Starting point is 00:00:00 Doug hates candy rappers screaming baby sticky seeds with 50 acid pop or kernels in his teeth. There's still not one that he won't see because Doug. Hey, hey, hey, everybody. My name is Doug and I love movies. I just had an idea to do when The Odyssey comes out, the new Christopher Nolan. Like, maybe I could do an episode of this show that, not a tribute to the Odyssey, but a tribute to Momentum. where I do everything backwards. Like we start at the end of the episode
Starting point is 00:00:39 and work our ways in the project. This is Doug Loves Movies, recording on Wednesday afternoon, July 15th. We're cutting them both in half, 2026. And my guest today are Sam Levine, Samantha Ruddy, and Nick Rutherford. Hello. Hello.
Starting point is 00:01:01 Let's meet everybody individually. alphabetically by first name, making his fourth appearance on this show, having joined us at live shows in Austin, L.A. and San Diego. It's Nick Rutherford. Hey, Nick. Hey, Doug. How's it going? Hey, Doug. Love movie, movie boys and girls. Yes, the children. Is that what we say, right? We do it for the kids. And welcome back. Your dreams are your ticket out. But what are you doing? The reason you're on the show is because you reached out and were like, hey, I'm going to be at Comic Con. We were like, great.
Starting point is 00:01:38 Let's do Douglas movies at Comic Con like we've done once before. But then you realize you don't get in town in time. I don't get in town. To do the other than a movie. Yeah, I know, which is a huge bummer. People who bought tickets for that. But what are you going to be doing? Like, what's your reason DETRA for going to Comic Con this year?
Starting point is 00:02:00 Oh, I'm going. I'm kind of going freelance. I'm going down there with the Rick and Morty crew and the president show crew. They're doing a Rick and Morty spin-off. So yeah, I'm just going down because it's a good time. I got really excited about Douglo's movies because it's a great time down there.
Starting point is 00:02:20 I mean, the crowds are incredible, but then I couldn't do it. Couldn't do it. Yeah, because it's on Wednesday. It's on what they call preview night of Comic-Con. Yeah. It's unaffiliated with Comic Con. So, like, really, you just have to be,
Starting point is 00:02:35 I've got a couple of great guests lined up that, you know, are getting into town early enough to do it. But that happens a lot to me is that that Wednesday night is too early for people to make it. And it's, I'm going to be, I'm going to, I've got, it's a good excuse. I'm going to be in New Orleans. Otherwise, I would just drive down. and then drive back up.
Starting point is 00:03:02 No, the New Orleans excuse is fantastic. So, but you'll be, is there someplace where people can stalk you at Comic Con, like are you going to be at a panel or something? No, no,
Starting point is 00:03:13 I'm going to be going to be going to, who's the celebrity that is it, Michael Keaton? I'm going to just be in disguise walking around. Oh, you're going to wear a Michael Keaton mask? Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:03:28 Yeah. I love that. I love the, celebs at Comic-Con wearing a Yeti mask or something and you know like that's what Kevin Smith allegedly does but
Starting point is 00:03:40 well thank you for I'm glad you know just the fact that we were in context about you doing it at Comic-Con gave me the idea to have you be here today so thank you for joining us and making her seventh appearance on the show
Starting point is 00:03:56 all over Zoom I think I don't think we've done a live one Latari It's comedian Samantha Ruddy. Hi. Hey, Doug. Thanks for having me. Yeah, I got to get on a live show one of these days. It's tough because I live in Philly.
Starting point is 00:04:09 Yeah, but I do them sometimes there at the helium in Philly. And it would be lovely to have you. And it was a great coincidence that I reached out to you this week. I just sort of magically thought what's going on with Samantha Reddy. And then you set a quick. yes to doing this today because you've got some shows to promote. Yes, I do. I'm going to be in Philly where I live doing a Sam and Friends show at the Punchline in August on the 20th. And then I'm going to be in Boston on August 7th at the comedy studio. And I'm very excited about both of those
Starting point is 00:04:50 shows, but I also have not promoted them enough. So this was perfect. What's the comedy studio? It's a comedy club? Yeah, the comedy studios in Boston or as people who go to Harvard like to call it. And very, very fun, small-ish venue. They've had a lot of locations. They used to be in the attic of a Chinese food restaurant in the 90s and 2000s and most of the 2010s, but they recently relocated to a basement room that is pretty great. Wait, but that restaurant was famous, like that Comedy Club restaurant was famous like
Starting point is 00:05:27 when Stephen Wright started. What was it called? A lot of history. And honestly, it was one of my favorite rooms is like a very young comic because they, I don't know if they still do this, but they used to give you a CD-ROM with a seven-minute tape of your set. So it was just like, back in like the late night, you know, days, it was just like a factory for like getting people on because they just gave you this perfect take. I don't think they still do that. No.
Starting point is 00:05:53 I still do it either. But wouldn't that be fun with the revival of digital? Oh, God. I wish they gave you a VHS. Yeah. What's the restaurant called, though? It had a very classic, like, Chinese-sounding name. Yes, God.
Starting point is 00:06:11 I don't think anybody's comfortable guessing. I guess a drink of scorpion bowls there. They were amazing. It was like not wing chungs or ding fangs or wong sues, but something like that. I guess that was comfortable guessing. Yeah, no. I mean, it doesn't sound great, but it was a...
Starting point is 00:06:34 It's like a stereotypical kind of name, but I don't know what it is. Yeah. And I'm definitely not going to guess. But legendary, legendary for launching comedians and also being, you know, having an unusual name for a comedy spot. He has appeared on this show too many times to count. Ah, uh, ah, ah.
Starting point is 00:06:57 It's Sam the ma'am, everybody. Levine, if you will. Of all the cities, all the cities and theaters you've done this show in, do you have a favorite? That's a great question. I really like the show we did it,
Starting point is 00:07:19 helium in Philly and Philly, actually. Yeah, there you go. That's a great room. You're in Philly doing no harm. Dr. Faye Sands is Paula Tompkins used to call it. Dr. face hand. It was called,
Starting point is 00:07:32 do no harm. It was called, do no harm. Who was the main surgeon? Steve, Stephen Pesqual. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:40 Very handsome and charming, Stephen Pasquan. I love him from his Broadway work. Great actor and singer. All right. And he's Philip Asu
Starting point is 00:07:51 is his lady. I don't know. Did you know that? I'm telling you that. I take your word for it. Yeah. For them. Yeah,
Starting point is 00:07:59 that's what I say. Thank you for joining this once again, Sam. And you know what's coming next. So I'm going to make you go first. Sure. This is the part of the show where I ask each one of my guests to recommend one movie. Last week there was some confusion. People thought it had to be a current movie.
Starting point is 00:08:19 It does not. It could be any movie from the history of movies, but preferably something that people could see. Don't be thrown around the Jerry Lewis Holocaust movie. The day the clown cried. Yeah, that's not available, Sam. You can't recommend it. If you know the right people, it's available. Yeah, well, that's the thing.
Starting point is 00:08:40 My listeners don't necessarily know the right people. All right, I won't recommend it again. But I will recommend the James L. Brooks classic broadcast news. Wow. that's a nice one yeah that's a really good movie it's such a fun film i think it is one of the strongest examples of three tremendous actors at their absolute best uh holly hunter albert brooks william hurt uh it's such a fun movie it's um it's one of my favorites it may be my favorite uh movie of james zell brooks but uh it occurred to me in a conversation with some friends over the
Starting point is 00:09:28 weekend. A lot of people, it feels like they didn't see it. And so I encourage anyone who loves movies to seek it out and enjoy the hell out of it. Yeah, your current generations, I don't know what the draw would be necessarily, unfortunately, because so many amazing people involved in that movie and so many awards. But also, like, you really got to get into the characters. because the storyline is like we've now we've experienced it over and over again and unfortunately too much in the current times the story of the you know vacant newsman like the newsman who's just a handsome enough to sit there and read a teleprompter but tremendous movie like just the amount of quotes you know without being obnoxious about it because like i feel like it with cameron crow first few movies. He did a good job of making everything seem real but also amazing
Starting point is 00:10:34 quotes. But then eventually he became the guy who just his screenplay was full of too many quotes that were supposed to be amazing. But in the case of broadcast news and James L. Brooks just the most amazing sentences that things are said in that movie that are just useful
Starting point is 00:10:50 for the rest of your life. I certainly hope you die soon. Is a great. Just say somebody very politely when they've been rude to you. But anyway, I can go on about this movie forever. Albert Brooks, I've just an absolute, you know, he's one of my absolute favorites, and he's amazing in it.
Starting point is 00:11:14 I should point out. He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Yeah, and I saw him do a talk back recently for that Ella McKay movie. That's absolutely awful. And he was, he talked about his acting career and how, you know, when he did that movie Drive and he played the villain, like he really thought,
Starting point is 00:11:39 now I'm set, now people will come to me to play villains, and then it didn't happen. But maybe because they thought, well, he's so perfect as the villain is in this one, excuse the expression, vehicle,
Starting point is 00:11:54 that they, just decided let's let's move on from him as a villain he could just search for Nemo over and over again okay Samantha what would you like to recommend
Starting point is 00:12:12 I'm going current I've been going to the movies a lot recently because I've had a lot of time and I loved the drama so much and I absolutely think people should go see it. I think there's been, I just saw the invite as well, which I feel is spiritually
Starting point is 00:12:34 very related to the drama and that they're both kind of interpersonal horrors, but also really darkly funny. And they're also kind of, in some ways, could be a play. There's like four characters of both. Yeah. I love the drama. The drama is fun. It's such a funny concept, and I don't want to spoil anything, but it's just an insane thing to make an entire movie out of. Well, and they did a great job of in the marketing. Like, you know, I know it wasn't a huge
Starting point is 00:13:06 hit or anything, but you still got people to come because they really gave so little away in the trailer and the posters and stuff. Still more than I would like to see because it was clearly like about, you know, a coupling gone wrong for some reason.
Starting point is 00:13:25 But it was still, you know, I thought it was, I appreciated that they, you know, held back a little bit. I've just been seeing, whenever I stumble onto a trailer lately, I'm just stunned at how they just lay out the entire story, especially if it's a rom-com, they really make, they really need to show you the couple that may or may not get together, just straight up getting together. They, like, show you the shot at the end of the movie.
Starting point is 00:13:53 It's, it's so crazy. Wait, Doug, are you, are you someone who, have. voice trailers because I also avoided. Oh yeah, I don't watch it at all. Yesterday, the other day Alicia and I went to the movies and we were running late so we knew it was risky
Starting point is 00:14:10 but we walked in the second the movie started. No Nicole Kidman, no Fast and Furious Coca-Cola ad, no discussion of lasers and light and how great they are and no trailers or commercials. We just walked in and the movie started.
Starting point is 00:14:26 It was just beautiful. Um, that's ideal. Yeah, I, but the trailers, yeah, I, you know, I bitch about it all the time because, you know, especially great filmmakers will just like come out and go watch the trailer for my movie. And it's just like, no, just say watch my movie. Like, just jump to that. Like, don't, like, trailers are just so ruinous, I think, of the experience. Um, and, uh, yeah, so I, I skip them or, fortunately, I, I don't feel, I don't feel guilty. looking at my phone and you know
Starting point is 00:15:00 fucking around on it during trailers because the house lights are half up and lots of people are still seated sitting and people are chatting amongst themselves so that's what I do now is I just if I'm forced to watch trailers I sit look at my phone the whole time but even
Starting point is 00:15:16 this even hearing things is you know you get too much is revealed in my opinion yeah I agree all right what's your oh so you're going with uh Yeah, going with the drama.
Starting point is 00:15:29 But you also like the invite. Oh, I love the invite. I loved both of them. But the drama, I think, is out on streaming, so it's, like, more accessible right now. Yeah, and also, like, more likely to be forgotten at this point because it came out early in the year. Yeah, yeah, it came out a little earlier. There's a lot of Oscar buzz for the invite, but I just wonder if it can really make it to the finish line when there's, like, you know, six months left. It was a bad time to release that movie, I think.
Starting point is 00:16:05 Especially with Moana out now. Oh, frickin' Mawana is tanking. Mawares are really... That's one trailer I did. Like, I can watch the Mawanna trailer because I fucking saw Mawanna already. So I know what happens in Mawada. And I watched the trailer for that.
Starting point is 00:16:25 And it's just like, it's kind of like when what's his name, Gus Van Zand did the shot-for-shot psycho. It's just absolutely psycho that Moana is like, we'll do it shot for shot, but the rock, as greatest his eyebrow work is, is not nearly as expressive as an animated character.
Starting point is 00:16:50 Yeah. So it's like a downgrade from how entertaining that character is. It's so stupid. Maybe they should have done a shot. shop-for-shot remake again of Psycho, but with the characters from Moana. See, that's the creativity we're looking for. Okay. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:08 I know a lot of industry people listen to this podcast to get ideas, so I think we will see this. Great. Yeah, they don't need my podcast. All they need to do is find their local neighborhood AI. What would you like to recommend, Nick? Well, there's two ones, but I'm curious if any of them gotten brought up here. I just recently saw Maddie's Secret. Love it.
Starting point is 00:17:35 Love it. It's great. It's John Early. Cape Verland, of course. I think Vanessa Bear is incredible in it. And it's just a fun, small, weird little movie. And I just can't recommend it enough. I'm a big champion of like little movies that could, you know.
Starting point is 00:17:50 And maybe this isn't even that little, but it's little enough. It's super little because, you know, as great as John, early as he's like you know kind of a niche you know all of his successes so far of any kind of like quirky underground things
Starting point is 00:18:07 yeah Vimeo staff even like even like search party didn't ever really get that big even though it's got a really devoted following but just just the absolute sincerity of like nobody can be like
Starting point is 00:18:21 oh that guy fucking took apart from a woman or or he's making fun of women like just the absolute sincere way in which he plays the title character, Maddie. And then on top of that, how sincerely but also hilarious the secret is? You know what I mean? Yeah, yeah. The whole thing is really good.
Starting point is 00:18:45 It's really well done. And I accept that as your answer, but I will, you did say you had a second movie. Yeah, well, I'm sure you've seen this, Doug. Have you seen the Napa Boys? Yes. Yeah. Okay. That's the other.
Starting point is 00:18:59 Yeah. The Napa Boys and Maddie's Secret are really like, that would be an amazing double bill. Yeah. Because they're movies that are constantly like, like just toggling around between like, you know, hard jokes and then just fucking with the audience. You know, like, and just making fun of the slimmest of genre. You know, because Navajo Boys is just making fun of sequels that didn't need to happen. Yeah. You know, and Maddie's Secret is making fun of, you know, made-for-TV movies about, you know, people's personal drama.
Starting point is 00:19:42 And they're both like so funny, but you could also imagine, you know, somebody hating it because it's just something that some people are just not going to get. I think it's very polarizing. Like somebody was like, I don't get it. Maddie's secret is just supposed to be like a hallmark movie? And I was like, well, yes, but no, it's a hard sell. Yeah, because it's not directly a parody. It's just more or less aping the style for like to make you smile. But then the jokes are just the little weird touches that happen.
Starting point is 00:20:13 It's brilliant. Paperland is so funny in that movie. The tone that she captures with her character, the way she's always just so unnecessarily ramped up. And it's fantastic about everything. but then also just so easily, you know, hurt. I know. And then the guy who plays Maddie's husband or maybe boyfriend,
Starting point is 00:20:35 I think husband, is so good too and so subdued and understated. Eric, Eric Rahil, I don't know to say it. I don't know. It's just perfectly cast across the board. I wasn't familiar with that guy, but yeah, he was great. He was great. The way that, like, every time she came home or they'd cut to him, he'd be, like, lifting, doing weights.
Starting point is 00:20:54 And he's so supportive. He's like the most supportive guy ever. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. All right. Well, I will be seeing none of these recommendations because I have seen them all already. But I do also confirm that they're all worth watching. And I probably will see them again some day.
Starting point is 00:21:17 We did it, gang. We gave three or five great recommendations. Yeah. We should all feel pretty proud of it. ourselves and go ahead and put yourself in the arm like Anthony Michael Hall at the end of Breakfast Club. We'll be right back. I like that it's all in one place. I know. I like that I don't have to go around, you know, to like different stores or something. It's just all in my website. Well, it's like, oh, do I need to go to like a, do I need another type of website? to like find the right pictures or like another type of website to upload the,
Starting point is 00:23:30 no, it's all in one place. The video or the audio or like, no, I want, it makes it easy, make it easy on me, please. Yes, and you can do all those things, photos, videos, changing fonts. You know what I mean, the designs are amazing. They're catering to all your different needs. There are SEO tools, which I know what those are, and they're custom domains. Oh, what's come up with a domain right now. Let's see.
Starting point is 00:23:51 I wonder for it exists. www. Friends. Meeting. Friends. FriendsmeetingFriends.com. That's an original thing that we came up with. Friends meeting friends.
Starting point is 00:24:03 Anyway, so check out Squarespace.com slash Edgum for a free trial. And when you're ready to launch, use offer code headgum. Save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain. Hell, sounds easy. Anybody could do it. We're back. Say it, Sam.
Starting point is 00:24:19 We're back. A dinosaur story. Our first game today. Our first game today is called, Whose tagline is it anyway? Oh, boy. I'll say a tagline from a film, and you have to guess what film it is.
Starting point is 00:24:35 Yep, it's not easy, because it's from all the films ever made. But some taglines are more descriptive than others. Some of these will be... Most of them won't be easy, but there is an easy one on occasion because I do want somebody to win. And there is a theme.
Starting point is 00:24:55 So start with you, Nick. I'll tell you the tagline for the movie. You guess what it is? If you miss, then Samantha gets a guess. If Samantha misses and Sam gets a guess, and if all three of you miss, we'll just move on to the next one. But when somebody gets one right,
Starting point is 00:25:12 the next person in line goes first on the next tagline. Okay. Yeah, I'm ready. What movie has the tagline, the more you look, The more you find. Oh, I know, I'm going to guess the Da Vinci Code. It's a little, you know, it's a little about that.
Starting point is 00:25:39 But it can be any movie. So by your laughter, I'm guessing it wasn't correct. I guess, yeah, you could really, you're right about that. That's the, that's my issue with taglines a lot of the times, is that they really could describe too many movies. and not more specifically the one in question. But that is incorrect. You're right about the laughter.
Starting point is 00:26:04 Right, right, right. Samantha. First instinct, Osmosis Jones. I don't think so. Why was that the first instinct? I don't know. Because I'm clearly not evolved enough for this game. but I think maybe
Starting point is 00:26:24 I think there was an I spy movie so I'm gonna go with that there was an I spy movie oh yeah movie called I spy I thought my head I splashed on Mad magazine Spy versus Spy but yeah I spy they made a movie of it with
Starting point is 00:26:41 Luke Wilson and Annie Murphy I think early 2000s yeah yeah yeah that's not the answer but I'm supposed to be a good tagline what is it Sam. Oh, obviously, it's
Starting point is 00:26:55 Now You See Me Three, now you don't. There's no three in the title. It's just Now You See Me Cold. Now You Three Me. Now you don't. Or it should have been called. Well, that's the best guess Because that's the most recent movie, because this is a film that's in theaters now that everybody's all talking, talking about, called Backrooms.
Starting point is 00:27:21 Oh. Oh, that makes sense. Back rooms. Yeah. Yeah, no, it really describes what's going to happen. And it's also kind of a warning, I think, because I know I didn't, I could have gone with several less rooms. Yeah, they think they hit one too many rooms by the end there. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:41 Though they're really, how many more can there be for the sequel? Well, they're doing the opposite of aliens. The sequel is back room. And it's just one little room. Yeah. The budget is going to be like, you know, almost all the way. Yeah, but they're going to make so much money, though. Is that giant guy going to be in that one little room?
Starting point is 00:28:07 He's going to wave from a window outside of it. But they don't want to pay for the whole thing. Yeah. The back room's locked out. The back rooms is probably the most boring but also tense movie I've ever seen. like I you know I felt the tension but I also was like okay get on with it you know like yeah but when she would have it would be so weird and scary that it was like you know I didn't hate it uh all right Nick here's round two uh just because you're invited doesn't mean you're welcome
Starting point is 00:28:44 all right that's just me talking to you Nick now here right right I know but I'm happy to be here I know that was it just because you're in invited doesn't mean you're welcome. Okay. There is a theme. So think about backrooms. Right. What other movie could be related to backrooms in someone.
Starting point is 00:29:03 Right. Okay. Well, I am looking at words in the title, backrooms. And the invited part made me think it's the invite, but we talked about it. So I don't think you would have picked that one.
Starting point is 00:29:16 But I'm going to go with backdraft, the movie because it's like the you know the firefighters were invited to this house to put the fire out but when they opened the door uh-oh they weren't really welcome you're not welcome we're gonna blow fire right in your face you dumb fireman yeah so uh it doesn't sound like i like your math but i don't like your answers samantha um can i get it used in a sentence no uh can i get it can you repeat it yeah just because you're invited doesn't mean you're welcome. It makes me think of like get out. The movie? Oh. Is that your answer?
Starting point is 00:30:03 Yeah. Yeah. I know it's wrong with that. There's that your wrong laugh again. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. There it is. But in this case, she's right.
Starting point is 00:30:15 What? It's get out. It's get out, yeah. Ha ha, yes. I'm never right on this game, so I'm very excited about it. You did it this time. yeah at one of several
Starting point is 00:30:28 taglines for that movie so I don't know if I don't know if it was the one they got the most play I feel like there was something more another one that was more clever than that but
Starting point is 00:30:37 do you have them available now I don't know I threw them right in the garbage so Samantha's got a point Sam you're up first in this next round okay Sam what movie
Starting point is 00:30:51 Sam Levine Sam Levine what movie had the tagline every dog has his day okay why are you laughing because it's such a common expression no I know it is
Starting point is 00:31:09 and that's part of the problem with taglines is the people who write them are not as creative as the people who make the movie that they write them for but every dog has his day every dog I don't know how that's a common expression in your life Sam would mean
Starting point is 00:31:24 what in the 1940s horse track I live on I think I would call my next special Every dog has his day There you go
Starting point is 00:31:35 Every dog is I think if there's anything Theatically That keeps with Every dog has his day We got get out In back rooms so far Get Out
Starting point is 00:31:47 Backrooms Leave Men don't leave No I can't be right I don't know Baltho I really I mean, yeah, I guess
Starting point is 00:31:59 I guessing a movie has a dog in it It's a smart way to go But seems like that's weird It's not balto Okay Nick Oh, I'm up I think I think
Starting point is 00:32:10 I'm gonna say I don't I believe this is a movie Came out and maybe last year or this year Uh Kind of a festival darling that nobody liked after that I believe it's called Good Boy Oh yeah Whether it's the whole movie is from the point of view of the dog or
Starting point is 00:32:27 Yeah And it's like a horror film. So I'm trying to go with the theme here and dog stuff. But I'm not getting a laugh to really gauge one way or the other. It's like the dog version of Home Alone. Did you watch it? Did you see it? No, I haven't seen it.
Starting point is 00:32:43 But the dog is the villain in it, I think. Oh. I'm not sure. The dog fucks people up? I'm not sure. See. All right. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:32:52 Well, you know, it seems like it would be his day because it feels like he's kind of the focus of it. Sure. No. Or she. That dog has. a lot of days, but that's not the answer. Samantha? Dog movies are not my genre,
Starting point is 00:33:08 but I have to say, if it's not Air Bud, I'll kill myself. Well, please do not unalive yourself. Wait, is there a movie called, if it's not Airbud, I'll kill myself? Because there should be.
Starting point is 00:33:25 And it's Sam's the one that should kill himself. Yeah. Over this one. Is it strays? No. Oh, that's a good one. It's going to be the worse for you, Sam. Because you're not in it, but you're Jason.
Starting point is 00:33:40 It's reservoir dogs. What? I have never heard that sagline associated with that film. Yeah, maybe somebody just went on IMDB and typed that in, like, you know, make believe. Yeah. Like as a, let's go to work. As a Frank. is the more well-known.
Starting point is 00:34:02 I feel like, yeah, I feel like that answer bumped everybody out at Reservor dogs. Yeah, also I was confused because I think it's, I think it's let's go work. Yeah, let's go to work. Let's go to work. On Jeopardy's say, let's go to work. Anyway.
Starting point is 00:34:19 All right. Okay, so nobody got that one. And so we're back to you, Sam. Okay. Tagline, one movie had the tagline. Time to full. fly. Oh, man.
Starting point is 00:34:36 You what are doing? Now, maybe I'm confusing movies with airlines. Time to fly. Oh, man. I don't know. They were movie about, you know, flying and how it's about to happen. Oh, oh, oh, fly away home.
Starting point is 00:34:56 Oh, great, great guess. That's not it. visit. No. No, that's a great We had fun. We had fun. That was a great guess. Nick? I'm going to say
Starting point is 00:35:12 Stully. Because I bet that's what he said right before it hit the water. Yeah, well, they don't want to spoil the whole movie. Yeah. But also time to fly. be like the bird's POV
Starting point is 00:35:34 right who's jumping into the jet engine it's fun that there's that that incident didn't have any casualties you know because you can make any jokes you want about it nobody can get bad of you yeah the plane was killed duck
Starting point is 00:35:52 yeah that's true but planes don't have feelings I think the bird I think the bird said let's let's get to work before flying into the engine yeah because they hate plane They were like, let's do our thing. Yeah, I'll take this one, boys. Do you have a guess?
Starting point is 00:36:13 Did you guess something already? Who? Me? Yeah. Yeah, I was Scully. Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:36:20 You're saying Scully, not Sully? Wait, what is it? It's sully. There's no. No, I guess I'm talking about something else. It's silly, but we all do. We all, I just started talking about it. I didn't hear him until he said it again.
Starting point is 00:36:33 Scully obviously is, of course, from the X-Files. Yeah. Right. Yeah, yeah. So I guess I was talking about the other one. I want to believe. Can you believe that lady from the X-Files
Starting point is 00:36:43 crossed the plane into the Hudson? I mean, yeah. She's not a pilot. She's an FBI agent. What was she doing? She is an FBI agent. So, Sam, did you guess?
Starting point is 00:37:01 I did. I said fly away home and it wasn't right. No, there's two Sam. It's confusing. You got to linger on that second M, Doug. Yeah. Sam, Sam, I'm single L.M. And I don't really, I mean, my guess was going to be silly, so I'm just going to go March the Penguins because it kind of makes me laugh.
Starting point is 00:37:17 Yeah, that's funny or happy feet. It would have been good. This one, I don't remember this being associated with it, but it kind of makes the name and the character make a little bit more sense in a way that I never thought about before. It's a ladybird. I think that's very that's a much more poetic tagline
Starting point is 00:37:41 than there normally is to say time to fly because she's you know leaving the nest in the movie but I never thought about she just called herself Lady Bird I just thought she was nutty I didn't realize that that's you know she's calling yourself Lady Bird
Starting point is 00:37:56 because she just wants to escape anyway she flew out of that car on the highway yeah no that scene is fucking crazy and then Steve Perel does the same thing in crazy stupid love. I'm just like throwing yourself from a moving car is really,
Starting point is 00:38:12 that's a wild impulsive decision. All right. 20-10s, it was very fashionable. Yeah, yeah, it was all the rage. Okay, so Sam, are you ready for your next one? Oh, God. Sure. Yeah, we got to go a little faster because I still have one more game to play after this.
Starting point is 00:38:30 Okay, all right. But Sam, he didn't come looking for trouble, but trouble came looking for him. That sounds so familiar. He didn't come looking for trouble. Oh, I think I know this one, Doug. Oh, boy, you're next if Sam doesn't get it. I can't.
Starting point is 00:39:01 It's terrible because I'm thinking, is it, no. All right. I think it's called Regular Joe. No. It's like a Tim Allen movie now. No. But also, like, it's funny that Nick thinks he knows it because. You're positive I don't know it.
Starting point is 00:39:15 There's a thousand movies about someone. looking for trouble and then finding it. Yeah, but this one specifically is about a person who did not want to look for trouble. Right. Well, you've never seen that movie where the cop is ready to retire? Oh, that's true. Okay, fine. That's fair.
Starting point is 00:39:32 That's fair. But anyway, but what's your guess? Well, I'm thinking this person wasn't looking for trouble because he was a celebrated war veteran. And we're talking about Rambo First Blood. That is a great guess, but that's not it. Sam, who do you think? Because he just wanted, you know, the small town cops came to him. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:39:51 He wasn't looking for trouble. No, it's a perfect, perfect tagline for that, but. I know it's still wrong, but I believe the film I was actually thinking is called Joe Somebody. Oh, okay. But Samantha, what's your guess? What I really don't know. Do March of the Penguins again. Does it help?
Starting point is 00:40:17 Yeah, you could do March the Penguins again. I'm just trying to think of like A movie that's about one guy You know so hard to do But I think I'm gonna I don't know Wait I don't think this is it But can I give Samantha a line
Starting point is 00:40:34 A lifeline Sure No Samantha's trying to guess the departed because she doesn't know Okay Well forget the lifeline then Didn't you get it wrong Samantha, I'm trying to help you.
Starting point is 00:40:50 She's trying to help you, but. Well, I don't think that this is probably not it, because every time I'm confident about an answer on this show, it's always not it. There's no way anyone's going to get this one. I'll tell you that. Does it star The Rock? No.
Starting point is 00:41:06 It's a lot of live action. Are you give up, Samantha? Yeah, I'm going with the departed. Okay. Oh, the departed. Great job. that's my urge to get up. Departed would be a funny movie to have a tagline
Starting point is 00:41:21 this is he a couple of times like well which character are they referring to even figure it out. My wife had never seen the departed and we just watched it together for the first time and she thought that Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon were the same guy for like the first 45 minutes. I mean
Starting point is 00:41:40 I like like a different time periods or she just has face blindness. They have the same haircut and they kind of look-a-leg in it. Yeah, I could see that. I could totally see that. It's a confusing movie, even if you know the difference
Starting point is 00:41:54 between those two guys. Yeah. I just know the bottom line is that rats are bad. Oh, yeah. Okay, so Samantha wins that game, and the, he didn't come looking
Starting point is 00:42:10 for trouble. Trouble came looking for him is the tagline from El Mariachi. oh wow yeah which was Robert Rodriguez's first film lady bird was what's her names Greta Greta's first film Resboard Dogs was Quentin's first film
Starting point is 00:42:31 Get Out was Jordan's first film and backroo's was that guy's first movie it's all first movies from what a theme big directors yeah that's a tough one to figure out but but Sam was our winner and then just to make Sam laugh though Sam with two of them's
Starting point is 00:42:51 the timebreaker because I had to have a winner but I also had to have one where it's you know you've got to figure out like you just kind of have to guess because the last one was going to be Peewee Herman in dot dot dot
Starting point is 00:43:09 dot Peewee's big adventure yeah the one but you know what I mean It could have been Big Top Pee-Wee. It could have been return of Pee-Wee. You know what I mean? It could have been any of them. Any of those three films.
Starting point is 00:43:24 Yeah, but that was the big selling point of that Pee-We-Herman film was that Pee-Wy Herman was in it. All right. Congratulations, Samantha. You're going to go first in our next game that we're going to play after the break. We'll be right back. We are. we are back A D-S
Starting point is 00:43:49 Our game that determines It all today is called The Little Search Engine that could I typed As you'll notice With each additional game Sam's ugg gets longer Yeah
Starting point is 00:44:05 There's some I like more than others Yeah he's tired It can be really confounding I typed a word into the IMDB search engine this morning, and then I wrote down the top 10 movies, according to the IMDB algorithm, in which this word appears in the title. The three of you, once I tell you the word, we're going to start with Samantha, then go to Nick and then go to Sam. You're going to take turns naming movies that you think might be up on the board, might be in the top 10 movies today that
Starting point is 00:44:42 have that word in the title. Higher up on the list your word is, the more points you get. It's not in the top ten. No points for that round. Three rounds. We add it all up and declare a winner. Samantha,
Starting point is 00:45:01 your first and the word that's appeared in the title of a lot of movies, not a lot of good movies, but a lot of movies, the word, the word is sex S-E-X
Starting point is 00:45:18 Hmm Okay What do you think What do you think is like the most searched movie title with the word Sex in it Are we going to get sex as well Should I be thinking of sex right now?
Starting point is 00:45:39 Yeah, it's all sex Okay, it's all sex Okay Yeah, so you can think ahead You can use this time to think And you know If you think of more than one think of, you know, you only get one at a time, so you have to think of which one might have the most impact.
Starting point is 00:45:54 Because you want to steal from, you know, Sam's already sitting there probably thinking he knows, but number one is. I got, I got like 40 movies already in my head. Oh, my God, he's got 40, he's got 40 sex movies because he's a sex movie addict. Yep. What's your first guest, Samantha? Sex and the City movie. Sex in the City The movie was number seven on the list
Starting point is 00:46:23 So that is that is worth Four points Wow Four points for Sam Nick what's your What's your first guess? My first guess is Sex Lies and Videotape
Starting point is 00:46:39 Oh look at you Yeah that's impressive It is it is number five on the list and that means that you got six points for that okay okay thank you Doug thank you Doug I needed that yeah you really did Sam well first
Starting point is 00:47:01 I'm gonna go with a previously used strategy and say Gail Daughtry and the celebrity sex pass you know that's pretty sneaky say the name of a movie that just came out even in limited release and people are out there wondering about it it's got an amazing cast
Starting point is 00:47:25 our friend John Hamm is in it and so naturally it is number one on the list I can't recover from this Doug Sam goes straight to the lead with 10 points well here's the thing Nick is you can recover from this
Starting point is 00:47:43 You should see the list of sex movies I'm writing down. None of them are real. Well, you know, I've given this tip to people during this game before, so I'll give it to you again. Or, you know, you for the first time. Sometimes the title in the top ten is just, you know, an expression or, you know what I mean? It's like just something that has the word sex in it. You know, it could be like some weird foreign film or something, but. You know, never heard to just to just get some sort of phrase that has the word sex there.
Starting point is 00:48:17 Like, as an example, if he said sex on the beach, like, there's a pretty good chance there's a movie with that title. Gotcha, gotcha, gotcha. But anyway, Sam, what's your next guess? I go with Sex Drive. Sex Drive. Oh, I audition for that movie. Okay. I think Matt Damon's in it.
Starting point is 00:48:41 It is number three on the list. Oh, no. in Euro trip. I get sex drive and Euro trip mixed up. But sex drive is number three on the list, so that's worth eight points. So Samantha just took the lead from
Starting point is 00:48:58 Sam by two points. So Nick, this is your chance to really, you can really stay in this if you can come off a update. I just has a pretty good inspiration, but can I
Starting point is 00:49:14 Before I had that inspiration, I had an answer I wanted to give that I know what was wrong. Can I give that one first, but it doesn't count? No, you can tell us about that later. Okay, all right. And my answer is sexy beast? Sexy beast. You know what? I'm going to do your giant favor and say that every single one of these is S-E-X-no-Y.
Starting point is 00:49:44 Oh. I feel like they strictly the word But it could like I've played this game before where like sexy beast or something like that could have come up But in this case these are I want to just keep it Clear that all 10 movies just is just the word sex not dressed up in any way Okay then I'm gonna this is straight from your advice for this game I believe this must be a movie and it's called it's just sex that's a great that's a great guess but no
Starting point is 00:50:21 I don't think there's a movie I mean there may be a movie called that but it didn't it didn't finish in the top but it is like you know like Ash and Coucher and like Natalie Portman movie where they're just friends and it's just sex they're not going to you know they're not going to fall for each other
Starting point is 00:50:39 that's called friends with benefit which I believe is in a way, just set. That's actually the tagline. Yeah, that's the tagline. I'm bringing the games together. I'm tying it all. Wait, hang on. I think that's no strings attached. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:56 Oh, shit. No, Friends with benefits to no strings attached. That's Milacunis and Justin Timberlake. Right. You're impossible to keep those two apart. I think Ken Jennings keeps a card in his wallet that helps to remind himself which is which. Did those come out
Starting point is 00:51:12 like back to back? Like, Ants and bug life. Yes, they came out in very close proximity to one of the way. Yeah, okay. It was the Armageddon and Deep Impact. Right, yeah. Yeah, it was Volcano and Dante's Peak. Okay, so, Sam, we're back to you.
Starting point is 00:51:29 This is, you need to put some more points on the board. All right. I can't believe no one said it. I'm going to go with the Jason Siegel, Cambron Diaz, classic, sexed ape. Sext. Hey. I'm sorry. I may be mispronouncing.
Starting point is 00:51:48 Not about an ape who's sexting. It's not about a sex tape. It's a sex tape. It's number two on the list. Wow. Yeah. That's brutal. That's brutal.
Starting point is 00:52:01 Yeah. That really. That was nail in the coffin, I think. Yeah, that right. Well, you still have a shot at this, Sam. Nick, maybe not so much. Well, I have some inside information that the rest of you guys don't have, which is that I don't know anymore.
Starting point is 00:52:16 You're privy to that. I'm privy to some insight. So like, based on the guess, the answer so far, you got number one is Gail Dautry and celebrity sex pass. And then number two was sex tape to just mention. Then we had sex drive. So then four is wide open. And five was sex lines and videotape.
Starting point is 00:52:42 six I don't think anyone would get but maybe and then seven was sex and the city and then eight nine to ten are still still open so just give me a phrase or a title with the word sex in it and we'll see how you do
Starting point is 00:53:03 is there a second sex in the city movie I believe there is one Samantha um let me think yeah I'm going to go with Sex and the City too yes of course Sex and the City too
Starting point is 00:53:24 is on the list but the sad news is it's number eight on the list you know what that's more than what I thought that's worth three points so you've got a very impressive final score of 15 but that does not
Starting point is 00:53:40 surpass Sam's 19 wow and Nick this is just for fun now Do you have one more guess? Yeah, maybe the secret sex lives of pets. That's not. Well, it's not out yet. I don't know if it counts.
Starting point is 00:53:59 It's not what it was called, but it is funny that Louis C.K. was the voice in that. They had to bring a patent for the sequel. It's not on the list. I double-checked it. um Sam do you want to do one more just for fun just to increase your score even further I think we name them all and the only
Starting point is 00:54:22 extra one I could think of is on the basis of sex the Felicity oh yeah yeah yeah I think that was like number 11 or 12 or something like it was up there but didn't quite didn't quite make it so with 19 points Sam is our winner today Sam who would you like me to call
Starting point is 00:54:39 a shithead at the end of this showcast um how about uh Mitch McConnell's nurse. Oh. What did Mitch McConnell's nurse do?
Starting point is 00:54:52 Not break hippolars and let everybody know that he's brain dead. All right. What would you like to promote, Sam? Oh, I have something to promote. I have a new short film that is available for free online that everyone can see and it's really good. And if you go to tether shortfilm.com, T-E-T-H-E-R-Tether shortfilm.com, you can find a link for it there,
Starting point is 00:55:19 and it's super cool and fun, and it's a short film. I'm not asking for a whole lot of your time, and I think you will enjoy it, and if you enjoyed hearing my voice on this podcast, then you will also enjoy hearing my voice in the film. Oh, nice, that totally makes sense. And, yeah, and, you know, hit me up on the Douglas movie's
Starting point is 00:55:40 ex-formally Twitter account to, you know, if you watched it, let me know what you think. All right, here's the rest of, before we get to Nick and Samantha's plugs, here's the rest of the answers to this crazy sex game. I was hoping someone would just go ahead and guess, well, what about just the word sex? Because apparently in 2024, there was just a movie called sex. So anytime somebody types into the search engine,
Starting point is 00:56:12 sex on there. I'm sure this thing will come up. Those are people confused with the search engine that they're on. Yeah. Yeah. I want to know where the sex is on the international movie database.
Starting point is 00:56:28 And then number nine was a movie 2014 that I'm not familiar with called Diet of Sex. I don't know what that's about. Number six was from 2022. Another expression somebody might stumble on to, sex appeal.
Starting point is 00:56:45 But again, a movie I'm not particularly familiar with. And then number four, the only other open spots. You all did a really good job of filling in the ones that were you should have because number four, I've heard in this movie.
Starting point is 00:57:00 I've never seen it from 2001 starring Pasvega. Oh, six. And Lucia. Lucia. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, so there's that thing. There's that movie.
Starting point is 00:57:15 Samantha Rennie, what, tell us about your dates again. Yes, I'm happy to tell you about my dates again because I actually got one wrong. In Philly, my Philly show was August 12th. It's not August 20th. Don't come on August 20th unless you like that comedian. So if you want to see me in Philly, August 12th, and if you want to see me in Boston, August 7th at the Comedy Studio. Nice.
Starting point is 00:57:40 Thank you for being here. Nick Rutherford, what are you going to have a plug? Oh, when does this come out? Tonight. Okay.
