Starting point is 00:00:00 Doug hates candy wrappers screaming baby sticky seeds with 50 as a pop more kernels in his teeth. There's still not one that he won't see because Doug loves movies. Hey, hey, hey, everybody. My name is Doug and I love movies. This is Doug loves movies recording on Sunday afternoon, August 24th, 2025. Let me just start out with a quick Doug. Douglowe's movies returns to the Grammarcy Theater in New York City on Monday, September 8th. Joining me today are two oldbies and one newbie, and this newbie might not happen.
Starting point is 00:00:48 For some reason, I have not heard back from the third guest I had book for today. So, but for now, let's meet two of my favorite guests, especially compared to the third guest. You are number one and two of my hearts today. It's Padgett, Brewster, and Chad Opitz. Hello. Hello, Doug. So there won't be much suspense for the listener if they looked at the listing, because we're not going to say the name of that third person, you know, unless they miraculously should. show up during the hour but
Starting point is 00:01:29 all I'll say is that we will try to reschedule and you know there's no reason for anybody to be disappointed let's meet the guests who did show up the first
Starting point is 00:01:46 responders if you will and let's meet them individually alphabetically by first name he has a monthly show in Burbank, California. It's Chad Opitz.
Starting point is 00:02:06 Yay! Hello, Doug. How you doing? Hey, this show in Burbank, tell us about it, Stud. Oh, yeah, man. It's every first Thursday at the Rogue-like Tavern called The Ronkee. Me and my very good friend, Nick Stargoo, run it. And it's like more of a variety music. We encourage
Starting point is 00:02:24 sketches and characters stuff like that my friend Nick is an amazing musical comedian and we do a lot of like songs and stuff during the show so it's more skewed towards that sort of stuff and not traditional stand-up generally a lot of fun
Starting point is 00:02:40 James Adomian's headlining the next one oh that's cool well I saw you know I saw the flyer for it and the you know the description sounded like pretty much like what you just said and I thought well that's why he has asked me to do it yet because it's more of a variety show yes and i just talked there like a boring
Starting point is 00:03:00 lump of boring but that being said i'd be i'd be happy to do it any time but i have a follow-up question yes and that is there's a place called rogue-like tavern that's right the what rogue-like is one word yes sir it's it's a long one and it's also like wow Why is it like a rogue? Like, I don't get... Where does his name come from, you think? I think they skew... I mean, you can't really tell just being in the bar,
Starting point is 00:03:33 but they do skew... Like, the events that they book are very skewed towards, like... God, how do I put this nice? Like, nerds. It's like Renaissance fairs type of stuff. As I say, Renfair, kind of, but inside. Yes.
Starting point is 00:03:49 And the interior, you couldn't tell just being in there, but they do skew towards that demographic, generally. Well, I mean, the word tavern kind of sells that, you know? Yeah. I just think roguelike is just interesting. I've never seen those two words put together into one word and then also the name of something. Uh-huh.
Starting point is 00:04:06 Yeah, it's very, very unique. How long do you think they've been there in Burbank? Oh, no. You know what? I did a show there with Henry Phillips about a month ago, and he brought this up during his set that it used to be a karaoke, like a strictly, they still do karaoke there, but it used to be like a karaoke bar that a lot of like former
Starting point is 00:04:27 porn stars went to and like did you literally call it porn star karaoke I guess I don't know but like that was like a selling point for the karaoke was like oh it's a bunch of former adult stars doing it. I would love to have seen that. Yeah I think
Starting point is 00:04:43 I definitely heard of that and then probably didn't go because it was in Burbank but yeah that's definitely a thing so it definitely and it It wasn't called rogue-like tavern. No, I wish I could remember what it used to be called. So this whole rogue situation is newish.
Starting point is 00:05:01 Yes, within the last few years, I think. Yeah, so, but you're there the first Thursday of every month. Yeah, so the next one is September 4th. We got James Adomian. This guy who goes by the name TV head. He comes out with a fucking TV on his head, and he's got a mic built into the TV. He's amplified already. It's pretty, I've seen him once.
Starting point is 00:05:21 It's very funny. I love it. I absolutely love it. It does sound better than, then it sounds even better than porn star karaoke. That's right. If you can believe it. Well,
Starting point is 00:05:31 they had to, you know, take it up a few notches. Mm-hmm. She is the star. Well. Of a motion picture. Oh. Called.
Starting point is 00:05:40 One? Let's talk about sex. Ah, you bum. You bum. You bum. Paget Brewster. That's not, that's not fair. That's my first movie.
Starting point is 00:05:49 That's not fair. That's what I was going to ask you. 1998 first movie first movie baby not available to be viewed anywhere does that please you or displease you i don't want to insult anyone who put their blunt sweat and tears into the masterpiece known as let's talk about sex i wish the world could revel in its and it's genius that might have been like you know that's a very pioneer in terms of uh i think since then we've got a lot of movies where the title is a pop song that people sort of recognize and the movie
Starting point is 00:06:25 may or may not have anything to do with No, they didn't get the rights to the song even. Yeah, right? They just take the expression and run with it. Can I say something quickly that I just found out today that shocks me? Please. The original 1917 Cleopatra with Theta Barra, gone.
Starting point is 00:06:44 Gone. Nowhere. No one can see it at all. The last negatives were like destroyed in the late 30s. in the 30s? The silent film Cleopatra is unviewable. You can't find it.
Starting point is 00:06:58 You can't watch it. No one made a transfer. There are photographs, and there are a couple of seconds of footage. Right. But the movie's gone. Let's not have that happen with Let's talk about sex. Yeah. How can we? Is that alive? We can't let that happen.
Starting point is 00:07:14 We need to take to the streets. Make sure these masterpieces Get this movie. Let's continue talking about sex. Well, this is a controversial film pageant, and I'm excited to talk to you about this. Oh? To see if you could shine any light on it.
Starting point is 00:07:34 It was going to be at one point rated, you know, the ratings board decided that it was an NC17, which, of course, at that time was death for a movie. It was X. You can't put out a NC17. What movie are you talking about? Let's talk about sex. No, it was never going to be NC17.
Starting point is 00:07:55 That's what, I'm not saying that's what they intended for it to be. I'm saying that the director of the movie, who also stars in it and wrote it. Troy Beyerberg. Yeah, she says, this is from her mouth that the initial cut of the movie got NC17 and that they told her what she had to cut to get an R. and well then they shot some stuff i wasn't in because it was not that sexy this is the shocking thing about it is there was a scene that managed to get the ratings board which are a bunch of you know housewives basically uh it got these ladies all worked up uh there's a scene where someone
Starting point is 00:08:39 who's not even naked and i'm guessing it's not you uh basically shows how to do uh or sex on a woman using a peach. Oh, I forgot about that. That wouldn't be NC-S. It wasn't me, but that shouldn't be NC-17 either. No, it should, it. It shouldn't. Okay, okay. But it probably was
Starting point is 00:09:02 because of, you know... There was that. That scene was, I think they did, they did shoot that. Yeah, no, and it was then therefore cut just to get the rating, which, you know, again, it was probably not, there wasn't a major studio behind the movie, right?
Starting point is 00:09:18 No, but So that's it The ratings board As Kevin Smith discovered with clerks And then pretty much Everything he's made since Is when you make an independent movie
Starting point is 00:09:28 You don't have You don't have Spielberg Or 20th century Foxx or Hey, just give it an R already You know The process is really painstaking and frustrating And as
Starting point is 00:09:39 Troy herself said It You know It is destroying her artistry Wow It would have been amazing if they kept that it was like if it's they specifically stated like rated NC17 for explicit
Starting point is 00:09:53 peaches for peach yeah yeah sell that's the selling point yeah well i mean it would be huge in georgia that's right it was purchased by new line it was and i guess they've decided to bury it in the vault is new line even still a company i think it is i think it is Aren't they want to play Warner Brothers, man? Yeah, they're folded into something for sure. But that's the company that, you know, they say that's the house that Freddie built because the Nightmare and Elm Street movies were new line.
Starting point is 00:10:29 Oh, yeah. And that sort of saved them. But they've also, over the years, had some amazing stuff like Boogie Nights was New Line. Oh. And the Lord of the Rings movies. Yes. Wow.
Starting point is 00:10:41 We're huge. Very big. Very, very big. All right. Congratulations, Paget, on everything you've done since. Let's talk about. Yeah. Of course, we could say, we can remind everybody,
Starting point is 00:10:57 the criminal lines is available on Paramount Plus. Yeah. Yeah, I got a job. Yeah. Currently for another 14 days. Oh, really? Yeah, we finish. Yeah, we finish.
Starting point is 00:11:13 But it's not, they didn't, they're not, there's no talk of it being the final season. no no we don't know we don't know if we'll be picked up again but right but season 19 yeah well knock wood i don't know we'll see yeah right yeah you just got to wait and see but i i would think uh i think it would be i think you're in good shape you that the show doesn't say anything bad about the president does it no no why would we do that at the fbi i no no reason no All right, before we play some games today, I would like to ask each of you. This is exciting. We have a little bit more breathing room because, you know, we rarely have a two-guests show.
Starting point is 00:11:58 So I ask all my guests each week to recommend one movie. So we'll start with you, Chad. What would you like to recommend today? Man, I just saw weapons. You always keep it tight. You always recommend something recent. that people themselves can run out and see if they're inspired by your recommendation? I try to.
Starting point is 00:12:22 So is that yours, is that it, weapons? Yeah. I feel like you've already, did you recommend weapons a couple weeks ago or is that, that's my I don't think so. Somebody else did. I think we were just talking in the green room maybe. I don't think I mentioned it. I confused podcasting in real life all the time.
Starting point is 00:12:40 Yeah. Okay, so, but we're a little deeper in, I think when somebody mentioned, earlier we were like really tried to you know not reveal much about it let's we'll use page it as a sounding board here no I haven't seen it well that's why I'm going to ask you oh thank you before we talk about it yes okay so you haven't seen it so that's but you do
Starting point is 00:13:02 want to see it yes I do now Doug you know I love you more than I love movies so I don't go to the movies that much I watch a lot of them at home but the only thing I've seen in the theater lately was naked gun oh that was great Which I'm sure a bunch of people have recommended. Absolutely, but you, you know, it doesn't have to be, you don't have to see movies in the theater. I know, but I'm trying to impress you that I actually went to a theater. I see, I see.
Starting point is 00:13:30 But weapons, you know. That's still in the theater. Yeah, but it'll be, you can watch it at home probably in like four weeks. That's what I'm waiting for. Or sooner if you're willing to spend that initial, you know, 20 bucks or whatever they're trying. Yeah, yeah. I mean, Tony bucks for you and your man to watch a movie is still cheaper than going out to the movies. Exactly. And I cook all the food.
Starting point is 00:13:55 Ooh. You know what I mean? Yeah. I'm looking forward to seeing weapons. And I did like Naked Gun. And I thought it was some of the jokes didn't hit. But a lot of them did. And I just thought it was a really, I thought it was really earnest and kind of sweet and funny and sophomoreic and dumb but smart.
Starting point is 00:14:13 I just thought it was, you know, there's no political message. There's no, we can't make a joke. There's no. It just was like, it just was a goofy, almost like an old school airplane, you know, make a gun movie. And I was so charmed. And I thought everyone in it was great. I just was really impressed. I thought it was just uplifting.
Starting point is 00:14:36 I did. What do you think? Did you see it in a crowded theater? Yeah, it was pretty crowded. It was nice. I saw it with a, it was busy. I saw it on a Saturday night, but like, the crowd was a bunch of deadbeats who didn't, didn't, like, seem to be getting it. Oh, that sucks.
Starting point is 00:14:54 I'm sorry. But, you know, I still can acknowledge that, you know, they did a great job of sort of keeping the vibe of the old movies, the old movies and TV show, but also, you know, kind of tweaking it a little bit. but you know I'm so happy that everybody loves it like that's that's the most important thing to come out of it's it I would like there to be more movies it's got a lot of positive buzz but I think you're I'll be interested to see as time goes on like like if they'll make another one of these or anything like it because they kind of you know the sort of parody movie sort of stop being a thing for a while yeah you know like I don't know where it died out like superhero movie or something like that but um but you know it was a really kind of uh you had
Starting point is 00:15:46 two or three of them a year for a while there and uh now finally naked gun and and people went went for it so uh i'm hoping it encourages comedy in general because comedy's having a hard time uh in the cinema because they're usually not big you know there's not explosions and the kind of spectacle that people these days it seems like people really want spectacle to justify going to see something in a theater yeah you know but i still love seeing like just a small indie movie uh in the theater and uh and then the big movies too i saw you know since there's three the since there's only two guests today i'll go ahead and throw in a recommendation um and i think somebody else recommended it one of the previous weeks but i'll just say that
Starting point is 00:16:36 this new James Gunn, you heard of him, Padgett, this new James Gunn movie, Superman. I've seen it twice in the theater. Oh, you loved it. I saw it twice in the theater. Oh, that's great. Loved it is, it's interesting, because I think the reason I saw it the second time
Starting point is 00:16:56 was because I liked it a lot, but I was just like, I just want to see it all, take it all in again one more time. And, you know, then to see it. how I feel about it and I and I liked it even more the second time that's great because it's really it does some there's some interesting things going on with it you saw it Chad I did yeah it's fun you like it the dog the dog factor is huge the dog is huge the dog is such a big like that is such a genius move on his part because the trouble with making Superman like especially
Starting point is 00:17:32 the first in a new series of Superman is that he's wisely skipped all the shit with him coming from Krypton and the story just starts after he's been on earth for like three years and he's settled in his Clark Kent and is very close with Lois et cetera and so it starts from there so that's the first smart thing James Gunn did was like not make us sit through the whole you know boy growing up in Kansas or wherever the fuck and then so it's not that he's been on earth for three years he's been in Gotham city for three yeah he's been For three years working at the daily planet. So we know he lives in Gotham and it's none of the origin story.
Starting point is 00:18:13 I don't need to see an origin story. We're spending more time on it now than the movie does. It does these, he prints these words out at the beginning saying he came from Krypton. He was raised by farmers. He moved to Gotham. Boom. Let's go. Let's start.
Starting point is 00:18:28 Economy. Yeah. It's genius. It gets you right there. And so that's enjoyable. and the movie doesn't have to be two and a half hours long. It's only two hours. But the other thing that Chad already mentioned is
Starting point is 00:18:42 it's just genius to bring, you know, the dog into it, to bring a super dog into it. Because that's just an element. No Superman movie has ever had, especially to the degree that this one does. But that was original to the comic, right? Yeah, it's a real thing. Yeah, great.
Starting point is 00:18:58 But it's James Gunn's dog. It's like a CGI version of James Gunn's actual dog. everybody's adorable and but it's also funny that you know how dogs are they'll they'll step on you and do things to you because they you know they don't they don't realize their own strength or that you feel pain and uh this is a dog that's got for lack of a better term superhuman strength but is also a playful dog so he jumps up on you and knocks you 10 feet back it's so adorable and fun. I can't wait.
Starting point is 00:19:34 And he's going to get his own movie eventually, spoiler. Yeah, they kind of have to do that by now after that movie. Yeah. Well, he's going to be, you know, he's clearly going to be in a supergirl, which I think is the next DC movie coming out. But that's not coming out to like next summer. Is that cast? Oh, yeah, it's done.
Starting point is 00:19:58 Who is a super girl? It's a, um, She's from that, she was just in that show Sirens and she was in the Game of Thrones sequel. Was she in White Lotus? Game of Dragons. No, she's never White Lotus. Her name's, her last name. Emily Elcock, is that it, Chad?
Starting point is 00:20:23 I don't know. She was in Sirens. Something's, Emily Cock. She was like. She's the one that worked for. The sister. Yeah, she's, yeah, she's really good. That's a great casting.
Starting point is 00:20:34 Yeah, she's Supergirl. Great. And, you know, that's, I don't want to spoil Superman for people, but it's already on, or very close to being on streaming. Yeah, it's not there yet. I'll talk about it in another, like, week or two. Yeah, I haven't seen it yet. But that's my, that's my recommendation.
Starting point is 00:20:56 And so, Chad, are you sticking with weapons or did you sound kind of like you were, like, go to trail off into something else. You know, I'm going to throw, I'm going to say Eddington. I really like Eddington a lot. Really? Yeah. Why? I'm switching it.
Starting point is 00:21:11 Why? What's wrong? Do you know what Eddington is, Padgett? I feel like I wrote it down in my book, but I can't remember what this. Like, I wrote it down, like, this is something I want to watch, but I don't remember what it is. It's a new Ariaster that stars River, I mean, River. Leave Phoenix, aka a watch. His name is Lee.
Starting point is 00:21:33 Leaf is given name is Leaf. All the kids had those names. Summer River, Leaf and a ball of dirt. Rain. Ball of Dirt, Phoenix was the first one
Starting point is 00:21:47 to change their name to something different. Rain, you're right. Rain. I couldn't think of it. Rain, River. Phoenix. Leaf. I think there were a few more.
Starting point is 00:22:02 They were in a cult. Yeah. No, no, no, I think there were six or seven kids. Yeah, they had a lot of kids. It might be 11. They were raised. 11? It was some wacky thing.
Starting point is 00:22:12 They had a very strange upbringing. Yes. Yeah, it was like a hippie commune situation. And of course, all their, the children are all gorgeous. Yeah, but they'd all, the whole family would like skinny dip together when the kids are well into their teens. They're jumping around naked with their parents. Yeah, yeah. Brutal.
Starting point is 00:22:32 Brutal. Brutal. And finally, Joaquin was, Leaf Me Alone. I don't want to be called Leaf anymore. I didn't know that.
Starting point is 00:22:44 Yeah, as a kid actor, he was in some stuff, like he was in Space Camp. And... Did you in Space Camp? Yeah, yeah. Oh, shit. The third guest just texted me.
Starting point is 00:22:57 Oh, one more. that he's available now. This son of a bitch. At this point, I feel like it's too late because now we're, we'll be running long if we, I'll get him to do it some other time.
Starting point is 00:23:11 Do you want to do, do you want to do winner takes all? We just do one game? No, that's all right. Okay, book him another time while we beat the pants off each other. Chad and I are,
Starting point is 00:23:20 Mano-O-Mano, it's going to happen. Oh, my goodness. All right. I just have to type something to him really quick. Let's go to a commercial break. We'll be right back. Today's episode is brought to in part by Shopify.

Starting point is 00:26:38 show. We are back. And to recap what we were talking about when we went to break. I recommended Superman and Padgett recommended The Naked Gun I also liked it's just The Naked Gun They didn't mess around with adding some dumb subtitle or you know Suggesting that it was a reboot or anything
Starting point is 00:27:04 And then we were talking about Eddington And It was on Padgett's list What Why Chad could you Venture a guess as to why it's gotten Such a mixed response like why
Starting point is 00:27:18 a lot of people dislike it because even when you said it you're like, I like Dennington. Like you know there's people out there that didn't. Oh, yeah. I think part of it is because people love there to be very clear sides chosen with things.
Starting point is 00:27:34 And like if you present a thing that's like, no, here's bad aspects of things that people take very, very seriously. They're going to let me like, I don't want to. They don't want to take the time to think about it. And this is a movie I really thought about a lot And I continue to think about
Starting point is 00:27:51 And I was like man, that was really Really well done I thought it was really well directed Acting's great I initially saw the trailer And I didn't have any interest in it But then when I saw it I was like God damn I'm glad I saw that
Starting point is 00:28:01 That was really I thought it was really great It's one of those movies I think I'll be revisiting Well I'm very much on the fence Because I've had you know I personally have not You know loved
Starting point is 00:28:14 I respect Ariasters' work but like those first two movies were just a little too horrifying and gross to me and then I never saw the Bo as Afraid heard very mixed things about that I don't like how his movies are getting longer and longer like I think one thing he could do is go the other way this one is shorter than Bo is afraid and Bo is afraid is by far his like hardest one to watch in terms of it does go on for a long time I think this one's his most accessible honestly oh Okay. Well, it's got a, you know, it's got a terrific cast, and, you know, I'm definitely interested in it, and now I assume if it's not available at home, it will be very soon, because it did not really go over in theaters. But let's play some games.
Starting point is 00:29:07 Yeah, yeah. We have two very fierce competitors, and you each have an even better chance today of walking away. a champion. I believe, in fact, I think Padgett, part of the reason you're here today is because the last time you were on, you were the winner. Yes.
Starting point is 00:29:26 Yeah, so you're defending your title today. Defending. Against a man who's won many times. And lost many times as well. Yeah. Well, we're starting with a really tough game, so don't take it, you know, don't take it personally. All right.
Starting point is 00:29:42 It's called, whose tagline is it anyway? Uh-oh. Padgett. Uh-oh, right away. I'll say a tagline from a motion picture, you know, something that was on the poster or in the trailer. Ah.
Starting point is 00:29:55 And you have to guess the movie. And the only clue that you get is an ongoing clue because there's a theme. There's a, all the movies are tied together in some way. How do you do it? This first one, obviously, would be the toughest because you can't smell a theme yet when it's only the first. first one but chad alphabetically you're up first what movie do you think has the tagline this ain't just rock and roll dot dot dot this ain't just rock and roll yeah this game also
Starting point is 00:30:40 it kind of highlights how bad taglines are just rock and roll Do you know the tagline for Let's Talk About Sex, Padgett? Is it, this ain't just coffin hole? I don't know what it is, yeah. You think your father's sex movie. God, I hope not. H.G. a peach is probably what it said. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:05 That would be pretty good. I don't even know if they're. Lead actress. Did you have equal, was your part as big as the other two ladies on the poster? Yeah, there were three of us. All three of us were on the poster. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:19 All right. What's your guest, Chad? This ain't just rock and roll. I don't think it's going to be right. I'm going to say rock of ages. I love that guess. It's a perfectly good guess. It's not the right answer.
Starting point is 00:31:31 Me? Me? Yeah, Padgett. What do you think? Metalheads? Oh, that's another great answer. See, you're both great at this. Shoot.
Starting point is 00:31:40 But that's how hard it is. That's the tagline for, and they have other alternative taglines that are much funnier or even better at describing the movie, because that's the tagline for this is spinal tap.
Starting point is 00:31:55 I was going to, I thought there's no way the people who made, there's no way Rob Reiner went with that. No way, right? It's not funny at all. I was like, there's no way. My brain said spinal tap, and I thought that's not possible. But you could see the film studio pushing for,
Starting point is 00:32:11 but you've got to let people know that it's not really just a rock and roll concert movie and they also don't want to the the ones that the other ones that they came up with are clever if you've seen the movie because like one of them is crank it up to 11 yeah it's like well that's a joke that happens at the very end of the goddamn movie right you know are pretty far into it I think anyway listen to my brain but you know what brains don't work in this game I'm asking you to pick a title out of all the movies ever made you're right but now you know there might be some sort of theme going on i know this is a spinal tap i'm ready
Starting point is 00:32:52 dad here goes round two okay what movie had the terrible tagline the most dangerous combination since nitro and glycerin what yeah okay yeah that's real dangerous combination since nitro and glycerin. What the hell? Okay, then the first movie was this is Spinal Tap. Oh, don't even try to find the theme yet, man. I'm trying.
Starting point is 00:33:24 Too early, man. I'm trying to psych him out. Go back, man. Now I'm thinking like a buddy movie for some reason. Game over, man. God damn. This isn't it I'm going to say lethal weapon
Starting point is 00:33:40 No but you know That came to my mind too though Don't hate it yeah Padgett What else came to mind I got it I mean Lethal weapon came to mind But then I thought Beverly Hills cop
Starting point is 00:33:54 Oh Because it's him and what Him and Judge Reinhold Axel Oh yeah Judge Reinhold drop Yes Axel and Rosewood
Starting point is 00:34:05 Were the center combination in Baville's Cop. Kelly Rosewood. Rosewood. No, but you're, you know, you're ballparking at both of you, and I appreciate it. That's from the motion picture called the Blues Brothers. Oh, okay. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:34:24 All right. Chad, back to you. That's an insane tagline for the Blues Brothers. Yeah, it is. So stupid. Though that's another one that does not feel like it came from anybody involved in the making of that movie. Would not have guessed that. Because the other one is we're on a mission from God, but that's just a quote from the movie.
Starting point is 00:34:40 Yeah, it gives it away. Oh, I would have thought. Yeah, that would have been, well, all right. Yeah, it would have been easy. Yeah. We're not here for easy. Here you go, Chad. Okay.
Starting point is 00:34:50 Rock and roll all night, period. Party every day, period. Rock and roll all night, party every day. Yeah. Okay, I'm going to say Just say it Detroit Rock City That's it, yes
Starting point is 00:35:14 Is it? Good job Oh wow Would you've gotten that pageant? Nope I was trying to think of what movie Kiss was in Yeah, it's called Detroit Rock City Are they in that are in that? It's a bunch of kids going to see Kiss
Starting point is 00:35:30 I didn't know that And so that was one of the taglines is actually, you know, reasonably clever. That's great. Use of the, the kiss lyric. All right. Good job, Chad. I like to breaking it up with the periods, like making it a calm statement.
Starting point is 00:35:47 Yeah. Yeah. This is very, very deliberate, like, yes, we're going to rock and we're going to party. Not exclamation points, just periods. Exactly. All right, Padget, you get to go first on this next. The greatest rock and. role comedy
Starting point is 00:36:06 adventure another terrible tagline the greatest rock and roll comedy adventure adventure Tommy
Starting point is 00:36:18 Tommy I can't no I think I know what the theme is no I'm thinking of that movie with the who and Tina Turner now yeah that's not correct the greatest rock and roll comedy movie metalheads I don't know what it is what is that do you know it
Starting point is 00:36:41 I don't what's your guess what the hell did pop to mind for some reason I thought get them to the Greek I don't know that's not it but it's not a terrible guess though
Starting point is 00:36:54 you're both guessing just fine these are really tough it's the debut of the Beatles on screen called a Hard Day's Night. I wouldn't have guessed that either.
Starting point is 00:37:08 Yeah, yeah, yeah. All right, Padgett. You could tie it up if you get this one. And I like to think they get a little easier as we go along, but we'll see. Don't softball me. Come on. What movie?
Starting point is 00:37:22 This is the toughest one of them all. What movie has the tagline? A splendid time is guaranteed for all. to tie it up to tie it up tell us anything about the movie that you can think of I'm just trying to think on the theme
Starting point is 00:37:56 I have to go with I have to go with the Rose but that Miller What is it? Who is it? Chad, do you know? I'm, okay, just from the phrasing, I'm guessing it's a British thing. I don't know why. Splendid. I'm like, that's a British. I'm going to guess Rocket Man. Oh, that's a good guess.
Starting point is 00:38:18 But what both of you didn't get, and there's no reason for you to necessarily have gotten it, is that is another song lyric. and a splendid time is guaranteed for all is in the Beatles It's a Beatles song But you already said a hard day's night So what
Starting point is 00:38:37 Sargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club band Was there a movie? Called Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club band starring the Bee Gees And Peter Frampton Oh my God And the Beatles aren't even in it? No
Starting point is 00:38:52 I'm so confused Beatles are far from it Like they don't even think That's why I was so confused. Like Yellow Submarine, the cartoon, the Beatles didn't want anything to do with it. So they had, like, just four dudes do impressions of their voices. And then they saw the movie and they went,
Starting point is 00:39:08 oh, this is cool, man. We'll do something for this now after they recorded all, everything. And so that's why they appear at the very end of the movie. All four of them appear on screen doing a silly bit together before the end credits start. As a kid, I never noticed that their voices were, you know. their impressions are not that strong. Wow. That doesn't not sound like a splendid time for anybody.
Starting point is 00:39:32 But yeah, but Sergeant Pepper's Only House Club band is a crazy movie if you ever get a chance to watch it. You know, I didn't even know what it existed. It's basically a bunch of Beatles songs, like it's a sung-through musical, like there's no dialogue.
Starting point is 00:39:43 And it's all Beatles songs. So the story has to be slapped together using, you know, so there's a girl in it called Strawberry Fields, you know, because it's long. Like, it's really, and Steve Martin is in it as Max from the song Maxwell Silverhand. Bang, bang, Maxwell. He sings that song.
Starting point is 00:40:01 So just for that alone, it's pretty interesting. George Burns is in it. It's crazy. George Burns isn't it? Yeah, yeah. He sings fixing a hole. And I think he also sings the title tune. But anyway, it's a terrible, terrible movie, but fun to watch.
Starting point is 00:40:21 All right. So congratulations to Chad. You won that first game. we got that's a hard one what's that yeah that was a really hard game that was hard it was tough i'm glad somebody got one right uh that worked out that worked out beautifully here's here's what was the tiebreaker was going to be it might as well tell you because this game's already this theme has already blown out it's not like why why can't i have a shot why can't i tie that's why i'm going to tell you it first before telling you the answer oh um but
Starting point is 00:40:50 the theme is bands on the run um okay okay about bands and how they run around from town to town and whatever they held they're up to. Why didn't you put anything in there about the rose? Well, because that's not about a band. That's about a lady who sings and her romance.
Starting point is 00:41:08 You're right. I was waiting for like quadrophenia. Yeah. No, you were definitely in the right zone. But what do you think about this one? I'm ready. What movie do you think has the tagline? The Blues are back.
Starting point is 00:41:24 The Booze? The Blues. The Blues are back. And it's not the Blues Brothers. Blues Brothers, too? Was there a second? Hello? What?
Starting point is 00:41:39 Yes, it is the sequel to the Blues Brothers. The sequel, oh. But it was called, get this. What? Blues Brothers 2000. Oh, man. Remember when people, for a while there, people like putting 2000 on things?
Starting point is 00:41:54 Oh, yeah. That's an exciting. year to put on something guess what year of Blues Brothers 2000 came out in 1998 correct oh isn't that weird wow
Starting point is 00:42:07 it's a horrible movie yeah it's bad it's very bad all right so Chad won that game but we got another game to play and we'll do it right after this break BRB we are B and the game we're going to play today to determine it all between these two fine competitors and the third guest did reach out there was just some
Starting point is 00:42:30 travel issues that caused him to not be able to make it but I will maybe ask him again sometime soon all right I said maybe because you know he didn't tell me about these issues yesterday you're gonna punish him it's not really a punishment not having no no but when this person zoom and talk to me for yeah is maybe not traveling would be maybe yeah and also when they're not when they're not on the road then there might be yes or reliable uh booking did you do did you do that last game because he is a traveling musician exactly there we go there was exactly it was like a welcome to the show we'll play a game where you might have a slight leg up or the pageant knows this knows this very well he would
Starting point is 00:43:20 either excel at it or look silly not excelling at it Oh, see. Yeah. So it works either way. Yeah. All right, but we're going to play a game that I guarantee he would not have been great at, and that would have also been funny. It's called the Julia Roberts game.
Starting point is 00:43:39 Oh. Yeah, I'm so lazy. I couldn't come up with a good Julia Roberts pun, but also I don't want to give away a bunch of Julia Roberts titles, you know. And the reason I thought of this game and playing this game is because it's August the month, And that makes me think of the movie August O'Sage County. Oh, right. Which starred Julia Roberts and was like one of her, you know, several over the years kind of Oscar grab kind of roles.
Starting point is 00:44:09 And it just got me to thinking about the quality of Julia Roberts movies in general. So in this game, you are going to take turns. You're going to get, oh, let's do four guesses each. wait what yeah in a row no taking turn that would be crazy okay i was gonna say that's but it'd be fun to do four since we only have two competitors let's do it what happens or maybe we'll do a fourth if you're tied after three but let's let's just get started and we'll see how we're doing on uh on time but you're gonna take turns guessing the films of julia roberts that you think might be in her top 10 best-reviewed films on Rotten Tomatoes.
Starting point is 00:44:58 Great. If you guess number one, it's worth 10 points. If you guess number 10, it's worth one point. Chad won the first game, so he gets to go first. Wow. I know, right? That scoundrel. You go ahead.
Starting point is 00:45:11 You go ahead. I'm sorry, Patchett. No, no, no, wait till you see. I'm going to mop the floor with you. Yeah, first doesn't always work out for the person. Because, you know, you just, how do you choose? I know. And she's made a lot of movies.
Starting point is 00:45:27 Yeah. And which ones did the critics like the most? I'll tell you, between these movies, between number one is a movie that got 86% and number 10 is 78%. So Julia Roberts has 10 movies that landed between 78 and 86. Okay. It's not a bad, you know, she's gotten some,
Starting point is 00:45:50 She's been in some movies that have been well-reviewed, but nothing in the 90s. And technically, number one, is I just eliminated it because it was a TV movie. Intentionally made for television, not like picked up for TV later. Okay. Chad, what's your first guest?
Starting point is 00:46:11 Julia Roberts. Are you familiar with her? I am familiar with her. I've heard of the lady. I've heard of her. She's a young upstart. Yeah. You know, got a famous brother
Starting point is 00:46:22 Has been in like 8,000 movies She was big when you were thinking about being born That's right Back when you were just a thought Just a twinkle in my papa's eye Is that really how babies start? Yeah, I think my dad just winked at my mom Yeah, that's all that happened
Starting point is 00:46:39 He gave her a wink And I was born That's how I prefer to see it I'm gonna say Aaron Brockovich She won an Academy Award for the portrayal of
Starting point is 00:46:57 Aaron Bra Bra B-R-A-Kovitch and it is number two on the list okay congratulations Chad you're out of the gate with nine points
Starting point is 00:47:09 Padgett you know Julia Roberts pretty woman pretty woman you think is in the top 10 who reviewed Julia Roberts movies. Am I wrong?
Starting point is 00:47:24 You are wrong. Really? It's not even in the top 15. What? That's wild. And here's my theory. Okay. Here's my theory. I know how I know. It was fairly well received at the time when there also wasn't a thing called rotten
Starting point is 00:47:41 tomatoes. Oh, that's a good point. Also, Gary Marshall's not going to, you know. Well, I think they're aggregated. get is possibly and partially based on reviews that happened years after the movie came out. Yes. That's my guess. When it got a re-release or something, there were more
Starting point is 00:48:02 reviews. And viewed through today's lens, I personally do not think it holds up. Oh, I understand what you mean. Yeah. I think it's still shocking that it didn't do better now. Because you know, she was, that was her first. The first Oscar nomination, of course, was for that role. But it's just a case of an actress elevating the material in such an insane way.
Starting point is 00:48:27 Like, she really, that movie made her a star, but she also made that movie a star. With anybody else in that role, that movie would have sucked. Mm-hmm. Yeah, that's true. Yeah. You're right. All right, Chad. What's your second guess?
Starting point is 00:48:43 I'm going on. I'm going to go, man, okay. This is hard. I can't believe Pretty Woman is not on there, honestly. Yeah, that's wild. I'm going to go, I'm going to say Ocean's 11. That is an interesting guess and a correct guess because not only did it make the top 10, but it is number four. Wow, wow, wow, wow.
Starting point is 00:49:09 Really? Another seven points for Chad. Oh, Chad. Agit is in serious catch-up mode. Watch this. You need number one or number three to really be a serious contender at this. Okay, I think, I think, I think I have one and three. Okay, we'll give us number one.
Starting point is 00:49:27 Notting Hill. Ooh. Not number one. Really? Number three. It is number three. There we go. Okay.
Starting point is 00:49:34 Okay. All right. I now know what my number one. I think you know what you think you know, but we'll see if what chat says screws that up. Let's see. He does have two. He has number two. and number seven?
Starting point is 00:49:49 Yeah. Yeah, great. Man. I'm going to go bet my best friend's wedding. You'd think so. This is the break you needed, Paget, because my best friend's wedding fell out of the top ten. What?
Starting point is 00:50:11 And landed at number 12th. Oh. I mean, you just saw that movie, Chad. I did. And you thought it would get good reviews? I figured it'd be like lower on the top 10. I just think it's 7 or 8. I think it's in like the 60s, but again, I think it falls prey to the same thing as Pretty Woman, that it was like a little of
Starting point is 00:50:32 its time. But think about this, just this scene alone, when she's smoking in the hallway of the hotel and Paul Giamatti's first acting job. We're all very excited to see Paul Giamatti. He's great. yeah that was a that was a lovely uh surprise because i forgot that he was in it but that's that's easily the best scene in the movie yeah it's it is it's great yeah all right can i see if i have number one i i i'm really excited about this because i i don't understand where your confidence is coming from no dug neither do i ever that applies to my entire life i don't know where the i think i have it what do you think's number one mystic pizza
Starting point is 00:51:15 Mystic pizza, what a deep cut. Yeah. Deep. Do I get points for my deep dish, my deep cut? Deep dish cut. No, I knew what you were so excited about. There's no way you were going to have the correct answer. There is no way. It's just a, you know, it's just a feeling I had.
Starting point is 00:51:37 But you did get number nine on the list. Okay, I'm in the top ten. That's worth two more points. And so let's go ahead. Let's do four rounds. Let's do one more round. And see, you know, this isn't fair to Chad really because it's just basically giving Padgett a chance. But Chad does have a fairly strong lead and could add some more points.
Starting point is 00:52:01 Chad's a very good game player. You're very good. What's your next guest, Chad? This almost seems like cheating, though, because you already mentioned it. I mentioned what? August O'Sage Kennedy. Oh, wow. Right. Well, that's what's so fun about it is that it basically sets it up so someone can cheat, and it didn't make the top 15.
Starting point is 00:52:22 It didn't? No, it didn't. Wow. It was a, that's the thing is I think it was, I think it had a lot of strong actors in it, and it was really good material. I've seen the play. The play is excellent, but I just think that they, they just blew it. It's about this Southern family, and it's got, like, Benedict Cumberbatch and Ewan McGregor, and, like, everybody's from all of, all places all over the world, and none of them are from the South. It doesn't make any sense, casting-wise, but, you know, and it's just a hard play to adapt. It was like a three-hour play that they try to adapt into a movie, and, you know, it's just something's play better as a play. But anyway, Padgett, this is it.
Starting point is 00:53:05 This is such an exciting finish. This sucks because I'm so torn. I am having such a hard time. Well, Chad's got 16 points total. So you need either name the number one movie or if you name the number five movie, you could tie it up with Chad. But this is, I can't, I can't lie to you. This is tough.
Starting point is 00:53:31 Okay, okay. All right. I am going to say I'm going to say America's sweethearts Wow with Billy Crystal I don't remember
Starting point is 00:53:46 I'm thinking of the wrong movie Or Dennis Quaid What's the movie with John Cusack And And Yeah What's her name? Michael Douglas's wife
Starting point is 00:53:57 And she plays the sister Catherine Zeta Jones Catherine Zeta Jones Oh yeah that might be it Julia Roberts, is that in the top 10? That might be America's sweethearts. I think it is. Yeah, but I swear like Billy Crystal or somebody else is in it too.
Starting point is 00:54:11 Is he? Dennis Quaid. No, I'm confusing that with, it's definitely not Dennis Quaid. But anyway, whoever it is and whatever it is, it doesn't make the list. Can I ask another question? It doesn't count as a point. Okay. I'm seeing it in my head and this was my other option.
Starting point is 00:54:27 Persuasion? Persuasion. You mean closer? Whoops. is that what you're going to win this one i really thought i was going to win this one i really thought well we're the same age i can't believe pretty woman's not on there yeah i don't yeah no you got you really got boned by pretty woman not being on there but uh closer was number uh or closer was number 13 what's that move oh yeah i thought that's what you meant instead of persuasion
Starting point is 00:54:56 she's also in something called persuasion i feel like i'm seeing the movie poster in my head, and now I'm wondering if that was something fake from Notting Hill. Oh, probably. I can envision like Julia Robertson in a nun habit. Yeah, but she's never played like, you know, a monster or, you know, she never did that
Starting point is 00:55:15 like played a serial killer or an evil queen or, you know what I mean? She was in that weird when nobody went to the something about her eyes eyes of something like where she was, she was trying to get revenge off like her sister gets raped and then she goes after
Starting point is 00:55:32 the lawyer that that's just bad casting she shouldn't be in any of those movies and she was in you know like early on her career she was in that one about the enemy oh sleeping with the enemy sleeping with the enemy wait what's the number one that was kind of and flatliners like she's been in some flatliner she's been in almost every genre I think but anyway congratulations what doesn't she have one coming out that's like kind of a hard edge drama like you said like a war season sort of thing i think so yeah i think it's definitely oscar bait all right we got we got some business to take care of and we have to go so wait but what was the number one julia roberts movie i get that's what i'm talking about is oh sorry
Starting point is 00:56:15 two of you stopped speaking but first before i tell you the answers you didn't get chad gets to do his plugs because people are wrapped with attention now to hear that's right answers so chad what would you like to plug uh i well you mentioned the rogue like tavern show the grong key every first thursday um what do i got coming up i got oh well next saturday i'm doing a couple shows in la called pooh-pousas and punch lines six and an o'clock next saturday uh i don't even know the venue i should have looked this shit up but i'm not there doing stand-up you can follow me on instagram at chat opets uh yeah and i'll probably be on one of doug's shows coming up soon Is that O-P-I-T-S?
Starting point is 00:56:58 A Z. O-P-P-T-S with a Z. Got it. All right, Patrick. Here's what you wanted to know. Thank you. Now, these are the movies that she did that got the best reviews, and what both of you sort of,
Starting point is 00:57:14 the trap you fell into was naming the movies that were her most popular, you know, her well-known titles. And that's the thing that she's always sort of like strive to be in, more serious things and like i said it's gotten some pretty good reviews over the years for the following movies number 10 michael collins oh totally forgot about that one yeah uh number nine was missing pizza uh eight was uh i guess it was well reviewed she was the voice of the spider in charlotte's web that doesn't count i know i would throw that one out next movie that doesn't count. I don't count any movie
Starting point is 00:57:54 directed by an actor. It's George Clooney's Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. Oh. I forgot she was even in that. I didn't remember that either. She sure is in it. And then Sporting Actress nomination, I think, for
Starting point is 00:58:10 Charlie Wilson's War. Oh, wow. With Tom Hanks. Yeah. And Philip Seymour Hoffman. Yeah. And number five, Ben is back. What the hell is that? What? That was a real big. dramatic swing.
Starting point is 00:58:24 It was like her kid had cancer or was gay or something. Never heard of it. It was a pretty heavy drama with lots of heavy Julia Roberts acting. Then Ocean's 11, Notting Hill, Aaron Brockovich, and the number one best reviewed
Starting point is 00:58:40 movie that is not a TV movie that stars Julia Roberts is called Wonder. What? What the hell is Wonder? Jacob Tremblay plays the deformed a child with a, uh, uh, uh, you know, a, shall I say, like interesting face and Owen Wilson and Julia Roberts are his parents.
Starting point is 00:59:02 And if you've never even heard of it, you need to correct yourself and not only hear of it, but see it. It is the best reviewed movie that Julia Roberts has ever been. That's wild. What year did that come out? Uh, a couple years ago. Okay.
Starting point is 00:59:18 Maybe four or five years ago, I think. So you, you recommend this as well. sounds like. I mean, also, who doesn't love Owen Wilson? Like, it's kind of like Marley and me, but instead of Jennifer Anderson, it's Julia Roberts, and instead of a dog, it's a kid. The kid dies? I didn't say that. Doesn't the dog die and Marley and me? Pretty sure. That's a big part of it. Well, yeah, the dog does a lot of things. The kid doesn't shit on a couch either. True. I have seen neither movie. I have seen neither movie. Well, Marley's out of control,
Starting point is 00:59:46 and his kid in wonder, he's an angel, but he's got, you know, a disfigured face. you know from a birth defect i believe and uh it's just a it's charming and and heartbreaking and oh you love it it's really good yeah that's what i'm saying did they get any like awards nominations it got some attention but did not get you know as much as it deserved i don't think i think critics were in its corner way more than but i i think it also did okay business i don't think it was a failure um but yeah it's called wonder w-o-n-d-d-er padget brewster What would you like to promote? I would like everybody to be watching every episode of Criminal Mind's evolution
Starting point is 01:00:29 and Criminal Mind's original recipe from CBS on Paramount Plus. And we are currently shooting season 19, and I don't know when it's going to start airing, but we still have to keep shooting a couple of weeks. And then I don't know, maybe they'll put it on in the spring. Yeah, who knows? I don't know, Paramount Plus. You're not even finished this season.
Starting point is 01:00:50 That's why you don't know yet about the next one, but they'll be... Yeah, season 18 just finished airing, I think. Yeah. Yeah. And Doug, didn't you say this is on season 19 as well? Yeah. Douglose movies is 19. But I don't think Criminal Minds is exactly 19 years old, though.
Starting point is 01:01:07 Oh. No, this is 19th season. Whoa. Yeah. It's our 19th season, but we were down for two years. You know, we did season... That's impressive. season 15 on CBS was shot in like 2020 or 2019 and they broke it up into two 10 episode seasons and then the pandemic and then we started shooting season 16.
Starting point is 01:01:37 There you go. Did you say there was one of Criminal Mind's original recipe? Yeah, it's not called original. Criminal Minds was originally on CBS from 2004 to 2000. 2019 or yeah 2018 or 19 I thought it was like you're you're like solving kitchen kitchen crimes or something
Starting point is 01:01:55 Yeah no no no my friend Joel McHale does that Doug plugs Tuesday September 2 Betsy movie interruptions back at Dynasty Typewriter in LA on Monday September 8th we're doing Douglow's movies at the Gramercy Theater it's good to be back there
Starting point is 01:02:16 in New York city that's monday september 8th and then wednesday september 17th douglos movies returns to the creek and the cave in austin texas oh also i'm doing stand-up at the comedy vault in batavia illinois on september 26 and 27 all my dates and deeds and links are at douglasmovies dot com thank you chad opitz paget brewster and a third guest i'm thanking you in spirit Even though you're not here today, we still had fun without you.
