Starting point is 00:00:00 Doug hates candy wrappers screaming baby sticky seeds with 50 acid pop or kernels in his teeth. There's still not one that he won't see because Doug. Hey, hey, hey, everybody. My name is Doug and I love movies. This is Doug Loves Movies recording on Wednesday afternoon, March 25th, 2026. And we've got live in-person tapings coming up all over the place, April 11th, in Key West Florida, April 17th in Austin, Texas, Rosemont, Illinois, on Cinco de Mayo, and in Los Angeles, on May 7th. Look out for all of those, wherever you look out for those sort of things.
Starting point is 00:00:48 My guests today are a current champion, a newbie, and a gone for too long bee. They are Matthew Shear, Johnny Taylor, Jr., and Lisa Trager. Hello. Hello. Hello. Hello. Hi. Let's meet them all individually and alphabetically by first name.
Starting point is 00:01:13 He is the returning champ and a jolt of energy. It's Johnny Taylor Jr. Oh, hey, Doug. How's it going? That's what I was going to ask you. I have it written right here, how's it going, man? It's pretty good. That's good.
Starting point is 00:01:32 Things are good. I mean, I'm part of two lost episodes, which I might be the leader in lost episodes, but. Possibly, yeah. Two might be a little, there might be somebody that's in three lost episodes because it happens over the years. You know, we'll go to different places to do a show and you just got to cross your fingers that people know how to hit the record button. Yeah, lost the sketchfest episode, which it was. so fun. Yeah. No, we had such a great time. That's the other thing about lost episodes. Is it rarely a DUD episode where I was like, well, that's all right by me. It's usually one. I'm like, oh, damn. I wish people could heard that. Now, today, Johnny, you might lose your crown because we've got you up against
Starting point is 00:02:22 a ringer and a dinger. Ringer and a dinger. I don't know what a dinger is, but the ringer I'm referring to and the person referred to at the top of the show as having not been back soon enough is Lisa Trager. Hey Lisa. Hello, thrilled to be here. I do love movies, but I think I've lost every
Starting point is 00:02:44 single time I've played by a lot. Well, yeah, unfortunately. That's hard for us to recall because it has been a ridiculous number of years since you've been on. Yeah, and I got to do a special one in the fish tank at Sirius. That was really special.
Starting point is 00:03:00 That was one of the best. That was one of my favorite memories. That was super fun and also odd. It was just odd sitting in the lobby of the serious doing Douglas movies with Justin Long.
Starting point is 00:03:16 Yeah. And you and Mark Normand and who was the fourth? Was there a fourth? Was it Bennington? I honestly didn't care about anyone but Justin Long to be honest. Yeah, he really He was pulling focus.
Starting point is 00:03:32 He also put on that, that knitted alien mask, I remember. Yes. And I wore that for a little while. It was sexy. New and final season of survival of the thickest is out soon, yes? Yeah, we finished shooting season three,
Starting point is 00:03:51 and it was so fun. I loved it. And I got to take so much clothes and some set stuff. So I'm excited. You like the way your character dress? yeah i mean she's like pretty funky but the pieces are good yeah yeah she's silly but the clothes are good the clothes are good yeah that's good that's it's you know i just i don't imagine that like urkel went
Starting point is 00:04:18 home with a lot of his outfit had to go back pretty far for a reference good thing of a recent tv character that dresses badly damn so just for me to irkle Okay, cool. I like that pipeline. That's my mind. Just, you know, it's crazy. So do you know the release date of the final season of survival tickets? No, absolutely not, but they just... It's soon, though, right? I don't think so. They just wrapped. Like, they have to edit and, like, do all that nonsense. But they did release a photo of me on set with Garcel Bouvet, and, like, that's pretty special.
Starting point is 00:04:53 So I look at that sometimes. Very cool. Yeah, I was wearing sweatpants. I learned a valuable lesson looking at that photo that maybe I should dress in clothes. when I show up to places. Just go no clothes? I was just in a full sweatsuit, and everyone's really glamorous, so it's kind of a nightmare.
Starting point is 00:05:11 I'm wearing my own podcast merch and gray sweatpants. Well, that's why we let, you know, that's why this podcast is audio only so that people can just, you know, crawl over to their device and be on the show without fear of being seen. I don't mind people seeing me. I'm gross.
Starting point is 00:05:30 I didn't shower after soul. cycle, but I was willing to be on camera for anything, anywhere, anytime. All right. Well, let me introduce our third guest today because he is the newbie I was referring to, but is the director, writer, and co-star of Fantasy Life, which I believe is in theaters on April 3rd. Matthew Shear, hi, Matt. Hi, Doug.
Starting point is 00:06:00 Tell us about. about the movie? Sure. It's a movie, so you'll see it. Feat your length, hour 31 minutes, I believe. Yes, yes. Yeah, it's a tolerable length. It's half a Titanic. Yes, exactly. That's on the poster. It follows a youngish man, played by, me who is struggling with some mental health issues and he, you know, he's just lost his job, he's a law school dropout. He's struggling. He goes to see his psychiatrist, played by Judd Hirsch, and he is then hired to babysit his psychiatrist's grandchildren, and he falls for
Starting point is 00:07:01 for their mother played by Amanda Pete. So that is kind of the gist of it. I love Amanda Pete. Yeah. Wonderful. She is great. She's on the movie grid deep cut right now this week. If someone wants to test their Amanda Pete knowledge on the internet.
Starting point is 00:07:18 Oh, really? Yeah. How deep does it go? Well, it's just one of the categories. There's like the normal game and then they do a classics, a deep cut. So it's like however deep you go, the better score, like the deeper the cut, the better your score. Oh, so you pick which cut you're going to do and then find out what the question is?
Starting point is 00:07:41 There is no questions. So it's a grid. I apologize, Matthew. I think you were promoting your movie that you've created fully from scratch. Listen, it's, you know, I'm just here to play. I'll send you the link, I'll send you the link. Okay, please do. I'm sure lots of people listening are like, you know, familiar with what you're talking about.
Starting point is 00:08:06 I just don't know anything about it. I mean, I do. The grid part don't sound familiar. And I think it's something I've tried and lost steam on because it was a, you know, what's that? Nothing. I think it was yesterday. I've ruined everything. I'm like humiliated it.
Starting point is 00:08:21 You told me about it yesterday? No, I just, I want to like men and black like hit everyone in the face of the way. ignore this part. Everybody neuralize your face and forget about all. It's like tell the jury. I'm humiliated. Ignore the last few
Starting point is 00:08:41 moments of the of the trial. All right. I'm sure it's very cool what you're talking about. And I'm sure I nerdy games that I play on my phone that people don't know what the hell I'm talking about if I bring it up.
Starting point is 00:09:00 But that being said, was I accurate about the release date, Matthew? Is it April 3rd? In a way. It's going to expand. Yes. It releases in New York this Friday the 27th at the Angelica Film Center and then in L.A. and everywhere else on April 3rd. Oh, okay, cool.
Starting point is 00:09:28 So yeah, New Yorkers just go bust up and get down to the Angelica. And I tell you, that theater, I've hardly ever been steered wrong by going there. And to let you know how long I've been going to movies, Antigelica, that's where I saw supersized me. Whoa. Yeah, crazy, right? The inspiration. If you will. Yes.
Starting point is 00:10:00 Before you play some trivia games today, I would like each one of you to visit with me, what I'm now calling Recommendation Station. And that's where each of you recommend one movie. We'll start with Johnny Taylor Jr. What do you think people should see or would like to see if they saw it? I just watched this one. And I got to be honest. I'm doing kind of a recommend because I want to make sure that I'm not crazy.
Starting point is 00:10:32 I saw Honey Don't. Do you see that, Doug? I didn't don't. So, Margaret Qualley. Yeah. Aubrey Plaza. Love them both. This was a huge mess for me.
Starting point is 00:10:47 But I think I'm, but I've talked to people that loved it. So I'm recommending watch it. Let me know that if I'm crazy or not. And then reach out to you to tell you that you're not crazy for. hating something that you trick them into watching. Yes, I'm really seeking validation from my opinion on the movie. Because it seems like I'm in the minority, but I, like Honey Don't is what the person selling the tickets and the box office should say to
Starting point is 00:11:16 someone trying to buy a ticket to Honey Don't. Honey, please don't. Please. You're going to regret it. I saw Drive by Dolls, the move, the first movie with quite, that a Cohen brother that was not working with the other Colin brother did. I didn't see that.
Starting point is 00:11:34 What did you think of that one? I didn't care for it. So that's why I dipped on Honey Don't. It's because I was just worried it would be more of the same. I think he made the right call, Doug. And I think that the other Coen brothers gone, has gone too highfalute, too high brow, because I didn't like his Shakespeare movie that much.
Starting point is 00:11:54 So now we've just lost, you know, future great Coen Brothers movies to whatever it is they're going to do without each other. Yeah, I think it's some things are just better
Starting point is 00:12:07 together. It's like peanut butter and jelly. Yeah. Yeah. But I'd say one of the poems is definitely the peanut butter. Like one of them's
Starting point is 00:12:17 a more substantial one. Yeah, one of them. One of them can be crunchy or creamy. One of them is less frivolous. All right. Well, that's an interesting approach
Starting point is 00:12:31 recommending something just to find out if you were right or not about it being bad. And definitely reach out to what's your social media hipsterocracy? Yep, that hipsterocracy. Let me know. Reach out to him, let him know. Especially if you've already seen Honeydon,
Starting point is 00:12:49 didn't have to bother to see it just to talk to him about it. But either way, if you're going to give it a spin just because of this anti-recommendation. This is so punk rock of you, Johnny. You know, I try to, I try to stand brand. Yeah, you really are, you're really fighting the system.
Starting point is 00:13:09 Lisa, do you have a terrible movie that you're not sure if it's terrible or not? So you want people to watch it and suffer along with you? No. Okay, good. Give me a real recommendation. Well, okay, listen, I'll be honest here. I've been in such a heated rivalry, like, kind of psychosis that I really think about nothing else or do anything else. And I started reading.
Starting point is 00:13:33 I haven't read in a decade. I've read eight gay hockey books in two months. And it's kind of hard. But last night, I came home a little tipsy in a good mood. I watched the Hannah Montana, 20th anniversary special. And then it was streaming. It's one of my favorite movies of all time. Definitely in my top three.
Starting point is 00:13:53 Big Business is there. Love big business. I watch some big business, Lily Tomlin, Bet Midler, I want all the outfits. I want to be at the Plaza Hotel. I want to be at FBO Schwartz. I love that.
Starting point is 00:14:06 So I love that if people want to watch it from the 80s. I just saw, was it on drag race? I just saw somebody say that somebody looked like they were dressed like they were in big business. Maybe I know a few seasons ago, Rose did an homage and wore the polka dot to the benefit I've
Starting point is 00:14:28 not caught up with this season if like they've done more but that would be a throw for sure yeah I think that was a reference somebody made recently and I get like I get those they did a lot of like different combos of those was that the only time
Starting point is 00:14:47 the Lily Tomlin and that Midler were in something together that's where my knowledge ends yeah but that movie I like. I think that was the only time they were together. But, you know, then Bet was in a movie with somebody else, and Lily Tomlin was in 9 to 5 with Jane and Dolly.
Starting point is 00:15:06 I mean, that was in beaches after, right? And beaches with Barbara Hershey. And, like, yeah, they all just sort of traded off and, you know, worked in things together. But, like, pairing people up seemed to be around the time of big business, the pairing up of comedic, actors and actresses was like a real thing.
Starting point is 00:15:28 Like I don't even know. And I mean two sets of twins switched at birth meeting up. Like that's a lot of technology for that time as well. That was a lot. That was a lot. And a friend of Biden's been on this so much time with Nick Rutherford. He plays. I like him. He plays
Starting point is 00:15:43 he's with the little, in one scene the beginning of the movie. He's the little boy. Is he the fucking baby? Yeah. He's the little kid at the beginning. Are you kidding me? I have to text him. I know you're not kidding. It's a phrase.
Starting point is 00:15:57 It's a phrase. I'm thrilled. Dude. I am dead serious. I am so pumped. Yeah. Oh, my God. I never thought he was cool, but now I do.
Starting point is 00:16:13 Yeah. Well, and he's going to be another level of cool for you if you watch the new season of jury duty, the company retreat season. Yes. going to watch it. Because Nick Rutherford's in that also. That's amazing. Yeah. All right, Matt, you've had a little time to think about it.
Starting point is 00:16:33 What would you like to recommend? You know, I was trying to think of something else. I had my initial idea, and then I was like, these people have probably seen this and it's been out a little bit. But I have two young children, and it's hard to get out to the movies. this is what my wife and I saw and it was awesome was Nirvana the band the show the movie
Starting point is 00:17:01 I thought you were leading up to recommending a kids movie Hoppers The rescuers down under Yeah yeah yeah Dude I just bought a rescueers down under her shirt And it fucking is awesome And people like it people compliment me all the time Sorry I keep interrupting you Matthew
Starting point is 00:17:22 I apologize. Which rescuers are on it? What do you mean? It's Bianca. Oh, it's Bianca. Yeah, it's like, Bernard. Bernard, Bernard.
Starting point is 00:17:34 Yeah, it's the mice. It's the mice. Now it's sounding like I don't believe you. You may just start up. No, but I wanted to. I'm actually, if you can help me make it, I designed a reptiles of Disney shirt and has Joanna the lizard and has all the kind of lizards of the Disney universe on it.
Starting point is 00:17:52 I'm going to make that. That's an interesting list of Disney lizards because I certainly couldn't name any, but I'm sure there's been some. I'll text. I'll send it to. There's a lot of Disney movies where there's a ton of creatures of all kinds, and I'm sure lizards have been depicted on more than one occasion, but maybe not given a name.
Starting point is 00:18:14 There might have just been like a... No, there are all the snakes and the crocs and, like, all the monsters ink reptiles. I count too, even if I'm... Oh, okay. Yeah, Randall's kind of a reptile, right? Oh, yeah, I would say so. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:28 And his girlfriend. Back to Matt, Nirvana, the band, the movie of the show. Did you see it? I did see it. And I joined it very much. But it has come up a few times now during this segment because, you know, the people who do see it tend to either love it or not get it at all. Oh, interesting. It's the vibe that I get from out in the world.
Starting point is 00:18:55 So it's not a big hit, but it's already like a kind of a cult thing. Like it's already got. Like a polarizing. Yeah. Yeah. It's got some very fervent followers. But what about it did you enjoy? I was just so, I didn't know anything about it.
Starting point is 00:19:12 I'd never seen the show. And I just was kind of interested in the title. and it was so funny and also like scary to the point where I was like clutching my wife like really frightening, you know, stunt stuff. And then I was like moved. It was like extremely touching. And all in this really like bizarre and sort of. of time-warping kind of far-out narrative.
Starting point is 00:19:58 Yeah, well, also, I don't know, an extremely low budget and very few characters and shooting scenes where there's just people in public that don't know that a movie's being made. Like there's so many layers to it. It's wild. It's really layered. And I actually came out of there wondering if it, actually did have a really big budget because there were. Yeah. Like, I was just like, like the, you know, the, um, Toronto like building jumping stuff.
Starting point is 00:20:34 Yeah, yeah. Like, and some of the special effects were pretty good. Um, I mean, a little sort of funny, but, uh, yeah, I, I was, I was, and the, I mean, they sort of made fun of it in the movie, but like, all the copyrighted stuff. Like, how did they do that? You know, like, yeah. It was incredible.
Starting point is 00:20:57 Yeah. Yeah, it's very interesting. But now I figured out that, you know, one of the leads and co-creators of the whole thing is Matt Johnson, right? Yes. And so I just figured out that you just like things that are made by people named Matt. you'll you'll see that that that that is consistently true yeah did you see uh did you see the movie blackberry no and i i know that he directed it and i'm eager to see it he directed it and he's like the
Starting point is 00:21:32 comic he's kind of a funny character and that the story of the pretty serious fairly serious movie it's kind of like social network but about blackberry and um yeah so if you get a chance to go back and look at that i i i i read recommend it's interesting to see how because also him directing and acting in that is part of what got the impetus to be able to do more of what wanted with the nirvana thing yeah and it's funny because i like when that came out i sort of was like oh my god another one of these you know like um it but then people at the time were saying it's good and i you know it sort of didn't convince me enough to want to watch
Starting point is 00:22:15 a sort of bio pick of the Blackberry phone. Yeah, but it's it's, you know, it's not like Seinfeld's Pop-Tart movie. It's like really it's like it's, you know, it's really a
Starting point is 00:22:30 kind of an edgy, you know, dark look at the whole Blackberry situation. I'm definitely going to watch it. Well, thanks for all those recommendations and all the side wrecks we ended up finding along the way and we're going to play some games after these words. Starting point is 00:25:44 We are back, and the first game we're going to play today is called Whose Tagline Is It Anyway? I'll say a tagline from a motion picture, from any point in the history of motion pictures, but chances are more like last 30 years or so. And then Johnny will be up first. He gets the guests. what movie thinks that's the tagline for.
Starting point is 00:26:11 If he misses it, then Lisa gets a shot. Lisa misses it, and Matt gets a shot. If all three of you miss it, we just move on to the next one and nobody gets a point. But anytime someone gets a point, the next round will start with the next person. And there is a theme. It's kind of a puzzle, so that might help you to come up with the right answer if you figure out the theme, but also talk about it at your own peril.
Starting point is 00:26:43 Some players like to really discuss what they're thinking when I ask them, and sometimes it ends up helping the other players, so do it however whatever feels comfortable for you. Johnny, are you ready for the first
Starting point is 00:26:58 tagline? I think I am. What movie, Johnny, do you think had the tagline a true zoo story. A true zoo story.
Starting point is 00:27:15 Okay. I'm trying to think of if I remember the name of this movie that had Matt Damon in it. What would you guess it was called? Is it We bought a zoo? Yes, it is. We bought a zoo.
Starting point is 00:27:34 What were the other contenders in your mind? Like what were you thinking It could also be. Let's own a zoo. Let's get a goddamn zoo. That was one. Let's get a zoo. I need a zoo by the end of business on Friday.
Starting point is 00:27:49 Having a zoo's on my bucket list. There's like, I knew it was something hell of dumb. Yeah. Well, well, well, well, well. We bought a zoo is the correct answer. I thought that would be tougher than that. But let's see about this next one. these are you ready yeah scared but ready okay you're already gonna be like i knew the zoo one but what the
Starting point is 00:28:14 fuck is this no i totally had a fully different answer for the zoo one thrilled it didn't go to me what was your guess madagascar that's not a bad guess at all that would be a better line for madagascar than for this movie i don't think the i don't think a word from the title should be in the tagline that's like my personal you know That's just for game purposes, you know, it makes it, it makes it harder. So here we go, Lisa. What movie has the tagline, when ambition meets faith? Oh, my God, ambition, faith.
Starting point is 00:28:51 So like a religious athlete maybe. Ambition and faith. Oh, maybe it's the Whale movie with Drew Barrymore. No, it's not ambitious. Is there a time limit? I need a second. Drew Barrymore was in a way. whale movie? Yeah, she needs to
Starting point is 00:29:08 help the whales escape from under the ice or something. Yes, I remember that now. That's like more of a not miracle, religion and ambition. Wait, say it again. When ambition meets faith. This one's very difficult. I'll be shocked if anybody gets it.
Starting point is 00:29:24 I'm just going to, I don't think it's right. There's no, oh. No. I'm between two football movies. Two the more religious football movies. They're all religious, you know? Yeah. Their dad's like going to church and force them.
Starting point is 00:29:46 They're always together in prayer before the game or whatever. Yeah. Ambition and faith. A religious person achieving a dream. I don't know. Like, I can't even think. I know. It's too tough at this point.
Starting point is 00:30:01 I'm saying, I'm going to say, remember the Titans. That's a great guess. But not the answer I'm looking for. I understood. Matt. I've got three guesses, but I guess I'm going to just go with one. Dogma? That, I like that guess.
Starting point is 00:30:25 I like that guess very much. But what I would really like is the right answer, Johnny. Where religion meets fate? Uh-huh. Faith. Faith? Yeah, F-A-I-I. ATH and it's lowercase.
Starting point is 00:30:42 It's not a person. That'd be like, that'd be really lame. It'd be lame if there's characters named Ambition and Faith. Is it Kirk Cameron's left behind? These are three, these guesses, all three of these guesses are so great that I would give each of you a point,
Starting point is 00:31:01 but then, you know, what's the point of that? Because then you still, your scores are pretty much still, you're still the same amount apart. The movie is called There Will Be Blood. Motherfug. Wow, that's a good, okay. Yeah. Well, makes sense.
Starting point is 00:31:18 Makes sense. Okay, so we go back to you, Lisa. You've got to go first in this next one. And so far, the two titles, so far, if you want to try to pick up on a theme, two titles are, we bought a zoo and there will be blood. And here's your third round. What movie has the tagline? just got funny.
Starting point is 00:31:45 Now, are you sure I'm supposed to start this? Yeah, because all three of you missed the last one. Oh, okay. Johnny got the prior one, so you're next. Great. I feel excited. Okay. I'm going to say the B movie.
Starting point is 00:32:02 That is correct. That is the right answer. I can't believe I brought up the fucking Pop-Tart movie. earlier, knowing that this was going to happen later, but even weirder is all the honey don't talk because this could have been the tagline for
Starting point is 00:32:21 Honey Don't. No, couldn't have. It didn't get funny. It didn't get funny at all. Honey just took Ambien. That gets to go first on this next one. He's your chance to force a three-way tie. Very exciting.
Starting point is 00:32:37 What movie do you think? The first three movies where we bought a zoo, there will be blood and B movie. And then here's your next one, Matt. It's the hottest day of summer. You could do nothing.
Starting point is 00:32:52 You could do something. Or you can dot, dot, dot, dot. Hottest day of summer, you could do nothing, something. Or you can dot, dot, dot, dot. Anything? Hmm. It's the hottest day of summer.
Starting point is 00:33:18 summer. High of this day of summer. You can do nothing. You can do something. Or you can. Dot, dot, dot, dot. Fast times at Ridgemont High? I'd love it if that was it, though.
Starting point is 00:33:38 That'd be so great. I don't think Fast Times at Ridgemont High is something you can do. It's like, or you can, dot, dot, dot, because it's leading into the title. Do you have it figured out, Johnny? I actually think I know this one.
Starting point is 00:33:54 Oh, really? Like, just you've seen the poster and remembered it? I actually had the poster. Yeah, that would help a great deal. So what is it? Here, I'll say the whole thing again, then you finish it. It's the highest day of summer. You could do nothing.
Starting point is 00:34:09 You could do something, or you can... Do the right thing. That's it. Oh, right on. Sorry, Matt. That one is like a, you know, or you don't kind of, kind of thing, but I do like that, oh, you can fast
Starting point is 00:34:25 on my original. Yeah, I'm glad I won with that one in place to do the right thing. Both classics, but for wildly different reasons. So, congratulations to Johnny. He won that game, but just for fun. Liza,
Starting point is 00:34:45 do you want to do one more? Always. Okay. So so far we have We bought a zoo There will be blood B movie and do the right thing And then This one
Starting point is 00:34:59 Goes Silently Behind a door It waits Silently behind the door It waits Okay What were the clues
Starting point is 00:35:15 We bought a zoo There will be blood B movie And do the right thing Okay Did you put emphasis on specific words or is that the way you speak? You notice an unusual emphasis?
Starting point is 00:35:32 I did. I need him again, though. I need him again. I think it's behind the door. Something waits for you. Here, I'll just lay it out more specifically. The first four titles we have, We Will Be Right.
Starting point is 00:35:54 What's this fifth one? on that silent. Oh, back to the future? No. I was going to say something else. What were you going to say, like some sort of monster? Yeah, I was going to say Monster Zank. I was going to say Monster Zank.
Starting point is 00:36:10 Oh, yeah, because you have all those doors. That's a good one. That's a good clue or a good answer. But no, it's, we were just doing this for fun, but it was backdraft. Never heard of that in my life. What is it about a fire? Yes. It's about how, like, you know how they say you should touch a door before you're opening it if there's a fire?
Starting point is 00:36:32 It's because of a backdrop, because if you open the door, you're letting all the fire that's out in the hallway or wherever. You're letting the oxygen hit it, and then it'll just make the room urine explode. So, silently, the backdrop waits behind a door. And Robert De Niro explains the science in. movie and John Travolta just nods his head. Wow. I'm so excited I got to talk about backdraft so much. There was even
Starting point is 00:37:05 used to be, there was a backdraft attraction at Universal Studios. We go into a room and they just you know, Kurt Russell or whoever talks about a backdraft and then then they just make the whole room seem like
Starting point is 00:37:25 caught on fire. That was the whole attraction. It was just watching a fire start. I had a tiebreaker for this game. And again, Johnny is clearly the winner, but I just want to say it out loud just because it's so funny to me. Matt, what movie do you think has the tagline,
Starting point is 00:37:47 A Dinosaur Adventure for the Whole Family? Sounds kind of... Like from another era. I thought you were backdrafts. You were so silent for a second there. Yeah, it's definitely like a Disney-esque, if not specifically Disney thing. Yeah. I'm not that familiar with this movie because it also, it's always felt like two.
Starting point is 00:38:16 Can I hear it one more time? A dinosaur adventure for the whole family. But hole is spelled HOL. No. Really? I'm kidding. Take me down a hole, a rabbit hole.
Starting point is 00:38:36 What's it called? Okay, the land before time? No, but that's a great guess. I think that's probably the more dominant of the family dinosaur adventures. That was the tagline for the movie called We're. back a dinosaur's
Starting point is 00:38:54 story. Never heard of that movie. Isn't that crazy? It's called We're Back. A dinosaur story. I love that there's a and the We're Back there's an exclamation point and then
Starting point is 00:39:07 a dinosaur story. But I've never seen it. Johnny's never heard of it. Congratulations though, Johnny. You won that game and of course that means that you get to go first in our next game that we We will play right after these messages.
Starting point is 00:39:25 We'll be right back. We're back. A dinosaur story. Johnny won the first game. And so he gets to go first in our second game. And it's something that I call Mr. Howard, film director, you may have heard of, former actor, still acts on occasion who does a voiceover.
Starting point is 00:39:49 Ron Howard has made, A lot of bangers. Don't say any, because that's what this game is. I went on The Rotten Tomatoes, and I got a list of the top 10 best-reviewed movies of Mr. Howard's Uvra. Fictional films only, no documentaries. He did a documentary that would be up there, like being one of his top movies if we included documentaries but we're not. It's called Rebuilding Paradise and
Starting point is 00:40:27 I recommend it if you haven't seen it. But that being said fictional movies that are not documentaries his top 10 are sitting here before me. In fact beyond his top 10 because
Starting point is 00:40:45 the man's made I'd say at least 15 to 20 movies that your average movie fan has probably heard of. He's done pretty well for himself. But in this game, you're going to take turns naming movies you think might be on the list. The higher up it is on the list, if it is, the more points you get. And we'll start with Johnny.
Starting point is 00:41:09 And then we go to Matt and then to Lisa, but you'll each get three guesses total. So what other people are guessing and finding out whether or not it's on the list might, you know, jog your mind and make you think of an answer to use on your next turn. But Johnny, start us off with what you think might be the number one film, according to critics, from Ron Howard. Okay, so he's a legend. But I can only think of a handful. right but that's all you need at least three of movies that I know and you might think of more once you start hearing what else he directed because he is one of those directors that like it's a little like wait did you know did so-and-so do that one like there's a couple other directors that kind of hit the same thing he did where they made like each movie they made was kind of a different genre they didn't really stick to one genre yeah this one is one of the ones I can think of I'm not even sure he directed it. So now I'm second guessing.
Starting point is 00:42:24 Did he direct Apollo 13? He did. Okay. Well, that was my only guess that I had. Only guess. I have no idea. I mean, I know who this man is. You'll think of some more.
Starting point is 00:42:36 You'll think of some more. I've got faith in you. Devastating. You couldn't pick one of your other options. It seemed like you had a few, Johnny. I did. That was the one that. All I said was that he directed it.
Starting point is 00:42:46 I wasn't sure. he directed it but if he did it was probably kind of high so that's why i went with that one okay so that's your guess apollo 13 yeah number three on the list okay so pretty good pretty good very strong start gives you uh eight points but now if he can name the number one ron howard movie then matt will score 10 points and and jump to the lead what do you got for us matt A Beautiful Mind? You don't have to, this will form a question on this show. Okay, I'll try that again.
Starting point is 00:43:32 Yeah. Okay. A beautiful mind. That is on the list. And a rather disappointing, you'd think, at one best picture at the Oscars, it's number nine, or excuse me, number 10. I apologize.
Starting point is 00:43:48 Number 10 on the list is a beautiful mind. But that was with 74% positive reviews. So that's telling you how, like, by comparison, Apollo 13 got 92% positive reviews. So we still have number one and two out there for grabs, Lisa. Do you want to just guess a movie that might have been directed by him? Yeah, something's telling me to say the Grinch, the Grinch who stole Chris. something's telling you to say that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:22 Is it just that thing that that that, that, just my spirit? Your spirit is just reaching out and saying, Lisa, we want you to pick a movie that is not in Ron Howard's top 10. Yeah, I guess. It was not well received with the critics. It got, uh, it's got a 50. But he directed it? What's that?
Starting point is 00:44:51 But he directed it? He did, yes. Well, that's huge. Okay. No, that's, no, I think he really should get a big endorphin rush out of, just suddenly realizing that Ron Howard directed that. But yeah, it only got 50%, so it fell way down on the list. For sure.
Starting point is 00:45:09 Not the worst. Not the worst. I'll tell you some of the ones that did worse than Grinch when we, when we conclude the game, if they haven't been mentioned yet. But now we are back to Johnny with an opportunity to put some more points on the board with his second guests. Okay, so I know he directed this one,
Starting point is 00:45:29 but I don't know if it was well received. So, Parenthood. Parenthood was, in fact, pretty damn well received. You know, came a TV series many years later, but also Parenthood's, crazy when you look at the cast because it's all incredible
Starting point is 00:45:50 it's all just people there now you know A-listers if they weren't at the time number four on the list okay yeah okay that's solid yeah that's that's extremely solid
Starting point is 00:46:06 that's the other competitors can you know this isn't a reality show so you don't have to pack your bags but whatever you have to do to prepare to leave this podcast. That'd be so funny. It kicked people out. That's about how this works.
Starting point is 00:46:25 Matt, did you think of another one? Yes. Okay. Night shift. That is so exciting to me that you came out of night shift because I don't think people think of that as like some sort of a critical smash or whatever,
Starting point is 00:46:42 but it is in fact his number one of his entire career. Do you know Night Shift, Lisa? Absolutely not. And I think you knew that by asking me directly. No, I just had a gut feeling, but you do know the leads in Night Shift because it was one of Ron Howard's first movies. It's a comedy. And it was the breakout star, from it was Michael Keaton became known because of that movie. And he co-starred with Henry Winkler and Shelley Long because they were both from television. It was kind of like people from television making a movie and then it turned out.
Starting point is 00:47:26 You know, I did a movie with Michael Keaton. What's that? I did a movie with Michael Keaton. Do you know that? He's in King of Staten Island? No, I was in this little movie called Goodrich. And I got to have a once, I'm in one scene that was mostly cut. but it was with Michael Kian.
Starting point is 00:47:44 Oh, that's cool. Yeah, he was fun, Batman, you know. He's a nice man. My feeling about him is it feels like he's chewing gum even when he isn't. Yeah, he actually came from knee surgery, so he wasn't really walking either, but he was fine. We had a couple really fun interactions, and I'll treasure it forever.
Starting point is 00:48:04 But too shy to talk to him at the premiere, I kind of crumbled under the pressure. Really? You didn't want to be like, oh, remember me? we did that one thing. I just sometimes I crumble, you know, you can't really control your personality sometimes. Or some people might, but.
Starting point is 00:48:20 Yeah, well, you were probably professional on the set. Like, so, you know, you couldn't go up to them later and go, oh, remember me. I'm the one that, you know, did this weird thing. You know, so, like, you don't know what to say. I get it. I absolutely get it. Thanks.
Starting point is 00:48:34 Yeah. Whose turn is it? What's happening? It's my turn. I don't know any movies. did he do the Truman Show? He didn't make the Truman Show. He did?
Starting point is 00:48:49 He did not. Oh. I said he did not. He didn't make it. Wait, what was Matt's last guess? Night shift. Oh, right. Okay.
Starting point is 00:48:59 Yeah, it was a big hero moment. He got number one. He's the winner of the game. Not yet. He's not because John is still ahead. Yeah. Oh, okay. This is very exciting.
Starting point is 00:49:12 All right. I'm going to sneeze. Hang on. I'm allergic to excitement. Lisa? Yes. What's your next guest? Oh, you're giving, okay.
Starting point is 00:49:22 Wait, what, oh, because you just said Grinch, right? No, I said that a long time ago, but he is in a Simpsons episode, and I know that. So that's something to think about. She said Truman Show, I said Truman Show. Oh, right, right, right. I knew something. Truman Show was not a Ron Howard. directed films, directed by...
Starting point is 00:49:45 I know, I feel like he directed some kids somewhere, but I just can't pinpoint it. Then he did what somewhere? Like, I like some kids. Like, is there a lot of kids? I'm seeing kids. In a Ron Howard movie? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:49:58 Well, you know, parenthood, there was quite a few on and around. But I'm looking at some of these other ones and not seeing a big kid turn out. But... this is it Johnny and this is your chance to cement your place
Starting point is 00:50:19 in first by adding yet some more points so I only know two more and I'm not even sure he directed either so I'm the one that's most likely to have been directed by him. I think he directed Frost Nixon.
Starting point is 00:50:45 He did. He did. Oh my God. I was yeah and I had another. I'm not going to say it but I had one more. But yeah, okay Frost Nixon. So he did do that one. He did direct it, yes. And it is number two. Oh shit. Two, three, four? Yeah. You really, yeah, you're really like, you know, Matt shows up, comes out of nowhere with Night Shift, the greatest guess ever. And it still might not be enough.
Starting point is 00:51:18 Is it okay for me to Google Night Shift to look at it? It's so good. Yeah, go ahead. Well, I just don't want anyone thinking there's any, like, you know, shifty behavior happening. Yeah, if it's playing somewhere, it's about the movie is about. Ooh, a night desk clerk. Love that. Yeah, they work overnight in a morgue.
Starting point is 00:51:39 And they decide to turn it into a brothel during the after hours because they meet a friendly prostitute with a heart of gold that brings all her girls over because they don't like their Pimp. It's great. This is real, this thing I'm describing. I think I'm looking at the wrong movie. It says a different name completely. The expression night gift has really been mangled and overused for various reasons. Okay. You don't even know what I was looking at.
Starting point is 00:52:08 It was fucking crazy. This looks different. Yeah, I know this Clint guy was showing up places, too. Oh, yeah. No, Clint Howard's in every Ron Howard movie. Matt, what's your third and final guess? Yeah. I don't know if you can get enough points to surpass Johnny,
Starting point is 00:52:30 but still is trying to make it close. All right. You can do it. I've got two that I'm not 100% that. He directed them, but... Oh, okay. The one I think is more likely is contact. Oh, wait, sorry, contact.
Starting point is 00:52:46 No, he didn't direct contact. I was thinking that, too, though. So that's something... Yeah. What was the other one? Can I guess the other one? Yeah, but it won't count. Armageddon?
Starting point is 00:52:58 No, he didn't do that when he did. Come on. But you'll be, you know, you'll be amazed when I tell you. You'll be really shocked by what the movies he did do. and but congratulations to johnny taylor junior for uh helping to continue leza's losing streak she's never won it's been an honor but she's a great uh competitor i'm sorry we'll get plugs from everybody uh after we do johnny's plugs and then i also tell you the results the other uh ron howard movies that we didn't say but you really did get the top four and a couple others so it was it was a good job
Starting point is 00:53:38 clearing the list. But what would you like to promote, Johnny? When does this go out, Doug? Tonight. Okay, so Friday night, I will be at the Palace Theater in San Francisco for the setup. It's a little speake easy. It's super fun show. And then Saturday I will be at the center of fine arts in Grass Valley, California.
Starting point is 00:54:04 So come see me there. Follow me on the socials at Hipsteracry. and yeah, that's it for now. All right. Thanks for being here. We'll have you back soon as the returning champ. Lisa Trager, what would you like to promote? So I have a Netflix special called Night Owl, and let's watch that. Not night shift, night owl.
Starting point is 00:54:29 Yeah, yeah. And it's pretty cool. And then I'm on the road. I'll be on the road. I actually am home for five weeks. weeks. That's never happened in my fucking life. So I'm really excited. But I'll be in L.A. in Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, La Jolla, I think maybe Austin. Who knows? Everywhere. Where can people see your dates?
Starting point is 00:54:54 Oh, at glitter cheese or Lisa Trager.com. But that's not easy to spell for everyone. So glitter cheese or Lisa Traeger both direct you to my website. Everyone knows how to spell glitter and cheese. Exactly. And people are like, you got to switch it to your name. I go that no one knows it to spell it. You can't trust the public to find you like that. Matt here, Friday in New York. Oh, wait, I want to say one more thing. Okay. So I, this is kind of psychotic, but pinned on my Instagram, I made a scene-for-scene recreation of heated rivalry using images from The Simpsons. And it's 13, like slides long and it's
Starting point is 00:55:35 grids and it took me about like 37 hours four days and it's um probably my it's like one of the things i'm really proud of so if those two interests are something you like it's pinned on my um instagram all right yeah go to glitter cheese and look up uh it's just pinned i actually i unpinned like a career highlight to put that on yeah look at the first pin thing for some some laughter and some heated rivalry uh heated rivalry action uh okay So Friday, Fantasy Life is a film that's Friday at the Angelica, New York, and then the following Friday, all other places. And anything else to add?
Starting point is 00:56:18 Thank you for being here, Matchier. Yeah, I got lost in the, you know, in telling you the story. I wanted to add that. It has a really awesome cast additionally to Amanda P. Alessandro Novolta, Bob Balaban, Judd Hirsch, Holland Taylor, Andrea Martin, and fellow comedian Shang Wang. Oh, my God, that's one of my good friends. Oh, yeah, yeah, he's awesome in it.
Starting point is 00:56:54 Now you've got to see it. Oh, holy shit. Cool. I live right, I live right by the theater. I'll go. Fuck you. And Zasha Mamet plays his girlfriend. Oh.
Starting point is 00:57:03 Ooh. Oh, my again. So, yeah, great cast. And we're going to be in New York, The Angelica, doing Q&A's. Amanda and myself will be doing them all weekend. And then in L.A., we're going to be at the landmark sunset on Thursday. And then at the Burbank, AMC, Friday and Saturday, and the Lendly Royal on Sunday.
Starting point is 00:57:30 Wow. What those are those last ones you said are all in April? Sorry, yeah. Not this weekend, but the following. April 3rd or April 2nd is the landmark one and then, yeah, that weekend. Right on, right on. Wait, what's it called? Well, you say what it's called. Yeah, it's called Fantasy Life.
Starting point is 00:57:51 Thank you. Yeah. Cool. If you're interested in fantasy. Tomorrow at 6. It says tomorrow at 6 p.m. Wow, you're already getting their ticket. Is that real? Wait, in New York.
Starting point is 00:58:05 Yeah, because they, you know. how movies start on Thursday now. We like to say Friday still. Yeah, that's like a preview. Actually, it's very cool. Mayor Mamdani has created Art House Cinema Week in New York. So this is a part of that. And so the tickets are discounted.
Starting point is 00:58:26 Oh. Yeah. Very cool. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. So. Get tickets.
Starting point is 00:58:34 Pretty cool. All right. York. Douglas movies is going to be at the Q West Fest in Key West on April 11th. Are tickets still available? I don't know. You know, Key West is chill like that, but go try to find them if you are in or going to be in Key West on April 11th and all my other stuff is at Douglasmovies.com.
Starting point is 00:58:57 And I'm proud to, happy to report that I think Ron Howard's worst review movie was Hillbilly Elegy. Fuck yeah, fuck that movie. I'm so happy. So happy that one sucked. Yeah, 24% for that one. And then I thought it was funny that
Starting point is 00:59:16 you know, he directed backdraft and that I had that was included we were talking so much about it earlier in the in the show. But that didn't land in the top 10. The top 10 are beautiful miners number 10. The nine was Cinderella man. the boxing film
Starting point is 00:59:36 Russell. Number eight is like I saw that on Christmas with my family. There you go. Perfect for the whole family. Just like that dinosaur adventure. And then number eight,
Starting point is 00:59:49 the classic cocoon. Braun-Hauer directed cocoon. And then... Do you do splash? Well, he is coming up here in a second. Number seven was that drama he did called The Paper. which is fairly unmemorable,
Starting point is 01:00:08 but somehow the critics at the time, I guess, liked it. Then he did a movie called 13 lines that I'm not terribly familiar with, and that was number six, but number five, Johnny, was a splash. That was the other one I had. And then you guys, y'all got all the rest of them, so...
Starting point is 01:00:29 Wait, can I ask a question? Great job, everybody, sure. Which of these showings is the Q&S? Oh. What day is that? You're talking to me? Yeah. The Q&As are all, so yeah, Thursday,
Starting point is 01:00:47 Amanda and I will be. But no, Friday, but no, you're not chatting any other day. No, no, no, no. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday at the Angelica. I know, but there's like, I'm sorry, there's like six showings. Which one are you going to do more Q&A's? I think it's on Thursday, it's, what is it?
Starting point is 01:01:05 It's like seven, I think it's, okay. Seven. And then the one on Friday and Saturday. I think on the Angelica website, it says which one. Okay, cool. It should be in the evening each time, right? Yeah, it's like 7.15, I think. The one on Sunday.
Starting point is 01:01:23 The one on Sunday is, I'm pretty sure at like 430, and Elisandre Novol is going to be at that one. Oh, he's great. Okay, cool, cool, thanks. Sorry. And if you go, Lisa, you have to, you can't push out. You have to go say hi to Matt. Yes.
Starting point is 01:01:42 I might have to go. Hi to Amanda. Oh, my God. I can't go Thursday. I'm trying. I'm going to stock and see which day. But maybe I'll have to go to the daytime. That's so nice.
Starting point is 01:01:50 Thank you. I'm excited. Yeah. Okay, cool. I just went to that theater for the first time. I just saw Pillion. At the Angelica? Yeah, I live by Villages.
Starting point is 01:02:03 I don't know. I just never went there. That's crazy. When I was living there, I went there constantly because they had all the, they have all the art house coolness. Well, that's why you host the game and I lost the game, Doug. That's why. Johnny, you get to, you get up the honors of naming a shithead that I will call a shithead, someone to call a shithead in the sign-off.
Starting point is 01:02:28 What do you think? I mean, it's pretty hack, but, you know, at this point with Hellbelly Elogy, Hellbelly, Hillbelly, Hillbilly. More like Hellbelly, really. J.D. Vance. Okay. That's a good one. Yeah. All right. Thank you, everybody, for being here.
Starting point is 01:02:50 Matthew Shearer, go see his movie, everybody. Lisa Trager, go look at her video of the Simpsons. It's a project. It's a project. It's really impressive. If you've watched it, it's like really impressive what I've done, I would say. Like, I don't even have to be humble. It's like, I don't think anyone else could do that.
Starting point is 01:03:09 Right on, right on. And go see John Ito Jr. The Bay Area, is that a good way to say it? Yeah, I'm in bad this weekend. As always, J.D. Vance is a shithead. Now it's time for Doug to watch another talkie. Eyes of Gold is viewing prowess makes it cocky. No room in it's hearts for you because the love movie.
