I'm kidding. I just want to let you know here in the Nut House, we took a field trip yesterday 315 to the Century City Theater. You guys saw the movie? We went and saw the movie at 315. XL. Just so we get it. We didn't get it.

to see you in iMacs that's fine it's almost too much the first viewing an i'm glad you guys what'd you think it was spectacular wow and the and i we had an over uh over under account i said we would see you seven times way over way over way over always bet the over way over and i couldn't believe you made it to the last boat i save odysseus if you watch it there's a hand i do my famous hand. You get a nice side profile, but I'm the one that grabs him and puts him on the top half of the boat. And then, you know, you can't spoil the movie. It's a 3,000 year old story. He lives and we die. Yeah. But I did make it to the end. Yes. It's unreal. Now, I didn't see, are we allowed to talk about this? I like to imagine the guy being like, no spoilers on the high scene.

No, yeah, of course. Now, we didn't see you in the pig scene. Did you get turned into a pig? Really? You guys didn't see me in the... We were looking for you. We thought it would be a very easy role. Oh, I would say that that's my most identifiable scene. Are you guys serious? Did you see him in the pig scene? I couldn't find him.

And not only am I in the pig scene, I believe, which I thought I was safe on, that I got transformed into a pig, but... Was that you? One of them. One of them. Where they do the... It was, that was wild. Yeah. No CGI in this movie.

No. So, Cyclops, how do we do that? Who was that in there? Bill Irwin, who played Tars and Interstellar, who is like an unbelievable human. And he's an older gentleman. I don't know if Bill's, he's definitely in his 70s, I think. He's the guy. Tars was a, was a man.

Did you know that? No, I thought he was a machine. Well, there was a man inside the machine. So anyways, he was the Cyclops. So part of it was basically a 60-foot puppet, a six-story puppet. I don't know. It was the biggest puppet I've ever seen where there were multiple people that were marionetteing it, really, you know, but on a larger scale. And then I think it was all Bill in a mini-case.

Dude, it's wild what they can do. That is crazy. In a miniature cave. What was the craziest made-to-movie thing that you saw on set? Like, that you're like, how did they do this? Because I'm putting that up there as like one of them, the Odyssey Maker. Okay, well, we, yeah, I would say so. The last Drogonian scene, that is real giants that they flew from all over the world,

guys that were like six foot four or sorry seven foot four six foot four seven foot four and then they had um a bunch of serbians very very small i don't know if you would call them uh the stunt people were super small i don't know what the word is because i don't think they're considered little people but they were under five feet they were under four feet 10 so you wanted three feet so i guess they call it some sort of thing like force perspective. That's the terminology. So you would see it. And it's just all optical illusions.

But that forest was very interesting because that forest, the Cuban forest in Scotland. Scotland's awesome. You would love Scotland. By the way, I'm part of the tartan army. I believe that. I saw you in your kilt.

Yeah. Oh my God. Yes. Full kilt guide now. Full kilt guide. So much airflow. Right. It was a hot,

humid day in Boston, flowing down spectacular. I fully became a killed guy and Rob was wearing a miniskirt. His was a little too short. I mean, it was incredible. You guys went fully in. So to that point, Scotland's incredible.

But this forest, the way the forest has grown or it was planted, you know, there was a lot going on. So I don't know the fine specifics. The trees are all kind of anatomically placed. so it messes with your eyes when you get into that forest.

They enhance it, I think, a little bit in the scene where it kind of closes in on us. But yeah, everything was like a trick. Everything was a trick so that you could see it in camera, which, I mean, I didn't see a blue screen or a green screen or whatever they call it once. except on the lot at the end. The last thing we shot was the boat breaking apart. But the screen behind it, it was a giant wall. They didn't use it because it was, there was so much water and everything was so close and tight.

Like, yeah, there's no CGI that I saw in this movie. Man, it was incredible. I mean, and it was, we went in at 315, came out at like 745. Good time to see it too, by the way. Perfect time to see it. Nice window. Pro moved to see it. It was nice. But it didn't feel like a three-hour movie. Flew by. And that's the sign of a good long movie

is when it doesn't feel long because you're in on the movie the whole time, engaged with the freaking characters, engaged with what's going on. Nolan doing his flashback thing that he does in all his movies. So good. I mean, it was just, it was a freaking awesome, awesome watch. Unbelievable watch. Masculent man watch. Also, you got, you know, you got a little bit of everything in it.

Well, what's interesting, I've seen it twice now. And as manosphere as this movie is, I mean, this is like just men and savagery and people are fighting and it's war. The elegance of a woman, though, though, she's running it. I think the movie is driven by. women. Serce is in control. Athena is in control. Penelope essentially is in control because he's trying to get back to her.

Samantha Morton was absolutely, Circe was in control. She turned us into pigs. It's this incredible balance of this manly testosterone-driven movie that is totally anchored by really, really, really kick-ass women. 1,000 percent. Amen.

And then also, who is the wife the twin wife? Twin wife. So that's Helen of Troy's twin wife who kills. Kills the husband. Agamemnon. Yeah. Agamemnon.

Yeah. Who was played by Benz Safi. All right. Let's get into how did you get this role? How'd you prepare for this role? Why are you in all of Christopher Nolan's movies and you have speaking lines and you're a big time actor now? How?

Well, as of today, I'm an unemployed actor. So, you know. Wait, what? Well, as of today, I'm an unemployed actor. Like, I don't have a job today. Can you take unemployment? No, no. I mean, in the sense that I'll have a job by Friday, I hope. But today, you know, you got to eat what you kill in this business. We don't get to sign like five-year deals that are totally guaranteed. Unless you're Sandler. Unless, well, yeah, at a certain point, you get to where the big boys are, the big girls are, and you're locked in. You don't have to worry about it. John Papsidara, who is Chris's casting director. The reason that I know John,

everything is so wild and it's all connected. I said I'll never do dancing with the stars, okay? And then two years after I retired, I was like, oh, maybe I'll do it. Okay. John's wife, Valerie, is, she's like one of the producers of Dancing with the Stars. So I make a connection with Valerie. All right. Later down the road a year, maybe two years later, because Pete Berg put me in Patriot Patriots Day. Yes. Bobberg.

I said. Boston Bomber. Yeah, Boston Bombers. I said, I want to act. Oh, my God. I remember Valerie Papsidara's husband as a casting director. It's at a certain point when I was ready. I came out to L.A. and I met with John.

he was like, you're not ready. I thought I was ready. I went back and kind of figured it out an acting school in New York, this incredible woman, Kelly Kimball, finally came back to John, and he's the guy that's sort of been championing me and kind of really looking out for me, I think, in different stops. Like, what's the right fit? How are you going to handle this? If you handle it, then you can get rewarded with the next step. And then obviously, say whatever I've done with Chris, I just try and stay out of Chris's way. I try and hide from the camera for the most part. I don't want to, I don't want to, I don't want to block or hog or try and fight for a shot, which is sort of the fun of it on a movie like this because there's so many,

there's a bunch of us and we're all like, you know, nothing's totally planned. Like you have a lot of, it's not like running a route. Yeah. And Troy, like, you have an idea of your vicinity based on where the camera is, but there's no set route. Well, that's kind of like a Patriots offense. Is that how you guys ran it? I mean, it's all variable. It's all variable. Really? The route changes to the coverage and the quarterback and the receiver have to be on the same page. So if it's cover five, it could be a completely different route than cover three, then cover four, then man. So it changes. It changes. And the receiver. It And how would you communicate that in the huddle?

No, we both see the same look. And you just know. And we know. If that's the coverage, then we- Through practice and repetition, probably like you guys had to do for this set. You guys practice, you walk through it. And then when game time comes,

there could be a couple variables. Totally. But you still got to execute. Wow. Do people know that about the Patriots offense? Yeah, that's one of the things. It's different than the West Coast offense, which is very,

you know, you go here. It's very locked in. Locked in. You run one route, five steps, this. And if that's not open, he goes here. If that's not open, he goes there. progression read, they say. Now, wouldn't it be much tougher to play against Patriot offense versus West Coast? Yeah, but it's hard because then you're really dependent on the quarterback.

The quarterback has to know everything. He has to be able to set the offensive line, know what the defense line is doing, see what the concepts are, being able to change the concepts. Everything's relied on the quarterback. When you get to these West Coast offenses, you can plug a good quarterback in, and everything's relying on the coach and how he calls the plays. Interesting.

So great director, great quarterback. Well, you got to be one of the greats to be able to really do it the right way. Without a doubt, just like you have to be one of the greats to be able to go out and be in the Odyssey. Yeah. well Chris kind of sets shots like that I mean nothing is like truly set and he trusts us to kind of figure it out so anyways so he's kind of like a bellichick figure on set where everyone's kind of scared of him oh yeah yeah yeah terrified does a great comparison because how could you give it another comparison I mean I mean you know but also stays out of your like he's not interested in bothering you he's interested in you performing your best yes Yeah. And it changes for each guy. Yeah. Yeah. Definitely. I mean. And he's not going to pat you on the ass for something that you're supposed to do. No, no, no, no, no. But when you do get a pat on the ass, it makes your life.

Yeah. I mean, one or two, a movie. A that boy. And very subtle. Yeah, like, like nice choice. Maybe out of the out of the mass confusion, like, hey, that was good. Yeah, that's. And by the. way, that's all, I don't need it, but obviously we like it. Yeah. We don't need any more additional praise. I think that's what's interesting about, I mean, you have a movie coming out. I don't know if we're allowed to talk about yet, are we? How long were you guys together? On and off for six months, because they gave us a couple of breaks where we flew home, which is unheard of, you know, to go shoot a movie somewhere, rap, come home, rest, and then go back out and shoot the rest of the movie.

Did you have to continue to train and shit, though? Yeah, it was three week breaks. So honestly, coming home the first couple of days, you were just like, I'm not comparing it to anything like a deployment, but it's like the end of the playoffs. you're just

you're not really with everyone takes you a minute to acclimate yourself especially when you come from I mean Morocco back to L.A. is like we were in Wazazat Morocco which is up over the Atlas Mountain. I mean that place is they shot

Lawrence of Arabia there. It's deep. You're deep. So yeah, it was incredible to get breaks and then sort of be able to kind of look back and go like what you did that on that run. Reflect. Yeah. And how am I going to tighten my game up? Yeah.

What am I going to come back with so I don't have the same shit? So when you got the call, who gave you the call that you were going to be in the movie? First of all, I forgot all my lines in the audition. Oh, my God. Yeah, just totally. So I did one audition. Yeah. But I didn't audition for that show for that Kim Kaysen.

Oh, the Hulu show. The Hulu show. Yeah, Kevin Connolly was in and played a lawyer. I was going to be her companion. Oh, wow. The boyfriend football player. I was auditioning for that. Right.

And my first ever auditioned, I didn't even know what the fuck I was doing. Yeah. You know, I prepared a little for it. But like, they gave me some lines. and then the next day they called me and I had to do it on Zoom. Oh, oh, God. And I'm doing an audition.

Which is essentially a live audition. It's a live audition. Yeah. And I'm doing a sex scene that is supposed to be Kim Kay or whatever, but it's some dude. So I have to do it to him. Yeah, he's the reader.

The reader. Right. And I fully bombed it. Fully bombed it, never got a call back. And that was like, oh, man, I'm probably never going to be acted. They're very difficult.

And still, I am not great at them live in person because, like, that one was wild. I was in the waiting room and there were two very, very well-known actresses. I call them actors because I like to call them actors because they are actors. But there were two actresses, two female actors in the waiting room that everyone in this room would know. and I was just like, what the fuck is going on? This is like crazy. Why did I come here when the crossover was happening? Like, they should have just brought me in when all the dudes were in here.

So I went in and I just forgot everything. And then Chris and John, the casting director, made fun of the shirt I was wearing and told me to go home. And then I got the call like a couple days later. They said, I wore like a... What shirt did you? We didn't know what movie this was, right? We had dummy sides. So it was on the side of an ice mountain holding onto a cliff because the cliff was falling.

And I was yelling at somebody, some instructions up above. So I wore like a kind of a tight white henley, like a thermal. You know what I mean? Yeah, I know. But I guess it was really white and it was probably too tight. So I just, I don't think I looked cool. But maybe you got it because you were showing you're jacked. You had to be jacked for the role.

Well, that was the funny thing. They made a comment. It was sort of like, oh, you know, could you got that shirt tighter to show your muscles? Or are the muscles that big sort of thing? So whatever. It was fine and it worked out. But I remember the fires. It was the day the fires started to, by the way.

Oh, God. So it was early in the day. So nobody really knew what was going on. But like that night, we were in the car driving to Palm Springs. And I was, I just, my life was over.

I was like, I bombed that fucking audition today. Like, like, like, it's like Leo in once upon time in Hollywood when he goes into the trailer and screams at himself. I was,

I'm done. You loser. What did you just do? You did not prepare enough. But like, I don't know. No, it's different than sports because sports we can react physically. Like if you forget the route, you're also more comfortable in that environment.

Right. But we have the ability to kind of just override the system. I'm just going to go hard and I'm going to take this guy and I'm going to put them. My shoulder's going to go right through them. Yeah. When all else fails, right? In the room, you're like, where am I? What is the scene?

What whine do I say when they say? that line. It's just, it's tough. It's very tough, which is why I think all the greats and the great moments happen from improvisation and just like, just the vibe and feeling it and being kind of, it's like a great tennis match, but it also is a little bit in slow mo. So you can kind of see it coming. It's like seeing a play happen before it happens. It's like deja vu. Take it. Yeah. Yeah, you got to just take that moment. Now, is Nolan a director that hates when you do a little, uh, your own thing? As long as it works. There's some directors that hate it, though. You gotta go line to line.

He's got to have some athleticism. No, no, he is. Of course. He can move. He can move. So he's very elusive. And I would just, you know, there was always a little bit of back and forth with me and him.

But he's, he's great. He seems fun. Tom's great. Who's good guy? Who's Bernthal? Oh, my God. John Bernthal. What a legend.

Yeah. linebackers. Honestly, I think John's more of a big tight end. What was he tight end? Well, because he tries to, he comes in hot, you know. He's kind of like alignment and a skill guide together. Yeah, because he can finish. He can finish.

And he can be very vulnerable and sort of like. He can be in the run game and the past game. Is that, that's a, yes. Well, tight end is like a lineman and a receiver put together. Because they block? Yeah, so sometimes they're at the point of blocking. Right. But also sometimes they're at the point of a pass play.

And then they got to soften the hands up. Soften the hands up. Wow. You got to be tough because you've got to be able to take on big ass D. Lyman. Okay. So who's the, so that's Bernthal. I don't know. Is that gronk?

I mean, that's the greatest of all time. Is he the greatest? At both. Like at a traditional, like, tight end. Not like a pass catching tight end. Not just a run blocking. A guy that does both at an elite, level is is gronk yeah then i guess that's what uh yeah i mean john's john's good and for actors and

sets he's big he's definitely what's that mean he's much bigger than than everyone like he's bigger than me yeah you know taller he's got a he's thick he's got a stack on him yeah tiny little waist big shoulders you ever see him yeah i did his show like four years ago he's awesome dude his daughter does is a world champion jiu-jitsu girl at like nine years old that i didn't know yeah she's he's he's really involved with his children's like sports yeah he coached the basketball team he tell us all because he wasn't there so he's freaking out there's another coach coaching i think they kept the record he always talked about he was always talking about me and my dad's relationship like through sport so i know i know he's a great dad yeah yeah no totally absolutely i we were

up at the house. We went up to see him in Ohio. He was doing a play, like in between while we were filming the movie. He's a savage. I love John. Who's the Twilight guy? What's his name? Rob Pattinson. Who's Rob Pattinson? Who's Rob Pattinson? Well, Rob Pattinson's one of the greatest living actors. He's no longer the Twilight guy. The Batman? Yeah, Batman. Team Edward. Shout out. I just, I, my sister was so obsessed with him as that. Yeah. You know, I mean, in that time capsule of our life. I mean, the Batman, he's a great

actor. Well, who is he in sport? Oh, fuck. Oh, fuck. Oh, boy, he's a wide receiver. I mean, like, he's like Jerry Rice. The greatest wide receiver?

Rob Pattinson is a heavyweight. He's about to be in Dune 3. I saw the trailer. Oh, my God. It looks like, yeah, this is just one of these guys that's a... Jerry Rice has every record. So that would mean like he's got to have everything. I don't even

think Rob Pattinson has really started to find his like high level game yet. Yeah. Like winning Oscars and he goes into movies where he'll just which is rare I think today he's not afraid to just pop

you're getting the best. You were getting some sort of like island flavor, you know. So in Iceland, they're heavy on the on on meats there. Yeah, everywhere we were, Greece is obviously very heavy on certain meats, but like lamb, cheese, beautiful, incredible cheese and green. Greece and we were near Kalamata, which is where the Kalamata, olive originated. I thought I thought he was... What were you going to say? Kalamari? No, no.

The Kalamara, Kalamara. I feel like Kalamari probably originated in Greece. I mean, probably. I think that's true. Octopuses and, yeah, but also the Mediterranean's cold, which I didn't know. At that time of the year, probably. I think it's traditionally the colder. not like the Atlantic, but it doesn't match the, it's 110 degrees and the water's like kind of cool and

refreshing. Yeah. Which is wild. I didn't know that either. That's wild. Iceland, the sun didn't go down. That, that Iceland is punishing. That's a punishing place to live. That is, we were there, I guess, in the summertime, so the sun didn't go down. I mean, there's, I have video of like we were hitting golf balls into a mountain because we stayed in, and, Winnebago's because there's no hotels in the places we were. Yeah. We were in towns where there were no hotels. So you just stay in tents?

Trailers? We were in trailers. Everybody had like Winnebago, that's so sick. It was so fun. Now, who's the best golf hitter on set? Andrew Howard. He's a Welsh guy. A Welsh.

Yeah. He's a real wild man. He lived in Palm Springs a bit. He loves golf. Too much, actually. but my game's all right if I get a couple of rounds in. Well, you're hockey guys. Hockey guys know to square shit up.

No chips. How'd you do your chip thing, then? You just do it off set? Yeah, I would do it in town. So you're the bad boy of the set. Look, you know, no chips. So you do it off off. No rules.

No rules. There's no rules, but it's like there's also not a lot of things. So if he doesn't want chairs on set, there are no chairs on set. So it's like you find a rock. I have an incredible picture of Damon asleep on the boat. And he told me he woke up or I think I had to wake him up because they were like ready. and he woke up, this is incredible. Matt's incredible.

He woke up and he was like, oh, man. He like had to get himself together for a second. And he looked at me, he goes, that's the first time I've ever slept on set in 30 years. He's like, whoa, that's heady. Like he meant like actually on the set, physically on the set. He was on the other end of the boat. It's like another world, right?

the boat's huge. But that was the wildest thing that happened to me just from like a heady standpoint. Because I was watching him sort of reflect on his entire life to that moment because he fell asleep on set. And he was sort of not embarrassed, but he was just like, it was shocking. He woke up and he was shocked. Oh my God. Because it was so tiring. Yeah.

It was just, it was a rule tough environment. Yes. And by the way, and Nolan's probably loving it, isn't it? He loves that he's tired. He loves that he's seeing you guys suffer a little because that is how you capture the people of the old time. Like Bill would see a fight on fucking the field and he would sit there and yell at us, sent us back, but he loved it because it means we were competing. Yeah. Yeah, Chris, listen, I don't think he wants people to live uncomfortably. but I think when you're at work, all bets are off.

Well, Columbia has oceans too. You're right, the Pacific. Pacific. You're right. Ocean talk. Ocean talk. I was an inland guy, Ontario.

We have Lake Ontario. But yeah, sea sickness was real. Muscoca. Muscocas are beautiful. Beautiful lakes. Beautiful lakes. I would love to be in a position where I could work whenever I want and then go to Muscoca a couple times a year.

And then talk about your Muskoka room all the time. You know, like everyone in Muscoca thinks that they invented the screen room. It's fun. I'm like. They're big in Florida. I mean, every lake. has a screen room. But they call it a Muscoca room.

Oh, I didn't know that. You got to come check out our Muskoka room. But Jules is a California lake guy, which is also sort of rare. It's white trash. Well, I wasn't going to say that. But East California, white trash. You guys go to lakes.

We went to lakes growing up. And are the lakes as nice as our Canadian lakes? Because we can drink out of it. Really, glacial. Have you ever seen Lake Tahoe? Beautiful lake. It's California. Pretty pretty.

Pretty beautiful lake. I mean, you know, Lake Tulloch, you're in the beautiful plains before you enter up the Sierra Mountains to Yosemite. So you see the old gold mining country. See little gold mining towns. So why doesn't California promote its lake life more? I don't know. which this is what's, you know, crazy is I lived with Brett in Detroit. He becomes the co-GM in Dallas. He signs me. I last, whatever it was, six weeks or eight weeks.

I make the sloppy seconds comment. They run me out of town. The team sends me, well, the league suspends me for six games. Then they send me to anger management in Malibu to a rehab facility. All right. Why don't we just make a movie about you? This is all culminating to this game. So like, I'm a Dallas star.

I left New York. I signed as a free agent, Dallas. The whole thing blows up. And now I'm back in New York, okay, waiting. I've done my suspension. As we mentioned earlier, 2009 brought him back after Dallas, let him go there. Coming off, first round playoff, exit, no, nine. This was, this was Torterella's first year or two, right? Yeah. This season was, okay. How was Torrella? He's the worst. That's what I've heard.

He's the worst. He's, you know, listen, whatever. Here's how I say about John Tortorella. I couldn't pass to him in practice. Like, he can't skate and take a pass at the same time. So I'm very biased and sticky in my rules that I like my coaches to have played. All right. Now, if age is like Scotty Bowman, he came on the ice with the old skates and he was just older and awesome and had won 12 Stanley Cups or some crazy number.
