Starting point is 00:00:00 Doug hates candy wrappers screening baby sticky seeds with 50 as a pop or kernels in his teeth They're still not one that he won't see Hey, hey, hey everybody, my name is Doug and I love movies This is Doug loves movies recording on Sunday April 13th, 2025 This is Doug Lowe's movies recording on Sunday April 13th, 2025 And I've got three great guests today. So let's get right to it guy Brad. I'm pageant Brewster and Garrett Price. Hello All right Let's meet all y'all individually and alphabetically by first name. He is the director of a film
Starting point is 00:00:52 that I watched on a plane and then by the time the flight was over I had exchanged messages with him and he agreed to be on this show. And his name is Garrett Price. Hello, Garrett. Hey, Doug. And just the way I always wanted my film to be seen on an airplane on that small screen. I appreciate it. No, thank you. It's perfect airplane entertainment.
Starting point is 00:01:15 It truly is. Well, I turned it on because, as I should say, the film was called Yacht Rock, a documentary, and I turned it on because I was immediately intrigued by the... I have such a hard time picking a movie when they have like a hundred movies for you to choose from, and I was immediately intrigued by just that there was a documentary about Yacht Rock, and so I hit play thinking I would just watch a little bit of it get a taste of it And but then I was just captivated the entire time It's very enjoyable movie
Starting point is 00:01:54 It's on max now Yeah, it's a HBO film Yeah, it's Mac on Mac streaming everywhere and I was just joking about the airplane I've had so many people discover the film on a plane this past couple months. It's pretty remarkable. And it's a film that has long legs. People keep rewatching it.
Starting point is 00:02:14 So it was pretty cool. Yeah, I think that like it's got just enough really great music in it that it doesn't, you know, it does have a rewatchability, I think, because, you know, it's just, you know, I was surprised at how sprawling Yacht Rock was, but that at the same time how some people think some bands are Yacht Rock when they are not Yacht Rock, there's like a real interesting delineation there. Yeah, that's the fun part about it, is the debate of what is or isn't Yacht Rock.
Starting point is 00:02:48 And I think, and like, it's a completely arbitrary genre. So it's a lot, you're allowed to kind of, have these kinds of battles about, what you believe and what you don't believe. I set out to kind of make some- Kenny Loggins always is though, right? It's always, Kenny Loggins always is though, right? Yes, for the most part, when he does Yacht Rock,
Starting point is 00:03:06 he does it better than anybody else. But you know, Kenny Loggins is interesting because he started as a folk singer, you know, with Messina and then he kind of transitioned into like the soundtrack king post his Yacht Rock phase. So he adapts very well to whatever is popular, I think, at the time. Yeah, he was very pop rock when he you know he and Messina had that had that hit song your your mama don't dance right you know that was really that I wouldn't call that song
Starting point is 00:03:37 yacht rock I wouldn't even call the theme from top you know the top gun song yacht rock but it's still it is Kenny Loggins Loggins. So I think Guy has a good point. Well, he was interesting because when the Yacht Rock sounds started to fade in the early 80s, kind of the MTV era, when you had to look as well as you sang to get an audience, he transitioned into movie soundtracks and became the king of soundtracks with like had a shack and of course the Top Gun songs and uh, yeah So it was I mean, he's still a decent looking guy with his little you know Spiky hairdo. Yeah. Yeah I mean and they're in very charming man when you meet him a person truthfully
Starting point is 00:04:23 And it's done. I you have a connection to Yacht Rock, right? I mean, well, first of all, I have to tell Nally, you said about meeting Kenny Loggins in person, I met him in an elevator in Seattle. I was at a music festival there called Bumbershoot, and he was performing somewhere in town. And the person he was with was excited to see me and tried to convince Kenny Loggins in the course of an elevator ride that I was somebody Kenny Loggins should give a shit about so we didn't talk about him at all and then we all got off the elevator and you know he was nice but
Starting point is 00:04:58 but yes that's the other reason why I clicked on a movie about Yacht Rock was purely personal because I appear briefly in one of the shorts, the Yacht Rock shorts that I guess today inspire you to look into Yacht Rock further. Was that your entryway into it? Well, I remember watching those Channel 101 shorts back in the day and you know kind of early YouTube days and being obsessed with them. But the way the film kind of fell in my lap was kind of coincidental. I had made a previous documentary with HBO on Woodstock 99, kind of like the infamous failed music festival. And they had been asking if I wanted to pitch another music doc. And I didn't know what story I wanted to tell. Woodstock 99 was a very dark story because it ultimately ended in riots and sexual assaults
Starting point is 00:05:50 and fires. And I was kind of using that festival as kind of a Trojan horse into the late 90s socio-political culture in America. And so I was like, if I'm going to do a music doc, I want one that just celebrates music and something that can make you smile and kind of really lean into the art of making music. I didn't know what that was going to be. And I was working as a film editor on a TV series called Daisy Jones and the Six at the time, so which is kind of a loosely based story on Fleetwood Mac in the 70s.
Starting point is 00:06:21 And so I was living in like this like romanticized time period, late seventies Los Angeles. So I kind of became obsessed with that, you know, that time and that sunset strip kind of culture of Los Angeles as a character into making music. And at the same time I met Christopher Cross as his daughter through a friend at a bar. And she was like, why don't you make a documentary about my
Starting point is 00:06:45 dad? And here's my best friend and roommate, Michael McDonald's daughter. So the dollars of Michael McDonald, our best friends to this day and our roommates and, and they're like, our dads look at the word yacht rock very differently. Chrisford never really loved the word where Michael thought it was hilarious. And that was like, that's interesting. You know, from the artist's point of view of this name that has come to define their life's work 30 years after the fact, how do they feel about it? You know, their music has always been kind of pop culture punchline also. And I, I like this is a kind of story that hasn't been told. I think people automatically go to the Fleetwood Macs and the Eagles and the Crosby sales in Nashville, I think of seventies Los Angeles.
Starting point is 00:07:29 You had this group of musicians making this kind of jazzy or pop music that was still dominating, you know, billboard charts and grams at the time, but their story really hasn't had its place in a documentary. And that was the start of it. And I interviewed Chris and Mike and saw their friendship and saw how excited they were to tell their story And that was the beginning and genesis of of the film and it went from there And then once Kenny Loggins found out Chris and Mike were doing it. He was on board once the total guys found out They were doing it. So everyone can't came along
Starting point is 00:07:58 Except for a steamy damn that took a little more work No, it's got the movie I don't want to I don't like spoiling stuff, but I just want to say it because it's so funny the There is a moment in the movie involving Which Steely Dan guy is it Dan? Dulles-Macon Dulles-Macon is a little a little rude to you and but it's funny that you included in the movie Well, I you know I could talk all day about this movie and this subject So I you know, I hope you have you know, we could set up another day in time for that
Starting point is 00:08:36 But sure now I'm gonna introduce my other two guests today starting with About to go on tour, so we're gonna find out about that. It's guy Branham. Hey guy Hello, good to be here. Thank you for having me. Thank you for doing this and Where are you? Where is this tour taking you? Where are you gonna be headed? I'm going to be in Chicago on May 6th. I'm going to be in St. Paul on May 7th I'm gonna be in San Francisco on May 19th. I'm gonna be in
Starting point is 00:09:11 Seattle on May 21st in Portland on May 22nd so people should come and see me and then I'm coming to Philadelphia DC and the bell house in June Go to my Instagram go go to my website. You can find all of the dates. You can buy tickets. Did I promote good enough, Doug? I think you did a great job. I can't wait to hear all of that again at the end of the show.
Starting point is 00:09:36 Oh, but it's a it's a it's a solo show that I'm getting ready to take to Edinburgh is very funny. But with all of the pain and anguish that we demand from a solo show. So, you know, it's me really thinking I'm better than jokes. What's this show called? It's called Be Fruitful. It is a contemplation of the purpose of my life considering I will not have children or participate in evolution. All right. Um, that's a fun, fun title and a fun reason for that title. Yes. I also tell gross jokes about fruit.
Starting point is 00:10:17 That's the real reason to come. You got gross jokes about fruit. Is it low hanging fruit or regular hanging fruit I Mean, I really try to go for all of the different levels of fruit that is One of the things I've learned is a gay man. You gotta you gotta shoot for all of the fruits I'm just happy with the ones again. Yeah as many fruits in one basket Can I take a moment during my introduction to ask noted chef? get as many fruits in one basket as possible. Can I take a moment during my introduction to ask noted chef Patrick Brewster what her
Starting point is 00:10:51 favorite fruit to work with is? Oh, great question. Well, my favorite fruit is the tomato. Oh, tomatoes are fruit. I'm not crazy about fruit. Really? Tomato, I don't make like a lot of fruit bowls or anything. Grapes I enjoy.
Starting point is 00:11:13 In constantly trying to prepare for a top chef, which is something that Padgett and I both do, I'm always trying to prepare in my head a dessert application for tomatoes, like treating tomatoes as a berry or alternatively using different sweeter berries for something we would traditionally use a tomato for. You're working harder than I am. I don't make desserts though.
Starting point is 00:11:37 I don't like sweet stuff. So now I'm throwing some raisins on a salad. How's that? I mean, I like that I did It sounds like you're both like Is there a Celebrity top chef. Is that is that a regular thing? No, there's only worst celebrity chefs So I were cooks you couldn't get on that because you're not a bad cook. No, no, and I I won't fake it
Starting point is 00:12:02 I won't fake it for ratings It is wild though, the, how complex, how, how complicated the dishes are that they make those worst cooks make. And then also how, how allegedly do pretty well at some of it. Like it's, it's a, it's a weird show. It is. It's odd. It's, it's wild, but right now I'm watching tournaments of champions constantly People keep telling me it's really good. I haven't watched. Oh, you're so lucky. There's five season season six just started. Oh, no
Starting point is 00:12:34 So good Paget and I did not know each other and then we met through Doug loves movies and now we have this rich Food television based friendship that has grown just because of you. Thank you Doug. Well I should introduce Padgett she can be seen in season 18 of criminal minds on Paramount plus streaming on May 8th it's Padgett Brewster. Hi.
Starting point is 00:13:01 Or I like to call you Paget Brewster Plus. Because everyone is putting a plus at the end of everything these days. How are you doing, Paget? I'm great. Thank you for having me, Doug. I'm excited to be here. And guys, show sounds great. And I'm a fan of everything Garrett's done. I should have looked you up.
Starting point is 00:13:24 This is very exciting. Thank you. I'm have looked you up. This is very exciting. Thank you. I'm a fan of yours. Thank you. Thanks. Um, yeah, no, I'm just, I, I, I've shattered my elbow two months ago. So all I'm doing is like physical therapy and pulling on rubber bands and trying to straighten my arms. So that's what I'm up to. Does it still hurt like hell? It does. It hurts like hell doing physical therapy every day. It hurts like hell, but I'm going to heal and I'm going to have complete use of my left arm again. Thank God I didn't break the right one. That I can't imagine breaking
Starting point is 00:13:55 because I'm a righty. If you, yeah, that would be the wrong one for sure. Has anyone here broken their dominant arm? I haven't broken anything. Good, good, good, good. Oh, I am also a never broken a bone. Great. Isn't that weird? Uh, no. It feels inevitable. I mean, I- Now. Well, it's coming. It's coming. Because the ER in Grand Rapids, Michigan was highly surprised that I had never broken a bone before. I don't know if I appear incredibly klutzy Or if it's unusual to reach my age without breaking a bone, but now I've done it. I did it up My god, I Have a question about speaking of like celebrity game shows
Starting point is 00:14:41 Have they ever asked you to do celebrity Jeopardy pageant? No, and they shoot it on the stage right next door to Criminal Minds. So we're all looking into figuring out a way we can do it. Like the cast of Criminal Minds. I didn't realize they shot... They've never asked Joe Mantegna? The great Joe Mantegna's never done it? No, and I can't tell. Is it for a different network. It's not on CBS. That's why It's not like it's all ABC talent on that show they have people from all over the place No, I would love to I
Starting point is 00:15:22 Think you should I don't you know, I don know who you have to talk to you to make it happen But I think it'd be so fun to see you on there. I'm I'm trying I mean, I think I sent I sent an email out. That's that's as hard as I work. Yeah So I'm trying to you'd be a good Hollywood Square also. Oh That sounds easier actually and that's paramount plus that's like they're connected If you make a call on that, if you drop a dime, I bet it'll happen. Thank you very much.
Starting point is 00:15:49 I will look into that. Thank you. I will. Well, before we play some games today, I would like each of you to please recommend one motion picture. We'll start with Garrett. What do you think?
Starting point is 00:16:04 Let's stick in the documentary world, because that's what I'm here on. Here for it. You were seeing Finders Keepers? No, no. Oh, my gosh, guys. What is it? Watch this documentary.
Starting point is 00:16:15 It's about this guy that has his leg amputated through a plane crash, and he stores it in a grill in his garage. And he doesn't pay the rent on the the shed I think the shed he was paying rent on doesn't pay it like a storage worse thing this guy buys the shed it has this guy's leg now and holds it basically hostage like hijinks ensue it's it's funny and sad and hilarious and I highly recommend watching it. Finders Keepers.
Starting point is 00:16:45 How long has it been around? Now you've decided it sounds familiar. I think it came out like 10 years ago. I know the filmmaker I've worked with before, his name is Brian Carberry. It's a great film. I think it premiered at Sundance 10 years ago. If you haven't seen it,
Starting point is 00:17:01 it's irreverent, it's fun, it's a good character study of people in I think West Virginia. Sounds like some real characters. Yeah, it's a fun watch. And I revisited it not too long ago. So that's what immediately came to mind. And then I'll do one more.
Starting point is 00:17:21 As a music doc, Dig, you've ever seen that? I rewatched that also. Oh, Digg? Yeah, I love Digg. Yeah, so, I made him an orc film. So, those are two good docs, I think, to explore. Isn't there like an extended cut now of Digg? Like there's 20 more minutes or something? Yep. Yep. I went and saw a video, it's actually about a couple months ago. And it plays just as well as the first time I saw the film, if not better with the with the footage.
Starting point is 00:17:48 So it's so good. Have you ever seen Dig Guy or Padgett? What is it? It's it's about two bands like touring together, but not getting along. The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Dandy Warhols. Yeah. Oh, wow. And so it's a lot of both of the bands are both, you know, I enjoy both of the bands,
Starting point is 00:18:08 but then also the the conflicts get pretty intense. Yeah. But it's also just it's very stylishly told. What else is the director of Dig? What else is that director done? Oh, gosh, Andy, she's done. Oh, man, I cannot remember the top of my head. There's something else that I saw specifically because I like dig so much yeah I just really think what's the name of the director again on the Timmerner yeah on the terrific I
Starting point is 00:18:39 didn't mean to hijack your recommendation by by also recommending it but let's go to guy what would you like to recommend today I'm now terrified that this is what I recommended last time I was on Doug loves movies because I remember we talked about a real pain but uh-huh did Doug did you see the movie between the temples I Did not okay. Well because it's a Passover. I would like to recommend something extremely Jewish and At the end of last year we had a real pain You know that one Kieran Culkin and Oscar and people were paying attention to and was very Jewish but there was another smaller movie with
Starting point is 00:19:22 Jason Schwartzman and Carol Kane called Between the Temples. And it's basically about, like, a guy who lost his wife and is sort of like, lost direction, and he's a canter, and then an older woman who wants to be a late wife, but mitzvah. It is however, shot like a 19, like an early 70s comedy. Like it feels, it is like making homage to the graduate and goodbye Columbus.
Starting point is 00:19:51 And in ways, guess who's coming to dinner in ways that are really, really fun. And it just visually is not playing a comedy the way that we do it now. And Doug, I think you would be just particularly well suited to understand and appreciate how great it is. And it's also just a really great Carol Kane performance in a way that we so rarely get these days.
Starting point is 00:20:14 Yeah, once you said she was in it, right, it jogged my memory that it was something I was excited for her because she was getting a lot of like awards buzzed, like fizzled out for some reason. But, you know, there was definitely, for her because she was getting a lot of like awards buzzed, like fizzled out for some reason. But you know, there was definitely she got some critics group or something gave her supporting actress and I've always, always loved her. And then also that you're saying it's like a 70s feel like she was in so many of the, you know, big 70s movies. So you also just so rarely hear good joke writing that isn't desperately oversold
Starting point is 00:20:49 And it has a bunch of good jokes that are just like sliding in totally undersold and it was it was a real pleasure All right Paget are you know all of those down? Thank you. I Know I'm very excited. I was gonna say the best thing I've seen lately that this is pandering specifically to Garrett a Yacht Rock was I loved it. I Loved Woodstock 99. So I I think you're a great filmmaker, but I'm gonna choose another movie so that I'm not Over promoting
Starting point is 00:21:23 so that I'm not over promoting. Okay, I mean, I don't mind it, but what else? It's your... I don't either. Yeah, Rock and Woodstock 99 are great, but there's this one weird movie that I want to find out if a Doug has seen that I loved and had never heard of. I think it's 10 years old or it came out in maybe, I think 2015. It's called The Fall. And it it's really stylized. Have you seen it? I haven't, but I've been, I've been trying to get, get to because it's been, it's come up a few times
Starting point is 00:21:53 on this show because it got, you know, what do you call it? When they remaster. It finally got released though. It was like buried for 10 years and it's They cleaned it up and brought it and it's playing in a festival I was that I didn't get a chance to see it. It's beautiful and the direct I don't remember the directors are some sing Thank you. I don't know the name of anyone in the cast Roughly you do name
Starting point is 00:22:21 The stunt guy the stunt guy that's super tall handsome actor who starred in Pushing daisies Okay, he's the man he's the main guy yeah, and then there's a little girl it takes place in the 1920s in in a hospital That's really all you need to know going in okay,. But can I talk about it a little bit? Yeah. So I found out it was that guy, Tarsam, is a commercial director. Yeah. The movie cost 30 million dollars, all his money. He spent four years filming that movie all over the world while he was shooting commercials like car commercials wine commercials whatever all of his commercial work he was flying his cast all over the world to get these scenes that you you think this has to be computer generated because how do you make a movie like this? Yeah. I was so confused. I was like, I know it can't be AI.
Starting point is 00:23:27 This movie's 10 years old. It's so beautiful. I just, I was so excited. I thought about you when I saw it. I didn't text you drinking wine one night. Doug, have you seen the fall? I must have. Have you?
Starting point is 00:23:40 Have you seen the cell? Is that the J.Lo? J.Lo, yeah. I don't know if I have because I did see that he directed that and I was like, oh yeah, I need to watch that next. I think it's got a very similar vibe and it's very highly art directed. I think that's his thing. It looks like he's making movies like, uh, about roughly at the pace
Starting point is 00:24:07 of like one every six or seven years. I like some of it himself. Yeah, I guess so. This is the most I've ever talked about Tarsim. But uh, uh, yeah, that, that movie, the cell made sort of a splash. I remembered that, but I never,, but I missed the fall completely. So this is a great talk. These were some seriously hot wrecks.

Starting point is 00:28:03 We are back and we're going to play some games. And this first one in honor of the Yacht Rock doc currently on Max, I created a game called Yacht or Not. Okay, okay. We will take turns. I I will we'll start with Garrett I'll say a movie you tell me if it's got a yacht in it or if it's no yacht so it's either yacht or not wonderful we got two options that as they say and the yacht rock guys. Yeah Not spelled and a ychg yes Yes
Starting point is 00:29:00 Pronouncing any way you want but just be clear if it's not or if it's yacht and Garrett will be up first. They're basically each one's a 50 50 So Garrett gets the first one and then if he gets he gets a point if he doesn't he doesn't get a point then we move on to guy will do the next one etc and That's all there is to explaining yonder not that the care of yacht or not the James Bond films no time to die Yes. Not only is there a yacht in the film, I can tell you its name. It's called Spirit 46. There we go.
Starting point is 00:29:50 Congratulations, Garrett's on the board. Guy, are you ready? First, I'd just like to say I love that James Bond understands not everything has to be a sexual pun. Sometimes you can just have like a yacht with just a regular name, but yes, let's go ahead. Well, you know, I don't know what the yacht is called in the film. I just know what the actual yacht is called. It's kind of like when the dog is in a movie, they'll list the name of the dog.
Starting point is 00:30:17 These are all the actual names of the boats. I don't know if they, because also I don't even know if they bother to paint over and change it to something sexy because it's a James Bond Over here. They just live with the Existing name. I think some of the yachts in movies are also supposed to be famous yachts for people That know about yachts, but here's yours. Here's yours The second one guys goes to you and it's another James Bond film. Does Skyfall have a yacht or not? I'm going to say, I think isn't Skyfall the one with a home alone?
Starting point is 00:30:54 I'm going to say no yachts. I'm going to say not. Well, you know, as it turns out, the home alone thing is like the last part in the earlier parts of the film are very typical of James Bond locations, so there is in fact a yacht. And it's the yacht in question is called Aria One. All right, for yacht fans out there, I'd like to fill in the details.
Starting point is 00:31:24 Paget, are you ready? I'm ready. The James Bond film Never Say Never again. Does it have a yacht or not? It's so tough because I know you want to say all the yacht names, so I should say yacht, but I feel like that was more of a snowy locale. I'm gonna say not I'm sorry, but it does have a yacht And this particular one the bad guy blow filled it's his it's like
Starting point is 00:32:01 His lair is the shit. I was thinking of a different And it's called this yard is called Kingdom SKR Yachts have terrible names. I'm learning yeah, right Mm-hmm all right. We're back to Garrett and the next movie is Christopher no lands inception Is there a yacht in inception? Uh, yes, there is a yacht in inception. There is. Yes. Yes.
Starting point is 00:32:36 Are you sure you're not thinking of tenant? Oh, there is not a yacht inception. No, I think is there a yacht? Yes. I'm going say yes. I'm gonna stick with it. No, there isn't Guys it's Oppenheimer. That's the one I was thinking This this top is still spinning all right guy This one is not the original classic point break, but the more recent Point break with two actors. I couldn't even tell you their names Does it have a yacht or not? I'm going to say that the ocean is really a major character
Starting point is 00:33:28 in all of the point break franchises. So I'm going to say yacht. Yes, it does have a yacht. You are correct. And the yacht is called ocean emerald. All right, Padgett. Yeah. This is your chance to get on the board. I think this is an easy one
Starting point is 00:33:50 Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler in murder mystery yacht yacht is correct Three-way tie going here, so it's all gonna come down to Garrett's knowledge of... Why would anyone watch a remake of Point Break? I know. That's my question. They tried to make it like, you know, they tried to change up the daring things that they did like, you know, instead of surfing and parachuting, they changed it to like, Oh, what's that thing where they jumped down the side of a mountain? Yeah, it was very casual sports with it. Yeah, I remember. Yeah, they changed it to different Okay Garrett for the win Yacht or not wolf of Wall Street. Oh
Starting point is 00:34:50 Most definitely a yacht. That's a great scene. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Everyone knows that actual yacht called M3 and Congratulations Garrett, it's not This is kind of a warm-up game. It's not, this is kind of a warmup game. It's not that big of a deal. You just won the opportunity to go first in our next game. The one that really matters is to determine our winner today. And we will play that right after this break.
Starting point is 00:35:18 We'll be right back. We are back. Garrett, luxuriating in his win in yacht or not a game. There's dedicated to him in his film So it worked out beautifully With what's that I Have a problem I want to take umbridge with the fact that there was complete erasure of the entire world of yacht based romantic comedies You have overboard you have the overboard remake you have
Starting point is 00:35:51 Way you have the original swept away in Italian and I got none of that Yeah, there's definitely some yachts that didn't make the cut. I was thinking of one of my favorite yachts would be the last of Sheila Yes, is a good movie but also I get confused about what's a yacht what's a boat what's a ship but I'm afraid guy your problem with my game you're gonna have to take it up with boat international because that's where I got it all my info came from Boat International. And Garrett gets to go first in our next game. It's really going to determine our winner today. And it's a game that I call Weird Algorithm. Okay.
Starting point is 00:36:42 In this game Garrett will be going first and Garrett will be followed by Padgett and then by guy and I Will say the name of a movie and the three of you have to guess What actors from that film I'll give you the two lead actors? I'll you know just to kind of shake up your memories but then you have to name either one of those actors or another actor in the cast that you think would be on IMDB's popularity index who you think would be number one would be worth three points who you think would be number one would be worth three points. Who you think would be number two would be worth two points and number three would be worth one point.
Starting point is 00:37:31 We'll mix it up so you don't always have to go. You know, you'll each get to have a chance to go first, second or third because, you know, you can't you can't share answers. You have to just come up with your own and hope for the best. In case I didn't mention it, when you go on any movie, when you go on its page on IMDB, you can look at the cast list and then you can just hit refine cast list and change it to based on the popularity index. So that's the thing you mostly want to be thinking about is like who's who would be popular or being searched a lot on IMDB today. Okay, because I got got all this information today. So Garrett, you're up first, the first movie we're going to do today,
Starting point is 00:38:19 classic Oscar winning comedy called Little Miss Sunshine. Doesn't have a yacht in it, I don't think, but it stars Steve Carell. It's kind of an ensemble cast with Steve Carell and Tony Collette are the two top-billed people. Who do you think from that movie, Garrett, either one of those two or somebody else would be number one on the popularity index today.
Starting point is 00:38:46 I am assuming it's Steve Carell. I'm thinking who else? Paul Dano is thinking it also, but I think Steve Carell probably is number one. Okay. Pat Jett. I'm going to go with Abigail Breslin. Okay. That's not a bad, she's in it. I'm going to go with Abigail Breslin. Okay.
Starting point is 00:39:08 That's not a bad, she's in it. God damn it. I don't want to sound encouraging or discouraging because guy still has to guess. Um, I was going to say Paul Dano. Yeah. Yes. Why do you think people are looking him up today? I don't know. He's younger. I feel like, um, you know, Alan Arkansas's death probably isn't getting as much attention as we would like. Um, you know, I don't think people are.
Starting point is 00:39:39 Are you watching the studio? Yeah, he's in the studio yeah yeah yeah good good yeah he's really good making fun of his own great actorness yep okay so let me break this down for you now that we have all of your answers coming in at number three I suspect because of the aforementioned studio Mr.. Bryan Cranston oh Yeah, he's in Little Miss Sunshine remember his part nope no Cuz you had because Breaking Bad wasn't a thing yet You know ever since Breaking Bad you see break breaking Bryan Cranston and something you go Oh, there's Bryan Cranston, but I guess we weren't saying that around Little Miss Sunshine time
Starting point is 00:40:30 I feel like he's at the end when they arrive where they're going. I Feel like he's at the end of the movie. I feel like that's when he shows up. We were like Oh, there's a dad from Malcolm in the middle Okay, and then a number two There's a dad from Malcolm in the middle. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Okay. And then number two, you nailed it, Paget. Abigail Breslin. Oh, I knew she's in something,
Starting point is 00:40:55 but I don't know what. What is it, Doug? Oh, that she's in right now? Yeah. I don't know. I don't know why people got people talking about her right now, but she must be Showed up in something to get this kind of attention because little Vampire thing or something. I don't know quite a cast on this little miss sunshine So or I maybe she wasn't she didn't she just come out recently and say some actor was shitty to her
Starting point is 00:41:21 Like when she was little Some was that Abigail Breslin? I think she was talking about Mickey Rourke. Oh, damn. OK. That's the article we're both. Mickey Rourke is on like celebrity. Not anymore. Big brother. He's already out.
Starting point is 00:41:38 Yeah, he got kicked off for being inappropriate and menacing. OK, so there you go. That's what he was Managing to Abigail Breslin or no he's saying that Jojo Siwa Right. I think I don't I I don't know if some younger actress who was 20 when he was 60 Shot a movie with him and she said he was physically violent. He was inappropriate She said this fucking guy was like the header of her ex announcement. Yeah. But I don't know if it was it might have been Abigail Breslin.
Starting point is 00:42:13 I think she also came out during the whole Blake Lively thing and wrote like an essay about being treated badly on sets. I'm not mistaken. Oh, probably also done a Jason Baldoni thing. And yes, I came out. I think it's probably also done a Jason Baldoni thing. And I think that's probably what it is. That sounds right. That sounds right. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:31 All right. Well. Her misfortunes put me at number two. Yeah, unfortunately, some people rise up on the popularity index because they died or something bad happened. I know. I'm good at this one that was number one the day she shattered her arm all right did that make the news did anybody the news cover that i mean my google alert said that like you know whatever online things were okay because they loved that i wrote i was on heavy painkillers. Oh, right
Starting point is 00:43:05 Yeah, I just did again because I had a procedure and I was on heavy painkiller I think I talked about farting in a hot tub is Enjoyable and good and going back in time Okay, let's move on let's move on number one you're dying to know everyone's dying to know who's number one Sunshine it is a character actress who I enjoy very much I think she's terrific her name is Beth Grant Really yeah she works with her on the Mindy project amazing she is so great nice lady great actress and she's in this show the bondsman
Starting point is 00:43:49 Yeah, so she must be really good in it because she's like You know popular than anybody else in Little Miss Sunshine Wow so Good for her I say and good for pageants got points. But now it's time for round two. We'll start with you on this one, Padgett. And the movie is the classic Speed starring Keanu Reeves and Sandy Bullock. Okay, go ahead.
Starting point is 00:44:24 I just guess who's number one. Who do you got? Ah Beth Grant You're going Beth Grant. She's in speed Okay Wait a minute. Is this she's not actually number one on IMDB. You want me to is someone more? More looked into than Beth Grant right now if Beth Grant one out of everyone on I'm trying to I'm trying to trying to work the game Doug how do I do this? I you know if you say she's in it.
Starting point is 00:44:55 I mean she's in it. She's in it. She's she's looked like 70 since she was 35 and she's in it. She's the the lady, even though she's probably 38. Right. Who jumped out of the bus. I'm gonna say Beth Grant. She's like over there Wilfred Brimley-ing it. You know, the plain old from Jump. Okay, what do you think?
Starting point is 00:45:20 I'm gonna say Beth Grant. Okay, let's go to Guy. Who do you think would be number one in speed? I'm gonna say Canada Reaps That's a legit guess. What about you Garrett? I'm gonna go I'm gonna go Alan Rock because of succession Right isn't he in speed and well, I'll tell you he was going too fast when he drove through the pizza restaurant Well, I'll tell you, he was going too fast when he drove through the pizza restaurant. The whole right guy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:47 Yeah. Well, I could just picture him because, you know, he still looks like Cameron from Ferris Bueller just grown up. I just picture, you know, just him getting out of the car is frustration. But they fixed it. I drive by there sometimes and they the restaurant got fixed But now there's new like poles that keep you from driving into the restaurant again if he's thinking about doing it again All right, well the bad news for alan rock is that he didn't uh, he didn't make the cut he uh
Starting point is 00:46:21 Um Just to show you that I was you know, trying to do Just to show you that I was, you know, trying to do due diligence. He might have been 6 through 27 or however many actors that are in it. But number five was the great Dennis Hopper, who of course is the bad guy at speed. And then number four, Jeff Daniels, Keanu Reeves' partner. Number three, Sandra Bullock. the Number one is of course it's Beth Grant. I told you I was good at this game. You weren't supposed to know, no one was supposed to know that Beth Grant was also in Speed. But I love Beth Grant and I just saw Speed a few months ago. Yeah, so it's all working out in your favor but we still have one more round to go.
Starting point is 00:47:21 No, let's call it. Let's call it here. Guy gets to go first. Before we go on on can I tell a brief Alan Rock story, please? Right after I moved to Los Angeles I was at the Vaughn's in Los Feliz and I went up to Alan Rock and I asked him if he was Edward Norton And he was very annoyed And were you and you thought he was Edward Norton? I was so certain, like I had just moved to LA, like my senses were not attuned to these things and I recognized him and I was like so certain that it was Ed Norton but it was
Starting point is 00:47:57 Alan Rock. And then later that day I saw a hockey jersey and I was like oh fuck he's Cameron from Ferris to a Bueller's oh that's right Wow I'm curious what Edward Norton would say if you asked a piece Alan Ruck because I feel like the other way around I feel like he'd be more mad yeah I like Alan. Yeah, I've met him twice and he was lovely. Very sweet. Very. Yeah, he seems nice. He seems like like like he might take it as a compliment to be compared to Edward. But the other way around, I don't think would I think that would sting.
Starting point is 00:48:36 But like you said, he did seem irritated with you. So he was irritated. A lot of people are not good at grocery store encounters where the person doesn't know who they are. Oh, my God, that's where I'm my best. It's the wrong name. Yeah. Oh, but who do people mistake you for, Padgett? Oh, oh, no, I used to get I used to get when I had brown hair, I used to get mistaken for the chick on the blacklist who was wearing a wig.
Starting point is 00:49:03 But I don't look anything like basically they think anyone on a cop show is everyone on every cop show. So, was her name Emily Prentice? Yeah. People think I'm on CSI NCIS. You know what I mean? It's that kind of, yeah. Yeah. You're just in that genre. But it doesn't bother me cause I don't blame them. Yeah. You know, people, you know what, you know, your credits are like right there underneath your face when you're like out of Getting them damn groceries alright, so
Starting point is 00:49:36 Great story guy you're gonna go first for the last round Okay, I'm mostly picture that I never saw because I just Wasn't didn't appeal to me and then I heard it was terrible Amsterdam Starring the leads were Christian Bale and Margot Robbie It's called Amsterdam, so what do you think I do you remember that movie I did not see it Who directed it again? What's his name? David O. Russell. I've seen this film, yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:10 David O. Russell. I mean, it was the sort of movie I would like, but I have to assume the legendary Beth Grant. Oh, look at you! What a move being played by Guy. He's saying Beth Grant before anybody else can. What do you think, Garrett? I remember this movie and it's not a strong movie, but there's a lot of people in this film, including someone named Taylor Swift. I remember. Yep.
Starting point is 00:50:40 I'm going to Taylor Swift. That thing she trumps everybody. Yeah, I'm going Taylor Swift. I'm going Taylor Swift. That means she trumps everybody in entertainment everywhere. Yeah, for sure. If you're ever feeling like, if you're ever mad at Taylor Swift for any reason, look up the clip of her in the movie Amsterdam because she gets run over by a car. What? Yeah, and it's startlingly, it's very disturbing. Like it really just looks like she gets pushed in front of a car and runs her over
Starting point is 00:51:10 She's got a nice cute period dress on at the time and I guess her character is saying something irritating or something and She was pushed. Okay So you're going to T Swift So you're going to T Swift Good good gamesmanship because I bet that's right. I'm gonna go with Margot Robbie still riding a high from Barbie. Okay Barber Barbie barber, what is she gonna do next? She's got another like Movie based on some board game or she's doing rock-em-sock-em robot. I swear to God. it's almost that stupid. She's doing like Monopoly, the movie or something. Come on.
Starting point is 00:51:48 I'm not kidding. Wait, with Greta Gerwig or with some ladders, maybe Is it Candyland? No, no, I just made that. No, it's something it's some IP that's just stupid. Like why would she be the go-to? Because Barbie worked, she's just going to be another. I think Monopoly is going to be made.
Starting point is 00:52:14 And I'd heard the Rock'em Sock'em robots for real, the pilot, I mean a script was purchased. Or the IP was purchased. That's wild. So Coming in at number five in the motion picture Amsterdam is the aforementioned Margot Robbie Yeah, sorry about that number four is the the lead of the film if you will Christian Bale and then number three in a supporting role as he often was in
Starting point is 00:52:53 David O Russell movies Robert De Niro Not that spot and then number two see this was a switcheroon II Beth grant See this was a switcheroonie Beth Grant So guy gets two points for that one and then I'm sorry to say Garrett you guys terrific guest But for whatever reason nobody's typing Taylor Swift's name into IMDB today Because she's not even in the like top seven or so names but number one again I never saw this movie but apparently she's in it super popular right now she's got a movie on Prime about a gorge or something Anya Taylor Joy yeah Yeah. Wow. Slipped one over on
Starting point is 00:53:47 you. But congratulations, Padgett. That means you're our winner today. What? I won the whole day? Oh, you guys, I really needed this. I mean it. I needed a win. I'm telling you, your arm is going to heal quicker because of this. Because it really just, you know, you get that adrenaline pumping that positive energy from your successful, successful zoom call.
Starting point is 00:54:16 What would you like to promote? What do you, what's going on? Yes. Thank you for saying it before criminal mind. Season 18 will begin, uh, airing on Paramount plus may eight. I guess you knew that I didn't know that we're starting to shoot season 19, uh, at some point around may as well. Starting point is 00:55:53 You'll be back soon and you can talk about it some more. I'll do it properly next time. This was perfectly proper. Garrett Price, not only, I just want to talk about this briefly not only do you have a yacht rock a documentary on Max and HBO right now you also Are producer on a movie that just played itself by Southwest I did not get to catch it but I'm it's another instantly fascinating subject to me for a
Starting point is 00:56:24 Documentary because it's called A Strange Journey, the story of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Yes. Very excited that people will see this. Wow. It is told through the eyes of Richard O'Brien's son, Richard O'Brien, who created Rocky Horror. And it's kind of a father-son story of his dad creating this monumental piece of art that has given so many people the freedom to be themselves.
Starting point is 00:56:53 And yet Richard himself, it took him 30 years to come out of the closet. So it's a pretty fascinating story of the creation of Rocky Horror and how relevant it is today, more probably so than it ever has been with the themes of Rocky Horror and how relevant it is today, more probably so than it ever has been with the themes of Rocky Horror and in the world we live in today. So I'm really excited.
Starting point is 00:57:11 It's the 50 year anniversary of the Rocky Horror Picture Show this fall. So it's a major anniversary upon us. And this film is still screened in over 200 movie theaters every weekend, midnight shows with shadow casts. It means so much to so many people. It is so, it means so much to so many. It's wild. Like I never got super into going to the screenings, but I've always appreciated that I've done it and that it exists.
Starting point is 00:57:44 Even all the way back to that movie from the 70s fame, there's you know, that sequence where all the nerdy drama school kids have a place to go and they go see Rocky Horror and you know, act it out and whatnot. And we have Tim Curry's in the film who doesn't sit for many interviews these days. So it's really special. He does. That's great. Yeah. We've got Trixie Mattel and Jack Black in it, giving their stories on Rocky Horror and how much it means to them. So a lot of people came together to tell the story. So I'm excited for the world to see it.
Starting point is 00:58:14 Hopefully, this fall. Yeah, I knew this was going to be cool. And like I said, I wanted to see it and I didn't get to. So where is it going to show up? We are figuring that out right now. We have lots of possibilities. So it's pretty exciting. Yeah. I will let you know when it happens.
Starting point is 00:58:30 Come back when it happens. Absolutely. That'd be awesome. I can't wait. I can't wait to see that. All right, Guy Branum, hit us with all that tour info again. Let me first just say how beautiful it is to, like, it's so important to tell the story
Starting point is 00:58:46 of queer art that wasn't a product of people's queerness as so much as a part of the process of them finding their queerness. And there are so many beautiful pieces of queer art that were made by people who were not out at that time, the Adventures of Persimmon Queen of the Desert, and like, have it like, thank you so much for doing something to help ground out and complete this story that isn't easily told on a Wikipedia page, if that makes any sense. Absolutely. Thank you, Guy. That was always the intention of the story and the intention of Richard O'Brien too. He was just making something that you know to express himself and he had no idea what it so many people were seeking something like this to help fill in you know their own lives so thank you. I mean it really is because
Starting point is 00:59:36 it has been so important in the lives of so many queer and trans people I know, that's really awesome. But let me promote my own shows, be fruitful. A show that is kind of about like some of those ideas is coming to Chicago May 6th, St. Paul May 7th, San Francisco May 19th, Seattle May 21st, Portland May 22nd, and then the Bell House June 10th, June 12th in Philadelphia and June 13th in DC.
