Starting point is 00:00:00 Doug hates candy wrappers screaming baby sticky seeds with 50 acid pop or kernels in his teeth. There's still not one that he won't see because Doug loves movies. Hey, hey, hey, everybody. My name is Doug and I love scary movies. Yeah, this is Doug loves movies recording on Sunday afternoon, October 19th, 2020. My guests today are Kinesse Mobley, Ryan Nemeth, and Dan Peralt. Hello. Hi. Hello. I'd like to meet to each of you, speak to each of you individually, alphabetically by first name.
Starting point is 00:00:50 He co-starred in one of my favorite recent TV shows called The Residence. It's Dan Peralt. Hey, dude. Hey, Doug. Good to talk to you again. It's great to have you back. I'm not sure, to the extent at which I reached out to you when I watched the residents. Like, I might have liked some of your posts about it or something.
Starting point is 00:01:16 But I'm a huge fan of the show. Thank you. Sad that we will not be seeing a second season. Yeah. I mean, I just loved those people, the showrunner, everyone at Shondaland, I would love for there to be more, but I got to say it was probably the thrill. It was the production experience that was the thrill of my life,
Starting point is 00:01:40 to every day show up to the most accurate White House ever depicted on film. It was like to the inch of replica scale of the White House, and it just felt like such a cool place to call home for a bit. I think you did reach out to me during it, And I will say that you like some posts. And when I see a Doug Benson like on one of my posts, it brings a little joy to my heart. So I was very happy to see those.
Starting point is 00:02:06 Well, that's good. That's what I'm there for is to bring the joy. And, you know, the silver lining that I would pull from the situation is that that first season was perfect and kind of this story doesn't need to go on. I mean, that's what I'm curious about is if there was a season two, what do you think would have happened? Just another murder at the White House? I believe it would have been in a different location
Starting point is 00:02:33 following Uzo Aduba's character, Detective Cup, in a new, some sort of new setting. I would have gotten, and these are all pure guesses because I had nothing to do with the writing of that show. Yeah. I think Randall Park's character would have followed her to wherever she goes next. We definitely brainstorm some stuff as a cast.
Starting point is 00:02:53 Like, would this be, I mean, I think we'd take, the white lotus approach and you just go to some cool new environment each season uh with with maybe two overlapping characters per each one yeah like uh the knives out movies yeah exactly yeah uh that would have been cool because it's i i hope there's some way for her to resurrect uh uzo to you know resurrect that character or someone uh similar because just her being you know fast talking and solving crimes is just beautiful i would love for her to meet benoit blanc i would love for the mashup movie that'd be amazing maybe throw a little matlock in there who knows poker face um but uh thank you for doing this i know you have i i just saw headlines about some new project that you're involved in
Starting point is 00:03:47 can you talk about that definitely yeah this week we just uh it was just announced the uh the cast of a movie called Fight for 84 was released. I'm lucky to be a part of that. This is a true story about the 1984 U.S. boxing team that had 11 months to form a new team after the intended team to go to the Olympics tragically died in a plane crash. It stars Jamie Fox as our head coach as he's put in together this team of boxers, many of whom would go on to do great, great things. so many names that everyone would know about Mike Tyson and Evander Hollifield, younger versions of them are in this movie, and I play a sort of boxing savant, I guess, who Jamie's character wants to keep around because of my knowledge of boxing.
Starting point is 00:04:33 I will say between the residents where I played a Secret Service agent and between this movie where I play a boxing coach, I don't know what casting directors are seeing me in physically to think I could do either of those things. But I'm grateful that they've given me the chance. Well, it's certainly fun versions of those things. You know, you're a fun Secret Service agent who was fixated on Hugh Jackman. Yep. And Kylie Minot.
Starting point is 00:05:04 Yeah. Who was the best. And I was reminded about that by our next guest. We were chatting pre-show. She's always someone that I say yes to, which she has. something to promote is Keneas Mobley. Hey, Keney. Hi. And yes, I watched the residents yesterday. And so when they said that you were the other test, I was like, oh, my gosh. Oh, that's so great. Thank you for watching. That's the great thing about it, is that, like, anybody can still just watch it.
Starting point is 00:05:36 Like, anybody listening right now, I know we're here to talk about movies, but anybody could just, you know, binge the entire season. I mean, I know it all came out at the same time initially, but, you know, as long as it's still there, that's a, you know, these days in streaming, that's a big win as if people can still check it out. Oh, I've seen it many times. If you are a quirky, dorky black woman, you relate to your gorgelia cups so deeply. And I have been told that I need to dress up as her for Halloween. So I was just like, this is the thing that needs to be on as I do to work around my house. Oh, that's great.
Starting point is 00:06:14 It was a rewatch. I had no idea. you just finally gotten around to it. And what is your new thing you'd like to talk about? Okay. Thank you so much for having me on. So as part of the New York Comedy Festival, I am doing, this is truly a dream of mine. It is also my 40th birthday party.
Starting point is 00:06:38 It is the hot guy draft. It's the 10th annual Hot Guy Draft as part of the New York Comedy Festival, where some comedians who have been on this show before, I think Josh Gondelman has been here before. And Zach Zimmerman, Joyal Nicole Johnson, Pugherty, Jay Jurdon, and James Hamilton will all be creating teams of the hottest guys, celebrities, no one we know. And the audience gets to vote to see who the winner is. It's a very dumb thing, but I'm so happy about it. That sounds awesome.
Starting point is 00:07:12 And what's the date of it again? It is November 16th at 3 p.m. which I specifically requested. I was like, okay, I know my audience is millennial and some older and they need to be able to get dinner afterwards and be in bed at a reasonable time. So it's at 3 p.m. I love that. I mean, I've been a, you know, a pioneer in the area of matinees, like daytime comedy because I years ago started doing, you know, shows at 420. the afternoon and you're like great and i love it i absolutely love you know being off work for the night at you know six o'clock that's when you can get you get some serious party on if you don't have to do shows yes but thank you for joining us again today and i have bad news for Dan Ancones because we have a returning champ today who bested the best at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, including his own girlfriend.
Starting point is 00:08:19 It's Ryan Nemes. Hey, Ryan. Hey, Doug, what's going on? You know, I rub it into her every time this comes up, I say, remember when I won that and you did it win that? It's so funny. I can't believe it. You know, honestly, I got lucky.
Starting point is 00:08:35 I think I got lucky. I had some good answers, but there's a lucky category in there. Yeah, well, that is, you know, part of the makeup of the show now is, you know, it's kind of got more of a anyone can win quality to it because, you know, we're not here to embarrass anybody and I want to get, you know, cool guests on. Like I love having my comedian friends on, but I also want, you know, others to be welcome and not feel, I mean, they still, let's face it, you're still going to feel dumb today at some point.
Starting point is 00:09:05 It's inevitable. Because how can you know all the, how can anybody know all this shit? I mean, I'm, I'm looking it up and writing it down. It's not like I come up with all these trivia questions, you know, just from my own brilliant mind, memory, rather. It is my mind. You're killing the illusion for me. I thought, I thought that's what it was.
Starting point is 00:09:28 Well, you know, the answers I have to look up. I still have to think of the questions. Yeah. So, you know, I do, I do half of them. the work but I let AI do the rest so congratulations on your big win
Starting point is 00:09:44 because that was a special episode for anybody who didn't hear it we had what was there nine people competing something like that yeah it's a big gauntlet match yeah and you took it all down and I should I just want to know
Starting point is 00:09:59 I saw like on your you know bio writer wrestler, actor, comedian. And my question, too, is, is there anything you don't do? Man, you know, I previously would have said a movie trivia podcast, but that day, that really changed everything for me.
Starting point is 00:10:20 You know what was funny about doing the gauntlet show is that the next, I was trying to, you know, get in promos for our big wrestling show during your show, and my next match was a gauntlet match in Lowell, Massachusetts. We set the record for the biggest attendance, DNA's ever had in North America. And I thought, man, I was just in a movie trivia gauntlet match. This is kind of fun. This is what I do now.
Starting point is 00:10:43 Right. Well, it's certainly nobody tried to, you know, force you to the ground or anything during the trivia. The trivia heard a lot less. That's true. It's easier, but also, you know, it might have stung more if you lost, you know. Yeah, yeah. You know, I'm used to losing in wrestling, but if I would have lost in the debut at Douglas
Starting point is 00:11:03 movies, I would have just felt horrible. I don't know how I would have shown my face in Austin anywhere. Well, good luck today. Thank you. Good luck to everybody. And the most important thing to remember is Bill Murray said in meatballs, it just doesn't matter. Before we play some scary games today, I would like each one of you to recommend one scary movie.
Starting point is 00:11:30 We'll start with you, Dan. Did you think of one? yeah i did think of i thought of a franchise and i don't know if it's allowed to just say the franchise but well you can tell us what your favorite one installment is but like if it's a good franchise they should probably go back to the beginning even if that's not the best movie and this is one of the unique situations where you could start with any one of these movies and that's because it's vhs um the it's an annual installment it seems it seems like they come out i think they come out with one every year where it's a collection of for anyone who hasn't seen it basically six or
Starting point is 00:12:08 seven short films most have some kind of found footage element to it um it is some of them i think one from last year maybe was two years ago was all like 80s found footage kind of stuff to it uh so it's got like found footage black mirror kind of vibe yeah and it's kind of themed each time Like the new one should be out any day now, I think they played it at Fantastic Fest is just Halloween-themed, I think. Yeah. Did you see it, Ryan? Did you see it at Fantastic Fest?
Starting point is 00:12:44 No, I was. I was only there half the week, and that was one of the ones I missed, but I will catch up. I love VHS. We just watched the re-watched the original one. I love VHS. So which one is your favorite so far, Dan? Do you have a favorite? I think it's the 80s one.
Starting point is 00:12:59 Let me make sure. that i'm naming that correctly yeah it's probably vhs colon something vhs 94 so maybe it's 90s but i remember watching that one and loving the hell out of it i i i've i've seen probably three or four of them there's probably one or two i got to catch up including the new one but the crew the directing producing crew radio silence who have done some other fantastic stuff in horror and otherwise they they did that series and i used to be such a huge fan of paranormal activity And I think those kind of fell off after a while. And then this feels like a spiritual successor to that great horror found footage franchise.
Starting point is 00:13:38 That, yeah, I just love it every year. Weird question, Dan. Do you think it's possible for there's a stage adaptation of paranormal activity that's going to be opening soon at the Amundsen in Los Angeles? Okay. Does that sound like anytime I've seen a play. that's supposed to be scary I'm rarely you know there's been a few exceptions but for the most part it's like hard to be scary in a play I really want to be scared in a play it sounds like it sounds like something that would be great to be scared in a play I don't I can't think of one where I have been
Starting point is 00:14:17 scared first of all I would see that by the way I mean I will I will if I'm in LA while that's still playing I will absolutely see paranormal activity live but also how do you do it it's a found footage uh franchise yeah you're just stripping with the audience maybe we're the camera and we're seeing into a room and then you know a stage hand pulls a string and a chair flies across the stage all right yeah that kind of you know they'll probably even do the effect maybe where somebody like their body goes up the wall and is on the ceiling you know who knows what crazy they've got to come up with some crazy shit because people would be pissed with theater prices these days if it didn't really deliver on at least a couple of good jump scares.
Starting point is 00:15:05 I like, did you briefly say that everyone has their own camera? Because I feel like cutting to different cameras in the audience, you give everyone a camera, and now we're at the viewpoint of Section A seat three, and we're seeing their nightmare. I don't know. I think that's a nugget of an idea that could work right now. No, I love that idea, but I just meant more like we represent the camera
Starting point is 00:15:27 because we're watching. Oh, that took it very bad. Yeah. But who knows? I think they probably might incorporate video elements and, you know. And also, story-wise, I guess they can pick from the entire franchise at this point. So they could pick, like, some of the coolest things that have happened. But we're not here to talk about plays. Keneas, what would you like to recommend? What's a scary movie you like? Because weapons came out this year and everyone was on that, I'm very much so like, well, if you liked weapons, you've got to watch Barbarian. It made me rethink staying at Airbnb's. And it made me say, oh, wow, is Bill Scarsgard hot? Because I seen him in It, and I was like, I don't know if he's hot. But then I saw him in Barbarian.
Starting point is 00:16:18 I was like, I think Bill Scarsguard is hot. he's very tall, I'll tell you that. He's got eyes that could go either way, like sketchy or good intent, and it's perfect. Absolutely. That's, you know, that's part of the tightrope and barbarian and some of his other roles, I think, is that he's, you know, you don't know which way he's going to go. This movie is people just bring it up all the time. Like, they'll bring it up all year as something to recommend. But then especially, how long ago to come out, it's probably been two or three years at this point.
Starting point is 00:16:56 Yeah. Every October, when I ask for scary movie wrecks, people bring a barbarian. It really works for people. Did you see Companion? I love Companion. Okay, good, good. That to me was in the same kind of ballpark. Yes.
Starting point is 00:17:20 came out in January this year and it comes up in conversation for time to time too but I don't think it gets as much credit as it deserves but I'm super excited that the guy behind barbarian and weapons is now basically they're going to just hand him a blank check
Starting point is 00:17:36 and you know who knows what kind of craziness he's going to come up with 100% and that he used to was he in white as guys you know he was like yeah he's a sketch group guy yeah you know so like he comes from comedy
Starting point is 00:17:52 and then makes these fucked up scary ass movies that have like weird you know weird kind of comedic elements in them putting like old women be or like women who were like old or like changed in some way being very scary what did a woman hurt you like why is that the case
Starting point is 00:18:16 but you said he's gonna get a blank check and he was on the podcast Blank Check, and it was great. Oh, Crager. Oh, Zach Krieger. There's, like, serious Oscar buzz for Amy Madigan is the crazy old lady. She deserves it. Well, I haven't seen everything, so I can't say that. But I think she's awarded for doing something.
Starting point is 00:18:39 Well, yeah. I mean, maybe also a nomination for makeup. Yeah. Or the, you know, the horrible application thereof. All right, Ryan, we got a couple of good ones so far. What would you like to recommend? Oh, I love both of those choices. Like I said, I just rewatch VHS, and I felt legit scared watching a few of the first one.
Starting point is 00:19:02 And Barbarian, I love Barbarian. Okay, so I would have to be, you know, I'm doing my duty here, and it's for real. I highly recommend Black Phone, too, because, you know, Anna's in the movie, and I loved it. I love the first one. I think this is a huge, awesome, perfect way to make it. a sequel for it. Did you catch it at Fantastic Fest or elsewhere? I did. I did catch it and it's, you know, the thing that I was found fascinating about it
Starting point is 00:19:30 is that, you know, the phone booths is out in the middle of fucking, you know, bleak, cold, snowy place. And I'm like, oh, you know, a soundstage where they had a green screen and, you know, blah, blah, blah. And, you know, because Anna's been posting about it, like, I know that it's like they just were really, out in the fucking cold making this movie yeah they uh she would she would tell me she's like i think they think i don't know how to drive in the snow because they keep telling me i'm not allowed to leave for the weekend there's going to be a blizzard and i'm like oh they just think i'm
Starting point is 00:20:01 some you know west coast baby and then she's like okay there is a giant blizzard i'm like you know there really there really was pretty serious wintry conditions there and i think that movie it comes across to the movie so well it kind of gives you a feeling of like the shining you feel like uh you know alone freezing cold it's got a feeling of nightmare on elm street i loved it i think if you if you like the freddy kruger movies if you like the first black phone movie if you like ethan hawk i mean this is an amazing movie go see black phone too and it's uh doing quite well this weekend opening weekend yeah and um just i can't i can't like if i'm going to be if some crazy guy in a mask is going to show up wanting to kill me i don't also want to be
Starting point is 00:20:48 cold at the same time like that is that is really that is true terror and it's funny you mentioned the signing because it's similar the way uh they go outside and freeze to death um yeah yeah all right well those are three uh three great recommendations uh that are uh probably available in various formats and black phone two uh is in theaters now support Ryan's girlfriend. And, you know, because they're going to Fantastic Fest over the years, I've, you know, pretty friendly with the guys who wrote and directed it. And, yeah, it's a, they're good dudes.
Starting point is 00:21:28 And it's a good time, if you like to have a bad time. We will be right back after you hear about these goods and service recommendations. Starting point is 00:22:15 I hope you've purchased those goods and services because that that really helps out especially when you use the code DLM and I was babbling a lot about in the first third of the show about Fantastic Fest because I love
Starting point is 00:22:31 it so much and it just happened you know last month it's in towards the end of September every year in Austin, Texas and Ryan participated in a game there that I called That's Fantastic
Starting point is 00:22:45 because we were at Fantastic Fest but I'm going to keep that name and we're going to play that game again today but it won't be a single elimination
Starting point is 00:22:56 like it was in Austin that was crazy if you miss you don't get kicked out you get to stay on the call I will name a movie
Starting point is 00:23:06 with a silly crazy title and then I'll say the names of two actors then you have to tell me if it's one of the actors or the other actor or neither that is in that film.
Starting point is 00:23:24 First to two correct answers wins. Dan is up first. And if Dan misses, he doesn't get a point and we just move on to the next round with Kinesse and et cetera. Ready, Dan?
Starting point is 00:23:41 I'm ready. Okay. Brace yourself. The movie is called The Man Who Re claimed His Head. Does that movie feature Basil Rathbone,
Starting point is 00:23:58 Claude Rains, or neither? Maisel Rathbone, Claude Rains. I just, I don't know either of those names, so I'm just going to have to go with the cooler sounding one, which is let's go with Rathbone on that. Yeah, I never know whether it's, whether it's pronounced, you know, Basil or Basel or Razzle or dazzle, but the Razzle part, I'm pretty clear on. I know it's not, I know it's not Rathbone. And Claude Rains, so Rathbone was, I think, best known for being Sherlock Holmes in movies.
Starting point is 00:24:48 And Claude Rains is the guy at the end of, that Casabaca, Rick, ends up with, you know, his police captain friend. And he's played by Claude Rains. And it is Claude Rains, who is featured in the man who reclaimed his head. So no point there for Dan. But it was a great effort, Dan. I gave you three options. I learned something from it. I learned something.
Starting point is 00:25:15 You learned too much, in my opinion. Are you ready? I am. All right, here we go. The movie is called Fertilize the Blastreaming Bombshell. Oh, okay. Yeah. Did that movie feature actress Bo Derek, the actor,
Starting point is 00:25:36 Bo Hopkins or neither Wow Fertilize the blaspheming bombshell and you can talk us through your logic on what you choose Bo Derek is
Starting point is 00:25:52 a notorious bombshell and so if someone wanted to make a movie about her getting fertilized and we mean fertilized like sexually we don't mean fertilize like chop her up and like she's feeding a field of grass or something, right?
Starting point is 00:26:09 Yeah, I don't know anything other than the words in the title as far as, you know, what happens in that movie. Oh, okay. I'm going to go with Bo Derek simply because I've heard of her before. I love that logic. It makes perfect sense, but I only picked her because I wanted to have another Bo. And is Bo Hopkins was kind of a lead actor and a lot of, like, he started off. pretty hot and then I know got relegated to
Starting point is 00:26:38 to be movies and so I assume that that would be the case with this one. Ryan? Yes, sir. It's your turn. The movie is called zombie stripper. Does it have Robert England, Jackie Earl Haley, or
Starting point is 00:26:59 neither? Oh, this is so good. Zombie. This is one of the movies that would be in my family's group chat and they would all know about it and send me the poster and put my face on it as a joke let's say Robert England you know
Starting point is 00:27:17 you really worked it out you told us what you were thinking and it is in fact Robert England is in Rob Zombie Zip stripper see this is what happened the last time you played this game in Austin you're just
Starting point is 00:27:33 you know uh savant this is so wild yeah and of course i picked those two i you know i picked jackie or hilly is the other option because he of course also has played freddie kruger so tricky so i thought i would trick you but did not work dan get in the game this is your chance to get in the game let's do it you might remember this movie i don't know it's called 13 ghosts but it's spelled with a they managed to put a one and a three in the word 13 it doesn't you look at it doesn't make any sense uh but who was in that movie tony shalube stanley tucci or neither hmm okay i feel like i don't remember the movie as well as i do the poster because i can
Starting point is 00:28:24 see those numbers in the in the name um i'd love to my But I don't want to just pick the answer for the thing that I wish exists. So I'm going to go with neither. You know, I love when somebody talks themselves out of the correct answer. Because it's Tony Shaloo. Oh, my God. And now I've got to see that movie. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:57 I'm sure he gives an interesting performance. You know, I don't remember liking the movie, but also now I'm, like, so into Tony Shalub that, you know. Was that an early Shaloo? I think so. I think it's pretty early Shalub. You know, it's called 13 Ghosts because it was made in 1913. All right, Denise. Okay.
Starting point is 00:29:25 Here's your chance to get on the board. The movie, which you may or may not have ever heard of. probably haven't heard of, is called all S's. Oh, okay. Capital S, S, S, S, S, S, S, S, S. All right.
Starting point is 00:29:42 Yeah. Did that movie feature Dirk Benedict, Richard Hatch, or neither? Richard Hatch, I've heard of. We've shown that that's not a good reason to pick something. Right.
Starting point is 00:30:00 I don't remember if he's an actor or a billionaire that did something. And wait, what was the first guy? Are you thinking of Richard Branson? Maybe. I'm thinking white guy floppy hair. Does Richard Hatch have floppy hair? I don't.
Starting point is 00:30:20 He might have been a little shaggy. I don't know. Okay. Wait. He's definitely before your time, as are a lot of these people. but that's who you're going with is Richard Hatch. Well, who is the first one again? Sorry. Dirk Benedict.
Starting point is 00:30:35 That's a fun name. It is. Richard Hatch or neither. And that's a real name. That's like... Yeah, I'm not making up no names. I might be making up, you know, who is possibly in this movie.
Starting point is 00:30:49 Yeah. But I'm not... These are real names. Because I like the name. You're going, Dirk? Yes. Well, that's... Correct.
Starting point is 00:31:00 Oh, yes. Okay. Dirk Benedict, who like, you know, some listeners might recognize the joke here because Dirk Benedict and Richard Hatch were both in the original television series, a version of Battlestar Galactica. Ah. Yeah, they were the two. They got quite famous from that as, like, kind of like, heart throbs who, like, shoot laser guns. So Kinesis is on the board, but Ryan has a chance for the win right now.
Starting point is 00:31:34 Oh, my God. We just did a movie with all S's in the title. Now, here's one with more than three R's. It's RRRRR, R, R, R, R, R, R, Xclamation Point. Oh, man. Okay. Does that movie star Alan Deloine, Gerard Depad, Diffa, or neither.
Starting point is 00:31:58 Oh, wow. Alan Depe de Perdue or neither. You know, I have never chosen neither. And I don't know if that's a good reason to choose neither. I wonder if that's like a struggling noise, like someone's trying to open something or they're getting choked or they're a pirate. Man, I just don't know this film. Let's say neither.
Starting point is 00:32:23 Let's just say neither. well you know there hasn't been a single one where the answer is neither so far oh no you know and we're like six deep at this point and uh that's going to continue because damn it gerard de padu starting our bummer i wish i got the shalub question i knew the shalub one all right okay back to dan this one i can't i can't i You know, this is really kind of funny coincidence that I had written this down because I didn't know what movies people were going to recommend. The movie is called A Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell. Sounds like the best movie ever, all right?
Starting point is 00:33:14 A Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hill. Did that movie feature Mark Singer, Kevin Sorbo, or Neer? neither never heard of this would love to see the poster and the the vhs or DVD cover um man i'm clueless again i'm going to see if the neither streak ends here and i'm going to go with neither is the correct answer neither had to happen at some point it had to happen and I had to mention Mark Singer and Kevin Sorbo because I often mix them up because one of them is Beast Master
Starting point is 00:33:57 and the other one is Hercules in you know TV shows or Beast Master is a movie and Hercules was a TV show okay congratulations everybody we've got a three-way tie but as luck would have it
Starting point is 00:34:13 Kinesse is up next and if she gets this right she wins the game And in this case, if she misses, Ryan will get a chance to steal. And if Ryan misses, then Dan is the winner. It'll be obvious which answer is still left. Here we go, Kniece.
Starting point is 00:34:34 The movie's called Killer Tomatoes Eat France. Okay. Or France, if you prefer. And also another great exclamation point in the title. It always delights me when people have the new. to do that. Did Killer Tomatoes Eat France feature
Starting point is 00:34:55 Dustin Screech Diamond, Mark, Skippy Price, or neither? Well, neither just did something and both hasn't done anything yet, has it? We don't, both hasn't been an option at any point. Oh, both was never an option. I was just doing that up entirely.
Starting point is 00:35:15 Okay. Yeah. Okay, so it was Screech, And who was the other person? Mark Skippy Price. He got the nickname Skippy because of his role on family ties with Michael J. Fox. He was the, you know, wacky neighbor kid. Right.
Starting point is 00:35:38 So it's a Screech or Skippy or Neither. Okay. Interesting. I know Screech as a character. Did he meet some terrible end? Is he still out there? He's no longer with us. Yes. Breach is gone.
Starting point is 00:35:55 Are I, you get it. Yeah. It's been a minute. It's been a few years, I think. Oh, okay. Well, I don't have to be sad right now. People are okay, yeah. Yeah, people have recovered.
Starting point is 00:36:05 Lark Vorhees is still alive. That's all that matters. Oh, okay. Well, to commemorate the dead, let's go with Screech. Incorrect. Bang it. Well, then we're not commemorating him at all. Okay.
Starting point is 00:36:19 Ryan? I got to go with Skippy. Skippy is the correct answer, you savage. Oh, my God. Ryan wins that game. People who listen to the show know that that doesn't mean much of anything. It just means that Ryan gets to go first in our next game that we will play after this break. We'll be right back.
Starting point is 00:36:43 We're back, and Ryan is, I can't see him, but I know he's smiling. because he took down that first game and he gets to go first in our next game. Last week we played a game on this show that was called Swap Meat, M-E-A-T, and this week we are playing a game called Fresh Meat. Rotten Tomatoes published a list of the best-reviewed horror films in the history of film.
Starting point is 00:37:22 You, the three of you, will take turns guessing movies that you think would land in the top 10 best-reviewed horror films. We'll start with Ryan. He'll guess a movie. Then we'll go to Kniez. So guess the movie. And Dan, he'll take a guess.
Starting point is 00:37:40 And we repeat that three. You get three guesses total. Whoever has the most points, After I added all up, is our winner today and goes on to be called champion for, it probably lasts for days. How long do people call you champ after your win, Ryan? It's ongoing. Yeah. See, he's not even, he's sitting here like he's not going to give up the belt.
Starting point is 00:38:10 That's right. Yeah, he's not going to relinquish the champion position. So pressure's on Kinesh and Dan You know if you get the number one movie on the list That's worth ten points And number ten movies worth one point And then all the you know
Starting point is 00:38:27 Points that would go In between and this is tough This is a I'm just going to admit to you now When I look at the list of ten movies It's what critics think are great horror movies So it's quite esoteric I even thought about calling this game as so terrifying.
Starting point is 00:38:50 Brian, you're up. I'm going to say Sinister for my first one. There's no reason why Sinister wouldn't be on the list. Is it one of your favorites? I know that it's historically listed as one of the scariest movies by some publication. It is one of my favorites. Yeah, I love it. And it's kind of fresh in my mind.
Starting point is 00:39:12 So I was thinking maybe, just maybe it would be a little over. overlap on this list? You know, there's certainly no reason why, like, I'm sure you'll all mention movies that absolutely deserve to be on the list, but this is like the absolute top 10 and Sinister did not crack that. Dang it. I would love it if we had, if every guest today wasn't in the top 10, like if you, you know, didn't name any of these would be wild.
Starting point is 00:39:44 but I do think it's possible I guess I was writing all this down I was like oh this this game's too hard this is ridiculous what's your first guest Keneas get out as is my show
Starting point is 00:40:01 I'm going to stay until the end but I mean I just walk around saying that I think it's one of the most perfect movies horror or any genre it's just so
Starting point is 00:40:15 I love the way the whole thing comes together and sticks the landing and all of that and it is number four on the list. Yeah! That's where it's seven points for Kniece. This is already way out ahead of the pack.
Starting point is 00:40:34 I don't know if anybody can name one of the top three, but as long as you can knock off a couple on the list, you still could catch up to Canis. Dan, what's your first guess? Well, I'm going to preface it by saying my understanding of these Rotten Tomatoes lists is that when they do these top lists, it also takes into consideration how many reviews
Starting point is 00:40:59 they got, I think. So like you couldn't have like an indie that got nine reviews that hit 100 that wouldn't be considered the top of all time. So I'm trying to think of ones that would still amass a ton of reviews. I am going to I'm going to go for my first guess with It Follows. That's another great example of a very well-received movie that, you know, could be just outside of the top 10 or 20. You know, like there's just been so many, so many great horror movies. And so I'm saying all of this to say that you, that is not on the list. Very graceful.
Starting point is 00:41:42 I'm trying to let you down gently. because, you know, these are good guesses. You know, like, there's no such thing as a bad guess here. I mean, well, I take it back. Like, one could say, like, most of the Friday to 13th movies were not, you know, received well by critics. But even the lamest franchise will have an installment where the critics go, oh, that one was, you know. I like that one. Ryan, what's your second guess?
Starting point is 00:42:11 Doug, would you humor me and just remind me. the exact wording of the name of this category, please? What do you mean? The name of the game? No, no, like the list. Is it the certified fresh top 10 scary movies? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, okay, okay.
Starting point is 00:42:31 I'm going to take a shot at the Blair Wish Project. Another terrific guess. And that's another thing about this game that we're doing right now is reminding people of some of these classic horror movies was there ever a good sequel to Blair Witch I don't want to speak ill
Starting point is 00:42:54 of anything you know the first one was just so iconic I'll say that yeah yeah exactly it's hard to top hard to match the I mean it's true of paranormal activity too it's just that after that first one it's kind of hard to you know come up with something that is
Starting point is 00:43:10 going to be as you know special because we've already been through it once, you know, so they kind of have to repeat themselves, unfortunately. Canis, you've had a second to think this over. Yes. You could widen your lead here. I'm going to go with the classic Psycho. I mean, come on.
Starting point is 00:43:32 Psycho's got to be on the list, right? Yeah, it is at number 14. Oh. Yeah, I was right there. It was right in the area. And that might have a little bit to do with. It might have ranked in 14 because of what Dan was speaking of because there weren't as many critics when Psycho came out. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:43:55 But good guess. Thank you. Dan. Well, now that I was going to go a similar direction as Kniez because who can who can, how can you go wrong with Hitchcock? but it's the number of reviews and then also some of those movies I don't know whether they be classified more as thrillers and horror.
Starting point is 00:44:17 So the one I was going to say, I don't know if it would be even on the list. I was going to say the birds but I think I think I'm not going to say that. I think I'm going to go with the original Halloween. OG Halloween
Starting point is 00:44:35 is 17 on the list. Yeah, but that was a good, good try. Thank you. But you're too old to be trick-or-treating, so step away from my house. Okay. Ryan, you have to name, to win today, you have to name one of the top three best-reviewed horror films. What's your guess? Train to Busan.
Starting point is 00:45:16 Hmm? The train to Busan. Amazing movie. Really good. I'm glad you brought it up because I recommend that movie whenever I get the chance. It's a terrific, exciting zombie movie that didn't make it on the list. Oh, man. we might have to go into
Starting point is 00:45:41 well no actually I take it back Cadiz is on the board so we just need more right answers um what's your next guess Kinesse silence of the lambs
Starting point is 00:46:02 oh wow see that falls right into what Dan was talking about where like you know you got to ask yourself you know is Silence of the Lamb's a horror movie come on
Starting point is 00:46:22 it is not on the list but I think people like to argue about that one I think it is a horror movie you know just because horrible things happen in it and it's you know and there's some suspense as well you know it's got
Starting point is 00:46:39 kind of their version of some jump scares in there but canese you're still in the lead so don't don't fret now it comes down to a very exciting finish with dan having one more answer to give okay uh because of this recurring issue of is it a horror movie or is it not i am once again I'm not going to go with my choice here, which... I'd like to hear your alternate guess. Jaws is your... Jaws. Jaws is my ultimate guess. Jaws is what I'm not saying.
Starting point is 00:47:17 I believe it to be a horror movie, but I'm not going to go with it because I don't know if Tomatoes would have categorized it is that. I'm going to go with an unquestionably... An unquestionable horror movie. It is undeniable that it is in that genre, and I'm going to go with The Exorcist. I mean, that's got to be a horror movie, right?
Starting point is 00:47:38 And did some of the critics, like, were some of them, like, oh, that was just gross, or it's too blasphemous, or, you know, like, I assume that it just got all glowing reviews when The Exorcists came out. But, again, it's another classic, obvious horror movie that is not on the list. And what it is on the list is going to make you, you're going to have a lot of reasons to complain. But unfortunately, you know, you'll have to wait until tomorrow morning because the office isn't open.
Starting point is 00:48:15 But definitely reach out when you hear the results of this list. But congratulations to Kinesse Moble, our winner today. Oh, my gosh. Thank you. You did it against all odds. And before I tell you the rest of the titles in this game, Keneas, go ahead and do your plugs first. When is your show again? It is November 16th. That's a Sunday at Littlefield in Brooklyn, 3 p.m.
Starting point is 00:48:48 And you get to vote on who's hot and who's not. And there'll be some trivia and prizes and people will be stopping by, but you should definitely come. Yeah, that sounds super fun. on the 16th. Got it. I won't be on the East Coast at that time, but I'm still putting it
Starting point is 00:49:11 in my calendar. I appreciate it. All right. So now let's go through and we'll get, you guys will get to do your plugs at the end, but for now, I want to reveal because everybody's dying to know what's going on with the stupid list.
Starting point is 00:49:31 Number 17, as I mentioned before, was Halloween. And then 16 was, Tigers Are Not Afraid, which was a more recent, you know, critically acclaimed movie that I think lots of people still haven't even seen. 15 on the list was, I don't, horror doesn't seem right for it, but I guess it is, the original King Kong. Yeah, I mean, you gotta be some sort of You gotta be a real weenie to think that King Kong is a scary movie
Starting point is 00:50:08 Scarrier than Silence of the Lambs That's what's crazy that they think King Kong is more horror than science Yeah, but that's the thing is that film critics aren't necessarily giving it a great review as the scariest movie It could just be like you know something about it There's a greatness to it like psycho being at 14 and then your guess that you toss aside, Dan. Jaws is number 13.
Starting point is 00:50:35 12 is from this year, Sinners, is already number 12 on a list like this. Eleven is the original The Ring which, I don't think those, the Ring movies
Starting point is 00:50:50 never really scared me that much, but I get how people are creeped out by them. And then now we get to the top 10. And the very first one is just baffling to me. It's a movie from 1932 called Vampire, and it's spelled V-A-M-P-Y-R. And it got 98-something percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
Starting point is 00:51:19 My brother just watched this movie last night was sending me pictures of the screen as you watched that I can't believe I did. No way. Yeah, this isn't raging to me. damn it that is wild and he liked it uh he didn't say he liked it or not but he just let me know he watched it here look at this thing i'm watching yeah exactly look at a picture of it um well that is there's been weird coincidence is on this episode uh number nine absolutely not a scary movie in any stretch of the imagination from 1935 the bride of
Starting point is 00:51:52 Frankenstein but just very you know very well review number eight is one that now I might seek out because it's from 2009 and it's Australian called the loved ones has anybody heard of that no no yeah so it's it's it's it's never died of the best reviewed horror movies of all time so it might be worth a look uh number seven is a movie from 2020 called host did you see that one i loved host i thought host is so great yeah so do the critics 98 point something percent and then number six is a movie that got remade to uh you know was less well received but the original people love it let the right one in which you know i don't i guess it's got kind of scary moments in jump scares or whatever but
Starting point is 00:53:00 i think it's just more of a character you know a character drama um the number five is another uh wow it's already been 11 years i was going to say a semi recent classic but it was out in 2014 the baba duke hmm yeah Yeah, people love the Bavaduke. Four was get out. And now, again, my apologies, there was no way in hell. Anyone was going to say the three movies that are in the top three. They're, like, supported by critics, obviously, but then I don't know about the rest of the world.
Starting point is 00:53:41 Number three, from 2016, The Whaling. W-A-I-L-I-N-G, Whaling. Like a scream, like someone wailing? Yeah. I mean, that already sounds like pretentious, you know, slow burn horror to me, the wailing. And then number two is another one I'm not familiar with called Under the Shadow. What? Yeah, right?
Starting point is 00:54:12 I mean, just because critics loved it, then nobody paid attention to them. It's a weird thing. because number one is the movie I did see. I did think it was fairly effective, but it is the only movie on the list that is at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it's called His House. His house?
Starting point is 00:54:37 Yeah. Isn't that weird? It's about this guy who has a house and shit starts to happen, you know, and he's just like, hey, this is my house. Is it like classic haunted house? Like it's just a ghost haunts his house?
Starting point is 00:54:57 I don't, you know, I saw it and I thought it was good. I think maybe part of the enthusiasm for it is that it was an African-American cast. So that certainly made it stand out because, you know, that doesn't happen that much in horror. But yeah, it's, it was extremely, extremely well-reviewed. dude we got the new ones to add to the list yeah this is good yeah well that's the thing is ultimately uh i hope people seek some of these out and then you know reach out to me on social media and just be like how come you convince me to wash that garbage or say something nice if that's the way you that's the way you want to go dan perral thank you so much for being
Starting point is 00:55:42 here dude thank you for having me back Doug it is always so fun to do this thank you excited for for your next thing that's coming up. Do you have anything specific you'd like to plug? Yeah, let's see if I can. I mean, I'm acting in three or four things that will come out in 2026. I'm not sure what the first thing would be to release. I'll just say I worked on a rom-com last year that shot in Chicago called Love Language. It feels like a real throwback of an almost 90s kind of rom-com, which I love, stars close. Grace Moretz and a bunch of other great people and I play a goofy husband of Billy Lord in that movie and it was a blast to do that in and hang in Chicago for a bit so that should come out
Starting point is 00:56:30 sometime in 2026 Billy Lord is so funny in Book Smart oh she's the best she's great all right we'll look for that Dan Ryan Nemeth what would you like to promote dude well I'm just so glad I didn't choose my other my backup movie choices because they were no on anything you just listed. No, it's a wild list. That was a very tough game. Huge congratulations to Kniece. That was a great win.
