Starting point is 00:00:00 Doug hates candy wrappers screaming maybe sticky seeds with 50 acid pop or kernels in his teeth. They're still not one that he won't see because Doug. Hey, hey, hey, everybody. My name is Doug and I love movies. This is Doug loves movies recording on Wednesday, Jan 14, 2026. We're doing it. We're a couple weeks in now. My guests today are all participating over the next few weeks in the annual Bay Area of California Comedy Festival called SF Sketch Fest.
Starting point is 00:00:44 They are Jeremy Elder Michael Hitchcock and Johnny Taylor Jr. Hello. Hello. Hello. Hello. Let's meet them individually and alphabetically by first name. he I don't make sure I'm doing this right yeah he's a two-time champ returning to defend his title
Starting point is 00:01:06 is Jeremy hey Jeremy hey how's it go I thought your pause after he was if you knew my pronouns I'm like you got it it's all good he slash also he yeah he he he no him well you know all of us are comedic in one way or another so he he he is a funny
Starting point is 00:01:25 funny way my pronouns are he he he he he Yeah. Ha, ha, ho ho. What are you doing at SF SketchFest? And when are you doing it? SF SketchFest. I am there with my sketch group on January 31st.
Starting point is 00:01:44 The sketch group is called Business Casual, and we are doing a live episode of our podcast, the Business Casual Show. We have Joe Firestone as our guest. And it's a very, you know, bit forward, active podcast, a lot of visual guests. a lot of visual gags, which is great for podcasting, and we're doing it live. It's going to be great. I'm also there with Stamp Town,
Starting point is 00:02:03 the variety show hosted by Zach Zucker, and those are a couple dates throughout the fest as well. Oh, that's cool. I love those. Yeah. And you'll like have, are you going to set up some sort of video camera so you can,
Starting point is 00:02:17 so you'll have clips to put on the internet like you do when you do business casual and studio? Oh, yeah. We'll be filming the podcast up there, so we'll have every, episode has a video stream on YouTube and Spotify and those sweet, sweet clips as well. Oh, right. You do film the entire thing every time. So this will be available for people who can't make it to the festival. This will be available to watch the whole thing on your YouTube.
Starting point is 00:02:44 Yeah, exactly. Cool. That's very cool. I'm doing Douglas movies at Sketchfest, and if I see any cameras, I'm going to smack them out of their hands because I am committed to keeping this audio-only podcast because that is a real stubborn way to behave. He is a frequent guest on this show, and that's all I'm going to say. No, he's a stand-up comedian Johnny and Taylor Jr. Hey, Johnny. Oh, Doug. Thanks for that intro. Appreciate it. Yeah. The wife fumbled that.
Starting point is 00:03:19 I've been a champion on this show. You have. You're just not a current champion. You're just a return champion. You're just a return guess because of your because you're just a champion in general i'm a champ uh it's good to be here dog thanks for having me tell me about your uh sketch fest shows i want to be uh at cobs comedy club january 22nd with carman christopher from the bear so uh love cobs so i'm stoked yeah that's a great club i'm going to be uh there for uh this saturday night i'm participating in the Josh Gondelman, Allison Leiby podcast called, sup, bro.
Starting point is 00:04:00 Very, very ironic title, I'm assuming, because they're a white man and a white lady. But that being said, Cobbs is a fantastic club that I'm always excited to go to. Thank you, Johnny, for being here. No problem. And he co-stars on Nobody Wants This and The Lowdown, two ongoing excellent series. It's Michael Hitchcock.
Starting point is 00:04:35 Hey, Michael. Good to see you, Doug. Although, yeah, not really seeing you, but, you know, how it is. We saw you on your camera. You're looking great. You know, and thank you for turning the camera off. What's your sketch fist itinerary? I'm going to be there on the 24th.
Starting point is 00:04:55 I'm going to be doing improvisation with theme park improv and Anagastair, John Michael Higgins, Jessica Maginson, Cole Stratton, Jenner Barney, Gary Anthony Williams, and our monologist is Nord Dunn. So that'll be fun. That's going to be at the Great Star Theater on the 24th. And also on the 24th, I'm doing Smoke Show,
Starting point is 00:05:18 which is a fun show that I'm going to be doing with, with Jody Sweeten. So that should be fun. Oh, that's like Jody Sweeten's regular, is that her regular thing? Yeah, I've never done it before, so I'm excited to do it. Well, I mean, you know, she is a smoke show. I'll be at Sketchfest, like I said, this weekend,
Starting point is 00:05:41 and I'm appearing in five shows, including the one I just mentioned and Douglas movies taping on Saturday afternoon. I just want to tell everybody that I'm sorry that it just worked out this way that, you know, the playoffs are happening in the NFL and the San Francisco 49ers will be playing on Saturday afternoon. So I hope all the football fans already got tickets before they found that out. But the kickoff is at 5 o'clock. You'd miss part of the first quarter at most if you want to do a Douglas movies. Niners game
Starting point is 00:06:21 combo. But before we play our little games today on this show, I would like each one of you to give a recommendation of a movie you think people should see, would enjoy, etc. Jeremy,
Starting point is 00:06:37 this is your third appearance in pretty much as many weeks. So are you running out of things to recommend or do you have something for us today? I said the two movies I've seen, so I'm definitely running low. Yeah. No, this movie probably people have seen it,
Starting point is 00:06:54 but I encourage people to watch it again, and it is Hot Rod. I re-watch this, and I'm putting this in probably my top three favorite comedies. I think it is a great structured movie. The laughs are 10 out 10 and just a great cast. I really was surprised at how much it holds up, and I really enjoyed that one. So if you've seen it, see it again.
Starting point is 00:07:16 If you haven't seen it, it's Hot Rod with Andy Stamberg and Bill Hader and that whole crew. yeah if sandberg is like the like the driving force behind you know sometimes he acts in things and i'm like okay whatever you know he's in that movie the roses and i was like oh good for you you're in it's a big movie but but the ones that like come from him and his his circle uh i really i always enjoy them very much uh the can't never stop stop stopping i never get that title right and um you nailed it And Palm Springs, like, I just, I just love Andy Sandberg-centric motion picture. And Hot Rod is also a great one.
Starting point is 00:08:00 Yeah, shocking about a heart. He really pulls it off. Yeah. You know, it's been a minute since I've seen it, but I'll take your word on the hard part. Johnny, what would you like to recommend today? Well, I always end up recommending horror flicks on this show, and I'm going to again. I actually just watched Companion with Jack Quaid and it's from the team that brought you the barbarian. Uh-huh.
Starting point is 00:08:30 And kind of blew my mind with how, kind of just how eccentric and funny and twisty it was. But, I mean, that's how Barbarian was. Went to a place she didn't think it was going to go. and this one kind of much the same. And it has enough gore in it to keep the horror fans happy. But I actually thought it was a kind of a lovely flick,
Starting point is 00:08:53 if I'm being honest. I dug it. Yeah, it was, I saw it so early. I saw it at the end of 2024, like in November or December. And then it came out in January of 25. And it has been,
Starting point is 00:09:11 over this last year, a consistent, recommended movie on this show. People have brought it up a bunch of times. And we were also fortunate enough to have the director of the movie on the show. And then I ran into him and said, people keep mentioning your movie on my show.
Starting point is 00:09:28 And he's like, thanks. I wish the marketing had been better. But, you know, a horror movie in January, like it's a little bit of just a, I hate the expression, no-brainer, but it's just like how Primate is doing pretty well right now. it's just, you know, there's just not a lot of big movies coming out in January to compete with, and horror is just always, you know, you have to make a pretty bad horror movie to not have
Starting point is 00:09:54 that, at least that opening weekend bump just from being something that all the youngans want to watch. And, but Companion is like, it's even popping out upon some top 10 lists. Like, it is really, really, really solid and really good acting. And, uh, That guy, Rupert friend, he plays like a Russian dude in it. And he's really good and really scary, creepy. And he was in two other movies last year that, like, it was like three different guys. He's so good and so different every time he shows up. Great recommendation, though, always.
Starting point is 00:10:35 Michael? Yes, sir. Well, I'm going through, I'm going through the, you know, the movies that are nominated right now. And I'm enjoying most of them. I think it's a great crop of movies. I was really, really like Marty Supreme. And I'm not a huge Timothy Chalemay fan, and he kind of won me over. So, you know, I thought he was amazing.
Starting point is 00:10:57 But the movie that's kind of off that list is Babyface, which is 1933 Barbara Stanwick, where it's the sexual escapades of her character. She literally sleeps her way to the top. And it's pre-Hase Code movie. so it's very racy for 1933. And one of the coolest things about it is her best friend is a black woman. And that's it. That's what's so great about it.
Starting point is 00:11:23 It's like the black woman is not a stereotype. It's weird that it took like 60 years for that to not be the case again. It's a great film. It's a great film. And you can see it on HBO Max, I think, right now. Really? Yeah. I saw somebody complaining recently about how, you know, Netflix for a time was like, sort of their motto was like, we're going to just have all the move.
Starting point is 00:11:54 You know, we're going to have as many of the movies as we can. And now I heard someone say recently that like the oldest movie on Netflix currently is from like the 50s. Wow. And that they're, and at that there's very few movies from that time period. And then, like, you know, like it just, I don't know about the 60s and 70s, but then obviously there's a ton of shit from the 80s, 90s and, you know, et cetera. But that's really interesting to me that HBO Max has a movie that old. Yeah, and to see something before the Hays Code, like, censored everything. Like, it was, it's really good.
Starting point is 00:12:35 And she's, she's fantastic in it. And she, you know, she could do no wrong. you can do everything. Yeah, she's a terrific actress. In the early days of this show, I close out the episodes by just saying Barbara Stanwyck is a shithead because the joke being that that's the last thing
Starting point is 00:12:57 anybody would ever call Barbara Stanley. It's what out of pocket, like ridiculous thing to say about Barbara Stanley. And then it shifted because, you know, even 20 years ago the audience for this show was like, who? And so then I switched
Starting point is 00:13:15 it to Willem Defoe as his shithead because, you know, everybody loves Willem Defoe and wouldn't say that about him. But then eventually it changed into another thing where I just had audience members suggest people to call
Starting point is 00:13:31 a shithead. And you'll hear one at the end of this episode because starting this January I went back to calling somebody a shithead at the end because that's just where I'm at is there's a lot of people
Starting point is 00:13:44 that need to be called out right now. But thank you for all of these recommendations. Somebody can find all of those if you have several of the streaming services. I'm sure you could find all those movies. And thank you for
Starting point is 00:14:02 saying an old movie that is available, Michael, because a lot of times people just launch right into talking all about a movie that no one will ever see again. We have to take a break, but when we come back, the games will begin. Talk soon. Hey, we're back. And our first game today is the one with the silliest name. It's called ABCD's Nuts.
Starting point is 00:14:32 Yeah. And this is the actor edition, which I will explain. It's a spelling game, sort of. Since we're all going there in the next few weeks, the San Francisco Sketchfest, I decided the word we're going to spell today is Sketchfest. And by spell, this is what I mean. Jeremy will be up first.
Starting point is 00:15:00 and the first letter in sketch fist is an S. So Jeremy will have to name any actor or actress who has the last name, a last name that begins with S, which should be super easy. Shouldn't really be tough to do. And the trick is if he matches the name that I've already got right here in front of me, then he will just automatically win the whole game. But out of all the actors and actresses in the world,
Starting point is 00:15:34 why would he begin with the letter S, why would he get it in one guest? That would be pretty impressive. I'm going to do it. It could happen. It really could happen. But that being said, as we go along, the next letter would be K,
Starting point is 00:15:50 and then that would go to Johnny, and then the letter E to Michael, and then back to Jeremy for the letter T. till we get all the way through Sketchfest. And as we go along, a theme should emerge. You should start to get an idea of what all these actors and actresses have in common and might make it easier for you to guess and to match me. You ready, Jeremy?
Starting point is 00:16:16 I'm ready. Let's do it. Okay. What's your first actor whose last name begins with the letter S? Oh, it's the last name? Yes. great great let's go let's go I had a first name and I was what to really embarrass myself oh shit what was that
Starting point is 00:16:34 I was gonna do Sandra Bullock but that would have been a real whiff at the beginning uh no I can do it I can do a last name okay let's let's do a keeper Sutherland now is he on your mind because of his recent incident did he have a read I know is this just a crazy thing I said wow this is so exciting this is so exciting on Monday late Monday night so like after the Golden Globe I don't know if he went to a watch party or I don't know what Kiefer was up to.
Starting point is 00:17:01 I don't know his whole itinerary. But I do know that at like 12.03 a.m., police were called to an Uber that he was in at Fairfax and Sunset in L.A., and he was arrested for threatening the driver. No way. I swear I had no idea. That is crazy. Yeah. threatening physical harm on the driver was what the charge was.
Starting point is 00:17:29 Wow. And my girlfriend and I have pieced it together that he's drunk, he's in an Uber, he changes mind about where he wants to get dropped off. Because the quote is, supposedly he said to the driver, if you don't let me out of his car now, I'm going to kill you. It's amazing. And he said it probably had a very serious Jack Bauer voice or, you know, lost boy vampire voice.
Starting point is 00:17:52 And he, so that's, I think, I think what happened is. that he just decided he wanted to get out for whatever reason. You should just be able to get, you know, pull over, let me out. And the driver just wouldn't let him out for some reason. And so I'm leaning towards that Kiefer was just, you know, and also that's an expression. It's probably his intent wasn't to probably actually murder the man. He probably just said, let me out or I'll kill you because he was just frustrated.
Starting point is 00:18:18 And didn't he also supposedly put hands on him or something? It was, you know, allegedly, or what I've heard is that he's not charged. with anything physical. It was just threatening. But, you know, I also wouldn't put it past, I mean, you've seen Keith O'Sullo and, you know, tackle Christmas trees when he gets drunk around the holidays.
Starting point is 00:18:37 Like, he's, you know, and this story would be even funnier if it turned out that he was just absolutely sober when this happened, but I think it's, I think it's a safe assumption that he was, that he was drunk. So that was a great first guess, Jeremy. All right. Love it.
Starting point is 00:18:54 But I went with, Mr. Ben Stiller. Okay. Ooh, Ben Stiller, okay. Yeah, so what's this second name going to be? It's the letter K. And Johnny, it's your guess. All right.
Starting point is 00:19:07 I'm trying to really align our auras here so I can get this. I'm going to go with Nicole Kidman. You know, always a great guess because we can't go to the movies anymore without having to see her and have her remind us that we love movies. they fortunately they've got a shorter one like it gets to it quicker now like there's less buildup to her just saying we make movies better eventually it's going to be like two seconds it just keeps getting shorter she's just going to step in the puddle that'll be it yeah splash we make movies better yeah i love those commercials so much i always applaud when i see him
Starting point is 00:19:50 yeah i think there's like at least in the early days of it, I think there was a real, people would get really fired up for it. Like, they'd really like scream when she came on and made that announcement. But also the other problem is, though, it's after two or three other ads for AMC, and you're like in an AMC when it's happening. So it's just like, what, why do you need to remind us so much? We just chose this theater because, you know, it's in my, you know, it's close.
Starting point is 00:20:18 I went not with Nicole Kidman, but with a friend of this show and a friend of comedy in general, Mr. David Kekner. Ooh. Ketner and Ben Stiller. Yeah, so that gives you, that must give Michael a little bit to think about for. It sure does. I have to do E? E name, yeah. Well, clearly it's Clint Eastwood.
Starting point is 00:20:48 I mean, the three of them, you know, some people call them the three amigos. Yeah. But I went with Chris Elliott, the great Chris Elliott. Chris Elliott. Chris Elliott, Keckner. And Stiller. Jeremy, you're up. Seeing the theme yet.
Starting point is 00:21:10 Just give me Tremel Tillman. I'll see you, Tremel Tillman, and raise you a. a Keenan Thompson Interesting I'll say Johnny The letter is C Letter is C
Starting point is 00:21:31 Letter is C Now I'm really thinking about the connection All men Unfortunately I didn't really think that through Nicholas Cage What do you think he has to do with those other guys No fucking idea, Dad. I love it.
Starting point is 00:21:56 I just It's the only one I could think of. Well, this is a lady. Okay. And she goes by the name, Joan Kuzak. Is this? Michael. I have one Bill Hater for H.
Starting point is 00:22:16 Okay. Is that your final answer? Yeah. Yeah. Is it some sort of, can I kind of guess sort of what the, or we're not allowed to say. Well, you don't want to, you know, what the theme is. Okay, all right. All right.
Starting point is 00:22:31 Yes. All right. Then I won't. It feels like you're on to something. But I didn't write Bill Hater. I wrote down Anthony Michael Hall. Mm-hmm. So then we're back to Jeremy for the F in Sketchfest.
Starting point is 00:22:50 Yeah. I'm really drawn. None of these pieces are coming together. Give me Jody Foster. I want to say something about Jody Foster, so thank you for bringing her up. No problem. She's got a movie coming out tomorrow
Starting point is 00:23:07 called, I think it's called A Private Life. And Jody Foster is fluent in French. It's a French movie. I cannot wait to see an entire movie where the Jody Foster we know and love and the voice we're familiar with just speaks in French the entire time. Wow.
Starting point is 00:23:31 Yeah. I mean, there was, you know, a little bit of Oscar talk for her early on, but I mean, the movie's not even out until tomorrow. So, like, movies that come out in January, but they, like, try to get the Oscar, you know, they show it to Oscar voters at the end of the previous year,
Starting point is 00:23:50 or they put it out in theaters for like a week or something in two cities. I think that strategy is not going to work anymore, you know, because you got movies like One Battle in Sinners that have just been big talked about movies for, you know, the whole, you know, sinners came out like early for an Oscar contender. And then one battle, we've been talking about that since, like, September. So Jody Foster's in. correct and the uh answer is will forte one of the nicest people in the biz i wouldn't say that that's the theme but uh a very very sweet guy e is the next letter for johnny okay duck so i think i know
Starting point is 00:24:44 where the theme's going uh-huh am i going to say the right name i don't know right But I'm going to go with Chris Elliott. Now, you know I said Chris Elliott earlier. Oh, did you say Chris Elliott? Yeah. Oh, no. Now I'm really fucked. Because now I got to...
Starting point is 00:25:07 But that's, I have to accept that as your guess. God damn it. But also, it's extra funny because what I did write down is Abby Elliott. it. I'm certain I'm correct about the same. Back to you, Michael, with S. I think you got this. I think you can do it.
Starting point is 00:25:35 Well, I might be wrong now. But David Spade? Oh, who's his best friend? I wrote down to Adam Sandler. I'll see, I was going to, okay. I mean, Adam Sandler has a lot of best friends. It's not necessarily a two-way street, but he's got a lot of people that like him the most. But great job, though, because it's clear you understand the theme.
Starting point is 00:26:09 I think or the theme adjacent, but I think I... Yeah, but then we go back to Jeremy for this is the final opportunity to take this home. Now the theme is quite clear now. I'm just now struggling to find a T. Yeah. Well, the only thing I can say is, you know, you know me, and I pull some shit. This is true. Oh, gosh, who?
Starting point is 00:26:45 So what's your guess? Oh, no, I've been thinking first names again. Let's do, I'm drawing blank on any names here. fit what this category is. You might just have to hell marry it. I'm like 90% sure you're not going to say the right name. All right, fine, then give me... Well, not you think of just another name in general.
Starting point is 00:27:19 Give me... Just to be... Just to make it clear that I at least know the theme in any regard. I'll just even go off letter and just give me... Give me Andy Sandberg. I'm just going to go full off. Just to prove to the audience, I at least him in the ballpark of what's going on here.
Starting point is 00:27:42 Yeah, it was fun that we were already talking about Andy Sandberg, and because of what the theme is, he could have been either of the S's. But as it turns out, sometimes I'll just write down the same name again, which could have worked maybe for the Chris Elliott gas, but in this case, it's Kenan Thompson again. Oh my God. Because there is a startling
Starting point is 00:28:07 startling few people who have been a cast member on SNL and their last name begins with the letter T. I can't even I think there's like one other and it's not somebody prominent. I wanted to try to stick with people that are
Starting point is 00:28:22 prominent but also all these people, the other thing the theme has in common, except for Kenan and maybe Will Forte and Adam Sandler, they're all people that might not even be remembered for having been a cast member on SNL, you know, because they were there for a short time or during a terrible time or both. But congratulations to all three of you for being equally not the winner of this particular game.
Starting point is 00:28:59 But there's always, I always have a, you know, contingency plan for when that sort of thing happens. So in the next game, normally the winner would go first, but instead we're going to have the person who went third in this game go first. And then we'll flip the order. So it'll go Michael, then Johnny, then Jeremy. And I'll tell you all about the game we're going to play right after these words. we are back and since nobody matched in ABCD's nuts or called it a draw and Michael you're up first in a game that I'm calling
Starting point is 00:29:41 let's get sketchy yes the theme is continuing we're we're plugging the hell out of sketch fest and the fact that we're all going to be there over the three different weekends that the festival goes for. And this game is similar in format to other games we've played on the show. I've written down, according to Rotten Tomatoes, the 10 best-reviewed movies that sprang from SNL sketches. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:30:22 Yeah. And we just keep talking? I mean, we just go around like... No, you'll take turns. I'll walk you through it. Okay. But of course, we did talk about hot rod earlier, and it is not, even though it stars Andy Sandberg, it is not based on a sketch. And here's the most alarming thing.
Starting point is 00:30:42 I want to play a side game really quick. Jeremy, closest without going over wins the side game. How many movies do you think? think Rotten Tomatoes lists overall. The game is going to be based on the top 10. But how many movies are officially, according to Rotten Tomatoes, SNL sketch movies? Without going too deep into remembering them, I'm going to say 16.
Starting point is 00:31:14 Okay, what do you think, Johnny? I'm going to go of 13. Michael? Yeah, I would say, yeah, I don't think it's much more than that. We have 16, 13. I'm going to do the old prices right and say 12. That is the correct answer. Oh, damn.
Starting point is 00:31:34 Michael. I'm sorry. I guess if it's a price is right, you have to go even lower maybe. $1. Anyway. Yeah, or yeah. Interesting. But, you know, I was playing Price's right rules.
Starting point is 00:31:45 You didn't want to go over, so you did the right thing. But, okay, so it's going to start with Michael will name a movie that he, think landed in the top 10 out of 12. The higher it is up on the list, the more points you get. If it's number one, you get 10 points, number 10, you get one point. And then there's all those points in between. And then after Michael has made one guess, and we've determined whether, how many points he gets for that, then Johnny will make a guess, then Jeremy, and all three of you will get three guesses total. Then we'll add up the scores and hopefully declare a winner. and Michael, start us off.
Starting point is 00:32:25 What do you think is the number one best-reviewed? Best-reviewed? Okay, maybe not the most popular? No, this is entirely based on the Rotten Tomatoes scale, and since nobody's made a guess yet, I can give you all this clue at the same time. I don't know if clues is the right word for it, but the number one movie on this list got a 93% on Rod-Tom.
Starting point is 00:32:51 which is a great rotten tomato score, but it's not, you know, it's not in the upper 90s or 100. And then it goes all the way down to the number 10 movie got 12% on rotten tomatoes. So they haven't gotten that much respect as a genre from the critics. So from the aggregation of reviews. Well, I'm going to say if it was a critical hit. Mip Gruber I mean I already mentioned
Starting point is 00:33:27 Will Forte and my love of him The late great Val Kilmer Is terrific in it as Mr. Kuntz Is Mr. the right name He did he have a military ranking I think he was Sergeant Kove Something like that
Starting point is 00:33:44 It's number five on the list Oh wow Okay I'm really off Yeah, that's worth six points for Michael right out of the gate. And the critics, yeah, I feel like it was better reviewed than a lot of S&L movies, but it's still only got 47%. And I think that's probably just because of the, it's a pretty silly movie. And maybe the critics just couldn't get on board with that. I saw it in South by Southwest.
Starting point is 00:34:14 And the place went absolutely insane for it. The Paramount Theater was just people screaming laughing the entire time. And I saw Will Ferrell after it. Will Ferrell. I saw Will Forte after it. And I was like, that was great. South by Crowd loved that movie. And I then kept to myself that, you know, there's been a lot of movies that they love
Starting point is 00:34:38 that don't go on to be box office successes. I think McGruber has become a lot of a cult thing. You know, I don't think it made money or got good. reviews but i know it didn't make any money but i thought maybe it got reviewed better all right yeah interesting all right johnny what's your first guess uh so i mean not a lot of real critical darlings no out of uh out of uh i'm gonna go with wayne's world that does seem like a uh extremely logical a little bit better than it was certainly uh pretty well received
Starting point is 00:35:18 because it is number two on the list. Oh, right. Number two. I'll take it. I'll take it. That's nine points for Johnny, and that one got 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. So basically, well, let's let Jeremy have one guess
Starting point is 00:35:33 before I keep blathering about the overall structure of the list. Let's see. That was mine. Let's just, you know what? I agree. There's not a lot of real critical darlings. how did Night at the Rocksbury do? I'm guessing not good.
Starting point is 00:35:52 I'm going to guess pretty low, but... Well, Jeremy, you've been a champion for, you know, a couple of episodes now, and part of it is because of how good you are at this particular style of game. My strategy is get the number one out the gate, and I have decided to go right away from that strategy for this guess. this time you used to in previous episodes you've gotten the one two and three like you've been nailing all of the top answers and uh in this particular case you came out of the gate with number 11 uh honestly i'm more proud to have gotten the two that didn't make it
Starting point is 00:36:32 yeah we'll see if you can uh with your future guesses if you can accomplish that but now we go back to michael who needs to put a few more points on all right then i'm going to go with the daddy of them all and do blues brothers. I mean, that is the one out of all of them that feels less like a stretched out sketch and more like, you know, its own movie that happens to have
Starting point is 00:36:59 these guys who weren't even really in sketches on the show. They always just came out. Yeah, they just danced. They just danced and performed it was, and it was kind of funny and Lauren Michaels hated it. And it is number three on the list. So congratulations,
Starting point is 00:37:14 Michael on that one. That's worth eight points. And that's one of my like all time favorite movies. I just I love that movie because you know, it's a musical and has like just great great songs sung by great
Starting point is 00:37:30 performers throughout the film. Any movie's got Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles is like, what is happening? These two white guys, they really got hooked up. All right. So Michael has 14 points now, Johnny. So you really need to get number one, four, or six to stay in this.
Starting point is 00:37:54 Yeah, I'm having a hard time thinking of anything that aren't the really worst ones. So. I should say that's what I wanted to say earlier is that, you know, Blues Brothers just is barely, you know, is over. It's certified fresh, but it's just at 71%. Because I'm sure, especially at the time it came out, I'm sure some critics were like, yeah, okay, we get it. The car is crashing into each other because it's really over the top in the chasing and crashing department. They bought a lot of old squad cars and just fucked them up.
Starting point is 00:38:36 Yeah, this might be low, and it's kind of cheesy because I ever said Wainswell, but I'm going to say Wainswold 2. I mean, that's how the game is played. I was shocked. I was shocked that Jeremy didn't grab that low-hanging fruit. Because while not as, you know, not as good, according to the critics, as Wayne's World won. I don't know if the jury's out on what the public thinks overall. I remember being disappointed by Wayne's World, too.
Starting point is 00:39:08 It is number four. Oh, yeah. Oh, wow. Wayne's worth keeping me in the game. Johnny takes the lead by two points. But we'll see if Michael can put a few more on the board. Or if Jeremy, let me just crunch the numbers here a second. 16.
Starting point is 00:39:28 Jeremy could do this. It's still not out of reach. I have a different goal in mind. I'm really going to try to nail this number 12 and see if I can be the first person to get both wrong ones. It feels like a good goal. and I'm going to go in and let's go for cone heads. You're saying cone heads would be the number 12,
Starting point is 00:39:53 the worst reviewed of all of the S&L sketch movies. I haven't seen the cone heads movie, to be fair, but I would be curious what they've done with it. I'm going to lock in cone heads. That was the funny thing about a cone heads movie, is that the cone heads, whenever they did the sketch,
Starting point is 00:40:14 part of the joke was that pretty much the exact same things happened every time. So they really only had like six minutes of material to stretch into an entire movie. So they have to, you know, make it a lot about the kid that's trying to date the Connads daughter, you know, like Chris Farley's trying to date Lorraine Newman, I think. But anyway, enough of me trying to recall what happened in Conheads. It's number seven on the list. That was the worst outcome. I was hoping secretly it was a Trojan horse number one or 12,
Starting point is 00:40:50 but seven is leaving me no joy. Yeah, you got to, in your third pick, you got to really, really go for it and try to get that number 12. But Michael, you have a serious chance of winning this thing. Okay, well, I'm going to go with America and the world's love of Molly Shannon and say superstar. Yeah, she's terrific. Again, hard to stretch out her sniffing her fingers and then falling down into an entire movie.
Starting point is 00:41:22 But it's got its charms for sure. And it is number eight on the list. So that's three more points for you, Michael. So you are technically in the lead now with 17 points. But if Johnny can name the number one, six, nine, or if he's number 10, we're going to end up with a tie for first place that we'll have to figure out a way to settle. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Johnny, what's your third and final guess?
Starting point is 00:41:54 Okay, so I can only remember two other ones. So, and I think one of them is very bad. And I think they both suck, honestly. Which one sucks the least? I'm going to go, this is probably the last one. I'm going to go with Blues Brothers 2000. Again, you know, very smart play going with a sequel that, you know, obviously would not rank nearly as high as the original,
Starting point is 00:42:25 but still could potentially be on the list. It's last, isn't it? Blues Brothers 2000, which came out in 2002, I think. I don't think the 2000 was in reference of the year. It's number six on the list. Oh, my God. So Johnny, you did it. Your score is insurmountable at this point.
Starting point is 00:42:50 But we do have the excitement of letting Jeremy try to get the number 12 movie. What is funny if you stumbled into number one. Could you imagine? Well, the sad thing is I have, for the life, we cannot think of another movie. Like, all the sequels are gone. Superstar is gone. I really got nothing. I'm going to lock in Shweddy Balls, the movie.
Starting point is 00:43:17 Underrated, underrated, really. Underrated, really deserved its flowers. Surprising about a heart, too. I get suckered into watching, like, every year, S&L just put a special together where it's just all the Christmas sketches, you know, the great, great Christmas sketches. And I get suckered into watching it every year. But at this point, I step out of the room during Shready Balls because I've seen it so many times. but they never got around to making a Shweddy Balls movie.
Starting point is 00:43:48 Did you by any chance see Anagastair and Rachel Dratch's Hallmark Christmas, a parody called A Cluster Funk Christmas. It was on Comedy Central, and it's really funny, and it's great. And they wrote it, and they star in it. It's Rachel and who? And Anagastair. Oh, okay. Speaking of Shwetty Balls.
Starting point is 00:44:08 Right, yeah. Yeah. But I thought you were suggesting they really kind of made it. sweaty balls movie but no they didn't know this yeah this had nothing to do with s and l but it's really funny yeah okay what's it called again uh a cluster funk christmas okay because about you know it's the perfect time of year to be looking for christmas movies to watch yes it is it's perfect time i saw a movie that like i wish i had seen in december but i just i didn't get uh any kind memo that it was a kind of a not like a full-blown Christmas movie but has a kind of a light
Starting point is 00:44:46 Christmas like there's a Christmas thing going on during it but it was the directed by Jay Duplas and it's called the Baltimoreans I love that movie right yeah it's it stars my friend Michael Strassner who also co-wrote it with Jay and it's so good and smart Funny. It hits all the buttons. It's so good. Yeah, probably one of maybe two movies ever that do a good job of capturing the world of, you know, an improv group. Yeah. Or being an improviser. Yeah, you should interview him sometime, Doug, because he, Michael or Jay, but it's kind of based on a real thing that happened to Michael. And it's based on kind of a real life experience.
Starting point is 00:45:33 It feels very real. And Liz Larsen is great. I had already seen her on stage. She's a great actress, and she's great in it. And it's just, you know, kind of, I think it would be a great double bill any time between like Thanksgiving and Christmas with the holdovers. Yeah, that's great. You know what I mean? Yeah. Two movies, small cast, funny, but also touching and also kind of reminder of how hard the holidays can be.
Starting point is 00:46:03 Yeah. For some people. Yeah. film. Yeah. So what's our number one SNL sketch movie? Yeah, I cannot think of What did Shweddy Balls the movie make the list or is that a Oh no, I officially said that one is not a thing. Fair. And therefore not worth any points. So Jeremy, your run
Starting point is 00:46:24 as champion has concluded. But you know, you're of course always welcome back along with your cohorts in business casual. But let's Do all of our plugs and then I'll tell the remaining answers because that will keep people listening and they'll sit through our plugs. Johnny, Johnny Taylor, what would you like to promote? Well, as we've been talking about, I'll be at Sketchfest. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:51 January 22nd at Cobbs with Carmen Christopher from the Bear. Also, I'll be at Rooster T. Feathers Comedy Club, March 5th through 8th with my friend Laura Bates. And I'm excited to be a sketch. And maybe I'll come down this weekend and see you, Doug. Oh, cool. Yeah, well, you know you're, you reached out to me and you're definitely, if anybody on the panel of my show cancels, you're going to be who I call. But I hope they don't because it's a great lineup.
Starting point is 00:47:22 It's a great lineup. It's three people who have been on the show before and they're a lot of fun, Paget Brewster, Jesse Hett, and Josh Condoleman. and then the fourth is somebody I've never met and it has never been on Douglas movies. I'm very excited about it. Sabrina Wu is the awesome guest. She's amazing.
Starting point is 00:47:44 Yeah, she's so cool. So are my am I using their own pronoun? Oh, I believe they're great. Yeah. They're amazing. They're great. Okay. Thank you. So, Jeremy, what would you like to promote? Sketch Trust as well.
Starting point is 00:48:03 can go before, but then outside of that, me and my sketch group business casual are taping our show Cowboys. It is a full Western farce that we're putting together. We have a few shows leading up to it. We have January
Starting point is 00:48:19 23rd in Las Vegas and we have February 2nd in San Diego at Soda Bar. And then if you want to come to the taping itself, that's on February 7th at the Elysian Theater in LA. Now, what do you have to How did you describe it before?
Starting point is 00:48:35 Did you say it was like Blazing Saddles meets Inception? Yes. If that's what gets you to go, let's go with that. I said Blazing Saddles in a Monty Python field. Oh, okay, yes. I remembered it wrong. Except is one of my other favorite comedies next to all the Monty Python film. Of course, yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:56 Easy mix up. But yeah, it's very in that type of slapstick style. So if you like those things and like, Doug quoted last time, without the racism of Blazing Saddles and without the Britishness of Monty Python. And that's kind of where we lie, right? In that sweet spot. I have loved Monty Python, like the TV show since, like when I was a kid, they would show it on PBS. And I'm sure I like the silly walks and the dead parrot and the, you know, just the overall goofiness of it. But now when I watch it, like when they do like a parody of a game show, the answers are all like, you know,
Starting point is 00:49:33 Their football, our soccer, but they're all like teams that, like, as a kid, I would have no idea what they're talking about. But I still always love them and it seemingly got their sense of humor. What is it my turn? Michael, no, Michael, what do you want to? It's always your turn, Doug. It's your show. Oh, right. Well, definitely go to Sketch Fest and if, you know, I'm doing theme park, which I love doing.
Starting point is 00:50:01 but if any of you have never been to Sketch Fest and you live anywhere near San Francisco man you've got to check it out there's so many good things there's something for everybody and then I really want people to if you haven't watched the lowdown yet with Ethan Hawk
Starting point is 00:50:17 you've got to watch it it's now streaming on Hulu all the first season it's a great show it's getting fantastic reviews it's created by Sterland Harjo who also did Reservation Dogs which is another one of those shows if you'd never watch, do you need to watch it?
Starting point is 00:50:34 So please check that out. And obviously nobody wants this on Netflix. Yeah, and Babyface on HBO Max. Yes. I'm not in that one. Michael Hitchcock, bring in the assignments. Yeah. Bringing your viewing schedule.
Starting point is 00:50:50 I am going to throw in another thing about Ethan Hawke, and that's how hard my fingers are crossed for him to get the best actor nomination for Blue Moon. Oh, he was so good in that. It's crazy how good he is. You don't even recognize him. It's just a whole different character. Yeah, he's a character actor now.
Starting point is 00:51:14 Yeah, amazing. And a great guy, like one of the nicest people you'd ever meet. Very cool. One more time, Sketchfest, we're all going to be there, but I'm going to be there this weekend. Friday night, I'm in a show called Sketchfest Threesome, which is three stand-ups, myself, Lane Moore and Dean Del Rey, and then Doug Loves Movies Saturday afternoon,
Starting point is 00:51:38 and I'm in three other things, so just find me at Sketchfest. And the Benson movie interruption is back at Dynasty Typewriter in Los Angeles on February 3rd, and I'm doing stand-up at the Tacoma Comedy Club, the newer one. There's two Tacoma Comedy Clubs. They're owned by the same people. They're not competing necessarily, but there's a newer one in Tacoma. and I'll be at that one doing stand-up on February 6th and 7th, Douglasmovies.com for all my dates and deets and links and stuff.
Starting point is 00:52:12 Number 12, the precious what Jeremy was trying to find. Let's hear it. It's Pat the movie. It's Pat. I forgot about that one. Yeah. Wow. Which has a devastating 0%.
Starting point is 00:52:30 on Rotten Tomatoes. And I don't remember it being, I thought it had some laughs. I didn't think it was a zero percenter, but nonetheless, that's where it is. Number 11 was the Knight of Roxbury, which also, I think that movie would have been a hit if they called it something where people got a better idea
Starting point is 00:52:51 of what it was they were going to see. That's just such a random title, and it only got 11% on the Rotten Tomatoes. number 10 dude I love very much another nice guy in this business the Tim Meadows comedy the ladies man
Starting point is 00:53:13 the ladies man that's right this next movie was so poorly received that the lead actor decided to go into politics Stewart saves his family which again also directed by the late great Harold Ramos
Starting point is 00:53:33 and has I think it has some funny parts I think most of these movies have funny parts you just need to like turn it on and like you know like Netflix likes to say don't make the viewing it your priority like have it just have it on and glance at it from time to time but now
Starting point is 00:53:53 right that's what Netflix Yeah, that's what it's all about. They come out of said, like if people, you know, want to watch something where they don't have to pay attention and where the characters will explain what's happening over and over again, then we're going to give it to them. That's why it's such a delight that nobody wants this. It doesn't do that.
Starting point is 00:54:13 And, you know, you really do have to pay attention, but it's rewarding because it's, the jokes are funny. And Michael is hilarious on it. I'm going to talk about it like you're not here now. Oh, thank you. number one on the list that nobody would have ever said
Starting point is 00:54:31 because I barely remember that something happened on SNL that led to this movie and one or two of you may not even have ever even heard of this movie but it's called Bob Roberts what is this
Starting point is 00:54:47 Tom Robbins right Tim Robbins 93% on Rotten Tomatoes because it's a a mockumentary about a politician who's also like a folk singer and I guess Tim Robbins sang as that character on an episode of S&L and that and then later they made a movie out of that character and Jack Black is in it and lots of other recognizable actors so if you're looking for yet another thing to check out if if Bob Roberts is playing any
Starting point is 00:55:25 anywhere that you can access it, it is the best reviewed S&L sketch movie. Wow. That's a deep cut. Yeah. I have no idea that had anything to do with SNL. Yeah, right. Congratulations, Johnny. You are our winner today, and we will have you back at yours and ours earliest convenience.
Starting point is 00:55:49 And thank you once again to Jeremy Elder and Michael Hitchcock. As always, you know who is a shithead.
