This is Doug Loves Movies recording on Friday, July 18th, 2025. And my guests today are two returning champions plus a new challenger. They are James DeMonica, Sam Levine, and Monica Nevy.
Starting point is 00:02:28 Hello. Hey. Hello. And Mrs. Dalfar. Let's meet everyone. Let's meet them all individually and alphabetically by first name. He is the writer slash director, which is especially appropriate to use the
Starting point is 00:02:47 word slash of the Purge films. And he's got a new movie called The Home coming out on July 25th. It's James DeMonaco. Hello, James. Hello, Doug. Thank you for having me, my friend. It's great to have you. I can't, you know, it's always surprising. Thanks for doing it. And tell us about The Home. Sure, so yeah, The Home is a, it's a horror film. It's starring Pete Davidson.
Starting point is 00:03:16 There's no comedy in it. So it's a new thing for Pete. There's literally not an ounce of comedy. He does a very dramatic role. He does a great job. And it's about a young man who, he's given a choice of doing jail time. He's a graffiti artist. He gets caught. He's given a choice to either do jail time or some community service at a local elderly care facility. Very creepy place. He doesn't know that yet, but he chooses to
Starting point is 00:03:38 do the community service. He becomes the janitor at this elderly care facility. He has to live there for a little while. And he starts to notice that very strange Things are afoot at the at the facility. So it's a yeah, it's a psychological horror It's got a big twist and I'm really a bloody ending The last 25 minutes are incredibly bloody and fun and Pete's great. I think people will be really surprised at what a mr. Davidson could do Well, I you know find most Comedic actors, once they've got that down, the move to drama
Starting point is 00:04:08 isn't as large a leap as people say. But it also comes down to the people, the audience, how they react to it. They have to accept him in a dramatic role. And I bet they will. Because he is acting opposite one of the greatest of all time John Glover. Yes, yeah, I love John. I'm so happy you said that. John's amazing film. He's got a huge role.
Starting point is 00:04:30 He's I'd say second to Pete and um John was a blast to work with. I've loved him since 52 pick up so I've been a fan of John's for decades. Oh man, yeah that's I can't go back quite that far as far as just like the role that really stood out for me and made him Somebody I've always enjoyed and looked out for and that of course is Gremlins 2. Yes, Gremlins 2 is fantastic Yeah, John and he's an interesting guy he's a crazy guy he and Pete got along really well So yeah, it's a great supporting cast as other people in there You would know too like Bruce Altman just faces you get to who played the seasoned, you know, elderly people in the film. I don't think they would like me calling them elderly.
Starting point is 00:05:07 So I'll say- Yeah, Bruce Altman, Jack Lemmon's house call in Glen Gary, Glen Rock. That's why I cast him. It's so funny you say that Doug. I cast him, why'd you cast me? I said, because one scene in Glen Gary that made me feel so awkward.
Starting point is 00:05:21 I've never felt so awkward in my life. So yeah, Bruce is wonderful. And yeah, there's a lot of people in there. I've never felt awkward in my life. So yeah, Bruce is wonderful and uh, there's a lot of people in there. I think people will know that Pete, it's kind of a generational battle between the younger generation represented by Pete and what the boomers, the boomers, I guess that's what it's called, that older generation who kind of fucked up our planet and Pete's kind of dealing with them and fighting back against them. So it's kind of fun and really bloody. So if you guys like horror, yeah, check it out.
Starting point is 00:05:52 The Home in theaters on July 25th, which means probably the night of July 24th, you can go see it. So you're right. That's right. Exactly. Yeah. There's some movies like what something that just came out like Jurassic Park, like they just started showing it like at three in the afternoon the day before like the time keeps creeping it's just gonna be movies are just gonna open on on Thursday well thank you for being here dude she took down Jeff Tate in Tacoma it's Monica Neve hi here's the thing Monica I figured if you could beat Jeff Tate, that you should have a crack at the person who is our third guest today. Hello, Sam Levine. Oh, hi. No, it can't be me yet.
Starting point is 00:06:37 No, I got to you too quickly. Too quickly. Monica, how does it feel having been a champion these last few weeks? You know, everything's changed for me, honestly. No, it was really nice. It was unexpected, especially such a competitor as Jeff Tate. So I feel pretty good about it. Actually, I saw him last night and brought it up immediately. Yeah, of course. No, there's not many people who have beat Jeff Tate. Of course, Sam is one of them, but he wins against most of the people we bring on the show and
Starting point is 00:07:11 There was I think there's just an interesting it was also kind of like this movie f1 that Sam recommended a few weeks ago and I saw and I enjoyed quite a bit but like In the trivia in the competition on that show with Sean Jordan in there, like trying to take the lead the whole time just left you this nice opening to slip in there and pass Jeff. It was very, very exciting to witness. Yeah. And and are you feeling up to going up against Sam today? No, but no, of course course I'm ready to have fun, but I wasn't even expecting to
Starting point is 00:07:49 ever win this game. So don't be too intimidated. No, you're very down on yourself the day of, yeah, I wish there was more situations like that in the Olympics where somebody says there's no way I'm going to win and then they win. Yeah, you know, usually everybody has the more positive attitude. way I'm going to win and then they win. Usually everybody has the more positive attitude. Just be negative just in case. A man was always a positive attitude, just brewing under the surface. That can't be my intro.
Starting point is 00:08:14 Sam Levine. Hey Sam. Oh, hi Doug. I was just out on the road and I saw you. Me and my girlfriend saw you. Oh, that's right. Oh my God. I did this show in Holland, Michigan the other night, which is a very interesting place that I visited for the first time.
Starting point is 00:08:31 But the night before, since I was flying into Grand Rapids and then Holland's like 30 minutes away from Grand Rapids, since I was flying into Grand Rapids, we just stayed in Grand Rapids for a night. And my girlfriend had lived there for like a year, a few years back. So she was taking me to all of her favorite bars and stuff. And we went to this one bar that she likes. It has really great hamburgers.
Starting point is 00:08:56 It's called Stella's. And they have like bric-a-brac and random shit on the walls, like a lot of restaurants and bars do. But for some reason, they just had these three circular pictures above the bar, and they were Leonard Nimoy, Bill Murray, and Sam and the two other kids from Freaks and Geeks. Oh, that's awesome. Martin Starr and John Francis Daly and Sam. and the bar has been around for so long that nobody there
Starting point is 00:09:27 Could even answer the question why those five people? Why why is that part of the decor and it was something somebody had to make like there were these just like these circles Like images you'd see if somebody's like on a game show or something with their their favorite You know love boat with their face in the middle of the circle show or something with their their favorite you know love boat with their face in the middle of the circle. Anyway so we saw Sam out on the road and that was that was very exciting and oh and they were playing Adventures of Pete Pete on the tv and we were we were laughing at how ridiculous Toby Huss was on that show so it was really it was fun to uh check in with some of my showbiz pals but
Starting point is 00:10:03 from uh Grand Rapids. Well I can't wait tobiz pals, but from Grand Rapids. Well, I can't wait to the next time I'm in Grand Rapids. I'm going to stop by that bar. I feel like I could get a free drink there. I feel like you will stand there saying that is me and they will look at it and they'll look at you and they'll shrug. No way. And they'll just be like, whatever.
Starting point is 00:10:21 That beer is nine dollars. We don't care. Yeah, but it might even be cheaper than that. We were pretty excited about the prices Okay, good. You know like you can get a can of PBR for like three bucks or something I'm on a plane. Let's go I'm telling you there was a cool place I really liked it and then they did that and there were no other celebrity pictures on the walls anywhere else in the place And it's really big like it's it was really
Starting point is 00:10:45 it really stood out and it even took me a second to figure out it was you because it's kind of a Distorted picture I had to go. Oh, that's Martin star. That's John. That's Sam All right tough without the beard and the adamantium claws. Yeah And I also heard you did quite well in a celebrity poker tournament recently. I don't know who you heard that from, but I did. There was a fun tournament for the V Foundation, which is the ESPN, their charity arm. And yeah, I came in fifth and won some cool wine stuff. So I'm excited.
Starting point is 00:11:24 Sorry you couldn't be there Doug. Next, Doug. Does the missus like wine too? She does. It's, it's we fell in love over wine. Oh my God. It was like the sequel to Sideways. Yep. All right. So Sam, you know what's coming next. I need each of my guests to recommend a movie. you go first, okay
Starting point is 00:11:46 I recently rewatched this movie. It was on cable I was watching the end of the thing that came on before it and then it just this movie just started playing I realized I hadn't seen it in easily 15 or more years. I watched it from start to finish. It's still great the whole nine yards Whoa, you watched the whole nine yards. I did. I did. And I got to tell you, having watched it now, like imagining that script, that is a movie that should not work on paper.
Starting point is 00:12:19 Like you go in and you pitch a movie like that. Oh, no, you hit man. And yeah, people die in the movie. And no, no, there's a lot of death actually. And some of it's really gruesome, but it's a comedy. Like threading that needle, towing that line is so impossibly hard to do, but the tone is perfect for it.
Starting point is 00:12:41 And it really does work. It's a super fun movie. They made a sequel. They did make a sequel, but we don't talk about the sequel. Especially those of us who know Kevin Pollock, because he got saddled with having to do some heavy, heavy prosthetics. Yeah, I was going to heavy lifting but yes like he really you know, which good for him I say but He's been spectacular in a lot of things. I also don't I
Starting point is 00:13:14 Don't think people hated the sequel right? Oh, no, they hate they did. Yeah. Yeah But it wasn't Kevin Pollock's fault. No, no, it was nobody's fault. But it was silly that they had a guy in prosthetics though, right? Am I right about that? I mean, well, he had to play his own character's father from the first movie. Because his character, spoiler alert, his character in the first movie dies. So it was the only way they could get him back. I like how Colin Farrell died in Horrible and then they just left that alone like they didn't try to You know bring him back and put him in prosthetics and we know how much he loves prosthetics boy
Starting point is 00:13:52 Everybody knows how much he does that guy He's a chameleon. He makes love to prosthetics Alright Monica Yes, that was kind of funny for you to say whole nine yards too. Is that what it's called? Is that what it's called or is it called the whole ten yards? It's called the whole ten yards. Ah.
Starting point is 00:14:14 Okay, now I'll change mine. This is funny because I actually rewatched this. I'm a big basketball fan. I played basketball. And he got game I rewatched because I felt like maybe that I don't know if you agree, but there was a short period of time where a lot of athletes were in movies, particularly NBA players. And then they just kind of, that was it's not like they transitioned to being an actor. They just kind of did one in this case, obviously Ray Allen
Starting point is 00:14:46 playing Jesus Shuttlesworth And then you just go he wasn't really great in it, but it Denzel plays his dad. So yeah, it's still a good movie And then like I mean Shaq did a couple that were pretty silly cuz I am And and Jordan, but then they just did one and that was it. They didn't like- Yeah, they didn't OJ it up, like turned it into a whole career where he was a real actor there for a while. Yeah, or like, I feel like John Cena is an actor now, you know, not that-
Starting point is 00:15:20 Very much so. Yeah, but anyways, it's still, I love basketball movies in general and that one's kind of a fun, it's not fun, but you know what I mean? It's a father, son, criminal story, also basketball, you know? I love basketball movie trivia because it's, there's not that many of them. No. As long as you have a general knowledge of basketball movies, I think you could do quite well.
Starting point is 00:15:47 Yeah. Yeah. Somebody else about to say something I stepped on. I was just going to say, Monica, there's a great public enemy song. Is there in there? Oh, yeah. Right. It's a riff off the old what? The Neil Young song, I think, from the 60s. So, yeah, yeah, it's a great, great remake. Yeah, He Got Game.
Starting point is 00:16:06 It was a... Yeah, it's called He Got Game, but it's a great song by Chuck D. Anyway, big Chuck D fan guys. Do you have much, like, you know, popular or existing tracks in the home? No, guys, no, no, nothing new. All kind of old stuff. you know, popular or existing tracks in the home? No, guys, no, no, nothing new, all kind of old stuff. And we had no money, so we couldn't afford anything that really expensive.
Starting point is 00:16:32 So yeah, I would have liked to get something in there, but every time we play, it's some weird thing when we were making the movie. Well, when we were editing, there was a scene at the end where Pete wanted to put a popular song in there, but it kept coming off like an SNL skit. You know, he does all those song parodies. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:46 Yeah, so we couldn't do it and he's very mad at us at first. But he finally realized that it came off too funny. So we had to always avoid that fine line between drama and exploiting Pete's comedic background. So we avoided any new music. So it's a lot of Sinatra and stuff like that in the background or Ripple. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:01 Yeah, that's the thing is you have to find songs that you can. Yeah, fake Sinatra, exactly. Yeah, that's the thing is, did you have to like find songs that you can. Yeah, thanks. Not sure. Exactly. Yeah. So Michael Buble. Yeah. He didn't even report him like people that, you know, there's like crooners from Staten Island or something like that. Oh, Harry Connick Jr. Yeah. Exactly. My way of New Orleans. Yeah. Well, those are a couple of classics we got so far.
Starting point is 00:17:26 What would you like to recommend, James? Can I go old? Is there a time limit? No time period. I mean, it'd be nice if it's something people can find and watch. Great train robbery. I watched something last night, but it's a little obscure. But I'll say it anyway.
Starting point is 00:17:43 It was wonderful. It was my second time watching it. I'm gonna sound like an old asshole. Burt Lancaster's, well, Frank Perry is the director. The Swimmer, have you guys seen The Swimmer? Oh my God, The Swimmer is amazing. Amazing. Gosh, guys. I don't even know this one. Yeah, never seen it. Oh my God, you guys.
Starting point is 00:17:59 All right, so The Swimmer is Burt Lancaster, so it's already pretty cool that it's cool looking Burt Lancaster playing a swimmer. And he, and since you saw it last night, you could probably be a little more specific with the details. But the basic story is that he just hops over fences and swims across people's pools. Yeah. Yeah. It's in like, yeah, that's exactly it.
Starting point is 00:18:23 Like how far is he trying to go or what's he trying to go like, like, I think, not even a mile, but he decides he's going through some kind of midlife crisis, but he's in perfect shape. In the whole movie, he's only in these blue swimming trunks. It's the greatest, like, costume designer's job of all time. Yeah. And, uh, yeah, he's going to go, he starts in one pool and he has this weird revelation. He's like, I'm going to swim home. I'm'm just gonna go from backyard to backyard. And I'm telling you, it's the weirdest movie you'll ever see in your whole life, I swear to God.
Starting point is 00:18:50 It's made in the 60s. It's surreal. They fired the original director about Hethwayne Broad and Sidney Pollock to do reshoots. But in each backyard, he keeps encountering weirder things. Yeah. Like weird shit, and everybody keeps, this is the fun part of it is,
Starting point is 00:19:06 and you guys are funny, I'm not a funny person, but I found it very funny. Everybody keeps talking about their pools in the strangest way as if, I have a pool, I don't think I've ever said anything about my pool to another human being, but they're all so proud of their pools, even though they all look exactly the same.
Starting point is 00:19:19 And they're like, oh my God, look at your pool, it's exquisite, look at the water. So if he comes this weird dissertation on pools, people and capitalism and, and he's in these shorts and then he hits on a 19 year old girl who used to be his babysitter. And then he runs he walks into a yard with all these nude people, these nude old people and it just continuously gets more. Scott everything.
Starting point is 00:19:40 It's got everything. It's a truly fantastic movie and wait, a 19 year old was his babysitter. No, his his daughter's babysitter. Sorry. Thank you. His daughter's grown up and continuously gets more surreal. So I just saw it for the second time. And it's a wonderful film, I should say. That's it's truly. How did you watch it? Just that. Where did I see you guys? I had it on. It's, oh shit, maybe it was a DVD. I had it at home somewhere.
Starting point is 00:20:09 I have VHS too. It could, it's either VHS or DVD. I still have VHS. I'm older than you guys. So I look into if there's anywhere people can see it, but I certainly would enjoy seeing it again. I think it shows up in repertory theaters like the new bed and stuff. of repertory theaters like the new bed and stuff. Yeah, I saw it at the film farm many years ago here in New York. So it's worth seeking out and watching, it's real fun. Well, right on. Those are some great recommendations. Three classics, if you ask me. So we're gonna take a break and play a couple of games.

The first game, you grab a drink, get out of the bathroom The first game we're gonna play today is called
Starting point is 00:23:47 attack of The Tarantino Angela. Oh boy. Yeah in this game And you know, we start off like try to start off like an easier game to for everybody warm up Get their movie trivia brains going in this game I'll name a movie and you tell me if it's got Clinton Tarantino in it, you know, cuz he's acted and stuff Mm-hmm or a tarantula Or both perfect James is up first if he misses Monica gets a shot if she misses then it's like you know give me a point for Sam
Starting point is 00:24:27 But then each time someone gets a point we start with the next person on the next round so James Yes, sir. You're up first, okay Does it have Tarantino tarantula orantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino Tarantino I'm gonna say both. Remember what I said earlier about Sam getting a gimme point? It was prophecy. I could still guess wrong. You could if you weren't paying attention, but go ahead and say it Sam. I'm gonna say that's a tarantula? Yep.
Starting point is 00:25:21 The collector from 2009's got a GD tarantula in it. Wow. Yeah. Maybe worth checking out. the the the Oh I gotta go tarantula Tarantula is correct. There you go. He gets a tarantula released into a situation and he squashes it or he does something to it Try the most six one of the most exciting sequences and Dr. No the most kind of Casual James Bond. I don't think Quentin was alive in, what was that, 1962? Yeah, he would not have been alive, I bet you're right. Okay. So that's one way to figure out the answer to that one. That's how I would have worked. Monica? Yes? I don't know if Tarantulas
Starting point is 00:26:21 existed when this movie was made or if Tarantino was a baby. I don't know any of that I just know the movie is called The Corsollis effect Corsollis effect the Coriolis I said it wrong. I think the Coriolis Effect well, that's really gonna make a difference for me. Thank you for correct. Okay. You're welcome I'm gonna say Tarantula Incorrect Sam
Starting point is 00:26:58 Tarantino Did you know that for sure nope Did you know that for sure? Nope. Yes, that is correct. Did you know after he corrected the title? No. It is. Shot in the dark.
Starting point is 00:27:15 The Coriolis Effect. I had never heard of this from 1994. OK. So, yeah. So Tarantino wasn't even really a renowned filmmaker at that point. I don't think so. Is anybody in it? Well, I mean, 94, he'd already had Reservoir Dogs, but that's it, though, right?
Starting point is 00:27:34 Pulp Fiction would come out in that in 94, but I don't know. I mean, it would premiere to Cannes in May. Yeah. So I don't know what he's doing over here with this Coriolis. Is but is anybody well well known in it? Like, I don't know. So he just over here with this Coriolis is but is anybody well well known in it Like I don't know so he just acts in it because he didn't direct it, right? Yeah, he's just a play somebody in it It has some character name. I should I should have wrote that down But good job Sam. Thanks, dude. We're back to James. Hey Marty Tarantino tarantula are both a movie called curdled
Starting point is 00:28:07 No, he produced that film. Um, I Don't know if he's in it though That would be a wild trick question for me to assume anybody would know he produced curdled He produced I don't think he's in it. I'm gonna say I'd be weird if he produced and wasn't in it and you did I'm gonna say Tarantino. Yeah that's correct. I was really scared. You were gonna talk yourself out of it. Could have been both. You know you really helped yourself out with that knowledge about him being the producer and you know I guess he's like you know he might be one of those things where he has a you know a couple lines or something and that was from 96 so I thought I was a kind of a Tarantino you
Starting point is 00:28:55 know that I'd seen everything a completist both as a director and as an actor but I guess there's some stuff that I missed. Terrentia, Terrentianado? Monica, you can get a point on the board here because you get to go first. Okay. Terrentino, Tar think it's both. I'm sorry, it's not. Oh, my God. I like that guess, though. I like that. It feels like there'd be spiders.
Starting point is 00:29:41 Sam Tarantino. Yes, Tarantino Sam Tarantino. Yes, Tarantino as Tarantino, I believe. I don't know about I don't know what his character is. I know he's like the doomsday guy. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Well, looks like Sam has an insurmountable lead, but let's I actually know, James, if you get this next one, the But it's correct He not only appears in the film but also the band in the film is called Tino and direct show We have a tie Sam
Starting point is 00:30:35 Yeah, then we do that you're keeping score, but I think I've gotten everyone you've thrown at me, right? I Think so and James missed at least one. I did. That was a good point. We started with the collector and he didn't get that. Right. So Sam got the point for collector then for Dr. No. James got the point. I believe. And then for The Coriolis effect. I think Sam ended up snagging that one Then curdled with James Then Sam was little Nicky and then tying it up Oh, I got till dawn. Yeah, so you each have three. Oh, okay Yeah, I guess it's just a matter of I didn't get as many opportunities
Starting point is 00:31:30 He got four at bats I got three But I love Sam the way he pre complains because you're about to win the game. Oh boy It wasn't a complaint I was just curious I couldn't do the math, I wasn't looking for. No, it's true that you didn't get as many as at bats, I guess that's true. But it all comes down to the randomness of what's happening with the two other players, not just one.
Starting point is 00:32:00 And the tiebreaker goes to you, Sam. Oh boy. And it's devised to you know End the game and I see declare a winner but it could be also a fun trick mmm, the movie that you have to tell me if it has Tarantino tarantula of both is Tarantula. Oh, I thought you were gonna say arachnophobia. Exclamation point. Yeah arachnophobia would be good too. Well to my knowledge, Witten does not appear in tarantula
Starting point is 00:32:32 so I will just say tarantula. Yeah that is correct. You are the winner Sam and now James should be complaining. You should. Go ahead James. Doug needs to hear it. It's anarchy with these games. That's games. They're unfair. It's been 18 years of anarchy. What did you win, Sam? I won the right to go first in the meaningful game and that's it. Yeah, it's not even a right. You have to. I know. It could work against me. I don't know why.
Starting point is 00:33:01 You're forced to go first in the next game. I think I would have learned by now. You know, there reason to learn we're out here for that. This is like the Seinfeld of podcasting We're gonna take a break and they're gonna play the the final determining game of who our champion is today After that we'll be right back We are back and it's time to play a game that I call anime shmanime. I found a list of the top 50 animated films of all time according to some random source. I wrote down the top 10 Can't say that I argue with what's in the top 10, but I also know
Starting point is 00:33:53 That there's quite a few animated films that you could argue would be in the top 10 So the three of you are going to take turns guessing movies you think might have made the list. You'll each get three guesses in over three rounds. If your guess is on the list, the higher up it is, the more points you get. How much you get for a number one, Sam? Fifty points. No, it's ten. You knew that.
Starting point is 00:34:22 It's like, I get 50 points. Yeah. And for if you get number 10 on the list, I get 50 points. Yeah. And for if you get number 10 on the list, it's only worth one point. And if you get anything, number 11 through a million, those are all worth no points. Sam? Yep. As we discussed, you get to go first. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:34:42 It could be an advantage if you just pick off the number one Answer, but if you fail to do that, it's just Uh, you know giving the other people You know a little more information Sure Um, so what do you think would be? Oh god, the number one animated Let me ask really quick monica. You've seen a lot of animated movies, right?
Starting point is 00:35:07 I have, yeah. And James, are you an animation buff at all? No. Yeah, same. It is decidedly my my weakest genre. You remember that old movie trivia schmo down? I like studied hard on animated because it was such a crazy cinephile except for animated films. So yeah, it's a way to Doug, you said anime or any animated just like clarify.
Starting point is 00:35:33 I think the expression, you know, anime was to use, but it was it's animated films. Oh, okay. Okay. That was just my fun title because animated shmanimated doesn't sound as fun as animation. And then can I ask is this list based on anything? Do you know what it's based on? Like how popular it was or just if this person. This is like where somebody actually has the nerve to write down and I don't know if it was a committee or one person I don't know how they arrived at it. Okay. Just like these are the top. They use the word top.
Starting point is 00:36:07 So they're not saying at the box office, they're not saying, you know, some sort of vote or any, you know, anything to do with the public. It's not to do with any kind of algorithm. It's just somebody decided that these are the top 10 movies. And of course, anime is animation. So like it would also qualify if you want to think about it that way. All right, Sam, you're all right. I have no frame of reference here.
Starting point is 00:36:36 So I'm just going to go with the one that started it all. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs 1937. Wait, I don't know anything about animation, but I know the exact year it started. Oh, that one's a famous one. Yeah, it's true. It is fairly well known. I would be shocked if you had had any one of these movies, if you said, Oh, I've never heard of that would be quite surprising. But anyway, all that being said, did you see the recent Snow White movie? I did not, because it's not animated. I did Wait, no, that's why you should go because like these these these reboots where they do it live-action
Starting point is 00:37:13 You must feel you know vindicated like oh animations dumb now now I can appreciate it Oh, I didn't say it was dumb. You just don't pay attention to I just it's you know, I don't It it's against reality and I'm I'm very pro reality But if I've already tricked my brain into buying into the world, I don't want to ruin that with the live-action well boy, that's is this no white does ruin a lot of a Lot of memories from the thing but like the one thing that got a lot of criticism, I thought wrongly was it, what's her name?
Starting point is 00:37:47 Ziegler. She's perfectly fired Snow White. I didn't take issue with that at all. There's just a lot of other things going on or not going on as the case may be. I was stunned at how little story there is. But I remember the original animated movie is barely barely like it's like 70 minutes or something and Just not a lot happens and the dwarves are gone for a long period of time. Well, they needed a break
Starting point is 00:38:15 Yeah, after being in the slaves in the mines all day. All right Good fight trying to fight they're finding diamonds in this they're in a mine full of diamonds And then they live in this little tiny shack with their housekeeper, so The whole thing's pretty weird. It sounds like a hard-knock life. Oh Wait, that's a different musical Yeah I'm sorry. Is it on the list? Long story short, it's not on the list. It's not on the list. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:38:46 What a dick. He said so much about it for no. Yeah. What a dick. I just got lost track of it. So excited to talk to you. I love the buildup to that was either going to be, oh my god, it's number one or the dummy is not even on there.
Starting point is 00:39:07 Yeah. Yeah, cool. That's how it could have gone either way. Could have gone either way. It's the nature of suspense. Monica, you're up next. That makes me think maybe newer. Well, everything's newer.
Starting point is 00:39:22 Anyway, I'm going to say Toy Story. So I was going to say, I was. Yeah, I was in there, too. But. Well, I'm glad we all agree because it is number one. Oh, wow. I talked myself right out of it. Number one. Yeah. Well, that's it. That's the tricky part is it's obviously a big one.
Starting point is 00:39:43 And they put it all the way at number one. I would say it's my favorite of all time, but you know, it's pretty good. James, there might be another way to approach it. Like after Toy Story. I mean, do you have a favorite animated movie? Is one broken through? For me, I like Finding Nemo, but I don't think I'm going to say it. OK, but maybe I should now. I was going to say, it's our counted. What was your entry point? What did make what made Finding Nemo
Starting point is 00:40:16 entertaining to you, Albert Brooks voice performance? It was indeed wonderful. He's so good. I like when they kill a big character, they killed the mothers right up front so they had me Alright I'm gonna say Lion King number two on the Job thank you sir nine points Lion King. Number two on the freaking list. Nice job. Thank you sir. Nine points.
Starting point is 00:40:50 That's what freaks me out is when they go, we're making a live action Lion King. And I'm like, well, it's still gonna be animated. Basically. Basically. I think Juggle Book had one live kid in it, you know. But once you were saying we're making a live action Lion King, you're lying to yourselves. Sam?
Starting point is 00:41:15 Yep. You've had some time to chew on this. Yep. You had some mourning over the Toy Story situation. That's okay. I thought you'd come back strong and ready. What's your second guess? The Lion King.
Starting point is 00:41:34 That'd be wild if I like never just that was like a loophole that I never thought about. And then you would say not toys. If you're going to cheat like that, Why would you go for the top points? Well, I mean we had so much discussion about it. I was challenging your short-term memory not your long-term memory I will say Beauty and the Beast That is an amazing guess let's talk about it for a while. No. Nope. Just tell me it's not up there and we'll move on. Well, you know how, uh,
Starting point is 00:42:10 Belle, the character in the movie, likes books. Yep. Uh, movies, not so much. And the movies don't like her either, at least lists of movies, because it did not make the list. I'm very surprised. This is an arbitrariness to it that I could just sit here and lie to Sam and just keep saying no matter what he says.
Starting point is 00:42:34 Oh, no, sorry, that's not the problem is you do this thing where you pick these lists and some of them are like written by Earl from Iowa. Yeah. There's no reason to be less. Well, he likes animated films. Earl. People go on Family Feud. They don't get to go. Did you ask smart people or dumb people?
Starting point is 00:42:53 The game is named popular animated movies and hope that they're on the list. Yeah, I get I get the game. I'm just saying when you do it that way, there's no strategy. So I'm just throwing it in the dark. I think because, you know, you could have said Toy Story instead of Snow White would have been smart strategy As it turns out it would have Sam if you just knew the answers then that would be good strategy Doug if you could just like email me the answers next time
Starting point is 00:43:18 You know like we did in the old days No I swear like it feels like you're so good at this stuff that it you know, it feels like there's some sort of Cheatery afoot, but I assure the listeners that there is not uh, but you know Sam it's I'm always delighted delighted By not only when you lose But when you there's no reason for you to lose Those are every reason those are perfectly good answers
Starting point is 00:43:46 Well, thanks, Doug. I appreciate that What do you got for us next Monica? Just hope that Earl and I like the same movie um I'm gonna go newer Because of what has happened to Sam. I want to say inside out. Oh That is a great one. I Haven't seen inside out too. Did you see inside out too? I did and my son died his hair red because of it It's it's a it's a good one. It's as good as the first one you think no, but it is good It's you know, she's older. so we got some new emotions. Anxiety is there.
Starting point is 00:44:26 OK. Jealousy, things like that. I still love the concept, but the first one is just a little bit better. Yeah, there's a lot of room with that concept of places to go. And does this mean it's not on the list because we're talking about it so much? She could just be on the holder in the next one. No, it didn't make it. It didn't make it.
Starting point is 00:44:43 They had so many movies to choose from that, you know, that's part of it is some really obvious choices. Don't make the cut. Wow. James, what do we have so far? What do we got? We got a toy. So far we got Toy Story was number one, which was also 15 or 20 years ago Monica yeah was number two and everything else has been great cousins that weren't on the list I'm gonna go old though I'm gonna go Bambi that is old. You're right about that. I'm wrong about the answer. Okay. Did not make the top 10. Okay, I apologize. No, it's all good. I like almost every one of these ones that are in the top 10. By the way, I think they're all really, really good. So Sam, what's Really good Sam What's a good one? We haven't mentioned
Starting point is 00:45:46 You know everybody really liked this movie And they said everybody cried and certainly recent and it's controversial Toy Story 3 oh yeah, that's good one. Oh that is a really good one because It when it came out and the reaction to it, it really it was so much better than Toy Story and Toy Story is number one on this list. And yeah, I'm just going to lay my head down on the table here when you tell me it's Toy Story 3 is like so much leaps and bounds, better visually and
Starting point is 00:46:24 storytelling and everything and also emotionally Emotional oh it hits all it has I Couldn't have planned this better Sam yep Toy story 3 is number 13 on the lens. Oh, finally, I got a point or something. No, you got a... You got close. It was three away from a point.
Starting point is 00:46:50 Oh, I thought it was worth 13 points. Oh, this is... this has been a great day for me. And I promise, Sam, I won't... I won't make you answer questions about animation ever again, unless I forget. and get anyone that's on the list, you'll either tie or pass James's score. So this one's huge. I just really have no pattern to follow here. Every time I think I've figured something out, it's not working for me. Other than the first one, obviously.
Starting point is 00:47:39 I have this stay in that nineties range and it was my favorite at the time. So I'm going to go with Aladdin. I could, as soon as you said 90s range, I was like, is she going to say Aladdin cause that movie was huge at that time. And. I was Princess Jasmine like three times for Halloween. You know what? A live action Aladdin makes sense because there's a bunch of people in that movie. There's one tiger. The leads are human beings.
Starting point is 00:48:15 So live action it up and they got what's his name? Guy Ritchie to do it. I thought that movie was all right. But what isn't all right is your answer. Really? Aladdin did not make the cut, unfortunately. Another deserving one. I'm like, what is on this list? Because Aladdin's a good like the story and all the characters are good. And then also Robin Williams fucking around. Yeah, they're like
Starting point is 00:48:46 Came together in so Such a great way because it because they were coming off of the success of little mermaids So like you need to ramp it, you know, it can't just be a good story. That's something else something else special about it. Okay This is exciting though because Now James your one point behind monica the Thank you, Mike. Only if I can also ask a question, of course, let me let me go first. I'm gonna go first Do you worry that you give the maybe gave the good current administration a great idea with the purge movies? God damn you worry about it every day. Believe me. Oh my god. Yeah, you know, he did, about five months ago, I don't know if you guys remember this,
Starting point is 00:49:46 he did mention starting a purge. Yeah, I know. I think that idea got to him and he is not against it. And I got a call, yeah, from a lot of people. The Times wanted me and one of the producers, Jason Blum, to write an op-ed piece. And then we got a slew of calls from PR people saying, publishers saying, you don't want to poke the beast,
Starting point is 00:50:08 don't write anything about it. So we didn't write, we were gonna write this big thing about what it really means and whatnot. But yeah, so I might've given him a terrible idea, which is. He moved off of that and just mentions Hannibal Lecter in every speech. Yeah, exactly, exactly. Fortunately, Hannibal Lecter hasn't written an op-ed to
Starting point is 00:50:28 to get him more riled up. All right. So what's your final guess, Jane? Oh, what's your question? My question is, can it be a combo of live action and animation? Oh, let me let me look through the list. No. Oh, very helpful. Thank you. It's pure pure animation I'm gonna try did anyone say little mermaid I just did in conversation I just did like that that
Starting point is 00:50:57 was funny if I gave up the answer I did not hear you say that I was talking about you know it was a it was a big hit right before Aladdin oh damn it I didn't mermaid was gateway to Aladdin like that was a that was like brought on a new era of you know success it's your fault because animated movies had gone into a black hole if you will but what was your the the change it the the the
Starting point is 00:51:33 the the Yeah, do we get to know because I'm like yeah Leave you I'd never leave you hanging on that. We've got we got plenty of time This list is on an app called circle ranks perfect Anyway, they're the ones that came up with and they named the top 50 and there's some really interesting Choices in there, but the the list really popped out for me for a specific reason that we'll get into in a second But before I reveal that information Monica you get to do your plugs early
Starting point is 00:52:19 Because you won. So what would you like to promote? I would love to promote my social media just at Monica Nevy and Monica Nevy comedy com I got As you guys know from when I won last time my wife just shattered her elbow So we are still recovering from her surgery until September. I will start touring All over the place again, so yeah, just follow me at Monica Nevy. And you got a GoFundMe situation too? We do have a GoFundMe for it. Yeah, it's quite an expensive surgery and she has to take work off. How can people find it?
Starting point is 00:52:56 It's on my Instagram. All right, perfect. If Toy Story is your favorite movie, reach out and donate. Or if you agree that Inside Out is a great film and should be in the top 10. Yeah And that inside out too is a worthy follow-up. Yeah Okay. Thank you Monica Let's start at number 10 Everybody loves it. They've made several more kung fu Panda 50 of all time for sure. Mm-hmm. Oh my god number nine interesting the Lego Batman Movie it's just yeah, I don't know if it's the top 10 I think that movie is underrated. It's a good movie.
Starting point is 00:53:47 I don't know if it's the top 10. Well, tell me how you feel about number 8, The Incredibles. I almost said that one actually. Yeah, that's one of my favorites. That is a good one. I like that one a lot. Number 7, that's why I had to say yes, anime would potentially be a part of this because Miyazaki's Spirited Away is number seven.
Starting point is 00:54:13 And then, also I mentioned most of these, not like O'Batman, but most of them I think were nominated or won Oscar for animated film in their year. Number six, also one of my favorites, Monsters, Inc. Billy Crystal and John Goodman and Steve Buscemi all bring like real acting to a silly monster story. Number five is another one that's like hard to argue with its popularity and its quality Shrek Oh I wasn't even thinking dreamworks. Oh, right. Well, that's probably for good reason I'd still I think that's the only Dreamworks that made it on this Number four is our boy Pat and Oswald rat tattoo II Which lots of people love very much and number three is the one that for me
Starting point is 00:55:07 I've never gotten into these movies. It's you know they've made three of them and also one called planes It's cars cars was number three. I Just never I mean I like one Wilson and Paul Newman, but That tow truck can go fuck itself What's that you didn't say up did you I thought about that one I know Another one that's like it's shocking. It did make the top 11. I mean 10 because it's number 11. Oh Yeah, but it was close according to circle ranks.
Starting point is 00:55:47 So anybody disagree? Go complain to them. It's not my list. All right. Circle jerks. Yeah. James DeMonaco, the home is in theaters where people are going to movies again. I feel like these last few summer releases have really just done the world and Superman. I think that was just boom, boom, boom. Movies, people, and they're all movies that coincidentally people want to see in IMAX. So that's also a lesson we're probably learning right now is movies need to be a bigger event to get people to get, you know, out of their home environment and go see it on the big screen. Anything else
Starting point is 00:56:44 you want to say James? No, thank you dog. Yeah. Thank you for having me on and guys go see the home We're up against Fantastic Four so support a little right? That's where it's gonna end right? For us to be the first flop of the search, right? That's right. Go see the home is gonna scoot in there. Exactly. Exactly We're much smaller film. So yeah, check us out support support us, and yeah, thank you for having me on, man. Yeah, I'm excited to see it. You're an excellent publicist who arranged for this,
Starting point is 00:57:15 offered for me to be able to just watch it on a computer or something, but I really am a big screen devotee. If I want to see something if I want to see something, I want to see it in the theater. I mean, yeah, yeah. And it's a fun one in the theater, I think, especially the last 25 minutes, we really, we spent all the money there.
Starting point is 00:57:33 So it was really fun. All right. So people who like to show up late, you know, Yeah, you'll be okay. The last 25 minutes. People who want to miss the trailers. Cause now it's official that AMC theaters across the country are just saying, yeah,
Starting point is 00:57:50 it's going to be half an hour before the movie starts after the start time. So now you really got to like, you know, you got every show time, you just got to add a half hour and then maybe deduct a couple of minutes just in case, oh, maybe they showed one less trailer for some reason because it didn't arrive or whatever. Trailers don't even arrive anymore, right?
Starting point is 00:58:10 They're all just done. They do it digitally, so it's kind of hard to screw it up. So they have to slam on a lot of trailers. And then they also slip in now a commercial at the last possible second before, so the people that do try to arrive later at least gonna see We'll gotta see that commercial You'll see a car ad
Starting point is 00:58:32 Okay Sam Levine yeah another great run on the show you that was your Eighth appearance in over over nine weeks. Oh, wow. Doesn't feel like it. Both of those numbers are right, because we don't. Numbers are never right. And yeah, that's the new way is to always just say numbers that aren't don't reflect what's going on. Right.
Starting point is 00:58:59 But you are on the show a lot and you have won a lot. And what would you like to promote today? I'm in the car commercial that airs right before James's movie. In the theater. Well that's a great two-fer to see you in the commercial and see the home. Yep. If you're here in the Los Angeles area on Tuesday, July 22nd, a film I'm in called Asteria is playing at the Yard Theater here in LA. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:59:28 So check that out. And of course, I'm on Cameo and all the socials. Same with 2M's, you know. Yeah, dude. I'm going to be doing this show, Douglas Movies, this Wednesday night at Comic Con or you know the night before Comic Con in San Diego at the American Comedy Company at I say eight o'clock and then I'm sure that the time will be there when you go to get your ticket and then there's gonna be a live scream
Starting point is 00:59:59 stream God, I got that, you know AMC does those AMC screen unseen and then they do scream unseen. And so now I can't even say the word stream anymore. But I'm live streaming from dynasty typewriter in Los Angeles on Saturday, July 26 at three o'clock Pacific time. You can get your tickets for in person or the live stream at dynastytypewriter.com and all of my dates and deeds and links are at douglowsmovies.com. And I don't know if you know this about the show James, but thank you once again to James DeMonaco, Monica Nevy and Sam Levine. But at the end of every episode, I say a quote that is the last line of a movie, generally
Starting point is 01:00:49 a known movie for the most part. And that's how I close it out. I say, as always, and then it's the last line for a movie and the theme song pops in. But I just want to let everybody know ahead of time that this is the earth-shattering and clever final line of arachnophobia. As always, let's do it. Now it's time for Doug to watch another talkie. Eyes of gold is viewing prowess makes it cocky.
Starting point is 01:01:21 There's no room in his heart for you cause Doug loves movies.
