In the most professional, unprofessional podcast and your number one source for drunk facts. It's Drink Champs motherfucking podcast where every day is New Year's Eve.
Starting point is 00:02:09 It's time for Drink Champs. Drink up, motherfuckers. What it good be opening for the stupidest your boy NRE? What up, it's DJ EFN. It's Militant Crazy Raw Radio. Drink Champs Happy Hour. Make some noise! And when me and EFN started this show, we always said we wanted
Starting point is 00:02:34 to dedicate this show to the legends of legends. We wanted to dedicate this to icons, to tycoons, to people who have stood the test of time. I'm looking at this brother right now. This brother looking like he's 14 years old. He's been dominated. He's done, wrote, produced, own music.
Starting point is 00:02:54 The brother of a legendary, never leaned on the fact that he's the brother of his. He's been holding his own ground on tour right now, kicking monkey foot motherfuckers through they face. Oh yeah. West Coast is in the building. We are celebrating 50 years of hip hop and I couldn't see no better way
Starting point is 00:03:12 to celebrate the West Coast version of the hip hop with my brother motherfucking Rory motherfucking G. Long beach in the building. Now Snoop just performed
Starting point is 00:03:24 at the 50th anniversary of hip hop That was crazy Although Let me just be clear Because Although that was Like one of the official parties Of 50th anniversary of hip hop
Starting point is 00:03:36 In Yankee Stadium This wasn't the only party There's a whole bunch of Because I listened to Charlamagne Tha God This morning And I want to ask you This question
Starting point is 00:03:44 And he was saying that You know some people in the South felt slighted. Yeah. Some people in the West felt slighted. Some people in the Midwest felt slighted. Yeah. But sometimes, like, when I see an icon like Snoop, to me, Snoop represents the whole West Coast. Yes, he does. Even though he probably doesn't, like, to everyone else.
Starting point is 00:04:01 You know, I'm sure a Mac-10, I'm sure a WC, I saw Ice Cube would have wanted to participate as well. But I think that's what the people, the gatekeepers make a mistake. Like, they'll have Flo Rida, and they think that Flo Rida will represent the whole Florida. Right. Or the whole South. Not repping the diversity of LA. I think they tried. I think with Hip Hop 50, the Yankee Stadium, people tried to do was try to include everybody that they had connections to.
Starting point is 00:04:25 You understand what I'm saying? But, I'm sorry, that's a long-ass question. But how do you feel about the hip-hop 50? Well, Charlamagne had a really good
Starting point is 00:04:32 solution for it, but it was dope the way it was done, you know, there at the Yankee Stadium. His solution, it was a good solution. He said,
Starting point is 00:04:40 you know, let's keep it moving and then the South do a special 50-year reunion for the South. I like And then The South do A special 50 year Reunion for the South I like that The West Coast Do a 50 year
Starting point is 00:04:48 Thing for The West Coast Birthday for the West Coast Just like you know Just everybody doing it So it's one You know so everybody Can feel good about it
Starting point is 00:04:57 And say okay we did that But even though All you motherfuckers Is respected Well respected And you are counted Right With this 50 years of hip hop Right Right. Because I ain't gonna lie
Starting point is 00:05:06 to you. I know they didn't go. I couldn't go, right? I was obligated to a couple of other things. But I was looking at the footage and I the camar... What's that word? Camaraderie. Camaraderie. You know what? That was the first time, I'm gonna be honest with you, and this is real talk.
Starting point is 00:05:23 We are taught sometimes to look at a person and say, oh, that's homie from the West Coast. Yeah. That was the first time I was like, look at how hip-hop is. It's all hip-hop. I didn't say West Coast.
Starting point is 00:05:32 I didn't say East Coast. I didn't say black. I didn't say Puerto Rican. I was just like, I just looked at hip-hop and I was like on Kane Instagram. I'm on Snoop. I'm on everyone's Instagram
Starting point is 00:05:43 and I'm looking and I'm like, I was a kid. And at that moment, I didn't feel black. I didn't feel, I'm on Snoop. I'm on everyone's Instagram. And I'm looking and I'm like, I was a kid. And at that moment, I didn't feel black. I didn't feel, I felt hip hop. I felt, I didn't feel like a race. I felt like, and it was just so dope. It was even dope to hear Russell Simmons. Russell Simmons called me at four o'clock in the morning.
Starting point is 00:05:59 And he's like, they forgetting DJ Hollywood. And I'm like, you're the only person. Oh yeah, that's big. You heard about DJ Hollywood? Yeah. Yeah, that was big. To bring him out there. I mean, I actually met Hollywood.
Starting point is 00:06:11 One of my friends named Jamea, she took me to the Rucker. Wow. And they laid it out for me. I was like. And what year was this? Oh, wait. What year was that? It had to be.
Starting point is 00:06:24 It's probably about maybe three or four years ago. Oh, okay, this is new. I thought you should be in Hollywood from back then. Okay. No, did DJ Hollywood? Yeah, DJ Hollywood. No, no, no, too bad. When he was the, okay, he was emceeing too?
Starting point is 00:06:37 Okay, okay, okay, okay. That's why when you say Hollywood, I was like, damn. But they was telling me how much of an OG he was then. Oh, yeah, yeah. Quadruple OG. He was actually crazy about it. And please, hip-hop historians, I got as close as I could. He was the person that kind of invented the word MC. What I mean by that is, at this point, people were DJing.
Starting point is 00:07:01 But the DJs, you know, they was getting people hyped through the music. He was the first person to actually grab the mic and say, one of his routines was one of my favorite records. I always try to do this record over. I was never successful with doing it. Ooh-tang, ooh-tang, I don't want to go sex-sitting with my honey bun.
Starting point is 00:07:17 Give me some of that yum-yum-yum before I go to bed. Y'all don't think it's on the record. Y'all don't think it's on the record. But, let's skip around real quick. One of my favorite movies, straight out of comedy.
Starting point is 00:07:33 It has that famous scene with you and Dre, right? Where he gets kicked out. What is it? Well, I mean, you know he got put out I think it was like
Starting point is 00:07:48 he was around 18 when he got kicked out of the crib 18 or 19 yeah around that time I was just a little snotty nose kid
Starting point is 00:07:56 you know just around just you know looking up to him both him and my brother Tyreek right yeah back then yeah
Starting point is 00:08:02 because I'm going to tell you man out of all what is it called biop biop biopic biopic films and my brother Tyreek. Right. Yeah, back then, yeah. Because I'm going to tell you, man, out of all the, what is it called, biop? Biop? Biopics. Biopic films.
Starting point is 00:08:12 To me, this was the best one. Yeah. Now, can you answer this for me? Is it the best one because these brothers are still around so they can actually critique? Well, not everybody's. Well, not everybody. Obviously, Easy is gone.
Starting point is 00:08:22 Nate is not gone. Who else? Nate Dogg is not gone. Oh, Nate Dogg, obviously. Yeah, okay, my bad. Rest in peace, Nate everybody's. Well, not everybody. Obviously, Easy is gone. Nate is not gone. Who else? Nate Dogg. Oh, Nate Dogg, obviously. Yeah, okay, my bad. Rest in peace, Nate Dogg. Man, I mean, there was some things in there, in it, that I felt that should have been in there that wasn't in it. But, you know, if they'd have took the time to put everything in there, that movie probably would have.
Starting point is 00:08:45 What parts, what parts you think were missing? A week long, not an hour long. What parts you think were vital that were missing? I mean,
Starting point is 00:08:54 not anything to do with me, but, and it wasn't, it wasn't like, you know, I ain't like one of them people trying to smash on it. Because you know the story
Starting point is 00:09:02 better than anybody else from your perspective. Like the fun we used to have when we was in Audio Achievements. Like I said, I was a young buck around all those guys. Just being in there having fun and what we talked about earlier with the live skits
Starting point is 00:09:15 and stuff like that. Just showing that whole that part right there. And different things that went on, you know, like when they was on the road. We was in San Diego one time, and I got a chance to come out and see one of their shows. You know, like the stuff they was doing behind the scenes.
Starting point is 00:09:34 Like, it's just little stuff like that. You know, but overall, it was still, it was on point. How old were you when NWA took off? I had to be. Like, did you guys have 213 already? took off? I had to be Did you guys have 213 already? 213 had to come out Yeah, we came I'm just saying the beginnings of you guys
Starting point is 00:09:53 We was pups We was pups We was just hearing it And falling in love with it Like I said, I used to get a chance to go up to the studio Did you see NWA? Yeah, I used to get a chance to go up to the studio. you know, I get to, yeah, I used to hang around
Starting point is 00:10:07 at Audio Achievements. And that's what, even, shit, I hung out so much that they took me and put me on a skit on Niggas for Life.
Starting point is 00:10:16 Oh, shit. Remember the jail part where, hey, Mr. Officer, get your motherfucking hands. That was me. What the fuck?
Starting point is 00:10:22 Yo! Get the fuck out of here. Get the fuck. Holy shit Get the fuck out of here. Get the fuck. Holy shit. Let's make some noise for that. I was today's guest. I learned that. Holy shit.
Starting point is 00:10:33 Yeah, I was a pup. Just hanging around. And like he said, 213 came after that, man. But we was hearing the world-class wrecking crew and the L.A. Dream team and Ice-T. And you knew that was your brother when you heard the world-class Wrecking Crew and the L.A. Dream Team and Ice-T. And you knew that was your brother when you heard the world-class Wrecking Crew?
Starting point is 00:10:50 Oh, yeah. I'm just saying. You know how it was back in the day. People didn't do videos. You know what I mean? Yeah. Yeah. I mean, we looked up to all of that.
Starting point is 00:10:59 You know, me and Snoop and all of us, even way back then, and one of the cold things that happened around that time, you know, Dre used to have tapes when they would do music. I used to hear the shit before everybody else. So we used to sell candy, which is the Voltron crew, which was in, that I talk about in this DJ, the Voltron crew, that was our crew.
Starting point is 00:11:22 And so what we would do was we would work, we would go sell candy for this dude named Steve. You know, just a bunch of young black kids working for this cat take us out to all the rich areas to sell candy. So after that, we would go to McDonald's. That's when the Big Mac value pack came out.
Starting point is 00:11:41 That was a big deal when you was a kid. Yeah, that shit was cracking. That was like being closed, having a Big Mac in that shit That shit was cracking That was like We in clothes Having a big back to hand It was like a block Yeah so we would be Freestyling and having You know battles
Starting point is 00:11:51 And stuff in there You know even the twins They up in here They was All of us was Even my own baby papa When I say baby papa Tick that's baby papa
Starting point is 00:11:58 Right there We all came from Elementary King Park All that So we In LBC Yeah in Long Beach, California.
Starting point is 00:12:06 And so we used to freestyle and have fun and rap against each other in there, beatboxing the whole nine. So I had memorized Dre's song. It was a song called The Cabbage Patch. So these niggas in there busting like a motherfucker. So it came to my turn. I was like, well, I was rolling down the street
Starting point is 00:12:23 with my mind at ease. I had my top pulled back so I could feel the breeze. Somebody called my name. I looked around. It was a freak on the bus stop flagging me down. So I'm rapping shit. That was great. It was great shit.
Starting point is 00:12:42 They was like, one, you are the motherfucker. They heard the song and they was like, oh, kid. They was like, Warren, you are the motherfucker. Then I had, they heard the song and they was like, oh, nigga. You wrong with that, but shit, I was still,
Starting point is 00:12:53 I was all right. I wasn't, Snoop was all, it was dope. With Steve, Snoop, the twins, they was dope. They used to freestyle
Starting point is 00:12:59 their ass off. Now, it was a famous story about like how Fat Joe, Fat Joe had a time where he could have signed himself or he signed Punt. And then everyone said how honorable Fat Joe was for doing that. But then everyone says that he wasn't the first one. Everyone says it was you with Snoop that you had a chance to kind of like sign, but you said you wanted to put Snoop first. Well, I was always pushing for Snoop. I mean, I was pushing for all of us
Starting point is 00:13:26 at the same time, but I was more of like, I was like the, who could I think of that used to be, I was like very aggressive with working with Snoop. I wanted him,
Starting point is 00:13:42 because I'm dope, but he was, he's dope. I'm a storyteller. I make it simple, but to where people can relate to it real easy. Snoop was bussing all. He was an MC. He was this, that. He was all of the above.
Starting point is 00:13:58 That was just my thing. I just wanted to push hard for him to be successful because I know if he blows up and be successful, he going to snatch us up too at the same time. Even though we had a demo tape all together. Right, the group. Voltron crew. No, that was 213.
Starting point is 00:14:15 Oh, 213, okay. Yeah, yeah. And that's just how I was, man. Just wanting to push, just wanting to win. No, but that's honorable. Like, most people don't do that. Like, Most people actually they're selfish.
Starting point is 00:14:28 And they'll say, man, put yourself... But how... You know, one of the things that I did that I felt great about my life was Fat Joe asked me to get in contact with Jay-Z for him. I'm like, no one gets in contact with Jay-Z. But I used my one favor with
Starting point is 00:14:43 Jay-Z and I gave it to Fat Joe. And then my life kind of changed from that because I guess God was testing me. It kind of made me feel unselfish. So did you feel like that when you put Snoop in front of you? Or this was your plan from the beginning? You know, that was my plan.
Starting point is 00:14:59 I didn't even think it all the way through. It's just what came natural. Unselfish and a plan for him to blow. Right. Because that was my best friend. Right. Just pushing for my best friend and wanted to see him be successful because his name was bigger than me and Nate. Was it Snoop Rock?
Starting point is 00:15:15 Snoop Rockski. Snoop Rockski. Snoop Rockski. He's so glad he changed that. They started calling me, what's that little yellow motherfucker on the character? Pac-Man? No, with the Snoopy and the little Woodstock. They started calling me Woodstock.
Starting point is 00:15:38 I was mad to the motherfucker. I said, hell no. Shit, I ain't no goddamn Woodstock. Okay, so let's just bounce around a little bit, right? I had an incident like that where... Go ahead. Let's go. I'm going to just say this.
Starting point is 00:15:52 Let's go. Let's go. When I did Endo Smoke on the Poetry of Justice soundtrack... With Isley Brothers. No, that's not Isley Brothers. You saying the sample? The song. Endo Smoke. Okay, yeah. But the sample was Rap Dirty by Blowfly. Okay, that's not it. You saying the sample? The song. No, Endo Smoke.
Starting point is 00:16:05 Okay, yeah. But the sample was Rap Dirty by Blowfly. Okay, cool. Blowfly. Def Jam had called and was inquiring about the guys on the song. Uh-huh. So they called, Paul Stewart and John Singleton called me. It was like, Warren,
Starting point is 00:16:21 Def Jam is, you know, they want to talk to you. So I was like, all right, cool. So we talking and shit. You say John Singleton called you? And then Paul Stewart, yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:31 He's trying to get away with that floor. That floor. So they called and they was, you know, inquiring about the guys on the record.
Starting point is 00:16:44 So I was like, you know, okay, cool. I said, I produced it. You know, that on the record so I was like, you know, okay, cool. I said, I produced it. That was a record. He was like, well, it was Chris Lighty, Tracy Waples, and Lior Cohen. They was all on the phone talking to me. Crazy. It was like,
Starting point is 00:16:59 well, we want the guy on the song that he had all of the style. So I was like, oh, okay, Mr. Graham, that's my guy. I'm going to reach out to him, and I'm going to put you in contact with his people so you guys can, you know, get it all together. So they said he had kind of like a singing type of feel to what he was doing. I said, okay, so you mean the second guy? So they were like, yeah, that guy.
Starting point is 00:17:22 I said, shit, that's me. That's me. I said shit that's me That's me Shit So it was like Yeah I said shit that's me They said we want you So I was like damn I was tripping out I produced it so I was like
Starting point is 00:17:39 Shit I'm going to produce all his shit Yeah because he was my guy That was my guy like my artist. You know, that was my guy. Like, my artist type, you know. And that was an example of, you know, I tried to push him before myself. You wasn't even thinking about yourself. I wasn't thinking about myself. I knew I would get my shot by producing. Mr. Graham.
Starting point is 00:17:59 Okay, okay. Let me ask you, because now when I listen listen To the radio I turn on the radio I hear versions Of Nick Dogg All day Yeah With all due respect To these new artists
Starting point is 00:18:11 I believe the first Person I've really heard Go into depth Singing on the record Was T.J. Swan Yeah From the Juice Crew He got in on the other day
Starting point is 00:18:21 I seen him up there On the stage He got on stage He got in on stage Oh I didn't see I missed that part He did a tribute to Biz seen him up there on the stage He got on stage He got down on stage Oh I didn't see I missed that part He did a tribute to Biz He was up there
Starting point is 00:18:27 And after that The only person But who was hitting melodies Cause TJ Swann was kinda like I wanna see rhythm Yeah no The people that were singing before Didn't have
Starting point is 00:18:37 But Nate Nate was actually You can hear He went to church with his mom Yes indeed You can hear that And then He was his mom Yes indeed You can hear that And then He was above
Starting point is 00:18:47 He was What does that shit called Ahead of your time Right He was so ahead of his time That people now Are hitting his melodies Right now
Starting point is 00:18:54 And they don't even know it Yeah Did you You know what That Another flight Yeah Yeah
Starting point is 00:19:02 Hold up That's Whoever wrote that That's real Even the hold up Oh shit Corley Ray Big hard
Starting point is 00:19:20 Yes indeed Did you think Because I mean not to call out anybody's name, but when I, like, God bless, when I hear T-Pain, when I hear Future, I hear Rod Wave, I hear, like, who's these other guys out there? Even, like, the Travis Scott's melodies and all that. Did you think, like, Nate's legacy would be this powerful? Definitely. You knew it. I knew it. He he was just he was different you know it was different and anything like that was like how snoop and drake
Starting point is 00:19:53 is that's how me and nate is you know what i mean so anything i would bring up it no it don't matter what it was i could put on some shit like a jazz tune that's like off balance and just crazy. He would come up with some shit to that shit. He would do some scatting to that shit. You know, he would do all kinds of shit, but it would be in a gangster way. Right. You know, whether it's about a woman,
Starting point is 00:20:17 he would be scatting to talking about a woman. You know what I mean? And just, he was just dope. Anything that you could put in his face he would turn that shit in or something to him because there was nothing soft about the way he approached the record yeah yeah he meant that shit when he was on there he telling this telling the real just like the hardest man it's one of his songs i don't know if too many people heard that but it's him.
Starting point is 00:20:50 He's talking in third person, but the person that's the third person is a gun. It's a gun telling him a story, and he's telling the story about himself at the same time. You know, because it say, little big man, don't you see me lying here? Pick me up. Well, he said, I'll make your life easier uh god damn it i can't remember the song off the words all right but he say after you finish doing what you doing toss me and be gone but just the gun talking toss me and be gone all right it's it's called you got to hear it's called the hardest man but like I said, he was incredible, man. And it was things like that that he could do along with being on any type of genre of music and making that shit a hit record.
Starting point is 00:21:33 Nate was incredible. Let's make some noise for Nate. Yes, indeed. So, you know, one of the beautiful parts about me being an artist is me to sit there and watch a producer create. Yeah. What is something that you need to create? When you're in the studio, what do you need? Shit.
Starting point is 00:21:53 What's the vibe? The environment. What does it got to be like? I have me some beer, bud, some tequila. Give us some tequila, goddammit. Just musicians. some tequila. Give us some tequila, God damn it. Just, you know, musicians. Right. And, you know,
Starting point is 00:22:08 just my friends. Actually, what I do is I call my friends later to come up. You know, so I sit in there pretty much by myself for a while.
Starting point is 00:22:15 Then I bring in the musicians to help out with parts that I know I can't get. Uh-huh. And I just sit in there, motherfucker, all just putting everything together.
Starting point is 00:22:24 And then I'll call everybody to come up. And then when they come in, I'll start playing shit. And it lets me know if I got something banging. But that's pretty much it. I'll smoke me a joint. I got the musicians there. I'll have me some beers and tequila and food. And it just take me into it.
Starting point is 00:22:43 And my records and my turntable and my mix is just sitting there vibing out We're getting ideas. Mm-hmm. I love that shit, too. I love it I don't the hell you know, I I thought I didn't miss the studio to the other day. Yeah, and, yeah. I was like, oh, I miss this motherfucker. You still young. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I can't find it. It ain't over. They will never stop. But let's talk about this tour, though. Let's talk about this tour. The tour is off the chain.
Starting point is 00:23:12 Everywhere we've been, been sold out. Who's on this tour? It's official. It's me, Snoop, Too Short, Wiz, Burner, DJ Drama.
Starting point is 00:23:20 The Twins is out here with us. Oh, the smoke alarm's going off everywhere. Oh, my God. Yeah, you might smoke here with us. Oh, the smoke alarm's going off everywhere. Oh my God. We getting tired of you. I know I am. I'm like, God damn, another goddamn house, another goddamn
Starting point is 00:23:35 can't take it. I give the shit away. Like, take this shit. Tired of it. Let me ask you, because, you know, I was fortunate enough to be around when death row was around yeah and i'm fortunate enough to see the transition yes from how everyone moved when they was on death row to kind of like grown men now like everyone is kind of like i don't want to say adults yeah right because everybody was young that's what people don't want to say adults. Yeah, right? Because everybody was young back then.
Starting point is 00:24:05 That's what people don't realize. I'm trying to think of a cooler word. I mean, shit, yeah, mature. Mature, yeah. Yes, indeed. Right, right. So what is the difference? Where's Warren G more comfortable?
Starting point is 00:24:18 When your guys was on the road? Because remember, when you guys was affiliated, I know you was always on Def Jam. Yeah, I was. But when you guys was affiliated, this was the highest of on Def Jam. Yeah, I was. But when you guys was affiliated, this was the highest of the highest.
Starting point is 00:24:27 This was the highest of the West Coast. This was the highest in the world, right? Did you have more fun then or are you having more fun now? Or is it different?
Starting point is 00:24:38 I had more fun then. I mean, I have a ball now, but I had a ball back then because it was fun and dangerous And dangerous So it was exciting I swear to God I swear to my father
Starting point is 00:24:52 He's going to say that I'm going to say He's going to say It was fun and dangerous That's just some shit From the hood We like that You know the anticipation
Starting point is 00:24:59 Of knowing like Damn we may bump heads Over here Okay shit It's on You know let's go Which you did bump heads Over there. Hey, okay, shit, it's on. You know, let's go. Which you did bump heads
Starting point is 00:25:07 over there. All the time. I had seen, I don't know if it was an interview you did. Nah, something about you with Suge,
Starting point is 00:25:13 right, that you had to get out of the studio. Because he was the only one. No, I went to the, it was a session.
Starting point is 00:25:22 I went to go see Snoop and everybody. You know, I hadn't seen everybody in a minute, so I went up there and it was a studio. I went to go see Snoop and everybody. You know, I hadn't seen everybody in a minute, so I went up there. And it was a studio session. Everybody in that motherfucking party and everybody doing Tupac.
Starting point is 00:25:32 And everybody, all of us, no, Tupac wasn't in there. It was just, it was the Dog Pound, Snoop, everybody, all our hoes. But this is the Pac era of death row. Yeah. And you knew Dog Pound back then? Because that was Snoop.
Starting point is 00:25:43 I've known him all my life. Okay, okay. Shit. I'll get into that. Let's get cuz that was I've known my life. Okay. Okay They came through the phone the dog pound came through the phone look me the phone that's right. Yes indeed. So uh We was in the studio Well, I mean we bumped heads a couple times. You know, I ain't like in the bashing the motherfucker. And I won't bash him or nothing like that because I've known them niggas since shit. When I was about 15 years old, the first time I met him, I went to a Wet n' Wild party. Talking about Suge.
Starting point is 00:26:18 Yeah, with Suge, with Dre now. Way back at Easy and Dre. But he was a bodyguard, right? They called him Marianne back then? No, they called him Suge back then. They called him Suge back then? Yes, yes, yes. But he was a bodyguard, right? They called him Marianne back then? No, they called him Suge back then. But he was a bodyguard at first, right? Yeah. And then he started managing.
Starting point is 00:26:30 He was around Bobby Brown and Easy, hanging around, eating them and all. You know, just a cool nigga. Right. But, you know, now, it was a situation that happened where, you know, I came in the studio. You know, everybody's in there. You know, I was cracking on Def Jam. Everything was popping. So, you know, I'm thinking all this shit is all good.
Starting point is 00:26:56 So one of my guys come in that I knew that was part of his team was like, Warren should want to holler at you. So I was like, all right, cool, I'm coming in there. I'm just right here talking to all of my guys. So we talk and he come in again like, Warren, I sure want you. I'm like, okay, I'm coming. Let me talk to my guy.
Starting point is 00:27:18 And then so he came in there and was like, Warren, man, let me holler at you, man. And I was like, shit, let me see what the fuck this nigga's god damn so uh so i uh i went in there uh walked in went in the room and once you know when we got in there the door shut you know another door came up from this side yeah another door came over from this side and then it was a dude I knew came out Was just like, Blood, you tried to set me up So I'm like, huh? What the fuck I look like trying to set you up?
Starting point is 00:27:50 This is my nigga, too Like, this is my guy We used to drink, smoke together All kind of shit from the beginning Like, yeah, some bitches told me that When he said some bitches I said, oh, this nigga This some bullshit
Starting point is 00:28:01 Yeah Because I don't even get down like that Right, right So, you know, so he woofing I said, oh, this is bullshit. Because I don't even get down like that. So, you know, so he's woofing. So they, you know, going at it. He talking to sugar, like, blood, you, this is us. I'm like, no.
Starting point is 00:28:16 So I'm just chilling. So he, like, walk up on me like he tripping and just wham, just snatched my shit. Mind you, I had a 40 Glock on my hip. I could have pulled that motherfucker out and started busting. But I said, you know what? I'm like, shit, I can't. This is going to be the end of my shit.
Starting point is 00:28:34 I'm going to be done. All this shit is going to be done because they're going to be shot. I'm going to be shot coming out because you've got a gang of motherfuckers on the outside like banged out motherfuckers you got police the whole nine so i it was a situation so one of my homeboys uh big c style he came in like what's up like what's going on why what's happening with one why y'all fucking with one you know so they like they told us so
Starting point is 00:29:01 why they talking i hit that door now i eased out that motherfucker and I walked through the kitchen and I seen one of my homeboys and two of my guys I looked at them like nigga these niggas tripping I didn't want to alarm nobody so I got to the hallway and I ran up not ran but I walked out the hallway so as I'm going down the hallway
Starting point is 00:29:20 he came storming out that motherfucker get that nigga blood as soon as he said that I took over going down the hallway, he came storming out that motherfucker, get that nigga blood! As soon as he said that shit, I took off. I was playing. Who said get that nigga blood? You!
Starting point is 00:29:31 Okay, okay. They niggas start running, all you seen was just like a, like some dominoes, just boo-boo-boo-boo-boo, just bop, they fell. All right. So I got a chance to get out that motherfucker.
Starting point is 00:29:42 I jumped in my truck, I had a big ass, I think it was a Denali truck or something, big black motherfucker on big old knobbies. So I got in my goddamn truck. I backed that motherfucker. I was like, nigga, fuck y'all. Whoop, took off. And the whole thing about that is that I didn't know Dre had left that bro.
Starting point is 00:30:03 You know what I mean? The news wasn't out. Yeah, so I didn't know Dre had left that bro. You know what I mean? The news wasn't out. I didn't know, but that shit happened to me in there. Then I called my uncle. I said, Ron, this motherfucker just snatched my chain. I was mad as a motherfucker. He was like,
Starting point is 00:30:19 give me somebody's number one. He called Snoop. Who was that you called, Ron? Hello, motherfucker. And he told him, he told him straight up, he said, look, if my nephew Chain don't come out that motherfucker,
Starting point is 00:30:40 I'm going to blow that motherfucker up. The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration in the United States. Recipients have done the improbable, showing immense bravery and sacrifice in the name of something much bigger than themselves. This medal is for the men who went down that day. It's for the families of those who didn't make it. I'm J.R. Martinez. I'm a U.S. Army veteran myself.

Starting point is 00:31:46 get your podcasts. A lot of times the big economic forces we hear about on the news show up in our lives in small ways. Three or four days a week, I would buy two cups of banana pudding, but the price has gone up. So now I only buy one. The demand curve in action. And that's just one of the things we'll be covering on Everybody's Business from Bloomberg Businessweek. I'm Max Chavkin. And I'm Stacey Vanek-Smith. Every Friday, we will be diving into the biggest stories in business, taking a look at what's going on, why it matters, and how it shows up in our everyday lives. But guests like Businessweek editor Brad Stone, sports reporter Randall Williams,
Starting point is 00:32:27 and consumer spending expert Amanda Mull will take you inside the boardrooms, the backrooms, even the signal chats that make our economy tick. Hey, I want to learn about VeChain. I want to buy some blockchain or whatever it is that they're doing. So listen to Everybody's Business on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. My name is Brendan Patrick Hughes, host of Divine Intervention.
Starting point is 00:32:51 This is a story about radical nuns in combat boots and wild-haired priests trading blows with J. Edgar Hoover in a hell-bent effort to sabotage a war. J. Edgar Hoover was furious. Somebody violated the FBI, and he wanted to bring the Catholic left to its knees. The FBI went around to all their neighbors and said to them, do you think these people are good Americans? It's got heists, tragedy, a trial of the century, and the goddamnedest love story you've ever heard. I picked up the phone phone and my thought was,
Starting point is 00:33:26 this is the most important phone call I'll ever make in my life. I couldn't believe it. I mean, Brendan, it was divine intervention. You can now binge all 10 episodes of Divine Intervention on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. He's a special type of guy. It's different. I'm talking Navy SEAL type.
Starting point is 00:33:58 Well, let me quit because I don't want to get you in trouble. Snoop called me like, G-Dub, come get your chain, man. I said, hell no, nigga. I ain't going back up there to get that chain. Nigga, keep that motherfucking hold it. And when I see you, I'll get it. But the whole time, I didn't know Dre left.
Starting point is 00:34:14 I wish he would have called me like, niggas, don't go around that shit. Them niggas is tripping. But some of his homeboys had always used to tell me like, Warren, they on something else. Just kind of stay out the way. So let me ask you, because to me, you was an insider that was like an outsider
Starting point is 00:34:33 because you wasn't signed to Death Row technically. Right. At one point, again, I'm an outsider. I'm looking, but this, Death Row looked like
Starting point is 00:34:43 the funnest fucking place in America. I was off the chain. Like, it went from it being like, like, like, like, I'm an outsider I'm looking But this Death Row looked like The funnest fucking place In America I was off the chain Like it went from It being like Like Like Queensbury I'm from Leprechaun City
Starting point is 00:34:51 But Queensbury is not too far away Right Queensbury is a wild ass neighborhood Let me just tell you something It's the funnest Time of my whole fucking life It's a dangerous ass But it's fun as fuck
Starting point is 00:35:01 So me looking from the outside In I would look at Death Row And be like This is like a fun-ass fucking label. Yeah. These guys got perms. These guys is good.
Starting point is 00:35:09 Cadillacs. We had a ball. But then, at what point did it go from, it stopped being fun? Was it the gang thing? I think once the money started rolling in, you know, that's when everything kind of like started to change a little bit. But wait, they didn't want to sign you at Death Row? Shit, I don't, I didn't get signed to them.
Starting point is 00:35:31 So, you know, I don't know what. Could there have been a thing that because you were at Def Jam that they were like, well, you should have been over here? Like, could that have ever been a thing? Well, that was after, after, shit, after I got, you know, the motherfuckers wasn't fucking with me, I was like, shit, let me get out and do my motherfucking thing. Because it just wasn't right.
Starting point is 00:35:50 But like I said, we had a ball. Don't get me wrong. I had fun with Suge. We had a lot of fun. We just bumped heads a few times. That wasn't cool. Another incident was where when we was young in the game at the Solar Studio, you know, and they pulled out
Starting point is 00:36:08 the contracts. And I was just like, myself, I'm like, shit, you can't just sign this shit. In the studio? In the studio. So you can't sign it. So y'all just vibing
Starting point is 00:36:19 and Shug just comes and brings out a contract? Well, we had been doing, you know, doing our thing, so it was time for... Is he working on a chronic or no? Huh? Are we working on a chronic?
Starting point is 00:36:28 Was we doing a chronic? I think we was doing a chronic then. So I told Snoop, I was like, shit, don't sign that shit. You know, don't sign that contract. Get a lawyer. Oh, man. You know, and one of my constituents went in there and told him that I told him
Starting point is 00:36:47 not to sign it. When he heard that shit, here you go again. That's the story I heard. Hey, Blair, where's Warren at? That's the story I heard. Okay, I hear that. And then he came and he grabbed me and slammed me up against the wall
Starting point is 00:37:02 and he was just like, Blood, you told them not to sign that contract. And I was like, man, you better get your hands off me. He'll tell you. I said, get your hands off me. I'm going to call all my homeboys. Because back then, I didn't care. Shit.
Starting point is 00:37:16 And I had one of my little buddies with me named Cisco. Cisco was a gunner. But he didn't have no gun on him. But I wouldn't have wanted him to shoot him or nothing like that or do anything like that because I wasn't, you know, I'm not going to let him shoot him. But he was that hot-headed. But he couldn't do shit. This motherfucker was this big. Right.
Starting point is 00:37:35 And so I thought I was getting away. I went and hit the elevator. I thought I was getting away, but I couldn't do it. He snatched my eye. You're getting away so easily. We bumped heads a couple times. So, you know, that's probably what led up to me
Starting point is 00:37:49 not being a part of the whole thing, you know, because, you know, when it was time to go on tour, everybody was straight, had their tickets. You know, I'm charged up. I had luggage and shit ready to go.
Starting point is 00:38:05 I'm like, shit, I'm going with y'all. And I didn't have shit. You know, I didn't have nothing at the airport. It was like, you not going. You know, you ain't going. So I was fucked up. You wasn't going because you was affiliated with Def Jam? It was like, nigga, you not going.
Starting point is 00:38:21 Like, even though I'm down, I've been fighting with these niggas. We done had fun together, all that. It's like, nigga, you not going. I, even though I'm down, I've been fighting with these niggas. We've been having fun together, all that. It's like, nigga, you're not going. I'm like,
Starting point is 00:38:28 oh, wow. You know who gave me a ride back, gave me a ride home after that was a member, Breeze. MC Breeze. MC Breeze.
Starting point is 00:38:41 Yeah. MC Breeze gave me a ride, him and my homegirl, Samara. They gave me a ride, him and my homegirl Samara. They gave me a ride home from the airport that day. You mean Samara? No, no. This is my homegirl Samara.
Starting point is 00:38:51 Okay. And from that day. So you were stranded on the road and they gave you a ride back home? I didn't have no way to get home, but she was up there. Yeah. She was up there because I think Breeze was going to sign with Death Row. Mm. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:39:04 So I asked him. That was my home where she used to hang around us all the time. So, you know, I asked her for a ride. So jumped in the car with them. And from that point on, I just said, this ain't going to work. You know, then I asked Dre. I'm like, what's going on? Like, what's up, man?
Starting point is 00:39:20 He was like, you got to be your own man. You know, you just got to do your own thing once so i was just like fucked up like i ain't with snoop i ain't with dre i ain't with dad's corrupt none of my homeboys they all out having fun doing this and doing that and i had to go back to my sister's floor i had my crater records the same crate that we we was using on the chronic i had my Crater Records, the same crate that we was using on the Chronic. I had my Crater Records. I had my mixer and my turntable, my MPC 60 drum machine, which I still got all that shit to this day. And just started doing my thing, man. And got a call from MC Breed and Tupac.
Starting point is 00:40:01 And that's when I produced. When they did their record together? Well Tupac It was MC Breed and them called me Rodney G called me And DOC had called me for Rodney G So they was like We want you to do some music for Breed
Starting point is 00:40:16 So I went up there with MC Breed And that's when I produced the record You Gotta Get Yours I Gotta Get Mine I didn't know You produced that record? I produced it. Pac came in the session and got on it.
Starting point is 00:40:32 It's in the Bay Area of Tupac. That's who that was. Yes, indeed. He moved to the Bay Area before he came to L.A. That's pre-Death Row. Yeah, that was pre-Death Row. And it's post-Digital Underground. It's right after that. Yeah, that's and it's after post Digital Underground it's right after
Starting point is 00:40:46 yeah that's what he's already he's got his record when he had Solder Story yeah yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:40:50 yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:40:50 yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:40:51 yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:40:51 yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:40:51 yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:40:51 yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:40:51 yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:40:52 yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:40:53 yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:40:53 yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:40:56 yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:40:58 yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:41:02 yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah out into the world. Wow. That MC Breed, Tupac. I can't believe you did that record, man. I got to give him up. That's a great record. And I turned around and did his whole album,
Starting point is 00:41:07 MC Breed, after that. And then that led to, you know, like once again with Endo Smoke, I hope I'm not talking too much. No, no, please, man. We fans, man. To Endo Smoke, that led to how Endo Smoke and me doing another record for Tupac,
Starting point is 00:41:23 a couple more records for Tupac, because I did Endo Smoke, like I said, on the Poetry of Justice soundtrack. And Pac heard that, and he called me, which I didn't even think it was him. I was like, this ain't Pac. I hung the phone up. So he called back and was like, this is Pac. This is Pac. We want to hold up. So it was him.
Starting point is 00:41:44 And then he told me, OK, I'm at Echo Sound. So I went up to Echo Sound. He asked me, did you produce the record on the Endo Smoke, right? I said, yes. He said, well, I need a record as well. So at that point, we just started. That was the first time I seen somebody roll a blimp. He Tupac. He had a gang of bad bitches in there. He had a gang of bad bitches in there.
Starting point is 00:42:12 I had glasses on with a little bit of tape on my glass. And I was like, God damn. And, uh, but they were showing me love. And, um, so he was asking me, he was's like warren what's up with you you know like what's happening you know i said i've just been going through a whole lot that's when i didn't get to do anything so he's like i've just been going through a whole lot uh you know i got into it with a cat out in lone which i had shoot out busting busting that motherfuckers um motherfuckers broke in my car All kind of shit So I was telling him all of this shit I was going through And he was just like damn that shit is crazy
Starting point is 00:42:51 So he was like you got a beat And I was like yeah Started going through my discs and shit Popping them in the drum machine And I came across the Wind Parade by Donald Byrd I had already had the beat done And it was the Boom boom boom Boom boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
Starting point is 00:43:12 He was like, I want that one right there. So I got it, gave it to him. They put it on tape. He went in there in the booth. And the engineer, you know how they quiet it? They shut the speakers off. It's just him and the booth and the engineer, you know how they quiet it? They shut the speakers off. It's just him and the engineer and the headphones. So he went in there for about 30 minutes and he came out that motherfucker and he told him to turn it up.
Starting point is 00:43:37 And it was the same beat I gave him. When it came on, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. He said, my definition of a thug, nigga. So he started, I said, goddamn, that shit is hard. So I said, this nigga. So he started busting. I paid the cards I was given. Thank God, he was busting.
Starting point is 00:43:54 And he started talking about some of the shit that I was telling him. I was telling him. So I'm like, goddamn, this motherfucker put the shit in the goddamn truck. Along with some other shit. So I was like, this is crazy. So he was like, I heard and he was like, my definition of a thug, nigga? And that was it. So he
Starting point is 00:44:13 said, Warren, can you put some scratches and stuff in there? So I was like, hell yeah. So I did, it was Roxanne Shante. I said, he retires this season to be serving. And then I had Richard Pryor scratch the number. What you doing? And I took Snoop'sante. I said, it was tears this season to be serving. And then I had Richard Pryor scratch the number. It was what you doing?
Starting point is 00:44:28 And I took Snoop's voice and I said, it was mobbing like a motherfucker. It was tears this season to be serving. It was what you doing? Mobbing like a motherfucker. So that was right after he said,
Starting point is 00:44:38 my definition of a thug nigga, which became his single, this Thug Life single off the Poetic Justice soundtrack, which catapulted this Thug Life single off the Poetic Justice soundtrack, which catapulted the Thug Life album. Big Psych, Lil Psych, Lil Rated R, Mac 10, Macadocious Mac 10, not the Englewood Mac 10, but Mac 10, Macadocious, Runner, all of them, they came in there at the same time because they was thug life.
Starting point is 00:45:06 And one of their homies that got killed named Kato. So Pac was like, Warren, you got something for me to do a song about my homeboy that just got killed in Detroit. This was like, they just told him in there, so he was fucked up. And I said, I got one for you. And that's when I did the How Long Will They Mourn Me. Boom, boom, boom, boom.
Starting point is 00:45:27 How long will they mourn me? Boom, boom, boom. So he was like, he did the song. So he was like, I got to get somebody on the hook, man, to sing. So I called Nate. Back then, it wasn't on navigation, so I had to tell Nate.
Starting point is 00:45:43 Oh, yeah. Make your left-hand way costume. And Roscoe's make the U-turn. Yeah, go ahead. So it was Navigation, and Nate came up there and did his part. I wish it was another. How long will they mourn my brother?
Starting point is 00:45:59 That shit was cold. And then that led to Lie to Kick It. And then it led to other records that I produced for him. And that shit, like I said, Pac and Breed was the first motherfuckers to give me my shot at production-wise. And by the way, remember I told you about the chain that got snatched? You still got that motherfucker to this day. God damn it.
Starting point is 00:46:28 Put that shit up on eBay. Put it on eBay, God damn it. I'm about to sell Kanye's hat. I ain't a buster now. People don't think that I'm a buster. I was just in a bad situation. A no-win situation. Shit.
Starting point is 00:46:42 You know? Yes. Yeah. Hold on. Did you, early on, production-wise, did you feel that you needed to have a different sound than Dre? Most definitely. I mean...
Starting point is 00:46:54 Like, was that something consciously you were like, I got to sound different? I got to pick different samples? I just wanted to create my own lane and not have people say, oh, the reason why he doing this is because he with Dre and this and that and this. But my music ear developed from my father. My dad, Warren, Warren, Warren Jr. No, no, no. Now, my dad married his mother, you know, when I was a young kid.
Starting point is 00:47:23 And so my dad, he used to play music for me all day. Like we would sit in his house because he would come pick me up from my mom's. And he would take me and just listen to music all day, which was jazz. So that pretty much was instilled in me. And that's what comes out whenever I do production. I always have like a feel good to whatever I do. And that's just what I'm about. I love the feel good, you know, shit.
Starting point is 00:47:51 And that right there is what made my style what it is and what it was. And, you know, I didn't never try to be like Dre. But he taught me the game as far as like The MPC Like the technical side of it Yeah the MPC 60 Him and 187 From above the law
Starting point is 00:48:13 Both taught me Taught me You know how to work The MPC 60 And he also taught me How to splice tape Put that shit together With the alcohol
Starting point is 00:48:22 And all that shit He taught me a lot of shit Y'all young niggas don't know this shit. Y'all young niggas got it easy. Yeah. You're over there pressing one button, your record done. That's the analog thing. You heard this man?
Starting point is 00:48:33 Cut goddamn tape and alcohol. Holy moly guacamole. No, it's all good. And the love that he showed me was the love I showed back by going and searching for all those records, a lot of the records that we used on the Chronic. So that was my part. I would go get the records. I would take them, sample them up, and then I'd let him hear it.
Starting point is 00:48:56 I'm like, Dre, listen to this. He'd listen. He's like, that shit is hard. If he liked it, he would take that shit and he would change it up, do a couple things. Like, Let Me Ride That was a break record that I bought I bought the break record to that In Torrance
Starting point is 00:49:11 Right down the street from Audio Achievements I still got the break record to this day You still got your third grade lunch money I can tell I might It was a little piece in there That A mic. I ain't gonna lie. But it was a little piece in there that, that, that,
Starting point is 00:49:29 boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom,
Starting point is 00:49:36 boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom,
Starting point is 00:49:36 boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom,
Starting point is 00:49:37 boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom,
Starting point is 00:49:38 boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom,
Starting point is 00:49:40 boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom,
Starting point is 00:49:40 boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom,
Starting point is 00:49:40 boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom,
Starting point is 00:49:42 boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, and let me ride. It was all on that one record. And Dre took that shit
Starting point is 00:49:45 and pieced that motherfucker together. When I heard it again, I was like, God damn. Even like the skits, like the These Nuts skit. That shit was all organic. I called my homegirl and told her, I said, shit,
Starting point is 00:50:00 what you doing today? She was like, I'm getting my nails done and da, da, da. I said, what shit? I said, hey, did What's Your Name get at you today? She was like, oh, I'm getting my nails done and da-da-da. I said, what's shit? I said, hey, did what you name him get at you? And she was like, who? I said, these nuns.
Starting point is 00:50:13 And she went crazy. She was, oh, nigga. You know, she started tripping up. But that was an organic skit. I told Dre, turn the mic on. And we just did that just in the studio one day, just sitting there. And then just a lot of the skits like the, you really don't understand,
Starting point is 00:50:30 don't you? In order for us to make this thing work, we got to get rid of the pimps, you know, all that. That was a record, that record that would, mind you, what I did is I bought all the black exploitation albums. It was from a place called, as the record turns,
Starting point is 00:50:47 off of Melrose. So that little part in there was a way I was feeling, like me and him as brothers. He probably, he don't know that, but this is just something that I have had in my heart. Like, you really don't understand, do you? In order for us to make this thing work you got to get rid of the pimp
Starting point is 00:51:08 stuff you know that skit right there was something that was something that I was feeling and he used that motherfucker like he was letting it off your chest yeah you know but it was that's how I felt with you know with him but like all the stuff that we did like we did a gang of dope ass shit
Starting point is 00:51:22 you know and like I said Dre is is a motherfucking genius in the studio. And he's got no chaser. He's going to tell you straight up, motherfucker, if that shit whack, he's going to say, that shit is whack. He ain't playing no games. But I had a great time just doing know, just doing the Chronic with him, you know, and I actually taught Daz, you know, from him teaching me, him in 187 teaching me to me teaching Daz and Daz also helping out with
Starting point is 00:51:52 us on the Chronic, so it was me and Chris the Glove. So, I mean, the shit was just, it was amazing. Did you guys know what you were creating at that time, That it was that special We just was doing music
Starting point is 00:52:08 Just loving to do Good music And But it was inspired by The riots that was going on You know At that time The Rodney King shit
Starting point is 00:52:16 Jumped off So it was It was motherfuckers Doing a lot of crazy shit Man Tearing shit up Putting shit on fire I was in it Don't get me wrong now
Starting point is 00:52:26 god damn it actually me, DLC corrupt and Ice-T, we was at the radio station I think was it 102 I think it was KGLH the nigga Ice-T he'll tell you, they seen me coming
Starting point is 00:52:44 I went in the store, out when the store came, ran out the store with a whole thing of beer running by the window. And he talked about that shit too. He said, that nigga Warren crazy. But all of that stuff inspired us to do the Chronic
Starting point is 00:52:59 and everything that was going on from the parties, that's Ain't No Fun came from them parties because that's what we was doing during that time. Because they was having parties here, parties there, parties during the riots. Right. Wait, during the riots? Yeah, hell yeah. It was crazy because it was a peace treaty.
Starting point is 00:53:15 Yeah, the peace treaty happened, right. Oh, that's right. Yeah, it was a peace treaty. So it was niggas coming from everywhere and just partying like a motherfucker. And shit, we even had a party where Dre told, he told all these, it was a gang of niggas coming from everywhere and just partying like a motherfucker. And shit, we even had a party where Dre told, he told all these, it was a gang of niggas in his house.
Starting point is 00:53:29 He said, y'all motherfuckers got to get up out of here. So he had to, he pulled out the strap. Motherfuckers just like, whatever. No, they wasn't tripping. Shit, he had a closet right by the door where he had the choppers.
Starting point is 00:53:41 I went in there, grabbed that motherfucker chopper. Clack, clack. He said, get the fuck out. And all them motherfuckers started moving their asses about that motherfucker. Yeah, and my only thing is I wish, you know, I wish I was more business-minded back then
Starting point is 00:53:58 instead of being so, like... My thing was, like thing was, like I said, to show the love back to him as far as teaching me. So that's from you. You taught me as a pup
Starting point is 00:54:16 and this is the reward for you teaching me by me and my homeboys coming back, putting this record together for you. You know what I mean? I just wish I would've knew
Starting point is 00:54:24 about publishing back then because that would be lovely right now. You know? But, you know... You're not telling me you didn't get publishing on a chronic. I didn't get shit on that. He's telling me that. I didn't get shit.
Starting point is 00:54:36 I didn't get no credit. Snoop gave me some credit. No co-production. He said, Snoop said my name on Stranded on Death Row. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. So you produced on the Chronic and never got credited? I didn't get shit on that motherfucker.
Starting point is 00:54:53 Really? Yeah, but I wasn't tripping. I was there for Dre, you know what I mean? You know, helping Dre. Wow. Yeah. Hold on, I'm going to come back to the Chronic, because I'm going to ask you something that slips my I want to ask you something Before it slips my mind
Starting point is 00:55:05 Because I have We seldomly meet people Who knew Tupac Prior to Death Row And who knew Tupac While he was on Death Row Right So
Starting point is 00:55:13 And I want to get back To the chronic But What was the difference In your opinion Meeting Tupac Like you said Tupac gave you
Starting point is 00:55:21 One of your first Yeah Looks What was the difference Between him then And then him And did you meet him Digital Underground days too Yeah meeting Tupac. Like you said, Tupac gave you one of your first looks. What was the difference between him then and then him after? And did you meet him Digital Underground days, too? Yeah, yeah. He was always cool, just cool, kind of hype, bouncing around the music, get to jumping.
Starting point is 00:55:36 Get to bouncing. He was just a fun dude, just fun. Later on, you know, once he was doing his thing, actually, that was around the time he had got out, he had got bailed out. And we was at the House of Blues. Like, this was right after the incident I had. So we was at the House of Blues. Oh, they took a chain? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:56:02 Yeah, we was at the House of Blues. And he was fresh out. He seen me. He was hugging me. We hugging and shit. You know, he was like, shit, let's link up, man. So we linked up. I mean, not linked up, but we was just like, we're going to link up.
Starting point is 00:56:15 So he called me. And he was like, Warren, come to the studio. Can-Am. I said, shit, I ain't coming up there. And that was the same studio? Yeah. I said, I'm not coming up there. And that was the same studio? Yeah. I'm not coming up there. I said, let me book the studio, and you come over to where I'm at.
Starting point is 00:56:30 That's fine. Because when you come over to where I'm at, I'm going to make sure I got hitters everywhere. Because I'm not getting ready to let nobody come in here tripping on me again. That ain't going to happen. Okay, let me ask this. This is me out of pure ignorance, right? Because I don't know. He was a little different.
Starting point is 00:56:45 I ain't going to lie. That's what I'm asking. Because the way he was talking to me on the phone, I'm like, you know. It wasn't the same phone. He wasn't the same, but he was more serious. It was still him, but it was a different version of him. Yeah, he was just more serious. And another crazy thing is that when he was locked up, me and Richie Rich was tight.
Starting point is 00:57:07 I used to come all the way from L.A. up to the bay. Me and him just used to ride around in our trucks and shit, skirting, doing crazy shit, having fun, tearing up the town. Him and Pac used to talk a lot on the phone, writing letters, talking and everything. So he was telling me about what was going on with him. So I told Rich, I said, you tell Tupac I'm going to bail his ass out. Oh, wow. So I was going to put the money. I didn't give a fuck about signing.
Starting point is 00:57:40 You ain't got to do shit. You just want to help. Give me a verse. That's it. You know, but I just wanted him to get out because I felt for him. You just want to help. Give me a verse. That's it. But I just wanted him to get out because I felt for him. You know, that shit was fucked up. Got beat to the punch.
Starting point is 00:57:50 Wow. You know, Shug got him out. You know, I wish I could have got him out. You know, he'd have been doing his own thing free. At this time, Shug was still like a loved CEO. Yes, he did. Because I remember, I remember like, I remember when him, Bell in two parts.
Starting point is 00:58:06 He was a boss. Yeah, I remember people like saluting that. I remember people like, wow, Snoop, I'm still bossed up. And saying that. Did you ever think,
Starting point is 00:58:18 because me knowing you personally, I know you got family in New York. I know you got everything. Yes, indeed. So at some point, Death Row went from our favorite West Coast label to, wait a minute, these niggas hate us.
Starting point is 00:58:31 I knew that had to be weird for you. I mean, it wasn't that they hate New York. It wasn't New York. It was Cruz. Cruz against Cruz. Exactly. It was like them hating Bad Boy. Right.
Starting point is 00:58:50 Or them hating Russell and Lior. Right. It wasn't New York. Because remember that Death Row East with Eric B. But that was later. No, that was in the midst of all that. No, Death Row East came after that award show where everyone kind of, no, that was the same time. Remember, this is a short period of time. It's not a long period of time.
Starting point is 00:59:04 No, you're right. You're right, you're right. They did have definitely It's in the midst of it, yeah. And they signed Craig Mack. Or they were signing Craig Mack. He was the first artist. Damn, you remember. You got to smoke some weed.
Starting point is 00:59:16 You remember me too, Sean, motherfucker. This nigga remember everything. It was like some of the most fun I had in my life. You know, when it was my turn, like after I got signed to Def Jam, and it was my time to get on that goddamn plane to come to New York, I called the twins. I said, cuz, can y'all fly with me to New York?
Starting point is 00:59:37 This is the time where the builders that already got kicked down, Snoop and them kicked about. The way you say that sounds wild. You know what? I'm not sure, but it might have, it was around them times. But what was crazy
Starting point is 00:59:52 is I flew to New York and I had signed with Def Jam already in the hotels at the Embassy Suites on 47th and 7th and I got a phone call and I was like,
Starting point is 01:00:03 hello? It was like, this is LL Cool J. And I said, I'm like, this ain't LL Cool J. I'm a huge fan of LL too. And I was like, I didn't hang up. But I said, this ain't LL Cool J. He said, man, he said, this is LL Cool J. Come downstairs.
Starting point is 01:00:21 The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration in the United States. Recipients have done the improbable, showing immense bravery and sacrifice in the name of something much bigger than themselves. This medal is for the men who went down that day. It's for the families of those who didn't make it. I'm J.R. Martinez. I'm a U.S. Army veteran myself. And I'm honored to tell you the stories of these heroes on the new season of Medal of Honor, Stories of Courage from Pushkin Industries and iHeart Podcast.
Starting point is 01:00:54 From Robert Blake, the first black sailor to be awarded the medal, to Daniel Daly, one of only 19 people to have received the Medal of Honor twice. These are stories about people who have distinguished themselves by acts of valor going above and beyond the call of duty. You'll hear about what they did, what it meant, and what their stories tell us about the nature of courage and sacrifice. Listen to Medal of Honor on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A lot of times the big economic forces we hear about on the news show up in our lives in small ways. Three or four days a week, I would buy two cups of banana pudding. But the price has gone up, so now I only buy one. The demand curve in action, and that's just one of the things we'll be covering on Everybody's Business from Bloomberg Businessweek.
Starting point is 01:01:49 I'm Max Chavkin. And I'm Stacey Vanek-Smith. Every Friday, we will be diving into the biggest stories in business, taking a look at what's going on, why it matters, and how it shows up in our everyday lives. But guests like Businessweek editor Brad Stone, sports reporter Randall Williams, and consumer spending expert Amanda Mull will take you inside the boardrooms, the backrooms, even the signal chats that make our economy tick.
Starting point is 01:02:14 Hey, I want to learn about VeChain. I want to buy some blockchain or whatever it is that they're doing. So listen to Everybody's Business on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. My name is Brendan Patrick Hughes, host of Divine Intervention. This is a story about radical nuns in combat boots and wild-haired priests trading blows with J. Edgar Hoover in a hell-bent effort to sabotage a war. J. Edgar Hoover was furious. Somebody violated the FBI, and he wanted to bring the
Starting point is 01:02:48 Catholic left to its knees. The FBI went around to all their neighbors and said to them, do you think these people are good Americans? It's got heists, tragedy, a trial of the century, and the goddamnedest love story you've ever heard. I picked up the phone and my thought was, this is the most important phone call I'll ever make in my life. I couldn't believe it. I mean, Brendan, it was divine intervention. You can now binge all
Starting point is 01:03:15 10 episodes of Divine Intervention on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. So I'm like, shit. He knew what the hotel was at? or wherever you get your podcasts. So I went downstairs. I told the twins, man, come with me downstairs. This dude talking about the LL Cool J. Back then, on the airplanes, you could sneak shit good on the airplanes. Yeah, yeah. It's open Latin. Before 9-11.
Starting point is 01:03:52 I had my stick. I had my stick. So I grabbed my shit, black, black, put it on, went down there, and it was LL. Did he lick his lips? Come on, man. That's just the way LL. Did he lick his lips? I was so... Come on, man. That's just who LL is. That's the question you gotta ask.
Starting point is 01:04:09 That's just who he is. I was so starstruck that I didn't care what he did because I was at that point because I was like, this is LL motherfucking Cooley. Man. And the nigga took me to his house,
Starting point is 01:04:24 his grandmother's house He even showed me the sidekick That he And Tina got a big old butt That light green sidekick He showed me his clothes His shoes Clothes
Starting point is 01:04:34 I had never seen that many clothes In my motherfucking life And I was tripping Then Heavy D called me Oh rest in peace Heavy D He was like man keep doing your thing Yeah rest in peace Heavy D That was my guy Actually me My first tour was on peace, heavy D, man. Yeah, rest in peace, heavy D. That was my guy. Actually,
Starting point is 01:04:46 my first tour was on tour with him, him and R. Kelly. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Like I said, it was all love, man. Just being
Starting point is 01:05:04 over there. And Russell had a young partner, and his name was Benny Ratt from Harlem. He took us under his wing. And Big Bell, who was a security, he was from Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, right on Biggie Nem Street. And they took me all over New York, man. I went everywhere. Like, I told them I want to see everything. They took me to all the boroughs.
Starting point is 01:05:27 Benny Ratt took me to, right at late night in Harlem, it was like three, four in the morning, and we in that motherfucker, and I'm seeing kids outside playing and shit, running around, hair getting braided,
Starting point is 01:05:38 motherfuckers out there playing music. I'm like, what the fuck is going on? In L.A., these motherfuckers sleeping at 10.30. This shit is crazy. So it tripped me out. And the love that I was being showed
Starting point is 01:05:49 was just, was incredible. Everybody was like, we love y'all shit out here. We love y'all shit. They just don't play it that much on the radio, but we love y'all shit.
Starting point is 01:05:57 I didn't have no incidents where motherfuckers was like, this motherfucker, actually I did at one. I was at Willie Burgers. Willie Burgers, damn, that's old was like, this motherfucker, actually I did that once. I was at Willie Burgers. Willie Burgers, damn. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:06:07 That's old school. And this motherfucker rolled up, he was in a wheelchair, and he was thugged out. You were Warren G at this time? I was Warren G, me and my brother-in-law, Kenny Mack.
Starting point is 01:06:17 We rolled up, and he's like, this West Coast motherfucker, he's banging. So I'm like, shit. I'm like, what's up? He's like, motherfuckers out here. I'm like, it's West Coast motherfucker. He's banging. So I'm like, shit. I'm like, what's up? He's like, motherfuckers out here. I'm like, shit.
Starting point is 01:06:29 I said, Kenny, I'm going to the car, man. So I went to the car, got in the van. Once again, put my shit right back, came back over. And then, you know, told him. I was just like, check this out, homie. We ain't out here trying to start shit. We ain't tripping on that East Coast, West Coast shit. We just out here.
Starting point is 01:06:49 I'm on Def Jam. You know, so I made a couple phone calls to some high-powered guys from up out of Queens and Harlem. And one of the cat that owned the Soul Food Spot in Harlem, he even came out. I forgot his name. But he kind of— Are you talking about the Copelands? You talking about Copelands with the Soul Food Spot? Harlem, he even came out. I forgot his name, but he... Are you talking about the Copelands? You talking about Copelands with the Soul Food Spot? It's right up the block.
Starting point is 01:07:09 It's Sylvia's or Copeland's, something like that. Sylvia's, okay, okay. And he came up, like they came, motherfuckers came out to cuss. Don't want to say, you know, I don't want to mention all of my guys
Starting point is 01:07:19 from up out of New York, but they bought, when I say bosses, super bosses. And they, because they was locked up with Baby Papa right here in the fed bosses. Because they was locked up with Baby Papa right here
Starting point is 01:07:26 in the feds. So that was the connection. I see my dad with Cream and Snoop. Yes, indeed. It was some calls made and that motherfucker, he turned, he was soft as Peter Cottontail. But like I said, it was all love, man.
Starting point is 01:07:45 I had a lot of love there. And just being able to hang with Russell. I met Andre Harrell, who was incredible. Like, I still got ideas in my head that he would tell me. You know, every time I see him, because whenever he in L.A. and I was somewhere and he was around, I was like, Andre. He's like, hey, what's up, Warren?
Starting point is 01:08:05 Got some weed. I'm like, yeah. I used to blaze with him every time. Bomb ass weed, too. And he'd just get to smiling and shit. You know how he had that laugh? Yeah, just, you know, we just, he used to just give me ideas.
Starting point is 01:08:17 We'd smoke with Jordan. He'd tell me a bunch of ideas. And I still got some of that shit locked in my head. You know, I just haven't did it. I'm going to wait until it's right to do them. But that was the kind of love I was getting from, I ain't going to lie, I even went into some of them modeling parties
Starting point is 01:08:33 and I was just like kind of tripping like, hey, shit, Russell, where the fuck you got me at? Shit. He said, Warren, don't worry about what this is. It's a lot of beautiful women. Just relax. So, we just, you know, because back then, motherfuckers would be tripping, was tripping off of shit back then. So, it was like, damn.
Starting point is 01:08:59 So, I just blazed some bud. Me, Russell, and Andre Herrera, my homeboy, my brother-in-law, Kenny, we sat there and just blazing that motherfucker. And it was just beautiful women everywhere. It was incredible. But everything that I did, even the Christmas parties, everything was love. Yeah. I remember we had an incident in a Christmas party, Def Jam, in a Christmas party. But it was West Coast motherfuckers
Starting point is 01:09:25 against West Coast motherfuckers. Well, shit. We need to hear about this. And it was me, Nate, and Snoop, and all of us, and it was Domino and them people. Oh.
Starting point is 01:09:33 It was Nate and Domino. Domino, Domino, whatever. Baghetto Jam. Yeah. Him and Nate had a statue. Don't he got S-girls? How you gonna have him
Starting point is 01:09:41 in the beep when he go to S-girls? Domino, Domino. Don't underestimate nobody. I know, I know. Him and Nate used to sing together a lot S-Girls? Domino, Domino. Don't underestimate nobody. I know, I know. Nate used to sing together a lot. Oh, what?
Starting point is 01:09:47 Domino and Nate used to get down a lot. Okay. But they bumped heads. You know, it was like, okay, so. Nate and them bumped heads?
Starting point is 01:09:56 Nate and Domino was kind of like beefing. They was beefing. I ain't going to say kind of. Right, right. At that time,
Starting point is 01:10:04 that's when we filmed the show. When we was in Philadelphia, that's when I got into it. You don't know At that time That's when we filmed the show When we was in Philadelphia That's when I got into it You don't know the movie right The movie the show I got into it The motherfucker in Philadelphia He threw a CD at me
Starting point is 01:10:12 I told him Man don't do that shit again I stopped the music And then he did the shit again I jumped off the motherfucker's stack Bam Just sucked the shit out his ass And them motherfucking Muslims
Starting point is 01:10:22 Just like they say on the show Where they You march you in We we gonna march your ass out They came and grabbed my ass And marched me straight out that motherfucker All the way to the train station And sent me to New York Russell made the motherfucker send me to New York
Starting point is 01:10:36 And then that's when we had the party Later on that night And uh We bumped heads It was a big old giant melee. We're like, what's happening? What's up? You know, all that shit.
Starting point is 01:10:51 So Fat Joe had a crew with him. He came over there, him and a gang of motherfuckers, like boom, they came over there to us. It was like, what's happening? We with y'all. Them motherfuckers tripping y'all. What's up?
Starting point is 01:11:03 We're going to tear this motherfucker up. So now it was a gang of us. And it was cold. And then they, you know, them motherfuckers like all the executives and shit started jumping in the middle. So it got kind of
Starting point is 01:11:17 balanced out and they had left and we partied, man. But I'm telling you it was so many incidents, so many you know, things that was happening out there. I'm going you, it was so many incidents, so many things that was happening out there. I may even tell you this one right here. This was... I had a friend.
Starting point is 01:11:34 That was Jacob York. Yeah, Jacob York. He said, Warren, he said, do you want to go see Biggie? So I said, hell yeah, I'll go see him. This was at the time when him and Pac was few. This was when we was at the club in New York.
Starting point is 01:11:51 I forgot what that club was. Palladium the Tunnel? It wasn't the Palladium or the Tunnel. This was like a little, it wasn't too big. And you walk down, it was downstairs. Green Place? Greenhouse? It was downstairs.
Starting point is 01:12:04 It wasn't Cheetah's. It was, this one was, Place? Greenhouse? It was downstairs. It wasn't Cheetahs. It was, this one was, USA? Club USA? Some shit like that. It could be. Okay. But whatever it went down,
Starting point is 01:12:13 I think it was USA or something like that. If you keep trying, you'll get it. It went down and it was static in there Because that You know Biggie and him Was in there But it wasn't like
Starting point is 01:12:28 Super beefed in Right And So I mean you know what I take that back It was It was
Starting point is 01:12:34 I came It wasn't like To where niggas wanted to shoot And all that shit But it was just like Okay you over here You over here It was a standoff a little bit
Starting point is 01:12:42 Yeah so Jacob York asked me If I wanted to meet Biggie. So I said, yeah. So he took me to Bed-Stuy. It was me, Jacob York, Ron G, my uncle Ron G, and Big Bell from Bed-Stuy who lived on that same block. And we pulled up. As Biggie was right there, jumped out and started chopping it up. As big he was right there, jumped out and started chopping it up. You know, we was talking about everything, music,
Starting point is 01:13:08 everything that was going on and then we started talking about you know, with him and Tupac, you know, them having beef and shit and he was just like, he tripping on me and this, that, and this. So he was telling me everything. So I said, well, how about this? What I do,
Starting point is 01:13:23 when I get a chance, I get out of pocket and say, look, I talked to this nigga big and this is what he said. All right. You niggas get this shit together and stop that shit. All right. But I couldn't get to him because it was all the other motherfuckers that was around. When you say him, you're talking about Pop. Get to Tupac. Okay, go ahead.
Starting point is 01:13:41 To really talk to him about what he said. Wow. That's wild. Just trying to get the message to him about what he said. Wow. That's wild. Just trying to get the message to him. So you telling me in some world that if you would've got to Tupac, maybe this...
Starting point is 01:13:50 It probably wouldn't have been as bad as it was because I would've pulled him to the side and really talked to him like, look, this is what this nigga told me. We had a motherfucking...
Starting point is 01:14:00 We walked to the corner. Lil' C was there. Wow. We walked to the corner, drunk, private stock, all that shit because I'm like, I want a private stock. I' C's was there. We walked to the corner, drunk, private stock, all that shit. Because, you know, I'm like, I want a private stock.
Starting point is 01:14:08 I'm for it. It was a court. I want a private stock. I said, let's go, man. We walked, drinking private stock the whole night. Did you think it would have got
Starting point is 01:14:16 as deadly as it got? I didn't think it would be no, I didn't think it was going to be any gunplay, period, with any of that. Because battle's been happening in, like, hip-hop. Yeah, it might be. Motherf didn't think it was going to be any gunplay, period, with any of that. Because battle's been happening, like, just hip hop,
Starting point is 01:14:27 whatever. It's like, you motherfuckers going to squab, it'll be some, it'll be some squab and shit, that's it. Right. That's where I thought it was,
Starting point is 01:14:35 you know, I didn't, I didn't, that's where I had it at, you know, but, I'm sure the people that have been tuning in, they've been hearing him,
Starting point is 01:14:44 dropping a lot of names And I want these people to understand That I've been on Def Jam as well And Def Jam has a history And they have a portfolio When they sign artists They want you to understand the artists That came before them
Starting point is 01:14:58 And one of the first people they tell you about Is LL They say that LL You know Open up Def Jam or whatever, whatever, whatever. Then they say another artist, and then the third artist they always tell you is Warren G.
Starting point is 01:15:11 Oh, wow. And what they say is Warren G. I know you're a humble guy. Save the label. Warren G single-handedly saved Def Jam. Oh, yeah. You don't have to be a humble guy. I know you're a humble guy, but I'm going to brag for you.
Starting point is 01:15:28 That shit is real. Just think about it. Just think about it. Whatever was happening, East Coast at the time could not hold on to whatever torch that we had on at that time.
Starting point is 01:15:39 West Coast was killing it. And you, single-handedly, this is what they said. It's not a rumor. This is all facts they'll sit down and they'll tell you financial statements to prove that how the hell how dope
Starting point is 01:15:51 is that for you to know that hold on my bad that you single handedly they say you you single handedly say fucking one of the most iconic iconic rap labels in history. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:16:07 How the fuck does that feel? I mean, it feels great. You know, it was just the love was given back to them for believing in me. You know, because nobody wasn't really believing in me, and they gave me that me, you know, cause I, nobody wasn't really believing in me.
Starting point is 01:16:25 And they gave me that, that lane, you know, that lane to, to get my music out so people could hear it and say, okay, this nigga is dope. He got dope. His shit is dope. And they opened that up and the, and the reward to them for that was helping them. I didn't know they was in a situation that they was in. I was like, damn, when I learned it, they was like doing my shit with credit cards, like credit cards. Wow. You know, but they had got me the bread and everything.
Starting point is 01:16:56 And, you know, it was just, it just felt great, man, just to be able to, for them to give me my shot and then me blow up and then also help the company and then help the company to where it opens the door for Jay-Z. I was about to say, you can think of it in a way where Jay-Z, DMX, Redman, they might not exist if it wasn't for the moves. Let's make some noise. I'm sure they would have. Yes, it is. I'm saying they broke orders, so they probably would have got picked up by somebody. Yeah, but I'm saying, we got to deal with facts.
Starting point is 01:17:34 Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's the facts. Yeah. You know what I mean? But you didn't know it back then that that was happening, that you helped. No, I didn't. Well, and they told me the story later on down the line and then when I was saying, not Russell, but Lior, he would put these, you know,
Starting point is 01:17:49 how much money they was making up. They would put that shit up right in the office on Barrett. That's crazy. What the artist... 170 Barrett. What it made the company there. I seen a hundred million.
Starting point is 01:18:01 I was like, God damn. That's not my part in this. Where's my piece of this hundred million shit? They said you made a hundred million. I was like, God damn. Where's my piece of this hundred million shit? They said you made a hundred million? No, they made the company. Oh, the company.
Starting point is 01:18:11 Totally. Oh, God. Okay. And so I was like, damn, but I didn't, I made money, but I think, I wish I could have had
Starting point is 01:18:21 a part of that hundred million. Right. You know, so, you know, my thing is, I love Def Jam and I could, you a part of that $100 million. Right. You know, so, you know, my thing is I love Def Jam, and, you know, they gave me a shot to do my thing, man. And all I had asked was just let me get my master's. Y'all gave LL his. You know, let me get my master's.
Starting point is 01:18:40 That's all I wanted. You know, well, all I do want. You know, I don't want to wait until I'm old and a motherfucker. You haven't gotten them? Not yet. But you passed 30 years though, right? I'm at 30 in January. They didn't do it before that. They should give it before that. They're saying 35. Nah, nah.
Starting point is 01:18:55 Def Jam should give it back to you, man. It's just, and I'm just like, God damn. Have you spoken to the new president of Def Jam? The dude, from what I heard, the Luchin. Tunji. No, not him. The dude from UMG, the big dog.
Starting point is 01:19:10 Okay. Was the one that was just like, because Russell got at him like, can y'all give him his shit? But I'm like, Russell, y'all should have gave me the shit when y'all sold the motherfucker. Then you could have. You know what I mean? Give me my shit like y'all got LL. Shit gave him his shit. So I guess that's supposed to
Starting point is 01:19:29 come to me in about five or six years. Five or six more years. But I'm like, shit, I don't want to be old and the motherfucker trying to... You know what I mean? But that's all I want. You know, for me helping you guys turn into a billion dollar company
Starting point is 01:19:46 Right My shit ain't making A gang of money like that every year It make money It ain't like Kanye's catalog Or his shit Or you know
Starting point is 01:19:57 Guys like that Y'all got all that shit My shit is crumbs Compared to all that shit over there I ain't gonna say crumbs But It's That's stupid right there. Do right by you.
Starting point is 01:20:09 But let me ask you, if you was to get your masters back, would you re-release it? How would you re-release it? I'd re-release it. I'd redo everything, start, you know, join with a company that could do the administering for me and also the licensing and all this stuff for me and just do it like they're doing, you know, join with a company that could do that ministering for me and also the license and all this stuff for me and just do it like they're doing, you know, and everything come around, making sure everybody that was involved get their cut. You know, everybody that was on there, I find it all. OK, boom, this comes to this person. This come to that person.
Starting point is 01:20:40 I set it up automatically where it goes. And so they know where's my shit at. I don't want to hear that shit. I'm going to get you your bread. You're going to get your bread. You're going to get your bread. Everybody going to be happy. And then I own this shit
Starting point is 01:20:52 because this is something that my kids can have. You know, my master publisher. And that's, you know, that's all I wanted out the deal. You know, out the whole thing. Now, back then, I didn't give a fuck. I didn't know what Mansfield was.
Starting point is 01:21:09 I didn't know what nothing was. I was just... You didn't know publishing? I didn't know nothing. I was just... I was just trying to just do my music. I wanted people to hear my music. But I seen one of my first royalty checks.
Starting point is 01:21:23 I was like, shit. This what the fuck you get for doing this shit? I was like, God damn, I went crazy after that. I started doing all kinds of shit. Like, let me get some more. Oh, it was good. Hell, yeah. I was like, shit,
Starting point is 01:21:36 because I didn't do a publishing deal. They was offering me that shit. They was like, we want to give you 300 here, 500,000 here. I said, shit, if they offer me that much, I can make more than that. So I said, hold up, let me fill this out a little bit.
Starting point is 01:21:51 And when that shit happened, whoo, I was like, God damn. But I did do an administering deal, because you got to have somebody to get that shit outside of the record company shit, the other shit. To the movies.
Starting point is 01:22:06 Yeah, yeah, yeah, the licenses and all that. But just, I wanted people to hear my shit. I wasn't caring about publishing or this, that, and this. I was just, I just wanted people to hear my music
Starting point is 01:22:20 and just to see, be able to go around the world and tour in Europe for three months, come home for two months after doing press and go back in about two weeks to do three months. I was in Europe five months doing press and tours and shit. And then being able to rock in here in the United States and everybody love you from everywhere
Starting point is 01:22:39 and be able to get out with Lionel Richie at a festival in Europe and the Bee Gees and Lauryn Hill and the Fugees. We was all at the same gig in San Remo Italy Festival. You know, and I thought that shit was like, you know,
Starting point is 01:22:56 a hip-hop motherfucker. You like, what the fuck is this shit I'm in here? But look, it was a trip because it was quiet. The whole motherfucking place, the whole show. My shit, so I'm thinking something wrong. They not budging.
Starting point is 01:23:13 They just sitting there looking at me the whole time. I'm performing. I'm trying to rock and shit. And I'm like, damn, these motherfuckers ain't moving. So it's kind of taking me somewhere. But I said, I got to keep going. So I did the whole entire show. And at the end of the show, when I was telling,
Starting point is 01:23:27 I said, thank you guys for letting me come out here. Them motherfuckers said, they clapped for about 15 to 20 minutes. They just kept doing this shit. They were just doing this. I'm like, man, what the fuck is this shit? And they had like that opera looking shit. We was in a,
Starting point is 01:23:43 you remember that shit, Ron? That shit, he had all that shit up there. We was in a, you remember that shit, Ron? That shit, he had all that shit up there. It was crazy. I had fights over in that motherfucker and everything. You had fights everywhere, Warren. You a wild motherfucker. Hey, no, because when you from the States, you know, whether it's New York or California, they love you out there, but then you got that thug element too.
Starting point is 01:24:06 You know, a couple times, motherfuckers was testing my nuts. I'm 2-0. I had two knockouts out there, two of them. Yeah, one of the motherfuckers, I swear to God, this motherfucker was like, this was a big motherfucker.
Starting point is 01:24:20 Like, he was big. And I ain't gonna lie, I was scared of the motherfucker. Like, this motherfucker, he gonna big and uh i ain't gonna lie i was scared of the motherfucker like this motherfucker he gonna fuck me up so because he he was he was mashing on me and one of the twins and my cousin kevin we was in the club and he just just started tripping like like what's up like you know i'm like no we cool man i signed the uh shit for the girls and all that shit. I signed it. He still was like, this stuff, like, whatever they language. It was in Swede. And so I told my cousin and twin, I said, look, you walk this way,
Starting point is 01:24:54 you walk that way, and you walk that way, so they going to want to know what's up. So I went that way, he walked that way, he walked that way. So they, like, it was kind of like we all went different ways. So I got a chance where I could, I don't know how it happened, but I could see out in the front of the motherfuckers. So I hollered, run, these motherfuckers up in there tripping. So I'm telling my guys they up in there tripping.
Starting point is 01:25:15 So they sent security in there, brought us all out. So we coming out. They had them outside. They standing outside the door. So they bringing us out the club. And I'm like, this motherfucker that mashed on me, I feel like a straight bitch. So I'm like, I can't go out like that. You know, so I'm coming out that motherfucker.
Starting point is 01:25:35 So he's standing right there. So I had one opportunity to let this motherfucker know what time it is. He was standing right there. I just came. As soon as I came out, I just said, Bop! I hit that motherfucker hard as a motherfucker. That big motherfucker said,
Starting point is 01:25:50 Oh, he hit the ground. That motherfucker hit the ground. When he came back up, it took the whole motherfucking force to stop this motherfucker. And they had the shit in the news, everything the next day. Talking about Warren. He had a fight with the king of the park. Some crazy shit.
Starting point is 01:26:04 The king of the park. Yeah, shit. The king of the park. Yeah, and then the other one, I was in Italy. The motherfucker was tripping. I knocked him out right in the club. They thought my homeboy, he was doing security. They thought he did it. I walked over his ass and crept out. And me and my partner in crime, Kenny Mack, we walked out.
Starting point is 01:26:22 That motherfucker hopped in the cab and went to the hotel. Because I told Ron, I said, shit, I'm scared. I don't think I'm going to be able to go Come back home because that motherfucker looked It looked bad like he was Doing this shit I was scared to death but they got him up They got him up and My folks was just like Warren you fucked him up
Starting point is 01:26:38 You know but I felt bad Because I thought I really Damaged his ass because I hit him hard As a bitch I don't mean that as far as hitting a ass because I hit him hard as a bitch. I don't mean that as far as hitting a woman, but I hit him hard as a motherfucker. But Europe is a great place, man.
Starting point is 01:26:53 They always told me whenever you want to come back here, you can always come back here. Andy Lennox had a chance to chop with her. Tina Turner She okay What's Love got to do with it While I was there in Switzerland
Starting point is 01:27:10 Zerick Was that Zerick Yeah I love Zerick It was fun man It was fun I love Europe man Yeah Well Ron I'm sure Europe love you But we want to tell you that It was fun, man. It was fun. I love Europe, man. Mm-hmm. Yeah.

Starting point is 01:27:41 Your brother Snoop said it's better than a Grammy because it comes from his people. That's dope, man. Yeah, we want to give you flowers. They don't die in gold. I'm up here with the drink champ. That's right, God damn it. Yes, indeed.
Starting point is 01:28:04 Then we're going to get into Quick Time with Slime. I got one more question before to get Into Quick Time and Slime So I got one more question Before we get into Quick Time and Slime And that's a drinking game That we're going to do But let me just Because
Starting point is 01:28:11 Here's the deal Right Dr. Dre is coming off Of N.W.A Ice Cube goes To New York
Starting point is 01:28:24 He does his album. Bomb Squad. He also does a, like a diss record, like towards. No Vaseline. No Vaseline, right? Dre is in what I would like to call
Starting point is 01:28:35 hip hop purgatory, right? That's like right where you, you're not there, but you're not there. Yeah, yeah. He calls you Snoop. You bring the dog, pal? How does this chronic session start?
Starting point is 01:28:49 Like, how does this, how does... It started, I called Dre one day. I called him, you know, because I hadn't seen him in a while. That's what I used to do. I'd call him, you know, because he'd be at Audio Achievements or wherever.
Starting point is 01:29:00 I'd say, man, can I come hang out? Because that's what I used to do is to get away from the hood. Excuse me, y'all. I had to burp real quick. No problem. And so I had called him, and he was like, I'm up. I'm having a bachelor party for L.A. Dre.
Starting point is 01:29:18 So I was like, shit, can I come? He was like, yeah, come. So I went to the bachelor party And Was in there hanging out There was a lot of bad motherfuckers in there Like strippers and shit Because I wasn't used to all of that shit
Starting point is 01:29:34 Naked women and shit like that So they playing music and shit So I wasn't used to seeing it like that You know what I mean? You still felt green at that time. I was in the hood. We didn't have this shit like that.
Starting point is 01:29:50 And so I asked L.A. Draft, I said, can I play this music? You know, because they kept playing the same shit. So I said, let me play this shit. So he was like, all right. So he popped that shit in. And that was cassettes back then. So he popped that motherfucker in. And he me play this shit. So he was like, all right. So he popped that shit in. And that was cassettes back then. So he popped that motherfucker in. He started playing the shit.
Starting point is 01:30:09 And there was a song we had called Long Beach is a Motherfucker. And he heard the shit. And he was like, damn, that shit banging. He was like, who was this? I said, that's me snooping my homeboy Nate Dogg. So he was like, have you let Dre hear this shit? I was like, no, he didn't shout us down you know a few times here and there at family functions and shit like that so um he was like
Starting point is 01:30:31 Dre listen to this shit so Dre came over there and was bobbing his shit you know he was like yeah he didn't know it on the song okay yeah no okay yeah he didn't know it so he was just like damn who was this he's like I said that's was this? I said, that's 213. I was like, that's me, Snoop, and Nate. He was like, damn, this y'all? I was like, yeah, shit, I've been trying to let you in. And so he was like, look, come up to the studio on Monday. So I said, all right, cool.
Starting point is 01:31:00 And so at that time, you know, Snoop was kind of like doing, we was still-3, but at that time, you know how motherfuckers get in a motherfucker's ear. It was trying to steer him off on his solo mission. Right. It was kind of like splitting us up a little bit. So we was all kind of going at it. And so I get back down to the hood because we was living with my homeboy Rump. Rump and Christine and Keisha and Kim on 20th Street. 20th and Am.
Starting point is 01:31:29 So Snoop wasn't there, so I called him on the phone. I'm like, Snoop, I said, nigga, Dre want us to come to the studio on Monday. And he was like, nigga, fuck that shit, nigga. You guys believe that shit? Boom. So he hanged the phone up on me. Snoop, he'd get nasty with me. He'd hang the shit up on me. Snoop, he get nasty with me.
Starting point is 01:31:45 He hang the shit up, all kind of shit. So I call him back like, nigga, just please, just listen to me. Let me call this nigga on the three-way. And so you could talk to him. So he could tell you himself. So I called. You know, back then you get the doo-doo-doo-doo. And then you call.
Starting point is 01:32:01 And then I said, Andre. I said, Snoop, don't believe. I clicked back over. I said, Andre, Snoop don't believe that you want us to come to the studio on Monday, so Dre was like, this is, this, yeah, he was like, yeah, I want y'all to come to the studio on Monday, he was like, this ain't no Dr. Dre, he said, this is Dr. Dre, no, he said, this is Dre, and when he, the way he said it, it's that voice that you know, when he talking on the records like yeah and so we you know hung up the phone you know we was happy kind of like celebrating and shit like yeah we can do push-ups
Starting point is 01:32:35 what do y'all do like we start drinking silver satin and kool-Aid. That was our drink back then. And then y'all like, we go on Monday. Yeah. Okay. And so Monday came. Monday came. Rump was the only transportation we had, my homeboy Rump, because we was living with them. So he had an old Ford, like kind of raggedy Ford. So we in that motherfucker, we took the street all the way to Hollywood. And you know how you get to the light and you put that motherfucker up in the thing you like and then you hit drive boom and then y'all take off we did that shit all the way to Hollywood the solar record and then and when we got there um you know we walked in Dre was right there DOC was in there. And Dre threw on a beat.
Starting point is 01:33:28 It had the hold on, hold on to that. Involved? Yeah, mixed with payback. The big payback. Damn, I want that beat right now. It was the James Brown. It was hard as fuck. So Snoop did a song to it called This Is A Gangster's Life.
Starting point is 01:33:47 And that was the first record that was recorded with Dre. You know, he was like, this nigga Snoop is hard as fuck. Where the fuck is that record at right now? I don't know. Dre got it on tape. Snoop probably got it. We need to hear that shit. Snoop may have it on tape because he got all of the masks and everything from Death Row.
Starting point is 01:34:03 Instagram. And yeah, Death Snoop owned all that shit. So that's technically the first, even though it wasn't called Chronic at the time. That was the first shit. It wasn't called the Chronic. It was before the Chronic. And so we just kept doing music. We kept working and working and then Dre
Starting point is 01:34:17 was like, look, why don't y'all move up out of Long Beach and come stay with me up here in the Valley. You know, get out the hood because it was a lot of shit going on. You know, motherfuckers was going in and out of the county jail, all kind of shit. All our homeboys was, the lowest number was 15 years.
Starting point is 01:34:33 They was all in jail for 15 and up. You know, so now everybody out pretty much. Everybody is out. Is everybody out? Except for Ant Dog ain't out, huh? Duck Feet. Remember we used to call Ant Duck Feet.
Starting point is 01:34:54 And God damn it. So we moved out. We moved up there with Dre. And that's when it all started. You know, that's when I learned how to do the MPC-60, learn how to splice tape. And me, him, and D.O.C. would just be in the studio just doing music and shit all day and then going back to Solar back and forth. And in the process, that's how we met Corrupt. We was at the Roxy in Hollywood.
Starting point is 01:35:22 And the homegirl Diamond, you know, Snoop had a name. Diamond was the singer, right? No, Diamond rapped. She rapped? Yeah, she rapped. Okay. Yeah, and so Diamond was like, my homeboy Corrupt is hard, nigga, da-da-da-da-da, you know, banging on us. And, you know, Snoop had a name.
Starting point is 01:35:41 So I was like, shit, my nigga, Snoop hard, too. What's that? So Snoop and Corrupt battled? Yeah, battled. like, shit, my nigga, Snoop, Snoop, what's that? So Snoop and Karrueche battled? Yeah, battled. Oh, I've never heard this. Right in front of the motherfucking Roxy. It might be recorded. Somebody might have that shit.
Starting point is 01:35:54 You know, I might have that shit somewhere. I got a check. I'm serious. I got a gang of shit. I got to pull it out. But that nigga Karrueche was so motherfucking hard. Him and Snoop was battling that nigga said you got a pinky ring on your finger and that is true but if you look at mine
Starting point is 01:36:10 i got one too and we was like oh yeah oh shit so we was like oh shit but they were you know snoop he was really back at that right did you know he was he was no he had already been in la okay okay yeah and uh uh And shit, they was battling. They was going back and forth. You know, Snoop was busting. He was busting. So it came to a point where he hard, he hard. So it wasn't no, it wasn't a winner.
Starting point is 01:36:36 It was like they just broke it up. Like, we're going to have to continue this shit. So I went over to Corrupt. I said, look, nigga, let me get your number. Took his number, and I called him him probably about maybe about a week later and i told him i said nigga come up here to the valley i want to do a demo tape on you so i brought him up there did a demo tape on him it was called uh we had a the main record was called What More Can I Say? It may be on YouTube on you know the demo tape may be on YouTube and it was
Starting point is 01:37:10 What more can I say? Oh What more can I say? Oh And then Corrupt just Boom boom boom Boom boom boom It was Bobby.
Starting point is 01:37:27 I think it was Bobby Caldwell. It might have been Bobby Caldwell. I'm not sure, but it was that... That nigga tore that motherfucker up. So I let Dre and Suge in here. Boom. They heard him, and then that's when they signed Corrupt. Corrupt had Broomfield, and then they came over.
Starting point is 01:37:46 That was his big homies from 60. They came over, and they talked to Death Row and made that whole deal happen right there because I did a demo with Corrupt. That's how they discovered him. Let me ask you because I seen an interview with Big U. Big U says that if Big U was home, Corrupt would have never signed to Death Row. Do you think that's? Shit, I don't know, but shit, you know, money talking bullshit
Starting point is 01:38:13 woke. Right, right, right. I mean, he could have got some money if he was in, you know, if he was the main guy with him, you have to get your money. Because at the time. Dripping in blood ain't got nothing to do with the brain. That's actually my question because, see, us from the East Coast, we didn't understand you guys having war, right? That's one. And then us adapting to that life, understanding that that's our culture. But then Death Row was something that was special because when we seen NWA, we seen all blue. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? Then we seen, like, I think there was, like, if I get a blood gang, and it's all blood.
Starting point is 01:38:50 Like, we had never seen bloods and Crips. I think, I believe Death Row was the first. No, but Ruthless had, Booyah was down with Ruthless. Yeah. They were bloods. Well, they was kind of bloods. They were like. Booyah Tribe was bloods and Crips.
Starting point is 01:39:02 And Crips? Oh, yeah. Yeah. See, I didn't know that. They had some that was Crips, because Roscoe was from Booyah Tribe. Hes and Crips. And Crips? Oh, yeah. Yeah. They had some that was Crips because Roscoe was from Booyah Tribe. He's a Crip. I know him from Long Beach. Okay.
Starting point is 01:39:09 All right. And that, I think that. The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration in the United States. Starting point is 01:41:48 do you think these people are good Americans? It's got heists, tragedy, a trial of the century, and the goddamnedest love story you've ever heard. I picked up the phone, and my thought was, this is the most important phone call I'll ever make in my life. I couldn't believe it. I mean, Brendan, it was divine intervention. You can now binge all 10 episodes of Divine Intervention
Starting point is 01:42:12 on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. If he was out there at that time, he would have been able to get a nice check out of it. Right. And still, that probably would have kept a lot more of the balance. Instead of it was like more of these dudes. Right. Like tripping on this side of the red room. It wouldn't have been none of that shit because he would have been he had more you know more control of it you know because he no more because he's a a gangster that that know
Starting point is 01:42:49 the politics because that was more of an la thing right like i'm asking you that what i mean by bloods and crisps long beach is famous for being just yeah it's all crips and i heard you don't see no red out there no i mean you you might you got some i'm sure it's bloods that live in long beach you know what I mean? Under the radar, but motherfuckers ain't tripping like that, huh? Oh, you said no.
Starting point is 01:43:13 No, you don't. Well, shit, Long Beach and Compton is damn near the same city. It's one street that separates Long Beach and Compton, and that's Alondra. But I'm sure under the radar, it's one street that separates Long Beach and Compton, and that's Alondra. Wow. But I'm sure under the radar, it was
Starting point is 01:43:29 some, not banging, but just getting away. Huh? I gave my one or two, but it ain't no gang. Well, it's a Crib City. You know, hey, fuck it. That's my bad. Exactly.
Starting point is 01:43:48 But yeah, I mean, yes, it's a Crip City. I was born in that motherfucker. So that was my next question. As a person that's born and raised in Long Beach, when was the first time did you see that opposite color? Shit. Did you have to go to LA? My mama moved me to Compton with my dad
Starting point is 01:44:08 in Kelly Park. I came up there. I was from Long Beach. My mom was saying that I was going in the wrong direction. She witnessed an incident. One of my OG homeboys, Big Kool-Aid, came and scooped me up on the bike and took me down the street.
Starting point is 01:44:31 And he told me, he said, as soon as I pull up in the driveway, there's going to be a motherfucker sitting on the porch. He said, get off and handle your business. So we pull up in there, motherfucker. I jump off the handlebars. I commence to whoop. Whoop, whoop, whoop, whoop, whoop. And I knew the nigga, but I couldn't go. I had to.
Starting point is 01:44:50 He was going to get in my ass. So I had to get off the nigga. Yeah, I had to. And after that, she witnessed that shit. And that's when she was like, you got to go move with your daddy. And sent me to Compton. And as soon as I got up to Compton, shit, Andre and Tyree. So you're telling me at that point, Compton was a better place than Long Beach?
Starting point is 01:45:11 Yeah, as far as my mama's saying it, yeah. Yeah. But I was still catching the bus back down to Long Beach. But when I got there, Andre and Tyree, you know, they had me out. You know, I was a young kid. You're saying Andre. We're talking about Drake. Yeah, Drake.
Starting point is 01:45:31 Yeah. So we was. We don't got the ability. We was in a. We used to have Battle of the Blocks. And I used to battle all the dudes my age in the boxing gloves. Starting point is 01:45:51 We all used to box each other. And when I first met them, you know, we wasn't, like, tight. And so Andre and Tyree started calling me Kibbles. They called me Kibbles and Bits. Kibbles and Bits? Like the dog food? Yeah, they was like Kibbles. They called me kibbles and bits. Kibbles and bits? Like the dog food? Yeah, they was like kibbles and bits. When I used to go out there to the box and say,
Starting point is 01:46:09 get him, kibbles! And that's how I'd go out there and try to, boo-boo-boo-boo, try to squab, but it was my homeboy Stank. That was like, that was the lockup of the century, me and him. We was locking up. Stank was passing the motherfucker. I ain't gonna lie, that nigga was tagging me. I ain't gonna lie That nigga was tagging me I ain't gonna lie

Starting point is 02:07:25 I see. He got credit for it? Yeah. Okay. I don't know the credit. Hey. I don't mean to fuck it up. No, it's all good. That's what we did with each other. I didn't done a gang of shit for them.
Starting point is 02:07:41 I didn't say like, It was synergy. Everybody would do anything. That didn't say like, nigga, I didn't. It was synergy. Everybody was working. Yeah, everybody would do anything. That's just, like I said, like with the chronic. It felt like that. Like, y'all were just working. That's it.
Starting point is 02:07:54 And the business was later. Yeah, no, we didn't even do the business. The business was fucked up. No, we never did the business on none of that shit. So whoever, somebody did this for that person, that's for you. It was totally creative. It was all creative. Yeah, that's for you.
Starting point is 02:08:09 That's for your shit. That's for your shit. That's for your shit. We didn't come back saying, I wrote this shit and did that. No, that's yours. That's yours. That's yours. Right.
Starting point is 02:08:17 But other than that shit, I did my shit. I ain't, you know, I've had people help out on certain things. You know, everybody get help. You know, when we was in there doing the chronic in different songs, it was a lot of help. You know, even like when Mr. Grimm is rapping on Endo Smoke, on the H&R Puff, the stuff in your lungs, smoking on the chronic, getting straight sprung.
Starting point is 02:08:38 You know, that's my style. But go ahead. I helped with that, with helping him write that part. You know what I mean? So it's just input in here and there, but that's just how we work. It wasn't no, nigga, I want this, I want that, and I take that.
Starting point is 02:08:55 Snoop will tell you. He done a gang of shit for a gang of motherfuckers and ain't charged them nothing, ain't asked them nothing. Same with me. I done done shit like, you gotta get yours, I gotta get mine. I ain't charged them nothing, ain't asked them nothing. Same with me. I done done shit like, you gotta get yours, I gotta get mine. I don't, I ain't seen not one check from that. Really? Not one check from that.
Starting point is 02:09:13 I ain't seen no money from EndoSmoke. And that went gold. I wasn't on my shit back then. You know, I've been, I could go after them now. You should see the royalty check that they sent me from Sony. That shit be 35 cents.
Starting point is 02:09:29 How the fuck is it 35 cents? I got a 12 cent check the other day. This motherfucker went gold. And you know by now the motherfucker is beyond gold. Now that shit probably so many different platinums that you can't even name it.
Starting point is 02:09:41 It should take me more gas to put it in the bank. You know what I mean? So how the fuck Is y'all gonna But it's my It's my fault Cause I ain't had

Starting point is 02:10:29 For Dre. For Dre. Right. Things Just Ain't the Same. We got to clear it up because people don't know what we're talking about. Oh, shit. I thought Jay-Z wrote that. Nah, nah.
Starting point is 02:10:38 M. No, Eminem wrote that. Eminem wrote that? Jay-Z wrote. Still Dre. Still Dre. Yeah, yeah. He wrote Still Dre.

Starting point is 02:12:19 A lot of times the big economic forces we hear about on the news show up in our lives in small ways. Three or four days a week, I would buy two cups of banana pudding. But the price has gone up, so now I only buy one. The demand curve in action. And that's just one of the things we'll be covering on Everybody's Business from Bloomberg Businessweek. I'm Max Chavkin. And I'm Stacey Vanek-Smith.
Starting point is 02:12:43 Every Friday, we will be diving into the biggest stories in business, taking a look at what's going on, why it matters, and how it shows up in our everyday lives. But guests like Businessweek editor Brad Stone, sports reporter Randall Williams, and consumer spending expert Amanda Mull will take you inside the boardrooms, the backrooms, even the signal chats that make our economy tick. Starting point is 02:13:15 or wherever you get your podcasts. My name is Brendan Patrick Hughes, host of Divine Intervention. This is a story about radical nuns in combat boots and wild-haired priests trading blows with J. Edgar Hoover in a hell-bent effort to sabotage a war. J. Edgar Hoover was furious. Somebody violated the FBI, and he wanted to bring the Catholic left to its knees. The FBI went around to all their neighbors and said to them, do you think these people are good Americans? It's got heists, tragedy, a trial of the century, and the goddamnedest love story you've ever heard. I picked up the phone and my thought was,
Starting point is 02:13:55 this is the most important phone call I'll ever make in my life. I couldn't believe it. I mean, Brendan, it was divine intervention. You can now binge all 10 episodes of Divine Intervention on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. It's different. You know what I mean? Like you say, he's a student. Game was student of the game, too.
Starting point is 02:14:23 It's just him and him. You're right, he is. I promise you, that motherfucker wrote that shit like he was inside a Dre body in his head. That is alien shit. And that shit was so motherfucking hard. I was like, God damn. So when you asked me that, I had to give it to him on that one because that shit was dope. Game is dope, too.

But what he say, it's time for the payback.
Starting point is 02:15:59 What he say, something like that? No, no, you know, look, don't get me wrong. Melly Mell is my nigga. I love Melly Mell. That's an OG everything. But he should have did it over a different type of music and made it more simple to where
Starting point is 02:16:15 okay, now we got something going here. Now, okay, it could be another one, another part two. Because it's all fun and games. You're saying he did it so old school, like it's only like the old school. Yeah, he went super old school like it's only like the old yeah he went super old school with it he went super old school when he should have just came up come up to this era and get down on this type of shit that shit might open up a whole nother motherfucking lane for you with these young niggas all right you know what i mean you do some bust over they shit he should have rhymed some trail shit some drill shit? Some drill shit? No, not rhyming.
Starting point is 02:16:45 No, not rhyming. Drill shit. Just rhyming like he rhymes. The nigga did the message. That shit. He know how to write. So you take your time with it and be simple with it
Starting point is 02:16:56 and just break that shit down. But, you know, Melly Mel is my nigga. But that, he probably should have, I ain't, you that, he probably should have, you know, he probably should have had a different beat more up to era
Starting point is 02:17:11 to where, you know, it'll gravitate the young crowd to come in and listen at the same time. You know, because... So Belly Mel would have hit you and said, I need a beat to this Eminem on. Would you give him? Are you answering the text? I couldn't get in it.
Starting point is 02:17:28 Okay. I couldn't get in there. I couldn't get in there. I wasn't getting nobody mixed. You know what I'm saying? But that's just how I am. I wasn't getting nobody mixed. Because I love both of them.
Starting point is 02:17:39 Right. You know, just as far as hip hop, you know, that's what I mean as far as musically. I think he could have musically came a little better. You know, and it's, you know, hey, but he ain't no buster, though. He came, he struck right back. He came right back to that shit. Shit. And he's strong as a motherfucker.

Yeah, he still had the suit. And he made everybody say, dude, this way, this way. And then he told those two, that was the coldest shit I've ever seen in a motherfucking concert. Starting point is 02:26:32 Getting there Pharrell Or Kanye West Man Shit I'm at the road with Kanye. Okay. I love Pharrell.
Starting point is 02:26:49 I love Pharrell. He's dope. I heard he wanted to work with me back in the day, but nobody never contacted me to tell me that. But Kanye, I grounded. We was before anything just to see the progress that he made from being in this little-ass studio with a thousand fucking, like hundreds of thousands of records all the way up and down the stairs and it being cold as fucking Chicago when I went to go see him.
Starting point is 02:27:20 And then just to see the things that he did and the production, his production, it reminds me of myself. You know, I be telling these motherfuckers, I was the Drake of the 90s. You know, all the ladies, look. I ain't gonna lie. You know, I ain't, you know, all the ladies.
Starting point is 02:27:39 I was L.L. Warren. Oh, yeah, L.L. Warren, man, back in the 90s. I got the next one. Yeah, yeah. L.L. Warren, man. Back in the 90s. I got the next one. Yeah, please. This is a good one, man. George Clinton or Blowfly? Oh, my God.
Starting point is 02:27:56 Both. Both, right? Oh, my God. Blowfly. Y'all should have been hard on me. Blowfly's the hardest. I'm going to have to roll with both. Wait, wait.
Starting point is 02:28:04 Let me wait a minute now. Wait a minute. Think about it. Who do you sample more? I got to roll with George Clinton. Exactly. Yeah, I had to roll with George Clinton. Why did I still drink? I don't know. Just used to it.
Starting point is 02:28:19 Illmatic or ready to die? God damn. Well, y'all show is cold. Who did you really listen to i just want to i want to dig in i listen to both of them um if i had to do it like that, I'd listen to Illmatic more because that was out way before that. But I'm going to go with both because they was both dope records. Okay.
Starting point is 02:28:50 I ain't mad. Yeah. And I still got Drake. And I still got the blue Nas hoodie with the orange Nas on the way from way back in the day. Because believe it or not, Def Jam was with Sony. Yeah. And before Polygram.
Starting point is 02:29:04 So me and Nas used to fly on the plane together. People don't know how the labels were all connected by these conglomerates. And Nas was on Sony, so we were both Sony artists, so they had us flying together. Me and Nas, fly to LA, back to New York, back to LA. So we was flying together.
Starting point is 02:29:22 You and Nas, a record would be crazy. That's another guy I would love to give it. A crazy record. You know what? A lot of these artists, they don't really understand that there's somebody that say, send me some beats. But the way I am is, you know, if you want to get the best out of it, yeah, let's sit in that motherfucker. You're going to produce them. Like we're doing right now.
Starting point is 02:29:44 We're talking, we're vibing. Let's sit in that motherfucker you're gonna produce them like we doing right now we talking we vibing let's sit in that motherfucker and understand each other and that's when the best we couldn't do the same interview on Zoom
Starting point is 02:29:50 yes indeed that's when the best yeah the best is gonna come out I'm sorry to change the subject but I say that's the reason
Starting point is 02:29:57 why the music for the 90s was so good is because back then I couldn't sit you had to be I had to go to
Starting point is 02:30:02 your studio you had to come to my studio we had to sit down we had to be in the studio. I had to go to your studio. You had to come to my studio. We had to sit down. We had to make music together. And now it's just trash music. I mean, not trash music. Let me not call it trash.
Starting point is 02:30:12 It's disposable music because all I'm doing is trying to get your feeling and then I'm trying to match my verse with your thing as opposed to when you were sitting there. When you made the hook, I was there.
Starting point is 02:30:23 You know what I mean? When you made the beat, I was there know what I mean when you made the beat I was there I think you would be I would love to get down with him you know what I did that a lot of people remember the
Starting point is 02:30:33 pick it up pick it up the remix boom boom boom boom boom boom I did that remember the Slick Rick
Starting point is 02:30:43 behind bars he was pissed off Slick Rick Behind bars He was pissed off Slick Rick didn't like it But Russell and him Had to tell him like Nigga don't worry about it The shit is dope That dumb diddy
Starting point is 02:30:53 Dumb diddy diddy Daddy day This type of shit Happens every day Yep Produced that shit For Slick Rick And that shit went gold
Starting point is 02:31:00 He understood it After that I remember The shit was dope You know Slick Rick is dope as fuck But he just didn't understand because he was like, oh, you can't mix this with that in the show. Right. And gave that nigga a go.
Starting point is 02:31:14 Side note, side note. You saw the Biz Markie documentary? No, I didn't see it. It came out. Sasha Jenkins did it. I didn't know it came out. I seen the trailer for it. So Biz Markie used to go out and do la-di-da-di and did it I didn't know it came out I seen the trailer for it So Bismarck He used to go out
Starting point is 02:31:25 And do la-di-da-di And say it was him Get the fuck out It was his It was his rhymes Get out of here Wow He would go perform it
Starting point is 02:31:32 La-di-da-di-da-di And people thought It was his shit Oh okay Yeah Alright Yes indeed Okay so
Starting point is 02:31:41 Kendrick Lamar or J. Cole Woo Uh That's Ew Shit Uh Yes, indeed. Okay, so Kendrick Lamar or J. Cole? Woo. That's, ew. Shit. Because J. Cole is like your cousin. J. Cole is. J. Cole is. West Coast.
Starting point is 02:31:54 Yeah, I'm going to have to roll with both. Okay, okay. And I think they're the best that we have right now in hip hop. To be honest with you. You know what tripped me out is J. Cole. It's on a video, probably on YouTube somewhere. I've seen his shit. And when we was recently in Raleigh, I was trying to reach out to try to get him to come to the show
Starting point is 02:32:16 because he said that my album, he mentioned Tupac. He was like Warren G., Tupac, and some other records. He said, those were the albums that inspired me to do what I do, rapping. So I wanted him to come see the show live. Come see me do this shit. Look at the shit that you did. That's right, J. Cole. Come out, J. Cole.
Starting point is 02:32:38 Connect with Warren G. That's right. He's dropping this next week. He's going to see it. Rap City or MTV Raps? Oof. Oh, wait. Rap City or MTV Raps? Oh wait Rap City
Starting point is 02:32:47 I got the next one Love my dog man OG's right here King T or MCA? Shit Shit I'm out Oh wait
Starting point is 02:33:00 Damn I got the road with King T Cause King T was He's the original King T I got to roll with King T because King T was. He's the original. King T was right there with Ice T. They had like a little thing kind of, not no serious beef or nothing, but it was like the battle over the T. Nope.
Starting point is 02:33:17 Who was the T? Really? That was the T beef? Yeah. It was like King T and Ice T. Like, who was the, who was the, who was the. It was the T. King T was hard too now Ice T. Like, who was the... Who was the T? King T was hard too now.

Starting point is 02:35:29 that shit is, that's like the greatest of all time as far as hip hop production from Dre in hip hop period, the way it was structured, because it was a movie. He took you on a journey and made it a movie.
Starting point is 02:35:43 Including the stigas. That's what I mean. He was talking about that earlier. It was a movie. It's acted out and then it's brought into a movie. He took you on a journey and made it a movie. Including the skits. That's what I mean. You were talking about that earlier. It was a movie. It's acted out and then it's brought into a song. I always thought. It brought you to Compton. Yes, indeed.
Starting point is 02:35:52 I always thought all classic hip-hop skits should always wind up as a movie. Yes, indeed. I always thought that. Yes, indeed. I'm sorry to jump off subject. All right, let's go to the next one. Wait, I got it.
Starting point is 02:36:00 You, yeah. Exhibit or Razz Kaz? Exhibit. Yeah. I like this one.azz Kaz? Exhibit. Yeah. I like this one. Mack 10 or WC? WC. Let's go.

Starting point is 02:36:29 I mean I gotta go with both Pimp C Pimp C was my nigga Look I'ma tell y'all Some cold shit I'ma tell y'all
Starting point is 02:36:44 Some cold shit He came When he to tell you all some cold shit. He came, when he came. Talk about Pimp C. Pimp C got out of jail. He came to California. He came to my studio. I had a studio in Lake Forest, California. He came to my studio.
Starting point is 02:36:57 We sat in that motherfucker and talked and just thinking, you know, about things we was getting ready to do musically. So he just wanted to see me, you know, so we was in that motherfucker just chopping it up. He was telling me about when he was in a riot in jail where he said, nigga, I had on nothing but my boxers, nigga. And he said, I put on oil all over my body, said, nigga, I had to put my boots on, nigga, ready to go. You know, out in the riot. The fight boots on, nigga, ready to go. You know, out there in the ride.
Starting point is 02:37:26 The fight. Yeah, getting ready to go down. And he came back again, and he called me when the shit happened with him. I still got the voice message. That's how deep this is. I still got the voice message where he called me. He said, Warren, he said, I don't know what you're doing tonight, but I'm at the La Madrean Hotel.
Starting point is 02:37:50 I'm getting ready to get down. We're too short tonight. He said, if you got a Digio 2 or whatever, he said, I forgot what else he said. He said, but it's on the voicemail. He said, whatever. He said, I'm at the hotel. He said, come to the hotel. He said, after I get down with Short, we can work on some music. He said, it's going down.
Starting point is 02:38:17 That's the last. That's the last. Just like him. Just like him. No, they were back. And then he called. You know, that was the last voice message that I got from him. And then, actually, it was two of them. Then he called, you know, that was the last voice message that I got from him. And then, actually it was two of them, then he called me again. And he left a voice message because he was trying to get in contact with Snoop because he wanted to drop him a jacket off. Oh, wow. And that Monday is when all, that's all this shit, the news broke about him passing away. And that shit crushed me.
Starting point is 02:38:44 God bless. Rest in peace Pimp C. That was my guy. Pimp C, 3-2, Big Mike all them was my guys. Analog or digital?
Starting point is 02:39:00 Analog. DOC or MC Breed? Shit. DOC or MC Breed? Hmm. Shit. DOC. MPC 60 or MPC 2000? 2000. Shit.
Starting point is 02:39:18 I'm going to have to go with MPC 2000. Okay. Even though I still got the MPC 60 that was used on the Chronic, I still got it. Right. Same one Dre taught me on. Wow. The Farsight or Digital Underground? Shit.
Starting point is 02:39:36 Digital Underground. Really? Yeah. Go ahead. Next one too. Above the Law or Compton Suspended? Shit. Next. Above the Law or Compton's Most Wanted? Shit. I'm going to go with both on that one. Damn.
Starting point is 02:39:55 Hold up, dawg. Let me get my drink. Go ahead. You got a drink, too? I got it right here. Yes, indeed. Actually, I'm going to tell you a cold story. This is going to fuck everybody up.
Starting point is 02:40:10 Okay. I was introduced to G-Funk through a bud of law. You know, they was the first ones. They were G. They was claiming G-Funk. That was the... For you. Look, check this out.
Starting point is 02:40:27 Wow. I used to be around, like I said, as a pup, hanging around the studio, out in the street, nowhere to go. Lay Law 187 took me in with them. Above the law. Above the law. Right. K-Mac, KMG, K- law. Came at KMG, go back to KMG, total chaos. They took me in with them, and we moved in with them.
Starting point is 02:40:55 They started fucking with me just because they seen I was a young motherfucker just eager to learn. So I lived with them. I didn't really have no place to stay. So I lived with them, and they was G-Funk. So they made me G-Funk from him, because like I said,
Starting point is 02:41:16 187 taught me how to work the MPC-62, along with what Dre taught me as well. So they were G-Funk, so I became part of that. You know what I mean? They were already repping G-Funk. Straight up, repping it. So I carried on G-Funk no matter what, because that's what, I ain't going to say it was like a gang,
Starting point is 02:41:39 but it was like, you know, this is the G-Funk music, like the click. This is your crew. Like G-Funk, what we do is G-Funk music, like the click. This is your crew. Like G-Funk. What we do is G-Funk. So what I did was I still kept going with the name, moving with it. What I did is I took it and I made it worldwide to a whole other genre where they saying it's a genre of music now.
Starting point is 02:42:01 But the G-funk era is my my my branch my part of the g-funk but the niggas who turned me on the g-funk was above the law wow so when you hear that you know and i'm glad y'all know that yeah yeah yeah yes indeed you know i'm i'm i'm g-funk i-Funk. Regulate the G-Funk era. That's one. You know, that's another branch off of the whole G-Funk brand name. And I took it and took it to a whole different realm. And to where now you go anywhere and they like G-Funk, you know, G-Funk, G-Funk, G-Funk, you know.
Starting point is 02:42:45 And I just had to say that just to let them know, you know, let them know because motherfuckers be, you know, sometimes they like, whoa, whoa, they the ones that did G-Funk. But motherfucker, you don't know. I was around these motherfuckers at the beginning stages, nigga, and they made me a part of that shit. So that's what the fuck it is, and I took it to a whole other motherfucking era. I made it worldwide and made it known so everybody know what G-Funk is now, you know? Goddamn.
Starting point is 02:43:16 Goddamn. Yeah. Do the next one, then we'll do the last one. Was I spazzing a little? No, no, you're good. No, no, no. Maybe y'all know Drink Champs wants to give flowers while people are here to receive them

This is a story about radical nuns in combat boots and wild-haired priests trading blows with J. Edgar Hoover in a hell-bent effort to sabotage a war.
Starting point is 02:47:11 J. I picked up the phone and my thought was, this is the most important phone call I'll ever make in my life. I couldn't believe it. I mean, Brendan, it was divine intervention. You can now binge all 10 episodes of Divine Intervention on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

You don't have to, you know, you got to stay down with the people who was down with you and never, you know, never transform on them. And, you know, like I said, the people that's been down with you from the gate, you can't be disloyal to, you know, like Snoop. I think this nigga got over 30. Starting point is 03:02:21 Coming all Three different journeys Coming together And And And creating some shit That would be crazy up coming all together coming all the three different journeys coming together and creating some shit that was like that changed a lot in the music industry as far as
Starting point is 03:02:33 a new sound and we was inspired as well by 415 which was Richie Rich and D-Lo and the jig and I can't pronounce it by 415, which was Richie Rich and D-Lo. And the jig and the, I can't pronounce it all the way, but Richie Rich, he probably like,
Starting point is 03:02:50 nigga, you trippin' out. So the Bay Area. Yeah, the Bay Area, 415 inspired us to, that's why we was called 213. Wow. Yeah, because of the Bay Area, huh? That's big. Yes, indeed, yeah. And that was Richie Rich and D-Lo and the Gov and the Jig.
Starting point is 03:03:07 I still can't pronounce it. But those were my guys. Yes, indeed. Now, let me ask you because during these times that we were going through, big thing was like the defund the police, right? Uh-huh. And now they announced in L.A. that like actually stealing. Yeah. big thing was like to defund the police, right? Uh-huh. And now, they announced in L.A.
Starting point is 03:03:28 that like actually stealing Yeah. is not a crime. I don't want to say they're saying it's not a crime, but they're saying it's like the police won't even react. Yeah, that shit is crazy as a motherfucker.
Starting point is 03:03:40 I don't understand what this is for. But, I think that It's making us look fucked up You know like We out of control Like they always thought
Starting point is 03:03:54 You know And potentially I think somebody going to get killed Doing that shit And I see people riot riding in the mall. They're just running out. When I look, it's always in
Starting point is 03:04:11 California area. It's just California. Yeah, wow. It's like it's a... I mean, I really don't understand it, but somebody going... What's going to happen is the owners of those stores, they're going to start striking back. And they're going to start shooting these motherfuckers.
Starting point is 03:04:33 I'm telling you, I see this shit. And it's like, why would you guys leave open season like that for these kids to do this, you know. And at the same time, some of them motherfucking parents, like in my era, because those are, that's our offsprings out there doing, you know, doing this shit. These parents got to step up, step back up again
Starting point is 03:04:56 and start instilling motherfucking morals into these families because this shit is getting out of control. And it's like, it's like, what is it's like what's the future of these motherfuckers? What's going on in Cali right now? Somebody got to get this shit under control.
Starting point is 03:05:14 You know, we got to get a leader again. We don't have leaders like we had back in the day. We got to get leaders out leaders again. I'll be checking out the dude, Dr. Umar. He's a good
Starting point is 03:05:30 guy. Him, Dr. Umar, Farrakhan, guys like that. We don't have that type of stuff no more. We have Martin Luther King and all of the Dick Griffey. We had a bunch of people that could speak for us.
Starting point is 03:05:46 We don't have a whole bunch of people, like a whole bunch of people, like back then, we only got a few people that could speak, and then it's hard to get these teenagers to understand and to get America to understand that we're not trying to turn them against you. We're trying to make, we're trying to get our people right
Starting point is 03:06:04 and get ourselves together. against you, we're trying to make, we're trying to get our people right and get ourselves together. We're not trying to bash all you motherfuckers and this and that and this. Look at this shit these motherfuckers is running out of stores. So of course I'ma preach out here to all the youth to try to change they shit
Starting point is 03:06:18 so they don't be locked up in the system. A jail system to where it's big time billionaires and shit making money. You know what I mean? That's where all of the kids is going to go if their parents don't get this shit together or we need to get with California and get out of whoever's control
Starting point is 03:06:36 to get that shit. They fixed that shit. Because it's the whole state of California because I read this morning that there's a federal building in San Francisco and they closed down. Serious. They closed down because there's too much drug sales.
Starting point is 03:06:51 A federal. Yeah. Too much drug sales. They said that San Francisco, that's how crazy the crime is. They shut down a federal building because people, they had the limit
Starting point is 03:07:02 where it's like selling crack is not a federal offense. Yeah, I got a whole bunch of families. Just think about it. Nah, it's worthwhile. It's got to be the amount that you have to have for it to be federal. So selling crack in front of a federal building is not a federal offense. That's crazy.
Starting point is 03:07:19 They told the people to stay home. I read this shit this morning. This morning. That's they saying that's how crazy. And it's almost like California's leading the way of this like anarchy. No, it is.
Starting point is 03:07:32 This shit is crazy. It's about the laws of California, not the people. No, no, no, no. You're right, right. A hundred percent. You know, but see, now the people got to step up,
Starting point is 03:07:42 you know, and get back at the California. They're like, look, hold up. you know, and get back at the California. They're like, look, hold up. You know, let's get some kind of structure here. Because we look like some goddamn animals right now. That shit look bad as fuck. Arnold had it better than this. Who the governor now?
Starting point is 03:07:55 I don't. Arnold Schwarzenegger? Arnold Schwarzenegger wasn't that bad of a governor. Arnold Schwarzenegger wasn't that bad if you think about it. He wasn't that bad. He wasn't that bad. I mean, the thing that he did, though, was he should have stopped Tookie from getting executed. That was crazy. Why the fuck would you? Why would you okay that?
Starting point is 03:08:13 Right. It's crazy. When this dude has got kid books, he doing shit for the youth, like teaching them shit, you know, because he wouldn't, you know, debrief or whatever. Fuck all that shit. Look past all that shit. This motherfucker doing something positive, but he pushed a button on him, you know? I don't really get into all of that political stuff,
Starting point is 03:08:36 but at the same time, we got to get some morals back jumping in these households because this shit is crazy. My kids, they think I'm mean because anything that they do, I be on their ass about it. I'm Warren G, but I'm a dad at the same time,
Starting point is 03:08:54 and I got to be on their ass. It's like, you guys going to have to understand there's morals here. These are the things that I had to go through, so I'm teaching you guys this stuff so y'all don't be lost. You know, and know how to move, and then know how to have a family. I had to go through. So I'm teaching you guys this stuff so y'all don't be lost. Right. You know, and know how to move.
Starting point is 03:09:07 And then you know how to have, you know, know how to have a family, know how to teach your kids shit. Not having them all over the Internet cussing and shit like that, going viral. Fuck all that shit. That shit is stupid. It's making us as a people look stupid. Right. Hey, motherfuckers might be like, yeah, whatever. But, hey, don't get me wrong,
Starting point is 03:09:25 I have fun too. That shit is out of control. All the stupid shit, all the stupid shit out there, like, just little-ass kids cussing and shit. Bitch, fuck you! In the classroom. In the classroom, I think I said, fuck you, bitch! I said, oh, shit!
Starting point is 03:09:42 I said, little... By the way, he said it better than I was saying. I said, holy shit, this nigga got practice. This little nigga been practicing that trick. Yeah, I think you know how his ass will still have motherfucking whelps on it. I'll tear his ass up. Like, nigga, you ain't
Starting point is 03:09:57 never getting ready to do no shit like that again. Because that's how we used to get it. You know, we got it in my beat. It's probably brutal. People say it was brutal, but we used to get the. You know, we got it, it might be, it's probably brutal. People say it was brutal but we used to get the extension cord. I think it was right.
Starting point is 03:10:09 That was no joke. We need to start using PlayStation cards. Man. All right. All right. No, not the cord. Chancleta, chancleta.
Starting point is 03:10:18 Get the chancleta out. But hold on, let me ask you. What do you like more, performing the record or making the record? Oh, shit. Want to take a shot?
Starting point is 03:10:30 Yeah, you got damn right, bro. You're taking a shot. Hold on, hold on. I got you. I'm with you, dog. Yes, indeed. Both. You know what's still about your music is whether you you a gangbanger or not.
Starting point is 03:10:46 I don't gangbang. I know, but you still make that music that make motherfuckers want to do that. That West Coast. I don't know if this is a gangbang dance, but you know what I'm talking about, that dance that y'all be doing. And it's like, anytime I listen to it, I'll be like that.
Starting point is 03:11:01 I just move up. Let's see that. Let's see that. Let's see that. Oh! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!
Starting point is 03:11:12 Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!
Starting point is 03:11:13 Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!
Starting point is 03:11:14 Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!
Starting point is 03:11:14 Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!
Starting point is 03:11:14 Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!
Starting point is 03:11:14 Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!
Starting point is 03:11:15 Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!
Starting point is 03:11:15 Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!
Starting point is 03:11:19 Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!
Starting point is 03:11:20 Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!
Starting point is 03:11:20 Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!
Starting point is 03:11:21 Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! That's the gangster boogie. Okay. That's the gangster boogie. Gangster boogie. And then when you, you know, that's the gangster boogie. And then, you know, then you got the one where you at the party with the girl you do.
Starting point is 03:11:33 You know, you do all that shit. That's a two-step. That's a two-step. We all know that one. We all know that one. Gangster boogie. And the fun thing a motherfucker used to do was palm their ass. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 03:11:50 Your head on the shoulder doing this shit like, damn. I remember me being from the East Coast and me just looking at a menace aside, a boy in the hood. And me seeing y'all barbecuing and having the guns on your head yeah like i was like damn and i was like yo in new york every year the worst time is the summertime it's the best time it's the worst time as far as violence yeah and then me realizing y'all on summer all year. Yep, yeah. All year. All year. Y'all like, all year. So I was like, I started to realize.
Starting point is 03:12:29 The weather. I started to realize, like, I used to always think it was black people. But then when I realized, it's like the hood. Like any hood. They get crazy during the summer. Is it always like that? It's a national thing, too. But like you said, it's like summertime year-round in California because it get cold now.
Starting point is 03:12:48 Don't get me wrong. It get cold. At night. Yeah, but that next day, it's like, shit, you got 80 degrees, 75, 80 degrees, and it's like motherfuckers pulling their top back. It seemed like, like you said, every time when summer comes, that's when the violence and shit start. And it's just, I really don't understand
Starting point is 03:13:11 that shit. Like, I'm just going to be real. I'm like, damn, every time, before the holidays and before summer start is when all the shit start.
Starting point is 03:13:21 You know, it's like, damn, this is some crazy shit. Boosie said that he feels Los Angeles in particular is the most dangerous place for a rapper. Yeah. You agree with that?
Starting point is 03:13:35 Yeah, I do. Okay, wow. Yeah, I do. You remember back in the days, you used to go to a neighborhood and you was a rapper, they would praise you. Yeah. The police wouldn't even pull you was a rapper. They would praise you. Yeah.
Starting point is 03:13:45 The police wouldn't even pull you over. No, they still do that. Oh, shit. It depends on who you are. It depends on, you know. Where you are. If you, like, if you're one of these motherfuckers out there, you know, steadily thugging and da-da-da-da-da. They're going to test your nuts.
Starting point is 03:14:03 But if you're just a motherfucker just doing your shit, telling your story, that nigga dope. You know, you could do whatever you want to do in L.A. and have a great time. I look at Nipsey, and I don't look at Nipsey,
Starting point is 03:14:14 I don't know his life story. Rest in peace, Nip. But I didn't look at Nip as if Nip was still a part of life. I know he was going back to that. But it was like, damn if you do, damn if you don't.
Starting point is 03:14:27 That was like a devastating blow. Mega. Yeah. You know, because he was, I say, like Tupac said, the last of a dying breed.
Starting point is 03:14:41 You know what I mean? Because he was, he was bringing that shit that he was doing in the new era like we was doing when we wanted everybody to know who we was and what we was about and telling our story.
Starting point is 03:14:56 So he was the last of a dying breed. You know, you ain't heard nobody else that was giving it, putting it out there like that, pushing it like that. Right. As far as new artists, these motherfuckers now, they on Percocets and syrup and guns and shit like this. What the fuck is all this shit?
Starting point is 03:15:18 Right. But, I mean, don't get me wrong. I ain't hating on the young era. I like a lot of the young shit. I listen to that shit. You know, as a producer, you have to keep your ear to the street. But it's just, a lot of that shit, it ain't no structure. You know, his shit was structured.
Starting point is 03:15:38 You know, it was structured, and he was giving you game along with a movie, along with having fun at the same time, and to party all in one, just like we did. Same shit. He brought that element to the new era, to the young, the young age. Yeah, he did. You know, and that was a big blow.
Starting point is 03:15:55 And one thing I noticed about me, like, you know, obviously I'm a New Yorker, and, you know, when I go to L.A., I go to certain people's shows. Don't worry, this shit is all the same, man. When I went to Nipsey, when I went to N.A., I go to certain people's shows. Nori, this shit is all the same, man. When I went to Nipsey, I'm being honest with you. When I went to a Nipsey show, that was the first time I had seen Mexicans come out. Because for a long time.
Starting point is 03:16:16 You had to go to an R&G show. Yeah, yeah. My bad. My Mexicans loved me there. I'm the king in L.A. Come on, man. Yeah, but you know what I'm trying to say? What I'm trying to say is it will always be one-sided.
Starting point is 03:16:28 If I was to go see a Mac-10 show, I expect to see people from a certain part, a certain look, a certain, you know what I mean? Now, the Mexicans support everything, bro. They love it. Hold on, hold on. That's my biggest thing. I'm an outsider looking in. I'm talking about outside. In Atlanta.
Starting point is 03:16:40 That's the first time I saw it, where I saw every gang. It wasn't Crips. It wasn't just Bloods It wasn't It was the The Booyah Tribe I seen When I went to a Nipsey show
Starting point is 03:16:51 Like I snuck in there And I was like Holy shit This is The whole LA was there You're going to get that With every artist Out in LA
Starting point is 03:16:59 That's just how How it is in LA You know Every race support That hip hop culture To the max And you get that I'm telling you No matter who it is in LA. Every race support that hip-hop culture to the max. You get that, I'm telling you, no matter who it is, you're going to get that in LA. I love
Starting point is 03:17:12 my Mexican family out in LA. I got nieces and nephews that's Mexican and black. People be trying to separate this, that, all that politics shit, the jail shit, all that shit.
Starting point is 03:17:28 Fuck all of that. We the same motherfuckers. We all going through the same shit. What is all this over here, politics?
Starting point is 03:17:37 I don't like it. I don't get into that shit. Like I said, I got nieces and nephews that are black and Mexican. Family. I'm bored of being black. You know what I mean? I got nieces and nephews that are black and Mexican. Family. I'm Puerto Rican and black. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 03:17:45 Come on. Come on. I'm Cuban and Cuban. I love all my folks in L.A. as well as New York. I love New York. When I came out just to see so many different Dominicans and Puerto Ricans and Cubans and African people from Africa. Haitians. Haitians. Everybody from Africa. Haitians. Haitians.
Starting point is 03:18:06 Everybody. Look at Haitians. No, I'm serious. All of that just was like, that was. Bro, that is hip hop. That was hip hop. I love New York. I fell in love.
Starting point is 03:18:19 Like, this is really nice. And going to the lounges. I used to like going to the lounges Chris Lighty kind of turned me on to that Chris Lighty My boy Derek L.A. Now was you signed to Violator? I was signed to Violator
Starting point is 03:18:33 Signed to Violator R.A.L. Records or management? Violator R.A.L. Violator Okay, wow Wow
Starting point is 03:18:40 I was with Chris Lighty That was my guy Chris was my guy. He was riding with me ups and downs, bailing me out of jail, all kind of shit. When he first came out to see me perform, I went to jail. Right in front of the
Starting point is 03:18:55 Grand Slam. I think one of the twins was with me too. We both went to jail. Motherfuckers tripping in front of the club with one of my other homeboys. Being a hothead, I run to the trunk, hop that motherfucker open, reaching once again. You was a gun-torn motherfucker, man. That's just how you had to live back then.
Starting point is 03:19:19 And so I did that. And the dude, I ain't going to blast where he was from or whatever but he he's like he got a gun that was the second time that happened to me he said he got a gun so i was busted red-handed with the trunk open they took my ass put me in the car put me and the twin in the car as soon as we got in that motherfucker one officer got over here me and him right here, that motherfucker just said, boom, with the stick, boom, we hit in the corner, boom, just fucking us up. And the twin got out, but they sent me over to this,
Starting point is 03:19:52 it was a spot called the Glass House in downtown L.A. And that was my first time there. I'd been to the county, but I'd never been to the Glass House and that was a different experience. It was kind of dormy, but they made us eat in a dark-ass hall with the door
Starting point is 03:20:07 shut. It was dark as fuck, just nasty ass food. Chris came and bailed me out that motherfucker. I walked out of that motherfucker and I looked up in the sky like, shit, I ain't never coming back to this motherfucker no more. And I've been clean along with some
Starting point is 03:20:23 other things I went through where I was supposed to go to jail but, you know, they gave me a second chance. I had joint suspension. That was just like being in jail. And that also, that changed my life because like he said, you a gun-tote motherfucker. At that
Starting point is 03:20:40 time, I had to be like that because it was so many niggas getting killed and all the death row shit. The death row shit, don't get me wrong, I was down with that shit, I had to be like that because it was so many niggas getting killed and all the death row shit. The death row shit, don't get me wrong. I was down with that shit, but at the same time, niggas was trying to get at me. You knew what was going on. Trying to get at me. So I'm going to stay on deck with mine, you know, because like I said, I had homeboys.
Starting point is 03:20:58 I don't want to mention their names. Bloods. One of them niggas is on you. They on some different shit. Stay on point That let me know nigga They trying to blaze you You know what I mean So I had to be on point
Starting point is 03:21:12 I had goons too You know back then You know with all that shit I wasn't on no goon shit Like sicking niggas on I wasn't doing that type of shit But you was protected But I had to be protected
Starting point is 03:21:23 And that was the price I had to pay for being protected. I'm going to protect my life and whoever with me and around me because if motherfuckers coming up tripping, I'm blasting. Fuck that. Absolutely. I'm blasting. So let me ask you, so how was that energy leading up to Tupac's death?
Starting point is 03:21:40 Because where was you at when you got that call? Because like I said, that was like the first serious, you know what i mean yeah that's the cold shit about it is i i called snoop i said snoop i said because i was at that time i was single uh the girl i was what i just broke up with her and um so i had my house know, I had a house to myself. Like, shit, nigga, I'm a bachelor, nigga. What's up, Snoop? Come over. You know, I'm just over here watching the fight.
Starting point is 03:22:12 I'm going to invite a gang of people over. We're going to barbecue. He was like, fuck that shit. I'm going to Vegas with Tupac and them. They're going out to Vegas for the fight. So I was like, damn, nigga, you don't never kick it with me. Shit, nigga, you know, moving around. So a couple hours went by in the house, just getting
Starting point is 03:22:30 everything ready. Went to the store, got every store getting stuff ready. I heard a horn. Bing, bing, bing, honking in front of my house. So I looked out the house. Excuse me, y'all. I looked out the house and Snoop was outside in a white motherfucking Rolls Royce with the peanut butter inside.
Starting point is 03:22:48 It was clean with the top down. I was like, nigga, that's your shit? He was like, yeah, nigga, that's my shit. And he pulled up. He surprised me. I said peanut butter interior in a rhyme. I just wanted to go, I ain't bite your shit. Go ahead.
Starting point is 03:23:02 He straight surprised me. And so he came you know, he came and hung with me, hung out. He let me dry that motherfucker. I was like, damn, even though I had a 600, but he let me dry that Bentley. It wasn't a Bentley, it was a Rolls Royce. He let me dry that motherfucker. And we just having a good time
Starting point is 03:23:19 barbecuing, having fun. And the fight was coming on. He came to fuck with me for the fight instead of going to Vegas. So he never went to Vegas? He never went to Vegas. He didn't go off top. So we watched the fight. We were doing everything, watching the fight, having a good time.
Starting point is 03:23:38 We was hanging out, you know, some females and shit around. They was hanging out, everybody chilling and just having a good time, you know. And then he got a, you know, just, and then he got a, you know, just like a gang of homies, gang of homegirls, and then it's like,
Starting point is 03:23:50 then he had this, the next tale back then, remember the mother? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't know, what kind of next tale he had, but he had, the motherfucker could go,
Starting point is 03:24:00 that whatever it was, it was hitting him all the way from what was going on from Vegas. So he was, they was like, we could way from what was going on from Vegas. So he was, they was like, we could hear the shit and then he started getting calls and shit and they was telling him that Tupac got shot and da-da-da-da-da.
Starting point is 03:24:14 So Snoop, we, I kicked everybody out. Get the fuck out of here, everybody. Get out of here. And he took off. That's when he went to Vegas to go see him, to get out there to see what was going on and that's when he went out there and when he went to Vegas to go see him, to get out there to see what was going on. And that's when he went out there and when he went to the hospital. But I if I wouldn't have talked to him and got him to come over to my house, he probably would have been right there in the car with them.
Starting point is 03:24:37 Wow. Yeah. And been shot, too, as well. You know, but that I talked to him, you know, I talked to. And, you know, I didn't think he was going to come, but he came. Surprised the shit out of me. Because, see, a lot of people say that that was like the downfall of death row, like meaning them getting involved in too much gang politics. Was that something that affected you as well? Well, shit, it didn't affect me
Starting point is 03:25:06 just for as, it didn't affect me because I was doing my thing with wrestling. Yeah, he had his own lane. You know, we was in a whole nother, we was doing
Starting point is 03:25:14 a whole nother thing. Right. But, I think that that was the start of the downfall, you know, because right after that, then Suge went to jail
Starting point is 03:25:24 for, what, three, four years? Three to five, something, then Suge went to jail for, what, three, four years? Three to five, something like that. He went to jail for a minute, and shit just started going downhill. Like, the shit started going downhill. You know, I wasn't around and all up in it to really
Starting point is 03:25:38 you know, go into detail of how it was going downhill, but all the stuff that we were seeing going on, it was like, oh, this shit is folding. Niggas getting killed, motherfuckers, it was a gang of shit going on.
Starting point is 03:25:54 Because it went from like, I remember, let me compare it to Def Jam, I remember me going to Def Jam and me feeling like a sign of relief, because I didn't have to be in the hood. I didn't have to be on the block. I didn't have to sell drugs or whatever
Starting point is 03:26:08 and I would be in the record label. I still could roll dice. I still could get my hair cut. I still could buy weed. Yeah. But it was safe. Yeah.
Starting point is 03:26:20 Like, I remember, like I said, me hearing the stories in the beginning In the beginning Of the death rolls Yeah And you guys having
Starting point is 03:26:28 A sanctuary And I know I kind of Asked you this a little bit earlier But do you remember Like when you just Like besides you Having your own thing Do you remember when it
Starting point is 03:26:39 Like It started sort of changing Where it's just like I know we said the money earlier But like you know Because the studio Is a creative space. Yeah. Yeah. So I remember me hearing like there was dogs in the studio, like pit bulls and all of that.
Starting point is 03:26:54 All that shit was in there. It was some crazy shit. But it started changing the more new motherfuckers came to be on the team for sure team and You got different influences and people influence and should Mm-hmm to where it was like making him think that he was like a Super duper gang so he started moving in the gangster way He forgot about the business part. He was still sharp with the business now. Don't get me wrong He's sharp with the business, but it started, that gang element started taking over that business. How about Sue, right?
Starting point is 03:27:31 Yes. So that's when shit started going left, you know, instead of just strictly sticking to this shit, saying, look, I want you niggas to learn this shit that I'm going to teach y'all so you guys can start businesses. Not go kill, I don't mean kill, I'll take that back, not kill, but not to go and beat motherfuckers up and us going around terrorizing. Let's do it like this.
Starting point is 03:27:59 And that would have prevented a lot of that shit. Making these motherfuckers into businessmen instead of them making you into a gangster and went the other way instead of that shit. Making these motherfuckers into businessmen instead of them making you into a gangster and it went the other way instead of that way. You know what I mean? You have a relationship with Harry O? Yeah, Harry O is my guy. Yes, indeed.
Starting point is 03:28:15 I used to talk to him when I was a pup as well. Wow. Because he was like the original owner of Defro. How did you remember that? I don't know all of the facts of that. The politics of that, right? Yeah, but I know I used to talk to him. Actually, he was locked up with my homeboy, Big Fab.
Starting point is 03:28:35 They were sellies. Was that TI? NBC. Okay. And I used to talk to him on the phone. Wow. You know, as a young kid, he used to always tell me, like, Warren, you need to get into real estate.
Starting point is 03:28:48 I would never listen. I wouldn't listen to nothing he was talking about. I had a little bit of cheese. I didn't have a lot of that hundred million that I seen, but I had some. I was all right. He told you what to do. He was telling you real estate in the 90s.
Starting point is 03:29:01 Always. Wow. Real estate, real estate, real estate. And I'm going to tell y'all this. to stay in the 90s? Always. Wow. Real estate, real estate, real estate. And... You do it? I'm going to tell y'all this. I ain't told nobody this one, but I ain't, you know,
Starting point is 03:29:13 but this, but back in the day, I'm not going to lie, I used to, I don't know if I should tell this, but back in the day, you know, back,
Starting point is 03:29:24 it's old now. I back, it's old now. I mean, it's old news, everything. He out now, everybody is moving. But I used to grab the paper bags like money that he was sending. I used to grab the paper bags from another cat that I knew. I used to grab the paper bags, like bags, like that, with money all in, all them motherfuckers,
Starting point is 03:29:47 they was all like this. And I used to take them and I would put them in the closet and I would, you know what I mean, that, I would take that and put it in my pocket.
Starting point is 03:29:56 Maybe $25, $30. I wasn't taking everything. That's it. I wasn't, because I was like, shit, these niggas would kill me if I took a gag of this shit.
Starting point is 03:30:05 But, that was it. There was't, because I was like, shit, these niggas would kill me if I took a gag at this shit. Right. But, that was it. There was bread back then, you know, so when he said that, he was like, shit, I seen it.
Starting point is 03:30:13 You know, I seen that part, but that, you know, that was it, you know, but, I just wish everything
Starting point is 03:30:21 would have worked out for everybody where, because both of them dudes, him and Suge, both sharp business-wise. And if they would have been able to keep their shit together and not fall out. And them niggas would probably be the biggest shit right now. The biggest thing ever. Period.
Starting point is 03:30:39 Right now. Because they both sharp. They both sharp. Yeah. Yeah. Let's talk about Smoking Me Out featuring the Ozzy. They both sharp. Yeah. Let's talk about Smoking Me Out featuring the Isley Brothers. How did this record come about? Did you
Starting point is 03:30:53 smoke with the Isley Brothers? Did Brian smoke with us? I can't. Jesus. I forgot I was a fan of Ron Isley and it came about through Renee and Angela remember
Starting point is 03:31:17 Renee and Angela what was it and they they the ones made that connection for me because i was cool with renee and angela we was real cool renee was involved in the michael jackson uh situation that i was involved in as far as doing production i did like four records for michael jackson they never came out but I did like four records for him. Matty Madden. Yeah.
Starting point is 03:31:49 Matty Madden. You can't just be saying shit like that. I'm serious. I wish I could get the tapes. You wasn't in the studio with him. We wasn't in the studio. It was me, Renee, and what was the white dude with the beard kind of? Bruce Willems?
Starting point is 03:32:06 Bruce Whedon. Bruce Whedon. Whedon. Bruce Whedon. And we was in that motherfucker. I did all kind of music for him. I even told him to tell him the idea of, because he was getting
Starting point is 03:32:21 beat up by the press. So I told him you guys need to tell him to make a song firing back at the press for beating him up. This wasn't about none of that shit later on. This was just, they was battering, battling. I forgot what it was. They was battering him about something. So I said, get back out, they asked.
Starting point is 03:32:37 I told Rene and Bruce to tell him this is what he need to do to get back out. Get back at him and talk your shit. Don't let him just down. You talk your shit. But I him just down you talk your shit but I met him you met Mike at record one before Dre owned
Starting point is 03:32:50 record one I met him at record one and he came out was like hey what's up Warren and da da da da was his hate like hey
Starting point is 03:32:57 it wasn't none of that none of that shit it was that it was like hey what's going on man like not he wasn't he didn't have like
Starting point is 03:33:04 he was hardcore you know there's rumors that he was a c It was like, hey, what's going on, man? Like, not, not, he wasn't, didn't have like a. It was hardcore? Like a deep. Starting point is 03:33:13 It wasn't that. Yeah, it wasn't that. It was a regular nigga. Like. Michael? Michael. Cool. Like, cool.
Starting point is 03:33:21 Just, you know, just like. He's like, what's up? What's up? He was like, I love your music. He's like, what's up? What's up? He was like, I love your music. I love what you're doing. The music that you sent, I really like.
Starting point is 03:33:30 It's dope. He was telling me all this because I wanted to meet him. I'm like, shit, I need to meet Michael. Shit, I'm in here with y'all,
Starting point is 03:33:37 but I need to meet Michael. And they made it happen. And that tripped me out because that was like some shit that once in a lifetime type shit like a motherfucker. In your wildest dreams, you never thought that you would be able to get in there with Michael Jackson. Like, I was fucked up. Like, God damn.
Starting point is 03:33:55 And that made me say, shit, you know what? I'm in this motherfucker. I need to get down. I got to produce. I'm producing. I'm trying to do everything. How about Prince? You ever met Prince? I met to produce. I'm producing. I'm trying to do everything. How about Prince? You ever met Prince?
Starting point is 03:34:06 I met Prince. Prince, same way. Cool nigga. Cool. Where you meet Prince at? Straight give you game. At the Beverly Hills Hotel, he did a show. He did a private show.
Starting point is 03:34:16 The Beverly Hills Hotel, that's the one at the Polo Lounge? Right there on Sunset. Okay, okay, okay. Yep. Starting point is 03:34:26 As me... He had on some shit. He was put on stage. I was just a fan. You know, you know, he a weird dude, man. He a weird dude. You know what?
Starting point is 03:34:37 I sampled Darlin' Nicki. Me and Nate Dogg. I'm going to try. Once I download all my ADAS to digital I'm going to bring that record back out We redid
Starting point is 03:34:51 And then they said I once knew a bitch named Manny May But he was doing And then they said, I once knew a bitch named Manny May. But he was doing the same shit that the way Prince was singing it. Why? Whoa. And God damn it. I wish I had that motherfucker right now.
Starting point is 03:35:20 You ain't playing for Prince. No, we had to get the sample clear. Oh, you got it clear? Fuck no. Oh, you got it clear? Fuck no. Hey, hey. But look, this nigga, look. No, but look. But look, he said, he said, he said, he said, I forgot his lawyer name.
Starting point is 03:35:45 But he said that, I think it was, huh? Macmillan, was Londell Macmillan? Londell Macmillan, oh yeah. That was his lawyer. He owned a sauce. The only way he would clear it is if I would fly to Minnesota, huh? You picked a sauce over XXL too, so he ain't going to see this. The only way he would do it is fly to Minnesota, take it from there. The only way that he would do it is if I to Minnesota Take it from there He said The only way That uh
Starting point is 03:36:05 Uh He would do it Is if I flew to Minnesota To sit down and meet with him But I was on some old Young wild shit I'm like I ain't getting ready
Starting point is 03:36:13 To go sit down with that nigga What do you want to sit down With me for So I was like Fuck that shit I ain't doing that shit When I should have been thinking And went and sat with this nigga
Starting point is 03:36:22 And got that record clear Just sat with him And chopped it up with him, because he pretty much was like a fan to me, and I didn't know it. But I just thought he was on some other shit. I'm all up. I'm not getting ready to go sit down with him. Shit.
Starting point is 03:36:35 So I was just like, you know what? I fucked up. But I just had to redo. I redid the record just changing the notes. You got to be Prince. You got to be big. You got to be Pac.
Starting point is 03:36:49 Tina Turner. Oh, yeah, Tina Turner. Tina Turner. Yeah, you. Eazy-E. Anita Baker. Damn. The gang of motherfuckers. Huh?
Starting point is 03:37:01 Yes, a lot of motherfuckers. Like, this one, you know, what was special to me, meeting Michael McDonald. That was special to me because I had never had a chance to really meet him, but he was performing at a casino not too far from where I live. So I said, God damn. Starting point is 03:37:28 I said, hey, come here. I said, look, T.O. Michael McDonald, Warren G. is here, and I want to meet him. Like, you know, one of his guys. So they told him what was up. And they grabbed me from the crowd. A lot of the motherfuckers in there didn't even know I was Warren G. Because they was older. So they don't really know who I am
Starting point is 03:37:45 so he took me back there I got it on film too I never blasted it but he took me I went back there and just met him for the first time he hugged me and was like thank you man you know for redoing that record

Starting point is 03:38:17 He don't even listen to my shit. He like, he think that my shit was before his shit. So I was tripping like, God damn. And he was just like, Warren, like I say, he was like, Warren, I just want to thank you for, you know, redoing the music and making it bigger than we did. You know, and he was like, he was like that. Starting point is 03:41:09 But I wasn't lashing out at him. People was lashing out and shit like that. But I was kind of pissed off. I wish he would have put me in there. Nigga, we sandboxed. We could have did a little medley, you know, but it's all good.
Starting point is 03:41:58 I ain't tripping. I still, you know, I still had a good time, even though I wasn't down on the field and around everything. I was in the crowd, but I still had a good time.
