It's just after 12 p.m. on a Wednesday in Longmont. 33-year-old Jason Schaefer, a single father to a five-year-old boy, is working his usual postal route through a quiet neighborhood, just like he has countless times before. He's nearing the end of his shift and heading towards one of his final stops for the day in Somerset Meadows. Jason doesn't He doesn't know it yet, but for the past three months, someone has been tracking his movements, waiting for this exact moment, and making sure this delivery is going to be his last. Yes, hi. Our post office guy was just shot. I heard four shots and he's down. Did anyone witness this? We saw someone run. We heard four shots. I couldn't identify him. just saw a backside of a man running away after four shots.

Unfortunately, by the time officers and medics arrive, the man has stopped breathing and with CPR failing, he has rushed. to the hospital in a final attempt to save his life. Officers are now left with an unusual crime scene and far more questions than answers. They need to determine why Jason was targeted, search the surrounding area for any witnesses, and track down the unknown shooter. Officers don't know this yet, but they are running out of time because Jason isn't the only target of the shooter. At this point, the commotion in the unusually calm neighborhood causes many

residents to come out of their houses and while most of them do so out of curiosity one of the residents approaches an arriving officer claiming he has the exact information they need I need you to go that way about five or ten minutes ago I heard three fang-fam-fong-fong okay and then I saw a guy with a kind of about the deep about a sturdy guy with a jacket and Run into that direction. Hey, Pierce, last information he was running southbound and then headed southwest from Heather Hill's circle diagonally through the houses. With the neighbor confirming that the suspect was a hooded man wearing a jacket, officers believe they're looking for a male suspect. That description will soon prove dangerously misleading, But the neighbor also reveals that the suspect fled south, making the next objective for police clear, contain the area, and locate the armed suspect.

Leave it. Come on, seat. All right. Leave it. Suit. Let me take this down with her. Yep. As officers searched the neighborhood using drones and canine units,

they find no sign of the suspect. By this point, nearly an hour has passed, Yet investigators still know little about the victim or why someone would execute a mail carrier in broad daylight. So with no clear motive and few leads, they turned to the residents for answers, hoping someone knew Jason or witnessed something that could explain the shooting. Luckily, one of the residents is about to provide police with a piece of evidence that will prove crucial in identifying the shooter. I just saw the shooter running away. Okay. And I didn't see anything in his hands or anything like that. Just a jogging pace. He wasn't even running fast. He was just jogging.

I ran into my neighbor and you'll have to talk to her across the street because she actually spoke with the postman. Okay. Minutes before the shooting. Hello. Have officers been over here by chance to talk to you guys? No. When it first happened, then it... Were you out here? Did you hear, see anything? Yeah, so I was checking my mail at the same time.

That a baby didn't... Oh, hey, you're good. And I saw a guy, black, reddeny, blue-faced, mouth. Walking towards you. Oh, okay, all right. So walking towards here. And honestly, as soon as I closed my door and heard the gunshots and saw that guy take off. So here he is walking up.

Oh, he walked around, but he walked behind those houses. Then you'll hear the gunshots actually at about 15 seconds. And then he runs back that way. Must live somewhere in this neighborhood if they are coming in this way. This is exactly what officers need. Although the images are difficult to make out, detectives finally get their first look at the suspect. The dark clothing, hood, and masks support the witness's description.

More importantly, the footage shows the figure approaching the mail carrier calmly, before opening fire. There is no visible argument and no hesitation, suggesting the attack was anything but random. The shooter appears to know exactly who Jason is and exactly where he would be. As detects the footage, others contact Jason's supervisors hoping they might have an idea of who's responsible for the shooting. However, once they arrive, the officers will discover that this homicide is only one part of a much bigger, deranged plan that had been building for the past year, and that Jason's murder may have only been the beginning.

So he filed some more papers so that he could get more time. And I know she probably would have been served today. She also works for the post office, but in Loveland, she showed up one day and said she was there to help. And as soon as he left, she left. Like she didn't even help us or anything. It was weird. And then the other day I caught her. and they're going through his stuff at his case. So this is, this is Jason's, like the mother of his, of the six year old? Okay. Where's the six year old now?

Probably with the mom. With the mom. Well, what is her name? Her name is Devon. D-E-B-A-N and then it's Shiner as her last name. Jason's supervisor goes on to explain that Devin and Jason had worked at the same post office, but their arguments eventually became so serious that Devon was transferred to another location. They also learned that, coincidentally, just two days earlier, Jason had filed for full custody over their five-year-old son.

With that, police finally have their first real lead on whom I know more about what happened to Jason. But they're still only scratching the surface of how deep this entire scheme goes. If you don't do this, AJ knows where you live and he has his guns. I mean my son. I am worried about my son. I think the gig is up. People don't go around just shooting most of people. You specifically had it out for Jason. Can you explain that? As officers prepare to investigate Devin further, they receive devastating news from the hospital. Jason has died from his injuries, officially turning the investigation into a homicide.

If Devin now emerging as a possible suspect, detectives know they need to to speak with her. There's just one problem. At this point, they have no evidence connecting her to the shooting. If anything, the surveillance footage appears to point away from her, with the person fleeing the scene looking like a man. So investigators need to understand exactly what was happening between her and Jason and whether there was anyone close to them who might know something they don't. That leads them to Devin's younger sister, Rosa. Well, detectives aren't sure how much insights she'll be able to provide, they bring her to the police department for an interview. And as the interview starts, it quickly becomes clear that Rosa is someone more than investigators

initially thought and her statements are about to flip their case upside down. Hi, Rosa. Do you have a lot? You have a water and everything? Yeah. Okay. So then the beginning of this year, I moved in with her here in a lot. Wow. We lived together in her house and we had an apartment together in June. And then there's a situation between her and I.

She kicked me out. Anyways, I'm not going to. Okay. Here, Rosa reveals something the investigators never expected. It turns out, after she was kicked out of Devin's apartment, she moved in with Jason and started dating him. For detectives, that gives Devin yet another possible reason to resent Jason, especially if her sister and ex-boyfriend were now taking care of her child together.

But while this gives them another possible motive to look into, Rosa isn't done surprising the detectives just yet. Because if what she says next is true, her sister might be completely innocent. And I know this is probably not easy to talk about, but what was their relationship like that you know of? I know it was on and off because she was with different people during the time. Okay. Do you know why they were on and off again for that long? Because she cheated.

That was the main source of their arguments in their relationship was because she was cheating on him. In the past she, this was before I looked with her, she kind of threvered Jason. She's not, I don't remember what a threat was about. If you don't do this, aging knows where you live and, He has his guns. And he even told me, he was like, I was worried about that for a while, but now I don't, I'm not worried about it. And they said he was shot, of course, immediately thought of AJ. So you know, AJ has, or you're on an impression that AJ has access to guns because of the comments that she made.

Yeah. Do you know if Devon has access to guns? AJ gave her gun ones. Okay. According to Rosa, the person responsible for Jason's murder could be a man known as AJ, Devon's new boyfriend. Rosa claims AJ's name had been used to threaten Jason numerous times before, and the situation becomes even more unsettling when she reveals that AJ allegedly had direct access to weapons, raising the possibility that he may work in law enforcement. And although this is the first time detectives hear his name, Rosa's statement

immediately makes AJ someone they need to look into. However, there's one problem. All they have is a nickname, and with so little information to go on, figuring out his real identity proved to be extremely difficult. So with this in mind, investigators know their new priority is speaking to Devon, but they have to proceed with caution. If Devon is involved in Jason's murder or knows anything about it, she could simply refuse to speak with law enforcement.

And even if she has nothing to do with it, the ongoing legal battle over her son could still make her hesitant to cooperate. So investigators come up with a plan to make sure she has no choice but to come to them herself. Four hours after Jason's murder, an officer arrives at the Montessori daycare where Jason and Devin's son is staying. The detective's plan is simple yet genius. They plan to retrieve the child and bring him to the police department. Then, when Devin later looks for him, she would have no choice but to come to the station to pick him up, giving investigators the opportunity to question her about what had happened. However, as the officer gets to work, Devin suddenly calls the daycare asking about her son.

If she realizes police are already there, she could show up within minutes and complicate the investigation. So the officer needs to find a way to keep everything looking completely normal and avoid tipping her off to what detectives are planning. All right. I can't. Hurry up, make a decision. If they're going to question either of them, investigators need something solid they can confront them with. Luckily, it won't take long for them to find exactly that. As investigators carefully review the available CCTV footage from the neighborhood, they stumble upon something interesting. They uncover a recording from just 30 minutes before Jason was killed that could finally help confirm their suspicions. But to make sense of what they're seeing, investigators need to hear Devin's version of events. and compare it against the footage. And thanks to the plan they had already set in motion,

And now, with Devin finally in front of them, detectives have their first real chance to hear her version of events, compare it against the evidence they've already uncovered,

and figure out what role, if any, she played in Jason's murder. I need him to be here now. I saw my father's car outside, and I'm not really sure why he's here. Your father's car? Yeah. Who's your dad? The name is Raul. Raoul? Yeah. Okay. Is he not allowed to see your kiddo?

He's a registered offender, so he better not be around my kid. Okay. I'm not sure who's where, but he's safe right now. Well, we, who is he with? He's gonna be with an officer right now, so. Okay, because the previous officer that I spoke to on the phone said that he was with my sister. And she doesn't have custody of him either, because she's not his guardian. Okay.

Before revealing anything they uncovered, he first wants to see how Devin reacts to learning Jason is dead, and her response is unusual. Rather than showing an immediate emotional reaction, Devin lets out a long sigh before answering, a response that immediately stands out. But whatever investigators make of that reaction, they already have something far more concrete,

because Desmond is about to confront Devin with the CCTV evidence that pulled her directly into investigators' radar. Let's go back a little bit so I can see who you are and see whether or not I can release a child to you. Does anyone have it out for your... What do you refer to him? Do you just refer to him as... So that's really kind of concerned.

And we caught the shooting on one of the Ness doorbell cameras from across the street. So I'm really kind of concerned. I know that you got served just the other day with the child custody. and you're a little upset about that he told AJ you told Devon in the past that AJ knows where you live and that he'll shoot you if he needs to I've told who Jason heard death from you and then Jason told Rose that and Rose told us that I you said that I've never said that I am what's your car at the crime scene area why are you in that area in your car and why are you turning out for scanning I didn't

People don't go around just shooting postal people. Because I think there's a lot more than you're telling us. The video of the shooter looks kind of like you. It's from a distance, but it looks like your height and your build.

It doesn't look like AJ's height and build. It doesn't look like Castaneda's height and build. It looks like your build with a black hoodie. With Detective Desmond piling this many suspicions onto Devon, most suspects would eventually break. But Devon has been listening closely, analyzing every detail. detail Desmond gives her, and while the detective believes he's closing in, she's already spotted a weakness in his own theory and is about to use his own words against him. With Devin invoking her right to a lawyer, Detective Desmond is forced to back off, and that creates a serious problem. Desmond has already revealed most of the evidence investigators have against Devin, but he never got her full account of where she was or what she was doing around the time Jason was killed. That account could become incredibly important because every detail Devin gives investigators can later be compared against the surveillance footage, scanner data, and phone records they're still collecting. So police change their approach. They bring in the U.S. Postal Inspector, who's already assisting with the case to speak with Devin, giving investigators another opportunity to get her version of events. If they can't get Devin talking

now, detectives may lose their best chance to get a fixed version of events they can later compare against the evidence. All right, all right. We're going to get the... This going here. Me, Devin. What I introduce you to something up there? I just arrived. I'm a U.S. postal inspector. So my name's Ken.

So I know you worked for the post office and I worked for the post office. So because this is kind of postal related and you were working today, I wanted to chit chat with you about kind of what happened and some of your activities today, okay? I understand you may have been kind of done

talking with the detective, but I wouldn't mind talking to you as an inspector to find out what's going on. And what happens today? So tell me, tell me about your day. So you started scanning packages, you started your route, and then what happened?

My guy, AJ, he lives on that route. Like I'm usually, I'm there around noon, so I think I was a little bit ahead of schedule. So I was able to stop and I was happy that I would be able to take a little bit more time to take a lunch and, spent some time with them. What'd you guys do just at lunch?

No, we just ate and talked and working. Okay, what happened after that? Um, we argued for a while and then he got angry and left and I stayed in my truck and I just, I was very upset. Don't you wish you could just hit skip on the worst parts of your life? You know the same way you can skip an ad?

Because Devin has already heard almost everything detectives have against her, they have to consider the possibility that she could shape her account around what she already knows. Even so, investigators have developed enough evidence to seize Devin's clothing for gunshot residue testing, confiscate her phone and black Nissan, and ultimately arrest her on suspicion of involvement in Jason's murder. but the investigation is still far from over.

Devon has repeatedly pointed detectives towards her new boyfriend, AJ, claiming she was at his house shortly before the murder and that after the two argued, AJ angrily drove away. And thanks to this interview, investigators finally learn who AJ really is. Andrew James Ritchie, he's 34 years old and lives roughly 30 miles away from where Jason was killed. When detectives look him up, one detail immediately makes Rosa's earlier statements far more significant. AJ works as a federal correctional officer. Later that night, investigators head to AJ's home to interview him. And although they don't know it yet, AJ is eventually going to help them uncover not only who shot Jason, but a much larger murder plot in which Jason may have only

been the first target. How are you? Are you AJ? Yeah. AJ, my name's Inspector Chris Lucas. I'm a federal We just want to talk to you a little bit about a lady by the name of Devon. Okay. Shriner. Do you know her? Yeah. How do you know her? She's a friend.

She's a friend. Yeah. She definitely made it pretty clear that she liked me more than I liked her. Okay. And I'm married, so. Okay. We still talk. Okay.

We talk today. I have a pretty good idea what this is about because. When did you talk to her? Apparently, well, she was driving to the police station. But she didn't stop by and talk to you or... We talked briefly today. It wasn't a good conversation. I told her that I wasn't happy.

I didn't want her here. Okay. So she was here? She was here. What time was she here? 11 something to probably about 12.15? You know, the timeline is important to us. So she was here around 11.

And she stayed until 1215. Yeah. Could it have been later than that? Because I ended up leaving. Well, I was mad. She was almost in tears because I told her I don't want her around my family. I don't want to do this. Sure.

I don't want anything to do with her. So around, go ahead, I'm sorry. So she was upset. And so I left and went to Hoogers and ate with some friends. Okay. And I don't, she went back to living a while. When you left. And I got there probably about 12.30.

At Hooters. Yeah. AJ seems to back Devin up. He confirms that she came to his house in her postal truck, claims they argued, and that he left around 1215 to meet friends at Hooters while Devin stayed behind upset. But there's already a problem. Just minutes earlier, A.J. had claimed he hadn't seen Devin at all that day. And by giving detectives such a specific timeline, A.J. has now handed them something they

can test against the phone records, GPS data, and surveillance footage. Six days later, detectives arrive at AJ's workplace. In that time, they've tracked his phone, compared his story against Devons, and reconstructed his movements on the morning of the murder, and now they know his account is filled with contradictions. More importantly, investigators have uncovered evidence suggesting Jason may not have been the only intended victim that day. And when AJ sits down for a second interview, detectives are finally ready to show him exactly how much of his story they've already disproven.

So, first off, I know that we're at your place of work. So I imagine that they called you down here. All right. So we know that you were in Longmont that morning, and I'm not asking that because of you. I'm just asking that to further verify whether or not you had any idea where Devon was at that time. You've already told me that you weren't with Devon at 1215 like you had previously told us, all right? So the reason I'm showing you this is because we can show that you weren't with Devon

and you can't obviously verify where she was. Right. What else did you want to show me? You got nothing to say about this? That's off your phone. Two days before this happened. Can you explain that? You're a smart guy. I think you know where we're going with this. going with this so if you want to give us answers now's the time to give them to us the picture a j is

looking at is one of the strongest pieces of evidence detectives have uncovered in the case so far it was sent from devon to a j just a few days before the murder showing her in the exact same clothes jason's killer was later recorded wearing at the scene at this point detectives have little doubt that devon was the one who killed jason but there's still one equally important question question to answer. Was Devin acting alone or was A.J. her accomplice? And as AJ begins explaining what happened, detectives are about to learn that Jason's murder was only one part of something far more disturbing. You only get a couple of opportunities to give us explanations for what's going on. We're trying to find the truth. So her and I were talking in the morning

when I dropped her off at my house, and I didn't necessarily think too much of it. After she had gotten to work or on her way to work, she had called me and told me that she had decided that that was what she thought needed to happen. And she had told me that she had thought about doing this before. Actually, three days prior to that, she told me that she was going to do this, and I talked her out of it. That's the truth. So explain this picture to me. Explain this picture right here in the middle.

What's the conversation around that? So that was the three days prior when she told me that she was going to go over there in the middle of the time. And I told her, I told her not to. Originally, her plan was she was going to take out Jason, Rosa, and herself. And I begged her not. She has talked about his route because she knows the long long run routes. So I went out there, I knew his route number, I found him, and I continued to stay on the phone with her to try to tell her, to try to talk her out with it. At that point in time, I stopped over at his truck and I told him that he should watch out for her because I think she's planning on doing something.

He just looked me to make this boy and I was like, Devin, I said she's unsubbed. And I said she's unstable right now and I think that she's been something stupid. And he said, I'm not scared of that. And I said, okay. And I left. AJ claims he was only trying to stop Devin from hurting Rosa or Jason, even going as far as hiding Jason's truck and warning him himself. But what AJ doesn't realize is that detectives aren't buying his story.

And they already believe his connection to Jason's murder runs far deeper than he's willing to admit. I'm just trying to find stuff that's going to help you at this point. Because you understand. You're telling me that, but I don't have evidence of that. Does that make sense? Right. Why don't, so you know we have your phone.

You got your phone records. We have her phone records. Why don't, if this has happened multiple times where she said that she's going to do this or she needs to do this, why don't we see any texts of you telling her not to do this if you've begged and pleaded for her not to so many times? There's no documentation of you actually trying, to calm her down from going to kill him,

even though this has happened multiple times. She never told me on Texas that she was going to leave her. You didn't tell anyone. You did think she was going to do it. You went down there to warn him. Right. You went down there, not just to warn him. You went down there and you waited if what you're telling me is true.

If I'm supposed to believe what you're telling me is true, you're saying that you went all the way. You believed it so much to the extent that you went all the way to Longmont after you had spent the night with her to go down there and sit and follow a mail truck around for two or three hours. That's how much you believed it. And you didn't tell anyone else. That's what I'm supposed to believe? This family is on the brink of civil war.

As the interrogation wraps up, AJ refuses to reveal anything more about his involvement, insisting that he had only followed Jason in an attempt to prevent the shooting. But detectives know that tracking Jason's postal route for nearly three hours, while remaining in constant contact with Devon, had to mean far more than that. So AJ is placed under arrest for his role in the murder of Jason Schaefer. And as investigators continue examining the pair's phones, the case against him becomes even more disturbing. Hidden among their messages are conversations dating back months before the shooting, in which AJ encourages Devon's violent thoughts towards Jason and Rosa.

In one message, he tells her she could simply kill them both, and even suggests making it a as though they had killed each other. Combined with their nearly three-hour call on the morning of the murder, AJ's movements along Jason's route and the false alibi they had attempted to create, detectives now have enough to show that AJ was not trying to stop the attack. He had helped Devin locate Jason and prepare for it. Both A.J. and Devin would ultimately be charged with first-degree murder after deliberation. A.J. was prosecuted under Colorado's complicity law.

meaning he faced the same murder charge as Devon despite never firing the gun himself. In March, 2003, Devin was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Six months later, AJ was convicted of the same charge and received the same sentence, ensuring that neither of them would ever be released.
