Starting point is 00:00:01 Calling all Doug Gloves movies, listeners, that's you. We're conducting an audience survey at gum.fm slash dLM, and we want to hear from you so we can keep making content you love. You know this, we know this, there are ads on our podcast. We want to improve that experience, but in order to do this, we need to know a little bit more about you, our audience. The survey is a quick, easy, and free way to support this podcast. It'll take you two minutes and you'll be helping us out so much by doing it.
Starting point is 00:00:38 Go to gum.fm slash dLM to fill out our audience survey. That's gum.m.fm slash dLM. Thank you and enjoy the show. Doug hates candy wrappers screening maybe sticky seeds with 50 as a Or kernels in his teeth, they're still not Hey everybody, my name is Doug and I love movies. This is Doug Loves movies. That's the thing I forgot to do before we started
Starting point is 00:01:28 is to remind everybody to do that, and you did it anyway, but I didn't trust it, so that's why I said it too. We're coming to you once again from Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. It's Friday morning, September 18, 2026, I'm very delighted and surprised by the energy in this room, but that's part of the fun of Fantastic Fest.
Starting point is 00:01:58 And we are in the Alamo Draftas, Lamar's Highball Lounge, everybody. And most of the audience, well, I wrote this before I found out it wasn't true. I was going to say most of the audience is just waiting for the next movie to be called here at this amazing festival. but if anybody does need to go one of the movies you know go ahead and go it won't hurt my feelings
Starting point is 00:02:26 or if any one of you is like sitting here thinking God it's so hot outside I want to just go out there and lay down on the cement and end it all then you can go ahead and do that I'm about to bring my three guests up here but let's find out what is going on today with the prize bag
Starting point is 00:02:46 There's some contents in this bag that none of them are as good as the bag itself. It really is a nice limited edition item and the stuff inside of it is mostly you know, stuff I could travel with stuff I could get through TSA with.
Starting point is 00:03:07 There is a Super Troopers 3 coozy. Yeah, a nice beer coozy. Hold your applause until the end. of this entire show. And then we've got three pins, two Doug Benson pins, and one Douglas Moves'y Spin. And one of the Doug Benson's spin,
Starting point is 00:03:28 I've got like, it's like me as Willie Wonka. And those are available. Where are you going to be and when, Terry? Outside towards the right. Outside towards the right. And when are you going to be there? Because you're obviously not out there selling pins right now. After this?
Starting point is 00:03:45 All right. Yeah, so go out there and look for Terry if you want to get your hands on one of those. And some Douglas movie stickers. Like I said, it's not great. Oh, and a silicone pipe from my friends at Peacemaker. Yeah, and you know how Peace is spelled in Peacemaker. And that item has only been used once. Are you ready to get the guests out here?
Starting point is 00:04:16 Let's freaking do this. Please. Welcome to the stage, John Earler and Nick Simon. Come on up, fellas. John, if you could sit in the seat closest to me, and if Nick can sit in the seat farthest away from me, that would be terrific. Go ahead and grab you, yeah, set yourself up.
Starting point is 00:04:45 You're the furthest seat over there, Nick. The furthest one over, yeah. I gotta leave one open. Oh, got it, got it. Yeah. John, now can you scoot your back just a little bit so I can see the other guests, you giant person. There's a lot of... You big, adorable person. Thank you. That's nice.
Starting point is 00:05:04 There you go. All right. Is there going to be somebody here? There is. Elijah? Yeah, I always leave the seat for Elijah. Yeah? Yep, the door is open.
Starting point is 00:05:14 It's air-conditioned in here. I don't know why he's not here yet. I had a last-minute fallout today. Yeah, one of the people that's here at the festival and directed a movie was going to be a guest, but he is not here, but through no fault of his own. And so I thought, you know what,
Starting point is 00:05:44 let's see if some other effort in this audience brought a goddamn name tag, and if they did, let's make that person the third guest today. Please welcome to this stage. He doesn't know this is happening. James Pound, get up here, buddy. Come on up.
Starting point is 00:06:04 There's no stairs anywhere close to where you are right now. So I'm going to have to vamp while you work your way through the room. Oh, there he goes. He's a man on a mission. All right. Now let's meet our three guests individually, alphabetically, by first name. He is the writer and co-director of the cycle playing here at Fet. No, that's who was supposed to be here.
Starting point is 00:06:29 He is a man who brought a name tag. Give it up for James Pound, everybody. Hello. Hey, dude. How many times you think you've been to Douglas movies? Oh, been to it 20 plus, probably? Possibly, yeah. And then how many times did you win the prize bag?
Starting point is 00:06:53 Maybe eight. That's what happens. If you bring the name, that's why he went to the effort today because he wanted some more crap. And that's probably most of these things in the bag today. You probably won already. Have a few Doug Benson pins.
Starting point is 00:07:09 Yeah, yeah. So you're set on that. So you don't need to win today. You're going to win on that for somebody else. And anything else you want to tell people about yourself? Yeah. Actually, I have a show at the festival on two. Tuesday that I produce here at the highball every month called Power Pints.
Starting point is 00:07:29 It's a comedy presentational show. 8 p.m. on Tuesday, if you're at the festival, drop in. Right on. People of Austin can come too, though, right? I think so. Yeah. I don't know how big. I don't think they're vigorous about the badges to get into this today.
Starting point is 00:07:49 So I should have. But the thing is, is when I go on the podcast and say, hey, I'm going to be taping the podcast. maybe you can get in. Because obviously badge holders would have priority. If this place was packed with badge holders, we wouldn't let anybody else in. So people don't like to go to a thing that they might get into,
Starting point is 00:08:07 unless they're super into it. All right, let's meet the other two guests who are exactly who they said they were going to be. And I appreciate that about them. He is the head marker of the Master Pancake Theater. movie mocking troupe you can see in person and these days I think they're doing a lot of stuff online it's John Erler everybody hi thank you it's so great to be here on Douglove movie
Starting point is 00:08:39 I mean that's what the the listeners don't don't aren't in on that gag but earlier this show was referred to as as Doug Love's movie by our friend Hagee in the booth stay tuned everybody it's almost time for Doug Love movie no he said Doug loves movie he used the S one time okay but he singularized the movies
Starting point is 00:09:05 yeah what if you only loved one movie and you had to talk about it every single show this happens all the time is when I invite people to come on the show they say what movie are we going to be talking about and I just have to go oh you know just all of them you know like any movie could come up during it
Starting point is 00:09:25 and hopefully we'll all learn something in the process. I think we do. We always learn something. Yeah, and they made a lovely slide that's like a scary movie, Douglas Movies podcast slide, and of course, at Fantastic Fest on social media
Starting point is 00:09:40 and at Douglas Movies on X, formerly Twitter. You have to say that every time. Formerly Twitter. It's onerous. shouldn't have to say it. But you have to because it would anger the person who made that dumb change. Do you want to say his name?
Starting point is 00:10:00 She has to lay it on there. Really? I don't want to bring the Lord Jesus Christ into this. Anyway, thank you for being here, John. It's great to be here. We'll talk to you again in a minute. Yeah? I was just going to address a question you had.
Starting point is 00:10:18 I had a question? About. I had a, I wondered. You wondered about pot stores and how they're getting along now with the new regulations in Texas. Yeah. I think there's one strain of weed that's still legal. Oh. Just one.
Starting point is 00:10:33 Okay. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Delta 9 is still legal. Is that right? The 10. And the 10? You call it the 10? Or the 10. Are you a big fan of the 10?
Starting point is 00:10:42 I don't know. I'm just never going to go back now if the sixes and sevens are gone. Nobody does that anymore, right? Sixes and sevens. It was good. I thought it was good. But, yeah, I don't know how the stores that sell a bunch of stuff are operating at this point.
Starting point is 00:11:02 I'm lucky because I only like Delta 9, so I'm still okay. We looked it up, and Austin does not prioritize personal amount, you know, charging people that have personal amounts. So you just have to, I have to be like, well, my personal amount is, you know, several pounds. So that's just how it's going to be. But thank you for edgimicating me on that. And let's welcome our third guest, everybody. He is the director of what happened to Doris playing here at the festival.
Starting point is 00:11:36 It's Nick Simon. Thank you. Check out this question that I have for him, John. So what happened to Doris? A lot. Is that a spoiler? Without spoilers. Yeah, she was a...
Starting point is 00:11:54 It's based on a true story of Doris Byther who was attacked by a unseen ghost, basically, in 1974. So you believe in ghosts. I do. Yeah, because you call it a true story. It is a true story. I love it. It's a true story.
Starting point is 00:12:11 What's the rating of this movie? It's rated R. Oh, so this ghost is... It's a very terrible ghost. It's a bad ghost. It's the true story. story with Frank D. Lafayette made, wrote a book in the late 70s called The Entity, which they made a movie.
Starting point is 00:12:27 Yes, with Barbara Hershey. So it's the true story of that. Oh, wow. So, yeah, it's a, it's a bad, bad ghost. I didn't know that it was connected to the entity. I really thought you were like trying to, you know, jumpstart a genre. No. Like there should be more lady being attacked by ghost movies.
Starting point is 00:12:48 Hey, I came up with this thing. and it's a yeah no it's it's all yeah it's it's the true story behind that story when does it play here at the festival we've screened sunday night at 520 and then again on wednesday night oh okay i i'm locked into one of those i forget i forget which one and then beyond that when when can the public when can the world see this movie we are still waiting to hear so i believe in 2027 is what i've been told oh okay but theaters uh i believe so yes Nice. We're hoping so.
Starting point is 00:13:20 Sure, sure. I mean, you can't, you know, what are you going to do these days? You never know. Look at fucking, you know, Coyote versus Acme. Incredible. Incredible movie. No one involved in that movie thought, well, this is never going to be seen. You know, like when they're making it, they're making a big budget studio movie with all these legendary characters.
Starting point is 00:13:39 And it's really, really good. It's so good. It's ridiculous how good it is. Well, thank you for being here. I look forward to seeing your movie. Seeing your movie. Oh, should we say that the lady in question is Heather Graham? That should, you know, boost interest because she's always great. Heather is wonderful, also starring Mimi Rogers, who is also great.
Starting point is 00:13:59 And yeah, I think it's a I hope people like it. We'll see. That Mimi and Rogers is a good poker player. Really? I didn't know that. She goes on she's on all those celebrity poker tournament things. That makes sense. She's good at it. Yes, because she's got a steely-eyed glare. She really does. Yeah. Holy shit. I would want to be the ghost trying to attack. Oh, she doesn't get a chance. She's not the good. Okay, good. She's not the, yeah. She's safe. How do you feel about movie trivia, Nick Simon? I was on chat. Like, I usually lock up and like a deer in headlights. So I usually forget every single thing I've ever known. And I know a lot. So that should be, we'll see. We'll see how it goes. Yeah. I love movie trivia, but I will notoriously choke. Okay. You don't want me on your team.
Starting point is 00:14:48 Well, these guys, as you probably have become wildly aware, have really been ensconced in this show over the years. So I think they're going to be tough competitors. So good luck. Thank you. I appreciate it. Give them a little more support. Say some encouraging things.
Starting point is 00:15:09 We're not that good. Hey, man. Hey, man, you're going to lose. I don't have a great track record. here. James has never played. He's only been an audience member. So don't worry about it.
Starting point is 00:15:23 But he knows all the games. I appreciate that. You've played a bunch of times. How many times do you think you've been on? A lot, but I don't do well. You do well in our hearts. That's all that is. Say that to Nick.
Starting point is 00:15:36 He needs to hear it. Nick, we all have you in our hearts. I feel better now. And also, the other thing I should say is anybody can win. Okay. That's how this works. You just never know what's going to be, you know, something you know about.
Starting point is 00:15:52 But before we play some games, hashtag but first, I would like to ask each of you to recommend one movie, starting with James. What's a movie that you really are behind? Like, people should see this shit. I mean, we're at Fantastic Fest. We're edging into October. So I'm going to go with an underseen, in my opinion, a horror movie called Behind the Mask, The Rise of Leslie Vernon. So great. Yeah, okay.
Starting point is 00:16:23 Oh, people love it. It's a really fun, like, mockumentary horror. There's lots of guest appearance, like Zelda Rubenstein pops up and the Freddie Krueger guy, Robert England. There's lots of guest appearances in there, and it's a really creative concept, and it's real fun and games and funny until it's not. It gets really creepy and scary at the end. How old is this movie? I think it was like 2002, I'm guessing. Because Zelda's not with us anymore, right?
Starting point is 00:16:53 No. Okay. You're like, Zelda pops in. I'm like, oh, this has ghosts too. And what was it called again? Behind the Mask, the Rise of Leslie Vernon. Why have I never even heard of this? Oh, really?
Starting point is 00:17:08 Oh, it's great. Yeah, it's really fun. I feel foolish. The Rise of Leslie. Vernon? Okay. And where do you think it's available? Is it like a streaming somewhere or something? Maybe.
Starting point is 00:17:22 Can it be? Yeah, maybe this will wish it into existence somewhere, but it sounds great. So I will check that out if and when I can't. John, what would you like to recommend? Let's see. I
Starting point is 00:17:39 recently had to do not a rewatch, but a first time watch of a lot of Robert Patinson movies? I hate when that happens. Like when you get that call, hey, listen, man, you're going to have to watch a lot of... I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you're going to have to watch a lot of Robert Pattinson movies.
Starting point is 00:17:58 All five Twilights. The one where it turns out he's walking into 9-11 at the end. Don't say too much. That's a laugh, riot. And then, no, that's the thing. I was just saying this recently about Robert Pattinson. He's one of my favorite actors right now, and I used to just think he was a bland, boring, model-looking guy
Starting point is 00:18:17 who didn't seem to enjoy his work. And then I realized, oh, that was all because of Twilight. And now he picks the most interesting parts. Like, I don't like all the movies he's in, but they're interesting. He's always taking chances. Yeah. So which one were you about to recommend? Well, you know, we did a clip show.
Starting point is 00:18:37 You know, sometimes we pay tribute to an actor at Master Pancake, and we roast them in a... Loving tribute. And scenes from a bunch of their movies. Scenes for a bunch of different movies. Tom Hanks, Hanxgiving every November we do. Right.
Starting point is 00:18:50 Does this Robert Pattinson have a clever punny name when you do that? Yes. I mean. Robert Pattinson theater instead of pancake? That, no. How could I have not thought of that? That's great.
Starting point is 00:19:04 No. We often do like marathon suffix on the end of things. Athon? Cage athon. Nick Cage is on. So this is Patton Thon. Okay. Robert Pattonthon.
Starting point is 00:19:17 Okay. So it sounds like you have a list when you're saying his name. It sounds like you're trying to say it. Yeah. Anyway. So I watched a ton of his movies and I revisited all the Twilights and the first one's the best one by far. Okay. Like I wish they had gotten Catherine Hardwick to direct all of them.
Starting point is 00:19:34 I don't know why they got rid of her after the first one. You know, because that's how it works. They like turned out too good. Yeah. I mean, what I'm like, let's drag this IP through the mud. These teenage girls are going to come to matter what the fuck we do. Yeah. The lighthouse.
Starting point is 00:19:50 Probably everybody's seen the lighthouse. It was my second watch. And for some reason the first time I wasn't a huge fan, but the second time it really hit. And I love The Lighthouse now. Yeah, I think it's kind of the kind of movie that if I were to watch it again, I might appreciate it a little more. Because the first time through, you really are just like,
Starting point is 00:20:09 well, now. what? Like, what is the point where are we going? And then when it's all done, you're like, well, that was a very interesting movie, but seeing it again could be fun. But that's also what, that was one of the first ones. It was like, oh, this Robert Pattson guy
Starting point is 00:20:24 is not fucking around. Like, he really wants to he wants to swing for the fences. Yeah. It's just him and Willem Defoe. Yeah, that's it. And the, you know, whatever smells they're putting into the air. It's a very smelly movie. It is, right?
Starting point is 00:20:41 I'm so grateful they haven't. Is that format where they throw water on you and shake your chair? Oh. Yeah. They haven't got to sense yet, have they? No, they should do that. Gross smells. I went to a screening, a movie party screening of this, and everybody got whoopee cushions. Oh.
Starting point is 00:21:00 There's a lot of farting in the movie. There was farting throughout. Yeah, that's what I was driving at. I was just trying to, you know, I try not to use the F word. So the lighthouse, a very, interesting experience if you haven't had it or try it again. And I asked for one movie, John.
Starting point is 00:21:17 Well, I'm picking Twilight. See, Nick, he was not wrong. He's bad at this. He can't even just name one movie. The show's called Doug Love Movie. Doug Love Movie. Come on, John. I just need one movie. All right. All right, Nick, what do you got for us? You brought up Heather Graham, and this
Starting point is 00:21:34 is something I talked to John about this earlier. This is something I talked to her about almost every day on set, which is one of favorite movies, Bowfinger. Which I love that movie, and I don't think it's appreciated enough, and it should be, you know, I think it's definitely top 10. I think it gets a rise out of people like this. Like the people who like it really like it, you know, people are really into it.
Starting point is 00:21:57 And it's very Eddie Murphy, like, that was another one where I thought, this guy, it's, the versatility is off the charts, you know, it's crazy. And always fun to go back and see early, Steve. Martin you know because you look at him now with his white hair and you go what about 30 years ago what did he have a real nice head of dark hair then but he did at one point you know there's enough if you go back far enough like before the jerk he did have like brown hair for a long really really like like a hippie yeah but anyway back to Bowfinger that's got to be available like on
Starting point is 00:22:36 it's streaming and it's been available so yeah I think it's strange somewhere I know I I think I've bought every version of it on every form of physical media from VHS to Luray. And I, I, I literally, I have T-shirts for Bofinger. I talked to Heather about Bofinger a lot. And she was like, I'm really proud of the work. I'm like, you should be. It was great.
Starting point is 00:22:53 Well, it sounds to me like that would be the perfect movie for you to talk about on Nick Love's Movie. Nick Love's Movie. Yeah, start your own podcast. Nick Love's Bofinger. You know, like there's been podcasts like I did a bunch of guest appearances on, These guys did, like, Star Wars Minute, that, like, watched all the Star Wars movies one minute at a time.
Starting point is 00:23:13 Like, each episode was about one minute of it. And I did it a few times because it's crazy how much there is to talk about one minute of Star Wars is plenty to say about every minute. But maybe Bowfinger would work like that, too. Probably step on a lot of jokes if you're cutting off every 60 seconds. A finger of Boe Finger? Yeah, I'll try it. I mean, you'll see.
Starting point is 00:23:36 I'll look into it and see how it goes. Okay. Well, we started late, and they told me I have way more, much more time than I need. So I think we're doing good on time. And I am going to take our first commercial break. We'll be right back. Today's show is brought to in part by Hymns. Get it?
Starting point is 00:27:41 And then James is playing for Amanda All Seasons. And Nick is, yeah. And Nick is playing for
Starting point is 00:27:49 Alice, son of Sam. And whoever wins today, they're going to get the Douglas movies tote bag.
Starting point is 00:28:01 Now, the first game today, since I'm in Austin, this is a game that was essentially created here with the help of some of my radio friends. And so they all get credit and have to play it when I'm here.
Starting point is 00:28:16 This is Alex's Jason and Deb's IMDB game, aka Talking Talkies. That's what Jason called it, Talking Talkies. I never really like that. All right, so every actor has an IMDB page. And when you go to that page, it says at the top four movies. has four little movie posters, and it says, best known for. And every actor has one.
Starting point is 00:28:47 So what I'm going to do is I'm going to start reading off the titles in someone's top four on IMDB. And when you think you know who it is, you can buzz in by saying your own name into the microphone. Then I will call on you, and then you will say an answer. But here's the thing. you know lots of people are like whatever the first movie I list is lots of people are in that movie so it might be a little too early to buzz in because then then you might just be taking a guess but sometimes it's you know worth it but if you're wrong it's negative one point but if you're right you get bonus points for every additional movie you can name in the top four once you've gotten that one correct in the first place you've played this job I think I have Yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:37 What if you called it best known for? Best known for. Well, I'm not looking for a new name for it. Well, you expressed dissatisfaction of one of the old things. No, I was just teasing.
Starting point is 00:29:49 I don't think he'll even hear it, but I was just teasing Jason that he called it Talking Talkies. Because, you know, I guess there's so there's no silent films in this game. That's good.
Starting point is 00:29:59 And there never should be. Well, that's actually kind of fun. You know the title. of silent film star movies like Charlie Chaplin is like the great dictator yeah what's the what's the one where he's hanging from the clock Harry Lloyd Harry Lloyd that's not it's not his first name Harry Lloyd is from a dumb and dumber oh Harold Harold Harry and Lloyd but it is Harold Harold Harold Lloyd Harold Harold yes yes he had to be more formal with a guy hanging from a clock
Starting point is 00:30:34 yeah but what was that movie called time flies Maybe? That's good. Yeah, let's go with that. Somebody knows. All right. We're going to move on to the cinema with speaking words
Starting point is 00:30:46 and other sounds in it. I think I explained everything. Are you ready for your first round? Yes. Okay. You don't all have to answer. Nick, how are you feeling? You don't all have to say yes,
Starting point is 00:30:58 this isn't the emergency exit row. How are you feeling? I'm already drawn blanks. Okay. You're pre-drawing a blank. I'm pre-drawing a blank. I've forgotten all movies and movie actors, so I'm screwed. All right, here we go.
Starting point is 00:31:17 This person is in Bride of Frankenstein, The Mummy. John. From 1982. Yes, John? Oh, no. Oh, shit. That was driving. Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:31:40 I'm drawing a blank. What's your guess? No guess? No, I'll go with my original guest, which is Boris Karloff. Oh, okay. But I don't think that's possible. I screwed up, though. It's 1932.
Starting point is 00:31:55 Oh. Well, then I got a shot. I did say it wrong, yeah. I don't even know if there was one in 82. I mean, I know there obviously are more recent mummies with Brendan Frazier. Right. But Boris Karloff is. the correct answer.
Starting point is 00:32:11 What a roller coaster. No, that was super fun. I wish I would fuck up like that more often. I didn't say one name. What if I hadn't gone with my original guest and I changed it to a 1982 actor? Well, that's why I corrected it. But you already had said Boris Karloff.
Starting point is 00:32:28 I'm just in it for the right. We're good to go. He knows what it is. But now, name, we got Bride of Frankenstein and the mummy from 32, but name two more. Boris Karloff movies for two more points. Frankenstein.
Starting point is 00:32:45 Just straight up Frankenstein? Straight up Frankenstein. Regular Frankenstein? No, no spousal situations. Okay, and then what's your next one? Do you have another one? I better come up with one. He's a, I mean, he's a voice in a movie I love,
Starting point is 00:33:01 but it didn't make his top four. Oh, interesting. Yeah, do you know Mad Monster Party? No, can I guess that? No. I just told you it's not, it didn't make his top four. Oh, it didn't make the top four. Okay.
Starting point is 00:33:14 Aberding Costello meet him. Oh, yeah. They're really, I really do think they just used his name because he played all the monsters. But Frankenstein was correct. So one more point for Frankenstein. But then his fourth movie is the Black Cat. I would never. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:32 Yeah. Wouldn't have come up with that. But so you're out of the gate with two points, John. I'm excited. Yeah. Do you know the Black Cat? Would you have gotten the black cat? I wouldn't have guessed a black cat.
Starting point is 00:33:41 Okay. I'm aware of it, yeah. All right. I wouldn't have guessed it. I'm more of a what? I'm more of aware of it. Okay. Make sure you get your mic close.
Starting point is 00:33:48 Sorry, sorry. Yeah, it does. It's annoying. Would you have guessed the black cat? No. Okay. It's great to have you here, James. He's focused.
Starting point is 00:34:02 Round two. The first movie, Dracula. The second movie, The Black Cat. Third movie, Island of Lost Souls. Me. John Erler. I'm just going to guess.
Starting point is 00:34:18 Okay. Bella Lugosi is correct. They've gotten it with my gut. It's Bello Lugosi. You're smelling what the dog is cooking. Okay. And then what's your fourth guess for a potential extra point? I'm going to say Plan 9 from outer space?
Starting point is 00:34:38 No? No. I don't, you know, best known for, I guess it makes sense. But, you know, but a lot of times it's like his own love, you know, his family decides what is tough for us. Or his publicist. I don't know if he would have a publicist at this point. But they went with Son of Frankenstein. Okay.
Starting point is 00:34:59 Yeah, exactly. But that you still got two points for that. Great. I mean, one more point because you got it right. Okay. round three first movie is the wolf man
Starting point is 00:35:14 me oh John's taken a risk here he could end up getting a negative point if he doesn't get this right oh shit I forgot about that yeah it could be a penalty
Starting point is 00:35:24 we'll see what you do oh god I hope it's I hope it's Lon Cheney I'm sorry it is not Lon Cheney so we have to dock you one point now you're down to two
Starting point is 00:35:36 still two points in the lead James Wow James I can't believe this is happening What's your answer Bert Lancaster? I don't think his name has ever been said Quite like that before
Starting point is 00:35:51 Bert Lancaster Hmm No I'm sorry it's not Bert Lancaster So James is in the hole And I'm gonna wait I'm gonna wait for his own I'm gonna wait this out
Starting point is 00:36:06 Yeah The second movie is High Noon. And then the third movie is of mice and men. You want the fourth one? Oh, well, you might be able to get a bonus point for the fourth one. If you can guess it. You don't want to guess wrong. And then the fourth one is Frankenstein meets the Wolfman.
Starting point is 00:36:38 So I think I know which one he played in that. So it's Wolfman, High Noon, of Mice. and men. Can I phone a friend? Classy ass movies. And then Frankenstein meets the wolf man. I don't know. Okay.
Starting point is 00:36:53 You know, some might argue that I, you know, called it a technicality, but I really stick to, you know, exactly what is written down. And the actor's name is Lon Cheney Jr. Oh. What? You just said Lon Cheney.
Starting point is 00:37:10 Oh. That was a trick question. You should ask me to say, specify it, I would have specified. Be more specific, yeah, what about, Ken Jennings? Oh, okay. All right. Yeah, he's only half as high as I am.
Starting point is 00:37:24 Okay. All right. You're right. You're right. Nobody gets a point on that one. You're well in the lead, John, so don't you panic. No, I'm panicked. But here's the final round of this game. And the first movie is called
Starting point is 00:37:37 Hellboy 2, the Golden Army. Second movie is the shape of water. Nick. Who is it? Doug Jones. Doug Jones is the answer. Oh, this is an exciting finish, Nick. Because if you can name two more movies
Starting point is 00:37:56 in which Doug Jones appeared, you will get two more points and you will win the game. If you only get one, you'll still be in a tie with John. And where am I? Just name two more. We got Hellboy 2 in Shape of Water.
Starting point is 00:38:14 Name two more movies you think are in Doug Jones top four. I'm going to say Hellboy 1 And And just movies No TV shows Just movies Hellboy 1 And he did a
Starting point is 00:38:31 I don't think I would be top 4 though He did a Nosphiratu That came out right around Like a year before the other one I might say that just because people might have clicked on it by accident Thinking it was the other Naspirot 2 Okay
Starting point is 00:38:48 So You got one right You missed it big one. Probably his best monster he's ever been, Pan's Labrower. Oh, duh. Oh my God. See, this is what I'm doing. This is what I talk about. You know, you just needed to open your eyes.
Starting point is 00:39:01 Yes. Yeah, if I... Sorry. That are in the middle of your hand. But yes, Hellboy 1 did make the cut. And so you got an extra point for that. And that puts you in a tie with John for two points each.
Starting point is 00:39:17 We have to do a tie breaker. Oh, no. And this is just the first one to buzz in with their name and get this one right. And you know the theme at this point. This is actors who've played a lot of monsters or at least more than one.
Starting point is 00:39:34 And this person, their number one movie, which I wish I could crawl up into IMDB and tell him what the fuck is this his number one movie for. But anyway, his number one movie is Congo. Fucking Congo. Rick Baker? Nick. Nick.
Starting point is 00:39:52 Rick Baker? Nick Rick Baker. Is he Kong? No. Because he was King Kong. He did the effects. Okay. He was in the suit for King Kong, right?
Starting point is 00:40:03 Yeah. Yeah. The 79. Seventy's one, yeah. Okay. Keep going. Nobody else for cargo. The second movie is Muppet Treasure Island.
Starting point is 00:40:15 It's just between James and John now. I'm sorry. Oh, James is not because he's out too. James, you're back. It's just John. It's just John. Oh. Keep going.
Starting point is 00:40:29 Clue. Oh, okay. All right. Who is it? Me. Tim Curry. Tim Curry is correct. All these points left on the board.
Starting point is 00:40:41 For some reason, his fourth title, what do you think the fourth title is? Oh. It's the one that started at all. Oh, Rocky Horror. Rocky Horror Picture Show is his fourth best known for. So they make some interesting choices over there. But rest of peace, Tim Curry.
Starting point is 00:41:03 And congratulations. John, you won that game. That's for you, Britt. It ain't over yet, though. No, it is not over yet. And as a lot of us here today know, it just means he's going first in our next game. and that game is called
Starting point is 00:41:25 ABCD's nuts this is a spelling game Nick James and John are probably familiar with it and by spelling I just mean that we're going to take turns the three of you naming movies to begin with a certain letter and what we're going to spell today is because it's a film playing here at Fantastic Fest starring Robert Pattinson as Chris
Starting point is 00:41:55 Hanson as a man trying to capture monsters so it really fits into the theme this year. What did you call him? A man? Okay. I heard something else, but I was just curious. A man doing what? Who tries to catch monsters? Okay.
Starting point is 00:42:12 I heard something else. I heard mangina. I heard mangina. Did anybody else hear that? He's a mangina. And the movie is called Prime Time. So we're special. Prime time. By spelling, I mean we're going to start with John and then we'll go to James and then to Nick.
Starting point is 00:42:38 Let's go the other way, Nick and then James. And John gets the first letter P, primetime P. He guesses any movie that begins with the letter P. If he matches what I wrote down, he wins. Obviously very hard to match on the very first guess because as this goes along, a theme will quickly emerge and then you have to guess based on the theme will help you to maybe narrow it down to one specific movie for a particular letter and the first person who matches on their letter is the winner of the game and don't feel bad if nobody matches because that happens a lot.
Starting point is 00:43:18 The letter P. John Erler. Doug? Yes. Planet of the Apes. Fantastic guess. Thank you. Incredible movie the first time they did it. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:43:32 Mark Wahlberg can go screw. The movie I wrote down is Phineas and Ferb the movie. So close. Right? But you'll see. It fits the theme. The next letter for Nick is the letter R. Any movie that begins with R or one you think that begins with R
Starting point is 00:43:53 that has some sort of connection to Phineas and Furb. the movie. So if you're going to animated, if you go, Rugrats movie, I don't know. Oh, that's a fun guess. I wrote down Reno 9-11 Miami. And that's the proper way to say at 9-11.
Starting point is 00:44:20 Okay. I to James. Inspector Gadget. Oh, that's a fantastic guess. I wrote down I spy. But that was a really good guess. Back to John with M. Master and Commander.
Starting point is 00:44:40 The far side of the world. That movie had too many extra words. Like, why is there a colon in more words when it's not a sequel? It doesn't make any sense. But no, that is not what I wrote down because I don't have that kind of space on this piece of paper. I wrote down Maverick. Oh. Maverick.
Starting point is 00:44:59 Top Gun? No, Maverick. The other one? You maverick. Non-top gun. The one that fits the theme. E is the next letter to Nick, and this will be impossible for you to get,
Starting point is 00:45:12 so just say any movie that begins with letter E. Do you count the, or is that like a T? No, does. Yeah, duh, the is a T. So, God, okay. Eraserhead. That's a good one, but that's not what I wrote. I wrote, edge of darkness.
Starting point is 00:45:31 There's a, okay. T is the next. There's a theme. Yeah, there's a theme, and it's real, but it is also confusing. Can we ask you to say all the movies that have been half so far? Yeah, Finney Furb, Reno, I spy, Maverick, Edge of Darkness. T is the letter to James. Time Cop?
Starting point is 00:45:53 Twin Peaks, Fire Walk with me. Our I is the next letter for John. Island of Dr. Moreau. Inspector Gadget Amazing Wow I'm so happy when that happens Okay so M to Nick
Starting point is 00:46:23 Moon Raker No No McHale's Navy Can I guess the theme? No James's last letter is E Bring it home, you got this
Starting point is 00:46:37 E Everything everywhere all it went. Oh, that is an E, but that's not the one I was looking for. These are all TV shows that became motion pictures, and the E is entourage. Oh, indeed. Oh, O, Ontarge. Why did that ever have to come up again in polite company? So nobody wins that one, so we revert back to John's going to go first on our last game that we're going to play after this break.
Starting point is 00:47:10 We'll be right back. And we are back. A dinosaur story. I forgot to say that after the last break, I think. Anyway, our determining game today is called The Little Search Engine That Could. So here's how this game works. I typed a word into the search engine on IMDB this morning,
Starting point is 00:47:47 a mere hour or two ago. And then I wrote down the top 10 movies that have this word in the title. You're going to take turns, much like that last game, guessing movies that have this word in them. If you name the number one movie, you get 10 points. If you name the number 10 movie, it's worth one point.
Starting point is 00:48:09 Any movie 11 through infinity is worth no points. And this is people typing into IMDB search engine. So it's sort of like you've got to put yourself in the mind frame of this is the most famous movies that have this word in the title but also recency bias happens a lot and so it's kind of tricky figuring it out but sometimes the hardest part is even thinking of enough movies that have that word in the title and the word that we're going to spell so we're going to flip the order around this time so it's going to go John James Nick around that way and the word we're going to
Starting point is 00:48:51 look for. Again, the theme of this year's Fantastic Fest is monsters, so the word is monster, singular, just the word monster. It's in at least 10 movies that I have written
Starting point is 00:49:10 down here before me. John, what is your first? You'll each get three guesses total, and then we'll add up the points and see who won. What is your guess? So you can't do plural. yes yes you can no you it can be plural it can be plural but I typed monster so you keep that in mind is that that's what I typed but but obviously
Starting point is 00:49:33 monster is contained in the word monsters so do with that what you will I'm going to say monsters ink see I thought that's where you were headed and it did make the list but is number 10 on the list I got a point. You are on the board, John Erler. John Erle is on the board. I love it. I'm still crossing things out from the guests that was going to be here.
Starting point is 00:50:06 I keep crossing the name out, so I don't fuck up and call any of you, Jordan. I've been called worse. It's fine. I mean, James Pound. What a powerful last name. Pound. How does that, how does that work out for you? I'm here.
Starting point is 00:50:26 Yeah, you made it here. It's your name that got you here. What's your first guess? I'm going to Price's Right this and say Monsters University. Oh, that's such a Price's Right move. And unfortunately, that did not make the top 10. That's how the day's going. You're out of the gate.
Starting point is 00:50:45 You're out of the gate with a goose egg, but you're still going to have two more guesses. It's still anybody's game at this point. But I will say, you know, Monsters Inc. it kind of feels like it's all right, right? But it's just like the first one was such a classic and then the second one, you know, it's like just them in another environment
Starting point is 00:51:03 or whatever. And so I just thought Monsters University would sort of be forgotten, but now they're building a whole section of Disneyland calling it Monsters University so they're really backing that movie. All right. Nick, you've had a little extra time to
Starting point is 00:51:21 think about this. What's your first? guess. Well, can I say Monster, the Halle Berry movie? You could say Monster, but here's the trick to saying Monster out loud like that is that then you have to
Starting point is 00:51:35 tell me, are you talking about Monster from 2013 or from 2020 2013? 2013 Monster is number one on the list. Nick's got 10 points, John.
Starting point is 00:51:51 Incredible. I knew he was going to do well. I was always rooting for him. If I can't win, either James or Nick I think could be good winners. Thank you. I appreciate it. If you can't win. I got to advocate for myself.
Starting point is 00:52:08 Oh, we got some folks just joining us. This is seemed very excited to check out the show. Hi, welcome. I don't know if you know what this is. I know you're waiting to go into, they've been doing interviews and stuff in the back rooms, the karaoke rooms here at the
Starting point is 00:52:23 highball, so welcome for however minutes you're going to be joining us. Let me just give them a quick recap of everything. This is Doug Love's movies. We're coming to you from... No, all right, here we go. Oh, you're in the back, so you're all caught up. But you're still waiting to go in there? Yeah, yeah, okay.
Starting point is 00:52:46 But I appreciate it. That's so nice. What are you from? AMFM. magazine? That sounds cool. And the Drew Pearson show. Drew Pearson? Hey Drew Pearson. Hey Drew Pearson. Rum is full of Drew Pearson fans. All right.
Starting point is 00:53:08 Of the Dallas Cowboys? He's got a show and you're not him. I'm not him. Incredible. Oh. Incredible. You said, when you said it, I thought you were saying you're Drew Pearson. No, I'm not. What's your name? Paul Salvin. Salvin. Salfin. Yeah, that's it. Okay. All right. He's asking, for the listeners, this audience member that just appeared and gave me various
Starting point is 00:53:37 names is now quizzing the crowd about Cowboys fans. Because that's Drew Pearson is a cowboy? Yeah! See, now you're getting them fired up. Now they're going to run home and check out that podcast. Check out Drew Pearson and Paul Sa-Sahag. John, what's your... next guess. I'm going to guess some
Starting point is 00:53:59 things. Just one. Just one movie that has the word monster within it. I'm drawing such a blank on monster movies, which is terrible in this situation. But I'm going to say... Oh, you know what? This is great that you're bringing this up because
Starting point is 00:54:15 I forgot to mention that each of my guests has a lifeline, which is the audience member that they're playing on behalf of. So John, at this point, you could see if Brits got a good answer. And then the other fellas on each of your remaining two turns, you can ask your
Starting point is 00:54:31 person. And if that person says something you don't think is on there, you can still go ahead and give your own answer. But John, do you want to go to Britt? Not yet. Okay, he's holding it off, Britt. You've got to, you're going to have it rough because a lot of the good ones will be gone by the time he does
Starting point is 00:54:47 use you. I say use a lifeline early. Brin, what do you think? Do you have any suggestion? Should I go to you now or should I wait? I don't think you should be able to ask that. Can he can Brit use his phone? Well he's sound
Starting point is 00:55:02 You know he's gonna be He's gonna be even worse on What? No, he can't use his phone But he's gonna be even worse On round three if he's if he now So just ask him Britt help me out
Starting point is 00:55:12 You got something That's what I was gonna say Give me something else Monster's ball That's the other one I was gonna say That's the one But he seemed to indicate You guys are like
Starting point is 00:55:26 ruining this game We just need one answer for John to accept or deny, then you... I'm going to go Monster 2023. Monster 2023 is number two on the list. We did it, Brad.
Starting point is 00:55:41 You and me. Because if someone times Monster, it's going to come up, those two are going to come up, and barely people are looking it up because there's a new version of it, a new film or limited series or something, where another famous actress is taking on the role
Starting point is 00:55:57 of that mark. I mean. Eileen. What was it? Warren. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So congratulations on picking up on that, John. That was worth nine more points for you.
Starting point is 00:56:10 But now we go to James and his second guess, or he can go to his lifeline for one answer. All, as long as she doesn't say Monsters Ball as well. Amanda. Amanda. Amanda. Monster Squad. Amanda says Monster Squad. I'm rolling with that.
Starting point is 00:56:33 Number seven on the list. On the board. Yeah, you are. Nobody's walking away with no points today. That's a nice feeling. I'm happy about it. You got four points for that. And Monster Squad, of course,
Starting point is 00:56:48 we watched that a couple years ago here at this festival. They should have booked it back again. It's that much fun to watch with the audience. audience. All right. Nick, you're tied for the lead, but some more points. More points wouldn't hurt. All right. Well, what do you have? Alice is going to say. Yeah, good to look. Allison says, Monsters. Monsters. Play it hit South by Southwest. Great movie. Yeah. Monsters. You're going with it? Yeah. I wouldn't. I didn't. I tried not to vocally encourage you to do that because that is that is not on the
Starting point is 00:57:29 list. That is not on the list. Sorry about that, but you're still tied for the lead. Yeah, but let's see what John has to say about that. I think it's great. I'm really, if I can't win and if James can't win, I'm so happy for Nick.
Starting point is 00:57:52 I really appreciate that. Thanks, man. You're welcome. Did somebody already guess Monsters Ball? It's been said. It's been said a few times. It's been, people keep saying it, they can't get Monsters Ball out of their mouths enough. It keeps happening.
Starting point is 00:58:10 But it hasn't been guessed yet. It's been set. It's been said out loud, but nobody is officially committed to it. Yes. Well, I'm starting to run dry, so I'm going to say Monster's Ball. Monsters Ball did not make the, did not make the top 10. Damn it. Unfortunately.
Starting point is 00:58:32 Jesus. Maybe that apostrophe screwed it all up in monsters. This is your final? I don't know. Your final guess. Let me do the math here. If you can get the number of five movie or four or three, then you will be tied or in the lead. Monster.
Starting point is 00:59:01 Monster house. Monster House is number four on the list. Oh my God. Amazing. So that is worth seven more points for James, which brings him to 11. Nick,
Starting point is 00:59:23 if you can name number nine, number eight, number six, number five, or number three, you will be the winner. Do you have another monster movie that you can share with us now? This is a stretch. Some kind of monster? Oh, let me just double check.
Starting point is 00:59:51 No, I'm sorry. It's a bad one I can think of. Some kind of monster is not on there. That means that James Pound is our winner today. He did it. Thank you, Amanda. Yeah. I'm sorry, Britt.
Starting point is 01:00:07 Amanda, we'll get the prize bag to you when it's over. We'll cruise down the catwalk and hand it off to you. But congratulations, James. As you know, the winner of the show, I used to do this and now it's back, gets to name anyone for me to call a shithead at the end of the show.
Starting point is 01:00:30 So could you lower your mic and just whisper something to me? Okay, that's a good one. Some people heard it. I think they'll like it when they hear it again later. Terrific work, James. Let's plug your thing again. When's your show? I've got a show here at the festival on the 22nd.
Starting point is 01:00:49 It's called Power Pints. It's a PowerPoint presentation and comedy show. People, it's sort of like drunken TED talks. People come up, do five minutes on random crazy shit that they're knowledgeable about or want to rant about or whatever. But, yeah, I've been producing that for a couple of years. And we also have a show right after the first. festival for the general public on the 26th here, the highball.
Starting point is 01:01:11 And next month, October 9th over at Radio East. And power pints. Dot show is the website for tickets and info on that. And I do highball trivia here at the, I do Geeks You Drink at the Highball trivia every Wednesday, unless there's a movie festival going on. Oh, there's no one this next one. Not one going on right now.
Starting point is 01:01:31 But there's like wonderful horror trivia that's at the fest. Oh, okay. I'm not involved. I'll do that instead. Yeah. Okay. But thank you. Give it up everybody for James Pound. Thank you so much, Doug. This is a pleasure.
Starting point is 01:01:42 Yeah, that was, I thought, I was going to tell you before the show started, but I thought it would be funnier to just drag him up here after he shows us. The flop sweat, really, it did hit. It was great. Well, I guess it might have been better that you didn't have a lot of time to think about it, that it just happened right away. It was good. All right, so we're going to do everybody else's plugs after I tell you, I can't believe no one in the audience is going to tell us the rest of the answers. I was in that.
Starting point is 01:02:11 Yeah, everybody is dying to know, but I like to get the first plugs in first so that the listeners stick around. All right. So Monsters Inc was number 10. Number nine is a movie from 2016 called Monster Trucks. I almost said that. Yeah. And Jane Levy, who's in one of the movies here at the festival this year. She's in that.
Starting point is 01:02:33 And then number eight is from 2024. Monster Summer. Yeah, I'm not terribly familiar with that one. And then number seven was Monster Squad. Number six, a monster calls. Oh, yeah. Remember that movie? Like, they just didn't answer the phone,
Starting point is 01:02:52 and then it was over. Like, don't call this monster. And then number five, Monster Hunter. Yeah, that was from 2020. And four was Monster House. And then three. Everyone collectively kick yourselves, if you didn't think of this one. Monster-in-law, starring J-Lo and the great Jane Fonda,
Starting point is 01:03:22 was number three. And then Monster Monster at the top. All right, John Earler. What would you like to promote? Thanks, Doug. We're going to be in Dallas next weekend, September 26th at the Draft House Cedars, doing a Arnold Schwarzenegger double feature, Total Recall and The Terminator.
Starting point is 01:03:41 Whoa. Amazing. A Swartzathon? A mini-Schwarzathon. Who are you saying as a mini-s-Swartz? Not you, Doug. What else? We're doing the Lost Boys.
Starting point is 01:04:00 We haven't done The Lost Boys in a long time. Oh, fine. Classic one. We're doing that at the State Theater here in Austin. on October 15th. We just saw Lost Boys the Musical on Broadway. How was it?
Starting point is 01:04:11 I loved it. It's really, really good. What's your favorite man in that? Oh, did they have sweaty sax man? Yes. Hell yeah. And everybody, as the character says stuff, like, who is that guy?
Starting point is 01:04:23 Why is he so sweaty? It's funny. It's funny. But it's not comedic for the most part. It's pretty intense. They have good effects. And the music is all kind of rock style. Love it.
Starting point is 01:04:33 Yeah, it's fun. Love it. Maybe we'll do that for our, show at the state on October 15th. Okay, what else? Tickets available now. Starting first weekend of October, we're going to do another one from the vaults. We're going to do karate kid, the first
Starting point is 01:04:45 karate kid at the Alamo Draft House here in Austin. We're going to do three shows of that. And we're just going to do shows every weekend here in Austin at the Alamo Draft House. Yeah, so how do people find you for more info? They go to the Alamo Draft House website to buy tickets. You don't have like a master pancake,
Starting point is 01:05:03 whatever? We need a website. We need a website. We've got all the social media, whatever you're on, we're there. Okay. Oh, and we're on Twitch every week. Yes. That's what I was trying to get. You're so good. Thank you for coaxing that out of me.
Starting point is 01:05:17 I would never have to be in Texas to see something. You can do it on Twitch. That's a great point. You don't have to be here in Texas. Anybody listening out there every Wednesday and Thursday we're on Twitch. Wednesdays we're on at 7 p.m. doing a movie. And Thursdays we're on at 9 p.m. Central doing. an episode of a TV show.

Starting point is 01:05:51 adding to what I think, I should do a game sometime about, you know, call it what the fuck or something, where all the answers are movies that have a question mark in the title, because that's a genre into itself. Because they also tend to be darker or horror movies. But there's a question mark.
Starting point is 01:06:10 There's other one. Whose Harry Crumb was just as comedy. But anyway, what happened to Doris? What happened to Doris? We are world premiering on Sunday at 520, I believe. And then again, we're playing again on Wednesday night late. So it's starring Heather Graham, Mimi Rogers. It's a true story of Doris Byther.
Starting point is 01:06:30 And it's a not very funny story, I guess. It's a horror movie Yeah, it's more on the scary side There's a silly scary There is humor in it Because it's ultimately about a family So there's this woman who's trying to raise three kids And so there's some funny beats to it
Starting point is 01:06:49 Yeah It's a 1974 period piece So everybody's smoking cigarettes and you know Oh those were the days It was great Yeah Well thank you so much for being here And everybody look for that movie
Starting point is 01:07:03 Look for that movie also down the road. Thank you. I'm not sure where it'll show up, but it'll be worth a look. I'm doing stand-up at the West River Comedy Club in Rapid City, South Dakota, October 16th, and 17th, and at the Comedy Fort in Fort Collins, Colorado on October 30 and 31st, all of my dates and deeds and links. All right, Doug Lovesmovies.com. And one more time for my guests. Nick Siamet, James Pound, and John Earler.
Starting point is 01:07:41 And I always have to thank Fantastic Fest. I love this festival and getting to do this show here every year for, I don't know how many years now. We even did one in, like, the COVID year, I think we just, we didn't work you on it. We just three of us came in here, four of us came in here and just did it in an empty room. But it still sounded like the high ball sounds, which was nice. And so I'm excited that this is only days. two of this year's Fantastic Fest and I will see you all out there
Starting point is 01:08:11 all week long and as always Ken Paxton is his shithead watch a thudderly there's no room
