It always was the banging this record. I didn't say you make babies to him. No, no, no, okay, I'm gonna get to that. I wanna get to that. Everybody got a baby behind this guy. But, um, but um, um, He makes, he revolutionary, he revolutionary to hip hop to me in a way that, excuse me, R&B and hip hop, because, yeah, melodies, he was right, it was almost like he was writing it from a rapist perspective,

but it was 100%. Kind of like what MCPA doing now in the way. I think he, I think they're all his children. So if the people don't know right now, we are talking to the dream and a... How many babies you think was made to your music? 2.5. 2.5. At least like 3 million.

You got to. As many people voted for Trump. Oh, God. Why we go then? So look, Drain, right? How did you develop that style? Because everybody is kind of somewhat mimicking what you do. Like, you had melodies first in your music.

You appealed, I put it like this. I'm going to be honest, right? I really wasn't a big R&B fan, right? But there's certain people that have certain music. It was like they made it for me not like, you know, Like, what I mean is it was easier for me to understand. To digest it, yeah. It easier for me to digest it, and you are 100%.

So, yeah, how did you develop that style? How do you think so? Oh, man. Answer both at the same time. I think I will. I think most, um, at R&B at the time was more of offense. I mean, it's more defense, I guess I should say. And my shit was just more offensive.

Like, and that's how I kind of what I feel about rap. Like, I feel like it's just high power offense all the time. And fuck the repercussions after that. So if you put that in football terminology, it's like, fuck it, let's have a 55-50 game. Like, no defense. Like, just say all the shit you need to say. And, yeah, you're right. A lot of that just came from where I was from West Side Atlanta.

West Side Atlanta. We grew up to be aspiring, you know, rappers at the time I came with 90s was my shit. I thought you were Virginia too. No, no, no, from Atlanta, Georgia. Okay, cool. Outcast is popping? Exactly.

So you got Outcast popping. Biggie mob. Exactly. You got Goody mob. And everybody's kind of gravitating toward this Atlanta scene. And at the time, you know, Freakley was the biggest thing. Biggest thing in the world.

Like, period. Hip hop one. Yeah, big. It's like the center of the culture was in Atlanta for me. And I'm this teenager young growing up. Of course I want some champagne. I don't know. I don't get anything right now.

No homo, but I think he's a lot. So for me, it was easy to see. And plus then, Jermaine Duprestered riding around in Ferraris and shit. Dallas Austin was getting it at that particular point. A lot of people don't even know. And when you saw that, you know,

and being on the Bible Belt is where the music part comes from. Like, because you're in a place where Baptist church is, you know, like we had to sing in a church. It's a part of the culture. Anyway. Like, L. I'm going to say a lot of like L singers,

I noticed. they started out in like church and like uh choirs in the choir oh period oh you're sorry little heads that's your patrol that's your delion that's your delion

and that's your champagne cup right here so get ahead continue so so for me it was just more so about let me take a sip I gotta get my shit in let's get it right let's get it right

Oh, yeah, exactly. That's how he is off camera. I'm like, I probably had that coming from like five jokes ago, but, you know. I seen Hove one day and Hove just stopped me. This was, when he came out here, Diego was there. Hose said, I would ask you how you doing, but your glasses say it all. And I said, that was some funny shit. I didn't say it as good as he said it, but it was like, he's really a funny guy.

Oh, man. I think the humor at the top lives there. Like, I think all of us is just, you just naturally have to gravitate to a place, you know, to a place, you know, shit's fucked up out here. So it was like, you know, you better have something. Now, laughing about she. I just listen to Sizzar album? Awesome.

Why are you crying? She's like the side-chick of her records. Like, she was always the way. The way she was breaking. down, she was hurt. And it just made me think of the shit I did in the past like for years ago and I still just wanted to say, I'm sorry.

I remember at one point, like Mary J. Blas, for example. Like if soon as you heard her go through tragedy, everybody would say, that album gonna be fired Like do an R&B person Have to go through drama in order for the music to be like that Man I think

I'm speaking for myself as a songwriter And I have to say that like It doesn't matter which genre I'm in It's an animal that's hard to tame Because we constantly need things To fuel that you know inspiration Yeah yeah and it's hard because you know On one hand you're having

you know people wanting you to live everyday life the exact same way and then your life changes in multiple ways first of all you learn things that are different even just from one stretch going from oh when I grew up I was in Baptist Church and now I'm questioning

everything everything that everybody does but that's the writer in me like and when you write you don't you're basically you're basically inventing the words are invented the scenarios and all of the things that you're talking about is being invented. So you

have to invent those situations to even talk about, or you can talk about some shit that's old. Right. Or somebody else's tragedy? Or somebody else's tragedy. Right. But I think it's such a hard animal to tame. Right. Like, really, and I say that with the utmost

respect for all the great writers. They have to go through, you have to go through something. You see these movies right. Yeah. You know, it's all inspired by something. Yeah, well, you can't want, you know, the heart and soul from somebody without them pouring out their heart. The best art comes out of pain. Oh, of course. Yeah. How

did you write umbrella? It was just raining? Oh, man. No. Did you have an umbrella? No. Was it raining? You ain't had my umbrella? You was like, man. I would have had an umbrella. I definitely bought a lot after that. You bought a lot of umbrellas. They don't never rain on you.

Shit. So how do you? Because like, that always amazes me. You know, one, I know, I know, about most of the songwriting you do and for you to step out yourself and jump into another artist's zone

not only just any artist but of the different sets. Oh man. How do you do that? Oh man, you know, I'm like 99 people. My wife witnesses it all the time. I know she doesn't really admit it but I know I can be Beyonce when I wake up.

I'm re-owned about 3 o'clock. God damn. I'm Jay and pushing about 7 and 8 and then 9. I'm Celine Diaz, then 12, I'm like, let's ride a movie. Improvs, they. Are you ever Kanye West? Oh, of course. You ever win Kanye West?

Of course. Nick, I can never go Kanye, last. Nah, you stop. This is a joke for me. Because I always said, never go over, but I was trying to, you know, it didn't work. It didn't like.

It made sense to all of us. Yeah, yeah. But, Martin, brother. So how did you get in that zone? Like, what was you doing? I think it was just the, I think it was just time. You know, I had my first daughter at that time.

And I think it was time for me to stop fucking around and playing with myself and where I needed to go. And I just turned on a different thing. You know, it's just like a switch. I knew how to do what I needed to do, but I've always done better with pressure. And that song was just out of pure pressure in life.

And not really just about being broke and not having certain things. You know, I was okay then. I could say that I had a music career at that particular point in time. I was getting checks out of the game. Yeah, as a writer. I was getting checks out of the game.

had a publishing deal, but it was just one of those things where it clicked and when you can see it, it's almost like having an out of body experience. I watched myself walk in and write that record. And you wrote it before her 100%. Oh, no, the record was wrote originally for Britney Spears.

Oh. Wow. If anybody remembers the umbrella incident. Tell us the umbrella incident. Let's get the umbrella incident, God damn. I think it was, I don't know if she was driving with the kid. You wrote it. You can't see if Britney Spears would have fit on brother. Nope. No. Who's she gonna put on there, kid, bro? Because she, look, who's, I don't

think about it. Yeah, man. It wouldn't. It wouldn't. Um, but she worked on pretty, I mean, she wouldn't fight her own. Well, that's what it came from. I worked on a record called me against the music that featured Madonna at the time earlier on. Yeah, wait, wait, wait, wait. So, let's make some more. He said, go ahead, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. We're so happy for you, brother. What the next? Michael Jackson? Did a moonwalk in the session? hilarious is right but I was it was already a relationship there so in this game you know the best chance for me being Britney Spears record to Rihanna record oh that's

a whole other thing I sent it in a person is my good friend now I won't throw her under the bus but she was I sent it to Britney to Britney's people and one of the people who got the record actually is a good friend of mine is now we worked really really close but at that time told me wasn't a hit record. What? That was the word I got back. Oh, brother wasn't a hit record. Yeah. We're going to take some shots soon. We need to get this to get this name out of there. You probably not going to get. That's my boo. And it just grew on from there. I'm like, fuck that. I don't know what she's talking about. She's smoking something. Like she's high or she's in fear of losing a job. I don't know what it is.

And literally after that, the record was heard. It's kind of crazy how this story happened. Me and Tricky Stewart did the record, but the record got from Atlanta. It was just a peep of it and got heard at Def Jam by L.A. Reed. And he sent a good friend of mine is now. Her name is Karen Kwok, down to retrieve the record. She's like, who the fuck is writing this shit? Who is it? And at the time, you know, the young guy didn't have no super big placement.

So nobody knew who the fuck I was, you know, really just people in the city. Of course, people in the studio where we were working at in Atlanta. but that record of course went from there to LA and Karen saying you know who this record would be great on Rihanna and the record got played and I guess she heard about the record at a certain point in time she's out at the Grammys that year earlier in 2007

and she heard about the record I guess she had heard it but we had not cut the record and she walked up to my manager and said that's my fucking record no no no Rihanna Oh yeah, just like that. That's my fucking record. Period. Oh yeah, yeah. You can't argue with a Western Indian girl.

You can't argue with a Western Indian girl. You just got to sit in a BS. You are correct. She's patient. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just don't, don't do it. Of course, when I heard that she said that in that way, I was like, yeah, that's the motherfucker that shit had a record.

Right. Attitude, everything fit in the persona, right? You got it. Right. And I was already kind of following her. She already had a couple of records that I felt were great. And you knew what this record was going to go that that? That, that?

That's that far away? How big was going to be? I think timing is all based on a certain math that we can never really solve. You know, lightning in the bottle things happen for you. And it's a blessing that those things are out of your control. You know, the only thing you do is be prepared. So I was prepared for the moment. But to say I knew exactly what it would do.

I knew what it was. You know what it was a good record. I knew it was a better than good record. Right. I knew it was a great record. But shit happens, man. People shot crazy stupid-ass videos to certain songs that I hide or rolled a shit out the wrong way and you're like, what the fuck, you know? There's other things that are coming to play.

Other forces that come into play, yeah. Now, you ever wrote a record and it was like, let me take my shit back. Like a road a record for somebody. Because I ain't for fun. That's why I can't write shit with nobody. I'm taking my shit back. He said he should have been doing it by himself. This came out to be a hit.

And I find a reason I'd like the person. He knows. You ever did that before like? I didn't want to. You didn't want to? I didn't want to do it. Or the person could hit the notes, right or something? No, no, no, no, no.

It wasn't what did you say? Hit the notes, right? The notes are we need a pussy. Come on, get your mind. I don't know where he took it. Yeah. Don't wake my gun on. I'm trying to, I'm trying to stay right there.

So you made the record and you wrote it for them and then... I wrote it for him, which was Jamie Fox at the time. the time. It was a record called Rocking that shit. Rocking that shit. Yeah. He couldn't rock that shit. So it just turned into one of those things where I wrote it for him and he was like I think I did like six records

on that album. The first single ended up being Blame it. Which was a record that was an interpolation of I Love Your Girl, which was my older record at the time. So

I'm happy either way. Like, okay. He's like, this record's cool, but dream, I need a dream record. I need a dream. I'm like, this new shit. Like, do this shit. He's like, nah, I'm good. And so I was kind of happy. He said, no, I'm good.

And that shit was my first single. Just make some noise with dream being like me. That's exactly what I was doing. That's exactly what I was a kid. That was a good night. So what's it like being in a session with Kanye, who asked? For me, pretty, pretty tame. Right.

Yeah. What does that mean? I didn't know what that means. Pretty, pretty, pretty. tame is, you know, everybody has these, you know, ideas, just tigers and bangles and elephants. Well, you know, people just have different ideas about people, for sure, yeah.

You know, and I think, you know, on some real nigger shit, it's just one of the things that when you people, you people, you know, everybody has their ups, their downs, their shit did they go through. But most of all, I think when you're talking about the creators,

they're pretty loved, you know, individuals by all of us. And it's love coming back, you know, our way. So when I'm with Kanye, like, I don't see anything other than greatness, you know, and what he's trying to get done. Like, I don't see any other noise, any other shit. You know, noise may happen after that, but for me, we on one, we like, locked in.

So it's synergy between y'all. Oh, yeah. We walk in and we get the shit done, you know. And it's been days or, it's been nights, man. I've flown out to Paris and we didn't do shit for like three, four days. And I'm just, you know. Cargo? Exactly.

I eat Scalgo in Paris. I'm a different type of person in Paris. I'm a different type of person in Paris. I eat snails with cheese in Paris. Damn, he had cheese to them. And it's fantastic. Next ago he said he had it in bacon. No bacon.

No bacon. No bacon. So single ladies. Because that's a super girl right there. It's what else at that time? This is the easiest one. Yeah? What else would Beyonce be singing about?

Mm-hmm. So I'm a single ladies? Is that the way you looked at it? Yeah, she was in a relationship. Y'all didn't know if Jay was there. Y'all didn't know what it was. I happened to be on tour at the time with Jay and Mary. I was opening up for Jay and Mary on the tour.

And I remember Jay coming in, he's like, y'all need you need you going right with my girl. And I was like, all right, cool, bet. It's nothing. The next thing that popped up is, oh, cool, so, Oh, cool. So, you know, you're like an investigator. You're just reporting the news.

Like, okay, nobody really knows. If you're like it, you should have put a ring on because it meant a whole bunch of shit to a lot of people. It's a coffee, I call it a coffee table conversation. It was just one of those things that was an obvious thing to write. And, you know, you didn't see the ring into the video. I was just like, oh, cool, I'm going to set all this shit up. And so, yeah, what a better public way to say,

oh, yeah, we actually together together. musical TMZ. That is a real moment. That is a real moment. That's pretty cool. And it's like, it's like, Jay just continues to work with you. Like, they all, like, one of the craziest masterminds in the world knows that you're a mastermind. That's crazy.

Like, that's all those. That's what, that's what kind of matters to me the most of what I do with the people I respect and that I work with. Is that the greatest people who are doing the shit knows. Like, we think we've finished with the album, no, we're not, call that nigger. Even if he just got to come listen to it. Even if he adds four bars or he adds three hooks or a whole song, make sure we call him. And I take the most pride in that because that's just more important, you know, to me.

That the legends respect you as a legend. Yeah, that the legends are like, yo, like that's the guy. Right. Yeah, that's way more important. me, you know, and I've literally sacrificed a certain, I guess, I guess, I can't say, shimmer on my own armor because of that, you know, because I will take that backseat to things that I feel like that are more important to me or more important to the world that they get a certain thing out.

So I said that back to Jay as they're finishing up because I just wanted to get ahead and just start working on what his next shit was. I knew why Star was going to be crazy.
