Starting point is 00:00:00 Doug hates candy wrappers screening baby sticky seeds with 50 as a pop or kernels in his teeth. They're still not one that he won't see because Doug loves movies. Hey, hey, hey, everybody. My name is Doug and I love movies. This is Doug Love's Movies recording on Wednesday, January 7th, 2026. Quick reminder that new EPS will be released at 12.01 a.m. Pacific time every Thursday. Ooh, that was a very quick reminder. My guests today are Paget Brewster, Jeremy Elder, and Chad Opitz.
Starting point is 00:00:49 Hello. Hi. Hi. Let's meet them individually, alphabetically. by first name he co-hosts a monthly show in burbank california and was the winner on the last road episode from san diego it's chad opens hey buddy how are you doing man i'm doing okay you know it's a interesting times we're living in tell us anything tell us about your show it's called the wrong key the wrong key at uh rogue like tab
Starting point is 00:01:26 in Burbank every first Thursday of the month I love it and I promise I'll do it someday one of these days we'll get you one of these days I'd love to you know I've always I always look forward to visiting Burbank and this is a great opportunity to do so stop by poros get some tasty treats oh my God I don't want to wait in line yeah that's true there's always a line there yeah it's crazy people that don't live live in the area, I don't know what we're talking about. But, you know, they're building a massive porthos at downtown Disney. Whoa.
Starting point is 00:02:05 I didn't know that. Yeah. So maybe that'll take some of the stress off of the birthday one. There we go. But thanks for being here, dude. He is the winner from our last episode where he competed against his own sketch group partners from Business Casual. it's Jeremy Elder
Starting point is 00:02:27 Hey Jeremy Hello we are so back How you doing Doug What do you think the other two fellows are doing right now Because you stomp their asses Yeah I haven't spoken to them since I think we're kind of done for after Oh no
Starting point is 00:02:42 After the clinic I put on in the last episode Yeah I think There's no coming back from that This show destroyed a sketch group Yeah It's happened before We had all 10 members of the state and they've stopped speaking.
Starting point is 00:02:58 Oh, Lord. I broke up to kids in the hall. At least two kids in the hall have been on this show, maybe three. Anyway, but tell us about your show that is going to be here in Los Angeles at the Legion. It's called Cowboys. Yes, this is a show that we most recently brought
Starting point is 00:03:18 to the Edinburgh Fringe. We did it a little bit off-Broadway in New York. This is a live-action cowboy Western play. very Blazing Saddles, very Monty Python-esque live show that we've written over the past few years and we're finally coming around and filming it and that's going to be on February 7th at the Elysian Theater. We're doing all the prep and all that fun stuff now,
Starting point is 00:03:42 but we're really excited for it, so definitely come on out. Well, based on those references, Blazing Saddles and Monty Python, let's be clear, the show is not racist or British. we took out all the bad parts all the Britishness and racism no Brits nobody trimmed that bonsai tree and now it's perfect
Starting point is 00:04:03 yeah okay I'm not I'm just kidding around I love Britishness she is always a winner in our hearts it's Padgett Brewster hello it's so great to have you here
Starting point is 00:04:22 Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule injuring yourself. I'm so sorry. I don't mean to upset you by posting myself inflicted injuries. I burn myself with cooking oil. And Doug Benson is the only person. The only person who texted me, I would like for the new year for you to stop hurting yourself. Well, because, you know, there's been a few incidents in as many months. and um you know it was last year i broke my elbow i'm scared that was the ice's fault i slipped on
Starting point is 00:04:57 ice in the morning yeah well you know right boots i was even wearing the fancy snow boots the whole the thing you're supposed to be wearing and i but thank you Doug your concern and friendship means the world to me well when will we know or when will you know because you'll be the first to hear probably ahead of us uh if there's going to be more criminal lines We actually don't know. We finished filming season 19. We shot 10 episodes that we finished filming September 12th, and they still haven't told us when they're going to air. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:05:33 And so, and we don't know yet if they're going to pick us up to shoot a season 20. So I'm laying on my couch talking to my friend. That seems like an awful, well, you should talk to us. But I feel like, stop talking to your friend. And this is for people who don't know. This is the show Criminal Minds. It's on Paramount Plus. Yeah, but Paramount is.
Starting point is 00:06:02 How can you say that's the number you can't. I know, I know. You can't mess around with. I know. I know. You can't quit at 19. I know. I know.
Starting point is 00:06:10 Fingers crossed. You got to do 20. You can't quit at 19 is Leonardo DiCaprio's mind. well we're all crossing our fingers for you but also looking forward to seeing season 19 and before we play some games today i'd like to do what we do pretty much every week on the show and that's talk about movies that you love i would like each one of you to recommend one film starting with chad always got interesting interesting Rex. What have you got for us today, Chad? I was talking with a buddy of mine recently about, like, 90s thrillers. And I thought that was like a heyday for like really good thriller movies. And one that I really love is a breakdown with Kurt Russell. Okay. You've seen that one? Oh, I have. That's like a perfect thriller in my opinion. Yeah, it's really
Starting point is 00:07:14 suspenseful and exciting and has a a great leading man great villains, good action yeah, no, that's the late J.T. Walsh. Always so good. Not a lot of people your age, Chad, running around talking about J.T. Walsh. No, I'm trying to keep it alive, baby. Yeah. Do you remember,
Starting point is 00:07:38 did you see Slingblade? I love, I love Slingblade and I love him in Slingblade. Yeah, he just has the one scene at the beginning, but he really, his character, he says all you need to know about him, the way he drags a chair across the room. Yeah, so good in that. Yeah, and it sets the pace and the tone of the entire movie. I think we've maybe had this conversation before, but, uh,
Starting point is 00:08:02 Breakdown, do you remember the name of the director of Breakdown? Jonathan Mostow. That's it. Mostow. Cause, uh, because he's, he had a few decent films around that time. Yeah, and I don't think he's been doing, I don't think he's been doing much lately.
Starting point is 00:08:19 Well, you never know with these directors these days, because a lot of them end up, because there's so much great television and streaming shows, you get a lot of film directors that just sort of pivot into the TV world. And so maybe he's doing that. But if anybody out there wants to look up Jonathan Mostow, hit me up, let me know what he's up to. Or I'll look him up. I'll look him up later. Great recommendation, Chad. Jeremy, top that. It's a tough top.
Starting point is 00:08:53 Last time you made fun of my sad trio of movies of train dreams and hamnet, so I'm going to change it up a little bit. That movie is one short of a trio. That list you just made. And because I don't really love talking about the testament to Van Lee, but I'll give it that every time there. No, a movie I love to recommend people is this movie, Victoria, a German film from 2015. Do you know this movie?
Starting point is 00:09:20 2015 and called Victoria. That's the one that's a wonder. The whole movie's one shot. The true oneer. It came out right. What? Wow. And it is a, I saw a interview with the director, and it was beautiful how they just said, like,
Starting point is 00:09:35 yeah, we shot the movie and we went home that night and we watched the movie. Wow. And it's this whole heist movie And you just kind of feel stuck with this crew Because there's just no cuts It's there's no time jumps It's just a two hour You're just stuck with this crew
Starting point is 00:09:53 On a heist that goes wrong And it is Could not recommend it more It's called Victoria Did they have to Did they rehearse for a month I mean how do you even do that Tons of rehearsals
Starting point is 00:10:05 Tons of cameras They ran the movie I think Two or three times I believe where they did the whole movie. Oh. So they shot it like three times and six out. Wow. Wow. You did it twice in the morning and then had lunch and did it one more time. Little union break and then they ran it back one more time.
Starting point is 00:10:25 Like shooting married with children. Oh, but also it's just such an intense story. It's not like, you know, it's not like a one or at a dinner party. It's like they moved from different locations and, And very, very complicated and, uh, and impressive. And also, uh, when you're watching it, it's not just a stunt. Like you're kind of aware, oh, man, this is really just one take. Uh, but it's, uh, still a compelling story and good acting.
Starting point is 00:10:58 Yeah, very compelling story. They got relationships. There's action. Like, even with the one or of it all, they still manage to fit a pretty good movie in there. I highly recommend. That is a, uh, that's a, that's a, that's a, a good one. Padgett,
Starting point is 00:11:13 what do you got for us today? Doug! Usually I'm the one recommending movies from the 90s, so I hope you're going to be proud of me today. Now, this movie did come out in 2021. Okay.
Starting point is 00:11:27 It's called Red Rocket. Yeah. It was directed by Sean Baker. Is that right? The guy who directed Anora with Simon Rex. Have you guys all seen this? Yeah. great movie what where how did i not know about it it is it doesn't have to be something none
Starting point is 00:11:45 of us have seen i'm sure that some people listening have not gotten around to red red rocket because it was i mean it was after the success of florida project so that so sean baker got a bump from that because he got like you know especially the william defoe supporting part in florida project got uh you know he got an oscar nomination and stuff and then uh red Rocket Simon Rex was really in the hunt for for a best actor known but I feel like he fell into like the six or seven slot that year but there was a lot of
Starting point is 00:12:20 you know a lot of hype for it and then of course Sean Baker then of course went on to do when Nora and when like you know he won like at the end of the Oscars he was standing around with five of them yeah uh writing producing directing and editing so he yeah he had four personal Oscars and then Mikey Madison won for Best Actress. But since you brought this up, Padgett, well, we could talk more about Red Rocket in
Starting point is 00:12:49 a second, but has anybody on this call seen Left-Haded Girl? No. No. Okay. I'm going to give you my recommendation of the week because it is edited and produced and co-written by Sean Baker, who are just now talking about. Yes, and it is much like his earlier film, Tangerine, is shot entirely using phones, and it takes place in Taiwan, and it is, the photography is gorgeous, the setting is fascinating, and the camera or phones are, like, moving all the time, but there's a little girl in this movie. It was like, I think she's, like, she was four playing three or five playing four, something like that.
Starting point is 00:13:38 She's playing a little younger than she is, but she's pretty damn young. And she's the titular character, the left-handed girl, and she's incredible. I was hoping that she'd get some award consideration. But when a kid's that young, it's almost like a trick. You know, it's like, how did they even pull this off? And my guess is that she was very comfortable with the filmmakers and the fact that they were doing it on phones probably led to a better child performance than if they had a big camera in her face.
Starting point is 00:14:10 That's a good point. Yeah, but anyway, it's a very, it's, you know, it's definitely got sad parts, but it's also very sweet, and this little girl will really steal your heart. Wow. As opposed to Red Rock at work, where a guy runs around with his dick out.
Starting point is 00:14:28 As well, now. But the casting. I, I, I, I thought the casting in it was exquisite. Same with the Nora. I have not seen the Florida Project, though. Oh, well, there you go. There's a couple of movies that you need to see.
Starting point is 00:14:45 I now have three written down. Left-handed Girl, Victoria, and the Florida Project. Left-handed Girls on Netflix, I think. So is Red Rocket. Yeah, there you go. Nice. Home to Sean Baker movies, I guess. Chad, I'm sorry your movie didn't make Paget's list.
Starting point is 00:15:04 I'm sorry What, wait, is he in a movie? I'm supposed to... Did you ever see... No, no, the movie he recommended that we've all already forgotten, but did you... Did you...
Starting point is 00:15:18 Padgett, you've seen Duel, the Spielberg movie? Of course, yeah, the made for TV, made for ABC movie with the... Yeah, yeah. Dennis Weaver? Was it Dennis Weaver? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:27 That's true. That's a beautiful movie. Who played the guy in the other car? I'm joking, I don't think you don't see it. But in the truck, I guess he was in. Let's say it was Randy Quaid. But, okay, that's fair.
Starting point is 00:15:42 I'll take it. But Breakdown, the Chad's recommendation was, it was kind of, kind of had a dual vibe to it. Oh, I've seen breakdown. Correctly. Oh, you have? Yes, yes, yes. Okay. So I was, I silently agreed.
Starting point is 00:16:00 Sorry, I didn't support you verbally, vocally. I apologize. If you saw my face, I was giving you two thumbs up when you said Kurt Russell's breakdown. Well, I think all these recommendations are great and people can run out and find these things. But first, we've got more show coming up. We've got some great ads for you to listen to.
Starting point is 00:16:31 Shopify and that Chiching sound that everybody loves. I don't know for sure if that's one of the ads but we're going to play some games after these messages we are back and I say it a lot but best commercial breaks in the business we were having so much fun during that break
Starting point is 00:16:55 and y'all missed out on it but we'll try to bring the fun right now with our first game and it's a new one that I call yeah good luck to everybody including myself this game is called third banana I like the name yeah I'll name the top two build stars of a motion picture and the title of the motion picture and then you the players have to guess who is third build in that film so I'll give you an example before we get into it.
Starting point is 00:17:35 The specials from 2000 stars Roblo and Thomas Hayden Church. Do you know who's building that chat? Oh, man. No. About you, Jeremy? Do you know, Jeremy? Do you not have the answer there now. Padgett?
Starting point is 00:17:53 Is it me? It is. Yeah. There's some reason. Sadly, you haven't seen this film. Sadly, you haven't seen this film. because it came it's a it's a superhero that came out i'm the same week mystery men came out and we were annihilated oh the same week but it's james gun james gun wrote it uh-huh Craig mazen directed it
Starting point is 00:18:15 i think it's a solid film i loved doing it so that i would say you know what okay my movie suggestion is specials from 2000 well i did a quick i did a quick little uh search and i don't believe it's available anywhere. Oh, well, there you go. Yeah, but you never know. These things, you know, they come back because different streamers, you know, buy movies and then dump movies and then buy them up again. But, I mean, just you, Rob Lowe and Thomas Hayden Church is enough reason to, for them
Starting point is 00:18:47 to, you know, bring it back. That's Jamie Kennedy's in it. Judy Greer. It's too bad. You can't find it anywhere. I think it's really good. I think it's a really good movie. Yeah, that was my, that was my biggest selling point to talking to my girlfriend about, you know, possibly watching it, is that Judy Greer's in it.
Starting point is 00:19:07 She's great. She's great. Judy Greer fans. All right. So that's the premise of this game. The first chat will be up first. If he doesn't know the answer, then Jeremy gets a shot out of it. Jeremy doesn't know the answer to it. Padgett, you get a shot at it. Nobody knows the answer if we just move on. somebody gets it right the next round starts with the next person great here we go chad okay this is just you if you can name the third build person and i'll apologize right now for how old some of these
Starting point is 00:19:41 movies are all right don't do that honey yeah but i mean you know chad recommended breakdown from yeah 1973 so uh oh no wait that was sorcerer no sorry oh yeah 77 77 70 70 Yeah, Chad recommended Sorcerer recently. Have you seen Sorcerer Paget? I don't believe I have. What do you think it's about? I immediately picture Labyrinths. Does David Bowie in it?
Starting point is 00:20:10 Is it like Labyrinth? No. I mean. Is it Dolph Lundgren? The Sorcerer. Is it Christopher Lee? No. It's fun that you're willing to guess this hard.
Starting point is 00:20:24 You told me, too. When I did, because I did, because I knew you would know if you weren't familiar with the movie, that's an insanely misleading title. Because it really just sounds like it is going to be about sorcerers and sorcery and neither come up in the film. It's a William Freakin movie from the 70s with Roy Scheider trying to get a truck full of glycerin over a rickety bridge.
Starting point is 00:20:50 That's pretty much the whole thing, yeah. Yeah, that's the whole thing. Wow. Is it good? I mean, that sounds, that's pretty compelling. I haven't seen it in a while, but did you see it on the big screen, Chad? I just saw it at the Egyptian last Friday. Yeah, great.
Starting point is 00:21:06 So it must be amazing to see it that way. It was excellent. All right, here we go. The film is Grumpy Old Men. Ooh. Okay. Starring Walter Mathau and Jack Levin. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:23 Chad, who do you think is third film in that? Okay. Man, my grandpa loved this movie. I think it was Anne Margaret, wasn't it? That is correct. Oh, yeah. I really wanted you to get to me. We will eventually.
Starting point is 00:21:44 But yeah, Anne Margaret played the love interest of both men. And that has contributed to their grumpiness is that they both wanted to get with Anne Margaret. And who doesn't get horny for Mafow? Come on. Yeah, right? It's crazy. All right. Jeremy, did you have any idea on that one?
Starting point is 00:22:07 No, that one would have. I'm glad it ended a Chad. Yeah, so now you get a nice fresh start. Who's third build in grumpier old men? Oh, no. Jack Lemon. and the saddest part is i don't even remember who chad just said is the third building grumpy old men so i can't even use that oh no well chad said uh anne margaret
Starting point is 00:22:34 you know what i'm just going to go and assume this might be they just ran it back with the whole cast let's go anne margaret there's you know that's why it's fun to put in a game because there's a very good chance that somebody else like kevin pollock who played uh you know the grandson of one of those guys or just son i guess but No, it is, in fact, and Margaret. So, Jeremy, you are also on the board. You also have a point. Padgett, they stopped making grumpy or old men movies at that port.
Starting point is 00:23:03 They did make a movie together called Out to Sea, where it was basically grumpy or old men on a cruise ship. But that's not the next title. I think they're doing grumpy old men, Tokyo Drifts next to you. Yeah, right, Paget. Yeah. From 1994, a motion picture called IQ, starring Tim Robbins and Meg Ryan. Do you remember that movie?
Starting point is 00:23:35 Tim Robbins and Meg Ryan IQ. I don't. And I'm thinking of inner space. Which one should always do when thinking about Meg Ryan. Okay, I'm going to say the third person is Martin Short. Oh, I mean, why not? Meg and Ryan, they sort of work together in inner space. I mean, he was inside Dennis Quaid most of the time.
Starting point is 00:24:11 And not when Dennis Quaid was inside Meg Ryan. That is incorrect, though. sure it is. Oh, but oh, you keep asking, though. Yeah, always nice to talk about Martin Short. Chad, are you familiar at all with this movie? I am. You are? Is this another grandpa's favorites? No, but it did feature, I'm pretty sure I got the answer, because it also had one of the grumpy old men, Walter Mathau on it. And I'm going to say Walter Mathau. That is correct. Wow. Matthew Mattoe is in IQ as, of all things, Albert Einstein.
Starting point is 00:24:52 Like Tim Robbins and Meg Ryan are trying to have a romance, and then they go to Einstein for advice. Didn't he do that right after, what was it, Dennis the Menace or something? Walter Mathau, Dennis the Menace, is a combination of hilarious, because he's always funny and always good and everything he does. but it's like Dennis the Menace with the kind of like home alone treatment so the idea is that Dennis keeps causing violent things to happen to his neighbor Mr. Wilson
Starting point is 00:25:26 who's like he was and whatever age he was and there is a scene there is a scene where Walter Mathau is in his pajamas barefoot in the bathroom and for some reason the menace has caused a slippery situation and he does the splits into a nutcrack on the on the tiled floor oh my god it is so gruesome and he just you know looks up to the camera gets a shot from over head and he looks up rude you know yeah as one does when that happens so it's and i'm sure he'll heal up just fine yeah like in home alone it's like these guys are trying to break into a house god knows what
Starting point is 00:26:09 else they've been up to like you know so we get a little pain for them is yeah you know it's cute but like uh dennis the menace took it too far and i don't think it was successful and then of course they made a baby's day out yeah in which a small baby tortures joey pants and uh brian tanya brian haley and your buddy gentleman yes yes he talked about being in a convertible filled with it was supposed to be concrete and it was really cold what's it called porridge that you eat in the morning porridge no what is it oatmeal oh meal yeah it was cold oatmeal that was supposed to look like porridge so funny wait they had to like lay in cold oatmeal yes that's
Starting point is 00:26:59 hilarious it's supposed to be cement they get the baby that's the baby isn't really trying to hurt them it just it just works out that way it doesn't know any better. No, but it's, the baby is one of the cutest movie babies ever and but they have things like it crawling across a busy highway and shit.
Starting point is 00:27:19 But my favorite, next time you see Joe Mantania, maybe you can ask him about this and the indignity of filming it is the baby somehow gets up inside Joe Mantania's pants and takes a bick lighter and lights his nuts on fire. Oh my God.
Starting point is 00:27:38 I forgot about that I will ask him I will ask him and also the stunt double for the baby was none other than Vern Troyer Yes Wow
Starting point is 00:27:51 I love that I love that for them All right Chad's got two points Jeremy's up first on this next one This was from 2000 and I want to say three, I think five, 2005.
Starting point is 00:28:11 The movie is from Steven Spielberg called War of the Worlds starring Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning. Do you recall who else was in that with them, Jeremy? I'm really trying to kind of like, I haven't seen that movie probably since it came out. That was a long time. Yeah, 21 years. let's see
Starting point is 00:28:38 who's the this is going to I knew this game would be my undoing and I was going to pull out some and Margaret but I don't think that one's going to apply here I don't think my strategy is going to save me you want to pass you know what let's go with another one that we've gone through so far
Starting point is 00:29:02 let's go with Padgett Brewster I mean, I've tried to slip up, you know, actors' names by them and games before, but you have to, it has to be somebody like Michael Rooker that doesn't remember anything he does. I don't think I don't think I could trick Paget that way, but, so that is incorrect. And it's Padgett's turn to. Never been in a big budget movie. I have no. memory um do you think you saw it uh no i know i saw it okay and i remember but i can't i don't
Starting point is 00:29:44 remember who else was in the movie it's not populated by a lot of uh actors it's mostly tom cruise and and dakota trying to escape so then i'm i'm going to say i'm going to say it was another kid Morgan lily i don't know who that is but shoot that's incorrect uh chad uh i i did see this like 20 years ago but i can't really remember it very well but i'm strictly going to do this based on the
Starting point is 00:30:16 the pattern that's been happening okay and i'm going to say because i think he might be in it tim robbins is he in it tim robbins is in war of the world oh hey wow yeah chat out with this big brain damn it yeah he was in IQ. Wow. I figured that was the pattern he was doing. But also we really skated by his name when we were talking about IQ. You know, so good on you, Chad, for putting that together.
Starting point is 00:30:48 Well done. And Jeremy, this is just, it's, it's academic at this point, but let me give you the next one and see how you fare with it. Because also with these games, I try to make it get like a little easier and a little bit more current uh towards the end because we you know we need a winner and i didn't know all three of you were going to be so great at this so uh this next one i think you should be able to get one battle after another the stars the two top billed people are leonado decaprio and sean penn out of that big cast who do you think uh third billing i'm gonna have to, yeah, I'm going to go with my in sync. Is it Regina Hall?
Starting point is 00:31:37 No. Adler. I haven't seen it. I don't know. Are you going to see it? I mean, probably. I'd say that's, how often you get now and see stuff on the big screen these days? I'm trying to remember.
Starting point is 00:31:57 But do you go out to movies ever? Not much. Not much. Not much. Yeah, it's a lot. What did I just see in the theater? What did I see in the theater? Hamnet.
Starting point is 00:32:08 No, I haven't seen that either. What? What did I see in the theater? This is a fun game. It's like talking to grandma. Terrible. It is talking to grandma. I'll remember what I saw in the theater.
Starting point is 00:32:22 Okay, so I'm going to say the third build person in, what's it called again? Ready Player One? What's it called? What's it called? It's called Breakdance Fever. What's it called? It's the one player after another. One player after another.
Starting point is 00:32:38 It's Leonardo DiCaprio. Sean Penn, second build, even though he's up for supporting actor. Sean Penn. Saga Woods. And. And. And. Is it a woman?
Starting point is 00:32:54 It's not Regina. It's not Regina Hall. I love Regina. She's, I love her. I wish she was in it. I love her. Tayana Taylor. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:04 They got nominated for today, just today for Best Ensemble of the Saga Awards. Isn't Tiana Taylor in it? She is. Is she the third build? Is that your guess? Yeah. Incorrect. Oh.
Starting point is 00:33:17 But she is in it. Yeah. Oh, I got something. I mean, at least I know someone who's in it. Yeah. Impressive. Chad? Uh, is it Benicia Littoro?
Starting point is 00:33:28 Yeah. Oh, dang. Okay. he's not even that much but he's great in it both he and Sean Penn got nominated today and we'll probably do so again for the Oscars and
Starting point is 00:33:41 you know how Beniso do Terrell's got for my mind one of the best responses he's got a few great lines but the one the one that people are quoting a lot is when a cop asked him if you've been drinking in he says some small beers
Starting point is 00:33:56 small beers yeah Like they're shaped Like the little V8 cans My theater erupted when that happened First time seeing it It was it was electric Yeah because it's like
Starting point is 00:34:11 Often referred to as a comedy But there's not that many laughs in it But the ones that are there are solid Like this really And Benicio really brings it He and Leo together are a lot of fun They should maybe do a prequel Where they both on and around together
Starting point is 00:34:26 Like a horror remit make Phelma and Louise with those two. Okay, so I'm just going to give Padgett one more just for fun so she can have that. Because I won't get it. But this is the easiest one. I'm ready. This is the absolute easiest one. Sweet. But it's still
Starting point is 00:34:46 hard in its own way because sometimes you just don't know, you may know who's in a movie, but the billing is confusing sometimes. But the film is the original Guardians of the Galaxy and the two that I will tell you are Chris Pratt and Vin Diesel. And, oh, damn, what is her name?
Starting point is 00:35:11 She's blue. Mama Smurf. Damn it. She was one best supporting actress last year, the Oscars for Amelia Perez. I didn't see that. That's no excuse. I know. It's, is she in Lioness?
Starting point is 00:35:35 Have you seen her AT&T commercials? Yes. Yes. And her name escapes me. Very attractive lady. Very, very, very watchable. She's one of the stars of Lioness on Paramount Plus. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:35:53 And I should have paid attention to the, credits. She's in those AT&T commercials. She's green in Galaxy of the Oh, I thought she was blue. And she's blue in Star Trek. Oh, okay, okay. What is the first letter of her
Starting point is 00:36:09 first name? A lot of blue, a lot of color. Yeah. What is the first letter of her first name? She's not third build, so this is like we're going down. This is a complete way.
Starting point is 00:36:23 Okay, okay, wait, okay, wait, okay, wait. Is it the bald guy? that big guy real big guy it's not him no is it Bradley Cooper is the raccoon oh there we go
Starting point is 00:36:37 I got some that doesn't count if it's only a voice I don't know I don't know about that and I do a lot of voice work I'm not trying to be rude yeah rocket's such a great character
Starting point is 00:36:48 though and you know Vin Diesel only says one word over three words over and over again and he's second bill yeah that was shot as Groot yeah And Diesel was, yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:58 Yeah. Yeah. All right. Well, Chad won that game. Congrats, Chad. Why, thank you, Jeremy. He wiped the floor. Oh, jeez.
Starting point is 00:37:08 Me. And, of course, you know, Chad's no stranger to what that means. It means he has to go first in our next game, which we will play after these words. We are back, and it's time to play. This is a format I use all the time, but sort of a new game because it's got a different title. And it's called, oh no, it's a musical. People hate musicals, especially when they go to a movie and they just didn't, you know, do enough research and find out at the last second that people are just going to burst into song, much like that movie we just mentioned, Amelia Pipp. as is one of the weirder musicals in the last couple of years.
Starting point is 00:38:00 I love musicals. So I looked up, Rotten Tomato made a list of the 100 best reviewed musicals of all time. Of all time. Wow. Yeah, all the way back to whatever the first musical might have been. I wrote down the top 10 best reviewed songfests. and you will each take turns guessing movie musicals you think made the list.
Starting point is 00:38:32 If your answer is number one, you get 10 points, number two, nine points, all the way down to number one is worth, I mean, number 10 is worth one point. We'll each get three guesses total, we'll take turns, we'll flip the order around, so we'll start with Chad, and then we'll go to Padgett, and then to Jeremy. and good luck this one is going to be rough yeah as i was writing all these down i was like oh they might get two of these um because yeah because there's a lot of musicals so just put your minds on which ones like do you think like just got like almost perfect reviews like are in the upper 90s to 100% on the rotten tomatoes. Chad, you get the first guess. Man, okay.
Starting point is 00:39:33 I'm going to keep it real current. I think the critics were pretty nice to this one. I'll just go say the Wicked. You think the critics put Wicked in the top 10 musicals of all. I have no idea. I'm taking a swing at it. And, you know, we like full titles. Oh, oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:40:00 What is the name of it? Oh, I can't remember. Oh, I, it's not the second one. What's the first one? It's called. You're on the right track. Yeah, you really are. Damn, wicked.
Starting point is 00:40:17 Damn, it's something to do with Oz. They released them a year apart. okay and this was the first one that you're talking about yeah and it was what would you call the first movie in a series when they know it's going to be a series oh wicked wicked the beginning i don't remember what the hell the name no it's called wicked we's just getting started yeah i don't know i can't remember so i don't remember either wicked poland there's more of this shit to come Wow. It's just called Wicked Part 1. Oh, Jesus.
Starting point is 00:40:56 Not on the list. Okay. That's why I could just guide you to saying the title. Or I tried to anyway. Padgett, what's your first guess? The Wizard of Oz. Wow, she really just shot that right out after we just had this discussion about how wicked didn't even make, you know, didn't even make the cut and it's a good good guess though because it is number five
Starting point is 00:41:27 awesome number five musical of all time wizard of Oz currently can be seen at the sphere and they throw foam apples at you in that one scene well people scramble to get to foam apples like it's a baseball at a game oh my god really well well I think they drop so many of them that pretty much everybody gets one. But, you know, you pay hundreds of dollars a ticket. You better get a fucking foam apple. Okay, Jeremy, what's your first guess? Padgett's got six points.
Starting point is 00:42:07 Chad has yet to put any on the board, but still anybody's game, obviously. Let's just go with some dingers. I'm going to go singing in the rain. Number one. I was going to guess that, too. Good job. number one awesome yeah because it is a perfect movie it's fantastic wow i really i thought wizard of odds or beat it great great guess because it's it's like it captured a time and you know a thing
Starting point is 00:42:35 that really happened the the move from talkies to you know from silent pictures and how it totally you know fucked up the game for a lot of actors because they didn't didn't have a great speaking voice and uh but also the the scenes where they're just playing with where are we going to put the microphone and all the issues that they have with recording sound and then it's also a fun romantic musical so uh and i guess jean kelly was miserably sick with a cold when he did the scene where he's singing singing in the rain oh really wow yeah i might have made that up all right I'm going to tell everyone I know that fact. Yeah, he caught pneumonia.
Starting point is 00:43:19 Yeah, no, I think he really was, you know, sick at the time. But, you know, there's hardly anybody more, more talent than that guy. So he, he forged his way through it. And at one point in the movie, Debbie Reynolds, he's dropping her off. You know, he's giving her a ride, Gene Kelly. And Debbie Reynolds, when she gets to where she lives, she just says the, you know, the intersection out in a sing-songy way. she goes sunset and camden and i cannot not sing that to myself whenever i go through that into that okay so jeremy wow damn
Starting point is 00:43:59 pulls ahead outstanding yeah i'm feeling bad for chat in this moment yeah because clearly musicals are not you jam no they're not uh but one that did pop to mind okay that I think would probably be on there, a sound of music? I mean, right? Oh. That absolutely seems like that would be on there. But you know what?
Starting point is 00:44:25 No way. It turns out that a lot of grown men that write film criticism are not into such a cutesy fair. Not all. Also, it's kind of, it's weird to have a musical feature Nazi so much. Yeah, but I don't know where it actually landed because I only wrote down like the top 16 or so, but it didn't make it. In the top 16, it didn't make it? That's a left down.
Starting point is 00:45:00 That is wild to hear. Wow. But Chad, this is exciting because I always enjoy it when somebody goes three for three without getting any. What I can do. We'll see if you can pull that off. I'm not going to name names, but one of the business casual dudes did it last week. Okay, so Padgett, we're back to you. What's your second guess?
Starting point is 00:45:26 My second guess is White Christmas. Oh. Interesting. Critics love that shit. I think. Right? Critics love that shit. They love that shit on a stick.
Starting point is 00:45:41 What's her name? name was too skinny did love it what who is the lady and i know it's bin crosbie right it's bin crosbie and danny k and rosemary cluny and i don't know the fourth gal's name but she it has like an 18 inch waist and they sadly with a big she has like a like a round face and so i think she just figured she had to starve herself for the and then they put a little tiny belt it looks like a cat's harness like around her waist And I can't remember her name. She was this dancer.
Starting point is 00:46:16 Okay. She was a big dancer. It's got to be on the list. It's got to be on the list. I mean, I love that, you know, the hopeful approach, but it did not, you know, it could be very close. You know, like, this top 10 is all like 98, 99, 100% reviews on the thing, you know, like, these are all nine, you know, these are all nine, you know. scores of 90. So I'm sure white Christmas fared well,
Starting point is 00:46:47 but just not well enough. But, you know, you're not out of this because Jeremy needs to, you know, hit another binger. Jeremy, do it. I feel decent about this next pick because it did win, if I'm remembering correctly, won an Academy Award
Starting point is 00:47:04 and that's Chicago. Oh, I mean, right? Is it? That should absolutely be on the list. I don't like to tell you know as a super solid movie that it did win best picture and I think the reviews were probably quite good because it did a thing that even Chad might be admire even me or appreciate is that whenever they're singing it's like a fantasy like they don't it's not like where they're like in real settings and then they just suddenly burst into something. song it's like each song is like a number just sort of acting out and singing about the thing that's going on and it's uh you know the way the movie plays it is is very clever in making it i think that's why it's palatable to a lot of people who don't like musicals plus you know
Starting point is 00:48:00 katherine zita jones jumping around is you know you can't argue with that yeah yummy yummy she got the best supporting actress for that i think all right But, Jeremy, you're still in the lead. You're still in a fairly comfortable lead. Paget needs to come with another one to get there. But Chad is a spoiler at this point because you could take away one of the big ones if you can manage. I ain't going to do that. I'm just going to go with my, you know, I'm just going to go with my heart here.
Starting point is 00:48:37 And I'm sure it's not on the list, but I love this movie. and I'm going to say a little shop of horrors. Fun. Oh. Yeah. It's not on there. It's not on there. It's not on there.
Starting point is 00:48:50 But it's great. Yeah. This list is nutty. I love Chad that there is a musical that you do like a lot. And particularly that one because it is, it does fall into like, you know, the kind of dark. Yeah. There's dark comedy and horror to it. But then there's Rick Moranus too.
Starting point is 00:49:09 Yeah. And the great. the great Rick Moranis, and there's a, you know, a production, off-Broadway production of Little Shop now. It's been running for several years because they just insert new stars every few months from film and television and Broadway. And I love it. So anybody that's in New York via a chance to see that, it's a very, very entertaining production. I saw Jonathan Groff as Seymour, and Jonathan Groff has a tendency to spit when these things. So it's fun watching the people in the front row just constantly wincing because
Starting point is 00:49:46 he's spitting on them. You're like, why doesn't the plant eat him? Like, he should be the first to go. But then the movie, if I could say this about the movie, is that I think they did an okay job of adapting it into a movie, but it still feels kind of like a play. It still feels stagey because they don't have a lot of sets you know and like but but some amazing stuff in there like Steve Martin as the sadistic dentist and
Starting point is 00:50:17 the scene with Bill Murray as this patient is classic and it's a very entertaining movie but they tried to film the ending that's different from the stage show the stage show he based the plant just basically eats everybody but in the movie
Starting point is 00:50:34 they made this big whole sequence where a bunch of plants take over the earth and it was like a 50 sci-fi movie with like these plants running around eating everything and the effects weren't that great and it was also like the ending tested poorly
Starting point is 00:50:54 so they scrapped it but like I think on a DVD you know a DVD extra or something you could see it but Chad I'm giving you a silent clap right now thank you for your tremendous work here on this show in general but specifically this game because you named three great musicals that did not make the list that happens
Starting point is 00:51:19 that's a tragedy yeah i was surprised about sound of music true yeah yeah i thought that would be there well wait till you hear these i i tried to warn you it's going to be tough padgett west side story oh wow wow wow wow dog which one the first one not the new one I'm sorry I did not mean to sound disparaging no right I like it I like any
Starting point is 00:51:46 shit talk of the new one because I I feel like the first movie was so great and perfect exactly why I make it again and then I don't get it definitely you know and a great film like like Spielberg like get your own stupid story but he also in my opinion
Starting point is 00:52:02 like I guess it's smart filmmaking to take the things that were, you know, some of the things that were great about the first movie and just copy them, but it is a little too much of that for, for, for my taste. And then same problem that the, the first movie kind of has is that, uh, the, the guy playing Tony isn't that compelling. You know, the main romantic, the woman is fantastic and then the guys is sort like, eh. Um, so, uh, swinging a miss for Spielberg for me, but I've, I've seen lots of people that really go to the mat saying that he approved the original.
Starting point is 00:52:41 And I'm just like, okay. I'm like, you can die on that hill, but I'm going to lay down on the ground and die comfortably. It's not on the list, page. What? Wow. Okay. Okay. All right.
Starting point is 00:52:55 Yeah. Are we done? Did we all guess three times? Well, Jeremy gets one more guest. He gets one more? He wants to just rub salt in the wound because he won. He already is the winner. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:53:07 But do you have one more, Jeremy? I want to give it a try. I think it could be on there. Let's go with Willy Wonka in the Chocolate Factory. I feel like it got pretty decent reviews, but also might have been kind of thought of as a kid's movie or something. So it didn't make it. Is it Charlie in the Chocolate Factory?
Starting point is 00:53:29 Well, that was the Tim Burton one. Wait, which one's Willy Wonka in the chocolate? Willie Wonka. Is that the Johnny Depp one? Yeah, that's the Tim, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. Oh, oh, no. Yeah, no, that one I'm mad at.
Starting point is 00:53:45 That's another one that didn't need to be remade. True. Because the original, yeah. The original works. All the effects are good. All of the acting is fantastic. All these shitty kids are super shitty. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:53:57 You know, like in the new one, it's like, it's not even about the kids anymore. It's about how, why is Johnny Depp acting like Michael Jackson? You know? that's what he based his performance off of, it feels like. Jeremy, congratulations. Yeah. Since you won, and before I tell you the rest of these stunning results, do you have anything?
Starting point is 00:54:18 Well, of course, you've got something you want to plug. You're going to be over at the Elysian in Los Angeles. Yeah, that's my main plug. If you're going to hear one plug, hear that one from me. But also check out my podcast is the Business Casual show with the aforementioned sketch group. Hopefully we will mend. differences and make more episodes. But you can find that, you know, anywhere you find podcasts.
Starting point is 00:54:42 It's a fun show. Doug did it as well. So if you want to look for his episode, we had an absolute blast when Doug was on. We made some chicken pop rocks. Wow. And we... Yeah, Patrick, I know you like to cook and stuff. And one of the dudes on business casual, Corey Peter Lane, he figured out how to make pop
Starting point is 00:55:06 rocks that, or chicken pop rocks. That tastes like chicken? That tastes like delicious chicken, but also crackle in your mouth. It was incredible. Like dry bullion? I think that was, he like, it was, I don't want to give up the full recipe, but like,
Starting point is 00:55:21 I'm sorry. No, no, no, I don't care that much. I think you're on the right track there. He did a couple other things. It was like, it was like chicken skins blended and then like mixed with like raw pop rocks like material. That's hard work. That's great. That's, that's hard work. No, it was like it was like it was.
Starting point is 00:55:36 almost like science. It was a true Willy Wonka-esque cheetah. Wow, that's cool. It really was. Yeah, and if he could market it and sell it, I think people would love it. Because, like, it also left a really good, you know, you just put a few little, little pieces of it in your mouth and it crackles around. But then when it's done, you have the aftertaste of like you just ate a whole piece of chicken. Like, it could be like a diet.
Starting point is 00:55:59 A diet. Oh, wow. Yeah. Wow. A meal replacement system. That sounds like some Willi Wonka stuff right there Yeah
Starting point is 00:56:09 It really is All right Let me give you the stunning results Of what are the top 10 Best Reviewed musicals It's La La Land a musical I couldn't remember It is
Starting point is 00:56:20 Okay It is But it's not on the list Stop losing faith of it did Yeah Okay Stop casting We got to wrap it up
Starting point is 00:56:28 We got to do this And some plugs In two minutes or less All right Number 10 the Marks Brothers musical at night at the opera Oh, okay
Starting point is 00:56:38 Number nine Not the most recent But nearly the most recent Musical on the list From 2007, once What? That's the show That's the show
Starting point is 00:56:54 Where the same guy Since then made Sing Street And Begin Again His name's John Carney And he makes great musicals set in Ireland and once was turned into a Broadway musical and
Starting point is 00:57:08 Steve Kazee has been on this show one best actor in a musical for that show and Kristen Malati was his opposite the romantic opposite in that so I love it but surprising that it ranks so high
Starting point is 00:57:25 on the list because it's such a it's just a sweet little film it's like it's not a singing and dancing musical it's a musical because the main couple in it, sing and perform and write songs. So it's more like watching people write songs much like, yeah.
Starting point is 00:57:41 Number eight, speaking of Bradley Cooper, a star is born. Interesting. But the Judy Garland version. Yes. Okay, good. Mrs. Robert Maine. Yes. I forgot about that. Number seven, a movie I've never
Starting point is 00:57:58 seen, and I'm pretty sure I hadn't heard of until I saw it on this list and wrote it down. The Young Girls of Rokeford. I almost guessed that movie. Bullshit. Come on. Who said that? Who said that?
Starting point is 00:58:11 That was Jeremy. Oh, my God. That I can't believe it. I had the opportunity to do the pull of a lifetime. It's a great movie. I'm so glad it's on his list. From 1967. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:58:23 I mean, now it's something I got to seek out. Oh, if you like singing in the rain, this aesthetically fits the same bill. It is a beautiful. I can't believe I didn't guess. been so cool of me. Well, we all believe you, Wink. No, I love it.
Starting point is 00:58:41 I love it. Number six, it's hard to beat the debut, the motion picture debut of the Beatles, a hard day's night. I didn't even think of that.
Starting point is 00:58:53 Which is, you know, I think 90% of the singing is because they're on stage or in a recording studio. Then we did Wizard of Vaz and Padgett got, And then number four, this is like, I don't think anybody would have thought to say this,
Starting point is 00:59:07 but the pro shot of the Broadway musical Hamilton. Oh. It was extremely well reviewed, apparently. And then number three is Meet Me in St. Louis. Oh, clang, quang, quang, with the trolley. Yeah, another Julie Garland joint. And then number two, another classic black and white musical. top hat.
Starting point is 00:59:34 Okay. Top hat. And then of course, number one was singing in the rain. Great job, everybody. We got to get going. Let's do some more plugs. Chad, what do you want to promote? San Francisco Sketch Fest January 28th.
