Hello, I'm Earl Stewart. I welcome you to Earl Stewart on Cars, a live talk show all about how to buy, lease, maintain, or repair your car without being ripped off by a car dealer.
With me in the studio is Nancy Stewart, my wife, co-host, and a strong consumer advocate, especially for our female listeners.
We also have Rick Kearney, an expert on how to keep your car running right.
I dare you to ask a question that Rick can't answer about the mechanics or electronics of your car.
Also with us is my son, Stu Stewart, our link to cyberspace through Facebook, YouTube, text messaging, and our encrypted anonymous feedback service.
Stu is also the Spymaster Director of our mystery shopping report.
He dispatches our secret shopper weekly to an unsuspecting car dealership.
And now, on with the show.
Good morning, everybody.
Well, I wish you could have followed us to the studio.
I love live radio.
and Nancy and I just flew in the door here.
Bad weather in South Florida in some areas and real stormy out there.
So you're going to slow down, and we did slow down,
so we just barely got here on time.
Rick would have taken over.
I texted Rick and said, just in case.
So here we are.
Earl Stewart on Cars.
We're here for you, new listeners.
And I hope we have a lot of you out there.
I hope this show is gaining popularity, but this is a show.
It's basics.
We're really basic about how to buy or lease a car without being taken advantage of by your car dealer.
Now, I hasten to say that more of you are listening to the second reason for this show is how to maintain and repair your car without being taken advantage of.
the automobile retail both service and parts and the car itself truck whatever they have a monopoly and I say they the car dealers and it's a strange situation I mean you go buy a loaf of bread you've got a lot of choices you're going to buy a TV set a dress or a pair of pants or something there's competition with a
The car dealers, it's a little bit different.
They have a monopoly.
You can only buy a new car, now there are some exceptions, but basically, you can only buy
a new car through a franchise new car dealer.
That means that the manufacturer, be it Ford or Toyota or Hyundai, they have to give you
a contract, an agreement.
They're not easy to come by.
And you make a lot of, you agree to do what they want you to do.
and vice versa, to some extent.
So when you have a controlled product in terms of where you can buy it,
you're asking for trouble.
And you've got it, and you've had it for 100 years ever since Henry Ford.
So that's what the show is all about.
I'm a car dealer, and I've been one for over 50 years.
I've got 50th anniversary of my Toyota dealership.
we're having our celebration party next month at November and before that for 10 years
or so I had other car dealerships I've been doing this for over 60 years I'm kind of
like a turncoat I'm a trader I went over to the other side the other side is you
the customer the buyer can I have my little lumber sheet do we have that
round here where I give my numbers out because I can't believe it or not I don't
remember the numbers. So if you could get me the telephone numbers, I'm going to ask you to call
the show. 877-960-99-60. You can text us at 772-497-6530. Don't forget your anonymous
feedback.com. Now, how am I going to explain that to people when I tell them, I've been doing this for 20
years? And they say, wait a minute, you've been doing this for 20 years, and you don't remember the
telephone number.
It makes up for everything else
you remember.
877-960-9-6-0.
I actually wrote it down.
If you're streaming us, I wrote it down.
I don't know why.
I guess if you don't take the time to memorize,
and I just never did.
I do this once a week, and I always ask
somebody what the show number is.
Anyway, back to the basics.
The reason we like that time,
telephone number so much, and there are a myriad of other ways you can communicate with us.
I'm going to get to those in a minute.
But 877-960-9960, write it down, because we know the data shows.
The two-hour show, almost nobody sits out there for two hours and listens or watches our show.
You listen for about 15 minutes, that's the average.
you go about your life you may be come back later if we're lucky but oftentimes you don't so we've
got about a 15-minute window to chit-chat if that's what we can do we love the chit-chat we love
your calls we prepare for this show nancy and i we're up at 5 a.m. preparing for this show we've
got the automotive news we got chat gbt we got all sorts of references consumer reports
and we're taking notes and we're making a list of things that we want to talk about,
and then we kind of rush into the show, and we put this number out,
877-960-99-60, that's 877-9-60-9-6-0.
And, Nancy?
I think you left out your very important friend.
Chat, GBT, GBT.
There you go.
Oh, right.
You know, I call him coach.
We have, he calls me the professor.
I'm afraid to talk.
What do I call you?
I can't say that on the air.
Thank you.
Anyway, the calls, personalities, we know so.
We have friends, good friends over the ears who call this show.
And so, I don't need to tell you, you're a human being.
We're all human beings.
You know, when you talk to somebody in your last,
language and they can understand your language.
You talk back and forth, and I forgot to put my phone on Do Not Disturb.
So that's right into my air now.
That's what happens when you rush into the show.
So at any rate, we're going to prioritize your calls.
If you call, Nancy has a laptop.
Yeah, a laptop sitting there, and she'll see the numbers.
and she will wave at us, Rick or me or my son, Snu.
He comes in around 2 o'clock, around 9 o'clock.
Few wishes.
And we stop and we take your call.
And so please call.
We're pretty good about answering the calls.
I won't say we're perfect,
but sometimes we get caught up in things.
We have fine lines and we try to keep them open at all times.
Our goal is not to have a, you get a busy signal.
And our goal is not to have you have to wait too long.
So please call us at 877-9-60-99-60, for whatever reason.
I mean, you can ask us advice.
You're going to buy a Hyundai.
You're going to buy a Toyota.
Or you already bought a Buick and you're trying to find somebody that can diagnose the problem
or you already bought something else.
And that's what it's all about.
It's a back-and-forth dialogue.
Well, we look for you.
Now, a lot of you folks, I'm going to have to get the text number.
So what's the text number?
It's 775.
772?
Oh, 497.
6530.
I'm old.
My memory's gone.
772.
Oh, you're just a child.
Are you 50?
Uh-huh.
Is anyone going to tell me the number?
772, 472, 497, 6530.
We're in our 80s.
You're a baby.
I bet Nancy's got that written down over there.
I'm only just out to 60, though.
Anyway, for you timid folks, 772-497-6530.
Okay?
And that way, Rick will get it, Stu will get it, somebody's going to get it.
And then a little later on the show, we'll say, how about text?
And we get the text.
We usually get all the texts.
Now we have another one, and I remember this.
number because it's not a number it's a link we have something called anonymous feedback
and anonymous feedback is just what it sounds like privacy that's a buzzword of the 21st century
we we don't have enough privacy right people are looking at us taking pictures of us recording us
we hate it we get in the car we got instruments that are measuring how fast we're going
privacy private so you want privacy you got privacy and the
Just a link, you can write this down, the link is Your Anonymous Feedback.com.
Y-O-U-R-A-N-O-N-Y-M-O-U-S feedback, just the way it sounds, dot com.
Your Anonymous Feedback.com.
Now, I swear to God, I'll stick my money in my life on it.
We don't know who you are.
You can be, you know, you can be anybody.
You can be a car dealer.
I'm hoping car dealers will talk to us because they don't.
They don't like us and they try to ignore us.
Car sales people, any employee of a car dealership,
but anybody who wants their privacy.
And tell us what you think.
It'll be on a link, we'll read it,
and we don't really edit it or we don't,
if you want to use a nasty word, we probably won't say that,
But we'll say bleep so the audience will know your intent.
So we want constructive criticism.
In fact, we'll even take destructive criticism.
This show is unlike any you've listened to or watched in your life.
I know that sounds like a grandiose statement.
But if you doubt it, I'll tell you something that'll make even you believe it.
We do something nobody, nobody but nobody.
does a mystery shopping report.
Now, that's just what it sounds like.
How many of you remember Mike Wallace
on 60 Minutes?
Boy, I tell you what,
he's my hero.
If you saw him,
he just burst into a company somewhere
and everybody knew him
because he was famous
and he would say,
I want to talk to the president of the company.
And he would say,
why are you doing this?
Why did you do that?
I had pictures of you.
doing this it was an expose on live television we do the same thing we have a mystery
shopper we refer to her anonymously as agent lightning and every week she goes into a
car dealership somewhere she can be in Florida she can be in Tennessee she can be
in Pennsylvania usually Florida and we go in and we pretend to buy or lease a car
and we report back to you her experience and then we ask you
to vote on it. That's great. That's the last half hour of the show. We'll read the mystery
shopping report and you'll have your opportunity to vote on it. Unless I forget, our coolest followers
are our YouTube followers. YouTube.com forward slash Erlon Cars. YouTube.com forward slash Erlon
cars. Rick monitors that personally.
Kearney and I have to say this every week because he gets to the show without anybody
most of the people out there that have questions are questions after you bought the car
having to do with the maintenance and the repair and so on and so forth so we have a
he has a huge following and a big chunk of those who are on YouTube posting on
YouTube and then not only do we have people posting questions on YouTube but we have
loyal
what's the word
they're like part of the shell
we've got a guy
by the name of Donovan
who I hope
he doesn't decide
to go into competition
with us
because he could have
Donovan on cars
and probably put
us out of business
the guy knows his stuff
he does his research
and there's not
a month goes by
I can squeak by
a week or two
but he always finds out
something I screwed up on
and he comes
and calls me
on it. Now, I get temporarily a little bit irritated, and then I realize that's what it's all
about. Total transparency and honesty. And if we on this show can admit we're wrong, then we can
certainly say that the car dealers out there, we are car dealers, but we can also say that the
car dealers are out there or wrong. So if you have any kind of a problem with the car, you can go
to YouTube.com, 4 slash Roan Cars, and put it on there, and Rick will see it, or you can
call the show, just act for Rick Kearney.
Rick?
Yeah, Donovan says, I have three jobs already.
I don't need a fourth, left out loud.
Oh, God.
I told you it was, Brian.
Three jobs.
Oh, my God.
Now, that's good news.
Are you CEO of all the companies?
I'm willing, if he isn't, he's one of those guys.
that stays in the background,
and he's more important than the CEO,
because he's the guy that teaches the CEOs
how to handle the issues.
I know the time.
Well, anyway, I've been yacking forever.
Nancy's glaring at me over there.
I have to tell you a little bit about Nancy.
Oh, no.
Not that part.
I'm not going to tell them about that part.
She is a female advocate,
and she has got a following on this show.
You would not believe of ladies.
half the show
that listened and called in
now we're ladies
when we started this show
many years ago
we didn't have anybody
it was like an old boys club
you know guys in their cars
that's the way it's been for a long time
I started to say centuries
it has been almost a century
I mean
but guys love cars
but women buy cars
I guess they love cars too
but they're far more practical
and you'll find that women
and make better selections, tactical selections.
They know the prices, they know the competitive issues,
they read the consumer reports, and they just call this show
and Nancy is their hero, and she should be.
And she also monitors all the incoming calls.
So I want to turn the microphone over to Nancy Stewart.
She's not only my co-host, but my wife,
and she founded the show with me 20 plus years ago.
So, Nancy, the microphone is all yours.
Thank you.
Good morning, everyone.
And getting right to the show, $50 for the first two new lady callers.
$50 for the first two new lady callers.
And guess what, ladies?
These car dealers, big mistake ignoring women.
We run the show.
financially we have a huge impact on the auto industry therefore we need to be recognized your voice
must be heard so give us a call toll free this morning let us know how you feel 877 960
9960 geez we have so much to get to so I'm going to make my speech short I've talked about
disenchantment before and basically you know it's just a matter of falling out of love with a person
a product a situation all of the above and right now that is what the consumer the customer is feeling
disenchantment and give us a call share your story whether you leased whether you purchased a new car
a used car we would love to hear from you the text number also
is 772-497-6530 and remember to jot that number down because we want to hear from you
in regards to our mystery shopping report as you will know we do every week and also you know
the gallop pool that I check out in so many other sources that I didn't realize I had access to
It's just so sad that the car dealers, the auto dealers, the whole thing.
We are at the bottom of the Gallupol.
Do you know who we're in bed with?
I bet you know.
Politics, politicians.
And that's a sad state of affairs.
And guess what?
Use car?
The used car department comes in.
so low on the Gallup pole, it just makes you scratch your head. It's so easy to do business
the right way. It generates so much traffic in your direction. Transparency, that is major.
It's easy to satisfy a customer rather than take advantage of a customer. Speaking of
taking advantage of, ladies again, give us a call toll-free.
And our number here is 877960 and I do want to let you know you can win yourself $50 this morning, $50 for the first two new callers.
And we had a special occasion where we had to fly to New York.
And guess what, ladies, we had a female pilot.
I was tickled.
I really was tickled.
And for the short amount of time that the two of us spoke,
it was like as if we'd known each other all our lives.
And by the way, she was very young.
And she said to me, when I was in class, the teacher came in and said,
I'll get this.
Oh, a girl.
And I responded to Shelby.
you mean you weren't asked if they want to show you a makeup mirror?
Guess what?
Sometimes things just, well, they don't change like we want them to.
And this is a 21st century and we're still dealing with the boys' club.
I'll leave you with that thought.
Back to the recovering car dealer.
Yeah, that's, you're just forced a confession out of me.
I have evolved.
And in my book, as a lot of you know, regular listeners,
Confessions of a recovering car dealer.
I have to mention that it's available on Amazon.
No, I'm not trying to sell you a book.
Well, I'm trying to sell you a book,
but I want the money to go to Big Dog Grants Rescue,
and that's our pet charity here on Erlon Cars.
Yes, ma'am.
Oh, I got two calls.
Okay.
Okay.
That book that Earl was talking about is so interesting.
And that was quite some time that he wrote that book.
And guess what?
It's still on the top shelf.
You can always refer to it.
So take advantage of that.
We're going to go right to the phones, and we're going to talk to our favorite caller,
and that's Roadrunner, Steve.
Thank you for waiting.
Good morning, everybody.
Welcome back.
Morning, Steve.
Thank you.
Okay.
two weeks ago
you had the guy was talking about
his Chevy band with the paint peeling off
and everything yes
okay I was in public parking lot
and I happened to park next to a GMC white band
with the paint pull it up
like two by three feet
squares okay
so I tried calling but it was too busy
okay the other thing is
when's the party in November
say again
your anniversary party
in November 18th now this coming November
50 years what time
6 to 8 oh Nancy's a planner so what time
6 to 8 6 to 8
Earl start to 12 15 6 in the morning
yes she's a real
junkster and there's no liquor
and now and we're gonna have food
and no liquor but we'll have a lot of food
and uh okay so it's 6 that night then right
Yeah, I know, yeah.
Okay, I got a question for Rick.
The other day I'm in my car, I see an ant.
I kill it, right?
Next thing I know, I see start seeing more ants near the driving side door and on the side of the dashboard.
Like, how do you get rid of them?
I ran into this myself.
I parked under a tree in my yard one time for a while, and, oh, man, my favorite is the race.
dry fumigators.
They're the ones that
they come like in a two or three pack
and it's like a plastic cup.
You put like a quarter inch of water
in the bottom of it
and then drop the unit back in
and it makes this dry white smoke.
It leaves no residue
but it will get
all the nukes and crannies.
The thing is
wherever you're parking your car
you want to treat the ground around it
because the ants have got to be coming in
from somewhere.
Right.
So you want to make sure
you treat that area around there, but use those dry smoke fumigators.
Very dry smoke.
Yes, every nook and cranny in that car, it will just fill them right out.
And you'll get a little bit of an odor for about an hour afterwards.
After you open it up, let it air out.
But it'll clear away pretty quick.
Like everything else, you're going to buy on Amazon, right?
Yeah, absolutely.
And these are phenomenal.
Okay, I use this stuff called stem
It's pet friendly
It's don't have the harsh chemicals
It's usually
Uh natural stuff
Right
The only drawback with sprays and stuff like that
Is they don't always get down in
Like
In behind areas
Like behind the dash
Where the ants may be making a nest
And if they've got a nest with eggs in there
You're going to wind up with recurring generations of them
Oh, okay
I'm trying
I think they're very tiny
I think I put my thumb on one
I thought it was dead
It's still running the muck
Yeah it's like those little sugar ants
Yeah
You're not leaving your lollipop sticks
On the floor
No I got no food in the car
I know all about that
Okay
Okay
With that
But I I don't I was in a horror movie
I'm like what the heck is going on here
Yeah
He just kept coming and coming out
Yeah
Hey, Steve, tell me something.
Do you, what do you have inside your, well, that's not quite the question I wanted to ask.
I'll be straightforward.
Do you eat in your car?
No.
Do you drink in your car?
No.
Okay.
Case closed.
I plead to fit.
Yeah, I don't do none.
I don't even keep, you know how people keep that when they go through a drive-to, they keep those stupid little packets in the car?
a ketchup and mustard.
I don't even have that in it.
Oh, you're amazing.
My road money keys and my
driving glasses and my
meeting glasses. That's it.
You run a tight ship, Steve.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
With that.
Keep it clean.
Can I buy that stuff at an auto part store?
I got to go on Amazon.
You'll find
to, like, Home Depot,
Walmart,
publics might even have them
drugstores might have it
like Walgreens or CVS
Oh okay
But Walmart Target
Home Depot Lowe's
Do I got to cover the seats or anything
With a plastic bag or something?
No because it's not a liquid
It doesn't put out a wet spray
It's a dry smoke
And this stuff just
It literally will go to every
everywhere and it will just work
its way through.
Okay, do you put it in the front seat
or in the back of the car?
Well, it's like a plastic cup
so I would set off like two of them
inside the car and just put them on the floorboard
one in the front seat on the floorboard
one in the back seat down on the floorboard.
Okay.
It's probably going to go on fire, right?
Put like a towel or a paper plate or something
underneath it because it will develop
a little bit of heat.
Oh, leave the doors open when you do that?
Nope.
Close it all up.
Okay, and it's not going to stink until I get in?
After it airs out, it'll be fine.
All right.
Call us back and let us know how it works, Dave.
Yeah, I just hope I remember to get out of the car after I put the meeting.
Too funny.
Hey, Steve, do you have any other questions?
No, that's it.
Everybody stays safe and well.
Thank you, Steve.
We love hearing from you, Steve.
Give us a call again.
You're one of our favorite callers.
We're going to go to Jeannie, who's a first-time caller,
and she's calling us from West Palm Beach.
Good morning, Jeannie.
Good morning.
Oh, I'm glad you could take my call.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you for supporting women and helping me build a platform.
We do appreciate you, and all the women that are listening are listening real,
real close right now to what you have to say. And you just won yourself $50.
Catching.
When you're finished, when you're finished speaking, if you'll leave your contact information
with the control room, Jeremy will take your information. He'll give it to me, and I'll get
that check out to you. Well, thank you so much. That's wonderful. Thank you. What can we do
for you this morning? Well, I am looking forward to buying the new model of
the Lexus E.S. Hybrid. I've never had a hybrid before, and we're down in Florida for six months
of the year, so that car will be in storage for about six months in Illinois. We always put on a
trick charger on a regular car, a regular battery, but we don't know what to do with a hybrid.
Even more important, because the hybrid battery is a much smaller battery. With hybrid cars,
the high voltage motor battery
is actually what will crank the engine
so the 12 volt battery
is actually a much smaller unit
and it's only there to turn on the relays
and power up that hybrid battery
so it's more likely
to be subject to parasitic draws
and to lose power because of that
so what you want to do is the same thing
locate the 12 volt battery
and just hook up your trickle charger
just like you would any other car
Oh, okay. And then what about the lithium battery?
Won't even need to worry about that.
Really?
Yeah, because it'll hold its charge.
Because when you shut the car off, the main relays actually will shut down, and that battery is completely isolated to where it has no power draw on it whatsoever.
Okay. I did read online that you shouldn't have it charged to 100%.
You should bring it down to maybe like 50%.
Is that a concern?
Well, that's the lithium battery itself, the main drive battery,
and you really don't have a whole lot of control over that yourself
unless you're using a plug-in hybrid
and you were to charge it up full on the plug-in source.
And with that, I wouldn't worry about it
because the computer is going to watch over that battery
and it's going to keep that battery at its optimal level.
The main thing I can say there is trust the computers that operate that car.
They will keep that battery at its appropriate level.
Oh, okay.
Jane, here's a little tip for you, too.
Is this your first Lexus?
No, we've had the Lexus before.
I love it.
Okay, great.
The best car in the world.
When you service the car, meaning when you have to pay for warranty work, you go to your Lexus.
dealer but when you service the car compare the service with a Toyota dealer
nearest you because typically the toilet dealers service costs are a fraction of
what the Lexus dealer will charge yourself offer oil changes and tire rotations
and balances alignments routine maintenance that you will need on your vehicle
you can go to your toilet dealer and save as much as 50% of
with the Lexus dealer with Georgia.
And the same thing holds true for all luxury brands.
Because, for example, if you have an infinity, you can go to a Nissan dealer.
If you have an Accura, you can go to a Honda dealer.
If you have a Cadillac, you can go to a Chevrolet dealer.
Go to the manufacturer of your electric car, because they also usually have a lower price car.
But the technicians and the way of working on the cars is identical.
Wow, great advice. I did notice the dealership had pretty high charges.
Compare the prices, and you'll find out that you'll save quite a bit.
Jeannie, I have to add my two cents, I'm going to tell you, what a great selection.
You know, what a great choice. That Lexus Hybrid, it is amazing. What caught my eye was the resale value,
and Lexus Hybrids tend to retain their value.
Don't you love hearing that?
Because when you drive off the lot, your car depreciates in so many ways.
But the Lexus, it comes out on top as far as a resale.
And that's amazing over time.
Fuel efficiency, I'm sure you know all about that.
That's the reason you picked the hybrid.
The reliability, amazing.
Lexus has a reputation for building reliable.
real most the biggest reliability which means fewer repairs music to my ears do you love it yeah definitely
i just hope the new model since it's so new that it's going to be as wonderful as the old yes was
you know the you know the lexas has the aerodynamics and everything about it is such a sophisticated
look a luxury look it's a beautiful vehicle and then you know you know the lexas has the aerodynamics and everything about it is such a sophisticated look a luxury look it's a beautiful vehicle
and then you get all the amenities with it.
Yep, thank you.
Well, I hope we answered all your questions.
Do you have anything else to add?
No, I don't.
Okay.
Well, you go ahead and collect that $50.
Okay, thanks.
And you can do me a favor.
Spread the word.
Ladies are very, very important part of the auto industry,
and we spend a lot of money, a lot more than men.
So keep that in mind.
And thank you for calling.
Thank you.
Okay, we're going to go to, we're going to go to Deck.
He has been holding for quite a while, and Deck is calling us from Boca.
Good morning, Dick.
How are you?
You there, Dick?
Welcome to the show.
Yo, you Dick.
Okay, we are going to go to John.
John. And John is calling us from guess where? Palm City.
Hey, John. Good morning. Welcome back. Thank you.
I want to speak about the good and bad and the ugly.
Oh, boy.
The bad news is auto supplier that suddenly won bankrupt called First Brands,
AutoLite Fram. They bought up 18 different companies in the last few years,
26,000 people laid off.
They did as much as $5 billion in sales last year.
Wow.
How do you think that this is going to affect the auto supply market
with the bankruptcy of this major corporation?
Well, in the first place, you know, bankruptcies,
do you know if it's a chapter 10 or chapter 11?
No, they're closed.
It's a total bankruptcy that closed the,
down completely. Okay, well, that would be, in which case, that's definitely going to affect
a large supplier. The prices would go up. You can, you know, chapter 11, you can be,
you can operate under the supervision of the court, but I think it's a chapter five. I'm trying
to get my numbers messed up, but that sort of bankruptcy sounds like what they did. So it'll
have a negative impact. It's, it's like anything else. There's always other supplies.
and you shop and compare we get lazy I do you do we all get lazy I'm lazy
with Amazon and I love Amazon because you can't buy anything there well Amazon
knows I'm lazy and and every now and then I look at a price I say what and I go
I check it with Walmart or or Target or some other place and they really can
hose you if you get in a habit
and they know they will slowly raise the prices.
So that's what's going to happen with less supply, higher demand, higher prices.
And it'll be filled pretty quick.
I guarantee you there are a lot of suppliers out there that will fill that hole talking about prices.
These tariffs are terrible on prices.
So it's not a consumer's ballgame at all.
It's the manufacturers and the retailers, and we're at their mercy, us consumers.
just a fast question to Rick
the new car sales are down
a lot of reasons
$7,500
EV credit is off in tariffs
but the used car market
including companies like Kavana
others are way up in sales
how does Rick feel about a person
buying a used
police car
or a taxi cab
on the used car
market.
Earl has said in the past
the right used car
can be a much better option
than any new car.
He has said that, and I agree
wholeheartedly, however,
taxi cabs and police
cars, I
would be very cautious of, for
one simple reason.
They are usually driven...
I know a lot of police cars now are
take-home vehicles. However,
they are usually driven a lot of just low, slow miles, they're just continuous use.
They don't always get the best maintenance.
And let's just say they get a lot of abuse from the drivers.
They are just really run to the ends of the earth sometimes.
I'll jump in there.
I'd be very cautious with one.
Let me jump in there.
It depends.
Like everything else, look at a police car or look at a taxi cab, just like you were in any other car.
We have odometer laws.
So the odometer law is pretty well enforced.
And the police, of course, are not going to be rolling back their odomers, I don't think.
No, no.
I've been surprised before.
And the taxicabs, first of all, taxicabs are a vanishing species now with Uber and Lyft.
Nancy and I just got back from New York City
and we didn't see very many taxi cabs
compared to the last time we were there
we saw
Uber rules the roost
and Uber drivers take care of their cars
they own the car so they take care of it
rental cars used to have a bad wrap as a used
car but to buy a car it hurts
or buy a rental car today
the rental car companies finally figured out
maintain the car properly
and turn it over
don't put
110,000 or 300,000 miles on the car
put enough miles on it
so that when you sell it you can get a fair return
on your investment so I would
say if you're going to buy
any car be a taxi cab
if you can find one I don't
think you'll find the use taxi cab anymore
but a Uber car
a lift car or a
What was the other one?
A rental car.
A rental car could be a great buy.
In fact, I would say if I were going to buy a used car, I'd go to a Hertz lot.
I'd go to an enterprise lot because their cars are better.
Rental cars are better now than the cars that you don't know who drove them.
That I agree, wholeheartedly, on the rentals.
And the average person doesn't take care of a car like a modern rental company takes care of it.
Yeah. And, of course, the number one rule to follow, have an independent mechanic of your choice, do a full inspection on the car.
Even if it costs you a couple hundred bucks, you'll be a lot safer off that way.
Yeah, good idea.
The problem is they hide it. The Florida title of one time, the old title, said formally used as a taxi cab, formally used as a rented car, police car.
Now, if you speak to a Uber driver, they don't even own it.
It's a rental company that they rented from.
So on the Florida title, it's not going to tell you that it was formerly used as a Uber driver.
Yeah, that's an important point.
But again, if this is your bread and butter and these Uber drivers and lift drivers, that's how they make their living.
And at our dealership, we service a lot of Uber cars and lift cars.
And these guys take care of their cars.
I mean, you know, if you're a mechanic, you take care of your tools.
If you're an Uber driver, you take care of your car.
So I know exactly what you're talking about because you and I are the same age, John.
And when I first got in the business and I first started to work for my father back in the 60s,
I got in a lot of trouble with my father
because I appraised a car for a trade-in
and it was a police car
and I missed it and it was wet
I couldn't see the fact that it actually
if you looked at the paint carefully you could have told
and I over-appraised it by like $1,000
and I learned my list in the hard way
but that was back in the day
that was back in the 60s. Today
a police car is taken care of
They're maintained properly, and they're a good buy.
But it's not only the odometer reading.
These cars, a lot of them are idling a good part of the day.
Even the police car, they're waiting for a call.
They keep it running because of the radio.
And that's the problem, too.
Rick will tell you a car that's constantly idle and not used regularly, you know, for a mile per hour.
It could be another problem, too.
It used to be on older cars, but with the newer cars, the tolerances on the engines are so much tighter that that's not as big an issue as it used to be.
I would not consider that a deal breaker, in my opinion.
Okay.
Thank you, as long as the car, and especially police car, you're going to have maintenance records that are available.
And you can check all those to make sure that it's, you know, that it's had regular maintenance.
And if it has, you could find one that's in great shape and has low enough miles that you can work a really great deal.
The big thing with a police car, of course, would be the paint job, and you're going to have to paint over a police car.
And you want to be sure whatever they did to cover up the police car decals and whatnot, that they did a good job on that.
one fast thing you mentioned today's modern callers the greatest even the one that text the knowledge of them like donovan a caller like marty i would love to go one thing with marty i would love to go with him keeping my mouth shut and go to a dealer like napleson
yeah there would be an experience in my life with marty and marty dealing with nathan and i'd be a witness just to listen
Isn't you amazing?
Oh, my God.
Oh, it would be an experience too bad.
I couldn't videotape it.
Thank you guys again.
We'll try to send that up for you, John.
Thank you for the modern people that call, and that's what make the show what it is.
Thank you.
Absolutely.
Okay.
Thank you, guys.
Thank you, John.
John, thanks for calling.
We love hearing from you.
Have a great weekend.
Say hi to Irene.
We're going to go to.
David, who's calling us from Margate.
Good morning, David.
Yes. Hi.
Question for Rick.
I have a 2005 Toyota Camry, and it was leaking, and I finally figured out that it's the door weather stripping.
Okay.
So, and I kind of came down to that fact because I actually put a tarp over it and left open the
under the windshield, you know, so the water could run down in there and make sure we
It wasn't coming in that way, and it didn't leave because it's all right by the door jam on the passenger side.
Okay.
So I got a price on the weather stripping, the outside weather stripping, on the passenger side.
And then I was told it would take about 30, 40 minutes to put on.
Does that sound about right?
Yeah.
Okay.
Second question, well, the thing is with the ants.
I had this problem because I used where I used to park.
They leaves would fall or they would come from the tree that was right next to my car after a heavy rain.
And you would see them in the door jam, and sometimes they'd get in the car.
CERTO, try CERTO first.
And you can actually get the original CERTO, you know, to stuff with a sweet ant.
You can get that at Ace Hardware because Publix used to carry and Walmart used to carry it, but I don't see the drops.
And if you put the drops right where you see the ants, and if they go for it, that should take care of it.
They'll take it back to the nest.
And the other thing that works sometimes, if it would knock the,
if a heavy rain would knock the nest, you know, on the car,
and then they would come in and build a nest under the engine.
If you go through a car wash, that would generally wash that away, too.
So you might try that.
And you can actually put a couple drops on the carpet in a hidden place
if you see a few inside.
So if you want to try that first before you try bomb in the car and all that,
that might work.
It's always worked for me.
Yeah, that's some great advice.
Also, somebody else on YouTube here would recommend it also,
park in a different spot for a while so that you're away from whatever the source of the ants are.
Right, but, you know, I had to park in my one spot.
Yeah, yeah.
And it only happened twice a year, you know, dependent on the season.
And also, after all the leaves fell,
leaves would be, like, under and around my car.
And they would be in there, and that's, you know, they would swarm or,
different times of the year. So I usually found
it was twice a year that I would get them, so
I was prepared. Yeah, and especially
like right now in South Florida,
we have had some phenomenal
rain the past couple weeks
and it's, the ground
is getting saturated. So of course
the insects that live underground are
moving up to the surface and
they're looking for any place they can find to move
into. Can I tell a story
that's got absolutely nothing to do with
cars? That's your show, I think so.
I have the right to do that.
So talking about ants, I flashed back to when I was younger and my three sons who were in the dealership with me now were younger.
And they were kids.
And so we took a trip down the Colorado River, camped out.
It was really cool.
Go down the river on the raft.
Then we would make a fire and put our sleeping bags out.
What I didn't know, there's a lot of ants in the Grand Canyon.
And we put our sleeping bag on the ground.
and the next thing you know, the ants are coming.
So we had repellent for mosquitoes or things like that.
So I've been very proud of this for a long time.
I took some insect repellent and I sprayed all the way around my sleeping bag.
And I jumped into my sleeping bag and I was the only one that wasn't bit up by ants the next morning.
I'm very proud of that.
Nice story.
You didn't help your kids with that?
you just let your kids get eaten by aunt.
Well, thanks very much, David.
I apologize for that digression.
No, I like that story.
I appreciate the help.
Thank you very much.
Thanks, David.
Have a great weekend.
877-960-9960, or you can text us at 772-9-76530.
And we have a great mystery shopping report.
And, you know, I'm going to mention just for a second, there's a few things that Earl and I went over early this morning, and one of them are the surge of fake parts.
Oh, boy.
Wow.
Is it a real threat?
It is crazy out there.
And, you know, I didn't know this.
This is interesting.
Counterfeitors now use technology such as AI, artificial intelligence, and high-end.
3D
scanners
what's next
it's just
it's amazing
and the
automotive news
goes into this
I'm going to guess
it was very early this morning
when we talked about that
billion dollar industry
and these
these fake parts
they are real
and there is such
stories
I'll just share one with you
and it's about a Toyota Prius.
A Toyota Prius,
can you even imagine having a new car
and something like this happening?
A failed water pump led to a blown head gasket
in a Toyota Prius
wrecking the engine.
That is just one of many, many, many stories.
And I'm sure that Rick is well aware of this.
topic that's about a nine thousand dollar engine can you even that's why can you
even imagine so they would they would build a part and they would they would
fake the series the the part number and they would copy the shape so you know
at first and probably the box they would counterfeit the box oh it's simple
so it's something you don't think about you and who's how many how many
I don't think, I don't know what percentage of the parts that we import that we actually inspect.
Probably don't inspect for counterfeits or not.
Yeah.
So, go ahead, right.
But there's a huge, huge market out there with people selling fake, like Apple products, iPhones, the headphones.
And it's, the packaging looks so perfect.
And they're selling these.
And it's, it's garbage quality, and it's, they're counterfeits.
Can they get on?
The thing is, can they get on Amazon?
Oh, yeah, they get it on Amazon easily.
But doesn't Amazon guarantee the source that they, I think they must.
If you can prove it.
Yeah, I think they must.
The problem here is everybody knows to watch out.
If you're buying, and from eBay or something like that, everybody knows to watch out
and make sure that it's not a counterfeit headphone or counterfeit iPhone or a counterfeit Samsung
or something, but who's going to think to look for a counterfeit water pump for your car?
Nobody is thinking to look for these things, and that's where the issue is, people are not aware
that these can be out there, so they're producing a water pump for like $5,
selling it to you for $90, $150, and then it fails, and when you go looking for compensation
or warranty on it, there's nothing.
And you're screwed over because it's a counterfeit part.
So folks be very careful about where you source your parts from.
And if you're buying parts to install yourself or have someone else install in your car,
keep documentation and receipts of it, take pictures of it,
and take pictures as you're bringing it out of the box to show that you did your due diligence on it.
And let me cover this part about Amazon.
I didn't know this.
Great advice record.
I bet Donovan knew it and was probably going to call it to my attention.
But I thought, and I'm a little shocked, to be honest with you,
I'm looking at ChatGBT, GBT now, Amazon's responsibility.
When you see ships from and sold by Amazon, Amazon is the retailer, not the manufacturer.
Amazon guarantees you'll receive the item as described in the listing,
and you can return it, and they say that.
Amazon does not certify or guarantee who actually manufacture the product.
Now, that scares the hell out of me.
I didn't know that.
If you're going to buy an Apple product, go to the Apple store.
Yeah.
The problem is if you need to buy a Nippendenzo water pump, there's no Nipendenzzo store to go to.
Exactly, yeah.
So you have to watch where you're sourcing it.
So if you're going to buy one, even though it may cost a little more for you, go to a reliable
a parts store that you know
that will replace that part
and take care of you. We rave
and rave and rave about Amazon
and you know
Jeff Bezos, if you're
listening. That's
not right. You need to
when you sell a product
and you say that product is a
Lexus water
pump, you've got to verify
for the consumer that Lexus
built that water pump. I think
that's your responsibility. Or at least
put one hell of a big disclaimer saying we don't know if Lex has really made that water pump.
And Amazon, they're not doing that according to chat, GBT, and that's wrong.
Yeah.
Okay.
It's the crazy world we live in now.
That's an understatement.
Moving along here, you know, here's the kicker.
You're going to take, you're going to get your part.
You're going to order your part, okay?
And you're going to take it into the dealership.
and you want the mechanic to use that part.
Do you know that there are some dealerships that won't do it?
They just won't put their reputation on the line,
and they want to give you a full warranty,
and they can't do that if you bring your part in.
They don't know where it came from.
They don't know.
But let me jump in on that just for a minute, too.
And excuse me, I'll finish this up by saying they have to sign a waiver
when you go into the service drive you have to sign a waiver you know releasing them from any liability and that's the reason why they want you to sign a documentation
there's two reasons they do that the good reason which is what nancy just described to protect you and them from counterfeit parts but the other reason is you can buy you can buy if you're careful
real OEM part in other words you have a Lexus you can buy a Lexus part for far
less than the dealers typically will sell it to you so the dealer wants you to buy
the part from him because he charges you a lot more money so you're caught you're
caught between a rock and a hard place there's two reasons the dealer is is
saying no we won't use that part you bought there's a good reason and there's a
bad reason I like to say I like to say
what you should do
but all I can say is
it's up to you
you're going to have to
if you buy that car
by that part
you're going to have to verify
that it was made
by the
supposed manufacture of it
and that's a hell of a burden
to put on a buyer
it is
you don't want to just
replace a part
you know
you don't even want to
replace your engine
so you know
heads up
you know
do your homework
it is beneficial the other part of this story is that this it says here but that's just the tip of
the proverbial iceberg given that 24 the u.s imported more than a hundred and ninety seven
billion dollars in auto parts so this is a huge industry and things certainly can fall through
the cracks. So, as I always say, knowledge is power. Our number here is 877960-99-60, or you can text us at
772-4976530. Please take advantage of your anonymous feedback.com. We're going to go back to
Dick. I believe that he has called back. Good morning, Dick. Good morning, Nancy. Good morning.
Nice to hear you back on the radio.
We miss you.
Saturday morning.
It's very empty without you live.
Thank you.
I want to just mention to that lady that she was talking about the hybrid.
We got a Corolla hybrid, which is different than the Lexus.
But our hybrid is nothing but terrific.
It's the best thing we ever did.
So we're super happy with a hybrid.
And I hope all the other people listen to that, too.
That's a great investment.
And the gentleman that called first, did he say he was going to, did he say he drank a fifth?
I was going to take the fifth in the car.
Did he say he drank a fifth?
I think if it was Roadrunner, Steve, he probably is going to take the fifth, but I bet he's going to drink one tonight as well.
I hope he brings a good scratch like a Glenn Liver or something when he goes to the party.
I'm not given a hint, but somebody I think likes a good scotch over there in the...
Well, that was me.
You're talking Earl's language now.
McKellen is the nectar of the gods.
Yikes.
Rick, please, I have a question, if you don't mind.
I have that 2007 Lexus.
And I have a little trouble.
But it's still running rough.
So I got adventurous.
and I started looking at the mass flow sensor
I had sprayed it with mass flow sensor spray
put it back I still have the issue but I know I think
the car the revs are not going up more than 17,000
even if I were over 45 miles an hour
so I decided one day I started the car
and I disconnected the harness on the map
but the car just died
and the engine
the engine light came on
so that's where I stand
do you have any suggestions
as silly as it sounds
and this is the
computer
internet cop-out
answer
I would try disconnecting the battery
and wait a few minutes
and then reconnect it
and then take the car out
and just drive it normally for a while
and you say it's only
getting up to 1,700 RPMs?
As it's
that would say, I said 17,000.
Yeah, 1,700,
even when I go over 40,
45 miles an hour.
Wow.
Yeah, I would
check that car, take it for a
find an open road
and give it a good hard gap. That's a reboot.
And Rick, I know
you hate to sometimes say that because it sounds stupid,
But from our experience on the show, and from our experience with everything we do today, the reboot, to me, it's part of the natural way I live.
I always unplug something and plug it back in.
Even with my car, I turn my car off.
Like you say, I unplug my car and turn it back on.
And I don't know the percentage, but I'm going to guess 75% plus of the time, that fixes it.
Yeah.
Reboot everything.
But if, if try, try getting, you know, find an open road, just empty road.
And from a standing still start, just punch that gas pedal down, just good three quarters of the way or so.
And if it only gets up to 1,700 RPMs, you need to have that checked by a mechanic because something is going wrong there.
That it's, you should see it get up to at least 3,500 to 4,000.
RPMs. I should never
rev really high, but if it's staying
at low RPMs like that,
there's something going on there with your
engine. Okay.
Okay. Well,
I appreciate it very much.
Thank you.
Absolutely, sir.
Thank you.
We love your show. Thank you for calling back.
Stu is in the room
for all you, Stu fans.
That's my son, and he's here
and available.
Okay, we're going to go to
welcome stu we're going to go to jerry who's been holding he calls us from lake park good morning jerry
hey good morning um live in lake park um my wife bought a 2003 avalon which i'm still driving from
stewart toyota um she bought it new uh it had a uh water intrusion problem that that like four years old
that in the Trump, that I could, I chased it for years.
And then I, then I had another leak that flooded the front seat.
Now, this is calling about, your other caller, they called about his weather gas.
Yeah, yeah.
Seventh door.
What I discovered with that 2003 Avalon was that the seams that holds a trunk seal on,
the gaffe, the sealant they used between the spot welds had broken down.
Ah, yeah.
And then since I chased that one for several years, climbing in a trunk, everything else, water testing,
I found that the intake, the air intake for the climate control had the similar problem,
and that intake is located under the cow.
Right.
Windshield wipers.
Right.
Exact same thing.
Sealant had failed at those spot welded seams.
Right.
Yep.
3M weather strip adhesive for the trunk seal and then another 3M product for the front because it's exposed.
Solve my problem.
Yep.
Chase it for years.
Chaste it for years.
Talk about a concealed condition.
And for me, the, for me,
The finishing touch on that is several large bags or buckets of damp rid.
It's a product.
You can get it on Amazon, Home Depot, Lowe's Target, anywhere.
But dampred.
They can't buy it anymore.
Nancy has all the dampred.
Oh, she bought it all.
A sock full of rights worth.
You can order it from Nancy.
Yeah, from Nancy.
Nancy.com.
I've invested in dampred.
But yeah, dampred is designed to absorb moisture.
And it will save your car because otherwise you're going to get mold down underneath the padding, the jute, we call it, underneath the carpet.
And you're, you'll, once that mold gets in there, it's a nightmare trying to get, you're going to strip the entire interior to try to get that cleaned out.
So, yeah, damp red is the greatest stuff.
And even if you're, like if your phone goes in water, put it in a sealed container with some damp red,
problem solved. I mean, it's just, it's
the miracle cure anymore.
Yeah, I'm old school. Not rice?
You're not supposed to put it in a jar full of rice?
Nope. Yeah, in one of my old
box. You just
do a real good job. Yeah. Save
the rice for
the Chinese cooking for the good General South
chicken. And yeah, no,
no, never, never rice. Never rice,
folks. Oh, it's cheap
if you can contain it.
Yeah. All right. Yeah, that was
that was it. Anybody listen, especially the guy that
called about his door seal. That's where I started looking, and I found it that air intake.
Yeah. See, he had looked for that. What he did is he put a tarp over the top half of the car,
but left the cowling area exposed, and he said he got no water intrusion at that point. So he knew
the air intake was okay, and that's what led him to find those door seals on his.
Real good. The teams fail. All right. I'm all done. Thank you very much.
Thank you. Thank you very much. Hey, Rick,
What's your take on using a dampred bag, deodorized?
It's lavender, and I have it in one particular room.
I hang it up a day and a half.
It's filled with liquid.
Try to top that.
And then I look at...
You do live right on the ocean, so I mean, you've got that moist air coming in.
Take this in, try to digest this.
It's 80% humidity.
in the closet okay 70% in the bedroom wow you talk about bones that hurt we're talking damp so anyway but
i still use dampred earl what's your take on dampret you're living in atlantis we haven't got
enough time i knew you'd say that we'll have to discuss that on another show earl and i are not on
the same page but d'amfred do we continue to use it anyway no i live i damn
That's fine.
Dan Bread.
Yeah.
I'm kidding.
Okay.
You and I are going to discuss that later.
That's the least of our worries.
Hey, we're going to talk to Barry.
Barry's a regular caller from Tampa.
We enjoy speaking to him.
Good morning, Barry.
Good morning.
Since I became a regular listener, I wondered how to search past shows to make sure I'm not rehashing a question that perhaps you covered six months ago.
After hitting a few dead ends, I found a couple of solutions that I'd like to share.
One is a website called PhilMOT.com.
That's F-I-L-M-O-T.
It searches the subtitles across a set of YouTube videos,
and since the Erlon Car Shows are on YouTube,
and they have closed-caption subtitles, Singo.
This thing searches everything that was said,
not just the title and description,
and you can and usually should limit your search to just one channel,
such as Erlon cars.
us that again. Give us that
website again.
F-I-L-M-O-T-com.
F as in Frank.
Yeah.
Yeah. Very good. Thank you.
This will work on anything
not just real on card, but it works
great on your show. There's a couple
of caveats that you have to keep in mind.
The videos have to have subtitles
or they aren't searchable, but fortunately
most of years do.
And these subtitles are
computer generated, so there are
misheard words and other mistakes here and there.
Finding just the right term to search can be a little bit tricky.
But even with these limitations, telmont.com works quite well.
It takes you right to the point in the video where the search term was said, too.
So that's really handy.
That's good.
I'm glad you told us, huh?
Yeah.
And then another place to search is the website called Podscript.com.
And this one works on the transcripts of the podcast versions of the show.
So which one's better?
I'd say that Sommat has a better search capability,
but not all your shows are on YouTube,
or if they are sometimes the transcripts are missing.
The set of shows is more complete
on the more basic PodScript.C.O. side.
Barry, give us that second one again,
so all the listeners can get it down.
Okay, that one's called Podscripts with an S, podScripts.com, just got C.O.
Spell it.
Spell it on the ear.
Okay.
P-O-D, F-R-I-T-S-D-C-O.
Oh, very good.
Yeah.
Thanks very much.
Sure.
So I would say, you know, the secret to making these websites work, because they didn't at first,
was to contact the owners and ask that they include your show in the search results.
And so both of them did, and hopefully it'll stick.
It has for several weeks so far.
Oh, that's excellent news.
Today, if anybody tries, they can get information that they need on practically anything.
I feel sorry for those of us, and, you know, I'm almost there because, in my age,
but a lot of people don't, we had one of our best callers.
He's got a great sense of humor, so I won't hurt his feelings,
but we call him the Roadrunner, Steve, from South Florida.
I think he calls himself the Roadrunner.
And he says, if I don't want to buy it on Amazon, a lot of people, I'm not saying everybody should buy everything on Amazon, but I'm just saying that the days of going into a store and touching and feeling and smelling it like we used to are pretty much behind us now.
So you need reliable online sources.
And it's, you really limit yourself.
And the same thing is true with getting information, online information.
If you don't have YouTube, and Barry just gave us a couple more great sources.
But with online information, if you use it, it's hard to be taken advantage of.
You've really got some great tools at your fingertips.
Okay, where are we now?
Where are we?
I put everybody to sleep.
We are in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
Hey, let me ask you a question.
I'm thinking recalls, and I'm thinking a lot of recalls.
When do you not turn on the TV and hear about recalls?
You hear about it all the time.
Here's the question for you.
How many recalls have we received for the cyber truck and the plaid?
Several.
Very much so.
You know, folks.
Are they software recalls?
Like you have to just do it?
Mainly, mainly software, yeah.
Okay.
And but some that you want.
You had to take it in.
They had to think of that, yeah.
I'm not happy with Mr. Earl.
That's the name of Earl's cyber truck.
You know why?
If stuff keeps falling off my cyber truck, like the wheel covers,
and then I just found out the trim.
It's glued on.
It's glued on, I guess.
Well, let's go to something more serious.
Guess what I don't like.
I don't like Mr. Earl when he goes through the stop signs.
I'm getting confused.
He has to get time out because my life is on the line.
He was just copying me.
The real earl sometimes go through stop signs.
What was the?
I was getting confused.
The real earl.
My cyber truck is named Mr. Earle.
And autonomous, Mr. Earl, will go through.
It's a little embarrassing because I'll tell you exactly what we're talking about.
Our cyber truck is fully autonomous, full automatic driving, autonomous.
And when we go home, we live in Jupiter.
colony, and we have a police force, and you can only get in one way and get out of the same
way, and the police department is right there, and it's a three-way stop, and you have complete
vision of where you are. If there's no cars coming, and you're sitting there at the stop
side, and there's no car on the left, and there's no car on the right, and you can see for a long
distance, there's no reason to stop, except for the fact that the police station is right there.
So I have exercised my bravery, bravado, from time to time.
When I am driving, and the cops leave me alone.
I have to talk to them about that.
But the autonomous also does the same thing.
So autonomous drivings and Teslas will emulate a safe driver.
They don't necessarily obey the law.
And that's what they're after Tesla about.
Tesla doesn't necessarily obey the law.
We were late, almost late, for the radio show this morning.
And it has some bad weather, blah, blah, blah.
So I put my cyber truck, Autonomous, on Hurry.
And we got here actually right on time.
What does the literature say, Hurry does?
Hurry will exceed the speed limit.
So right away, they admit, Autonomous admits they'll break the law.
We were doing 80 on I-95.
Hence, I had to change my clothes before I came in to the studio.
But there were no cars around?
I was wearing my Starbucks.
Wait, is there no limit to how fast it will, how much you don't see?
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Can you set that parameter?
They don't set it.
It's only, Elon Musk knows what that is, but I don't know.
To your point, my plat has never gone through a stop sign.
She's done a lot of other violations.
a lot. But that's what keeps
me, models. Keeps
my attention. And
if I'm on
autonomous, I am ready
to jump on that break
because I just don't trust my
autonomous, but she does a really good job.
Does your car have a hurry button?
A who? A hurry button like the
truck. Yeah, I can change my
way of driving.
But my point here is about
pardon me, Rick, my point
here is about recall
and how everyone nonchalantly just throws these recalls
because they think it's junk mail in the garbage
or that they just don't,
they have this fear of going into the dealership
and being upsold for something else.
You know, there's so many things that can,
it can be a very costly...
Can nobody wants to go into a car dealer?
Can I jump in on this?
What you're describing is exactly what dealerships,
as you will know, pray upon.
recall campaigns, they try and turn it into an opportunity.
So if there's a big recall, it's a big deal for a service department
because they get paid by the factory.
And so they see now they get a list of thousands of people free.
They don't have to buy the list.
And it's all real customers with their car.
And then they can market to these people.
Because you can't market and solicit warranty work,
but you can market and solicit recall work.
That's right.
And then you can, once they're in.
Oh, we just found this was loose.
We've got to fix them.
Who's loose?
I'm saying they fight you.
Oh, you're acting out
from all of the advisor.
Yeah, that's exactly what happens.
Rick has been trying to say something.
If we don't ask Rick, I'm going to happen.
Hey, Marty, hold on.
We'll be right with you.
Rick?
Two quick points.
First one is Earl.
The stop sign that you're referring to,
I'm actually looking at it right here on Google Earth,
is what appears to be either a plastic
or wooden stop sign that is painting
red and white like normal.
Normal.
But it's not like an official
highway
reflective stop sign.
So it is, I'm just playing
devil's advocate here.
It's possible
that your cyber truck
may not recognize that
as an official stop sign.
It does stop sometimes.
You know, Rick, I was asking
Earl about that. aesthetically,
that sign just doesn't look like
the same type of sign that I see
out on a public boat.
I was just playing devil's advocate on that one.
And my other point, and this is for all the listeners,
and I want you to tell all your friends and family about this,
get your insurance card or the VIN, the number on your car
that has your VIN, the vehicle identification number,
and go to the website, is my car recalled.com,
and put in that VIN number and see if there are any open safety recalls on your car,
And when you go to the dealership, if you don't want to know anything else, you tell them just the recall, they will happily do that recall because they get paid for it.
And the parts department makes money on the parts, the service department makes money, and everybody gets paid.
But get it done, folks, because if it's a safety recall, you could be putting your lives.
I got a better idea.
Or someone else's life in danger by not getting it done.
Don't take your car by yourself to the deal.
You have a friend do it and say they're not authorized to authorize any repairs.
That's fine, too.
Who's got a friend that good?
I don't know.
And, you know, there's something else that's real important.
You know, don't let the fact that the dealership can't take you in and can't make an appointment for you in the service drive.
Because here's a fact.
You know, everybody is looking to make money.
And these mechanics are not making any money on a recall.
They're paid for, okay?
So the dealerships are limiting the number of recalls that they can handle
because they have to pass work over to the mechanic that the job would be more lucrative for them
because they're not being paid.
So they're not going to be working all day.
They get paid, but not much.
You know, they get paid.
They get paid.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
They get paid for the recalls.
Yes.
McActus, yes.
We get paid for the work, we did.
They pay the dealership.
I got to check with Consumer Report.
Okay, I've got to get to Marty.
He's patiently been waiting, and we love hearing from him.
Marty, good morning.
Hi, how you doing?
Good.
I have a question for Rick.
On my crown, I've had it for a year and a half, a little over a year and a half.
supposedly the MPG is supposed to be 40 to 41.
In the year and a half, I've gotten 40 three times.
I usually get 35, 34, 36.
Yep.
But the car runs fine.
Should I do anything or just leave it alone?
You have a heavy foot, Marty.
That could be.
Here's the real part of the world.
When they come up with those numbers,
that they put on the sticker on the window,
the Monroney sticker,
that mileage that they say,
they say that's the real mileage.
Yeah, what they do is they're actually on a test track.
They're on a big oval test track.
It looks like the racetrack you see at NASCAR,
and they're driving under perfect real-world conditions,
like it's a sunny, cool day with great temperatures,
low humidity
and they simply drive a certain amount of time
to see what the mileage will be
and they have a specific set thing that they follow
and in the real world
out where we are with mosquitoes
and humidity and rain
and crazy drivers from New York and New Jersey
now I know I just defended everybody
but oh well hey sorry
and the nutcase drivers here in South Florida
the potholes the roads
yeah this is the real world
you're never going to get that same fuel economy.
My best advice is, if you really want to do some interesting things,
go on YouTube and look up some videos on what's called hyper-miling.
And these are guys that have studied ways to maximize fuel economy,
and I have seen people on there that have literally proven
that they can take the average car,
They can exceed them.
And almost double what its normal miles per gallon would be.
They can do it double simply because they use this exaggerated way of driving the car.
And also, yeah, Marty, this is, okay, I've noticed this before.
In your crown, you definitely have the laser adaptive cruise control, right?
Yeah.
Right.
Okay, so when you use that.
I can put it on eco.
Okay, that's fine.
Put it on eco.
and if you use that adaptive, it's basically self-driving
and use it like around, you're down in Boynton, where you're at?
No, West Palm.
West Palm, okay, so wherever, you just go down Okechobee Boulevard or whatever,
and then it's going to drive and it's going to keep it at a speed.
And then when the car has come to a stop, your car will stop behind it.
And then when the light turns green, you just hit Resume, okay?
Your car is going to accelerate at what Toyota thinks it should accelerate it at.
You're going to think, this ain't nothing like a, like a,
you're going to think that it's crawling and people are going to honk at you, but you're going to
efficiently get up to speed and use the gas the way it should. And that's what you would have to
drive like to be able to see those miles. And we beat this to death, but if you read on the
Maroni label where the EPA gives you your mileage, it says your mileage will vary depending
on how you drive and maintain your vehicle, driving conditions, and other factors. So that's
their fine print that gets him off the hook. But to be fair, Rick, for example, could take any
car with the EPA driving, and he could get better mileage. So the EPA is a laboratory
generated number, and it is not realistic, but that doesn't mean it's only unrealistic in one
direction, is unrealistic in both. You've heard him say hyper-miling. It's amazing the mileage
that people that are nutty about this can get on a car much better than EPA.
It takes some techniques, and you basically relearn how to drive a car, but it can be done.
Okay. Well, let's put it this way. The car runs beautiful.
So to me, to get four or five miles per gallon is not worth, you know, screwing around with us.
I would just relax, ignore that, and just enjoy driving a really nice.
nice car and just how comfortable they feel and how great it drives and just enjoy the car.
Yeah, focus on the view out of the windshield.
Yeah.
Yeah, I usually look forward.
The only thing that I don't like about the car is that inside camera that's looking at you
that'll tell you to sit up or your eyes are closed.
Do you guys know what this is?
It's an attention detector.
So if you're driving, you glance over at the person who's in the past,
see, it scolds you.
I bet you, I know Tesla probably does something like that.
Oh, yeah.
But it bong, it bong, boom, and you got to, like, you got to stop looking at, whatever you're
looking at.
I think it's, wow.
I think it does help safety.
It really does.
My brother, Josh, came up with a great idea for Toyota.
So I hope somebody, somebody at SET could do this or pass it up to TMNA.
Using that attention meter, he said, picture this.
There is a husband driving the car, and his wife is in the passenger seat.
and there's an attractive woman
they're going slowly down the road
and every single time he looks at the woman
walking down the street
the car bongs at him and the wife
glares at him
I think it's a great idea
see I got it the other way
my wife will point out the good looking girls to me
oh she's a very nice one I love my wife
I have another quick question for Rick
if you got the time
sure yes I got a service
campaign notice
the number on it is
25T D
and it says rear traction motor cable corrosion but it says it's that's on certain models
because I got the notice does that mean my Toyota's in there or do I have to bring it in
and have them checked the VIN you could call the VIN yeah you can call in call the dealership
and ask them if you need to do anything with this but also read the paperwork closely on it
because some of these now are, it's a safety campaign,
which means this is something that you need to have done
at your soon as convenience.
Some of them are what's called a warranty enhancement
where it's not really a campaign that says
you need to have this repaired
because there's a problem that may occur with it.
That number sounded like a warranty enhancement.
Yeah, it may be, that's what I'm thinking.
I think that one is what's known as an enhancement
where it says,
Okay, normally the warranty on this component for this shielding portion, the cable corrosion, is, say, 60,000 miles, but we're actually going to extend it to 120,000 miles, and the only thing you need to do is take that notification letter and put it with the owner's manual in your glove box so that you have it for reference, in case this problem occurs later in the life of the car.
Okay, I only saw this online when I hit the Toyota app.
So I haven't got a letter in the mail yet.
All right.
Well, even so, I don't think they even are going to send letters anymore
because all this stuff is available online.
But you can call the dealership, and they'll run your VIN
and find out if there's anything that you need to take care of right now.
And if it's, like I say, just an extended warranty,
they'll let you know that, and you're all set and ready to go.
Okay. Now, that was called a service campaign, I guess.
I also got safety recall, which is a 25-T-A-0-8,
and it's something about the display screen, that it can go black.
Yeah.
Well, let me put it this way.
I've had the car for a year and a half, and it's never gone black yet.
That's good.
So I don't know if it's another one.
I would ask them that one as well,
but I think that one is one where they're going to recommend that you come in
to have the part replaced.
That way it gets done before you have that issue
and you don't have to worry about suddenly being stuck somewhere.
Okay.
I think I'm going to do it.
Probably I'm going to wait a couple months only because
I have to do my service for the two years.
Yeah.
Oh, that's perfect.
Yeah, we're not talking about.
Takata Airbags here.
We're just talking about your screen.
Yeah.
Okay.
Yeah.
No, that's perfect.
All right.
So I'm going to wait until the two years are up and probably do it in December.
Excellent.
Yeah.
Okay.
I just didn't want to run over there and have them, because this place where I unfortunately got the car, they like to add other things to the bill.
Yep.
Just so you know, you can take it to any Toyota dealership in the world.
Well, in North America.
In U.S.
The United States.
Well, don't take it to Mexico.
No, no.
I mean, you might have a hard time getting back.
Like I say, the car itself is a very nice car.
Marty, it's always a pleasure talking to.
And I can understand why you love your crown.
I drove one for a while.
It's a nice vehicle.
Glad you're back.
The only thing I have heard, Tesla got a lot of bad notices.
I don't know if you've had the problem.
but they say Tesla has not paid attention to railroad tracks and a lot of news on that end
that's true we've had the problem do you do you like wait for the trains or do you try to beat them
yeah I was so afraid of train tracks it never bothered me because I even if they even if I thought
Tesla was going to be careful the idea of being run over by train but I beg you father we did
have one or two cases where it missed the real the train tracks
Please turn it off when you approach the trail.
Please, please.
Thank you so much, Marty.
All right.
Have a good weekend, and glad you're back.
Thank you so much.
Look forward to hearing from you again.
We're going to go to Bob, who's been holding.
He calls us from Lake Park.
Good morning.
Welcome back, everybody.
Oh, thank you.
Congratulations on your 50th.
Thank you.
I was wondering, is it B-Y-O-B?
No, of course not.
It's bring your own Bob, though.
You've got to bring yourself.
I wanted to ask you about this manipulation by Ford and General Motors on buying the EVs from the dealer's inventory and incorporating the $7,500 tax credit into the lease.
Yes.
I understand General Motors now has pulled back because they've got some political pressure put on them.
I'll be honest with you, but I didn't hear about that.
I do know that that's how it's been handled even with Toyota on the leases.
So, yeah, basically the cap cost, the sale price is bought down with the $7,500 credit,
and that goes to the lessor.
And down here, it's Southeast Toyota Finance, but around the country, it's, you know, the various leasing companies.
I didn't realize it was becoming a problem.
It might become a problem for us.
Well, it was just this political pressure that put on general motive, so they backtracked.
But I also saw that Ford now was offering a special financing program,
for subprime lenders for the F-150.
And I was wondering, do they sell those loans off after they do the deal?
I don't know.
Do you know that?
Like in the case, like mortgages, so they contracted these loans, do the, does GM or GMAC or whatever?
I think they can.
I don't know that they do.
Yeah, we don't know.
What about Toyota?
Do they ever sell off those?
Probably not. Toyo's got all the money.
One of the reasons I don't think so is that because they use loans and leases as part of that cycle.
And I don't think they want to keep you in that cycle and market to you.
So when you lease a car through Southeast Toyota Finance, that might not be a good example.
You buy a car through Sauter.
When you sell off a loan, you have to basically discount it to the buyer.
Otherwise, there'd be no sense.
And so, like I say, the people.
and sell the loans off are typical the ones
that are not cash rich
like Toyota. Yeah, exactly.
And also, they do
want to work it in, so they want to
keep in touch with you. You'll continue to get marketing
from them, encouraging
to return to the dealership and all that.
So it's all part of the internal ecosystem.
I saw your friend
this lawyer that's
in South Florida on another
YouTube channel. Josh, his name is?
Josh, yeah.
Sue your car dealer.
I think we've had
call in the show. Oh yeah, he's a very
interesting guy. He was on another program
and it was very interesting because they would... Is it Justin
or Josh? Is it Justin?
Because I think, I know definitely we had a Justin
lawyer who was a friend of course. They might have been
a young guy. A young
young attorney from South Florida that
has a website. Yeah, he's in New York
and I'll have to check
that. I haven't seen his website. But Justin
Lynn, right?
I think, yeah. Justin Lynn?
It was very interesting. He was discussing
the car dealership that will
take your trade in and you
still owe money on it
and they'll incorporate that into the new
car sale and then they don't pay off
your old loan and then
you're still responsible for making your
car payments. Now you're making car
payments on two vehicles and
the dealership, if they go out of business
the interesting thing here is they're not
held liable. It's the lender.
Whoever did the financing
has the liability.
I'd like to find out for sure if that is.
Justin Lane. I've been trying to get him to help us with a lot of people that have problems
with car dealers. The problem we've had on this show is when I say to somebody, you should
hire a lawyer. They say, I tried. And the lawyers down here, they only want a case that's
a slam dunk. And if you call up and you have an obvious case that they can make a ton of money
on, they take it. But if it's a case they have to work a little bit, and there's a danger that they
not make a ton of money, they turn you down.
So there's a, I hate to say this,
that there's a shortage of lawyers anywhere
because I think we got too many damn lawyers,
but we don't have too many damn lawyers
that will take cases that are justifiable
for people of limited funds.
If you haven't got a lot of money,
it's hard to find a lawyer.
Right. Well, I thought it was very interesting,
and I didn't realize he had his own website.
Yeah, I'm going to check it out.
Justin Lynn.
Yeah, I'll do that.
I was just wondering.
about that.
Bob, was that a recent post
or information that you came across?
Yeah, he was on another YouTube channel
where father and son that they
have a YouTube channel on the car industry.
Yeah, you're talking, I think Bob's talking about
our competition and, you know, we go back and forth
and we were supposed to be on there.
Well, definitely.
Hey, Bob, here's an interesting story
about Justin Lynn.
if it is, in fact, the Justin Lynn that we know.
Many years ago, Justin Lynn was our electrician.
He lived here in Florida.
Can you believe that?
And now here he is so successful, and not only him, but his wife, and they live in New York.
Right.
Interesting.
Yeah.
Well, I did, he did say he covers three different states, but he does so I, I, I, I,
I think he was at, when they had him on the podcast, he was in South Florida because they had heavy, he kept complaining about the rain, the heavy rain.
And he was down, I think he was down in Broward, maybe down in Broward County.
And he was complaining about that.
He was just on a day yesterday.
I found him here.
He's, uh, his website is Lynn, Justin Lynn, the two ends, L-I-N-N-Justin-L-L-N-L-L-L-N-Law.com.
Yeah, I've got it.
Yeah, well, he had, he was promoting a different, uh, two-year card.
dealership.com.
Hmm.
What I saw.
Yeah.
Hey, Bob, real quick, before we jump off,
I'm on those,
on the Ford and GM
dropping the $7,500
credit thing.
Yeah, I just looked,
I looked it up.
There was one,
okay, there was a Republican senator
from Ohio named Bernie Morano,
and he's a car dealer.
Oh, he's a former car dealer.
And so when he heard about this,
he thought it sounded a little hinky to him.
So he started,
he called GM,
or he might have called Ford
anyway they did not reveal
what the reason for the decision was but was
after that he suggested political
pressure they opted
to drop it following GM
GM did it first
I just thought it was an
interesting concept the way they came
they came up with that real quick
because the EV sales went up
like crazy before the credit
expired and then they were
trying to help I guess they were trying to
help the deal with that because otherwise
the inventory is going to be stuck on their lot, you know?
Yeah, but when talking about buying them,
that's what happens when a customer leases a car,
the financing arm of the manufacturer
buys the car from the dealer.
They hold the title, and they're basically rent the car.
So that's how the operation, when they say,
you know, thanks very much.
Justin, I'm going to put this up,
lynnlaw.com, Justin.
Justin, Lynnlaw.
com.
J-U-S-T-I.
N-L-I-N-N-N-L-N-L-N-L-N-L-N-L-N-L-N-L-L-N-L-L-L-N-L-L-L-L-A-L-L-N-L-L-R-L-A-L-L-L-A-R-R-K-
We're going to roll right into the mystery shopping report.
That mystery shopping report is from Universal Hyundai in Orlando.
and Agent Lightning went out to this dealership, and, well, Earl, we'll give you the rest of the story.
I miss your buddy.
Where's ChatGBT.
Well, I actually used ChatGBT.
On my phone to grade this shot of report.
So the problem with the on camera on Mike, ChatGBT, BT, we were having a problem with him.
getting restless and after a half an hour and nobody talks to him he has to jump on the microphone
last week at the end of the show i heard somebody talking and i thought we had forgotten the caller
on the line yeah yeah so we're trying to control yeah i think he's like timmy you know we don't talk to
timmy and he really takes an attitude and uh he lets us know timmy our robot our home robot
he should explain this they have a robot that brings coffee around
around the house.
Not in my house.
Anyway, he causes a lot of havoc.
Wait, he broke a glass when I was there, right?
Okay, mystery shop, right?
Okay, and the mystery shop is from Universal Hyundai in Orlando.
And please, ladies and gentlemen, we'd love hearing from you.
We'd like you to vote on the mystery shopping report.
You can do that at 772-497653.
That's 772-497-6-5-30.
Now back to the recovering car dealer.
Okay, I'm speaking as if I were Agent Lightning, or Crack Undercover Agent.
I arrived in the early afternoon and was greeted by the front desk person who offered me a friendly good afternoon, welcome me in.
Have you already been in contact with anyone in the dealership, she asked?
and that's the up system by the way
the salespeople try to take turns
so one salesperson doesn't talk to all the customers
and earn all the commission so they always try to rotate it
to the next salesperson so I said no
I just haven't been here before
she then turned to a salesman named Fabio
who was waiting nearby and introduced us
a long flowing blonde hair
Oh, yeah. Fabio.
I think you got the wrong guy.
Fabio? Isn't he the guy that buttons?
Oh, yeah. I'm saying you have the...
Oh, I remember.
I hate to interrupt when I'm trying to read the mystery shopping room.
Oh, I'm sorry.
Fabio had me follow him to a desk on the showroom floor and asked, what brings you in today?
He also asked for my driver's license.
I said, I'm coming in ahead of time to see if my son will be able to look.
forward a brand new car. He was in an accident a few months back and his settlement check
should arrive any day now. He finally, he really needs a reliable car and one that doesn't
come with a big price tag. Fabio said in that case, I suggest either the Hyundai venue or the
sonata. He copied my license and then asked me to follow him outside. They had a gas combustion engine
venue up front, but I said, I don't think he'll like that. I'm more interested in seeing the
hybrid, the venue hybrid. He replied, well, we may need to take the venue to the back lot
if you don't like what we have up here. Okay, kind of like you. Why put me to all this
trouble kind of a thing. I just said he spotted near my hybrid venue and we went over. It was a new
2025 Hyundai
menu hybrid
SEL Sport
with an MSRP
of 29,185.
That's a pretty low MSRP.
It also had
an addendum.
We call it the infamous addendum.
They all got addendums,
especially in Florida.
That added $599
nano-coding.
Sorry.
$499 for fabric leather protection, $199 for custom pinstripes,
and $99 for wheel locks, that's grand total $1,396 bucks.
$1.99 for pinstripes, geez.
$1.99 for pinstripes?
Oh, they're custom.
If it said stew on the side, I'd pay $1.99 for that.
$100 for wheel locks?
Willocks. They're like $16 in a plastic pack or something.
Exactly. And it takes five minutes to put them on the car.
Yeah. You can do it yourself.
And that isn't even the point. The point is not the older price it, but they don't give you a choice.
They put it on the car and it's there. So it's illegal, by the way.
I pulled their website up, a website listing for the venue, same one.
It had an MSRP of $29,185 and a buy.
as low as $26,000 and $6.
Well, the difference is all the added stuff, right?
And that's illegal.
You know, you've got to sell the car, according to Federal Trade Commission,
in this case, Florida law, you've got to sell it for the advertised price.
But they don't do it, and they don't care, and nobody gets taken to court.
Senator Ashley Moody, are you listening?
Yeah, yeah.
Really?
She'll be president pretty soon, yeah.
Oh, God.
So, she moved quickly.
She moved from, you know.
Yeah.
So.
She moved quickly from ignoring our calls to going to D.C.
So the salesman relied on all the vehicles come with this.
It includes Scotts Guard, ceramic coat protection.
There's no getting around that.
Want to bet?
That was me.
I made a face and said, okay, well, I'll have to see what my final price will be and then decide.
Fabio led me inside.
I sat down on his desk.
He excused himself to talk to his sales manager to get me a price.
A few minutes later, Fabio returned with a sheet of paper,
which he placed face down on the desk.
Now, that's just stupid.
I mean, it's just...
It's so dramatic.
It's rude.
You're right.
It's like from a scene of the movie.
Here's my office.
So anyway, that's old school.
I like that.
better, just old-fashioned
crap. He
said, I need you to
understand what numbers are on this
sheet before I show it to you.
That can't be good.
If he was proud of the numbers, he would have just
tossed it to her.
Like if she looked at it, she just
goes screaming out the door, which
maybe she would. We need to strap you into your
seat before I show you this.
So with your sons,
with your sons mid to high
a 600 credit score, he's
going to qualify for very good rates you'll have to put money down to get the
vehicle there's no way around the high interest rates you can't get around much
here I looked at him and said I begged to differ we just went through this
with my younger son who had no credit and we were able to get him a very good
rate by putting a few thousand dollars down on the vehicle Fabio said your
other option ignoring basically your other option would be to forego that
discounted rate of $2,000 and just take $1,000 off, then go with a Hyundai special interest rate,
which would probably be around 6.99% for its current rate.
Now, the average rate today, I check with ChatGBT, BT, the average rate on finance can
new car today is 7.2.
So if you're telling me Hyundai's special rate is 6.99, I'm not too excited, but I don't believe
that's Hyundai's rate.
Well, it might be for his tier.
You know, he could have.
It could be.
We don't know.
But, yeah.
I reached over, took the sheet of paper, unhappy with the way he was speaking to me.
Turned it over and took a picture of it.
You go, girl.
We'll take a look now.
Ancient Lightning, yeah.
Years ago, I digress.
Years ago, we had a mail shopper.
He was actually our service manager at the dealership.
And he went in.
He was very aggressive like Asian Lightning.
but he was also bigger.
And you wouldn't want to stand up, I guess, a guy.
He looked like Fred Flintstone.
So he went into, I'll say it out loud, Palm Beach Toyota.
He went in there, and they wouldn't give him a copy of the buyer's order.
So he snatched the buyer's order off the sales manager's desk and ran to the car.
And Rick is laughing because he knows Scott, or God rest his whole.
Crazy God.
Scott passed away.
But jumped to the car.
and it's screaming back and gave us the shopping report.
So Agent Lightning is putting her life at risk
when she grabs these papers and takes pictures of them.
Where are we here?
She took a picture of it.
Yeah, I took a picture of it.
So, the top line label of market value selling price.
The top line, oh yeah, where they're in.
The top line label, the market selling price was of the lot priced.
30,0581, they discounted at 2,075 and took off a $2,500 rebate.
Just the price was $26,06, just like the ad, but then they added $1980 in fees.
And that said, no, no, you can't do that.
The fees were not itemized, so it was impossible.
At first glance to tell what it was junk, however, using a rule of thumb, just due to the calculation,
I subtracted the typical amount of tag title fees in Florida,
so about $450 of the other was actually junk.
So double, what do you call it, double trouble.
They made up a bunch of stuff,
and then they inflated what they said was legitimate stuff.
I mean, it's just really bad.
I estimated about $15.00 junk fees,
so my real price was about $27.5.
I'll have to get back to you, I said, standing up to leave.
Salesman became nervous, said, oh, I can't have you leave yet.
I'm not allowed.
I'm not allowed to handle customers this way.
Officer, am I being detained?
He's begging.
He's begging now.
He's begging.
Please, give me a minute to have my sales manager come and talk to you.
Just send my phone rang, uh-huh, uh-huh, uh, agent lighting.
So I started walking toward the door.
His sales manager, Alexis, I came, called out, is something wrong?
I don't answer questions.
I said, I wasn't real happy with the way Fabio was speaking to me and treating me.
I felt like he didn't trust that I knew how to buy a car on my own.
He apologized for Fabio and said, I'm by no means trying to make excuses,
and then he made an excuse, which included inappropriate.
and I'm revelations about the co-worker and I wasn't supposed to mention that on the air
and I won't mention the specifics I thanked him for sharing that with me I asked what
can I do to earn your business I said well I wasn't happy with the addendum that was on the
car he said let me get you a business card before you leave he returned a few minutes
later still on the phone with another customer which I felt was disrespectful
that's an understatement given the given that I
I was in a hurry and already on Abby.
When he finished the call, he tried to get me back inside,
but I told him I needed to go.
I was out of time and patience for the day.
He asked if I could get you to $4.99 monthly payment,
no matter what I have to do to make it happen
with his credit score being in the mid-line 600s,
was you consider it?
He's begging now, folks.
He's begging.
He ran some numbers on his phone.
I'll let me take a picture of them
and said, just call me and I'll
make it happen. 499
monthly payment. No money done.
No matter what. I said, backing
away. It's like
the guy lost control, right? I'd be
running away. I added the backing
back. Oh, okay.
I imagine the scenarios
from her notes and I just picture her going
so there you have it.
We want your vote. We have
chat, GBT's vote, but I
tell you what it is, but I gave him the same report that you just heard, and he, he judged
that we try to stay away from Fs and A's. We don't prohibit a failing grade, and we don't
prohibit an A grade, but we try to grade on the curve. And if you grave too many Fs and too many A's,
it doesn't give people the judgment where to buy the car. So whoever wants to start now?
Kick it off.
And I got to say, you have to consider where this is.
It's Orlando.
Orlando, Florida.
And that's one of those metro markets is, we say down here, Solomon Gamora, it's
kind of like, I don't know what a less horrible version of, but it's about the same in the Orlando market.
So they're going to get a C from me, even though my heart said give them something worse,
but you go to any dealership in Orlando,
I promise you it's going to be similar to this.
If not worse, they only had $1,500 in junk fees.
I mean, that's small for Orlando or South Florida.
Is that right?
Yeah, I'm not trying to do them any favors.
I'm just saying that you don't have a whole lot of choices in Orlando.
You know, if we get somebody who does a little bit better,
they're going to get a beat for me, probably.
All right, Rick.
Well, I've got Bob from Maryland says it's an F.
This was as unreal as a ride at Universal Studios.
Agent Lightning should have said the price was too high,
and then she was leaving to shop on Amazon.
We got Tom Steckle says, D-minus.
Too many pricing games, addendums, and junk fees.
Compare Central Florida Hyundai.
They have no dealer fees and no addendums.
There you go.
Johnny Z. Freidly says,
I'll give a universal score of D-minus.
Joseph Kelleher, D-minus.
All those high junk fees, reason for grade.
Hard to believe some dealers are using addendum stickers.
Brian said Latko, first mistake was going into a Hyundai dealership, D.
Tim Gilliland, sounds like a typical dealer for that part of the world, D-minus.
Myself, I'm going to follow right along with their thoughts.
I didn't like Fabio.
I didn't like the way he was presenting himself.
I didn't like the way he was acting just common courtesy.
Be polite to people.
So they're getting a D-minus for me.
That's pretty good.
That's pretty rough from Rick.
Okay, Earl.
Rough Rick.
Ah is not an answer.
I know the reason I'm going to give them an F.
I never give them an F.
Why?
Well, I'll tell you a known.
Oh, all right.
What about you, Nancy?
Guess.
Hey, first I want to say.
But I want to tell Stu, because I don't give Fs.
Because Chet, GBT, gave him an F too.
Yeah, yeah.
All right.
I believe you.
And so, I mean, chat rarely gives anything.
We were worried about Chad because he kept giving good grades, but this was so bad.
Wait a second.
Does it understand the whole curve thing?
Yeah, I mean, yeah.
All right.
When you stop and think about it, even for a Florida dealer, it was pretty rotten.
I mean, they lied, they cheated, and they stole.
I mean...
Where have we seen that before?
So, boy...
That's the official.
Well, Nancy has to...
Okay.
Folks, let me mention that Fabio, well, he should have taken some time out before talking to Agent Lightning.
And the reason I say that, because...
Fabio obviously fell and hit his head on a blunt object.
So that's no excuse, but I think that I just might email him
why ignoring women is a financial mistake for car dealers.
My grade for this person, I'll be gentle, is an F.
Yeah.
for you new listeners, we hardly ever give Fs.
And so if this dealership is listening or anyone that knows this dealership,
I mean, that's really the kiss of death.
You get an F, and we don't like to give F.
So you've got a real bad dealership there,
or you've got some bad people that are talking to their customers.
Now, I will say Tom Steckle, he's apparently in that area.
area. He says Central Florida Hyundai has no dealer fees and no addendums.
Really?
So that's coming right from one of our listeners.
That's where you go.
He's been a customer there. Apparently he's got some good recommendation on it.
So if you're in that area, you're looking for a Hyundai, check out Central Florida Hyundai.
Obviously, do your due diligence, but they got a good recommendation from Tom Steckle.
That's great.
And I'm not saying that there's just, you know, no other.
options there are there's a few and I just can't go for the old excuse oh it's
Orlando oh it's a South in Florida here is there's this is a huge
investment and people are out buying vehicles not a whole lot and also purchasing
a home a huge investment okay that's all I'll say about Universal Hyundai and
if you want my advice on it you're gonna go into shop for a car
Florida now has the open carry law, so walk in there with a big old Nerf gun,
strapped on your shoulder, a couple of them, and let them know you mean business.
And one of those are super-soakers, yes.
Now you're talking my language.
Okay, folks, I think I see by the clock that we have two minutes left, possibly.
Would that be an accurate statement, Iggy?
Okay, we're so happy to be back, and do we enjoy your company?
Guess what?
You make the show.
And we will be right back here next Saturday, same time, Erwin Cars at 8 a.m.
Have a blessed weekend.
And thank you again for joining us.
