of the Indie film American Comic, currently playing the festival circuit. It's Joe Quazzala. Hey, Joe. Hey, Doug. Thanks for having me. I mentioned that you're all three returning champs, right?

Mm-hmm. Uh-huh. Okay, good. Noted. And Joe was on the wide world of Doug's this He's in this month's episode as well. the the premiere in LA went great and The next stop is in Williamsport, Pennsylvania for the River Valley Film Festival on July 19th I think anything after that isn't until maybe hasn't even been announced but that is definitely the next thing. I'm sorry that your triumph went unheard Johnny, you know, I kind of backed my way into that one anyway So it's probably better that people can't see that. I basically was just the best of the worst on that one That's all it takes sometimes. There's a man who was an accident who could tell you the there's a lot of truth in that and his name is Sam Levine. Oh, hi, Doug.

I am happy to be the best of the worst on any day. Okay. Well, you often are and the last time you were on the show, you recommended 28 years later. Yeah. And I've heard kind of hound you like, do you stand by that recommendation? The reason I brought it up is because I wanted to know if you have seen or have interest in seeing 40 acres. I have not seen 40 acres. It's not a zombie movie. But it's as close to a zombie movie as a movie can get without being a zombie movie because it is post-apocalyptic.

But instead of walkers, it's marauders who dabble in cannibalism. Oh, so it's like the road Yes, it's very or What was the Denzel Washington one book of the book of Eli? But probably I feel maybe more entertaining than both of those but it's up to the individual viewer to decide on that But I just wanted to bring it up an excellent actress named Daniel deadwiler is the Lead in 40 acres and she's very good Okay, but now

Before we play some games. Yes, check it out Sam. But before we play some games today I would like each of you to recommend one movie. We'll start with you, Joe. What do you think? The last time you were on, I think you mentioned Small. Secret Mall Apartment. Secret Mall Apartment. Yes, close.

You knew there's some adjectives in there. There's a call it Small Hidden Space. Yes, that film that is unclear how exactly you would watch it right now, but keep your eyes and ears open. Yeah, give us one people can actually check out. For sure. You know, a movie that I had never seen, but I and it had kind of a mixed reputation at the time.

I think it has grown in esteem since then and I watched it and I enjoyed it was The Beach. Danny Boyle. esteem since then and I watched it and I enjoyed it was the beach. Hmm. Danny Boyle. He's so gross. Danny Boyle. Yes, Danny Boyle. And yes, it was, you know, considered a flop cause he like, you know, uh, really

burst on the scene so hard with the train spotting. Um, and it was a, it was one of the first, I think, post-Titanic Leo movies, and he was trying to do something a little bit more out there, you know, not a romantic lead kind of thing. And so I think, yeah, a lot of people were just kind of confused at what that is, but it's a really enjoyable watch. You know, it's got a Tilda Swinton performance that's quite good and an actor I was not familiar with until I saw Wonka named Patterson Joseph who very different role in the beach he's quite jacked and then he plays Slugworth in Wonka to give you an idea if he is or is not jacked in that movie. But yeah I had a good time watching it.

Well, that's interesting. I would like, you know, I do remember like flashes of it. You know, I remember there's a sexy scene with this girl on the beach. I think her name was Virginia LaDoyenne or something like that. And then there was also, I remember just having my eyes open to,

don't they, doesn't he like ride around on bikes shooting Super Soakers at people at one point? You know, that's not one of the moments that stuck with me. But does that happen? What I'm saying is I can't say that it stuck with me. Okay, now I've got a follow up question. Did you watch this movie like very intently I can't say that it stuck with me. Okay, now I've got a follow-up question. Did you watch this movie, like, very intently,

or did you leave the room on occasion? I mean, you're allowed to leave the room, Doug. Well, anyway, I believe there's a scene. Now I feel like a gas lit, but I believe there's a scene in it where Leo is riding around on a moped or a bicycle or something and everybody has Super-soakers and they're all okay. Yes. Yes. Yes. I'm sorry I was envisioning it on the beach and I was like, I don't think that happened on the titular beach Oh, yeah, it does happen while they are in

Southeast Asia and I remember when I saw that I was like, oh Yes in the White Lotus a similar thing happens. Where the girls get squirted. Yes and yes so that I'm sorry for not yes-anding you in the moment. I was I couldn't I was like I don't think it there's super servers on the beach they're kind of there's a bit more primitive society but yes the in Thailand correct they get wet and wild. Yeah, that really opened my eyes

to having mixed feelings about going to Thailand because it seemed fun but also crazy at the same time. Right. All right, so yeah, and also my other little tidbit that I learned recently about the beach just because I was reading about the 28 years and days and weeks. Like Sam, what kind of overall arching title do you give those movies? Do you just call them the 28 movies? I would say the 28 trilogy. Oh, that's good. Okay. So I was reading about the 28 trilogy and people are holding out this weird hope for Ewan McGregor

cameo in the movie or they also wanted Killian Murphy from the first movie to show up somehow. But regardless, I learned that Ewan McGregor was this close, I'm holding my fingers close together, to be the Leo DiCaprio role in The Beach. That was What's His Name's First Choice, Danny Boyle. But then when he was able to get White Hot Leo DiCaprio to be in it instead, he went along with the studio's wishes to do that. And Ewan McGregor and him have been on the house with each other for many years and I guess more recently they made up.

Correct. Yeah, I was reading that as well that it really because they were in a partnership and he really loved that role. But like you said, you can't if Leo who was aggressively pursuing the role if he wants it and you want to get this movie made and you want people to see it, you kind of got to do that. And yeah, they were, they were not happy with each other. But then obviously, you know, we have the train spotting sequel and they seem to be in a better place. Yeah, that worked out. I'm just surprised about the timing on that because like when they would have shot that movie approximately 98, 99, wouldn't McGregor have been doing Obi-Wan already in the Star Wars prequels? I mean, the first one came out in 99.

The Beach seemed like a lot longer ago than me than the prequels. I know, it came out in 2000. That's crazy. Oh, wow. OK. I don't know. But yeah, I mean, that's the other thing is who knows?

Like, that could have been another excuse to do it with Leo is like, oh, oh, you're not available anyway. But you know how actors and directors can be. You have rat tails. That's just not gonna fit with the story here on the beach. You can't have rat tails on the beach, I'm so sorry. What do you like to recommend, Johnny? So, you know, I famously

Always recommend horror movies on here, even though I find horror fans insufferable But I'm gonna go with the coffee table. I don't know if you've seen this one. I have not it's Spanish so if you if you can't read you're fucked but 2022 I'm gonna I'm not gonna spoil it. Like this is one where like the less you know, the better. But dark comedy meets absolutely brutal slow burn horror. And it all starts by buying a glass coffee table where the salesperson says, this is unbreakable glass.

But you can probably figure out that it's this is unbreakable glass, but you can probably figure out that it's probably not unbreakable. But it has one of the most brutal death scenes very early on in it. And I don't know, it stayed with me. Slow burn, so if you're expecting nonstop kills, this probably isn't the one but this is a Yeah, it's like an existential interpersonal dread type horror movie

So if you're if you're down with that, I highly recommend it was actually maybe my favorite movie I've seen this year Now tell me about the scene with the Super Soakers Remember it did you see that part, you know, I missed the super soaker scene but That's a baby does get decapitated You really are you really Proceeded to started with I'm not gonna tell you much and then told people a lot of stuff that they it won't ruin it Oh, you don't promise. Yeah Well, I don't mean ruin in terms of I just mean in terms of people who don't want to see a baby decapitated

Probably avoid this one. Yes, I'm probably doing them a favor. Yeah, I think so I like to tell people when there's vomiting in a movie or at least I used to But I kind of slowed down on that because there's vomiting in every movie That's every movie has a scene where somebody throws up except for maybe I haven't seen it happen. Maybe Lilo and stitch doesn't If they stuck to the original story Alright Sam, what do you got for us? Well alright now obviously I'm sure you've had people recommend f1 It's just open so I don't think so. I don't think anybody's brought it up yet. Let me check my notes.

This is exciting. You read on the internet that people are always saying checks notes about stuff, but I'm really, I'm genuinely checking my notes right now. And no, I don't think anybody recommended F1. So you're going to or you? No, I'm going to. We're gonna recommend a companion piece. No, I'm gonna recommend F1. I saw it in theaters last week and it was a very fun popcorn movie, as they say.

I don't get too deep on it. You know, there's a lot of pretty paint by numbers story choices. But I will say that the racing sequences, the driving sequences on the F1 tracks were really shot very impressively. And you really do feel like you're kind of in the car with them.

And I think that was a pretty impressive technical feat to pull off. And I think it's worth it for people who love fun movie theater experiences, which has been lost for a lot of us, Doug. So I would recommend that sincerely for people who want a fun movie going experience. Now, but what do you think about the original title that they did not go with it was originally called 28 days of thunder later? Mm-hmm Honest I wish they had right cuz I don't one yeah

I've seen billboards for f1 with F is so flowery that it just looks like the movie's called one and So I but it doesn't seem to be hurting it And so I but it doesn't seem to be hurting it the marketing doesn't seem to be hurting the film because it's it's doing quite well Yeah, people seem very focused on like when I go and look to you know, the to pick a seat function on the website Everybody's crowding into the IMAX Screening yes, everybody wants to see it in IMAX. Does you think that's a that's the way to do it I didn't see it in iMac so and you still I enjoyed the heck out of it yeah you weren't sitting there going this is an iMacs no I was sitting

there maybe should be taller regular boring screening yep regular old boring 35 millimeter style because it wasn't actually shot on 35. I don't think. Do you think there's a chance in hell that Mr. Brad Pitt will get an acting nomination, or is it the kind of movie star role where he doesn't have to emote that much? I would look, never say never, but I would be surprised if in his body of work, this is where the Academy decided, no, let's make sure we get him a nice because he's very talented. But I don't know that this particular role required, you know, yeah, depths from either did the one that he won for once for time in Hollywood, like he was right.

Charismatic was all he had to do. Right. But I mean, yes charismatic, but I guess there's that level of I you know I love him in that movie I love the movie but that may have been more of a career thing. Yeah, absolutely so yeah, I feel like they covered that missile just be and other fun bread that movie. Well, it's also it's always great when you can split off

people and they're they're both lead roles we call one of them supporting and then that person wins because like everybody's just like wow That was an amazing supporting role that guy did where his part was pretty much the entire movie It's like splitting up cynthia rino and ariana grande just to make it easier for ariana to actually you know get the award Um, all right, but f1 G gets a big thumb up from Sam Levine. And I'm excited to hear that, Sam, because it has been on my radar, but I haven't pulled the trigger yet, because I do want to see it in IMAX,

and I want to see it in IMAX when nobody else is in the theater. The way IMAX was meant to be enjoyed. Yeah. Nicole Kidman style. But you know, first showing in the morning on a weekday. That's when you're going to that's when you're going to catch me at F1. Thanks for these recommendations, guys. We're going to play some games right after these messages.

And then somebody some executive said people won't give a damn if you call it beautiful yeah so that's the Use as an example just to remind everybody that movie is an overrated racist relic so sure but will there be any other clues other than the initials well here's the fun part Sam yeah I'm gonna tell you the initials and then you know you give you know you get you can give a guess if you want if you think you know what it is that's worth two points if you answer correctly but if you want a hint you think you know what it is. That's worth two points if you answer correctly. But if you want a hint, I will then tell you three people who are in the movie. And then you can take a crack at it. And if you get it right, you get one point. And if you miss,

then the next person who's turn it is, you know, we'll have all that information. They'll get a chance. And if it gets all that way'll have all that information, they'll get a chance. If it gets all that way down to the third person, they'll get a crack at it. But once we reveal the actors and actresses names, then you can only score one point. Okay. Got it.

With that extra information. But just so if Joe goes first and he can't get it, so just so I know, so if, if, if Joe goes first and he can't get it based on just the initials, does it go down the line where we each get to guess based on initials and then you give names or could Joe say, oh, I don't know, knock it down to one point. And then if they both miss it, you know. Exactly.

Okay. Yeah. The, the latter is, is how, how it works this time. We'll see. We'll see how that goes. But yeah, so basically, you're just saying I'll give me the names and I'll try, you know, try for one point, but I'm hoping that you'll be able to get some of these just based on the initials both because they're pretty fairly popular films that I've chosen. Cause that was fun that like you knew, we knew you knew one of them before he got to you. So like, put the pressure on everybody to just pass it to you. But speaking of things that hurt you the most it's time to play the little search engine Oh, wait a second I oh no, it doesn't work over zoom I was gonna play my train horn noise but But zoom cuts out when you blow into the microphone, you know make noises noises into it. Okay. So I learned that the hard way. Um, so I think you've all played this game before a little search engine. They could is a game where I typed a word into the internet movie database. And then I wrote down the top 10 movies that have that word in the title, according, you know, top 10 according to the current algorithm on IMDB. You will take turns guessing movies with this word in the title and you'll get

three guesses apiece total and in honor of Joe's movie and the fact that it is a word if At least two out of three of us have been in movies with that word in the title, but that's either here nor there Or is it? Ooh I bet it's here So we're gonna go joe then sam then johnny uh joe your Uh first what's your first guess a movie that would be the number one movie according IMDB with the word American?

I am going to guess American Psycho. American Psycho of course is a very well known. I bet you there's more people know the title American Psycho than have actually seen American Psycho. That's probably true. Both. I saw the Broadway musical and it was so fun for the first act and then the second act it's like they tried to have it make sense and have some sort of moral or something and much like the movie I guess it just sort of falls apart by the end number four on the list though so Joe is coming out of the gate with seven points

I should have mentioned that for anybody else who's never heard this game before number one's worth ten points and number ten is worth one point so that makes number four worth seven points if you're into all that math Sam? number four or seven points if you're into all that math. Sam, what's your first American movie that comes into your brain? Well, it did open fourth of July weekend. So perhaps there's a little love on the 26th anniversary for American pie. American pie is number one on the list. Wow. Yeah.

You've been sitting on it for a second here. Lots of the movies have the word american in the title But what one do you think would be? Potentially number two on the list. Yeah, I'm gonna go with another mean a suvarif like American Beauty That is interesting that her big movies Have the word American in the title. Oh, yeah, I never made that connection before and I Oh, yeah. I never made that connection before.

And I think American Beauty is like kind of a perfect movie to just fade away and be not spoken of much for. Right. It's problematic. It's problematic in so many ways. But maybe that's why people are looking it up, because it is number three. Wow. Wow. I'll only say the name of this movie because I'm very sure it's not in this top 10, but like the Minusuwari being in two films in 99 that were American blank became a thing. She did a movie that I think was already in the can and the studio changed the title to

the last American Virgin because she was in it. Wow. I believe that that's what happened. I believe that's untrue. OK. Yeah. I don't mean to lie. Fact check you. But last American version was Diane Franklin and movie from the 80s. Eve Anton. Yeah. And I'm remembering the name of the movie wrong.

But what there's something I get. There was some movie she did that'm remembering the name of the movie wrong, but there's something I get you. There was some movie she did that was in the can and they put the word American in it. Maybe it's literally just American Virgin. Maybe. Yeah. No, I mean that that story seems completely legit, but I just know that wasn't. That's okay. The last American Virgin. You're right. I'm getting it wrong, but I'm quite sure there's a Minasuvari movie with at least those two words in it, or certainly American. It didn't exist there before. The lead that gets the girl pregnant in Last American Virgin, Steve Anton, went on to be the guy that gets his dynamite, he gets blown off of the toilet in Goonies, and he directed the movie Burlesque.

Huh? An interesting career. Okay. Um, uh, I thought you were going to do another guest, Sam. I was like, Whoa, whoa, whoa, slow down. Hey, hey. Oh no, I, yeah. It's, uh, we're back to Joe for his second guess.

Yeah. And given that it's my second guess and that apparently American pie was the number one, just for fun, I'm going to say American pie too. How much fun is that though? I'm having a blast. If you break it down, if you really stop and think about it, I guess it's kind of fun because it is strangely number 13 on the list. Yeah, it didn't work out so good for American Pie 2 or for you, Joe. No, absolutely not. We all see that now. Tried to have fun and I got fitting in the ass pretty hard. Yeah, you gotta take this seriously, Sam.

I'm actually surprised. I would have figured American Pie 2 would have been up there. You'd think. Yeah, I would have thought, actually. For fuck's sake. How about, I just feel like this is just a cluster. People just wanted one piece of pie, Sam. No. No.

Isn't the tagline to that movie about something about seconds coming back? Going back for seconds or something. Yeah. I'll say a deeply troubling film from the late 90s, American History X. Oh, the most troubling. Directed by Humpty Dumpty. One of my most haunted. Wasn't it a guy named Ray? It was like Tony Kay, I think it was his name, but he famously,

the studio took the cut away from him. Yeah. And he was so angry with the final cut, he wanted to be credited as Humpty Dumpty. Yeah. So. But did it really come out with the name Humpty Dumpty on it? No, it didn't.

No. Yeah, he just wanted it. They just said, fuck you. You really leave your name on this horrifying movie. I mean, I don't I wouldn't say it's a bad movie. I just say it's like one of the most upsetting, you know, this specific scene I'm thinking of that I talk about. Johnny. Where did that one end up?

Yeah, am I on the list? Is it on the list? No, we're not talking about it It's number six Yeah, it's on the list I just don't want to talk about it anymore So it's number six and that gave Sam five more points he has 15 Johnny has eight. So What's that number two movie or number five? Okay, you you know?

Okay, so I got a couple in the chamber not okay, but I'm gonna go with American gangster Denzel Yes, and I will talk about it. Oh, thank God. Yeah. Because that's the one with Russell Crowe and they're like warring gangsters and everybody thought it was going to be amazing. And then it was just okay. It was deice. Yeah. Uh, number seven on the list, four points. Okay. Not enough. And not enough, but still keeping you keeping you in the hunt as it were the number two slot, the number five, and then eight, nine and eight, nine and 10 won't do you any good, Joe. No, they will not.

But if you can manage to name the number five movie that would put you in second place But if you give up with the number two you would take the lead whoa, okay Lot still on the table. I'm gonna go with American Hustle So many on the table. I was kind of surprised pleasantly surprised by how many movies have American in the title and Also, like in the top ten. There's like only one that I haven't seen which is crazy but American us those number nine. Yeah

So not enough to get you there, but still You get two more pride points. I'll take them. Yeah for a grand total of nine But Sam you could cement the win here Should have been writing these down. So we said we said we got American pie We have American Beauty. We have American psycho American history X, right?

Yeah, I wrote them down. It's Pie, Psycho, Hustle, Pie 2, Gangster, History X, and Beauty. Attaboy. So nobody said, oh, God, is this even on there? You need the number two movie, Sam. You've got to shoot for the top. I'm, I feel like I'm running out of American movies. Um, American made that's a movie.

The Tom Cruise movie, American made with Tom Cruise. It's probably not even on there. No. Burr five. Whoa. That's crazy. That's number five Yeah, cuz you know Tom Cruise. He's the he's got staying power making some moves. It's popular. I heard he's got all the right moves he wants to do some movie about

being underwater with Anna Darmis and the Studio said no at the budgets too high so now he's shopping it around I Saw that today But at number five on the list, that's worth six points for Sam. So I'm very surprised that shocking Yeah Johnny's got 12. So with nine more points, he still can't catch you at all Yeah, that was that was quite a pull Sam I am very deeply surprised how high on the list that is. Yeah, it's crazy

All right, but Johnny you want to just for yeah, I would have said Yeah, my next one would have been American Graffiti You know, you know classic best picture nominee brought us first green appearance by Suzanne summer Number 10 on the list so Only worth one more point

So that means that Sam is officially our win Doug when you told when you told Sam to try and shoot for a high one, were you trying to give him a hint that American Sniper was up there? No. I try not to give any hints, especially to Sam. But American Sniper was number eight on the list. So that was worth just three points.

I have a guess for number two, Doug, but the fact I feel like you've seen all of these movies that we've said, and you said there's one you haven't seen. Yeah, I want to guess like American fiction, which just popped into my brain, but I feel like you definitely saw that. I did definitely see that it came in at number 12. Oh, wow. An American and Paris movie. in American and Paris. Yeah, at American and Paris. I don't even see it anywhere.
