Welcome to games with names. Today we're going to catch up on some NFL news around the league and talk some old OTAs, mini camps and what we do in the old off season. But before we get into that, we got to break down A.J. Brown train. Oh, big one. Big one. I mean, it's been a while when we haven't talked about it. We haven't had a take out there.

Let's get into this thing. Let's get into it. Let's get in. It finally happened. I mean, holy smokes. Didn't we all say it was going to happen June 1? We knew it was going to happen. We're delaying the inevitable.

when it finally happened, it felt like a weight was lifted. Oh, my gosh, unbelievable. First off, Jules, what were your initial thoughts? My initial thoughts were the Patriots have a big, it was a big boy move. This is a big boy move. And it also tells me that they think they're close. I mean, look, they were in the Super Bowl last year. But like, you know, you surround these types of, you surround Drake May with these

types of weapons, like that's a step in the right direction. We haven't had this kind of excitement since they brought Rainy Moss. Legit, bro. You know what I mean? If you think about it, I think it opens up their offense. I'm excited to see. I mean, A.J. Brown, he's in his prime. He's 29 years old.

I mean, he's got something to prove. Very similar to dig situation last year where he's coming into this thing pissed off where people are thinking he's not him. Now, granted, you know, Diggs was coming off that ACL had a very productive year with 80 plus catches and six touchdowns. Like he was a factor and he gave that room an attitude. Imagine what that room feels like when you got A.J. Brown coming in. We're sitting up straight.

I mean, this guy in his first seasons, 11 touchdown, seven's touching, seven touchdown, seven touchdown, 17 yards a catch, 13, 7 a catch, 12, 9 a catch, 16, 1 a catch. easy. This is, this is going to open up that offense. But it gives them a lot of versatility too, because look, you get into the big boy personnel groups with two tight ends and you got two receivers, you still have AJ Brown. You get to manipulate the, you know, the coverage. You get those simpler coverages. You could give one-on-one routes with him.

You know, if they can somehow keep age, or they can, if they can somehow keep booty, ooh, that'd be nice. And booty. can keep the mindset of playing ball and being a team player. Like that, I think that's a big step. Because, I mean, booty bringing, he can still knock off the top of the coverage. I mean, you saw 16 and a half yards per catch last year. I mean, that's top five in the league.

It was crazy. Yeah. And only going to get, I mean, you're probably going to get more looks with AJ here. 100%, you'd think. And then, you know, AJ being paired up with Josh McDaniels. Oh, oh, baby. It's a match made in heaven.

Randy Moss first year with Josh, 22 touchdowns, what was it? I believe so. The record. Yep, the record. Brandon Marshall first year with Josh. I think he had 110 plus catches. Devante Adams.

Devonty Adams. 180 targets. 100 catches, 1,500. Honestly, my first year being featured with Josh, I had 105 catches and seven touchdowns. You know what I mean? He knows how to get receivers, the ball, you know, and all different types of body types.

What he does. You know what I mean? I'm excited to see how Josh uses AJ. I'm excited to see the growth of Drake May with AJ. And the other receivers in that room, it brings their level of play up. I remember, you know, it brings me back to when we brought in Antonio Brown into our locker room. Everyone, like that week of practice, zero balls touched the ground because everyone had to bring their game up because Antonio was there. Ain't that many balls going around. Clean operation. So if you're going to get an opportunity, you got to make a stand so you get that opportunity in the game. So this could raise everyone's level of play. All boats, baby. What did you, what do you think Josh is doing to get him comfortable

right now? Look, I think AJ Brown, he's what is. Eighth year, seventh year? He's a veteran. He's a number one receiver. He knows what he's got to do. He's heard a lot of football. He's been in a few different systems. I'm sure it's just getting the language right,

getting the formations right, getting the motions right, getting the concepts right. All those little things are probably what they're going over day to day, just trying to get him comfortable so we can see him use. that big explosive body. You know what I mean?

You got you could, he'll be able to use it more when everything settles down, which you're not going to be worried about AJ Brown, this guy. You're not going to be his eighth year. And yeah, and he's excited to be a patriot. That's the cool thing.

Like he grew up a Patriot fan. He might be the biggest Patriots man of all time. He could be. Man Cave rug. The man cave rug? We need one of those. Ro. I mean, we need one of those in the air.

I might put it on loan in the nut house My guy had that as a Philadelphia Eagle though I love it I mean you like who you like I have nine or shit in here Hey got nine or shit Stick with who you're raised with man

I just picture him having like the boys over From the evening back Oh shit put the rug we gotta put the rug Yeah put the rug away We're having company over put the rug on Man It's it's gonna be really fun I think so too

And I keep going back to that quote I think you said it even before this But Josh was saying He plays with such a force like a force. I just love hearing that. He's just a big body that can make contested catches that can run with it after.

50-50 balls. It's just, it's, and, you know, he can run routes. You know, so, I mean, that's all we saw him do last year. They had like three routes and sand and out and this. So like maybe we throw a couple counters in there with Josh and you're going to see a lot more explode. I just like, I like Josh with receivers. me too. Josh knows how to get the ball to guys.

And Drake, I mean, another year in Josh's system being able to get everything operated, the communication for the linemen and the protection. Like, you're going to see, I think we see another jump. I think we see another jump. God bearing, everyone stays healthy. That brings us to some of our other news that was coming out of OTAs. They said they want to weaponize Drake May's mind. What did you make of that quote?

Well, I mean, they want him to take the step to being like a Brady, a Peyton, a Drew Breeze, a Mahomes. That's what they're saying is they want him to be able to be the coach on the field. Get them in the right play every single time and the right protection every single time. Getting them out of bad looks, having that authority to get him out of bad looks, being able to do everything at the line of scrimmage. that's what that weaponizing the mine is. Because we all know he's a weapon as an athlete. Oh, yeah. I mean, led the last year in deep balls.

He's very, very sneaky, fast athletic. Got that Herbert, you know, where he'll take off on you and have a 65-yard run. Don't turn your back. You know, so, like, those are awesome plays. But, like, going a whole game with no MEs, no mishaps, no bad throw. no wrong throws.

Like that is what I think weaponizing his mind. Getting them to that next level, which time on task, that's what happens. That's why this is going to be an even more exciting offseason for Drake May

because he already learned, last year he had to learn the language. It was huge. You got to learn the language of what Josh is preaching, the zero out slot. Now we need to start learning the slang. Now we need to start learning the slang.

We got to start your, the swear words. We got to start, you know, when you learn that new language with your boys and you drop a motherfucker right here and there. And it's like, yeah, in Spanish, or you know what I mean? You know, it's just we got to get some of that slick slang going. Yes, that type you're out in public saying and people next drop is like, are these guys speaking? Are these guys speaking? Is this guy a local? This guy is.

You know, the Spanish correlates with the local Spanish. Yes. You know, the dialects. We got to get them dialects right. I like that. That puts it all under perspective. We're good, bro. Drake just got to get some of them swear words down.

He's just got to get swear words. That's what it's all about this year. No, it's... Building, baby, building. I mean, I'm hyped up here in that weaponizing the mind. That just sounds so good. Yeah, I mean, that means

if they're even bringing that up, that means it's going in that direction. Seriously, yeah. I mean, if that's on the table. And they're putting it out there for, you know, Drake, hey, we know what you are. We need you to get even better.

Would you say that's the one thing if you'd want to see Drake work on this offseason or take a step forward or kind of add to his arsenal would be just like getting all that lingo down and it's just everything like yeah you know late in the season you know it was it got a you know the protection I mean there's so many factors into that but being able to use your mind to solve a problem instead of your athleticism right man we're not getting this guy block what the hell can we do All right, this is what I'm going to do. Hey, we're going to slide the line here and maybe go off on a different tangent to the code.

Hey, fuck it. Hey, yo. You know, that's weaponizing your mind. Slide him. I'm like, get the ball out quick. Hey, hey, pop, pop. Give me a swing. I can't block.

Shit like that. I don't know. Yep. That's kind of what I think weaponizing the mind is. You know, being operationally correct and being able to get out of a problem with the mind. not the legs or a crazy Caleb Williams throw or something. You know what I mean? Putting it all together.

Put it all. Putting it all together. And then some other stories that came out of Patriots camp, the little OTA recap here. Caleb Lomu looked good, playing him all over the line. The rookie. But not in the left tackle spot, right? Specifically, I heard. No, no.

Yeah, everything but I'm thinking kind of putting them everywhere, swing tackle kind of vibes. Yeah, I mean, you could never have too many big boys. Heck no. Especially a first rounder. Never that. I like him. First rounder, no, that's only going to build depth. It's going to sharpen those guys.

I'm excited for that. I was going to say, and he's learning from some vets in there. He's got a young buck like Will Campbell over there to help him out. He's. You get Moses, too. Moses, big time. Moses is, you know, he's got a lot of knowledge and time on this task. Yep.

And you got Vera Tucker in there now as well. Tucker. Another vet to help mold that mind. I'll be sick. I like this. Like you said, can't have, never have enough alignment. Can't have too many. No.

And those, you know, if you have a good swing tackle, it can put you in like those 13 personnel groups where you bring in that tackle for the tight end, the goal lines, the short yardages. It's a weapon. If you have a guy that can have the versatility to be able to go back and forth,

mindset and physical ability. That's huge. You know, so hopefully he develops himself a nice little role. I mean, we're not going to know anything in OTAs about a long. linens. I'm fucking chippers. You know,

that's, this is all about the organized team activities and the off seasons all about getting the minds right. For when we do put on those pads, we can, we don't look like the YMCA club. Not, don't just slap it out there.

You know what I mean? Say no, yeah. Amen, man. So right now, this is all footwork, timing, no contact, you know, knowing where to go, hearing the play, knowing personnel groups, learning the operation of getting a play called in, how much time we have at the line of scrimmage, identifying what the defense is giving us, communicating to our offense, what we're going to do, getting us to the play.

Like, that's what this is all about. This is all about the dance and the flow stuff. This isn't nothing about this is about like real football where you're going to get hit. Right. We're trying to get ourselves. We're, that's all mindless stuff because we know it so well that when we do get to hit, we use the right proper technique and it looks like professional football. Got to walk before you can run out here.

And I like Doug Morone out there coaching these lines. I like that. I mean, I wonder what kind of baloney they got in the stadium for him. Does he go? Is he still doing the baloney? I was going to say he's infamous for that. Whenever I think Doug Maron, I think Bologna. I'm going to go into one of these training camps.

I'm going to ask for the Doug Maron. Well, you're a Bologna guy growing up? My mom liked Bologna. I like Bologna. Myr, too. My mom liked Oscar Meyer Bologna. The classic with mustard chips on the white bread sandwich. American cheese, though. You have to have the most processed cheese possible.

Processed on processed. On processed, if you're having, like, genuine white bread. I mean, then if you're feeling a little frisky, maybe you throw that thing on the old pan. Oh, your little hot dog taste. You got to slice the edges a little bit so it doesn't puff up on you.

Let's go. Other news in there was Christian Gonzalez. The hold in was still working out that contract situation. But get him paid. Get him paid. Come on. Gonzo, best guy, one of the best players on the field in the Super Bowl. Yeah.

They're figuring it out. It sounds. like as of last night, he did buy a new house in the Foxborough area. All right. Then that's good news. We're probably in Foxborough. It's a greater Foxborough. I think somewhere said Walpole.

Is it? Oh, he's in Walpole. That's what, that's what I, the report I saw. I get over to the Adaborough. What kid? Moving on up. We got Alboro money. And then we touched on a little bit earlier.

The wide receiver room is getting a little crowded there. Now with AJ in there, you got some talk that, Booty might be the odd man outer. But as we said, Booty's coming off a 33 catch here, 16.something yards a catch. You got pop in there. Yeah, I don't know if Booty's handling this correctly.

I know. I know. I mean, he had a hell of a four, what do you have, 36 catches? I think it was 33. Let me double shit.

I mean, that that was, that's production, six touchdowns, 800 yards. I think he had 16, 7 a catch. but what round was he drafted in? He was late, I think it's like six or seven.

See, I don't know what the communication is, but if this is on him sitting out, like, that's probably like the last thing you want to do. Yeah, six-rounder at LSU in 2023. Six-rounder because we're dealt with the gambling case. That didn't go anywhere. So, like, what leverage does he have? Is his leverage that he's got 36 catches

that he wants to get traded. I just, I think that, you know, I've been in that situation where you bring someone in, you get your feelings hurt, and, you know, but this is National Football League. There's going to be new players every year,

every year. And, you know, I think, don't, you probably want to be out there. Real. To see where, where you're going to create your role. because, you know, or unless he thinks he wants to get traded and he has not, I don't know. I don't know.

I just probably, I would have handled it a little differently. No, I'm with you. Like he's a, he's a great. And the thing is, he's going to benefit from this. Like, A.J. Brown's going to take all the coverage. Yes. And then you're going to get real one-on-one down the field booty throws all the time. He's going to have more opportunity.

Yes. And, you know, you go into your contract year. you bump it up to 45 catches for a thousand or close to 900 yards, then you go into free agency instead of having all this. You know, so I don't. I'm with you. You know, right now, a lot of receivers are coming out. I know.

What do you, and based on me. And he's a good football player. He's a really good football player. But I just, I probably would have handled it a little differently. I'm with you. You got to be there.

I hate that he wasn't around the team that much during, he came to the, he came to the mandatory. Torries only or something? Yeah, and then I don't think really had any catches the last day or two. It didn't sound like... Yeah, I mean, he hasn't been there. He's not going to have any catches.

The rapport that they've had for the last five weeks, it's just, I don't know. I don't know who's advising them. I like... Yeah, it's weird. Is it his agent? Who's his agent? Let's see who's agent is. Who's his agent?

Yeah, it's going to be Chisholm and Pop and Williams probably battling. Yep. And, you know, depending on booty, I would say those are the guys because you look at Mac. He brings it to Nashville. to the room. He also covers a lot of holes on the team and special teams and blocking.

Blocking. He's got a niche package. Yep. That like Josh probably really loves. I mean, the two, AJ's not, you know, he's going to be the guy. He's the guy. Then you got Dobbs who you just paid some money to.

So he's going to be a guy. You know, and then after that, you're going to have to start fighting to get on the field. Oh, yeah. Because you still have Hunter Henry, who's a pass catcher, who he's going to take targets. So it all depends on how they want to form their team, what kind of team they want to be. And that's what this part of the year is about, putting your team in all the different personnel groups and seeing how they gel together. Seeing if you have a bunch of receivers, let's make a four wide group.

Oh, but if we're not there, we're not there, we're not going to be in the same thing. the four wide group. I know. So I don't know. Maybe it's just, I hope it goes well because he's, if they can have booty in there as well, because he, that speed,

you can't teach that. And he made plays. He made some big plays last year. He's a baller. Yeah. But I mean, not, I don't know sitting out baller.

So, hey, you're, you're playing. and why today, the terminology is going to be a little different because in this personnel group, you're going to be the Y or you're going to be the X or the F or the, you know what I mean? That's what this is for. That's what O.T. Because then we get into training camp where

we got to relearn everything. The fucking train is moving. The train is on the tracks and it don't stop for nobody. Right, brother. Damn right. That was a little bit of the Patriots OTA. I tried that shit when they brought in A.B. What'd you do? It's all bad. stuff. Bill. Look, Joel's gonna make you fucking better. Yeah.

But it did. Oh, man. It bros everyone's level when you bring in, you know, a real, a real baller. You got better in that one week. I got better in that week and a half. It was a fucking flawless. It was flawless practice. Flawless practice.

Which, you know, carried into whatever it did. Couldn't see an Emmy for miles. No, me. that we had Julian Hill season ending ACL. I hate that. Free agent.

Freaking hate it. Yeah. They were talking good about him too, I think. I was really getting hyped up for what he could do for the run game.

Josh, if you get Josh a good pat, like a good blocking tight end, you can get real creative with it in those personal groups. Got fullback in there now too.

Josh loves a fullback. Yeah. Yeah, shout out. It just creates matchups. Yeah, that's what the exciting. That's what we're talking about mind games.

or what would we say? Weaponize the mind. That's what this is, this period is for. Trying those little things. Trying different personnel groups. Seeing how the team, how the quarterback,

how the line all like it. How the running backs adjust to it. You know, protections, not physical, but mental. Let's see it. Let's see us do it right.

Speaking of training camp and minicamp out of TV is. Oh, yeah. We hear, we know it's football is 24-7 these days. Stop. So minicamp OTAs getting a lot more coverage than they did in the past and we're in these things. It's June, but we're still talking football. Jules, for the fans out there, can you pull back the curtain a little bit and take us inside

a typical mini camp? We touched on a little bit earlier, but just kind of what goes down and what are you looking to get out of this? What makes for a successful mini camp OTA session? So minicamp is like an introduction of what training camp is going to be. Right. You've been doing. OTAs, I believe you have 12, 13, 15 OTAs, which is basically kind of very similar to what the

minicamp is. You install 10 plays in the morning. You go out and you drill the 10 plays. You individualize the 10 plays. You come together. You do seven on seven for those 10 plays. And you get into team and you do those 10 plays. And then after practice in OTAs, you go home. In minicamp, it's the same thing. And after practice, you watch that practice and you correct what you did on the field if it was wrong or you highlight good things. I can't even say that. Highlight good things.

It's weird, you know. You highlight the good things. And then you install for the next day what you're going to be doing the next day after practice. So it's a longer day. It's kind of like an introduction to what training camp is going to be. You know, and then, you know, and it's a way to introduce to the new guy on the team, the young guy on the team, how things are kind of done mentally, physically, operationally,

how it's going to be in training camp. Very abridged little baby version. Yep. But it's, it's more mentally taxing than an OTA day. So it's like that introduction. All right. we're going to be here from 8 o'clock till 5. We're going to have, you know, you're going to go through this, the individuals, the walkthroughs.

It's going to be that same kind of day format, baby a bridge version of a training camp. Try to introduce these guys before they have that five, six week break or whatever it is, four and a half week break till training camp, this is what it's going to be like. Because once you get back for training camp, the coaches are are automatically assuming that every guy that we, everything that we did in camp is, that's foundationed. We can pull from that every time. We'll spend the first couple days of camp doing those things to refresh our minds. But now, hey, now we're adding.

We're adding. And who can add? Who can go through the day format of, all right, we installed 10 plays. We went over those 10 plays. We didn't do them well. Did we fix them the very next day? We installed that night after that. All right.

what guys can handle that? You know, that this is an evaluation process. That's what OTAs and mini-camps are. We're evaluating the team. We're evaluating the player. Who can mentally adapt to what we do? Who can physically adapt to what we do? Who has, you know, who can install the play and turn those plays away and then get

another additional plays, but be able to pull two plays from those other plays that we installed. This is all part of the evaluation process of how we build our team. So mini camp is like kind of an introduction to how training camp's going to be very similar to what you've been doing for the last four or five weeks, maybe a little longer at the facility. Get the feet wet. Get in there. Put down a foundation. I'm with you. What did in, as your career evolved, Jones, what did you personally look to get out of one of these? Well, the number one thing is getting out healthy. Always healthy. I mean, we look at Julian Hill. hers is a kid. ACL and non-con.

Like, and there's going to be, they know the numbers of how many guys they expect out of their 90 that are going to get hurt because they have all the data from the last 50 years and or now it's really that they're studying probably the last six years because of the new schedule of, you know, when the player's back. So they,

they adjust to like those periods of times where there's high risk of guys getting hurt and then you see who's there. And then. you know, I think health is number one. You know, early in my career, it was like a form of competition, which it's always a form of competition, but I was trying to make the team.

Right. So, you know, I had to know all my, you know, my plays. I had to know all my personnel groups. I had to know where I had to be in the building at certain special teams, like all that stuff, being operation 100% on just that. You know, and then by the time you get older and you've had a few camps in the same camps, because they're different at different places, you know, by year five, I've heard the same coach joke.

I've heard the same introduction. You know, so it becomes, how do I get myself better? And with that, after every year, you know, as soon as that last game, you guys are eliminated or you win, you know, about a week after you meet with your coaches, you have your exit, you kind of go over a self-scout, you look at all your film, you determine on what you need to get better individually if you're in that position in your career where you sit there, you know, I talk to chatty, oh, right, well, you know, a couple of these routes. What do we, we got to work? Are you got to work the patience at the top of the route on this route?

Hey, let's really work on this offseason, get your foot, you know, to the quarterback on those return routes. That can really be utilized as your route. that kind of stuff. And then you go through your mini camps and your OTAs. And afterwards, you really get to see if all that work that you've been talking about and kind of put in since March, if you're seeing progression in it. So that's what, you know, setting those individual goals, everything's pretty individual about individually.

How do I get to be the best I can possibly be physically, mentally, mentally, operationally for when we put our pads on and we have to go do it for real. So crisp, it's a successful camp. If it was a crisp camp, if you saw progression in what those, those off-season goals you had were, you know, I remember getting to the end line on a red area end cut was something I, you know, instead of getting to that end line, like positioning of those tops of routes. I remember a lot of that.

I remember, you know, in my fourth, fifth year, I took a lot of time and I'm working that, the juke route, you know, really putting your foot in the ground at the quarterback when you're coming out, like sitting there a thousand times and doing that movement, you know, and then seeing it happen in an OTA practice film or in a mini-camp practice film.

That's when you kind of know, if it was a successful camp. But number one thing is staying healthy and just kind of retaining and and mentally picking up the new keys for the year because there's always some kind of new wrinkle the OC brings in after they've been studying for five weeks, six, eight weeks away from, you know, the program or the building. Every coach has something they've been working on. and so really being able to digest that.

So I think health, what your goals were, and just being clean, you know. So then when July comes, you're hitting the ground, running river. So when July comes, that's when the real competition starts. In those six weeks, baby, get that body right. Well, whenever you hear about people like getting out of shape, it's not right now. Usually these guys right now are probably in some of the best shape because, you know, the beginning of the off season phase one, everyone comes back and you condition together,

you lift together. That's like a three week period. Then it goes into like you, you add like a, you get one period a day doing an individual with the coach. So then you go weightlifting, run, and then you have like one period.

And then it rolls into your OTA. So like you've been compounding weeks of running, lifting, you know, And then, you know, by the time camps are done, you're in pretty decent shape. Oh, yeah. Not that much when you got out of shape. But I was always in pretty real good shape right now.

Oh, yeah. You know, and then you have five weeks until training camp. That's when guys get out of shape. Yes. You know, you go from running every four days a week with the team. And you get, you know, you got guys that go home and eat a lot. Barbecue season. It's BB season.

season. Chilling in the yard. Chilling in the yard. And then they come back, you know, five, seven pounds overweight. Oh, boy. You know, it's more of the younger guys that aren't really accustomed to the free time.

And, you know, usually those guys are coming from college. They got this. They got that. There's so many more things in college. You know, becoming a professional athlete, a lot of it is how you deal with your time. You know, and then the guys that figure that out earlier are the guys that play longer.

Time management, compartmentalization, all that, baby. All about that. All that. All right. And we've been pretty Patriots heavy here. A lot to talk about out of Foxborough. But we got a lot of stuff going on around the league.
