Welcome to Dwarfortress Roundtable, the podcast for All Things Dwarfie.
My name's Jonathan.
And I'm Roland.
I'm Tony.
So 20 years of Dwarfortress.
So, yeah.
Neat-oh.
I mean, it can vote now.
That's a big thing.
Yeah, I was all hyped up about the 30th anniversary of Doom when it came out a couple years ago.
And I didn't even realize that the 20th of the Dwar Fortress was coming up.
You know, I hadn't thought of it either.
I mean, I'll be really honest with you.
I don't think I checked it.
The first time I checked it out wasn't until like 2013, so it had already had a bit of a journey.
Yeah, definitely.
That was my first, when I became Dorvin Curious.
I think it was 2018, somewhere around in there.
It was the 47 series, so, yeah, whenever I figured it out.
Yeah, I think I clicked in in the 40s.
I never really played much of the 30s.
That, I'm not realizing I don't really know when I really started.
I know exactly, actually that should be easy to find out because I remember that I saw it the first time when a streamer was playing it.
And I saw him like a day after his stream.
I clicked on his video and I was like, wow, this is the most chaotic game I've seen.
I need to play it.
Yeah, that must have been like 26.
16, 15, something like that, I guess.
Well, one way you can find out for sure is to go back and list a Dwarf Fortress Roundtable episode one.
Is that the Crook Smash one?
Because at that point, six years ago, you did remember the details of your first playing of Dwar Fortress.
True.
I mean, it has been six years, you know, you forget these things.
And we had Tony on as a guest, I think it was what, episode six, seven?
Was it?
Oh, did you just six, seven us?
Oh, my lord.
Six seven.
I don't know.
You did that, and I'm supposed to be the Gen Z here, right?
Yeah, you are.
But see, it's obviously ruined because now it's floated up to the point where somebody that's not supposed to do it.
So that's how you kill the meme, ladies and gentlemen.
Give me your best meme.
I know that you came in the episode after Krug Smash was on.
So you just missed Krug smash.
You were a guest, so, yeah, interesting.
Just like those people who come to your house and you're like, hey, is it time for you to go yet?
Oh, yeah, gosh, it sure is getting late.
And I somehow just, like, moved in and my shit's here and you guys were like, all right.
It's funny that you say that, Tony, because me and Roland were talking.
And we think that it's about time for your...
I don't know what happened to the...
You had a toothpaste.
and toothbrush in the bathroom.
I don't know.
It just gets gone, I guess.
Well, I went on the backyard yesterday,
and I noticed there was an addition to the house
that I didn't know about.
Why are there traps in the living room?
Traps.
You're like cage traps, so we can...
I just want you guys...
Secure you into the pool house.
Yeah.
I just don't want you guys getting slack.
And speaking of Krug Smash,
he got the Storyteller Award,
the Bay 12 Games Beyond Quality Origins.
Origins Award? No, that was just the storyteller award.
He got one of them. So that was nice. Yeah. That was nice to see.
For those of you who haven't seen the 20th anniversary video yet, go watch it. It is really, really, really, really cool.
There's some intro with the folks from Kit Fox and some other community leaders, but then the real meat of it is Tarn and Zach playing through the very first release of Dwar Fortress.
that was released in 2006.
They were surprised, and I was actually,
I've never played that version,
so I was kind of surprised as well
at, you know,
how much stuff was actually in there
that is still in there now.
And some things,
somethings have changed radically, of course.
But there are some things that are very much the same,
like the opening text whenever you embark,
still the same.
Beyond quality.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, good stuff.
Kind of miss that intro sometimes, you know.
I do too.
I very much.
do that like really low and slow roll in
I mean that was a great askie.
I love Aski animation or antsy animation.
Just absolutely peak computer creative.
And look, I know that you can cue up the original Dwarfortress song on YouTube and listen to it while you're playing.
But man, I just wish there was a way to just turn on that original soundtrack in the
modern version because just having that very, very sparse, Tarn Adams delivered classical
guitar, just, it added so much to me to the atmosphere of it. And I typically now turn off,
and at the time I turned off the music a lot of times too, but now I never play with the music
because it kind of distracts me a little bit. It's a little too polished, if you will. I don't know,
maybe. I mean, I turn off music in every game. Music and sound are the first things I turn off on
Every game, okay.
So I'm terrible.
I'm a terrible person.
I've heard about this a lot.
No, no, I don't think you're terrible because honestly, I often do the same.
I turn down volume at least because I have terrible ADHD and something has to run on the side,
like a video, movie, whatever.
So, yeah.
I'm with you.
Yeah.
Yeah, I need my Dwarven companions, which is usually YouTube.
This segment has been brought to.
you by Sarnanagan's 20-year reserve.
A commemorative ale brewed
to celebrate 20 years of one
particularly stubborn fortress
refusing to die. Aged in
stone cellars beneath the dining hall,
it carries subtle notes of plump
helmet, cave moss, and whatever
happened during that unfortunate goblin
siege in year 12. Seranagan's
20-year reserve, for dwarfs
who believe surviving two decades
deserves a proper drink.
So other people that got recognized,
a lot of people that we have talked
I don't have had as a guest here on the forecast.
I'm on the forecast.
On the podcast.
So Noclip got the moment in time award for his four-part documentary on Dwar Fortress.
Krug Smash got the storyteller award.
I hope I'm not spoiling.
If you haven't watched this yet, we're, you know, dropping some major spoilers here, right?
Also, Snape kills Dumbledore.
Oh.
Okay.
Yeah, I just, I mean, if we're doing spoilers,
Wait, wait, wait, what?
Dumbledorf dies?
That is such an old meme.
I'm on book four.
You better read fast.
Old meme for an old man, you know.
Wait till you find out who Darth Vader is.
That's all I'm going to say.
I'm not going to spoil that one for you.
Yeah, he's the emperor's son, right?
He's, it turns out he's raised grandpa, or I don't know,
I can't figure that any of that shit out anymore.
Let's see, who else?
Rimworld got the descendant award.
We've talked about Rimworld quite a bit.
Too right.
Yep.
That's a good one.
Space Fortress.
Crugs Smash got the storyteller award.
Blind IRL got the,
what was the name of the award that Blind got?
Cool guy who teaches you how to play the game award.
It was something like that, right?
Yeah.
It's the Evangelism Award.
That's not what it was called now.
That's helping people learn how to play the game award.
Guy that's like super.
super patient beginner tutorials award.
He has something like that.
Yes.
Yeah, I think that was another good award well deserved
because, you know, I think his,
I think didn't he start out as like just streaming
and it's kind of evolved into things that you'd now share
with people who are trying to learn to play the game.
And I think that's a heck of a journey for somebody to do.
But I'm sure all the billions he's making doing it.
The billions.
Yeah.
I mean, seeing the huge amount of cash, this podcast is raking in, you know, I've bought my sixth yard this year.
I'm feeling pretty good about myself.
We won the most profitable podcast award, having just closed a $40 million sale to private equity for this bad boy.
So Cleaner Dev got an award for the subreddit, Krug Smash, no clip, Blind IRL.
Rimworld
Angband got the
Origins Award, which I thought was really
cool. I really used to really
like roguikes. Yep.
Case of Cug got
an award for best rogue like, according to
them. Yeah, have you ever played
Engband, Roland?
No. It's a, it's a rogue like
in the model of
Rogue and NetHack,
those old school.
I'm looking at it right now. That looks
pretty good, although that is all art, not the game.
What's the name of it?
Angband?
Ang, G, B, A and D.
Is it like related to Angband?
Oh, it is. Okay, cool.
It kind of looks a bit like
Tales of Majal or Machial
or whatever, but
have you guys seen that one? Tales of
Machial.
Yeah, well, kind of
surprising, Engband didn't get the
Sees and Desist from the Tolkien estate, because that's why
Tales of Magial or whatever,
that's why it's called that because it was originally called Tales of Middle Earth, Tom, Tome, T O'Me.
And then they got, he got the old cease and desist and had to rename it.
Does Tolkien really care?
I mean, it could also be, that was a commercial product and he was selling it.
No, fair enough.
Where Engbad was not a commercial product.
No, all right, I give you that.
Yeah.
Can't sell other people's stuff.
It's my line of Mickey Mouse baseball caps got cease and desisted.
I feel like, I feel like,
I feel like I'm leaving somebody out on the awards.
My apologies to whoever it was.
Did CDDA?
No.
Cataclysm Dark Days Head didn't get anything, did it?
No, nope, didn't get a mention.
We didn't get a mention.
I was sad.
No, we're not part of that ecosystem.
We with our, with our small, I'm not going to say,
with our very cozy listenership, didn't get a, you know, marketing is what it is.
I don't think a podcast fits in the Gen Z.
focused marketing efforts of what's her name Orlando or what's her what she called the community
manager yeah i don't think she hits podcast i think she's a i think she's a twitcher and a and a
youtube which is probably the right business choice to make for somebody in that well and that's a
kit foxing right that's that's that's sure sure that's got nothing to do with our our boys yeah yeah
exactly no no i mean it's a podcast for god'sakes like you can't you know you were not
2006 technology.
Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait,
2006.
That was a king that was released in 2006.
I don't know.
What was?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Well, Door Fortress players are demanding of the most
modern and, you know,
native novel type of interface.
I can see that being the case.
Real cutting edge group.
You know,
come visit my go for site.
too much, not to go into too much navel gazing here, but podcasts still have a place for audio-only
content. So there's a podcast that I've listened to for years, and they have recently started
doing a simultaneous YouTube stream and the audio podcast. And so they talk to each other on
YouTube, and then they just basically release the edited recording as a podcast episode. And that's fine,
except now they are saying things like,
here, take a look at this.
Let me share my screen.
The people on the audio can't hear this,
but check out the YouTube.
You should be watching YouTube anyway.
And like, no, no.
That's why I like podcasts because I can mow my yard
while I'm checking out of the content.
Totally.
I'm absolutely with you on that one.
And I will sometimes use the YouTube app to listen to podcast
because sometimes you don't have the same number of ads
shoved in there.
That can help.
But don't try to show me something.
I don't know.
I just, I'm not a, I like me YouTube, but I also like radio's benefit.
Actually, give money to Google for, for not showing me ads.
I do, too.
I'd say that's a good subscription to have because, and I can tell you,
Mommy Soapbox here, creators get some of that money back.
So it's a good way to support people who make cool content.
Yeah.
And I just, and YouTube has gotten so heavy with the ads in the last few.
years.
I've occasionally I will, I will go on to YouTube from work.
And, uh, my work, you know, account is not my personal account.
So I will get on there.
And you just have ads that start.
You have pre-roll.
You have mid-roll.
You have break-ins.
It's just very, very ad-heavy.
I'm kind of surprised that YouTube is still popular.
Well, there is no competition, really.
Yeah, that's true.
The videos are already on YouTube.
You can't really go anywhere else.
Yeah, yeah, this is peak monopoly, right?
Yeah.
Kind of, yeah.
And back to Dwar Fortress.
Let's see.
So, yeah, the first 20 minutes of the 20th anniversary video is some talk about the community and talk about Dwarfurtress and a little bit about the history.
But then Tarn and Zach play through about 45 minutes of the initial release of Dwarfortress.
and they it's the old 2d no z levels you know building your fortress from left to right digging into the cliff face
much like moria but yeah so everybody check that out check that out it is it is very much worth your time
and then after the uh the play through they uh they give the beyond quality awards so so everybody
check out got gets a big mention yes yes yes yes thank you the wizard reward the most glowing
of glowing. Like, I think what I love about it is it's like it's been, it's finally like,
I know they've always thought this, but like it's really a true acknowledgement that it's
essentially part of the game. Absolutely. And I just think the wizardry of that team,
I just like, just take a moment of silence for the freaking development effort of that thing.
And we've had, we had my gone. Yeah, I wasn't sure. I was, sorry, I was pausing there because I was like,
does he have an alias? Does he have an alias? I don't want to.
Okay, no.
Well, that is his family.
It's an M.K.
Yeah, yeah, right.
Totally amazing.
Like, this week, a release came out,
and it was probably not more than a couple hours
before they had pushed the next DF hack.
And I just, for a volunteer run thing,
I just think that's incredible.
So, hats off to those dudes and hats off to our guys
for acknowledging how cool that worked.
The DF hack guys, yeah, they're pretty cool.
I love it.
He said, you know, it was great.
you know, they'd fix bugs that we couldn't manage to get around to.
It's like, that's so beautiful.
I just think that's so cool.
And just, again, the fact that Putnam has been brought in as somebody who was part of the development.
I just, the whole story is beautiful and everything should work like this.
Yes, absolutely, absolutely.
And it should put to rest, you know, there was sort of a mock controversy in earlier episodes of Dwell Fortress.
You know, if you're playing with D.F. Hack, are you really playing Dwar Fortress?
Well, this should let you know, yes.
You are really playing Fortress if you play with D.F. Hack.
Well, yeah, I mean, you can cheat with it,
but also you can do things that are incredibly useful,
like build blueprints,
so you're not having to schlep out the same fortress layout
after you've accidentally flooded your fortress with magma.
I want to question whether or not you can actually cheat in a single player game.
It's not like this is connected to the internet, right?
I agree with you.
Yeah, what is the notion?
And like games that don't have God modes, like if I bought the game and I want to ruin it for myself, let me do it.
You know, I'm not hurting anybody else.
And exactly, that's my soapbox.
IDDQD.
What would Jesus do?
Is that what that stands for?
No, I don't know what it stands for, but it's the God mode and doom.
No.
Same thing, right?
What Jesus do?
Shoot demons with guns.
Doom I played was Doom on the touch bar of MacOS.
It was not a good, it was not a great experience, but it did run.
It was the only useful thing I saw on the touchbar.
Not one of Apple's greatest inundations.
This episode of Door Fortress Roundtable is made possible in part by Deckham Broadroo's 20-year fortress restoration service.
Got a dining hall that hasn't been redecorated since 2006.
Stockpiles arranged according to forgotten ancient customs.
A lever.
or nobody remembers installing.
Deck and Broaddrew specializes in modernizing venerable fortresses
while preserving all the historic charm, mysterious machinery,
and deeply questionable design choices.
Deck and Broaddrew, because after 20 years,
maybe it's finally time to fix that hallway.
So they also had a quality of life update.
They called it, I mean, what did they call it?
The Door Fortress Patch 53.16.
This was like a bait and switch.
I read the headline, and I, like, got really excited, really quick.
You thought it was magic.
20th anniversary, myth and magic, art and music, dwarf fortress patch, 53.16.
And I thought they were releasing the Myth and Magic update.
No, myth and magic is the name of a song.
I think.
Yeah, that was a teaser, wasn't it?
That was...
A new art.
Yeah. No, it was a bait and switch.
It was a red herring.
So, yeah, there's lots of quality of life improvements in there.
Like you, I did the same.
I thought for sure we were getting something.
Now, I knew it wasn't going to be the whole thing.
But I fell for the quick bait.
But hey, man, that's why you have a media team like Kid Fox to push yourself.
You know, like it's helping these guys, even if it's a little bit, like, disappointing when you think.
you're getting something you're not, but I, I knew. I knew it wasn't ready. I knew it was,
but also, you know, don't. And you know, I paid so much for that update. Well, I mean,
that's just it. It's not, they're not, we're not talking DLC here. Yeah. But I'm also a lot of
DLC absolutist. Like if you're working on a game and you've been schlepping out free updates for like
the better part of a number of years and you're like, hey man, I'm still working on this thing that
everyone's paid for. Can somebody help me out here? I'm doing, I'm doing, I'm making. I'm
more game. I think it's a reasonable thing to pay.
Anyway.
I like the second, third, and fourth bullet points in the release notes for Update 5316.
So if you will indulge me, I will go ahead and just read them.
I don't think that would be awesome.
Tavern goers will no longer order a drink from every single tavern keeper in a bar and drink them all,
causing them to die of acute alcohol poisoning.
Yeah, good call.
That is so good.
Tavern keepers will now refuse orders for drinks if the one ordering it is sufficiently drunk, if their personality allows.
Now, if their personality allows, is that the patron or is that the barkeep personality?
And finally, dwarves will exercise self-control and not order alcohol from tavern keepers when drunk, if their personality allows.
So no more, no more inebriated people drinking so much that they're not.
they kill themselves with beer.
That is so good.
Okay, listen, I liked my tavern keeper, and I had this hyena man tavern keeper for a while.
And if you don't know, hyena men have this problem that the hyena has the meanderer tag,
which means that if they don't really have a job that they have to do urgently or whatever,
they are super slow.
But it was very funny
Seeing the hyena man
Slowly approach the drink stockpile
Get a drink for
Like a visitor
And then as soon as the cup is full
He turns around and sprints
Through the entire
Tavern to give that person the drink
And then slowly walks back again
I did that
So they wouldn't
You know get too drunk
Because the Tavernkeeper takes
forever to serve a drink that work decently well.
But if you, for example, have a tavern keeper and, like, bards to entertain people,
you're going to have a bad time because people are going to die.
So.
For some reason, I just picture him walking backwards very slowly and very dramatically,
walking away very slowly.
Yeah, I don't know what his deal was, but it was definitely very entertaining.
to see him just walk slowly to the drinks and really quickly back from the drinks and just
sprint.
It's good to know that he can actually walk quickly.
But the thing in brackets, if their personality allows, is such a big deal because that means
if you pick the right tavern keeper, you will have a tavern keeper that still forces
alcohol on people.
That is a
big deal. If you get the right
tavern keeper, you can get
your guests so drunk
they can no longer walk.
That is amazing.
Have either of you had multiple tavern
keepers assigned to
a single tavern? I didn't even know
that was a thing. Oh yeah, yeah,
yeah, yeah. Definitely did.
Just for the sake of
this happening, you know, the tavern keeper
just zooming around and the
the tavern key purse, plural, zooming around, getting everyone drunk, I wanted to see it in action.
And it definitely works.
It also works with the bards, because sometimes the bards will also serve drinks.
Oh, I didn't know.
Or at least they used to.
And, yeah, it was difficult.
But it only works really well if you actually store drinks in the tavern.
Like if your tavern as a dry tavern, no drinks in the tavern, then it's going to be a little different, I think.
I don't sure if they actually go into the drink stockpile together from there.
They only serve drinks that are in the tavern, I think.
So, I don't know.
If you move down the list, there's an update that changed the user interface a little bit, and I very much noticed it.
And I was kind of wondering what the heck was going on.
Towards the bottom of the bullet points, click the bottom stockpile button.
Now goes directly to adding a new stockpile.
So before you would click the stockpile button that put you basically in stockpile mode,
and then you would have to click the button that says, you know, add.
And then you could draw your thing.
So I'm looking for that button to click to activate my rectangle.
And it was just already in that mode.
I kind of confused me for a little bit.
What I really thought was that it was a DF hack thing because I'm not using DF hack in my current fortress.
Or maybe it was, I'm not using the interface improvements.
So I thought that maybe that was a mod that I was using that was causing that.
But no, that was a part of the base game.
So that's an interesting update.
Let's see here.
Yeah, there were a couple that I noticed straight away, or at least I think I did.
There was one about stealing from like visitors will no longer steal your stuff.
All right.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Thanks for mention.
I was getting out of crazy.
Visitors should no longer steal fortress library books or fortress items.
That is huge because I have kept building my libraries a certain way to make sure that this doesn't happen.
The easiest way is just to have like two libraries and one actually stores the books and doesn't allow any kind of visitor.
And the other is just your writing hall doesn't store any books, just writing materials and allows visitors.
And then the people would come in there and like talk about writing a book, but not reading a book or stealing a book because this isn't like a public library, bro.
You can't just take that.
Thank you.
This is big.
It wouldn't report it either.
Like it wouldn't say such and such has been stolen necessarily.
I think sometimes it might, but it wouldn't always.
Because what I noticed one time is somebody was in the library reading a book, a visitor.
and then I think like a
like a giant
Ulm or something went in the library and scared everybody
and the visitor ran away and took the book.
Yeah.
So, jerk.
Yeah.
Of course, I had to kill their entire civilization
for that mistake. But hey, man,
you know, like,
punishment fits the crime.
Any other updates from this version
53.16 that stands out to you folks?
I wanted to say in the last episode,
I had said something about dinosaurs and blah, blah, blah, and then you quite rightly said,
are you sure you didn't click domesticated there?
And I said, oh, and you left me a bit speechless.
I did click domesticated, and that is why I had domesticated dinosaurs.
So that's the domestication of that.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I actually kind of like it, though.
It's kind of fun.
It's funny.
Whenever you said that during the livester, whenever we were actually recording it, I thought
that I sounded like...
I came off sounding a bit like a bit of an ass, but it was editing it.
It didn't come off that way, really.
Look, man, we don't want to.
This is not a fake news podcast, my friend.
We are fair and balanced here.
And I think that is exactly what the listeners demand of us.
Full transparency.
No, but for sure.
Yeah, it was like that.
But I actually kind of like them, although there are some that I do not understand how to contend with.
like you can get an ammonite,
which or in a trilobite,
which I thought both lived in water,
but if I put them in water,
then it says they're drowning and then they die.
So I don't know what to do with them.
They're basically like some sort of a quantum animal
that can only exist inside of a cage,
but the minute you take it out,
it suffocates.
So somebody else can help me with that.
I'm, I probably haven't spent enough time on it.
Yeah, no, that should be a, that is a water creature.
Yeah, that's interesting.
Maybe there was an old Harryhausen film that had trilobites that were walking the earth, you know, attacking people.
I felt so terrible because I was like, I zoned a little pit for them.
And then I was like, right, they can go in the lake right here.
It's perfect.
And I, then the dwarfs go grab them and throw them the lake and they all drown.
And I was like, well, don't I feel like a dick?
Oh, my God.
That reminds me of that one video of the person trying to rescue a turtle and throwing the turtle into the lake.
and the other person filming is like, bro, that's a turtle.
That's rough. That's rough.
Sidebar. I think in America, though, people use turtle, tortoise, and terrapin interchangeably,
but I know in other places, or maybe I do, or I did.
But anyway, that's what I thought.
Yeah, they're all shelled.
Americans out there.
Do you differentiate between a turtle, a tortoise, and a terrapin?
Please write in.
Let us know.
I don't think we do in Germany
which makes sense because I just used the wrong word
I meant a tortoise you know the one that walks on land
and doesn't have flippers
yeah yeah yeah yeah I think in the US people just
smooge them all together and it's just the shell thing
the dinosaur in a shelled creature
yeah the shelled creature
and our most common land animal that fits this description
here is called both a box turrets
turtle and a box tortoise.
Oh, for God's sakes. What are we doing in this country?
Man.
Oh, they're so cute. I love them. They're wonderful.
I used to stop on the roadway and help them get across so that they wouldn't get run over.
Because during certain periods of the year, they're migrating, getting ready to, either
they're just woken up from their hibernation or they're getting ready to hibernate, and they'll
be crossing the highways, and there'll be lots and lots of flat little box turtles.
Oh.
Yeah, it's very sad.
That is really sad.
We're rich with turtles here.
We've got lots of different kinds of water turtles.
We have the box turtles.
Yeah.
Lots of turtles in those rocks.
Well, go to do you see if Ammonites drown if you throw them in the water.
I don't know.
What is an ammonite?
I know it is a fossil.
An extinct creature.
Yeah.
I know it is a fossil that you find in rocks.
You've seen them.
They look like little circular things.
Oh, then not that little.
Sometimes.
Yeah.
I mean, the ones that we have in our fossils look pretty small, but they're like little spirally things.
It's like a squid that actually has a shell that is fish.
Is it kind of like a cuddlefish?
A cuttlefish, exactly.
Okay.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
With the shell.
Yeah, they're in lots of those pictures of where you see the,
never mind, I was about to go off on a tangent.
No.
Yeah, I think I know what you're.
Yeah, Korean snacks.
Think about that, like Korean potato chips.
They're really popular.
People in Korea eat cuttlefish.
There are some very interesting, interesting street food videos on YouTube for Korean street food.
It is pretty amazing the things that they cook and enjoy.
Yeah, I mean, you know, people really like those cuttlefish crackers or potato chips.
I mean, I get it.
They're delicious, but that is...
My budgie likes the bone.
The heart wants.
What's the heart wants?
I have one more item of the update list
because that actually makes things a little difficult at times.
Strange mood dwarfs will no longer make equipment types
from outside of this civilization.
So this means that your weapon maker can no longer make a lash
or what it is he's making, like a pike,
a two-handed great sword,
all these funny things that usually the humans come with.
That means if you are like me
and you want a Lasher squad of Lashar Dwarfs
or Morning Star Dwarfs,
then you will need to buy those.
The dwarfs?
They don't make it.
Dwarfs can't use Morning Stars anyway, can they?
Unless you use the Morning Star mod.
Oh.
If I am, though.
Is that true?
I've got a mod that allows them to use it, so I'm kind of assuming that it's true.
I use that one because Morning Star is like my favorite medieval weapon.
Oh, that makes sense.
Maybe I'm thinking of something else.
Hang on.
Morning Star.
Oh, my God, I can't write.
You look in the DF Wiki?
Yeah.
There's one that they missed.
Yeah, they should have called out the Door Fortress Wiki.
on that video because the Dwar Fortress Wiki, I think, is just as if not, more important than D.F. Hack to the proliferation of Dwar fortress, because it is the manual.
Yeah. Hats off, pour one on the floor for the Dwar Fortress Wiki.
Indeed, I'm all about the Dwarfortress Wiki.
Okay, so it says Morning Star.
Hans used average human. Well, that's not helpful.
I can see if I can get our ratings up by naming this podcast to have a clickbait title.
You know, Dwarf Fortress Wiki gets snubbed by the Adams brothers.
You'll never believe what happens next.
Go to war.
We're going to vibe-slop-code our own dwarf fortress game.
Okay.
So this is interesting.
The Morning Star says it is usable by goblins and humans.
single grasp for the average human,
and the same goes for the whip.
I don't really see, like, a big difference.
So Morning Stars should be usable by dwarfs, should they not?
No, I think we've even covered this on our podcasts.
We have probably done that,
but it makes sense that you want a moor that makes morning stars usable
because morning stars are pretty goddamn awesome, aren't they?
Yes, they are.
But my point still stands.
If you want more morning stars,
or you want a scourge or a whip or a halberd
or a great axe or a flail,
you're going to have to buy it from the humans.
So stay nice to your local human government in the game.
Yes.
So you're allowed to not.
Go ahead.
Cut.
Today's show is sponsored in part by the Great Garzini's 20-year monument works.
Has your fortress survived two full decades without being conquered, flooded, burned, or abandoned?
Then commemorate the achievement properly with an engraved obelisk, heroic statue, or unnecessarily enormous memorial hall.
Garzini's craftsmen will record your victories, your disasters, and every expedition leader you'd rather not discuss.
the great Garzini, because 20 years underground deserves to be carved in stone.
Okay, so let's move on now to the next topic that I didn't tell you folks about.
On the Tor Fortress Roundtable Discord server, there is a channel for Bloodline games,
and I am now taking part in a bloodline world.
So the community fortress warm beers, I'm not sure, I don't think that it's still active.
I think that we've moved on now to the community world called Fields of Dread.
And I have just started my turn for a fortress and Fields of Dread.
So the way this works is, is you get the save for two weeks, you do whatever you want to with it.
You can start up a fortress.
You can unretire someone else's fortress.
You can play an adventure mode.
but a couple things that we would like to see is that you acknowledge whenever dwarves or Densians from other fortresses that have come before show up in your world or in your in your play session.
And for my part, I'm renaming all the dwarves that become residents of my fortress after rock stars of the past, or at least musicians of the past.
Oh, nice.
And it kind of, I look at the portrait and I kind of take a look and see what.
What I think that what my first thought is, like, I've got a Jerry Garcia dwarf.
I've got a Dionne Warwick dwarf.
I've got a Senade O'Connor dwarf.
Does anything compare to that one?
Yes, nothing compares to the Sanate O'Connor dwarf at all.
I think that I'm going to have Jerry Garcia dwarf be my messenger so he can go out and take long, strange trips.
Is that one a necromancer?
But I'm bum.
Oh, I did the classic stupid.
In mine, I made the Necromancer, the captain of the guard.
Oh, how did that go?
I knew exactly how it was going to go, and I thought it'd be funny, and it was really funny.
It was as funny as you'd imagine.
So when they came back?
Everyone in the forts are a Necromancer.
Sorry, go ahead.
So whenever the deads were raised, were they friendly?
Did the Necromancer raise dead people that died in battle?
Yeah, yeah. They went down and they killed the blind cave ogre. And then the necromancer resurrected it. And then they killed it again. And then the arm got resurrected. And then the body got resurrected. And then it just kind of kept doing that until I made the necromancer not the head of the, I think. I think they would have just like continued spawning to until there was nothing left to respawn of that creature, I think. So the respond creatures were not friendly to the fortress?
No, it was instigil.
Yeah.
Interesting.
Interesting.
Because I had a necromancer raising dead members of my fortress, and they were productive members.
I even had my chief medical dwarf was a raised death zombie, and it was, she was working just fine.
I think that she's in one of the artwork from one of our previous episodes from last season.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I remember you mentioned that.
maybe it had to do with the fact that they were parts of your fortress and not like creatures,
animals, or guests?
It could be.
Yeah.
Her name was Ethel Mederick Blast, Dwarf Doctor, Death Zombie.
Aethel Blockade Block, the Omnal Shadow.
And in the picture that I snapped as she was diagnosing a patient.
So, yeah.
Your dead can be productive.
But I named my fortress.
I picked out a good name that I really liked.
It is Barry Wine, the sweet drink of youth.
It's a lovely name.
That's a nice name.
Yes.
Very poetic.
Yes, and reminiscent of my teen years.
Do you actually have Barry Wine and a fortress?
Not yet.
I've only had it for a few months, so we're still, we've only got seven dwarves.
We're still doing the initial, initial build.
There was an issue with the save whenever I first got it, and Criddle did some magic to it.
erase all the pending dig designations because it's like I downloaded the fortress I'm like guys
I I can't start a new fortress it's it says that there's one going and I can retire that fortress
but then when I retired it comes back I thought it was a bug in the release because apparently
there are some bugs in this newest release but crittle worked some magic and and fix the fortress
and now I have it and I am going to be playing that for the next two weeks so at our next
episode, my stewardship of the fortress should be done, and I can tell you all about what I did
with my fortress.
So since I have a deadline and I am kind of expected to try to do something at least interesting
with my stewardship of the world, I will be playing a lot of Dwar fortress over the next two
weeks or so.
So any listeners, if you would like to join the Dwar Fortress Roundtable, Discord server,
check out the Community Fortresses channels, hop onto the Fields of Dread.
channel and take a look and take a turn with the fortress.
You'll have two weeks to play with the fortress and do with it whatever you want and name your dwarves something cool so that everyone knows that a dwarf that was part of your fortress is visiting their fortress.
So I'm looking forward to it.
I've got some ideas.
I'm not going to talk.
Well, you know what?
I am going to talk about it.
No, I'm not going to talk about it because I may change my line.
Yeah, okay.
So it's a, it's a savage biome that is nearby a goblin fortress.
so it could get pretty ugly pretty soon.
So, you know, the best laid plans of mice and men, right?
That's a ban.
So, yeah, finally, I put my money where my mouth is
and actually started contributing to the community fortresses
on our Discord server.
That's awesome.
That's pretty nice.
I was AWOL all summer long.
I don't even think that I opened up the Discord server all summer long.
Sorry, folks.
My bad podcast host.
Yeah, it's, you know, as a fellow host, I'm going to say it's okay.
So I did get some commentary after the last episode dropped.
The people were kind of disappointed that we shortened,
that we had the tighter shorter episode.
So I don't know.
Maybe the 12 people who still listen to the show actually like to hear us ramble.
Oh, I can talk longer, people.
Yeah.
Don't you?
I mean, you know, we have, this is a wild idea.
Okay, this is a wild idea.
Maybe I'm cooking.
Maybe I'm not.
there's a voice channel in the Dwar Fortress Discord,
like the podcast Discord, I mean.
Just throwing out there, what if you want to hear us ramble
and we just go there and you can join, you can ramble with us.
How about that?
But for that, you need to join the podcast Discord.
And also for that, we need to actually get to.
on the voice channel because I don't think that I've ever been on it.
It's called Spreca Canale or something, isn't it?
It's got a different name.
No, that was the old, that's the private, the private, uh, private one.
Oh, that's it, does it say a voice channel?
That's just voice channel in German.
Yeah.
Right.
Yeah, no, I.
Sprockernali.
How do you say what?
Sprakkenale.
Sprakkenale.
Sprakkenali.
Sprakent.
As I butcher the German, the fine.
I, I,
Higgenhornen. That's my only German.
So if we do that, is it just going to be random?
I'm afraid to commit to anything.
Two to three in the way.
I wasn't trying to make us commit to anything.
I'm just like throwing out ideas.
You know, I'm just saying there is a voice channel.
So, you know, if I'm like free and you want to hear me ramble, just add me in the server and we can hang out.
I don't know.
Yeah.
Nice voice crime.
Cool.
All right.
Anybody have anything new and fun with dinosaurs with the new release happened to them?
Fun, fun, fun, fun for whom?
Either with all caps or not, you know.
Yeah, well, rightfully, the last episode we have already established that I currently go around and I just stab people, which is, you know, fun for me, less fun for them.
I've rolled a new adventure after the other died to mysterious circumstances
and I have decided that I'm going to do something else.
I have decided that I'm going to do a dinosaur play through.
This means, what that means is I will not interact with people in an intelligent way.
I will not wear armor.
I will not wear weapons.
I refuse to partake in civilization.
I force sprint after animals to hunt them down with my snouting.
and eat them right there.
And I have to say, that is some of the dumbest stuff that I've done in the adventure mode,
but it's so fun.
And also, I can't walk away from the stream that I live by because I don't have any way
to store the waterfall later.
So it's a dumb play-through, but it's super fun.
Well, it sounds like a simulation of just nature.
I have realized at some point that there's probably better, like,
dinosaur game that I could do this with, but
why?
This is fun enough.
But then you wouldn't be able to talk about it on the podcast.
That's true.
That's true.
I mean, I guess you could, but it wouldn't be
Dwar fortress content.
Well, we'll listen.
Dino Fortress.
Dino Fortress.
Coming soon.
Yes.
All right.
Have you got anything else to talk about, Tony, that you would like to add before we
wrap this one up?
I don't think so.
I'm still, uh, I'm still hopping around with different
forts. I did have the hilarious thing happened where I decided in this last fort that I was going
to tunnel straight down. It was one of the Arctic forts. And I thought, well, I'll just tunnel straight
down. And so I did that. And I tunneled straight into the underworld. Did you? My very first tunnel.
So that was a very, very short game. How far down did you have to go to get to it? I didn't even,
I don't know, pretty far. I mean, I just sent him straight down. Usually I just, I sent him straight down.
and then I hit the first cavern and then hit the second cavern.
Nope.
Straight through, my luck.
So, yeah, I mean, instantly, the pop-ups for the, oh, no, you've done something bad, whatever.
Yeah, that all happened, and then they came out.
What I don't know is, are they going to stay in the world and start roaming around,
or will it be contained to those tiles?
Can I resurrect that fortress at some point?
I don't know.
I can't partially actually answer that question.
the creatures that come from beyond
will not really wander off into the world.
I've opened a fortress
and I hope that at some point
I would see a clown somewhere in the legends
but it seems that as soon as your quote-unquote off-map
and you no longer have control of their fortress
they just plop their ass on the floor
and do nothing.
nothing. But as soon as you go in
with an adventurer, they're still there.
You know, they're just waiting for you.
Interesting. Yeah. I am I
wasn't sure if I killed the world.
The other thing is, man,
I would love boats. Because one of my
obsessions is like bridging continents.
I just don't like to have
maps with big, disparate
islands of populations where they
can't ever get in touch because
we don't have boats. I kind of like the
bigger continents where, worst case
scenario, I can build a, I don't know,
Constantinople or something and have a choke point between continents. That's, that's kind of what I like.
But anyway, that's all I'm thinking about right now for my fort. How not to Insta destroy it.
So you hit the circus before you got to the third cavern layer? Is that what you said?
I just went straight down. I don't know what I did. I just basically, straight down. Yeah, I think I missed
everything. I just, I think it was a, like, I've never done that before. I didn't know if, I guess in my
head, I'd always thought that the circus stuff was locked behind progression gates.
I don't think that's true.
Yeah.
Well, I know that you can mess with the, at least I thought I was from messing with the
World Gym parameters.
I compressed my locations of the cavern layers because I got to like through three
cavern layers and 30 Z levels, you know, whenever I was playing with the previous world.
So I don't know.
Maybe I should play around with that a little bit more.
I still have never seen clowns.
I've never seen adamantine in the steam release.
I've never found it.
And I'm kind of obsessed with trying to look now.
Okay.
I've seen Adamantine in the steam release.
I think it was a steam release.
I'm pretty sure it was.
I've been told that I've gotten close to the walls with studded gems.
So I've gotten that thing.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that I found it around one of us digging around the magma seat.
So I could be mistaken.
One thing that you can always count on from this podcast is inaccuracy.
We are often inaccurate.
But we do issue retractions and corrections.
Absolutely.
We depend on Cunningham's law.
That's right.
That's right.
Maybe we should call this Cunningham's pod.
Our entire interaction with listeners is based on that.
Even a broken clock is right twice a month.
Hey, that could be our same.
Does that we come out twice a month?
Whoa.
All right.
Let's wrap this one up then.
Let's wrap it.
Let's wrap it.
Cool.
Again, if you haven't checked out the 20th anniversary video,
please check it out.
It is a hoot.
It is just so much fun watching Tarn and Zach play through the old version of Dwar Fortress
and to talk about the old days and be surprised by the things that they actually had
in the game at the time that they released it.
So check it out.
Yes.
So till next time, this is the gang at Dwarfortress Roundtable.
Wishing everybody, happy digging, right?
Yeah, dig deep.
Get those dinosaurs.
Get dynos.
Take the dinosaurs deep.
And that wraps up this episode of Dwarfortress Roundtable.
