We'll be right back. We are back. And the first game we're going to play today. Now, of course, today is going to be about a lot about, you know, going ahead and guessing what the answer might be. So there's going to be some multiple choice in this first game. And then the second game, just trying to, you know, put everybody at ease.
Starting point is 00:19:03 And then the second game, I'm just trying to put everybody at ease. The second game is going to be like, it's not centered around current movies per se. So if you have any kind of history with movies, which I know you all have, then you may fare well. But gamblers are all putting their money on Corey. Okay, here we go. The first game we're going to play is called North or South Dakota. Super simple game. I'll say a film title. And then you tell me if it's a movie that featured Dakota Fanning, Dakota Johnson, or neither. So you have a pretty good shot, you know, 33% chance of getting it right, whichever one you guess. Can we give any kind of hint to who Dakota Johnson is?
Starting point is 00:20:03 Can we give any kind of hint to who Dakota Johnson is? Yes. Dakota Johnson is Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson's daughter, who is best known for being in the Fifty Shades of Grey movies. Okay. All right. I do know. But you're clear on Dakota Fanning, though. I do know Dakota Fanning.
Starting point is 00:20:18 Okay, good. And so Corey will be up first. And if he misses, then Dusty gets a shot so then he's got a 50 50 shot then if he misses mary will get the gimme point all right she won't have to do shit and then uh whenever somebody gets the point the next round starts with the next person and the first person to three points wins the game. Corey, are you ready? Oh, as ready as I will ever be, Doug. Fanning, Johnson, or neither, a motion picture called Tomcats.
Starting point is 00:20:59 Tomcats. Okay. I have never heard of Tomcats. I was counting on that. I'm, oh my God. I just have to throw a random guess out there and say Dakota Fanning. Well, you know, it doesn't have to be random. You know, Tomcats might have some sort of hint in that one word, but you're going to go dakota i'm gonna go with dakota fanning fanning yes dakota's yes so okay so you're saying fanning is i'm saying cats that's your answer you're sticking with it here we go that is correct yes all right good job
Starting point is 00:21:43 you nailed it cory right out of the gate. Tom Katz featured Dakota Fanning. Don't know how big her part was, but it's from 2001, and she's credited as little girl in park. Oh, wow. In a small part. It's a good thing you didn't. If you gave the year, I would have definitely known.
Starting point is 00:22:01 But, yeah, right on. Yeah, I'm not giving no years. If little girl in park is a big role, then I would say there's like not a lot of characters in the movie. Right. Yeah. There's like man in park. Little girl in park. And a cat.
Starting point is 00:22:22 Maybe a cat, like a male cat. That's real wild. I cannot get enough of how movies, when there's a dog or cat that's in enough to have a name in the movie. I love in the credits where it tells you the dog's real name. Oh, yeah. In the credits with all the people. I love that they include that. Okay. Well, the dog wants to brag to his friends.
Starting point is 00:22:50 Exactly. Corey has a point. We start now the second round. Dusty gets to go first. Tell me if it's a Fanning, a Johnson, or neither. Sweet home Alabama. I'm going to go with neither. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:23:17 That is incorrect. Dang. But it was a terrific guess. You picked one of the three. 53%. Yeah. a terrific guess. You really picked one of the three. Wow. Yeah. Mary, there's two options left. I'm going to go Fanning. Or Johnson. Fanning.
Starting point is 00:23:35 You think Fanning again? She's blonde. Reese Witherspoon was blonde. I never saw this movie. There's probably some sort of connection. It's her niece or her daughter or something. It's a great movie. It's a lot of fun. Oh, you know what? Now that we're talking about it, if I could, I think I know the answer now. But I've already lost.
Starting point is 00:23:58 Okay. So, Barry's going with Fanning, though. Do you agree with that? I do agree with that. Yeah, you're both right. Hey! Yeah. We did it.
Starting point is 00:24:09 It's like Guy's daughter, isn't it? No, she played, I believe, was Reese Witherspoon's name Melanie? Yes, I believe that's correct. And then Josh Lucas was, I can't remember. Because she played young Melanie. So it's probably like a flashback to show what a bright little girl she Melanie. It's probably a flashback. When they get struck by lightning. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:24:32 Barry's on the board. Barry's got one point. Now we move to Corey. The motion picture. These could get easier or harder. I don't know which direction it's going to go. Crazy in Alabama. Crazy in Alabama. sure these could get easier or harder i don't know which direction it's gonna go crazy in alabama crazy in alabama oh you asked okay well surely dakota fanning was not in two movies about alabama um have you seen house of gucci and ferrari uh yeah no i have not actually
Starting point is 00:25:06 um because adam driver is in two movies you pick some real white trash movies white trash cast here yeah he picked the right cast for these though you've already done neither it's it's fanning or johnson correct um you're the first one. You're the first guest. It's wide open now. It's wide open. No, I'm saying those are the two. I couldn't remember. It's Dakota Johnson.
Starting point is 00:25:29 Yeah, Don Johnson's daughter. Okay. I've never seen the movie. It's Johnson, Fanning, or neither. Yeah, I've never seen the movie. I'm not too familiar with her work, but just based on the answers so far, I'm just going to throw out Johnson. I'm probably wrong.
Starting point is 00:25:41 It's probably neither, but I'll go Johnson. Incorrect. Dusty, this is I'll go Johnson. Incorrect. Dusty, this is your chance, man. All right. Here we go. Put some points on the board. I'm going neither. All right.
Starting point is 00:25:59 Fanning for the win. I'm going to go Fanning. Wait, what? What just happened? I said Johnson, and you told me I was wrong. And then Dusty said. You're right. It was Johnson.
Starting point is 00:26:11 I'm sorry. Oh, wait. It was so fun to press the button. You got excited there. I got too excited. Yeah. Come on. All right.
Starting point is 00:26:21 So. Okay. So there never was a shot for me on that one. No. No, there wasn't. I screwed it up because, yeah, it's. I was, you know, I was trying to push for the idea that it could be the same actress in both. So that's why I got confused.
Starting point is 00:26:40 But, yeah, Johnson, I believe that was like maybe her first time on screen was in in that thing called crazy in alabama all right when was this movie from i've never i thought i was me and dusty should know every movie that has the word alabama in it and i don't never i would think so yeah never heard of it i want to say that crazy alabama uh stars her mother i want to say that Crazy Alabama stars her mother. I want to say Amelia Griffiths might be the star of it. Total hottie. But it's definitely not. It's definitely a goofy-ass movie from when Dakota Johnson was young. All right, so Corey's got two.
Starting point is 00:27:17 And Dusty, now here's your chance once again to get on the board and tell me if it's Johnson fanning or neither the social network I'm gonna go I'm going Johnson Johnson on social network did you ever see it never saw it well great guess. Boom! Hey! Is she one of the girlfriends? She is the girl who sleeps with Justin Timberlake as Johnny Napster. I figure if she's in Fifty Shades of Grey, she's got to be in the social network. Context clues.
Starting point is 00:28:03 That's my logic. at work context yeah yeah it was she's yeah she she has like one scene where she just realized she realizes she slept with the guy who created napster when they get up in the morning she's getting ready to go to class and johnson likes to do a lot of banging what can you say yeah i mean you know i think she got her parents are both like in a lot of highly sexualized roles so like i think it just runs in the family yeah yeah he's my mom's number one hall pass for my dad oh really yeah and my dad's for her is vince gill he gets to bang vince gill if he ever gets the chance all right All right. What a voice. Amen.
Starting point is 00:28:48 All right. Dusty's on the board. Great job, Dusty. Mary. Thank you. Is it Fanning, Johnson, or neither in a motion picture called Ugly Bug Ball? Ugly Bug Ball. Yeah. in a motion picture called ugly bug ball ugly bug ball yeah i don't even know what this could be i love what you say because it's like what the hell does that even mean because it's an ugly ball of bugs does an ugly bug own ball? Is it a ball where they go dancing for ugly
Starting point is 00:29:25 bugs? I think it's an event. I think it's an event for ugly bugs. Okay. It's an event. Some bugs deem as uglier. Ugly bugs. I'm going to... What's your answer?
Starting point is 00:29:43 I'm going to say Dakota Fanning. Dakota Fanning. Okay, let me get the right button this time. I don't going to say Dakota Fanning. Dakota Fanning. Okay, let me get the right button this time. I don't want to screw this up again. Dakota Fanning was not in Ugly Bug Ball. Corey, for the win. Jesus.
Starting point is 00:29:59 No way that's a real movie. Neither? Yeah, I think Doug made it up, so therefore it's neither. I love Mary helping the next contestant in line. Thank you. I'm already out. She misses. That is correct.
Starting point is 00:30:17 It is neither. That's not a movie. You really did make it up. I don't do it a lot, but every once in a while, I just work Ugly Bug Ball into a game just because I just heard that once, and it's just stuck with me. It would be so funny if I was like, you know, I haven't seen it in a long time, but I feel like that's a Dakota Johnson joint.
Starting point is 00:30:42 I remember when – I thought it was maybe like a Pixar short where the ugly bugs get to go. You know what I mean? Yeah. That's the next movie I'm pitching. It sounds like something that could exist. I want it to be a sitcom. I'm going to pitch it next time I'm in LA.
Starting point is 00:30:59 It'd be funny if in the world of bugs, they really do like some find other bugs more or less attractive oh that bug's really ugly oh yeah you're a cockroach okay so congratulations uh uh cory won that one all right well this will be the last points i get i assure you yeah well then i also picked out a couple more we didn't get to him a couple more dakota johnsons that like i guess she were early in her career and so not they're not movies that are memorable especially not for her being in
Starting point is 00:31:37 them uh one was called beastly and um uh another one with uh vanessa hudgens was the star of that. And then the other one, she's in a movie with a good cast that now I'm kind of intrigued by from 2012 called Goats. Oh, hello. Yeah. So I don't know if there's actual goats in it or if they're all just people
Starting point is 00:32:00 that are outstanding in their field. I heard that's the Fifty Shades of Grey sequel. I know greatest of all time stands for, I mean, you know, goat stands for greatest of all time, but I love more the idea that someone's called a goat because they're outstanding in their field. Oh my God.
Starting point is 00:32:18 I just got it. Like physically standing in a field. Yeah. Like a goat. Yeah. I was thinking greatest of all time in a field. Yeah, like a goat. Yeah. I was thinking greatest of all time in their field. Yeah. All right.
Starting point is 00:32:32 I'll tell you what Corey won right after we get back from the break. We will be right back. We are back, and Corey won nothing. Yeah, I didn't think so. Wow. I mean, you win bragging rights because you won a game called North or South Dakota. And to be honest with you, I don't know which one of the two ladies would be North and which one would be South. But you do get to go first.
Starting point is 00:32:59 Oh, yay. I get to lose immediately. In our final game today. Not necessarily. You never know. Going first could be an advantage. Could work against you. Well, I've never won on this show,
Starting point is 00:33:11 so I'm just thinking that I'll continue that streak. Oh, this is perfect. This is perfect. Somebody will have their first win. Yeah. Oh, this is exciting. This is great. Okay.
Starting point is 00:33:24 This game is called The Little Search Engine That Could. And here's how it works. I typed a word into the search engine on the Internet Movie Database, IMDB. IMDB. Then I wrote down the top ten movies on the list, according to a popularity list, basically, according to the IMDb. I wrote down all the movies that have that word in the title.
Starting point is 00:34:00 Your job is to guess titles with that word in it, and the higher up that title landed on the list, the more points you get. So for number one, you'd get 10 points for number 10 you get one point then all those points available in between there's three rounds you'll each get three guesses we'll start with cory and then we flip the order from the last game so we go cory then mary then Dusty and just each guest movies that have this word in the title. Here we go.
Starting point is 00:34:30 We'll see how it works out. Starting, like I said, with Corey. Since we're in the season of holidays like New Year's Day, President's Day, Super Bowl Day, the word I picked was football. No, the word i pick is day oh boy
Starting point is 00:34:48 and it's just it's day completely on its own but in you know either the beginning or end or middle of the title and no there's nothing like daylights or or you know daylight or uh living daylights the bond movie like no words with day in. It's just the word day on its own in a title. Some massively famous and popular movies have been searched with the word day in the title. Corey, what do you think
Starting point is 00:35:16 might be number one? The most, and this is as of today, because the algorithm is always up to date. Training day? Maybe? I get three guesses?
Starting point is 00:35:31 No, you just get one now and then we'll come back to you. Okay. It turns guessing so everybody gets a chance to get in there before Corey takes all the good ones. That's probably not yeah. I'll say training day although as I'm saying it, I think one's more popular.
Starting point is 00:35:49 Don't say another one. Out to Training Day. That'll just help somebody else. Training Day. Well, you know, for as unsure as you are, boy, that sure did work out. It is number two on the list. Nine points
Starting point is 00:36:07 for Corey, Ryan, Forrester, Mary. Did you see Training Day? I did. Forever ago. That was going to be my guess. That was your number one guess? That was my number one guess. My second guess, which I don't think is going to be as high up on the list,
Starting point is 00:36:24 Independence Day. Oh, good answer. I bet that's number one guess my second guess which i don't think is going to be as high up on the list independence day oh good answer i bet that's number one well i bet i don't have to bet because i know exactly where it landed and it is at number four mary you just scored seven points Okay Independence Day Dusty, have you seen any Oh yeah, I've seen all these movies In your hotel room So much fun, I've seen all of these so far All great movies
Starting point is 00:36:58 I'm gonna go with The Day the Earth Stood Steel Oh, good answer I said steel, but I mean still. Well, you know, you have fun with words. Yes. And there's lots of fun words in that movie, like patu barata nicto and other alien praises.
Starting point is 00:37:27 But, unfortunately, Dusty did not make the top ten movies with Day in the title. But you're going to still get two more guesses. I've never even heard of that. It's still everybody's game.
Starting point is 00:37:42 It was a classic black and white film about aliens coming to earth and of course the u.s military just starts shooting at them and then they come out and go hey you know we weren't gonna fuck with you until you started fucking with us yeah and uh i don't want to give the whole thing away but then um they remade it with keanu reeves if you uh prefer your movies in color. Okay. As we know,
Starting point is 00:38:08 Corey doesn't. That's right. And Corey is all about the first day the earth stood still. So I think what Corey meant was he likes black and white when the director had the option to not use it. That's correct. I mean, I do like like current films and yeah but i also maintain that like uh uh it's a wonderful life the black and
Starting point is 00:38:32 white version is very superior to the color version i didn't even know there was a color version there is and it's it's cool but but like the way they had to do it it's almost a little uncanny valley and in my opinion uh jimmy stew Jimmy Stewart looks – it's way easier to make him seem younger when he's in black and white. When he's in color, it's like, this guy's supposed to be 19? Right. He's a war veteran. Where does Wizard of Oz fall in? That's probably a difficult one for you.
Starting point is 00:38:59 Yeah, I think color. I think color because the Golden Road is – Don't be ashamed if you didn't like the color parts of Wizard of Oz. Yeah, I think that makes like, you know, the golden brick road is so important. But yeah. It's a big one. The movie's like 10 minutes long. She sings over the rainbow and then cut to she's back at the farm.
Starting point is 00:39:19 But like, yeah, like Ed Wood. It's a crazy dream. Ed Wood and the artist. Like, I just love that they do some newer ones in black and white. I often enjoy it too. It's usually, some take that swing and it doesn't really work out. Like Prince's second movie after Purple Rain was in black and white, Under the Cherry Moon. And that movie was just weird.
Starting point is 00:39:42 Anyway, it's time for round two. Corey's up first. He's got nine points. How many more can he put on the board now? With another movie with day in the title. You've started this whole thing by talking about holidays, President's Day, and blah, blah, blah, which made me think of An Obscure Holiday.
Starting point is 00:40:04 You're going to say my guess. It's one of my favorite movies of all time, and I just happened to re-watch it. I'm going to go with Groundhog Day. I'm so tired. That's an obscure holiday. It happens to us every year. Well, I just mean that people don't celebrate it and there's no groundhog tree, even though
Starting point is 00:40:19 I've lobbied for it so many times. Yeah, it's true. And it came in at number three. All right. Bill Murray. It's tough to have a groundhog tree because you're just getting your Christmas tree down. That's right.
Starting point is 00:40:37 I can't do another tree so soon. I'm still saying happy new year. So Corey's got 17 points now. Mary, get that number one. It's not going to be number one, but another holiday,
Starting point is 00:40:59 which is coming up in one month. Valentine's Day? Didn't they put like a thousand celebrities in that movie they yes they did have a lot of fames in it a lot of famous people a lot of taylor swift's um having a very clumsy uh performance uh because i think the director just liked her so he just let her and her boyfriend be stupid and it's not funny um apologies to any uh swifties out there i i love her in other circumstances um uh what was the title again oh valentine's day i'm sorry i'm sorry i'm just babbling because
Starting point is 00:41:39 it didn't make the list i didn't think that it would. Top 10. It's like 17 or 18. It's definitely there. It's a thing. I'm sorry to say not worth any points today. Dusty, what do you got? Alright. I've been thinking this whole time
Starting point is 00:41:59 and the only other movie I can think of with day in it is Day After Tomorrow. Ooh, that's a good one. That one is a disaster movie. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:16 Where the whole time you're like, well, is there even going to be a Day After Tomorrow? This is so suspenseful. Disaster movie. Yeah, they've sort of backed off of that as a genre, but this particular movie
Starting point is 00:42:32 is still well-liked. Number 10 on the list. You got in there. You got a point. Virtually no chance to overtake our leader, but still mad respect for coming up with any of these you don't want to get shut out yeah exactly uh what do you got for our final round cory let's let's pour some salt in this wound okay by the way nobody ever gets burnt
Starting point is 00:43:04 with salt and salt burn if anybody's not seeing that movie because they're concerned about that it's the name of a castle oh wonderful yeah salt burn yeah they're like let's go stay at salt burn well i think that i've already won no matter what so i don't think i doubt i very much doubt this movie is going to be on the list. But I would like to take this opportunity to shout out a movie that has one of my very good buddies and the best character actor around W. Earl Brown in it. And that is the Kevin Costner vehicle draft day. Good choice. Wait a second. Let me just back up for a second here what what else do we know wl brown from he's dan doherty and deadwood and he also plays the um mentally
Starting point is 00:43:55 handicapped uh brother in there's something about mary uh he's been in black mass he's in he's in the mandalorian he's in uh all sorts of sorts of things. He's wonderful and a very good friend of mine and someone who has helped me out a tremendous amount. That's great. Yeah, I think he's great. He's awesome. All right. And what was he in? Draft Day. Was Day in the title? He's in Draft Day? Yeah, he plays one of the exec execs at the at under kevin costner i believe at the cleveland that the for the football people i don't know how popular that movie is i've seen it a bunch because earl's in it so well here's the thing about draft day is that you know between the goddamn nfl season being like you know five or six months long and uh you know the actual
Starting point is 00:44:42 wait is it basketball or football it's football it's football okay yeah okay so yeah so so yeah so uh i just think that that movie's just kind of becomes strangely perennial for sports nuts right to like you know just go back and keep watching it because it's Number eight. Are you serious? Jeez, look at you, dude. Damn. Also, the Browns. Even when you try to fail, you succeed. He just wanted to shout out his friend. The Browns are having a really good season, too,
Starting point is 00:45:17 with bringing in our fourth quarterback, Joe Flacco. That's true. He got embarrassed yesterday. He did, but I'm saying if there's been hype around the Browns, maybe people are researching that movie. That's true. He got embarrassed yesterday. He did, but I'm saying if there's been hype around the Browns, maybe people are researching that movie. That's true. I bet that's it. I bet that's it. That must be it. The Flacco effect.
Starting point is 00:45:35 Mary, let's get you some more points. I don't know. Okay, I have one more, and then I'm out of day movies. Okay. Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Ooh, good one. Hot pick. I mean, that movie just never seems like it'll ever go away from me.
Starting point is 00:45:55 It's old, though. It's very old. I don't know how much young people like it, but it also just still just keeps getting referenced all the time. Yes. And it came in. That's number one. it but it also just still just keeps getting it's great uh referenced all the time you know um and it came in that's number one number nine oh wow still a good one though i should have made a wager with you cory i should have said okay if ferris bueller's day off is not number one how many of your points are you willing to give up you should have done that well you didn't
Starting point is 00:46:23 number one how many of your points are you willing to give up you should have done that well you didn't well you didn't uh i genuinely can't i can't fathom what number one is gonna be is gonna be like terminator 2 judgment day or some shit it's going to surprise you oh my bad and dusty still has one more shot well that was a great slip of the tongue because I had no movies. So I'm going to go with Terminator Judgment Day.
Starting point is 00:46:57 T2 Judgment Day, as we called it back in the day, is number five and it's worth six points. My highest score yet. You still finished in third, but you still got lots of points on the board. Mary, I'm so sorry for almost screwing you.
Starting point is 00:47:18 But congratulations, Corey. Now, my other guess was going to be independence day two so if that's number one i'll be upset i bet it is um independence day two didn't make uh the cut what the hell is number one these are all great day movies you're gonna be the angriest winner we've ever had when i tell you what number one is but first let me just to give you an idea what we were dealing with with the word day in titles just outside of the top 10 remains of the day night and day sicario day of solidado oh yeah, yeah. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. One Day. Baby's Day Out. Patriot's Day.
Starting point is 00:48:08 Day of the Dead. Daddy Daycare. I was going to say Daddy Daycare, but I thought it was too old. Good Day to Die Hard. Mother's Day. Those are all the ones that didn't make the top ten. Wow. And then there's many more.
Starting point is 00:48:23 Like, day is a very popular word to put into titles. Number seven that nobody said, James Bond in Die Another Day. Good one. Good one. This one's a weird one. Number six, sometimes movies slip in because they're on a streamer and people are curious about it or checking it out for the first time. And so it's a movie called day shift that movie was terrible shift from 2022 with jamie fox i watched that he's like a vampire or something or he's a vampire hunter but he has to hunt them during the day because he's like low on
Starting point is 00:48:58 the totem pole or something isn't that it yeah something like that and it's no good that sounds awesome well it's just weird. It's not as good as it should be with Jamie Foxx being a vampire hunter. I would have thought it would have been a movie about a menial blue-collar job. Yes, me too. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:49:18 But it's the day shift because the night shift was taken by Henry Winkler and Michael Keaton. All right. Independence Day, Groundhog Day, Training Day, obviously. Boom, boom, boom. Those are big, big days. Number one is a horror movie that's coming to theaters this Friday.
Starting point is 00:49:39 Oh, come on. God damn it. It's real. Exactly. It's called Founder's Day. No idea. Yeah. It's called Founders Day. No idea. Well, I am upset. Hashtag not my ad.
Starting point is 00:49:51 This isn't an ad for Founders Day. I know nothing about it other than it comes out this Friday and if any of you had said it, I would have been stunned. That shouldn't even count. It should. I could have just pretended it didn't exist and gave 10 points for training day, nine for ground.
Starting point is 00:50:06 I could have just gone from there. But guess what? Your scores would have – you still – same person would have won. Okay. The trick was coming up with training day and ground dog day, and, of course, that is what Corey did. So he gets to do his plugs first. What would you like to plug, buddy?
Starting point is 00:50:24 Oh, my goodness. I have a new book out. Me and Trey Crowder wrote it. It's called Round Here and Over Yonder. You can get it wherever you get your books. And also I have a sub stack. You can find it at bonuscory.com. I do videos, I do essays, I do podcasts, and also full-length audio dramedies that I produce and do the voices for. BonusCory.com. Thank you, Doug. I'm so happy to have won, finally.
Starting point is 00:50:49 Good job. Yeah, you did it. And I love an audio dramedy. That's wild. Thank you. Yeah, it's been a lot of fun. I got, you know, I had a kid and I've been a stay-at-home dad. I haven't been touring as much, and so I needed to do something,
Starting point is 00:51:03 and I've been getting real weird with it. Okay. I'll have to check it out. And Mary, sorry, Dusty, still going alphabetical by first name. Dusty Slay, you have a new special that's days away. That's right. It's called Working Man coming to Netflix.
Starting point is 00:51:26 A Netflix special coming out on Tuesday, January 16th. It's going to be very good. It is my favorite thing I've ever done and you're going to love it. Well, this episode is perfect timing because this episode
Starting point is 00:51:41 comes out a month from now. All right. No, this will be hot and fresh tonight. So everybody watch Dusty. Even if you don't have the time to sit down and watch it, turn it on. And you can leave the room, but just turn it on on Netflix on Tuesday. Let's get those numbers. But if you have the time.
Starting point is 00:52:02 You're going to want to watch it. I'm much better at comedy than I am movie trivia. Yeah. Everybody, if you thought that Dusty sucked at this game today, check out his comedy Tuesday. And then you'll sit there and go, oh, right. Now I understand. It's so good.
Starting point is 00:52:22 Now I get the magic of Dusty. You're going to be like, dang, this is good. I thought that guy was terrible because he didn't know a lot about movies. I can co-sign. Dusty is extremely funny, and you would do yourself a service by watching this special. We're all going to watch it. It's so exciting. A Netflix special probably doesn't bring up trans people.
Starting point is 00:52:45 I'm just guessing. It doesn't. I don't want to give it away. Dusty's more into trans-ams. Right. Hemis and such. Too much away. No spoilers, but it's a hot special.
Starting point is 00:53:02 Okay. Thank you for being here. I hope you had fun. I had a great time. I appreciate having me. Hey, can I tell you this? Yeah. In 2010, you came to my house when I lived in Charleston, South Carolina,
Starting point is 00:53:17 with a guy named Apples. Do you know Apples? I do remember Apples. He was driving you around at the charleston comedy festival and he brought you to my house and uh it was a pretty weird setup going on over there and uh uh it was fine but we all thought it would be very cool but then a lot of other comics came and it got i think they just talked to you too much and i was like i don't even want to bother this guy i mean yeah all of
Starting point is 00:53:54 that tracks i mean it sounds like you know that possibly happened and i might have been like oh this is too much or whatever but uh a lot of times nothing a lot of times people say, I don't remember being, I don't remember being taken to, you know, a party that I didn't like. So, you know, it's a clean slate as far as that goes. Well, I just, it was nothing weird happened, but I was like, we all thought it would be more fun. But then Apples brought too many other comedians. Oh, Apples. He couldn't just let well enough alone. He had to bring too many other. Oh, apples. He couldn't just let well enough alone. He had to bring too many comedians.
Starting point is 00:54:31 It could happen. Mary Santora. Always a pleasure. Thank you. What's your, what's your current plugs? You can follow me on social media at Mary Santora comedy on TikTok or Instagram. I'm also on Facebook. I just moved to New York City, so I'm not doing a lot of road stuff until
Starting point is 00:54:54 the spring. So I just updated all my my tour dates on Mary Santora dot com. But I'm going to be hanging tight for a couple of months and then hitting the road again late March, early April. So if you're out on the road, MarySantora.com or just check out my socials. And you just got passed at the stand. I did. I just got passed at the stand. I'm waiting to hear back from New York Comedy Club. So I've only been here a week and a half and things are happening pretty fast, which is very exciting. That's awesome.
Starting point is 00:55:28 Here's my plugs tuesday doug loves movies is back at the improv lab at the world famous hollywood improv uh sunday i'll be at san francisco sketch fest sf sketch fest.com for tickets i'm doing stand-up in atlanta at the pearl at the at the the earl excuse me i always call it the pearl that's in vegas the earl in atlanta on january 26th and uh i'll be at the 40 watt in athens at uh 420 on sat, January 27th. But all of my dates are at douglovesmovies.com. Thank you once again to Corey Ryan Forrester, Dusty Slay, and Mary Santora. This is the weirdest coincidence. For every episode, I write down a last line from a motion picture,
Starting point is 00:56:29 usually one that's got reference or some sort of reason for choosing it. And then that's what I say as always. And then that line to close out each episode is a different line from the end of a movie. close out each episode as a different line from the end of a movie. And it's just funny how it turned out that I picked the last line from The Day the Earth Stood Still.
Starting point is 00:56:51 Oh, shut up! I'm sorry, The Day the Earth Stood Steel. Steel. Steel, yeah. So, as always, Gort Veractu!
