Duck Call Room - Uncle Si Pulls an All-Nighter With Matthew McConaughey’s Brother

Episode Date: October 8, 2026

Uncle Si looks back on going to war at just 20 years old and admits it sounds even crazier now than it did then. The boys reflect on the young Americans who have stepped up in impossible moments, incl...uding the passengers who fought back on 9/11. Martin remembers exactly where he was when the attacks happened and Phillip wrestles with what it means that an entire generation now knows that day only as history. John-David’s son joined the middle school drumline, resulting in video gold. Plus, Si comes back from a trip to visit Matthew McConaughey’s brother full of tales of late-night karaoke, poker games, and questionable sleep habits. Starting point is 00:00:00 Let's roll. What are we doing? I don't know. What do we ever know? Why start now? Why would we want to know what we're going to talk about now? Welcome back to the duck call room, ladies and gentlemen. Phil, I ain't seen you in a while.
Starting point is 00:00:17 Good to have you back. Thank you, buddy. Where you been? Oh, I've been running the roads. Actually, me and Cy just got back from a big hunting trip in West Texas. And I will say that I can verify that Sy's back with his shotgun. New teeth, new eyes. Hey.
Starting point is 00:00:33 Oh, yeah. The boys. New shirt. Same socks, same shoes, though. Same hat. Same hat. I got a different one at the house. And the same cup.
Starting point is 00:00:45 Hey, the new is what matters. The new eyes, the new teeth. I never knew that the teeth would make you shoot better, too. But look at it. You were shooting? I was on. He was on. He was on.
Starting point is 00:00:55 It was on like a chicken bone. He looked at the fendiped when I asked him. Well, but he ain't going to tell you, he's not very talkative because I heard he had a poker game at his. house last night but you know what that means you can't go to bed and that's a problem you can't go to sleep yeah you can't too many people at the house so he's he's a little he's a little tired this morning but he'll he'll get there this afternoon whatever you won't call it what times you go to bed oh man it was about 12 oh that wasn't too that ain't bad we quit about 11 30 yeah that's just three hours
Starting point is 00:01:29 four hours after your normal bedtime so that ain't too bad well not only that but he just got back from the doctor's office because I had to go, I went and picked him up because his eye, did y'all see his eye the other day was so red? Oh yeah, it looked like a black eye. So, look. I asked him if he talked about to Christine again. No, here's what happened. Home remedy.
Starting point is 00:01:48 Yep. Playing doctor. What ought you put on your eye to fix it? It was a sin. And tag. And then I put on a cure chrome on top of that. And then tried to pull it off. Did you put any Vicks vapor up on it?
Starting point is 00:02:02 It's got it down. It got it down. So where it's just a little little, little bitty thing. Yeah. It was about the size of English pea. There you go. Why are those peas from England? Because they're not any good.
Starting point is 00:02:13 I don't like a mean. That's my least favorite of the pea family. They're not bad. He's just my least favorite of the whole pea family. Like, I'm just like, I know. They are what they are. Yeah. They're green mush.
Starting point is 00:02:25 That's basically describes England. They are pretty green because it's so cool and wet over there. You don't even know you're eating really when you're eating. eating them. Yeah, there's. Something else. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:36 It always goes back to some kind of thing. Always goes. Hold on. What were you shooting? Doves. Doves. And all three types. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:45 White wings, morning doves, and then the ring neck. A collared dog. The ring neck. And they don't count against your limit. You kill hundreds of them. That's why he shot eight and a half boxes of shells in three days.
Starting point is 00:03:01 How's your shoulder? There you go. Oh, That 28 guys their barrel was hot. I bet it was. You shot eight boxes and shells? Yeah. That's a height there.
Starting point is 00:03:11 Asian day. That's a fun hunt. 200 shells, yeah. Get you some of that, man. That's good. Why didn't you shoot all 10? I just run out of does. Ran out of opportunities.
Starting point is 00:03:23 Can't kill 15 a day? They finally got me cornered in. They had a bunch on the left, a bunch on the right. You know, they had to come straight in for me to get a shot at them. There you go. Because these boys on the left, that was Jim, Jimbo. Yeah. Yeah, he's a shotgun.
Starting point is 00:03:39 Jimmy Lindsay. You went with a guy named Jimbo? Yeah. What were the, just for my own curiosity, what were the other names of this? Rowdy, Bull. Okay. Jimbo. Jimbo.
Starting point is 00:03:53 Merle. Yeah, sure. No, sweet boy. Yeah, sweet boy. What a, uh, that, huh. Oh, and Rooster. Oh, Rooster. Of course, Rooster.
Starting point is 00:04:02 That's Matthew McConaughey's. his older brother. And then I saw big buddies. After we hunt all day, then we sit around at night and they hired somebody for an entertainment. That was you. Oh, no, no,
Starting point is 00:04:15 no. He had a guy that played guitar and he could play the guitar. Oh. You know, but I was playing all night and we didn't get out of there until like two o'clock. Hey, I went to bed at like 10.30. I said,
Starting point is 00:04:26 Zah, you're on your own. I mean, and they stayed up all night. He woke me up in the morning and said, you're going? I said, have you lost your mind? I said, I'm going to go sleep.
Starting point is 00:04:37 Yeah, I ain't been to bad yet. I got in bed like 15 minutes ago, it is? Yeah, I ain't going to doubt you dove. Oh, that's funny. So you just stayed up all night, karaoke? Oh, jarioki. But we did, hey, we sounded good. I'm serious.
Starting point is 00:04:54 It was like, hey. I believe, what songs did you sing? Oh, a billion of them. Seven Spanish Angels. That's a go-to for us. We sung that. George Jones. He stopped loving her today.
Starting point is 00:05:05 George Jones. George Jones. That was one of the one. He said, well, we got to sing George. He's got a little set list if you ever go somewhere with it.
Starting point is 00:05:13 Oh, yeah. You run through them pretty quick. And the cool thing about Rooster's Place is he's got a, he's got a big picture on a whole wall of George Jones. It's gigantic. I'm serious. I'm serious. Just as big as that wall right back here.
Starting point is 00:05:28 Yeah. And so a guy of artists drew it. There you go. Picture of George Jones. Yeah, a picture of Georgia. There you go. If you had, if you had just a whole wall dedicated to some other human, who would you put up there?
Starting point is 00:05:42 That's a good question. I would like to have Jesus. Oh, that's a good one. No, no, I'm serious. I mean, yeah, but I... No, no, I'm serious. I would like to have him because, hey, you know, we got pictures that they say are him.
Starting point is 00:05:55 And I don't know. I want you to say that in that mural. Yeah. Well, to God that Drew is never been afraid to take. Have you showered since you went on this trip? You're wearing the exact same clothes. I just got back. I just got back today. You're wearing the same shirt and same hat.
Starting point is 00:06:10 Oh, you just drove straight in? I love my shirt. You came from there today? Just got back. Okay. Wait for real? Yeah. Well, he's wearing the same clothes, dude.
Starting point is 00:06:22 Well, I didn't know since they played poker last night. I didn't know where the schedule. Oh, yeah. We did go to size and play a little poker. Yeah. I thought you just got back. I did. That's what he's just.
Starting point is 00:06:34 When was last time you shower? I didn't. He's going into full-blown McVillain on this one here. He's about to race. He's about to race an outhouse. So you would get a big picture of Jesus? Can we take Jesus out? Because I mean, that's not obvious.
Starting point is 00:06:51 That's obvious, yeah. No, I think size would be Elvis with as much he'd been talking about him. No, right. Every time I do something about Elvis Presley, I get mad. Oh, never mind. Sorry, we don't want to make you mad. We went to. That'd be like if you sat there and watch Fox News all day.
Starting point is 00:07:09 You know, what is the place that Elvis, you know, up? Graceland. Graceland. Yeah, Lisland. Graceland. Well, I want to tell you, I'm looking at all the stuff he's got in there. And Bridget walks up behind me and she's, what's wrong, cowboy? And I said, oh, I'm pissed off.
Starting point is 00:07:27 And she said, why? I said, because Colonel Parker run that man to death. And if I had a bull whip, I would literally take the skin off of his body. I have a bullwit. Do you need to borrow it? Oh, no, I'm serious. If I could get a whole. He don't like Colonel Parker.
Starting point is 00:07:47 He would be skinless. He don't like Colonel Parker and ain't a big fan of Colonel Sanders. Well, to be fair, Colonel Sanders. Well, I ain't a big fan of any colonels. I'm with you I can't imagine why I know I bet the McConaughey boys
Starting point is 00:08:02 is happy after this weekend oh yeah no we had look they are very good Erica and Rooster and Rooster
Starting point is 00:08:13 are very good host yeah I would suspect she cooks she cooks all kind of stuff y'all what was your face
Starting point is 00:08:23 she's like kings you know you know this show does always to some level come back to food. What was your favorite bite over there? I like knowing what people. Oh, hey, Jimbo cooked me a steak. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:35 And the first one he cooked, you know, I couldn't eat it because it's too rare. Mm. Oh, Jimbo, man. No, no. He didn't know. I told him. I said, hey, Jimbo, put a little more fire on mine.
Starting point is 00:08:46 Yeah, run that and back by there a couple of minutes. Yeah, I said, yo, cook it a couple more minutes longer. Get that thing well done. He cooked this one right. It was medium plus. So a steak. Like, I was hoping. hear something adventurous.
Starting point is 00:08:58 We did cook quay, I mean, doves. Oh, yeah, that was good. And they're good. You can't screw them off. Fantastic. Can't screw up a dove. Yeah, that was an argument going on
Starting point is 00:09:06 whether it was too hot or not. Oh, I don't like... I see hot? No, no, no, no, no. So, you know, they take the halapinas and they take the seeds out, but sometimes they leave all the seeds in. Amen.
Starting point is 00:09:20 Oh, so hot. Well, I don't know because, look, there's about five different... You need some tons? No, it's just too hot. Look, and they're rated by... You eat them that high? They're rated by the heat.
Starting point is 00:09:32 I don't. Because when you pick it, if it's got burn marks on it, I'm serious. Get away from it. Hey, you don't want to eat that one. Somebody's been smoking. That sucker will fire you up. No, it's literally got burn marks on the outside of. I have like little stress marks where you can see.
Starting point is 00:09:53 No. That's a hot. Those are generally hot. Like the little wrinkles? no they just look like cracks where it's like it's not a crack it's all over it
Starting point is 00:10:03 it almost looks like a what it is it's burn marks really it almost looks like a vein going on it you know who uses those no duck stamps domino's pizza oh also the great app and a good another thing you can do on your phone

Where? Johnny's jalapinos are not as hot as dominoes halipos.

Starting point is 00:12:30 and tell them we sent you. They saw something about a jalapena when you run him through a pizza oven and he gets hot. He gets hotter. Is this when your electricity went off and your refrigerator broke down? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:12:44 He had broke down in my field. And the guy has loaded the parts and the parts are in the house and the idiot won't come back, put it together. You don't have a refrigerator right now? No, I don't. How are you? Huh?
Starting point is 00:12:57 Boy, how weak are we? What has happened to society that now I'm not even doing. Do you not have a freezer either? I got to have a, yeah, if the freezer is good. The refrigerator don't work. Yeah, a refrigerator. It went out.
Starting point is 00:13:09 The compressor went out. Did you catch it? Oh, yeah. Compressor, yeah. Yeah, he comes in and he says the diagnosis, and I'll pay him a bunch of money to diagnose it, okay? Yeah. And he misdiagnosed it.
Starting point is 00:13:21 I had to come back. And he said, oh, well, I just didn't understand. It's the compressor. I said, well, it's always the compressor. Yeah. You know what? I've realized. in life?
Starting point is 00:13:32 What? Appliances, don't get them fixed. Just throw them in your front yard and get a new one. By the time the repairman shows up, it's going to cost you as much as a new friend. That's what I was thinking. After about five or six years, move it to your garage, get you a new one, and then you've always just kind of got, you know. They don't make things like they used to. A revolving door of them.
Starting point is 00:13:52 My parents had a microwave that lasted them for like 35 years. Probably still would work, too. Yeah, it just looks stupid. Now if you buy something, if you get two years out of it, you're like, hey, I'm doing pretty good. Yeah. Why is that, sir? Why does nothing work anymore? Do many computers, boys.
Starting point is 00:14:09 We don't have any master craftsman anymore. Too much computer. Too much, too many chips. Yeah. Too much shipping it in from other countries. That's the biggest thing going right now. AI. AI, baby.
Starting point is 00:14:21 Everybody is making over the world. Everybody's worried about it. AI, sigh. I'm not. Are you worried about it? No. So where's he going to see it at? Well, when the robots, I actually finally, I heard it on the news this morning, which I didn't turn the news on.
Starting point is 00:14:38 It just happened to be on. That's what they're worried about, that the computers are going to train the robots to build more robots. And I'm like, y'all, this is a movie. This is not real life. Do you want to play a game? No, once it started, it started. That's why now the whole thing is like, do we slow down? They did something.
Starting point is 00:14:57 They turn it out of loose. And it went and overtook another company. But I'm saying a well-placed kill-switch. Exploding device. Nope. Doesn't destroy the robots? They're not good.
Starting point is 00:15:12 They don't have those. What do you mean? The robots are building themselves. But if you got nobody to build, what's going to build it? The robots. There it is. I'm talking about the robots being nobody. If you...
Starting point is 00:15:25 The robots are building the robots. Yeah, just blow them up. You can't blow them up. They built the robots. Why can't you blow them up? Oh, you can blow them up. Oh, you can blow them up. Just drop a bomb.
Starting point is 00:15:34 You can always blow something up. Hey. Just drop a bomb. Just pull a gap man and drop a bomb. Ask the president. Ask the president. The cap man. Can blow it be blown up.
Starting point is 00:15:47 Like. Who, Carter? Huh? Oh, the actual president. No, the actual president. Donald J. Trump. Yeah, I just. He knows all about explosives.
Starting point is 00:15:56 That's what the gap ban said. That was a good song. Pop a bomb with me, baby. I mean, like, it just seems like there's an easy fix. Now, once it's, I mean, go watch the movie. Yeah. Well, what happens when I? We all die, and there ain't nobody to build the robots.
Starting point is 00:16:16 The robots keep building themselves. They ain't got enough sense to do that. That's the problem that we've made them with too much sense. That's a bunch of bull crap. I'm with you, but it'll be a matter of time before the robots. hate each other and then they'll snuff each other out. So like, you just get out of their way. I mean, they'll be like, yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:34 What would be left? What? The cockroaches? And the rats. It'd be hard to kill a rat. Do you all remember the movie War Games? Do you want to play a game? No.
Starting point is 00:16:47 Okay, so. I'm sure Hunter does, though. I'm sure this came out. Do you Hunter? Okay, yeah. Hunter, you know the 1983, Thriller, Sci-Fi, PG-Classic War Games? That's it. The robots didn't know.
Starting point is 00:16:59 The only way to play is not to play. That's what scared them on AI. Matthew Bryant. There's a movie coming out. It's been a hundred movies. It's about AI. That's what scared them. That's why everybody's having a freak out right now.
Starting point is 00:17:14 Yeah. Wow. So I says blow them up. Well, we're fast approaching Wally status. That's where I'm at. Do you all want to hear a conspiracy theory? Yeah, sure. Yes, the Lord.
Starting point is 00:17:24 So. I'm in. After the, after the. the AI scare the other day. I saw yesterday. What was the scare? The anthropic said. Oh, that guy that was just been like,
Starting point is 00:17:34 hey, I need attention because I lost my job. Well, yeah. So he said, like, it's a 10% chance. Yeah. It could kill us all within 10 years. Oh, well. And then all the companies got banned together the other day and was like, hey, we're going to slow it down.
Starting point is 00:17:48 The conspiracy theories I saw is that the AI bubble is about to pop. So they're just trying to tell everyone that, oh AI is rapidly getting better and we need to slow down so that way the stock market doesn't crash where's the conspiracy what bubble the earth is still around AI bubble everyone
Starting point is 00:18:09 yeah it was called the AI bubble because everyone what happens when it pops I'm with the I'm with the device everyone stops funding AI you can't be scared of AI you can only be scared of AI
Starting point is 00:18:20 no America hey America I shouldn't be scared of nothing okay because you know one thing we should be a friend we're the one that came up with it all right for crying out loud why are you going to be scared or something you come up with
Starting point is 00:18:37 because you'll whimp it seems like you could just unplug it no no no they plug themselves back in no you're being too logical about this you have to remove all logic no you're just like you could unfluck
Starting point is 00:18:54 power down you're forgetting the Power down. The first logical step of this discussion. What? Who built all this stuff? We did, Jack. If we built it, we can stop it. Amen.
Starting point is 00:19:09 And if you build it, they will. They will come. They will return. They will return. They like MacArthur. I'm coming wading across the beach, boys. I'm back. Who?
Starting point is 00:19:20 MacArthur. General. That's what he told him when he left the Philippines. I shall return. and he did. And when he came back, he come back kicking butt. He had bubble gum and one pocket. He had bubble gum and he had one out of it.
Starting point is 00:19:39 And all he had left was kicking his tail. Oh, that's the guy that said he was going to kick butt and chew bubble gum. And then it turns out he was out of bubble gum. But with all of this, like, here's, you'll love this. with all this what's going on in the news today what you know what you what do you think i think about it it ain't well about the human race as a whole you think we're all stupid idiots no uh well i actually think and i really
Starting point is 00:20:11 this this calm one hey the news was okay they shot charlie killed him okay for they didn't like him talking i don't like what he said well They made a statue of him, and then they desecrated the statue. They blew red paint all over and all this junk. When I thought about that, I said, you know, I said, the human race is sick, and they've let it go so long, then it's turned in the gangrene and they're rotting from within. Didn't have gangrene on my list of topics today, got to be honest. What I think about the human race is you're rotting from the inside out.
Starting point is 00:20:55 Isn't gangrene what the pirates got? What's the, what's the cure there? What's the antibiotic, if you will? The gangrene? Well, hey, we have it, but they don't believe it. Jesus. Jesus.
Starting point is 00:21:08 I'm just trying to feel it. And that's another thing they're sick, okay, because, hey, here's a man, okay, that loves you more than you can even comprehend. Yeah. And then you walk away, you turn your back and walk away from him. Yeah. When he's offered you. A way out.
Starting point is 00:21:27 A way out and made you cold air with everything he has. Yeah. Oh, hey, in my book, your two things. Not only are you stupid. There you go, J.D. You're not going to pay stupid and you're ignorant. Nailed it. J.D., you nailed it.
Starting point is 00:21:45 Okay, because, hey, here's a person that's offering you everything. and you like an idiot turn around and walk away from it. It's fall. October's here. Routines are going to get tested. Both seasons opening. Duck season's coming.

Starting point is 00:23:44 I've watched it a hundred-dye. Oh, when you've got new talent? Young Carter's got a new talent. I just had to play it on my phone. I don't think I have it on the computer. Carter did something Oh, Carter has done something Yeah, you're going to like this
Starting point is 00:23:57 As the musician Hold on, hold on, I'm going to like this I'm going to send it in my computer real quick The Prez is flexing his muscles Oh yeah, because he, well, you know, It's hard to find where you fit in in junior high And so he's fresh into middle school And so they send all these flyers home

Starting point is 00:24:40 Here we go. And just so everyone listen, it's clear, he's only the bump. Not the bump, he is just the bump. He's got it down, though. The other one is the one in the gym. That was the great one. Which one's in the gym? Where he's, you send it to me from like assembly?
Starting point is 00:24:57 Like, it's like pepper alley. Pepper All right. Pepper Alley day or whatever. Yeah, that one was. Oh, yeah. He's a, I mean, he's a fool boy part of the drum line, man. Oh, it was just great watching him. I am watching the symbol guy too, the symbol kids.
Starting point is 00:25:09 Symbol kid's fun. Yeah. Symbol could. If you tote the symbols in a drum line, you're having a better time than everybody else. Well, so I asked why Symbol kid decided to be symbol kid. didn't really have the drum part down, so he decided to be the simple kid. Okay.
Starting point is 00:25:22 But I really like the symbol kid. Yeah. His mom makes great enchiladas. Most people don't realize, okay, who's the most important in the band? Who is it? The time. The drummer.
Starting point is 00:25:33 Drummer. He keeps the rhythm, and hey, there's a thousand of them. Well, there's only five at this school. Okay. No. I don't hear that five, crap. It's a small school, man. I don't hear that crap.
Starting point is 00:25:46 I'm just telling you how many kids are on. thousands of speed that he can play the song that oh i thought you're saying thousands oh here it is no the rhythm of it yeah watch my man look at him hey that's the left i'm gonna up top of him get out boom boom boom boom oh and then he watched the symbol kid he looks like he's having a good time too wow hey get on that anyway that's our new thing that we're into we're we're we're part of the drum line, which is interesting because I've never, you know, played the drums. But I do have my friend Russell.
Starting point is 00:26:24 He's going to show up in hell. Have he played anything? Me? Yeah, me either. Call of Duty. That terrifies me if one of my kids says. Well, no, no. I want to join the bag because I'm like, I can help you with a nutball, but that's about it.
Starting point is 00:26:36 So here's the problem, though. That's the stint. So we show up to this game and I'm just going to be honest. We walked up. The other band was there, and I said, we're about to get torched. on the band world. On the band. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:52 Like, they're going to win a football game. They had some moves. They were sitting there warming up. They had a full band. We had five kids. Our kids were all, let's just face it, a bunch of white kids with no rhythm.
Starting point is 00:27:03 And we got, they started playing across the way. I was like, y'all lost this. That's what I told the Seminole engine. They asked me to join the band. I said, I ain't got any rhythm boys. They said, hey, you'll be a lot. But we're getting there.
Starting point is 00:27:15 Does Carter like it? Oh, yeah. He loves it. Well, he gets. be part of something. He feels like he's part of the football team too. Awesome. It's the first time I've ever got him to watch a football game.
Starting point is 00:27:25 And it's one that included a running clock with eight minutes left in the second quarter. Yeah, y'all speed that up. Yeah, we'll whip that team. I'll tell you what, don't stop this one. But yeah, I get to, so now I go to football games to watch the drumline. There you go. Who would have thought? There you go.
Starting point is 00:27:41 Hey, I love it. We never know what you're in for as a parent. Oh, no. And he may get tired of it in a month. You don't know. With him? It's either all in or all out. Yeah, it'll be obsessive or, yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:53 But I'm thinking that ship is sailed. Next year I'm going to have, I can bring Ben's into the drumline fault. I'm thinking about really going for this drumline thing. Well, you got to be careful. And we watched Nick Cannon after the football game. Watch the movie. Yeah. I was like, let me show you a little something here.
Starting point is 00:28:07 And then it went from boom, boom, boom, boom. I was like, that's where we got to get to. How do you feel about that? Oh, he's in. He's in? He hadn't practiced yet, so. What drum is that he's played? Is that like snare drum?
Starting point is 00:28:22 He told me its name is Jeremy. Oh. I don't know. Big Pearl Jam fan? I don't know. He's like, oh, it's Jeremy the snare drum. Oh, Jeremy the snare drum. And then if we, I told him we need to buy one for the house.
Starting point is 00:28:37 He had a name for that one, too. Very regular name, like Steve or something. But, but, JD, don't force, don't force your kids to do. the, you know, play the instruments because from experience, we force my oldest Bryson to play the piano and take lessons and do all the stuff and he hates it and he won't play anything.
Starting point is 00:28:59 The other two, no, we didn't do anything with him and they're both very musically inclined. Well, Bryce can't play the piano? Yeah, but he don't like it because we forced him to. If I was going to force my kids to do something, it would not be the drumline, sir. Yeah. We would join the basketball team or something,
Starting point is 00:29:15 something that I did. Not that you have a little experience They're not interested I'm into two things The drum line And practicing for the Little Mermaid trial I'm trying to think of it He's an actor
Starting point is 00:29:25 But he's also he plays the drums And he's very good at it Is it Billy Bob Thornton? Will Farrell Huh? He's also Will Ferrell happens to be The lead drummer
Starting point is 00:29:38 for the Red Hot Chili people too No it ain't him It ain't Farrell That's not true That's 100% What's the show was it on side I don't even remember. I just, when he sat down behind the set of drums and played it.
Starting point is 00:29:53 Are you talking about whiplash? It just, it went crazy. Hmm. Because he wouldn't figure this guy to have any kind of. But back in the day, like the snare drum was on the battlefield, right? Like, that's the one that. Oh, yeah, yeah. You want to talk about a gar.
Starting point is 00:30:09 Back in the day. Hey, welcome to war. We're going to have you play the drum. No, no, give me a weapon. Let me take the 50 cow I'll bring it back I'll bring it back They legitimately had some old boy
Starting point is 00:30:24 Just that's what I'm saying He just walked out there I guess he's leading the march You want to know what happened? That's why we kicked the British butts in 1776 They were over there drumming We were taking Pop shots out of trees
Starting point is 00:30:37 Hey you don't realize how important music is in war Tell me about it Is that why y'all listen to Fortunate Sun on helicopter? No, no, no. That's why, hey, every time them choppers get off, and blouse speakers will blare and some music. Yeah. When they went in, they went in with music and kicking,
Starting point is 00:30:58 but. But no drummer. Oh, yeah, they had drums in them. No, I'm saying, like, no actual. No, no, you don't want to. When that get weeded out? Whenever we kick the British butt, they're like, I don't give while we keep getting shot in that.
Starting point is 00:31:13 Well, they're always at the Civil War reenactments, right? Oh, that's true. But can we win the Revolutionary War by just taking pop shots? Anytime there's a big, if you watch a Mel Gibson movie. Oh, you got the band. You got the band lead. Yeah, the band goes down first. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:32 And the flag carrier. So did the drummers get shot? A lot of them did. Like, that was part of the. That and the flag carrier. Well, that don't say them very sport. They go down first. No, no. Significant.
Starting point is 00:31:46 Ooh. Wow. Learning to read. Why would you shoot a defense lift like a drummer? Because he's getting on your nerves and it's war. No, I would only shoot at the one shooting at me, though. I'm trying to weave the ones that are firing a weapon. But the drummer, so specific drum beats signaled commands like advance, retired, charge, or cease firing.
Starting point is 00:32:05 Ooh. This is in the Civil War. Okay. The role of drummer boys in the American Civil War. Oh, man, and they were kids. But that meant, hey, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that happens to be the requisite of, of, of, of a war. Is that, hey, you have kids. Mm.
Starting point is 00:32:25 Yeah. Young. Interesting. Oh. Yeah, I've never really thought about it till now because of Carter playing the snare drum. I just, I always just assume those guys were like off limits. Like, no, you got to shoot that. Hey, shoot them first so everybody gets confused.
Starting point is 00:32:40 That's another reason, like the veterans. I mean, he's. shoot the drum. Don't shoot the drummer. Who's that good of a shot? Shoot a drummer. You got to think about this. On Washington on the Delaware. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:32:56 We got kids in charge of aircraft, $15 million aircraft. Yeah. Sending them on missions. They listen to Danger Zone a lot. Oh, oh, hi. That is a dangerous job, period. Well, amen, yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:12 Okay. is getting them things landing and taking all. Oh, yeah. And then, hey, changing the bombs out and all this. Yeah, I was just interested when the drummer, I mean, I guess he got weeded out come World War I. We've been traveling a lot. Like here, there, yonder, spending all these times in airports.

Starting point is 00:35:01 All right. Hold on. Hold on. This is tight. This is cool. The story of John Clem. You ready? During a retreat at the Battle of Chickamauga in 18th, we're such an informative. podcast. There you go. In 1863, a Confederate officer on horseback caught up to young John Clem, 12-year-old drummer boy for the other side,
Starting point is 00:35:28 the union. The officer pulled out a revolver and shouted at the boy to surrender. Instead of giving up, 12-year-old turned around with a shawed off musket, shot the officer who turned out to be a Confederate colonel. Oh. A legendary act
Starting point is 00:35:44 earned him the nickname the drummer boy of Chickamauga. And he was promoted to sergeant at the ripe young age of 12. Hey, look at there. Life was tougher in the 1800s. What are you talking about? Did you imagine Carter out there just sawed off muskets? No.
Starting point is 00:36:01 That's what you don't realize. We had kids in Vietnam that went over our privates, and because of their battlefield courage, they come back to Yates. How old were you? Huh? I don't remember. 19, I think. No, no, no, 19.
Starting point is 00:36:22 What, 68, 68? 48 to 98. No, 18. 68, I mean. No. Yeah, right out of 20 years old. 66. 66, I graduated from high school.
Starting point is 00:36:33 And he went to college a couple years. So you were right at 20. Yeah. You were somewhere between 19 and 21. Yeah. That's wild. When you really think about our soldiers. The government says you're a man, but the 21.
Starting point is 00:36:46 Right. I haven't been a man at 21. Hey, that was when you couldn't even make a beer. I'm just saying, I was a mouse. Hey, I could go to war and die, but I can't have a beer? Yeah. Yeah, you get me a rifle. Hold on.
Starting point is 00:37:00 Wait a minute. I was not, I was just a 19-year-old ding-dong. Open that bottle of beer and hand it to me. I'm going to beat the living hell out of you. He's back, boys. Hey, if I can go to war and die, I can drink a beer, Jack. Amen. I don't disagree with that.
Starting point is 00:37:18 I don't disagree with that way of thinking. Yeah. I'm reading all about drummer boys now. Well, we're just going to continue to play We Will Rock you. Probably not going to get in any way. Although if there's a Civil War reenactment anywhere around, I got a 12-year-old who would be in it. What you need to do, you and Carter, y'all need to read some of the Medal of Honor winners
Starting point is 00:37:41 and all that of what they did in combat. It's insane. Oh, I bet it is. No, no, I'm serious. I didn't think about the drum being the way to communicate because there were no radio. Yeah. Radio.
Starting point is 00:37:54 I thought it was just kind of like keeping a vibe. You know? Hey, man, keep our spirits up. They roll one way in his charts. Yeah. Roll another way to retreat. Yeah. That's what weeded out the drums.
Starting point is 00:38:08 Yeah. Radios. It was the same way with the Indians. Remember when we went to that place? Oh, yeah. They taught us what the war chant. Oh, yeah. I heard all that.
Starting point is 00:38:18 Yeah. Well, no, no, because when I was one of the things you didn't want to hear was drumbeat. And you definitely didn't want to hear it when it stopped because when it stopped, they're coming. Yeah, see, I mean, that's, no, I don't want to hear it. Yeah. I mean, just think about that, like, I never, I never thought about the drum being mass communication. Like, talking to all, however many people you had there, how many soldiers you had there. That's like Aldi and Murphy.
Starting point is 00:38:42 I just always thought, you know, I think, da-da-da-da-da-charge. Like, I thought that was, I thought that's what you, I thought that's what you, what you didn't want to hear. I didn't really know what the drummer was like, yippee, we're charging. No, da da da da da da da da,
Starting point is 00:38:53 it was just, unless you know, too charged. That's like Aldi Murphy. He's, he's like, Western. He's a great actor.
Starting point is 00:39:03 But he's also a medal of honor one. I was thinking of Eddie Murphy's brother. Yeah. But he's a little old bitty guy. Yeah. Audie Murphy born June 20th, 19, 24.
Starting point is 00:39:16 Unreal. Every time I think about what he did. The most decorated soldier of American World War II history. Yep. That was a weird sentence that just came out of my mouth. I got chill walks all on me. He received every military combat award for valor available from the United States Army. Wow.
Starting point is 00:39:36 And the French and Belgians gave him some awards. And he signed up when he was too young. Really? Yeah. Interesting. How old was it? It is a house. He was born in 24.
Starting point is 00:39:48 16. I thought he was 16 when he joined the Marines. After Pearl Harbor, he tried to get in. Yeah. And they turned him down. Yep. And then he went and got a fake ID and falsified his birthday by year. I'd be a lot easier back in. Yeah, one don't stop him.
Starting point is 00:40:07 No, let the boy go. Man, life was different when you were born. The doctor came back home. Couldn't remember exactly when I was born, so I was 18. That's what they went with. that's a tiny he talks about that he said hey I'm going to go
Starting point is 00:40:22 I'm going to war yeah whether you like it or not whether you like it or not I'm going to wear this uniform yeah I can be enlisted or I can just go then when you're all because it showed the movie about it now I want to say it's the bottle of the bulge
Starting point is 00:40:35 with the can't remember the general's name that led that but anyway MacArthur no no it was like yeah I can't remember his name But anyway, he was crazy. I give you this.
Starting point is 00:40:50 Your memory never ceases to amazement. Well, no, no, because look, he's... It wasn't Patton, was it? Yeah, that's what was Patton. Patton standing on the ground. Here comes a German fighter pilot. And he's got the machine guns rolling. And their bullets coming all by Patton,
Starting point is 00:41:08 and Patton said, well, there's 45. They're talking about... Baja, be, pia, pia, pah. That's a... That's a... Yeah, that's a... Yeah, that's not a real. Empty the clip.
Starting point is 00:41:17 He was crazy. He emptied it. Jumping seven shots. It was a pretty good show. No, no. No. Yeah, I wouldn't make it back then. I'd make a pretty good drone pilot.
Starting point is 00:41:30 They do that now. Put me in a recliner and give me a PlayStation controller and I'll make things happen. You need to read the Medal of Honor winners what they did when they won that melt. It's insane. Got shot three or four times. It kept going back. dragging wounded to safety. You know, my wife's grandfather was on the Oklahoma
Starting point is 00:41:54 when Pearl Harbor got hit, and he helped a lot of people who were drowning to the shore. And when we went to go see that, we saw all the monuments that they made for all of them. I said, I've actually talked to guys that was in the Navy, and it was at Pearl Harbor when Japan hit it. They was telling stories about their... grabbing guys in the, you know, in the water on fire.
Starting point is 00:42:23 Yeah, because the oil was all over the water. And just grab a guy in his arm come off in your hand. No, I'm serious. Just, you know. Made that one. No, no, because I look at things like that and I says, unreal. It really is.
Starting point is 00:42:43 It's unreal what the human being can accomplish. Yeah. when he has to. Yeah. Just insane. Yeah, I wouldn't make it. No. Thanks to everybody that does so.
Starting point is 00:42:56 No, no, because I was talking when I had the honor of being with the seals, with black ops and with our elite warriors in Canada and talking to them, they treated me as one of them. Yeah. And I said, guys, I appreciate it, but no. We're on the same team, but y'all played a different game. I said, yeah. I said, y'all, y'all, no, I appreciate the respect you, sure of me,
Starting point is 00:43:25 but no, I'm not in the same league as you. It's just different, you know, you were doing something different. It's just, uh. But everybody had a job. Yours was just as important. Well, yeah. Keep everything running. No matter how drunk you were.
Starting point is 00:43:39 To see. Your admission, not my. No. Uh, the thing that comes out the most, is it how much they love this to the United States of America. Amen, buddy. That's right. That's why people joined after all these major events, people join the military.
Starting point is 00:43:57 And when you run up on somebody that loves it enough to say, yeah, yeah, I know I might die, but I will do it proudly. Yeah, I'll die for it. And I just, no. Hunter, you had some thought. Grief. Wow. I was wondering if I could steer the conversation into a weird. direction.
Starting point is 00:44:16 Yeah, go ahead. Who, you? I bet. It'd be hard to steer. John David. I was wondering if the schools your kids go to, if they did any sort of 9-11 pep rallies. What do you mean by 9-11 pep rally? I can only tell you what I mean, followed by a story that I heard yesterday.
Starting point is 00:44:46 So, yeah. Every time you go duck up. somebody borrowing something, ain't there? That's it. Always. Shells. Shells, flashlight. Got the shotgun.
Starting point is 00:44:55 You know what you can't borrow, though. Yep. Ducks stamp. Yep. You got to have your own. That's it, boys. You need your own. So all you got to do is head to duck stamp.com and purchase your own federal
Starting point is 00:45:05 duct stamp online. It goes to your phone. It stays in your wallet app. Next spring, you know what to happen? You'll get one in the mail where your collectible stamp so you don't have to worry about losing it or keeping up with it. It makes life easy. And since 1934,

You want to take an even more active, get you too. It doesn't matter. Look, everybody's got to have a federal duck stamp. Get it yourself. Keep it on your phone.
Starting point is 00:45:38 That way you don't have to worry about it. And our friends over at duckstamp.com help you do that. So before opening morning, make one quick stop at duckstamp.com. That's duckstamp.com. You know, we just, we did. We just had the 25th anniversary of 9-11. And I mean, I remember the, you know, you always wondering where were, you know, the song is, where were you?
Starting point is 00:46:02 Yeah, where was you the song out on Jackson Road? Yeah. Where were you when that happened? I was there getting Brittany's car, uh, they had a recall. So, you know, whatever, like had to go in there and get that done. And somebody in there asked me, and I was like, man, it's crazy. Like, I was in American history class, junior year of high school at West Monroe High School. I went straight back to Mr. Warner rolling that TV in there and being like,
Starting point is 00:46:26 Yeah, turn it on and say, now, shut up. Yeah. I mean, when you're in American history and that's what happens is like. Yep. Wow. Okay, man. But, I mean, I did.
Starting point is 00:46:36 I went right back to that moment just 25 years ago. Yeah. And I remembered going right back. I mean, I just remember thinking, is that real? You know, like, because they rolled in them weird little TVs on a car. You know, like a big TV. I was in Phil's house when I seen it and I said, what is in the world? Yeah, what's going on?
Starting point is 00:47:01 And then the second plane hit. And I went, you gotta be kidding me. This is real. Yeah, this is really happening. This is happening right now live on that stupid TV. Yeah. Yeah, I remember watching them go down. And I was like, joking.
Starting point is 00:47:17 Well, that's what made me bad because there was a couple people the other day. that when they was reading the names of those that gave their lives that day, they was giggling. And if I'd have been there, I'd have knocked both of them out with a baseball bat. I'm serious. I'd have hit both of them in the head and knock them out. I mean, I'm with you. That'll do, Hunter.
Starting point is 00:47:42 I'll get you on your knees where you should be, Jack. Go ahead, Hunter. Was it at you upside to head with his baseball bat? So my girlfriend's niece, she, we all hung out the other day. She said that they did a pep rally where they had like games and activities and just weird stuff like that.
Starting point is 00:48:01 And she was like, yeah, I won all these like games and activities at the 9-11 pep rally at my school today. And I was like, that's the weirdest sentence I think I've ever heard from a 10-year-old is I won a game at the 9-11 pep rally. So I was just curious if that's like...
Starting point is 00:48:15 I believe it was Friday. So I believe there was a pep rally for the football game at my kid's school. But I don't believe they... I don't think the intention was probably ever to be a celebration. I bet it was more of a remembrance because, like, you look at all the college... Somebody said something about celebrating 9-11, and Carter goes, whoa, whoa, whoa, we don't celebrate that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:37 Carter said that. I was like, that's right. We remember it. Well, that's what, I mean... Can we celebrate the heroes of that day? Obviously, we all love sports in here. But if you watched them this weekend, there was some sort of remembrance or... dedication to those who served in everything, right?
Starting point is 00:48:54 Absolutely. I mean, there were either American flags on helmets, on jerseys, like even the New York football giants last night, like, which hits a lot closer to home for a lot of those guys on those sidelines, not the ones today, but like the people serving, had the NYPD and the FDNY stuff on. Here's what's crazy, though, because we live in this world now. Because y'all talk about watching it on TV.
Starting point is 00:49:19 I was too young. I was in seventh grade. Yeah, they didn't will. They didn't will, they didn't will a TV card into the seventh graders. I was in Bible class, Coach Fitch you could take you to the room. Oh, yeah. And he said, something's happened, and he left. Yeah, he go.
Starting point is 00:49:36 And we all just sat in the room for waiting to hear more news. Get to the next class, they tell us some more. Get to the next class, they kind of fill us in. And I didn't really, I was like. Well, at seven, you can't even really comprehend. No, I was in seventh grade. I was Carter's age. There you go.
Starting point is 00:49:50 So I get home and I was like, Mom, what happened? Yeah, what happened to do? Like, everybody's freaking out. And she goes, oh, you need to go watch it. And so I get on the dial-up internet and I just sat there. And for the rest of the night, I was sitting there watching all the coverage. And I was like, holy moly. And it, you know, it screw a seventh grader up a little bit because you're like,
Starting point is 00:50:09 what in the world is happening? It didn't do really good things for a junior in high school because you're like. But now we live in the world. I know a ton of people who's like, where were you and they're like wasn't born yeah yeah oh yeah 25 years later man there's a whole generation there's a he said that about hey that's it's been 25 years how old are you thousands of babies have been born i was one then yeah so you have zero recollection of anything happening like and as you should not yeah but it's crazy because i've seen some stuff on the
Starting point is 00:50:42 internet it's like i saw one person say man the people older than us treat this as like some major and I was like well then we're doing our part yeah because we said never for them it was just like i was in american history and learning about war war two which i wasn't a part of and wouldn't here for but them it's that same it's crazy we need to know the dates the time we didn't know that it was united flight whatever and yeah you know all that kind of stuff to pass the test and then moving on you know two planes took your tires down but the third one went after the pentagon yeah and yet except hey it's this is all right this is all right this is all right this is all right this is all right on that plane stood up and said,
Starting point is 00:51:18 you ain't going to take this one where you're going to take it. Let's roll. We're going to take it over. Imagine about them guys, just saying. I watched that movie. It's pretty content. That's the thing that, hey, citizens said, no, I've had enough of this BS.
Starting point is 00:51:33 Yeah. Let's roll, boys. Which we all like to think we do the same thing and given the situation. Yeah, I put myself in that position and I think I would do it. Yeah, I mean, I think you'd try. Oh, if you're going to go out.
Starting point is 00:51:46 You know, but it took a band of them to do it. It wasn't a singular. Well, and they had more information than the first couple. I mean, yeah. Yeah. People on that first. That was never a thought in anybody's mind. No, they just zipping right along.
Starting point is 00:51:59 They were like, what's happening? Yeah. So it's crazy looking at that. I mean, even then, though, commercial air travel was still. Well, that's one of the things. I mean, in the grand scheme of things, like commercial air travel in 2001. So I was on the left side of the plane smoking cigarette. So, yeah.
Starting point is 00:52:16 No, no. Here's what makes me mad about, mad, mad about this. Okay. And especially when I look at the TV and they say, okay, let's abolish, let's get rid of our policemen and all that. Guys, you're being stupid. If you get rid of your police, chaos. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:52:38 Anarchy. You know? And I said, hey, that's why, you know, what you're doing right now is so stupid. It ain't even funny. Yeah. If you get rid of them, a lot of people come to your house and get rid of you. Yeah. Oh, then everybody just bands together for something else.
Starting point is 00:52:58 But there are some positive things that, I mean, not anything was positive about that day, but I like how the country came back together, you know, and people started waving their flags again. I'll never get it. People are being nice about George Bush again right now, and I enjoy that. Because that dude had a hard job. Oh, he did. Yeah, when they told him about it.
Starting point is 00:53:16 You're going to fool me again. Dubby got put in a spot. Yeah, that was, yeah. Fould me once. He had some quotes. You ain't go fool me twice. Whenever he got up there and said, and whoever knocked these buildings down,
Starting point is 00:53:28 going to hear all of us soon, I still get like. Yeah. Yeah, imagine it being handed that job. Go set, here's a camera, here's a script, go settle everybody down. He said, I'm going to Barksdale, boys. Yeah, yeah, he came here.
Starting point is 00:53:40 Yeah. Crazy. Wild times, man. And it's crazy. Yeah, I mean, it's crazy. Yeah, I mean, it's crazy to think that there's a full generation of people in between when that happened and right now for a bunch of guys that watched it happen. That's just wild to think. They're too young to know.
Starting point is 00:53:59 Yeah, they wouldn't know. And unless they teach it in the schools, they'll never know. And unfortunately for them, even, I don't know that they've ever seen everybody come together for a common thing. Like, you know, because, I mean, praise God, there hasn't been another. incident. Oh, no, no. Right? Like, I'm not trying to say,
Starting point is 00:54:18 hey, yeah, let's do one, let's do it again, you know, run it back. It's available, though. Oh. That's the thing. It's always there. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:54:27 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So. You're right. Oh, yeah, like you're saying, okay, well, who's president?
Starting point is 00:54:34 What's he going to do? What's you going to do? Yeah. What are you going to do about? How are you going to handle this? Yeah. That's wild. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:54:42 Well, I didn't think we were going to go there today with the drums. Hey, if you bring up Carter, we're going to get down to some American history, whether we like it or not. Yeah, I had no clue, but. I'm not going to tell that story. Hell it. Hey. Ah, good, no, that's a funny way. No, we're about there, huh?
Starting point is 00:55:00 Close enough. Yeah. Let's wrap her up. Wrap her up. That's you, buddy. Hold on, Johnny Dee. I do want you to show that Cy Cleaning Doves. Oh, yeah, yeah.

Starting point is 00:55:22 No. I'm watching. Oh, there's a hundred people picking doves and where's Sa? And Sae. And Sae just sitting in the, I'm watching. There's Colonel Sy, right? Colonel Sy, right? Colonel Sy, Cey, clean them doves, boys.
Starting point is 00:55:35 Clean them doves. Well, here's the deal. We talked about something today. And Sai yell, we ain't afraid of nothing, right? That's what you said. Hi. Yeah. He ain't afraid of nothing
