Doug hates candy rappers screaming baby sticky seeds with 50 as if he has a pop or kernels in his teeth.
There's still not one that he won't see because Doug loves movies.
Hey, hey, hey, everybody.
My name is Doug and I love what day is it?
October scary movies.
This is Doug loves movies recording on Sunday morning, October 5th, 2020.
And my guest today are Matt Belknap, Shane Black, and Jeff Tate.
Hello, gentlemen.
Hello.
Good morning.
Hello, everybody.
Let's meet everybody individually, alphabetically, by first name.
He is one of our most frequent guests.
Now he has a movie podcast of his own.
It's Jeff Tate.
Hey, Jeff.
Hey, good morning.
How's it going?
Oh, pretty good.
It turns out there's an 11 a.m. on Sunday, too.
Oh, right?
What did I say?
Oh, nothing.
I just bet it's just early for me.
Oh, I see.
Well, here's a tough question for you, considering it's early for you.
What would movie, you talk about a different movie each episode of your podcast?
Yeah.
What was the most recent?
the most recent one is
critters
critters
yeah
and what was your
assessment of critters
did you like it
it was less scary
than when I saw it when I was eight
I'll say that
right
a year old gave me nightmares
this one was
it was just fun
it's uh
you're not as scared of critters
as an adult I wouldn't think
no no no no it's not scary
it's uh
I think it's I think it suffers for
Like, it had no good luck casting-wise.
Like, if anybody that...
If one of those bounty hunters ended up being famous or whatever,
that movie would have a better, a longer tale.
Oh, I get it.
It's just dumb fun.
Well, that's what I'm hoping to have here today.
That's what I offer.
He was one, is one of the producers of this show you're listening to right now,
and he could be heard on every episode of Jimmy Pardo's Never,
not funny. It's Matt Bell Dap. Hey, Matt. Hey, Doug. How's it going? Uh, pretty good. Uh,
but I've got a question for you. Okay. Uh, you know, with work and family, all the things that
you do, do you get out to the old brick and mortar cinema at all? Every once in a while.
I made the effort to go see, uh, one battle after the, after another, uh, last week. Um,
just by my lonesome. What, uh, format did you decide? It's so there's so many,
to choose from i know i i wish i had had had it in me to to to go down to the vista but i just went to
the local burbank 16 and saw it and um i guess it was what you know they have so many different
things there it wasn't i max i think it was just the dolby at most theater i i can't remember
right it's i mean look at this point it's a great movie a movies a good movie's a good movie
regardless of how you see it like i watched movies on vhs as a kid so like i feel like
If it holds up, I'll probably, maybe I'll go see it again at the vista because I really enjoyed it.
But, but yeah, it worked for me.
Well, that's good to hear that, you know, I just like hearing people making the effort to go, you know, out to movies.
Yeah.
And, you know, you heard about Nicole Kidman and.
Keith Urban.
What's his name, Keith Urban?
I did.
Yeah, we're all, I'm wearing a black armband in honor of that.
I'm sure we've all seen variations on it, but somebody, of course, posted, well, of course they broke up.
I've been seeing Nicole Kimmey by herself with the movies for a few years now.
All right.
So excited to welcome back a guest that's been a few years since he's been on, but you can see his new movie right now on Prime.
It's Shane Black.
Hello, Shane.
Hey, how are you?
oh good yeah it's it's it's on right now and um called play dirty turn it on right now go see
it yeah just turn this off you can pause this this you can listen to any time well you
watch any time as well but yeah you could how they manage their time i guess is their business
but i'm just saying uh get on it because uh part of the reason i invited jeff to be on the show today
besides him being on the show regularly and good at it,
is that Jeff has seen play dirty twice already.
It's been out for a few days now, and he's watched it twice.
Okay.
I'm assuming that's not a bad thing.
No, it's a very good thing.
I watched it because I liked it.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's fucking great, man.
yeah it's it we tried our best you know uh yeah i mean it it checks a lot of boxes for me
because i like i've read all those books too the the hunter series yeah uh so i was i was so
excited to find out that there was a new one of those and a new shane black movie and they were
the same movie oh my god uh yeah there there may well be a few uh uh character purist
who will say, well, it's not, you know,
it's not the same sort of level of grim as the original,
you know, sort of Lee Marvin or, you know, it's interesting.
I just think that I love Donald Westlake, the author of those books.
Yeah, me too.
So does that mean that, are you going to do more of those,
adapt more of those books, or?
Oh, well.
Hard to say at this point.
Yeah, it's a little early. It's like, you know, it's like writing on a napkin, you know, an idea for a movie and the next thought is, yeah, what restaurant do we use for the rap party?
You know, it's a little too early to go there.
Okay, well, so is this question, is it too soon to ask if there's, I'm sure you get bothered about this a lot, but is,
there any hope for a nice guys to you know i i really i think that it's so doable in terms of
the project itself there's just so there's nothing to say don't do it's a it's a it's
begging for these guys to you know pull off another case um it's just will a studio commit to
a potentially very expensive sequel to a movie that didn't do well at the box office it's
it's a tough ask right but it's got that uh you know thing now where you know more
more people love it as time goes on like it's the the legend is building yeah but you had
this legend building around snakes on a plane right yeah but i think that's a little bit more
you know people right i mean on the on the flip side of that they made six lake placid movies
i haven't seen them all but i want to sit down and have a
festival one. The first one is terrific.
Yeah, but it really is. It wasn't a hit.
They didn't really need more. That first one is so perfect. I love the first one.
Well, before we play some games today, I would like each one of you to recommend a movie.
And since it's October, we ask for scary movies, please, or at least maybe suspenseful,
Jeff.
All right, I'm going to, I'm going to say Freaky Tales.
It's kind of spooky and suspenseful, not a little horror, but, man, it's so good.
Freaky Tales.
Yes, it's on HBO or whatever.
It just kind of went straight to streaming, but it's great.
Who's in it?
Ben Mendelssohn and Pedro Pascal and a bunch of other people, two shorts in it.
Oh.
it's great though it's very very fun and satisfying and but is it is like an anthology is that why it's
called tales it's four chapters and the the you know three separate chapters and then the fourth one
is the culmination you know how they make those oh all right i can't believe i'm learning all
about freaky tales right now i know it kind of it did not get a lot of a fanfare when it
came out.
No, it sounded, you know, when you said it, it sounded vaguely familiar.
But what's that other movie we like with Tales in the title?
Wild tales.
Yeah, that, it's like Argentinian or something.
Yeah, that movie's fantastic.
If anybody's looking for some wild tales instead of some freaky ones.
Yeah.
Just depends what mode you're in.
All right, great job, Jeff.
Matt, what would you like to recommend?
Man, scary movie wise.
Well, you know, I was like in my mind preparing for this question, not remembering
it's October.
So I wasn't thinking about scary movies.
And I wanted to recommend the Battle of Algiers, which is a great movie that you see
briefly in one battle after another.
So if people have seen the new movie, go back and watch another movie about revolution.
It's amazing.
But for horror movies, I'm going to say just as the father of a, like my son, I think was 11
or 12 when it came out.
But if you have kids who want to dip a toe in horror but are maybe scared to watch a real one,
the Five Nights at Freddy's movie is like a great, it's very by the numbers, but it's like
a great, not too scary, but still the same beats as a horror movie.
And kids, usually most kids know the video game five nights at Freddy, so they might be
interested in for that reason.
But yeah, you know, it hits the marks.
Like, I enjoyed it.
Sometimes when you take a kid to a movie, you just take a nap because the kids' movies
I don't know what's that great, but that one kept my attention and I enjoyed it.
So yeah, so go rent that one if you, if you haven't seen it yet.
They don't care if you just nod out.
They're just like, that's fine.
I don't, they don't notice, but like it is a little bit risky.
Like, you know, your job is to take care of your child.
So if you're sleeping, anything could happen to them in a movie theater, obviously.
But sometimes you can't help it.
Like if you're watching Nomeo and Juliet, you can't help it.
it's just it's not it's not gonna keep you awake yeah and they the seats get more and more
comfortable in these some of these places yeah that's true that's really you know you get a recliner
forget about it yeah um it's it's lights out time but five nights at freddies i you know
heard a lot of meg there was a lot of negativity hurled at that movie when it came out but
that sequel is on on its way i think yeah they made another one and um yeah like i said i mean
i think it's for a specific audience
I don't think it's meant to be, you know, competing against the hardcore horror movies of the day.
It's just, it's got its little niche and I kind of like that that exists.
Like, when I was a kid, there were movies like that too.
Like, I feel like Gremlins was a little bit like that where, you know, it wasn't that scary,
but it felt like you were seeing something a little bit like for, you know, when you're 10 or 12,
it's like, oh, this is kind of, this is kind of messed up.
There's like, you know, guys getting murdered and a little creature's exploding in a
microwave. That's good fun. So yeah, it's got a little bit of that. It's got some
some tame gore in it. Yeah, well, that was, you know, Kremlin's kind of legendary for having
been, you know, much more violent in its initial inception. And then somehow that Phoebe
Kate's Santa Claus scene still snuck into the, what's kind of a kid's movie.
I mean, the blood bath in the kitchen with the mom, and then he just,
never see the mom again? What happened to her?
He got rid of all
the gremlin. She didn't even know
they were there. He killed them all
and then, as far
as she knows, there's just monsters in her
kitchen and she kills a dozen
of them. Yeah, it's awesome.
It is awesome, yeah.
Well, it's just
perfect for Halloween, because
it brings up this concept which people
don't get these days. There's
in a polarized world of grisly
fun. Halloween
is where you see
lawns full of dead bodies
but it's playful
just a weird thing
Halloween it's always been that
and nowadays it's like demonic and pagan
and all this stuff but
you know Halloween was my favorite
always
yeah it's uh and it's
the season just keeps you know
stretching out
even longer it's like the day after
4th of July it's play ball
like that's it's
it's Halloween
time until
November 1st.
So for the entire
month of October every year, I just
asked my guests to recommend horror
movies. So what would you like to recommend
Shane?
Oh, I thought about it for a second.
I'm torn between two.
They both begin with the letter C.
The first one was a little
more successful. It's called companion
for Sophie Thatcher.
It's just, it's an absolutely
impeccable little gem, a piece of work
that's really just skillful as hell
and qualifies, I think, as horror.
The other one that's more obscure is horror.
It's this film called Cobweb with
Lizzie Kaplan and Anthony Starr.
And it's fantastic.
Bob Webb has come up on the show before
our friend Chad Opitz, I think, mentioned it.
He likes really
strange, unusual
movies. What's the
like what's the basic
storyline of common? Because it's not about a spider, right?
Well, at first you're not sure.
This here's noises
behind his wall. He's a very
sheltered kid, lives in this sort of
what you might at first think is sort of a religious
cult type family. They don't like the things he's being
taught at school.
And they keep him at home. And they're very
strict and they punish him in the cellar if he does something wrong. But he starts to hear this
thing, this voice talk to him through his wall. And from there, it just goes. It's really
quite something. All right, Tom Webb, probably streaming somewhere. I think at this point,
like on shutter or something, I would imagine. And the companion from this year has really been
the holding up for me is one of my
favorite films of the year.
He came out in January, and
for just sheer enjoyment
level, I don't think anything's topped
it for me.
Yeah, it's
there's not a scene that's not fun.
There's a wonderful scene
where, I'll just say the
line with those
spoilers was, wait, are you breaking up with me?
That was great.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's really, it's really fun, and I look forward to seeing what the guy who directed
that does next.
And these are some terrific recommendations, gents.
Hey, Doug, I just saw, Cobweb is on Netflix, actually, so people can go watch it there.
Oh, breaking news.
Wow.
Cobbweb on Netflix.
What's companion on then?
That's a great question.
Just burst in when you have the answer.
It's HBO Max.
okay yeah and and i guess rentable on prime yeah go to prime and pay 299 for god's sake
yeah support the artist say and what about the battle of algear oh jesus i i don't know where
you find that that's a great question yeah that one might be a tough find but uh that was
interesting piece of trivia that it's in that in that movie because i don't think i you know
whenever there's a movie on tv in a movie or a talk show or whatever it is i always
like to. Yeah. Oh, that's also on HBO Max. Yeah, go to HBO Max. You can see
the Battle of Alger's. It's kind of like a documentary style story about the
fight for independence in Algeria in the 1950s. Wow. And where's five doggia?
Jesus Christ. Okay. Oh, I love it. Where is freaky tales? Why don't you look those up
during the break and lay them out for me when we get back? We'll be right back.

We are back, and Matt, did you have enough time to look up those things?
Five Nights of Freddy's is just, you just rented on Prime.
Okay.
What was the other question you had?
Freaky Tales.
Freaky Tales.
Freaky Tales.
Freaky Tales is on HBO.
Okay, cool.
Yeah.
Yeah.
HBO Max.
That's pretty good.
I mean, look, if you don't have all of the things, those are three, what was it, Netflix, HBO, and then just
renting from whatever that's uh you got your bases covered there yeah yeah it's uh people can
definitely check out these movies a lot of times they might guess will you know recommend things
that are just like you know part of the fun is recommending something super obscure and then yeah
uh then nobody can find it but it's so fun to hear about sometimes um our first game today
is something that i call whose tagline is it anyway
I will say a tagline from a motion picture, and you have to guess which one, which movie it is.
Blurt?
No blurting.
We take turns, starting with, you know, start with Jeff.
If he misses it, then Matt gets a chance, and Matt Missed Shane gets a chance.
every time somebody gets one right
the next person
gets to go first in that order
and
they're not easy
I'll just say you that
this is this is like
you know you just have to take some swings
and there is a theme though
that will hopefully emerge
at some point you'll realize that they're
all have something in common
all of the answers
in this game
you ready jeff i'm ready okay uh what movie now these are you know sometimes they're from the poster
sometimes the trailer ads whatever like uh just something that is one of maybe several things
that katy came up with to sell the movie one movie has this tagline
the story of the strongest passion the world has ever known
uh okay um
oh man
I can't even think of a funny one
the 10
the 10 commandments
uh no
but he was really passionate about those rocks
yes he was super into it
he was really into it a lot of a lot of waving them around
right kind of defined his whole personality yeah defined his arms there's a good arm
walking around with those tablets all the time and of course bill bill brooks dropped one
it was the 15 commandress it dropped one if it all right matt can you read it to me again
the story the story of the strongest passion the world has ever known i mean i i feel like it's
it's a probably a cardinal rule that you don't use a word from the title in the tagline but
the first thing i thought of was the passion of the christ so i'm without any better thoughts i'm
going to just go with that okay that's not a terrible guess uh it's not the answer i'm looking
for but maybe shane knows what that part of me wishes at this point that i was paul lynde
you know, how he would always give the funny answer first.
You know, I'm going to say Troy.
Oh, that's not a bad guess either.
I like everybody having guesses.
That's a, you know, that's a step in the right direction.
But now that I'm looking at it, I might have said one of the words wrong.
I might have misread my...
What?
I know.
That's a really change of thing.
So let's go back, let's go back to Jeff, and in the same order, everybody gets a second guess.
Okay.
What if this was the, what if this was the actual tagline?
This is unprecedented.
Yeah.
The story of the strangest passion the world has ever known.
Oh.
I don't know which one it is, strongest or strangest, but it could be either based on my handwriting.
Oh, that's a, that's the tagline for the shape of water.
No.
Matt
Harold and Maud
This is a good game for the future
Just have to
Have the wrong word
Yeah yeah
Put the right word in
But Harold and Maud is incorrect
Shane
Oh geez
That one's got me
The modern remake of Psycho
The story of the strangest
The world has ever known
Or strongest
Whichever one it is
it is you know he is
capable of quite a lot of passion
it's Dracula from
1931 oh
whoa yeah
okay
yeah they
it's reassuring because there was no
no goddamn chance on that one
no that one just out of the blue you don't even have an idea
what the theme might be
but let's note a round two and Jeff
you're up first again
and I wrote it's the one down
super accurately
and it's
it's just funny
how specific sometimes
the tagline can be
Universal's greatest
production for 1925
The Mummy
Come on out everybody
No it's not the mummy
Damn
Matt
What else we got in the
in the universal horror is the wolfman no it's not the wolf man say oh 25 is silent pictures
yeah uh shit i i'm trying to think of big but the great train robbery no that was earlier
no no no no no no let's go with birth of the nation um that's
It's like, it's like overeducated guests is what I would call that.
It's a Phantom of the Opera.
Ah, wow.
Oh, it's Halloween.
There's a theme of Halloween.
Now we know.
All right, Jeff, are you ready?
Yes.
Uh, uh, uh, uh,
hideous,
half-man, half-beast
who terrorized millions.
The wolf-man.
That sounds like something that our current administration would say.
Right?
Somehow one half-man, half-beast, terrorized millions.
That beast got around.
Your guest was what, Jeff?
The Wolfman.
No, that's incorrect.
Oh, my God. I thought that was it too. Half-Man, half-beast. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
No, but that's not really accurate, but...
Yeah, no. I was so flummoxed by the fact that it wasn't the Wolfman, I couldn't pull another half-man-half-beast.
But both halves of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. They're both people still. One of them is not a beast.
Yeah, but one of them is a maniacs.
He's got a bad attitude.
You're right about that.
So, yeah, you could consider him a beastly.
Oh, you beast!
Yeah, that's a metaphor.
Yeah.
Literally a beast.
Shane, what do you think?
We guessed, what were the guesses so far, Wolfman and...
Jacqueline Hyde.
Jacklin Hyde.
Yeah, I'm torn.
I want to go with War of the Colossal Beast or Werewolf of London.
Which one?
War Wolf of London.
That is correct.
Oh.
Whoa.
Wow.
You got it.
So we were right about the Wolfman part.
Yeah, no, a little curveball there with the titles.
Yeah.
That's part of the fun.
Jeff?
Yes.
I never learned to hit curveballs.
One movie has the tagline and fits the theme of this game.
The tagline is the Tomb of a Thousand Terror's.
Okay, so we've had a werewolf, Dracula, and so this one's the mummy.
That's your answer?
Yes.
Incorrect.
Oh, motherfucker.
What the fuck?
Another curveball.
I should stop close of my eyes and swing it, huh?
Okay.
Once again, I thought we had it.
Now I just got to go like weird, you know, maybe to like,
is it the scorpion king uh no i don't hate it but no shame pulled out that last one he
no yeah that was a that was a fluke this is uh tomb of a thousand terrors that sounds yeah that sounds
very sort of later you know 60 70 um yeah they toned down the rhetoric from millions to thousands
How about the abominable Dr. Fibes?
Another fantastic guest.
But no, and everybody's right to not know that this one is called
The Mummy's Hand.
Hey, you didn't let me finish.
Yeah.
I cut you off.
The Mummy.
The Mummy.
So Shane officially wins that game.
Congratulations, Shane.
What do I get?
Oh, it did absolutely nothing.
You know, you get that like burst of, you know,
endorphins pride for job well done.
Yeah, that in 50 cents will get me a donut.
Yeah.
Where are you getting these things that donut?
Give me your donut spot.
Vooder donuts is you got it's updated as $7 and then we'll get me a job.
All right.
But I got one more for you, Shane.
I'm just going to say it directly to you so you could show off.
This was going to be a tiebreaker if we needed one.
But you won the game flat out.
But what do you think the – what movie has the tagline?
She breathes, sees, hears, walks, but can she love?
Oh, my God.
well the
the bride of Frank
she never really walked
she showed up to set
and they wrapped her up
and she kind of had a doze off between takes
let me see
I don't
that sounds like
Plan 9 from outer space or something
well maybe like sometimes
maybe a tagline's written by somebody who hasn't even seen the movie
as maybe my theory of what happened here
because it says that she walks
and you're right is Brian of Frankenstein
Oh, okay
Yeah
I just assumed that she walked
Yeah, I guess
Maybe she did get up at one point
Did she get up when she points at them and screams and starts
Yeah, I think she kind of
walks around at that point.
So she tottered.
She clumps around.
She's not good at it.
But every single answer to that game were universal monster movies, and they are playing
on Friday matinees here at the New Beverly in Los Angeles this month.
So once again, congrats to Shane Black.
You do get a slight advantage in our next game.
You get to go first because you.
one in this game and we will play that game after these messages we'll be right back we are back
and Shane black gets to go first in the game that's going to determine it all today to decide
our winner between Shane and Matt and Jeff that's the order you will go in in this game
and Shane is up first it's called Mr. Spielberg okay Stephen Spielberg is
directed some of the most successful
scary slash
suspenseful movies
ever
and 1941.
In this game,
you have to take turns guessing
which Spielberg titles
are in the top 10
best reviewed of
his career
according to
Rotten Tomatoes.
And this is directed, not
produced. Sorry, Poulter
Geist, stick this one out.
If you name the number one movie, you get
10 points. If you name the number
10 movie, you get
one point, there's a bunch points in
between, and
Shane,
you're up first. I have
three guesses. You'll get three guesses total.
But what is your first
first crack at it?
Yeah, Jaws would be, come to mind.
You think Jaws
is one of the top 10
best-reviewed movies
in the Spielberg
filmography.
It is shockingly
number three on the list.
Whoa. Yeah.
With 97%
of the
critics on Rotten Tomato giving it a
positive. Who the hell
gives a negative review the choice?
I don't know.
Look it up.
That 3% is really, they should be held accountable for sure.
I want to read the Splat review on that one.
But you have a strong start here in this game with eight points.
Secondly would be Raiders of the Law Store.
Well, you wait until, like, now Matt's going to guess one.
Oh, I thought you said I had three guesses.
You do total, but we're going to take terms until you've all had three.
So, gentlemen, forget what you just heard.
or wiping my memory.
Strike that from the record jury
style
from your memory. And Matt,
you probably weren't going to guess that
anyway, were you? No,
no. I have
a choice to make between two
of his
most acclaimed
dramatic films, and I'm going to
go with Schindler's List.
Schindler's List is quite
acclaimed at
98
percent again we got two percent out there going well it wasn't for me that's nine points for
that's number two movie on the list leaving still a number one maybe jeff will name it
well maybe he won't what do you think it could be jeff uh saving private ryan that is on the list
but all the way down at number five.
What?
Oh,
with 94%.
That was the movie, of course,
that famously, like everybody gripes
about it losing to
Shakespeare in love for best pitcher.
But six points for you for that one, Jeff.
So we'll take it.
We've got a, yeah, see, we got a real
suit and match here.
We got Matt's in the lead with nine,
which Shane's right there
with eight, Jeff has six, the number one movie is still out there and up for grabs.
Do you want to say that same movie you said earlier, Shane, or have you changed your answer?
It was such a big deal at the time.
I can't imagine someone saying, oh, this is nonsense and the horror.
So, yeah, let's go with Raiders to the Lost Heart.
Number six on the list.
What the hell's happening?
Yeah, number six.
So that's worth five more points for Shane.
so it's even more comfortable lead at this point.
Yeah.
Matt.
Oh, boy.
I am, I'm baffled by the order of these movies.
Ooh.
Let me recap for you real quick.
Number two is Schindler's list.
Number three is Jaws.
Then we still have that, you know, one and four still open.
Five is saving Private Ryan and six is Raiders in the Lost Ark.
yeah oh of course i just thought of the one okay when we get back to you hopefully it'll still
be available i guess i got to go well this is tricky because there's some some big box
office ones that i think were pretty well received but i you know i don't know critically i
guess i'm just going to say uh et the extraterrestrial et et et et
colon the extraterrestrial correct
ET's colon
full of beer and candy
yep
that explains the finger
number one
oh
number one
wow that's very surprising to me
yeah and nobody hates that movie
99%
yeah Spielberg doesn't have
a 100%
a positive review
movie what a shame
but yeah that one is
E.T. is number one on the list
but there's still
opportunities for more points out there
and anybody, it's anybody's game except for probably
Jeff.
What's your next guest, Jeff?
Jurassic Park.
I like you said that with a smile in your voice
and a velociraptor
near heart.
Number 10 on the list.
Oh, my God.
The great Jurassic Park.
Probably one of his more, you know, scary kind of fits more into the Halloween vibe.
I saw the most recent one, the rebirth.
Yeah.
It was fine.
Yeah.
I had a movie that year that got buried by Jurassic Park.
We did last action hero that year.
Yeah.
Oh, oh, the same here as the first one.
Oh, my goodness.
Yeah, that was, that movie was, it's insane.
I mean, it just shows you how much people want to see a dinosaur on a big screen
because, you know, all the sequels to the Jurassic Park movies, you know,
you could argue none of them are as good as the original, and they still keep making them.
They still keep making a ton of money.
But last Boy Scout, that is...
No, no, not Last Boy Scout, Last Action Hero.
Oh, sorry, sorry.
Well, because...
Believe me, last Boy Scout got back.
buried as well so for other reasons not by me yeah yeah i love it i watched i watched it yesterday
yeah right last action hero though uh yeah was like uh it was just interesting to have such a big
summer movie that was making so much fun of of blockbusters and yeah he had a lot of flaws i
remember going to the premiere and everyone was silent afterwards so that's never a good
And they had this giant, like set up, like this carnival with a giant 50-foot Arnold Schwarzenegger and rides and everything.
It was just like quietly sort of sullenly going to the rides and sitting there.
Oh, man.
That was one of, it seemed like the public, well, like the movie was a commentary on Schwarzenegger's career and on action movies.
But then it was marketed like a straight Schwarzenegger movie.
And I think maybe people were like, oh, this isn't what we thought we were getting with this.
They, like, were thrown off by that, perhaps.
I think it was also tonally a little highbrow in the sense that it was trying,
it was showing off a little.
I thought it was a bit precious.
It was meta before everybody started throwing that word around.
Right.
Yeah.
Right.
I personally think it's the Jim Belushi was in it.
And that brings down everything.
it's like in one scene or something right yeah but that's enough man it's boats only have one anchor
Jeff what about trading places he's in one scene in trading places and it's one of the best
comedy's ever made um I come on man I'm not prepared for cross-examination
Turner and Hooch was off the charts made a lot of money there you go
Wait, he's in Turner and Hooch?
Wait, no, he was in the TV show.
So, sorry.
He was in the TV.
He played the Tom Hanks part in the TV version.
No, no.
You know what you're thinking of?
He was...
Canine?
Oh, K-9.
I'm thinking of K-9.
Yeah.
K-9.
Yes.
Well, I guess that didn't do quite as well.
That's so funny.
The Dante's peeked at his...
He did not brag down the movie.
movie thief.
No, that's true.
That's a very good point.
All right, all right, guys.
You found me out.
I was just being flippant.
He didn't drag down a little shop of horrors.
He's barely in it.
You know what I don't even remember him in it.
Yeah, he's in there.
All right.
Let's get back to our game.
Very exciting because Shane, was that the one that popped into your head?
Was it E.T?
Yeah, but for the win.
um oh i like it here we go yeah most encounters of the third kind yeah the confidence oh man
i appreciate the confidence i really do but that came in at number 11 what what
oh my god that was gonna be my guess too that i have it all locked and loaded it's 90 but
here's what i think happens with like a classic like a movie like that from you know all the way
back in the 70s
is that
you know
they don't get the aggregate at that
time of the reviews
so now it's just at some point
rhyme to me as well what we're
going to give to you know
close encounters and they find all the reviews
that they can and maybe even
get some new ones from you know
newer critics and then
they come up with a number so I think that
one got shafted for that
reason
but you'll see what the other movies are in the top ten uh in a second uh but matt do you have a third guess
yeah um like the oscar baity ones that he made the other ones i feel like we're all a little bit
mixed so i don't want to go there necessarily um but so i'm going to say a movie that i think
doug you maybe don't like but i actually like it a lot um Indiana Jones in the last crusade
that's so funny that you would know i i like uh you know i like sean connery the addition of his character
and how he plays with harrison ford is is really good but i found
you know i just was disappointed they went like back to nazis i thought he was going to be
like doing more different kinds of adventures over the years right and so i didn't need Nazis again
and then um you know the villains and the and the girlfriend all that none of that stuff was as appealing to me
previous installments.
But, you know, I'm the one that thinks that Temple of Doom is the best one in the series,
so what do I know?
You're not alone in that.
I think there's a handful, you know, there's definitely people who lean that way because
maybe it's the purest expression of what, you know, what the concept was all about.
I mean, Raiders is also flawless.
Yeah, Raiders is amazing, but like the sequel to me was just like,
why is this so incredibly insanely violent like it's very violent yeah yeah you know and it's but it's
but it feels like a family movie so it's really uh it's interesting to me um did you guess
yeah i said last oh right crusade um the reason i was stalling there is because i was going to try
to uh to find it it it's number 17 of the yeah yeah yeah
So the fire's gone out in your...
Damn it.
You're safe, though. You're safe because Jeff can't possibly catch you,
but I still want Jeff to have a final try.
All right. My guess is Minority Report.
Excellent guess in a movie that, you know,
the more and more we get all the kinds of technology we're getting these days,
and more that movie is kind of free.
how accurate it was, but number 13 on the list.
Oh, man.
Yeah.
I should have said Crystal Skull.
Well, congratulations, Matt, Belknap.
You are the winner today.
But, you know, of course, everybody here is a winner if you ask me.
But that means, Matt, before I reveal the rest of the answers,
you get to promote stuff first.
stuff first what would you like to promote yeah just just check out if you like comedy and
podcasts listen to never not funny it's uh out there wherever you get podcasts and um yeah we've been
we just uh who do we just have on we've had some good good guests recently um our pal wayne
fetterman was on i think that's that one's maybe behind the paywall but uh but yeah just uh check
it out fun stuff right on um now i'm going to reveal to you all the
ones we didn't get, ones that caught went unmentioned.
Can we try to guess just like a rapid fire?
I mean, you know, I don't mind keeping the game going.
No, you can read it.
My next guess was Catch Me if you can.
Oh, that's a great guess.
Yes.
Man, dang.
Yes, number four on the list.
Oh, whoa.
Yeah.
If you just pulled that one sooner, it would have changed.
everything. I would have won and got to promote things first.
But yeah, cats me if you can is
maybe with Jaws, like those are my two
favorite Spielberg movies. I mean, I just love that movie. And it got
a 96% on the
on the rotten tomatoes. But then we
go down to, of course, 10 was Jurassic Park. Nine was
Bridge of Spies
Yeah, okay
Yeah, I won some Oscars
And the critics loved it
Mark Rylance, I think won
He won supporting actor
I think he's always great
And everything
So it's part of a
Kind of a career award, I think
The number eight is
West Side Story
Wow
Wow
I know
I think you'd think more people
Who razzed him
For just sort of
taking what was great about the first
West Side story and then
you know
tweaking some other stuff
and still not having a
you know a strong leading man
I really do think that that one casting
choice kind of ruined it
like I thought it kind of it's strange
I think it could have been actually great
and then he just was really really wrong
no even the guy that played
his second in command would have been
better yeah that guy's good
yeah he's so good all right and then number seven this one really rankles me because i just didn't
i wasn't on board with this movie i didn't get i didn't get the appeal of it uh the fablemans
well yeah good old fablemen's what do you guys what do you fablemen's do for living do you make
up stories yes how did you
get to Matt Bell Dap, but also...
Wait, that was it?
That's all of them, the 10?
Yeah.
Oh, I don't know why I thought maybe Amistad would be somewhere in there.
Catch me if you can was four, draws his three,
there's less than, ET, and then, if you want to go deeper down the list,
the other direction, Lincoln was number 12.
Okay.
14 was, this to me shouldn't count because it was a TV movie, but it is a good one, dual.
15 was the post
16 was Sugarland Express
his first
first feature film
18 was Munich
19 Amistad
20
Indiana Jones and Temple
to do
I mean the guy puts out bangers
like his top 10
are all all got 90%
or better and I think some of those
ones in the teens were like nominated for best picture
right like i think amistad was nominated for best picture yeah and lincoln was and the post was
the munich was they all he just gets you know at the very least he gets a few uh you know technical
award uh you know is right is more fanciful movies that that uh shame black thank you so much
for spending this time with us the movie again is called
play dirty
that's right
and it's an
Amazon Prime
it opened on the first of October
there and it was it's
exclusively a cable movie
but
that's not to say that it's a
by any means a cheap
or thrifty
movie it
no it qualifies it's a real movie
that's just that's playing
you know on a streamer
but it's legit
and it's a shame that
you know more of these movies aren't getting
you know theatrical play but
you know
what we we signed up for
you know it's Amazon
gave us what we needed
right
left us pretty much alone
but it is
it was always going to be on their platform
and so it's where
we don't really know yet
where streaming has landed
or what's you know
it's still
in flux in terms of the business.
Everything seems to be bombing
at the theaters this summer
as I can see.
Yeah, it's been rough, but then,
you know, some things, you know,
managed to...
The weapons, weapons suddenly
things. It's so
unpredictable.
Yeah, but one thing
you can point to this year is that things like
weapons and sinners are not, you know,
they don't have to continue
to be so married to
an IP, you know, to, you know, a known thing, like original stories can actually, you know, generate a lot of business.
That's the best news ever, yeah.
Yeah.
Jeff Tate, what would you like to promote, buddy?
You know, I got that Saturday afternoon movie club podcast and Play Dirty.
I want to promote Play Dirty.
I'm doing the fucking rips.
It's very fun.
If it wasn't the theater, I'd have seen it.
twice this weekend. God bless you sure. I'm definitely going to see it very soon and I'm super
excited about it. I'm going to be doing a Douglas movies. The final Douglas movies of this month
will be on recorded Friday, October 31st Halloween at the Punchline in Sacramento. Always a fun
place to do the show. And the next afternoon I'm doing a stand-up show at Cobbs in San Francisco
and the first Tuesday of every month
the Venson movie interruption happens
at Dynasty Typewriter
in Los Angeles.
We did one, we did a special one
yesterday, and we watched
Weekend at Bernie's Two.
Oh, that one got through.
It was rough.
Yeah, yeah, you were there the month before somebody
brought it. Two people brought it.
Two different people brought that movie
last month. Yeah, the one
lady brought it back again.
The other guy didn't. He changed his
movie, but then everybody
picked it, and it is
really, really, really rough
because, like, I had forgotten it, like,
a weekend where he's two,
the dead Bernie body,
he's reincarnated, like he gets up
and dances around because of a voodoo curse.
Yeah.
It's so stupid.
Did it do well?
I don't think so, no. I think it,
I think the first one didn't really,
like it was one of those things where the
sequel was kind of a surprise like they really thought the first one did well enough and then
but the second one they're kind of stuck yeah they get i can see that development meaning
i think they went into like three or four i don't know how many weekend at bernie's movies
there are total but uh but number two should have had should have put the stake in the heart of it
and put it into it.
Yeah.
Thanks once again.
Shade Black, Matt Bell Dap, Jeff Tate,
and everybody for listen.
And as always,
I'll put five on the mutt.
Now it's time to look to watch another talking.
Eyes of Gold is viewing prowess makes it cocky.
There's no room in his heart for you.
Because Doug.
