Hey folks, Jonathan here.
This week's podcast is a little different than usual.
It's an edit of the audio portion of a let's play that we streamed on YouTube.
Unfortunately, there's a bit of audio choppiness in the first 20 minutes, so sorry about that, but it does get better.
Please comment at dfroundtable.com on whether or not you think that this works as podcast content.
It seemed all right to us, but since we helped make the content, we're probably not the best judge.
So this was something that came up as an idea at the last minute when a wrench got thrown into the machinery.
The actual stream is on our YouTube channel, but if I were you, I'd not bother with it because the version that you're about to hear is better, visually and audio-wise.
Also, this episode will mark the beginning of our summer hiatus.
we'll pick up with episodes again in September,
so watch the website toward the end of August
for the date of the next streamed recording session.
Another unusual thing about this episode
is that there were no natural breaks to put in our patron ads,
which I have had a ball making, by the way.
So I would like to take this time to thank everyone
who has supported the podcast since we added the Patreon page.
So Blood Toes, Lucas, Brandon Wright,
Jack Dillon, Christopher Harris, Justin Lothimer,
Plino Dev, Logan Hastings, Potato Bomb, Mr. Gutsi,
Nathan Johnson, Chris Mooney, Zarr, Brendan Poole,
thank you all so much for supporting the podcast.
I'd also like to give a shout out to the people who are following us on Patreon.
They're Benjamin Slade, Dean Daldagan, Jamie Britton, Pedro Pereira, and Sebastian Ruiz.
Thanks so much for supporting the podcast, and thanks to all the listeners out there who've made this such a joy to do.
So, without any further ado, here is episode 55.
Let's play some Dwarf Fortress.
Welcome to Dwarf Fortress Roundtable, the podcast for all things Dwarfee.
I'm Jonathan.
And I'm Tony.
And Roland is out today.
I think that he's vacating or on holiday or however those Europeans say it in their fancy way.
Doing something awesome in Europe.
Yeah.
So I've got a meeting here.
And we are doing something a bit different today.
We are having a live disaster.
That's cool because that's what we do.
A disaster hasn't even been a disaster yet.
It's too early for that.
You know?
Our fort hasn't even died yet.
Come on.
Never before.
I've been to a zoo meeting that I've enjoyed seeing what people are sharing on the screen more than right now.
It would just delight me if somebody did this at work.
Played to a portraitist.
I've got to share something today.
Oh, great.
Oh, fantastic.
Thank you.
Well, this meeting's just taking a turn for the better.
Okay, so, so, Tony, I started up this.
It is a, if I'm not mistaken, it's a savage wilderness area that we have.
It is not a reanimating biome.
Yeah.
Oh, okay, that's a great start.
I'm feeling good about this already.
Yeah, it is not a reanimating bio.
I turn the frame rates up.
The graphic frame rate is up to 200 frames per second, so we can have our guys dig fast.
I think I've got the game FPS up to 2000, so we want to continue playing.
That's just enough.
Right amount of thousands.
Histories of gluttony and enterprise.
Okay.
I'm going to make it a little bit bigger
because to hopefully make up for the
a little bit lower solution.
It helps me.
Anything is good.
My eyes are less than they used to be.
Okay.
Continue playing, I say.
Oh, wait.
Is that right?
Am I on the right thing?
Yeah.
Okay.
And Lamb, Snurl, Gashid, Kokum.
Interestingly, whenever you're choosing names for things, you know, you have the interface where you can pick the names.
Dwarf called us lame.
Look at that.
It's really hard.
Dwarf is not an option in the things that you can name, I don't think.
Or neither is fortress.
I was hoping to do Dwarf Fortress Roundtable as the name of the fortress.
Instead, we got lame snarl.
Preparing graphics.
Come on, guys.
I'll tell you what, one thing that absolutely slams my graphics card
harder than anything else right now is Door Fortress, which I don't understand.
But like the GPU load when I run the game is like 60%.
And it's not a V-DGPU that I have.
Whoops, beep.
It's a pretty good one.
Oh, here we are.
Yes.
Oh, so you've got like a five-second delay even on Zoom.
I do.
Yeah, good old Zoom.
Bless it.
Look at those FPS.
I'm right.
So we're year 125 here in lame snoo roll.
Yeah, look at the name of the, this is the closest thing that I could get
Roundtable, the Fortress Roundtable was Roundstable, the Forest of Dwellers.
That's the name of the fortress.
I love it.
Okay, so we have done absolutely nothing.
This is, it has never been taken out of pause from whenever the embark happened.
So I'm going to zoom out here just a little bit so you can see.
see an overall look at the
layout.
Okay, so we got ourselves, this looks like an
engineered stream. Look at that. It's like
a channel. This is
a...
It does. Hey, you know what? That's true.
It did not show to have any
constructions nearby whenever
I pick the
embark location.
So you know what I would do here is I would
clear cut some of this forest and then I
would start digging down.
That would be what I would do.
Digging down and not in.
It's your play.
Typically, I will dig into a side.
Okay, so.
All right, let's do it.
Yeah, let's go in.
Let's see what's in there.
Some sand and some rock.
I've been burned before because sometimes I'll hit the tree roots and then I'll
accidentally have my guys go up and mine it and then I'll make little holes in the top of
my fortress for things to come into.
So you go down three layers rather than long, right?
I got a little PTSD from one of those little instance.
Okay.
Yeah.
So there's the tree cutting.
Let's go ahead and do a.
A channel down.
I'm going to just do it right here, right beside the, the, uh,
DX for, and this is always a good keystroke to know.
DX or PX or anything X does away with whatever designation that you have.
All right.
So our, our, our gang has dug down.
We've made a hole in the ground.
Is he stuck down there or is he?
No, I'm paused again.
okay um should we uh like
typically whenever i'm doing whenever i'm doing the channel down i will do a
small area that's uh out a little bit before i do my next run down yeah i i think that makes
sense and who are our neighbors are they good people or are they hostile jerks uh so to do
that, I do
C. Yeah.
So this is a Dwarveral Fortress of Skull Tower.
I know, right?
Where the X is blinking is where we are.
The Dwarven Fortress of Roundstable,
the fortress of dwellers.
It doesn't look too bad.
There's some goblin things below us there.
So how can you tell that?
I think it's that,
I always think it's those purple circles
with the lines underneath.
I think that's goblins.
Whenever I see that, I was like purple's danger.
Yeah.
Dark goblin pits of
there, yeah.
Matched fiend.
Oh, look, we're at peace with them.
Great.
Bless them.
Well, there are friends.
Let's send a caravan over to the goblins.
Nightmares of planning.
That's, that describes our fortune.
Spoken like a true corporate project.
Spoken like a true live streamer, the nightmares of planning.
It's going to be a fortress full of six sigma people.
Okay.
So it's, so this is just, and.
teal continent the enchanted barb inaccessible interesting
how can it how can it be inaccessible the enchanted
the enchanted barb sounds like an older lady that your parents
might have been friends with it has a little too much
at the cocktail parties they have you know anyway
um so like you got some dwarves down there
I think this is I think you're cool like this is like a happy land
everybody's like everybody loves everyone here this is like
this is like a common
boring
I'm in good shape.
When it says things are inaccessible for my location, what's that mean?
Does that mean that I just can't send a squad there?
Yeah, you have to go around it.
I think it's the mountains in this case.
It won't let you go through the mountain.
You've got to go around them.
So what are the, what are the, uh, the, uh, the, uh, the, uh,
the, I see a giant pie down here.
P.I.
I think the pie is a tower.
Yeah, no, I'm hungry, but yeah, I got you.
Oh, okay, the dark goblin fortress of dungeon hated.
Ooh, sounds fun.
Okay.
So this place is going to suck, I think.
Population of 200.
Here's a pink pie.
That's another...
Oh, pink pie is usually a necromancer, isn't it?
Oh, no.
The Gobble of Fortress, there's scourge control.
I don't know.
How can you know what the else are?
The crazy fiend, they're probably something obnoxious.
So I'm going to go down...
Okay, so we've got a couple of Vikings down here.
Cool.
I'd say go down again because I see all these tree roots here.
Tree roots make me frightened.
And I would be stunned if we hadn't punched a hole.
with our clearing
so you're a
I notice you're a channeler
and not a stair digger
I'm I'm a stairway guy
oh well
I always do three wise to that I have no idea
well I do it so that you can get your
caravans in their trade depot
oh sensible sensible
I'm an idiot and I always just put my tree depot
at surface level and then let everybody destroy it
and then rebuild it
yeah I'm a simpleton
when it comes to this
all right so we are channeling down and then we should dig out down here one more layer and it will be good to go
oh i think we've got some comments yeah yeah i think it sounds like maybe your audio is a little
choppy there partner yeah you know um yeah i'm i've you know i'm i'm i'm rocking the gigabit
bi-directional and i'm plugged into wired right now so i think i'm probably okay yeah
Yeah, next time we live stream an actual thing like that,
we might work on seeing how we can get it to come from your spot.
Yeah, because I'm not going to have those constraints so much.
Yeah, that's totally possible.
Yeah.
So, folks, yeah, apologies for the crappiness of the live stream.
We are going to next time when we come back,
perhaps start streaming from what he just said.
Yeah.
Well, yeah, we'll start from the gigabit.
We'll test too.
How about that?
We could even test.
Well, you know, I did test.
but it's hard to test production whenever you're don't have we you know yeah and we pulled the
the zoom link at the last minute too so um yeah that's true i hadn't played anyway no no and
and that's you know not it's not a gentle protocol by any stretch you get that is it i don't know how
it's gotten better okay so now that we have a dug down a little okay so we've we've got this
so do you want to i mean
fun well mushrooms grow in dirt so um one thing that i often forget to do is get them
a mushroom farm early on and then i end up having to panic because they don't have anything
to eat and or drink and they're furious so we could head that off now and build them
yeah build them some shrooms get them we'll do that i'm also going to build a little spot here
to to load in my uh stuff that's out there on the cart
Because I like to do a general purpose stockpile to get it out of the open.
Smart.
Yeah, smart.
And do you, do we, do you have poultry with us?
We've got chicken.
Yeah, we've got some turkeys or something.
Yeah.
Do you want to put it, put it, one of the things that I will do at the beginning is, yeah, nest boxes.
And then basically that kind of sorts out food for me because I think my, my dwarves tend to be, what do you call them, ovotarians?
They like to eat lots of eggs.
in my ford, partly because that's all they have.
But, you know, I do that every time with my farm plot.
I accidentally place one farm plot when I don't mean to.
That doesn't sound good.
Oh, it's just an office argument.
It happens occasionally.
Oh, my God.
That's not it.
Not the cat leather bags.
Not the cat leather bags.
Ah, hell.
Guys, knock it off.
Score down.
Is that a spray bottle?
Yes, it is a spray bottle.
Windex, so clean them up.
Okay, so what was, I was trying to, let me go ahead and remove this again.
And X removed building.
There we got it.
And then I'm going to go ahead and build another farm plot.
And this time I'm going to use the U instead of a rectangle.
Right.
Yep.
because so I know there's a whole science around how big people make their farm plots
because for a while I was making these big ones and then they would never work
and then I read somewhere like there are ideal sizes of farm plots and I think some people
will even go as far as to make multiple like three by threes or five by fives or whatever
to obtain maximum shroomage but I'd love to hear from people if they have any
thoughts on that because I've heard that too
I'm kind of thinking that
I'm at the point to where if
I don't need
optimizing for
a farm plot size I really don't think
at this point
you don't think we're looking at a thousand year for here
so far is that what you're saying? Well even if we are
then I demolish the original one
and
and then I'll
enough fair enough
oh man
yeah and
Oh, look, I see cats in there.
Okay, so now we have our dwarves running our stuff from our cart here.
So they're doing great.
So they're bringing everything in.
That's really swell.
I do think the MF tiles, that's really nice.
I haven't really used it for a while.
I'm going to now do a queue, and I'm going to remove the wagon.
Oh, I want to also build me some corpse.
stockpile out here to keep my asthma from happening it sounds like you're squishing a
or squicking a balloon yeah sorry I was just trying to slowly move something across my desk
and it wasn't moving very nicely so thank you pardon um so we got in there are they going to bring
wood in I got I you know when I was playing in the in the purple biomes or in the stuff in my old
worlds like my my order was basically like dig a hole down cut down all the trees if there are trees
and build a wall around that hole and then take a deep breath.
And so I think we don't need to kind of panic build quite as fast with this particular fort.
So I suppose we could start getting some actual infrastructure in place.
So we've got the mushroom thing built.
So I would say check and make sure that they're not going to eat the seeds of the mushrooms.
Yeah, yeah.
Because that's so annoying when they do that.
So you can tell them not to cook them.
And we're going to do a shift A for all seasons, plump helmets.
Shift enter, right?
Yeah, shift enter.
Thank you.
Okay, so plump helmets, and then that would be under the Z and kitchen.
Yep.
You have no appropriate ingredients.
Oh, yeah, seeds that we are.
Oh, yeah, I know.
don't want to cook.
You don't want to cook the spawn or
and then once you get helmets.
Yeah, and then once you get helmets themselves,
don't let them cook the helmets
because that'll destroy the seeds.
Yeah, but you don't have any yet,
so that's why you can't do it.
Okay.
So let's build a...
What's that?
Plump helmets.
What a name, plump helmets.
My God, he must have had so much fun coming up with that.
All right, so I'm going to
dig myself a little bit
of a stairway, see if we can get to some rock
down here somewhere. Yeah, I think that's
a sensible idea. Oh, is there an aquifer here?
Uh, no.
Even the light aquifer just
oh, it takes time. You know, like, I don't
mind it, but it takes time. And I guess
I'm not enough of a dwarf an engineer
to fully see
the benefit of having one
yet, but that's a
that's a 2021 to do.
All right. So what have we got left
on land that I forgot.
Nothing. Okay.
Oh, I need to make an underground meeting area
to get the actual dwarves to come in
out of the rain. Are you going to do that in the stone?
You're going to dig down and grab some stone.
Try to get up a dining room first.
Well, actually, I'm going to get them out from outside.
You know, just put up a temporary.
Well, fair enough.
There we are.
That'll at least get everybody in out of the rain.
Here you go, Digger.
there's some stone
Hey, how about that?
What do you got?
What kind of stone we got there?
Do I care?
It's not going to be some.
Well, you know, if it's, what do you call it?
Stuff that makes coal, that stuff's useful to pull out earlier than later.
Rough hune, rock salt.
Rock salt.
Hey, we're going to be a fortress that does dining and cooking.
We're going to have the fortress of restaurants.
so have you i mean can you use rock salt for anything i don't i don't think it has any use does it
honestly this is the first time i've ever actually hit it oh okay okay here's granite
granite is magma safe isn't it okay granite is magma safe yeah it's a good one um it's so
funny i think you don't usually hit it that soon so it doesn't i i don't think you've got
what is it a flux stone layer i don't know that you've got that so we might not be making
much steel that's right it's okay i i i depend on goblinite i'm
I do Sanford and Sun Fortresses.
Awesome.
Yeah, look it up on Wikipedia, people who don't understand that reference.
If you're not aware of it, yeah.
It's not a new show.
Although it's due a remix, isn't it?
I was going to say, with all the creativity that they have in Hollywood and things like that,
I'm sure that we're going to have an epic Sanford and Sun movie series.
Well, I'm waiting for the Door Fortress.
series
Ordenzel Washington
plays Fred Sanford.
Yeah.
Or Denzel Washington
plays Horrist.
Morgan Freeman plays Fred Sanford
in his
career defining role.
And, oh,
Jayden Smith plays
Lamont.
Oh, Lord.
So does it matter?
Does it matter where I dig in here?
I don't think it matters
at all.
Yeah, how deep do you want to take them?
Do you want to try to go down and hit magma?
And then we can start building magma forges?
Right off with seven people?
Yeah, well...
Sure.
Yeah, why not?
Why not?
What the hell?
What do you get to lose?
Look at that.
It's great, you know, because I didn't see any coal.
And so I think, you know, we don't want to be in the position of having to catch up.
And we might as well build our fort someplace warm, right?
All right, we're going down 100 deep.
Perfect. There's nothing bad, nothing to worry about down there.
Well, what's going to happen is, it's going, oh, you know, what's going to happen is as soon as we hit the first cavern, it'll open up and we'll see more.
Sure.
Okay, so we have one dwarf that's going to be keeping busy, digging really, really deep.
I'm going to go ahead and open up just a little bit of a room here.
Actually, I don't know that I need to.
Is there any reason to open up anything else up here at the ground level?
I don't think so.
Once you start getting near the hot stone or whatever,
or I guess near our caverns even, maybe.
I suspect you'll probably have the caverns first.
I have struck my car.
That'll also give us access to water so we could dig a well.
I need to set up a livestock pen.
The doors really like wells.
How soon do you usually build your wells, or do you build wells?
I have never built a well in my life.
well let's do that um
and this is going to be a in
and I'm going to put
you know I have taken to take
putting my all of my animals dogs and cats
included but not turkeys and stuff
in my um livestock pin to keep them
out of the way
and do you have any great oh so you're doing it up above
ground okay yeah and do you do anything with the animals
other than eat them do you like cheese them
or um woolen or anything like that i have not mostly i i do it up on the ground just so that
the uh that the yaks and horses and cows won't starve right yeah i do that too i because i
feel bad if they starve even if i know i'm going to eat them or not keep them for the long
term i still hated if they starve well and if they starve inside the if they starve inside
the fortress you've got a myasma hazard it's true yeah i i just
end up having some sort of weird empathy for my pixel animals and I don't really understand why
because usually I would eat them. I used to, but this last time I ended up having to try to get rid of
a frame, frame death, frame rate death. Yeah. I ended up, that's a thing. Just slaughtering
in mass numbers all my dogs and cats that were in a pen because I had like 70.
We talked about my theory as to why there's so much time between Door Fortress releases, right?
What's that?
I'm sure we've covered that.
Well, it's because the way that Tarn has to develop the code is the game gets more complex,
and he has to rely on Moore's law in order to allow the game to run on computers.
So he can only get more complex when processors have caught up with his vision.
So technically, he's driving innovation.
So there you go.
All of the shipmakers use Door Fortress as a benchmark.
Yay, there we go.
Look at that.
You've got leaves down there.
Let's see if there's water.
Leaves.
It looks like leaves.
It's green leaves there.
That does.
But I'm interested in the second thing that comes up here.
You have discovered a downward passage.
Yeah, I don't really know what that means.
I mean, just more caverns, I guess, that haven't been explored.
Maybe.
Maybe it could mean it's to a layer.
You know what?
Somebody's going to be really awesome.
and they're going to say, that means this, and we can end this mystery.
But I always thought it meant, like, there are deeper caverns that you can't see yet.
Could be.
But pretty soon, Monster Hunters.
So where did you punch into the caverns here?
Let's go figure out where that is, because we should build some, you know, we should sort that out.
Oh, no, look at that over there, dude.
Oh, there it is.
That's the down there.
Okay.
Yeah, we need to go check that out.
There's no water in here, though, is there blast?
It's going to zoom down and see if there's a.
uh this is that's zooming up so that's zooming up we're going to zoom down now there if there's if we go
down is there water oh jackpot okay so you want to build a well sure tell me how to do it i don't know
what's the purpose of the well okay so that's where they can get their water and then you don't
have to worry as much if they are not making wine and then it's good if you have a hospital because
they'll use the water to clean themselves and and do that kind of stuff the hospital needs it okay
So what I would do here is I would find a place where there's lots of water and then click on one of the tiles above the water like, like, you know, I'm moving my mouse here, right here. See? See? So just put your click on any of those water patches.
I think I can share my screen with you, can't I? Oh, yeah. Maybe I can. You've disabled participant screen screen. I wonder if I can request control. Who can share? I don't want who can. Tony is requesting remote control. Okay, approved. Click to start remote. Okay, cool.
Okay.
All right.
You're running my machine link.
What about there?
That's all I was going to say.
How about like right there?
And then if you go, does I think the delay is going to be a little much to.
Right.
But go up until you get to a solid ground above that.
Exactly.
Yeah.
So then.
I would even go maybe one or two more up so that you have more room to.
If you go too high, though, then they can't, the buckets won't reach the well.
So did I, did I d-d that right there?
Yeah, I did.
So now you know that's where you want.
Actually, let's de-h it because that's where you're going to punch a little hole.
Okay.
And now you can just kind of dig a room out around that.
All right.
Like you could make a tunnel.
I mean, I'll stop and let you do it because it's, I think, the latency is enough that it isn't happy.
I got the idea, though.
Yeah, yeah.
So we can try that.
And then it's, I think, a really fun thing to do to make a well.
We go too wide to get more than one dwarf down here.
Good plan.
Somebody was saying, like, wider cavern, wider hallways can help your FPS.
So if anybody knows something about that, I would be really interesting.
I think it was Roland that was saying that.
And the idea is that they don't have to do as much path in collision.
Yeah.
But the main reason that I wanted to do it is so that I could get two or three people with picks down here.
Actually, I only have two picks so I can get both of my miners down here.
I think that I said this.
I use the Nebulatron startup preset that's included with the Paradexas Arant's.
Yep, yep.
And aside, I was doing some reading, and I don't really know that Paradexas Arant has been the one
developing this.
I think that's the name of it because that's the person who originally did it.
But I think there's somebody else who's actually maintaining it.
So I need to look that up.
Yeah, Paradexas Arant's lazy new pack is, I think, being maintained by some
somebody else.
Is it?
I'm going to look that up.
I'm going to help and about
port by
Pizio.
Future Jonathan busting in here to say
that yeah, Tony is absolutely right.
I was incorrect.
Paradexia Serant is the person who compiles the
starter pack and does
the addition
of all of the utilities and the
graphics kits and all that.
And it is a Peugeot who
wraps
up in the Pi LNP launcher.
Thanks to Clean O Dev for pointing that out to me, and back to the show.
Contributions by Paradexas around.
I think that's just Pi L&P.
I think that's just the launcher, and I think Paradexas Aran make sure that all of the bits and pieces get compiled and put into this,
so it can be created as a distributable, a distributable file.
So I think PE, which is what I'll say, make sure that the core tools are in there,
like Door Fortress in the launcher and then make sure that
DWVT works and then puts all the utilities that people
want in there and then all of the tile sets.
And I think he's the one that just added the Vetlinger
a couple of revisions ago.
Okay.
So I think old PE is still quite shuffly.
I in no way meant to dis-U-P-E.
Yeah, but I mean in like all these Door Fortress things,
there's obviously a, yeah.
So, yeah, a lot, there's just lots of stuff.
that goes into these things.
Okay, so that's just one above it.
So, yeah, it should have punched through the floor there into nothingness.
So you should have a hole, an empty hole, right?
It should be...
It looks like it.
Yeah, there it is.
So you could type in BL to try to build a well,
and it'll tell you if you've got the right things
and just plop it in right over that hole.
BL.
Mm-hmm.
And...
Okay, so it looks like you've got to make some stuff.
Okay.
Which is fine.
So now you've got your grocery list.
Blocks.
So that means you need to detect.
I'm surprised you don't have a chain.
And chain can be like thread to.
It doesn't have to be a chain.
It's,
they're flexible as far as what they'll let you get away with here,
which is nice of them.
Well,
you know,
if building a well is a,
is something that you always want to do to start with,
then that is probably something
that you would add to your shopping list for the embark.
I did not add that because many of them will come with it.
I guess Nebulatron doesn't.
I think I've always, I always try to go for Gorney, Gorney ZZ-P-Z.
But it, I mean, it doesn't matter as long as you have those things.
And it's not too hard to make.
Sorry, the reason that I use Nebulatron is I will show you exactly why.
I can do this.
Now my nobles are set.
Oh, right.
Okay.
So they, it has a, it puts skills for, for all of your major nobles so that you can basically do what I just did.
So you can take 30 seconds to start and get all those set up so that you don't forget to do that later.
And you have a caravan there and you have no one to trade.
Yeah, that's the one that's important to me is the caravan guy because it can be really irritating if they don't.
If you don't have that.
Okay, I'm going to go ahead and build out a mason.
Mason's workshop here so that I can build those blocks.
I don't know if this is the best place to do it.
But one thing that I tend to do whenever I'm playing is I tend to think of these
workshops as being more permanent than they really need to be.
Just because you put a Mason's workshop here, there's no real downside to building it
and then have it do the task that you need to do, even if it's building 12 blocks
and then just destroy it.
You can always nuke it.
Yeah, I'm with you.
I sometimes think that where they are needs to be where they should always be, and that's not.
Like in SimCity, if you put a factory up there, you're going to have the neighborhood around it seriously affected by that factory.
So you want to be careful about it.
But, you know, I could put a butcher shop in the middle of a temple.
And I was thinking, yeah, I don't think they have that, like that hang up about where things are.
I don't know that, like, you could put a workshop in somebody's bedroom, and I don't know if it would upset them.
If it does, I haven't seen that.
Okay, so why lie milk-free bucket?
Oh, it just needs a bucket.
Okay.
Just an empty bucket is all that means.
Can you build a stone bucket?
Is there a bucket version of stone?
Don't think so.
I think you've got to do it out of wood.
I'm going to go ahead and open up a little bit of area here so I can build a carpenter's workshop.
and a little bit of a wood stockpile
to get some of that wood
to feed up for the beds anyway
and who else
what else we got here we're going to have on
your chain's going to be
probably your trickiest bit
because you'll just build a rope
yeah you could do that
well look we've got we're in a caves
we have spider stuff so
build a
oh see you got spider silk sure
yeah
spider silk sounds very
very valuable and tough
like it would be the luxury item,
but it's one of the easiest things to get.
Yeah, they'll go and gather it.
And I think you're early enough,
so the creepy crawlies won't be too bad in the caves.
I don't know that actually right now
we have a good way to get into the cavern, though.
So I'm going to need to...
I don't know.
We may end up having to go down to the next cavern layer.
What about up here?
Pillar sapling.
What are those?
Amfibian man, blowgunner.
Ooh.
Oh, well, they might be.
Are they hostile or are they friendly?
How can you tell?
You can hit, what is it, you?
And then you can go over to others.
And they'll tell you if they're jerks or not.
The Mnifuract tiles, that's really nice.
Look at those amphibian men.
Those are really, really cool.
They look like something out of a 1950s horror movie.
They're really awesome.
I love the attention to detail.
So what did you say?
How do you tell if they're...
Oh, hit you and then tab over to others.
Why are you not?
Hit you.
Tab.
Why is my tab not working?
Is it tab?
Am I wrong?
Oh, no, it's arrow keys.
Sorry.
This is one of those where arrow keys.
Yeah, they're hostile.
Great.
Yeah, so you'll have to kill them.
Or you can wait until you get more of the...
What do you call them?
The guys, the monster hunters.
And they'll come in and wipe them out.
Yeah, they're usually.
I don't have any, I don't have a military yet, so I mean.
Right.
Well, because they would be fun to destroy, to kill.
But, yeah, probably best to wait for them to.
I don't mind you to wait for yourself.
Or you could put all your guys in a squad and go beat him to crap.
Or you could just leave them alone and see if they come attack you.
I think we'll do that for now.
Yeah, fair enough.
That's the kind thing to do.
Well, I'm not being kind.
I just don't want to lose any of my dwarves at this moment.
build
workshop
carpenter's workshop
and we're on to
do a
stockpile
and wood
build a small wood stockpile here
just for the sake of getting
some wood done here to
build a couple more
I just need one bucket for a well right?
Yep, that's it.
Just one bucket for the well.
Petitions available.
Hey, already.
Ah, there's Monster Hunter.
That's your guy.
Here you go,
they'll sort out those annoying creatures for you.
So I would,
if I were trading on the Door Fortress Market,
I would short the lifespan of the amphibian men.
I don't think they're going to make it.
Click A for,
well,
I'll hit the caps lock.
That's the problem.
A.
And I want to build a bucket.
E, there it is.
And why not?
We'll do another couple beds, too.
and we'll make a little dormitory for the guys down here guys and girls for these citizens
okay so i just uh built a uh a little offshoot from upstairs so that we could uh have a little bit
of storage and room to work and puts a where the hell are you going with that bed idiot
oh he's going all the way up to the very top up to the to the to the general purpose stockpile
with the bed he made down on the hundredth floor well they're moron
that's one of the reasons why I built that
cleared out that little area there
what the hell is that thing
oh it's a dwarf
what's it got
Singon can be
Maste dwarf is visiting
yeah I've never really understood
why you'll just get random
things
visiting
I need to put up a hot key
they just appear
I don't really understand why.
Okay, capital H for hotkeys, and we're going to do F2,
and we're going to call it well.
Well, well, well.
And Z for Zoom here.
Okay, so F1.
Do you have the thread yet?
Right.
Okay, so F1 takes us to the top,
F2 takes us down to the well.
What did you say?
Do we have thread yet?
Are we still?
No, how do you make thread?
Is it a clothing shop?
I don't want to say that it is.
A cloth. It's a cloth.
Yeah.
I'm not very good when it comes to cloth.
I'm poor.
That's a poor skill for me.
I think it's the loom.
Here, let's do a quick aside and take a look at.
Actually, why don't you take a look at the wiki and
yeah i'm going to figure this out really quick here let's figure this out
why are you done
call it a chain okay
clothing shop using one clothier skill so yeah it's a clothing shop
to build a rope to build a rope yeah
okay so we're going to go ahead and build a workshop
clothing shop be a hell of a well hell of a well well well
I'm gonna let them get this cleared out just to
a hair bit more so that I can not have.
I know that it doesn't matter if you put your workshop right in the middle of the path,
but aesthetically, it's just awful.
So I want to get my workshop so that it's not blocking,
or not sitting in the middle of the only walkway into the level.
I was just looking at this, this wiki.
I'm trying to, yeah, so it is.
It is basically just, oh, look, yeah, let's let these guys in here.
Yeah, I know, right?
I think you want them.
They can go sort out those blowgunners if they've got access to the caverns.
I noticed that all you have to do is pierce the,
cavern and then they'll start showing up optimistically ready to fight.
Yeah.
Maybe there's downsides to accepting too many of them, but I, but I'm not sure.
Maybe it's like if you don't have enough food because they do eat your food and basically
consume resources and you don't get to control them until they petition for residency,
which I think they usually do unless they get themselves killed is how I think it works.
Okay.
Do I have a clotheier?
So at this point, typically, whenever I'm looking to see if I have a dwarf assigned to clothes making, at this point, I would typically reach for dwarf therapist.
You, on the other hand, would probably have auto labor turned on.
Yeah, I only use auto labor.
Yeah, that's all I do.
So if you wanted to check without either of those things, how there was a clothier, if there was a clothier, if there was a clothier,
Dwarf, how would you, how would you think you would do that?
So what I would do, and again, let's, let's, I'm going to hashtag this, controversial play
style. I would, I would just go into where is your DF hack window and I would type enable
auto labor.
Okay.
We will do that.
If I can find my DF hack window.
I don't have a DF hack window.
window. Where's my D.F. Hack window?
Don't turn on D.F.Hack?
Maybe I thought I saw load.
Hide DFack console. Control
Shift. P.
Control shift P. Okay, there you go.
Control shift P.
Oh, nifty. I would just type in enable auto labor.
Oh, wow. Look at that. That's pretty cool.
That's pretty old school.
Enabled. Control shift P.
And you can disable it.
too so it's like if you if you get to so and one of the others there we are things that i read is
sometimes people will um once the fort starts getting enough dwarves then they'll disable it so
then they can manage it more clearly because the real disadvantage here i know we've talked about
this before is if you use auto labor you end up with a lot of dwarves with random skills and
different things so you might have like a legendary soap maker but they're actually just farming now
and poorly that'll happen there i didn't build that
oh is this this must be one of the um
that must be part of the caverns
oh that's cool
because those are those little one ramps
this isn't part of this is constructive man
this ain't cavern
is it do you think
do you think this is somebody's fort
I think it might be cavern
there's no
there's no other signs of
cavernness
very weird
it's it doesn't
let's let's explore this
if it's got a
monster in it somewhere.
You know,
then let me go away for the,
good way for the,
for the stream to end.
It'd be hilarious.
Um,
yeah,
punch on over.
Is it?
Give your,
give your,
um,
petition or something to do.
Put them to work.
Lazy Gits.
Yeah,
you don't pay taxes.
Earn your keep.
Yeah.
I mean,
they're laborers,
their tax.
And I don't,
you got more coming in.
What's that?
You got,
And you got another petition waiting there, I see.
Hey, yeah.
Okay.
Come on in, boys.
Round stable.
It's called round stable.
That's awesome.
I suppose that's what you made it.
Oh, no.
Someone has set off the door fortress alarm.
Yeah, I know.
I've got a neighbor with a car alarm that they can't figure out of not make it go off every 10 minutes.
Lovely.
I mean, that's happy in the middle of the night.
Oh, God.
Okay, so I don't know how to make them actually explore.
I'm going to have somebody mine.
you're you're um yeah if you punch a hole into that your monster hunters will go sort all that out
they'll they'll run in and but will i get to see the stuff that the monster hunters have
have seen did that make sense yeah i think i think it'll unlock it for you
okay stop pausing stop exploding you cowards
sorry the random uh featureama quote thrown into the podcast for good
measure.
Go with you trauma.
Joe Allen Music says,
Hey, guys.
Hi, Joe Allen
Music.
So yeah, Joe Allen Music,
we understand,
we apologize,
the stream,
I think probably sucks.
We will try to make it happen
in a better manner
next time.
Yeah, there's very much
a beta test,
this kind of thing,
so we'll sort it out.
To let anybody
else who's come in since we started the
episode.
This is our final episode
before the summer hiatus, and
we're doing a little bit of a let's play here.
Roland has not been fired.
He is actually on
holiday,
which we are going
to be doing some
of that coming up soon as well.
Lo and behold,
as our American
listeners may not know, many a
European, take an entire summer month
off to go relax, which seems entirely civil and something that I think we should adopt
over here.
But anyway, I digress.
Holy cow, that thing goes up high.
Oh, wow.
How far up does it go?
Yeah, that's a huge, huge cavern.
Oh, wow.
You know what?
I think that this is a layer, man.
Or maybe, yeah.
I think it's just a giant cavern.
Well, let your boy sort it out and your girls.
Yeah, you're right.
I'm not going to be, I'm not going to gender this game.
the only reason that I think that it's not a cavern is it doesn't have the telltale characteristics of a cavern, which is, it doesn't seem random enough to be a cavern.
Maybe I should put it that way.
There aren't enough slopes, but I guess we'll find out.
Somebody will find out.
Anyway, so what are we doing?
We're building a well.
That's the point of this entire podcast is to try to build a well.
We're going to get the well, and I think then maybe we should wrap, build our well.
Okay, so I've got my clothing's workshop.
What do I want him to do now?
So how do I make a rope?
So, a cloth.
Silk.
Yeah, it could be.
There it is.
Silk rope.
Beautiful.
That will happen.
Your idlers should drop down.
And we'll see if we get cancellation spam.
Yeah, needs one unused something.
What did that say?
Needs one unused silk cloth.
So I need to loom to build the cloth.
So build a loom.
workshop loom
loom
loom that would be
oh
oh I need a loom
and
oh cobal tight
yes I
I don't like to use
I'm going to use it for this one
just because
but I don't like to use
cinnabar
or cobaltite
for anything
other than building
furniture
because I love the red
and blue furniture
oh okay
yeah
and walls and stuff
there's benefits to benefits or not benefits to anything.
It's purely aesthetic, but I like the blue and red that it makes things.
Okay, so we're building a loom, and I think that once you build the loom,
it will send somebody out to collect spider silk if it's available.
Here comes somebody to not build our loom.
Who's that?
That is someone picking up rocks.
Dude, stop picking up rocks and build the,
freaking loom. Oh, that's what he's
doing. Never mind. Sorry, dude.
I'd be a lousy
boss.
Start yelling at
them whenever they're actually doing what I'm wanting
them to do. Okay, building the loom,
collect webs. Hey, look at that. Look at that.
So they should do that pretty much.
Let's follow.
Since we've got to wait for this anyway, let's follow the person
who's collecting the web.
So, come to go you.
Not getting in by those amphibians.
men or whatever they're.
So I'm going to go to unit and follow.
And he is out in the cavern.
Joe Alla Music said,
Unexpected treat in my notifications.
Love of the podcast, tell Roland he's super lame for being absent.
Roland, if you're listening,
Joala Music says you're super lame for being absent.
That's right.
What else he got to do on a holiday?
This is holiday.
This is holiday material.
It's not like we're, you know, I'm docking his pay.
I could have, actually, I couldn't have sworn it for whatever reason I thought that folks in Germany when they went to the beach, especially in Berlin, they would go to the Baltic Sea because according to the map, you know, Google Map says that that's the closest thing to him. He's drinking. What are you doing drinking? You need to be collecting webs, you idiot.
Yeah, and I think we talked about that. I always assumed the Baltic is like where like Russians and X, the people that live in something.
Stan or Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia.
I always thought that's where they holidayed.
Well, I mean, you got the North Sea on one side of Denmark and the Baltic Sea on the other
side of Denmark, right?
I always associate the Baltic with being like a track suit kind of area.
So I hope I haven't really offended somebody.
I didn't get that reference.
What do you mean by like from hip hop in the 90s or?
Just Google Russian track suit.
Okay.
I will.
Russians and track suit.
You'll get an idea.
Okay.
Canceles collect webs, item lost or inaccessible?
What does he got in his hand now?
God, dang it.
Dude, that sucks.
Okay, well, I'll tell you what, he's actually building something here.
What is he doing?
He's weaving a thread into silk.
Okay, great.
Well, that's good.
That's what we want.
That's step one.
Whenever he gets done with that, I'm going to go back to the clothing and tell them to build a rope.
D-de-de-do. Dwarves are so talented.
They can stick a knife through a goblin's eye and then go back and crochet a nice little doily.
Or they go nuts and kill your whole fortress, which is what happened to mine.
I had somebody trying to build their artifact, and it was one of my legendary ax stores, and he was trying to build an artifact, and then he didn't succeed at that.
And then I sent the military in, and he killed four of them, and then he killed a whole bunch more people.
then I ended up with like 25 people
dead. So that didn't work.
So, you know, it's all fun
in games until they don't. Just one?
Just one rope should do? I think
that should do. Yeah.
You got your bucket. You got your rope. You got your blocks.
I think this is going to happen. So here's a
well, I don't have my rope yet. I'd tell
it to do it. Did that work? Yeah. Okay. So he's
actually supposed to be building a rope.
I also have a habit
that I've got to get out of
of just putting things on
repeat. I have got
to really watch Nathan's videos.
Yeah, I would say I was very inspired when I watched his video on stockpiles.
I was just like, man, suddenly everything in his game makes sense.
Oh, okay, I haven't watched that one yet.
Because I was like, okay, my thing is like, I'm going to actually learn what he's talking about
before I move on to the next one, because otherwise I just, then it just kind of was like,
oh, cool.
And then I didn't have done it something with it.
Well, it's mechanism.
Okay, so now I need to build a mechanics workshop.
Yep, BWT, I want to say.
Build workshop, mechanics.
And we're going to make a nice blue one out of cobaltite because it's here.
There's something special about cobaltite.
I think that you can make dyes out of it, blue dye.
Yeah.
If you grind it up into dust or something like that.
Yeah, I feel like there's a lot of stuff I don't do when it comes to, like, claw.
and manufacturing and stuff that I really feel like I could.
So if you see the map here,
I have probably done something stupid in that I opened up a hole to a hole.
I opened up a wall to a drop off that goes down like 5 Z levels into the water.
Well, I don't think you need to worry about it because there's no such thing as forgotten beasts.
You're right.
You're right.
There's no way that I, there's no possible way for anything to fly in here.
Nothing would pass, nothing could possibly go wrong.
You know, I was reading.
You know, I just wanted air conditioning.
So, you know.
Some people get really worried and, um, put grates in their wells so things don't fly into them.
And I don't do that.
I'm, I've yet to, I've yet to lose a game because I didn't do that.
So I think my thing in Door Fortress is I usually don't do something until it becomes a problem.
And then I'm, and then I, and then I rectify this situation.
Oh, my crap, man.
We are already down to 42 frames per second.
I wonder if that is because of all the other crap that I got going on my computer.
I'm not running an I-9 or a MacM-1.
Yeah, yeah, right.
No, I've got an I-9.
So we could, we could do that, although it's, it's no longer the fastest door fortress machine.
Hey, Garzini.
Welcome.
Okay, so has he done building his first mechanism?
some actually built up four mechanisms because we uh yeah yeah yeah joel music yeah
paranoid metroid was in the in the um in the chat a few minutes ago i think that he might
have left though so yeah his uh joella music commented that the uh paranoid metroid videos
videos are great and that he enjoyed him being on the podcast so yeah we'll have them on again
Okay, so we got mechanisms.
So let's see if we can build a well.
So B, L, needs chain, needs mechanisms.
So what?
Did I not build my rope?
No, I don't want to build an armor stand.
Mason, carpenter.
Are you building the bucket?
I was building the rope.
Oh, didn't they do that?
I thought you already did that.
I told them to.
Jerk.
Okay, so how do I
Maybe it needs more than one
That's it
Yeah, I just do a couple
I'll see what they go
See what he does
You'll get cancellation spam
I'm sure in a minute
But that's fine
What's the
Well no, the loom
Actually will automatically
Collect webs and build cloth
Yeah
Which is beautiful
But what was the question was
I was going to see
How do I find out
What I have in stock
That's Z
yeah and then your little man if he's count uh do you have a broker or do you have a bookkeeper
yeah he's not going to office yet though oh okay well that's why he's not counting
how do page down page down that does page down rope doesn't say i have any
yeah well try to build the well and see what it says it says i have a chain though so yeah
oh there you go perfect can't sputter silk rope so well yeah well yeah
But it still told me, it still told me that whenever I went to build L for well.
Hey, no, now it says I can do it.
Okay.
There you go.
Bang.
Beautiful.
Do I want to use rock salt or slate?
I don't think it makes any difference.
I mean, I would, you know it.
Yeah, sure.
Carambola.
Carambolla.
That sounds fancy.
So let's see that.
Carambole wood.
Do you think tea wood buckets make it taste like tea?
Yes.
I decree if you use a tea wood
tea wood for your bucket and you sore water
and it will make it sound like tea.
Okay.
Oh, interesting.
The carambollah is what starfruit comes from.
Okay.
You know what?
We have built our well successfully.
So can I tell them to do anything with it?
Have you done it?
Wait, it's not done yet.
It's not done yet.
No, you've got to have architecture.
Oh, crap.
So did they not automatically assign that?
come on a labor
get your ass in gear
it should do
it should do
I think somebody
just hasn't done it yet
I think that's all it is
yeah
I want to let him eradicate
monsters
and let him
say no to a guy
called Chuck diamonds
it's pretty cool
Paranoid
Betroid we've had
some people
as you can read
have said
that they like
your YouTube channel
and I like it too
oh I see him
taking a mechanism
oh damn it
there you go
well no
he's taking it
up to the top level
again.
I need to...
Well, as long as he brings it back down.
We're going to put a little
stockpile here so that they stop
carrying it 100 floors up.
Look at you doing
the stockpiles thing. That's awesome.
I'm glad to see it.
Let's see if you can build the well.
Where is the well?
It is down a level.
Oh, it's coming. It's so close.
Your doors are so close to being,
having their thirst quenched
and their wounds cleaned.
Have it got anybody
telling it to design anything
no
you've got a lot of monster slayers though
you know what it's time for me to grab my
tool out of the toolkit
uh we're going to
pull in my favorite
dwarf therapist here because I want
disable auto labor to make that work
otherwise it'll just
it'll undo it
control shift P brings up the DFX terminal
disable auto labor
auto labor right
bring up dwarf therapist here.
I'm going to go over here to architecture
and just make everybody a freaking architect.
Everyone's architect, man.
So, plus, boom.
We no longer will be waiting for.
Yeah, it would be nice if,
it'd be nice if dwarf therapists had the auto labor
were not set.
Like you can have some people who are covered by auto labor.
Yeah, I know it's proprietary, and I can't actually see the code base to do that kind of pull request myself.
So that is a horrible, horrible attempt to sarcasm.
No, it is open source.
I was trying to be, I was trying to be cute and failed miserably.
Oh, DF hack, you're saying.
Yeah, DFACC's open source.
Well, so is door therapist.
Well, what I was saying is if you can, if you get to program into dwarf therapist, the idea that, and it's summer.
the idea that you can set for some things,
then have it be automatic for others.
I don't know how that would work.
I'm just really pleased why I'm building this well.
So what are we waiting on the well?
Architecture still.
Architecture, that's very weird.
I wonder if it's because they're busy doing other stuff.
Hit you, are they moving stuff to a stockpile?
Oh, yeah.
What are they doing?
So let's tell them to stop.
Yeah, so that trumps everything stockpile.
That's a horrible.
Okay, so let me take an architect and turn him off of stockpile on.
Wow.
Seven-minute chat delay.
That's handy.
What?
What happened?
Seven-minute chat delay?
Yeah.
So.
Oh, my gosh.
Okay, so we've got some technical stuff to push out here quite clearly, which is fine.
Some minor buffering.
No big deal.
Oh, well.
Okay.
Here he comes with a blue.
Oh, yes.
It's a blue cobaltite mechanism.
Yes.
Oh, let's take a look and see if this is the guy who's building the well.
Construct building, yes.
We're going to follow that boy.
Yeah.
Goodness, he moves.
He doesn't walk with purpose, does he?
The ropes are probably up in the...
Well, I have to say this guy is kind of...
This is it.
Oh, my God.
What else does he got to go get?
You know, I usually play with Fast Dorf on, and that makes them move.
with purpose. I don't use teleport, but I just make them move faster.
I do tend to like... Oh, he's got the bucket.
Yeah, I think this is probably the end of it. I think this is...
Oh, no, he's going to get the blocks.
That was the rope, I think.
Here you go. Pretty soon. It's going to be well. Well, time's coming.
Everybody's going to be happy. Everyone will like this.
Let's see if it built.
No, it's still... Needed in basinry, so he's going to get the blocks, I guess.
Where do you go? Is that him? That looks like him.
That's him.
Looks like Santa.
No job.
Oh, you know, dirty.
Well, somebody that's probably going to assign masonry to your mason.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So you probably have to see if you have anybody with masonry skill turned on.
I do.
He's the guy who built the blocks.
We got three idlers.
So what do I do about that?
Yeah.
So I would just, you've turned off auto labor.
So go to you, your screen with the dwarfs or that thing.
That probably works.
You can see if somebody has masonry.
I saw it on somebody.
The idlers are not my guys, though.
Oh, right.
That's annoying.
Here you go.
Yeah, everybody's a Mason.
You're all Mason's.
Mason away.
You're a Mason.
And you're a Mason.
And you're a Mason.
And let's go back to, here comes a Mason.
Yes.
A key has stolen my bites.
Oh, my God, those things.
And I'm not very good at fighting.
There we are.
Look, it's a well.
Hey, there you go.
Beautiful.
It's my very first well.
in my
and this hunter dude
is just the human
monster hunter just crashed
okay Tika
there you go
so is there anything that I do
to use it now
you can make it a meeting hall
and everybody will come
hang out there
hey let's do that
I
or just click R
click on it and hit R
really
what's that
mm-hmm
hit R
really
yeah is that a special
well thing
yeah I think so
there you go
now everybody's going to
come rally around the well.
It's like the chat around the water cooler.
Exactly.
It's totally what they do.
Now they're going to come be friends and hang out here.
Okay.
So this is my first well.
There it is.
Now everyone's going to be thirst free.
Okay.
So I have to say, folks, sorry about the delay.
We're going to transfer, I think, the actual live streaming parts of this podcast.
over to
Tony's system
where he has probably
a little bit heftier processor power
and internet
throughput so that
maybe the delays won't happen so much.
And that will probably
be also good, better
delegation of responsibilities because
that way I can keep my mind on hitting
record on the actual
Zincaster feed.
We're not
just recording into nothingness.
and yeah
chat now has framed death
somebody Garzini said
it's going to be dandy
okay
all right so we got a well built
that was our
save this bad boy
this step one
oh yeah that's true
return to save game
that's what we're going to do
defeat hell
all right
okay so let's going to wrap up
this episode of Door Fortress Roundtable
keep an eye on
at DFRoundtable.com
for announcements as to when the next
episode's going to come out
probably will be within the first
two weeks of September
it takes six weeks or so off here
I'm going to be heading off for a family
vacation and when I get
back I will contact
the other podcasters
and we will schedule
our next recording date but
so yeah I hope everyone has a good remainder
of your summer everybody be careful
and say disease
free right
100%.
Okay.
Well, Tony, thanks for playing with me.
Yeah, good stuff.
I'm glad we got it working.
All right.
It's going to be good.
