Hey, hey, hey everybody. My name is Doug and I love movies. This is Doug Loves Movies recording on Sunday, April 20th. Woohoo, 2025. It's also Easter. And my guests today are Padgett Brewster, Amy Canaan Mann and Ellery Smith. Hello. Hello.

Let's meet everybody individually, alphabetically by first name. She is joining us for the first time an award-winning TV and film writer-director. Her latest is called Audrey's Children. It's Amy Canaan Mann. Hi! Hello! So great to be here. Thank you for doing this. Of course. It's very cool. Tell us about Audrey's Children is currently available on Amazon, Apple, and On Demand. May 6th, yep. Oh, May 6th, May 6th. And tell us about it.

It's a movie about a pediatric oncologist named Dr. Audrey Evans, a real woman, and set in 1969 in Philadelphia. And it's basically a character study about a movie, a movie about a woman thinking essentially. And she in Natalie Dormer is the star, Jimmy Simpson is incredible, Clancy Brown is in it, really amazing cast. And she basically changed, revolutionized how we think about neuroblastoma, which is the most sort of insidious children's cancer. And she invented the Evans staging system for cancer. And she changed the survival rate from about 10% in 1969

to about 80% currently. Wow, that does sound like an amazing person person and Natalie Dormer plays her? Yeah she's incredible. She's from Love Actually right? Natalie Dormer? I don't she's famous for Game of Thrones and she played Anne Bolden. Okay. I liked her from she did a remake of a picnic. She was in a remake of picnic at hanging rock and she was incredible. That's actually the first thing I saw her in. Oh, okay. Cool. Well, that sounds awesome. And thank you for being here. Do you enjoy movie trivia? I do. Okay, good. Because your filmography is like, you know, you're into some pretty heavy, interesting subject matter.

I try. Like it doesn't seem trivial, you know, what you're up to over there. Thank you, I'm gonna take that as a compliment. Yes, of course. And to scare the other guests a little bit, that little piece of information I'll share with them, is that you are the daughter

of the great filmmaker Michael Mann. Yes. So chew on that everybody. This is somebody that knows a thing or two about movies. That feels like a ringer. Well, it's a good lineup today because also joining us as a returning champion is back on the show. She won at our last Dynasty typewriter show in Los Angeles.

It's Ellery Smith. Hey, Ellery. Hi. I will say I feel like my win was because I made one really, really good guess and I think that that shows that like this is a game for everybody. I try to make it for everybody but then it turns out to be just for one person and you were it. So yeah, you got something hit your sweet spot and you took home the title.

And so what have you been doing since then? Have you been studying? You know, that would have been a really good idea, but I did. You imagined studying for this. I used to do games where like there were certain things that you can kind of count on if you listen to the show regularly.

So I'd have guests sometimes like show up having studied what they thought they needed to know. But fortunately, I change it up enough that it cheating doesn't. I think the only way to study is to go through like IMDB lists of random stuff. So I'll do that to like refresh myself. But there's really no good. There's no guessing. No, it's you know, when it comes to movies, there's there's been more than a few. So yeah, it's sort of an exhaustive list. It's hard to know every movie and every person in every movie.

Also joining us is our winner from just last week's show. It's Padgett Brewster. Hey, Padgett. Hey, Doug. Criminal Minds, May something on Paramount Plus. Starts on May 8th. May 8th. Paramount Plus. Yeah, I'm enjoying an eighth today on 420. That's a great way.

Do you think that's the marketing? Is there, we're trying to get stoners to watch by having it on the eighth? Can you tell us, what can you tell us about the new season of Criminal Minds? I know these days you can't, you know, people don't like to, you know, you get yelled at by the company making the show if you give away something, you know, that's not supposed to be out there yet.

No, I mean, this is Criminal Minds. This is the season that is airing May 8th is season 18. Then we're gonna start shooting season 19. Why hasn't everything just been solved? Exactly, exactly. We've caught all the serial killers. The show is about a bunch of FBI profilers at the behavioral analysis unit and we are chasing down serial killers.

But yeah, at the rate we've been going, I guess we've caught, I mean, a couple got away, but it's something like 360 serial killers. And that's not, according to the actual FBI, at most, there are less than 30 serial killers operating in the United States at any any point in time so we've we would have caught over a thousand times but there are more coming up May 8th on Paramount Plus. That number is strangely comforting only 30 silly serial killers. Like there's only 30 people you have to avoid. Out of a country of over 300 million. It's not, there's not a serial killer in every town. That's good odds. It's just mathematically not possible. Yeah. Sometimes they have cooling off

periods and they'll spend years between kills. So yeah, there aren't as many as you would think. Yeah, no, they're cooling off period. That means that that's time where they have the heads in their freezer. Their heads? Or like trophy heads? Victim heads. Yeah, they're cooling off period.

All right, so watch the new season and then the next season and never turn off Paramount Plus, just watch Criminal Minds on a loop. Before we play some games today, it's the part of the show where I ask everybody to recommend one movie, could be any movie from the history of cinema, but preferably something people can access, not something that's impossible to find. But other than that, there's no rules really. We'll start with Ellery, what would you like to recommend this time?

My boyfriend this morning put on Harold and Kumar go to White Castle kind of is a joke but it was so it was it's a classic obviously, but it was so fun. The puppet raccoon like really really got me it was just a really delightful like why I had a lot of fun with it this morning. Is that the one is is Neil Patrick Harrison all of that I don't know he was I think one is in the first one, is Neil Patrick Harris in all of them? Yes, I don't know. He was in this one. Yeah, he was in the first one.

I think he's in maybe all of them. You know, yeah, as himself, but he's like a weird version of himself. Like he's a baby. Yeah, he's a menace. He like stole their car. That part made me laugh. It got a real, it got some big laughs out of me.

And I was like, that's OK. It holds up. I'd love to see that. Yeah, Doogie Howser and also the guy from What's His Name from, you know, SVU. He plays a really little celebrity cameos, especially like being a comedy fan. I'm like, Okay, I think I saw there was Jamie Kennedy was there. I think Bobby Lee was there. There was somebody else. Anthony

Anderson had a cameo. But there was like- Maloney though, he like shows up in movies like that and went out on American Summer and he's absolutely deranged characters because he's stuck playing a serious detective, you know, most of the time. But he makes a meal, he has real fun with it, which I love.

Oh, he is, he desperately wants to do comedy. That in person. He's great at it. We'll tell you that, to your face. He loves it, He loves it. Yeah, he's similar to Jon Hamm in that sense. I think a lot of actors that play a decidedly dramatic role and then play it for years really like to really enjoy doing comedy. All right, Padgett, how can you top our Harold and Kumar? I actually don't know if I've seen that

Actually what I watched last night was and I don't know where it is I bet you know where it is It's a new movie. I believe it's on Netflix and it's called Companion. Oh yeah. Yeah I thought it was really good. It's got kind of a, you know, it's got kind of a black mirror-esque feel to it. I'm pretty sure it's on Hulu but I'm not positive. Is it Hulu? It might be Hulu. No, it's Hulu. It's got to be hulu. Okay. Yeah, and it's called companion and it's kind of a Psychological yeah that lead actress she makes interesting choices and always does a good job. I think she's very Sofie so Sophie Thatcher thinks her name. She's very very good. Yeah, she's excellent. Did you see Harry tick with Hugh Grant? Yes, I did. She's in that. See that's you need to know. Oh my god, I knew I knew where I didn't know where I knew her from. And I didn't go on IMDb.

Yeah. And she's on she's in yellow jackets, too. Okay, great. Yeah, She's working all the time. Yeah, she's got it going. Great. Excellent suggestion. We had the director of the movie on earlier in the year and I saw the movie and I loved it, which is always great.

Cause you know, then you got to talk to the director. And so it's nice that I, I'd say it's my favorite film of the year thus far. Whoa. It's only, it's only April, but it came out in January. All right. Amy, what would you like to recommend? I guess I'll pivot.

And, uh, uh, so I'm in Ohio right now, uh, looking at call. I know for well, actually it's kind of like going back. I grew up in Indiana, so it's a little bit like going back home. But I'm here looking at colleges, and in this tiny little town, they're playing Barry Lyndon. So I think I'm gonna, that felt like a sign. I think I'm gonna go with Barry Lyndon. Oh, that is excellent.

Would you say that's your favorite Kubrick movie? You know, it really, I going to have to say it's definitely the top three. I'm not a real big rancor, but I'm going to say that I just yeah, I love Barry Lynn. I think Barry Lynn is great. I think Ryan O'Neill, Marissa Berenson, I think it's great. Yeah, I haven't seen it in a bit. God, I haven't seen that in ages. Yeah, when I came out when I was a kid, I didn't appreciate it in a bit, you know, when I haven't seen that in ages. Yeah. Yeah, when I came out when I was a kid I didn't appreciate it. But then when I got older I you know, it started getting into Kubrick in general and and it really has grown on me and

Yeah, that's a that's an excellent pick good job Well, just you have to thank the town of Overland. That was my inspiration. That's so crazy. So they just have like a repertory theater and that just happens to be there right now. Yeah, go figure, right? Yeah.

We're gonna show Barry Lyndon. Yeah, I didn't expect people, you don't expect people to get answers for that question just driving around in Ohio. No, I'm sorry. Happy to be here first. I call it bad company because there are a lot of bad companies out there. They seem to be getting worse all the time. And there have been a lot of bad companies portrayed in movies. So in this game, I will name a fictional company from a film. And then you have to name the film or the franchise that that, you know,

the series of films that have, you know, as long as you get that, you don't have to have a, you know, one of the exact titles. You just need to know the franchise for the film. We'll start with Amy and if she misses, Ellery gets a shot and Ellery misses Padgett gets a shot and the first person to get two of these correct is the winner. Are you ready, Amy? Yeah.

Okay. Okay. Do you feel like you know a lot of evil corporations from film? No, but in this last 20 seconds, I've been trying to think of all of the ones I can think of. Right, yeah.

Everybody stops listening to the instructions and just starts trying to come up with, but you know, it's not too much much it's not like a speed game or anything So you have a second to think about it once I tell you What movie do you think has an evil corporation called? Petrox Corporation Oh is that Petrox pet rox is that Petrox? Petrox. Is that the James Cameron one with Sam Worthington?

Oh, all the blue people. Yeah. What's that movie called? Um... Hee hee hee. Damn it. That's the funniest movie title to not be able to think of because I totally sympathize with you that you could go blank on one of the biggest movies of all time. It was one of the biggest movies of all time.

You can do it. You can do it. It's in there. It's in there. It's in your brain. It was the executive. I know. It's like I can see the scene. It's a dumb made It's in your brain was the executive. I know it's like I can see the scene. It's a dumb made up name, you know. Oh my god. I'm a place where the yeah. Right. You're trying to give me hints. It's not working. I mean, truly the biggest movie

I think there's ever been. Avatar Avatar Avatar. Yes, is the name of that movie, but that's not the name of the corporation in Avatar, but that was fun Worth the journey Ellery, what do you think it is? Um, this is such a shot in the dark. Is it the Flintstone movie? Good thing but it isn't. You know, I think that's a reasonable guess. It does seem like. Thank you. But wouldn't the company? Yeah. OK, I see what you're doing, because it has rocks in the name. Because he works out.

He works at a rock quarry. And that's like the type of joke that they would make. Yeah. Every name has some sort of some sort of like stone cave man prehistoric. Yeah. Yeah. Reference. Exactly. Rubble and Flintstone. Yeah. But no, that's not, uh, it's not Petrox is not from the Flintstones movies, not even Flintstones Viva Las Vegas. Uh, Paget, do you know it? I don't know it. And'm so torn. These are difficult, I'm gonna tell you. These are difficult, but the idea is that they should get easier because we do need to have a winner. I'm just gonna say, my gut reaction was it's from the Tremors franchise, but I'm gonna now, having thought about it too much, blow it by saying, I'm gonna say it's the Jurassic Park franchise,

like petroleum. Okay, I see what you're doing, yeah. Well, you know, you're on the right track with petroleum because it's a big oil company that is, an evil guy is involved with it, with a great actor, Gruden and it is King Kong from 1976. Oh yes the Petrox Corporation they pay to go to the island to steal King Kong and bring him to the states and have him step on a lot of people. Damn, that did not sink in.

But as evil corporations go, they are way up there. Let's go back to Amy and see if you recognize this evil corporation and the film that it's from, Zorg Industries. the Zorg Industries. This is like a total fail today. You heard earlier, it's just going to take what happenings, no one answer could be all it takes but okay I think it's the movie but I it's another movie I cannot remember the title of but it's got the little raccoon okay it's got a little raccoon oh he's already in the galaxy yes no that's not it Patty is the perfect god is in the galaxy name Zorg it totally fits that. You definitely got the vibe. I got the vibe. Yeah, okay.

Ellery? Zorg. God. I thought we lost you there. No, I'm taking a real pause. Are we allowed to ask what things, what kind of work the company does? Tell evil is this company. Yeah, what are they? What are they in space work? I

Can't say anything more about the company other than it's zorg industries My god, I don't know Starship troopers Terrific guess not the right answer, but you know these guesses are you know we're circling it Yeah, you're always circling which is good pageant. I know it's not Zod industries, but I'm gonna go with a Superman franchise anyway. This is the case Zod like came to Earth and started a company. Started Zorg.

Like he just started Zorg Industries. Damn it. I can't remember. What is it from, Doug? I mean, this one I wouldn't have necessarily. There's a couple on here that I wouldn't have known offhand, you know, but I, as the host of a game show, I get to, you know, look up the answer and, and then act like I would have known it. But it, that is the company in the fifth element. The, the grigoris sci-fi. If there's something you don't know,

no one else will know it. That should be your mission statement as the host of this show. But these are going to get easier, Pageant, I promise you. We'll see. This next one is not going to be easier. Amy, what movie do you think has a company called By Apostrophe N and then the second word large by and large Man well sounds like a kind of a play on you know a big box store, right? I mean, I respect the pun. I just want to say that People don't say by and large enough these anymore these days. I agree. They probably do in Ohio. When you go out tonight, when you go see Barry Lyndon.

Right. Probably. Yeah, there probably is a by and large store. I'm just at a complete I'm going to say it's probably I think it's probably this is just to help my other contestants. I think it's probably a comedy, to help my other contestants I think it's probably a comedy but I can't give a specific I've gotten the genre for us though well let me give you since you haven't guessed yeah let me give all three of you like kind of a blanket like something that might point you in a better direction in general on these is generally if a movie's about an evil corporation things are generally not good Outside of just how horrible the corporation is

What maybe not a comedy so I was gonna say maybe office space but no oh, I you know I again respect that that's what I thought too. Oh, I, you know, I again respect that as a guess. That's what I thought too. That's a good guess, yeah. That's what I thought. Their company definitely has a name that's very stupid, but I can't think of it offhand. Ellery?

Is it still, it's not still Zwerg, is it? What's the name? Which, can you remind me of the name that we're guessing on the company by and large by and large Honestly, I feel like that it's not an evil company But that I think a comedy is a good guess because that harkens me to like employee of the month You know what I mean? Yeah, but I in large I Really don't know. I don't mind that movie employee of the month. I think it's fun. No, I think it's really fun Or like the one word

J. Bruce no works at the airport, but I really I don't have a guess for this. This is very hard Okay, Padgett I Mean it sounds like I mean it sounds like it might be a cool like I don't know if a non-binary Frankenstein franchise I was gonna say office space too but that's not it okay so it's gotta be something scary. Um, okay. Not scary. Um, okay. Uh, this is. Things are bad. Things are bad. Um, alright.

Things are bad in office space. Uh, alien. Oh, another terrific guess. That's, there's a, you know, they have a fun corporation name in, uh, alien. And, uh, also I should say you've all, these guesses have been so good that you know they still might be a right answer later on but in this particular case it's not Alien this is by and large is featured in the animated dystopian classic Wall-E. Oh classic I love that movie. Oh, classic. I love that movie.

Yeah, there you go. Okay, Amy. Yes. Here's where it starts to get a little easier. Okay. What movie features Tyrell Corporation? I feel like I'm not paying attention to the right things when I'm watching movies now.

I feel like I should be taking notes better. It is an interesting element to just pull out of a movie. Like I understand, like it's, this is not easy. Yeah. I'm going to go with Michael Clayton. That is another terrific guess. You're guessing all movies where I saw the name of the company that is in that movie

and then I just chose not to use it. But you really are hitting the movies with evil companies. Ellery, do you know what Tyrell Corporation is from? This is a, this might be the hardest game I've ever heard on this podcast, Doug. I feel like, you know, I have been smoking weed at the pool all day and I feel like this is not fair to me. I'm starting to even run out of movies where there is a company featured. Why not just repeat one of your earlier guesses? Sure.

That's a hint. of your earlier guesses. Sure. That's a hint. Not, I don't know, not employee of the month. Um, I don't know, maybe like Terminator? You're nailing all of the ones that have evil corpse. It's just not not lining up perfectly. Not that one. I know. Paginosis one. I watch all of them every year. It is the Blade Runner franchise. That is correct. Tyrell Corp. Yeah, there's a guy named Tyrell in the first one. And he's the one that makes all the robots, all the replicants. Do androids dream of electric sheep? I finally got one right Yeah, you did pageants on the board pageant has one point and now maybe you get to go first on this next one

What movie or franchise has a company in it called? Omni-cons Consumer Products or OCP. Yeah, you know me. This has anybody guessed it already? I think maybe I think there's a possibility. Is it? Oh, I don't know. What's it called? Omni. Omni Consumer Products or OCP is what they say a lot in the movie. Is it Avatar? Why not? It should be. Okay, I think I actually might know this one. Okay.

Is it RoboCop? It is RoboCop. Oh, damn it. I was gonna win. You won. You got a point. I told you. I told you how this is gonna go.

But Padgett, you could really, you could win right now if you get this one What movie has a company in it called recall oh Well total recall total recall is correct. I Just watched it and we were talking about Quat Quato you know Quato is the the the The leader of the resistance on Mars. Yeah. Yeah Quato Quato he's almost Schwarzenegger in that first one his head blows up at the end. Oh When they come out would not go back to normal. No, no, no, no, no, the cellular damage would have been unsurvivable. His eyeballs come out of his face. Yeah, the

tongue and the love that movie. Just to give you an example of how much easier these get, the next one, the final one was going to be a company called Bifco. From Back to the Future? From Back to the Future. In part two, Bif is rich, so he has a company called Bifco. And then if we had needed one more, in the case of a tie, the last and easiest one is Injun, which is the previously guessed Jurassic Park. Oh, I was waiting for Skynet. Oh yeah, that's another good one. I mean, this game is deep. You came up with so many, all three of you came up

with so many good ones that I just didn't pick to use this time, but I'll play that game again and make some more people suffer at a later date. But we're gonna take a break now and come back. And it's, you know, no big deal. I mean, it's, you know, good for Padgett that she won, but it just means she gets to go first in our next and final game.

I, this very day, this morning, typed a word into the search engine on IMDB Internet Movie Database and then I wrote down the top 10 movies with that word in the title. The three of you are going to take turns guessing movies with that word in the title and the higher up on this list if it makes it into the top 10 you get points and number one is worth 10 points and number 10 is worth one point. You're and the higher up on this list, if it makes it into the top 10, you get points, and number 1 is worth 10 points, and number 10 is worth 1 point.

You're each going to get 3 guesses. We'll go in this order. It'll go Paget, Ellery, Amy, Paget, Ellery, Amy. For 3 rounds, movies with this one particular word in the title. If you can't think of one, this is another game where you can just go ahead and guess a title that sounds like it should exist that has that word in it. Sometimes that genuinely works. The word, that's the most important thing to tell you at this point, is you know this is coming out on the day after 420 is when people will be hearing this for the first time, but in honor of 420, which I am currently celebrating, the word is high.

It's not very often actually referring to being high when the word high is in the title. There's lots of reasons for it to appear. Like I said, I wrote down the top 10. You wanna get that number one movie with the word high in it. Paget gets the first guess. What do you think it is? Oh my God, I've completely blanked.

Wait, wait. You can't think of any movie that has the word high in it. Stop it, of course I can't think of any movie that has the word high in it. Stop it. Of course I can. Yeah, you can. Um, uh, um, what, what, what happened to me? It might help when you start hearing other guesses, you know, it might trigger something.

Um, okay, so I'm trying to think of what would be the highest rated high. I'm just going to say Rocky Mountain High. That's not even probably a movie. I forgot the name of the damn movie that everyone's seen. Rocky Mountain High. Yeah, that's a Bob Denver song that was probably turned into like a TV movie or some shit. That doesn't get me any points.

But it doesn't get you anything, but you'll, you can pick up some points on your next two guesses. Now we, now it's your next two guesses. Ah. Now it's Ellery's turn. OK. I'm going to guess high fidelity. Number one on the list is not Ellery. Damn it.

Good job. Thank you. Oh. You were circling it, and I was like, I hope. I don't let her find it. Is that what you were trying to think of, Tadget? No. I'm still trying to think of what I was trying to think of.

All right, so it's still my whatever you were trying to come up with might come to you. But yeah, High Fidelity with John Cusack and a lady whose name I can't pronounce. K'chell something. K'chell Ibn. Well, that was where Jack Black burst on the scene from High Fidelity. Yeah, he had a whole song that he sang that was really soulful and really got people's attention. But, you know, he's a John Cusack and Tim Robbins regular. Like, he's in several of the movies those guys do have done.

Okay, Amy, have you thought of one? I have. What do you got? Fast Times at Rainbow. Damn it, that's the one I finally got. I finally remembered it and you got me. Oh. Oh no.

It is number seven on the list. So that is worth some points. Okay. Yes, it's worth four points. You're on the board. Still anybody's game, Padgett. I can't think of anything. But that's it.

I would think that would help a little bit that now you kind of know a genre that might use that word I do you're right. Okay. Okay. Okay. It's a superhero high school movie. It's very fun. It has Kate Panabaker in it. Yeah, 2005. And yeah, Kurt Russell plays a superhero who his kid is not as good at being a superhero. Oh my god. He's had a high school full of superheroes so it's really cute. Fun movie.

I think, weirdly, my go-to was the last line from It's a Wonderful Life, where the little kid doesn't she say every time a bell rings and angel gets its wings. That's the last line?

Like he's still, like things aren't great other than that his family would have missed him. No, they're great, Doug. You have to watch the movie again. The whole town rallies around him and brings him the money that he lost all their money. But he still doesn't have a job and it's still the depression. Oh my God, you. I think you gotta rewatch the film.

Oh my God, Doug. I think you gotta check it out again. I think that's part of my problem is that the movie is so heavy for so long, like he's so close to just killing himself. Well, it is a scathing critique of capitalism. Yes. True, true. And the banking system.

And the banking system, right? And at the end, it's all about everybody should be, you know, from each according to his, to each according to his needs, from each according to his abilities. I love that. I love that lesson any time of year. Right, exactly. Plus angels. Since it's April doesn't mean we can't.
