Welcome to the Empty Netters podcast.
Can you believe what this has become?
There was a full 48 hours where I felt like I was like literally Superman.
Jumbo loves playing Fortnite, so he gets on the sticks.
Did TR show you the sauna cycle, or was that all year?
No, no, I invented that.
Almost a year now that I haven't taken a body check.
That's kind of nice.
So we are back.
We are horned up, and we are going deep.
Finish tonight with some chicken fingers and a few guineasas and into you guys.
That's where this pod came to life.
Ice is ready and we're back with another episode of the empty netters podcast brought to you by BetMGM.
I'm your host, Dan Powers, and before I kick it to these beautiful men, give us a like, a subscribe, Spotify, Apple, five-star review means the world to us.
Now, let's check in with Dr. Watkins in the Penguins layer. How are we doing, baby?
I'm double, double logoing right now, guys.
You got a shirt on and I respect it.
I honestly, no shit, I do. This is one of their free giveaway shirts. It's a, it's a, it's a,
Let's Go Pens.
And every time somebody sees this in the wild, they read Let's Go Penis.
Just because when you, yeah, that's just, I'm sorry to say it.
It's very easy to see that, you know, if you quickly glance at it.
I see it.
I see it.
You know what?
You know what?
The Penguins, you know the penis game?
You guys should play the Penguin game at Penguins games.
Like everyone yells Penguin louder and louder.
That actually be sick in the rink.
You know, like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
That's a challenge.
Hey, listen, but the good people in Pittsburgh listening to this episode, fucking, let's make this happen.
That's an incredible idea.
Let's make that happen.
And the Sydney Crosby interview.
I'm now kind of hung up on let's go penis.
Do we think that that's rooting for penis in general?
Like, let's go, penis.
I think it's like when you have too much whiskey and you're trying to get it on.
Yeah, okay.
Let's go penis, come on.
Could be that.
I wonder if it's also like an.
activity. Like, let's go penis as if penis is to do something. Yeah. Yeah, like we're making
penis a verb here. I would like to, Dan, you know what? I will say that I will try that with Sandra.
I will say that to Sandra. One lazy afternoon, I'll say, let's go, let's go penis.
She's going to go like this. What do you want to do today? And you want to, we could penis.
We could penis. And see what that means to her. And then we'll kind of, then we'll figure out what this is.
We'll figure out what penising is. I will be some guinea pig. Yeah, yeah.
It would be something.
All right.
Well, then anyway, over here we got Chris Powers.
His hand is broken.
He's in Maine.
He's in shambles.
As always, dude.
This is my life now.
Yeah, like that is actually accurate.
That as always is very accurate for your hand situation.
It's a disaster, but I am a ninja turtle now.
And that's cool.
I did always want to be a ninja turtle my whole life.
I feel like you're more spock now.
Well, turtles are.
Spock, Dan. This is Ninja Turtle.
Turtles are Spock. They are like the three. Do you see? Do you see now?
Can you do this with both hands, guys? Yeah, but not as good lefty.
Can you do that? Weirdly enough. Oh, yeah. That was pretty good. Yeah, I guess I can, but that was
harder. I can't switch as fast as you. Anti-dementia activities to go like this.
I don't even want to do that because I don't want to see how it goes. Yeah, okay. You start doing that. You're
not doing well, all of a sudden you go, do I have dementia? Yeah, you don't need the answers to that
question. Dribbling from the mouth. Chris, don't say that. Guys, we got an amazing episode for you
today. We're not going to waste any time. St. Louis Blues fans and hockey fans in general,
you're going to love this. Jake, neighbors interview, it's phenomenal. He is a beauty. Let's kick
it right to it. Jump on in. Have a great time. We'll see you on the other side.
All right, so we are joined here today by an Airdre alberta native, a Gretzky Cup silver medalist, a world championship gold medalist, an Edghenowitz Cup champion in the WHL for the Edmonton Oil Kings, the 26th overall pick in the 2020 NHL draft by the St. Louis Blues, and former Angus Beef delivery driver for Kiss the Cook.
Jake Neighbors, welcome to the empty netters podcast.
What a poll.
That's crazy.
Thanks for having me, guys.
Dude, who doesn't love some Alberta beef?
You know, that's the good stuff.
That's the best, man.
That's the good stuff.
The best.
Oh, yeah.
Me and Dylan Holloway always give it to the boys that we got the best beef in Alberta.
I mean, that's just a fact.
Like, there's things that different areas can claim and beef is something that Alberta has the free reign on for sure.
Yeah, absolutely.
It does.
Dude, I heard you had, you had fans waiting for the deliveries back in the day.
Yeah, like, people used to start ordering just to, like, meet me.
They just ordered like some bacon.
Yeah.
Just so that I would like drive to their house to drop it off.
So it'd be like a meat and greet slash meat delivery.
So yeah.
Yeah.
You know how, um, you know they do those videos.
It's like Sydney Crosby's deliver season tickets to some guys door and eat day tweet.
That was you like that was you dropping off a couple burger patties.
Yeah.
Granted, I wasn't like I was still in junior and like I wasn't in the NHL yet.
I was just like it was just people that knew me like family friends and stuff.
Yeah.
I mean, dude, like that.
That's how you know it was legit.
Like, that's true.
That's true beef appreciation right there.
Yeah, exactly.
Yeah, they saw the greatness.
They saw the greatness that Jake had coming and they saw the greatness in the beef.
It was perfect.
Correct.
Perfect combo, dude.
Well, it's nice.
It's nice we're talking family business right away because you had a very unique family life, dude, and upbringing, you know.
And one thing I thought was cool was the silver lining of your COVID draft was you had the entire family in the house.
Yeah.
You know, that was so sick, dude.
I know, yeah.
That was really cool.
Yeah.
But you grew up fast, bro.
I saw it.
You was like, you took your first solo flight at seven.
And, you know, with the way all the brothers, they're firing you off the basement
couch and everything.
Yeah, yeah.
But my favorite was you guys playing video games and your controller was actually unplugged.
Oh, yeah, dude.
What game was it, dude?
What was happening?
Anything.
Like, mostly NHL.
We would play a lot at NHL.
But like my one brother, Jeff, we would play so much video games against each other.
And I was just like from day one, the most competitive kid.
And if I lost, I would cry.
And it would just be like, that was with board games or like anything that we would play.
So he knew after like a couple games had beaten me up just to make me mad.
And then he'd turn my remote off.
And it'd be the computer playing them.
And he'd let the computer win.
And I think I'd won.
So it was, it was pretty funny.
But yeah, like being when you got brothers that are 12 and 14 years older than you,
it's like a bit of a different dynamic in the house.
But it was fun.
Like I learned quick.
So,
dude,
I,
this is like such a sensitive topic for me.
Yeah,
I know.
Because I,
first of all,
we are two peas in a pod here,
brother.
I,
I was like,
I,
back then,
losing video games,
losing,
you know,
ping pong games.
I used to fucking lose my mind.
But this piece of shit,
we used to be playing this game
on Sega Genesis called
Mutant League football.
And like,
Netters fans know this story.
Yeah.
But for years,
this prick.
was just, it was a one player game.
And he would be like, that's my only saving grace, dude.
There wasn't even a two player option.
I thought there was.
But when we turned the game on, there wasn't.
And I was like, oh, fuck.
And he would just be like, yeah, dude, you're good.
You're playing the, you're the wide receiver.
Just like run down field.
I'll throw it to you.
And then like years later, dude, I'm talking like five years later.
We were like in a random store, like a discount store and I found a copy of it.
And I was like, dude, Chris, remember this game?
And he was like, yeah.
And I was like, let's buy it.
It'll be sick.
And he's like, no, dude, it wasn't that fun.
because we then went home and I plugged it in
and I saw it was one player and I was like, you scumbagged.
You grifted me for years.
Dude, I just couldn't give up the sticks.
And I was like, and dude, he felt good.
I was like, Dan, you're the best fire receiver I've ever seen.
You catch everything.
It's incredible, dude.
We go to dinner.
Don't try to gaslight me 30 years later, dude.
Oh, dude.
Hey, it's a write of passage, dude.
It's older brother.
It's in our handbook.
We got to do it.
You got tossed off plenty of couches too, Dan.
It's true.
It's true.
Yeah.
But dude, for,
for hockey like were they strapping the pads on you? I feel like the younger brother always has to
play goalie and knee hockey or street hockey or something. How did that help shape your game back
then? Actually my brothers didn't start playing hockey until they were like until around when I was
born. So they didn't start till later. And actually Jeff was always the road hockey goalie,
the middle brother. He was always the one that would strap the pads on. I think that probably
started right away when they realized I was actually pretty good at hockey.
And they were like, we shouldn't make them go on goalie.
And so me and my dad and my oldest brother would snap it around and Jeff would always play goalie.
So that was the dynamic we had between the four of us.
Yeah.
Dude, the hero you needed.
It's a thankless job.
It's a thankless job, strapped for the boys.
It is.
Like, we would alternate a little bit.
But, like, I enjoyed playing goalie sometimes.
But Jeff would put in the long hours when he didn't want to.
Yeah.
We all needed Jeff, dude.
I mean, like that is such a glue guy moved by him.
I love it.
he hears that too he's going to be like you're absolutely right dan like he's proud of it he's like
everyone needs a jeff jeff's like you know what dude that is true i agree yeah yeah that's what he's
gonna say i guarantee it yeah and and jake can you tell um for some of the fans that don't know can you
tell the um going to go into macdonald's on your learner's permit story when you guys were just
we are hungry for a bite and needed to take the car out yeah yeah yeah so it was just like late
night. Me and my buddy
Ozzy were at
his mom's house
for those who don't know she is deaf.
So we were just like hungry up late one night
watching movies and we're like
let's just rip to McDonald's. Like it's across the street
and we could have walked. Like that's how close it was.
Like it was pretty ridiculous that we
ended up doing this. But I was like,
come on dude. Like let's just like take your mom's van
quick. She's sleeping and then we'll just go
grab McDonald's. We'd be back in five minutes.
So I grabbed her keys and just kind of like, I completely forced Ozzy.
I was going to say, did he object at all?
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, no, he was like, we're not doing this.
And I was like, yes, we are.
Like, come on, let's go.
So we drive to McDonald's and it's like, as soon as we pulled out of the, of his neighborhood,
there was a cop right across the street.
And I got scared and I went like away from McDonald's.
Like I had to go past them and I went right.
He followed us.
I went right again, followed us again.
And I was like, we drove by a little parking lot.
I just said to Ozzy, I was like, okay, I'm pulling.
in here and if he follows us, if he follows us, he's following us.
Like, you know, so let's find out if he's actually following us or not.
So I'd pull into the parking lot and sure shit, the lights go on and up to the window.
Can I have your license?
I was like, well, I don't really have one.
Think about that is I actually don't have one.
Yeah.
So he brought us, the cop was great.
He brought us home and just woke up Kim.
We told her what happened.
And the funniest part of the story is like my dad obviously found out,
called me that night, it like shredded me.
And I stayed the night at Ozzy, so I hadn't seen them face to face yet.
I get called up to the Oil Kings the next morning to go play like my second ever
WHL game.
So the family was just pop and they just completely forgot that I just got, did the dumbest thing ever, you know?
Yeah.
So it just kind of all got swept under the rug for me.
Like I got called up and it was all good.
Dude, you know that cop has some connection with the Oil Kings and he was like,
we got to throw this kid a bone here.
So he was going to get into trouble.
I don't know.
Like, we definitely, like, plead and we're like, we're young hockey players.
Like, please don't, like, ruin our lives, like, all that kind of stuff.
Just wanted a Big Mac.
Yeah, like, we were just, and, yeah, he was good about it.
So shout out that cop.
Yeah, let me off.
Like, he easily could have taken my license away at the time and made me wait until I was, like, 18 to get it.
And he didn't.
He just, like, gave me a good amount of tickets and no demerits and didn't really affect me.
So, wasn't it?
Jake, wasn't it because your lights were it on?
Yeah, yeah. Well, I just, I never drove a car that didn't have automatic lights.
Yeah. And she had an old, old van and I just didn't, I didn't even think to turn him on.
You're like, why is this guy fall? How does he know? And he's like, yeah, lights are off.
Exactly. We're like, it's like, how did he just pick us out like that?
Yeah. But he's like, uh, the trunk was open. The lights were off. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, yeah, that's not my brightest.
Yeah. Well, that's incredible. It happens to all of us. It does. Um, um.
Speaking about being a young hockey player, dude, I want to talk about the mental game that you've had some really amazing moments in because it's so important for people listening, fans, players and stuff.
And you've done such a great job of talking about all this stuff.
But you had mentioned that when you were around 13, you weren't loving the game as much in the moment.
And you went to see this guy, Matt Brown, who's a mental coach.
And you talked about all the goals that you had.
And then you found these motivational speech works things from Inkey Johnson that you would read before bed every night.
and you had notes taped to your bathroom mirror and we'll include those like things that you would see
every morning, every night.
And you had pregame stuff like things like staying thick and use all your senses.
All that stuff I think is so cool.
But my favorite one was something your old Mustangs coach Pat Steeley said to you about being bulletproof.
And, you know, I believe you still write BP on the top of your stick before every game and things like that that just kind of keep those little mental notes for you.
but while you were grinding,
through juniors,
and if you're okay with us,
bringing it up,
you dealt with two really significant tragedies
in your life that hit close to home
while you were young,
playing and trying to make it to the highest level.
How did all of these things that you learned,
all of these lessons and things that you still take with you today
really help you through those moments and through that time?
Yeah,
I think,
like,
I think looking back on it,
I'm very,
like,
grateful that I started kind of the mental work as young as I did.
I think it kind of goes back to just being like really competitive.
And growing up in Erdry were a really small town that played against bigger cities that were good
and just had more players to draw from.
And essentially what I'm trying to say, we always lose.
Like I bet you I won like 20 games in my first, but from the ages of like 10 to 13.
Yeah, fuck, that's crazy.
Right?
So like I just dealt with like a lot of losing.
And I was such a competitive kid that.
I never really focused on like the process of the game or my stats or any of that stuff.
Like I just wanted to win because if I didn't, I would cry and freak out.
You know, so like it was the same with the board games and the video games.
So yeah, my first year ban, I remember just like I was like I was done.
I looked at my parents.
I was like, I don't want to play anymore.
Like this is too like this is brutal.
And so they introduced me to Matt Brown who was amazing.
He actually just got hired by the Cracken to be to work with them.
I just saw that.
So, but yeah, he was great.
He just kind of like introduced me to the process of the game and thinking about different things other than winning and losing and how, you know, you yourself can contribute.
Um, whether you lose or win the game.
So, um, that really like, I don't know, kind of helped me just like not be so invested in winning and losing, I guess.
And control my emotions, obviously a lot better.
And then, yeah, like I said, I was grateful I did that kind of stuff because, yeah, when I think it was the COVID season in the summer, I lost one of my best buddies, Caleb Rimer.
But I played a couple of years with in Edmonton to a car accident and then obviously Orca this past year.
So, you know, those things are, I don't think you can prepare for them in any sense, really.
No matter how much work you do, grief is a different type of feeling and something I'm still learning to deal with.
And I, yeah, I would encourage people to do it.
I think you don't have to, you know, do the most amount of work or pay someone an insane
amount of money, but doing something simple and having notes on your glass as a young kid
and, like, having stuff like that to ground you into why you do it is really important.
And yeah, I still work with a mental coach to this day.
I hired one my first year in the NHL and been working with them ever since.
It's actually Andrew Ladd.
So it's nice.
I get a bit of consulting as well from him being a former captain and Stanley Cup champ.
And then I also get the mental coaching from him.
So I've really enjoyed working with him.
And yeah, still like I've been doing it for, you know, eight, nine years now and I'm still not good at it.
And it's like, it's crazy how, you know, as players, in the summer we skate and we train like crazy and we eat healthy.
And it's the same you got to do for your brain.
Like you have to train it and you have to take care of it.
And, you know, when I have my calls with ladder, like, it's a mental workout.
Like, I lead the call exhausted.
Like, it's so much thinking.
And, like, it's really cool.
And it's a, it's another aspect to the game that I think is really important.
100%, man.
And I think it's so great to have guys like you talking about this stuff.
Because not only is it good for young players coming up to here, I think it's huge with your teammates and other guys in the league that it's, this is a huge part of the game.
It's a huge part of life.
it's just another element that you can tackle with proper preparation and coaching and things like that.
So it's just a great thing that you're doing.
And it's something which you all do, frankly.
It's amazing.
Correct.
Yeah, no, it's really good.
And it develops you as like a leader too.
And helps you in social settings.
Like you become more comfortable just speaking to people you don't know or in public or whatever it is.
But there's so many different ways that mental work can help you not only.
in hockey, but everywhere else too.
So it's good.
Being a podcast guest.
Yeah.
Just being good at chumming it up.
Hey, Jake, I got to say, bud, you're the fucking NHL logo you drew as a child on your mirror
is pretty good.
It's not bad, right?
I was looking at those notes and I was like, damn, dude.
Chris, it's one of those things that you see that you're like, maybe you got into the
wrong career, pal.
This guy's an artist.
My mom was my, that's where I got from my mom.
She was a really good artist.
Her and my, my grandma.
on that side. So they were always very artsy people. So I guess I got a little bit from
maybe. Yeah. Hold on to that one, baby. Hold on to that one. I can't remember the last time I
drew a picture, but maybe I'll have to see if I still got it. Yeah. It's in there somewhere.
Yeah. I got to talk to ladder about it. Unlocking that. Yeah. Dude, I want to flash forward to
worlds, 2023 worlds. You're on the team with our great buddy, Tyler Foley. And there's all this
fucking chatter when that team came out that it was like this canada team sucks you know worse can
and then you eventually shove it up their ass obviously but we'll get to that in a second so
first question is just how cool is it to wear that leaf on your chest at at that level as as a young
canadian kid who won 20 games as a child you know like yeah that must have been incredible oh man it was so
cool um like and i remember just being like a different feeling doing it uh as a pro versus like world juniors
or Kalinka or anything like that.
Like World Juniors was cool.
I mean, ours got canceled,
so I really never got to experience it fully.
We had like two exhibition games and then it got canned.
But like Worlds was like it was different because you get,
they treat you like a man like you're able to go for dinners with the guys and,
you know, excuse me, like before you're,
it's all team dinner set up by hockey Canada when you're a young guy, you know.
Yeah.
So like I just like I loved being able to like meet new guys around the league.
We went to Budapest like right.
off the bat and had a couple nights there and it was like you could just tell our team like clicked
right away yeah and and we just used that like media stuff as motivation like we knew nobody thought
we were good but we're like boys we still play in the best league in the world that none of these other guys
play in like come on let's like what are we talking about here but uh yeah so we just clicked right away
and we were like a different type of hockey can uh hawk or i would say like Canada team that that
that you maybe normally typically see.
Like, we really grinded you down and like,
like hard.
You guys were gritty, dude.
You were gritty.
That was a very,
very cool team.
Like that roster selection and makeup was,
I,
weirdly,
I don't think I've ever heard it say,
said that plainly,
but you're right.
It was just very different.
And it worked.
Yeah.
Yeah,
we were a gritty team.
And we understood that like,
we weren't the teams that have gone
the last couple years.
Like,
we didn't have the top end talent
that those teams have had.
So that's not how we were going to win.
We were going to have to play like a really gritty style game.
And that's what our coach Andre Tourney preached.
And, you know, we had we had so much fun though.
Like when I look back at that team, like, it was night after night.
Everyone was out having fun, like winning games.
And it would just like steamrolled.
Dude, well, it was sick.
I mean, that was going to be my next question where it's like you didn't, I mean,
you were good through the group stage, but you know, you didn't go undefeated.
You know, you got.
Yeah.
I had a couple stinkers.
He lost a few.
A couple of stinkers Swiss.
I think Norway maybe, if I remember right, and the U.S.
right, looks like a fucking wagon on the other side.
But then you wrote, once you get to elimination, you beat the two host countries, Finland, Latvia, and then Germany clips U.S., you get the Germans in the final.
And that wasn't easy.
You go down twice.
Yeah.
You have the apple on the first time going to tie it again.
Toff gets the fourth.
So I just like, my next question is going to be some of your favorite memories from that time.
But it must have been just really cool to get it done.
Yeah.
I think like, oh.
so many good memories, man.
Like, it was, yeah, like, I remember, like, the Norway game.
I think we lost in a shootout or something.
Yeah.
And then I remember the Swiss game.
The Swiss were good that year, though.
Like, they were good.
They had Fiala, He's sure.
Like, they got good players.
And they were good that year.
Latvia was hard to play against, like, really hard to play against.
Yeah, that was incredible.
Yeah, like, I think, honestly, that was one of my favorite memories.
We watched the end of the bronze medal game before the gold medal game.
Like we were just taping our sticks, like watched overtime.
And we watched that goal.
And we're like, it was like they just played the gold medal game.
Yeah.
We're like, aren't we next playing gold?
Like, these guys are selling.
But it was awesome.
Like, it was so cool to see.
I remember Fantilli's goal.
I want to say it was semis against Latvia,
where he like put it under the guy stick twice and then scored.
And he was kind of like, he was obviously the youngest guy in our team.
And he was having like, he was on the four.
for most of the tournament and he finally like broke out that game and we're like oh this is why this
kid's like so nasty you know and so i remember that part like that was a big because that was a big goal
I think it like was the winning goal um but yeah dude so many good memories and just like anytime
I see those guys around the ranks like during the season it's always like hey champ how we do
it's always like it's like we always our group chat every year like when they go to worlds like
it gets fired up so it's awesome like I had so much fun at that
tournament and yeah it's incredible dude i just all i want you to say is a number i'm going to ask a
question i just want to you to answer with a number because because i've seen the videos and so is dad
so i don't want you to say anything other than on a scale of one to 10 how fun was that party in the
locker of like waltz yeah oh yeah that just like in the video like that is it eclipses what we
were as a team like dude i have never been more jealous of anything in my life i'm dead
Like I'm dead ass dude.
I've seen a lot of parties.
I,
if I could go back in time to one moment,
it would be to your guy's locker room after that.
Oh, man.
That video rivals like any movie I've ever seen as far as FOMO of wanting to be in a certain
place at a certain time.
Yeah, dude.
It was like,
it was so much fun.
And like,
we all said like afterwards for like,
if you would have like,
if you guys would have been in that locker room,
you would have thought we played four years together.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But we were with each other for like a month.
And but by the end of it, it was like, I thought we were playing a whole season together.
Like, that's how close we got as a team.
And I think that's why we won.
And we just had so much fun.
It's incredible.
It was unreal.
Yeah.
You've had so many great people around you with like, we're talking about Matt Brown and ladder
and all these teammates.
And in 2024, the Bruins moronically fire Jim Montgomery.
And then five days later, you get scooped up by Dougie Armstrong for the Blues.
So we, we, you know, we love.
that moment. Dougie said, if there's any opportunity to get a guy of the caliber of Jim
Montgomery, you do it. And he's a good buddy of ours. And we think he's just like such a great
leader of men, such a good dude. But he comes into that season. You guys roar into a playoff
spot, which was unbelievable. But it was a great run. And there's been a lot of cool vibes in
this team with Jim. What has it been like for you having a coach like that, getting to work with
at a young part in your career? Yeah, it's been amazing. I love Monty. We
We have a really good relationship,
talk to each other quite a bit.
And, you know, I worked with them actually.
He was assistant coach
and I played my nine games at 19.
So I had a little bit of familiarity with him
when he was coming back.
So that was really nice, you know,
because there's always a little anxiety
when you're getting a new coach
who it should be, whatever.
So it was nice knowing him.
And, yeah, our relationship's like growing.
I got to add to the leadership group last year.
So we communicate like a lot.
And he's just like such a.
up spirit guy.
Yeah.
And I think that's what he brought, uh, that first season when he came in.
He just brought a mentality of like, we can be a really good hockey team and like we can
have fun while we do it.
And like, let's have fun at the rank.
Let's embrace the work and enjoy it.
And like, he just brought that mentality.
And I think guys like just needed to hear that.
And obviously we clicked and went on a, you know, quite the little run there that got
stopped probably a little too short in game seven there.
But, um, but, um, but yeah.
And then just coming through this year, like obviously we didn't have this.
the season we wanted.
And, you know, I think all of us as players have regrets and Monty does too.
But, you know, we have that type of relationship where, you know, we've taken the summer to
really chat it over or discuss what didn't work and what we want to change.
And, yeah, we're excited for this season coming up.
We've heard from guys in the Bruins that he has a cool coaching style where there are some guys
who kind of like to be yelled at and coach really hard.
Some guys don't.
And he finds that good balance with players.
Is he still doing that with the blues?
and also what kind of guy are you?
Yeah.
You can yell at me.
I'm easy, man.
Like, I don't really, like, it's okay.
He was getting tossed off a couch, dad.
He was getting tossed up a couch at five years old.
He'd do whatever you want to me.
I mean, like, I like to think that I don't get yelled at or, like, talk to you too often.
I'm a pretty hardworking guy.
But if I am getting yelled at, I probably need it.
So I'm okay with it.
But, yeah, man, he's good with that stuff.
Like, I think as a coach, you have to have a good read on your players
and a good relationship with all.
follow them and he does like he goes around the room and you know he's messing with every guy and
chirping guys and you know watch him out so he's he's great man he has a good relationship with
everybody and i think when you have that like you're more open and receptive to feedback from your
coach if you know he's more open with you and honest with you so and he is and um i think guys
appreciate that and you know he gets guys and knows what to give them and yeah so it's fun i enjoy
working on lottie it's uh it's a real fun time at the rink i love that he's it's a
He is an absolute beauty.
You brought up the playoffs, which was kind of your first taste of playoff action, right?
In that run you guys had in all-time series.
It actually was a lot like that Bruins-Kinnucks Cup final member where this elite goalie was playing so well at home and then getting lit up on the road.
So obviously, a heartbreaking ending that I hate to make you relive.
Can you just take us through that series?
Because like, obviously you were aware in the locker room that Hellebuck was getting lit up in St. Louis.
like, were you talking about that?
Just what was the dialogue going on during that slug fest back and forth?
That was also such a crazy, like, sorry to jump in, but like, the entire hockey world was
watching that series.
There was, it was such, it was such an electric series.
It was amazing.
Yeah, man, it was like, I stayed with Morrissey and Lowry in the summers.
And like, I remember Morrissey invited me out to his skates in the summer after that series.
And he was like, I figured after you hit me 45 times in seven games.
that you probably wanted to come skate with me or something.
But no, man, we talked about that series all the time.
Like even him and Lowry who's played a lot of playoffs.
They're like, that's one of the best series we've ever been a part of.
And I just remember, like, I think what caught the hockey world's attention was like just how it started.
Like, game one was like everybody came out like old school banging around.
There wasn't a puck on the ice.
Like I remember I played me.
It was me, Shanner, and Kairu for, you know, the majority of the series.
And after the first two games, like, Schenner looked at me and he's like,
okay, we might have to, like, start playing hockey here and stuff just running around,
like idiots.
Like, we maybe want to, like, contribute a goal or something.
But, I mean, like, we knew going into the series that we struggled in Winnipeg.
Like, it was always kind of floating around us.
I'd love to know the stat on, like, games I've played in Winnipeg, how many times we've won.
It's got to be less than three.
Like, seriously.
and we play there lots, but we struggle there.
And we knew that going into the series.
And obviously, like, we lost the first two, probably should have won, game one.
Like, we were up two in the third.
And we lost.
And then game two, they played great.
And I just remember, like, we weren't really phased.
Like, we were just kind of like, we were in those games.
And granted, we were playing so good down the stretch that we felt like we could beat anybody at that point.
So, like, we just had this kind of, like, unwavering confidence going back home.
home and like after game three and four like obviously we played game five we come back for six
and like I get the whole hellabuck thing but we're like there's no way this deeps up yeah right right
you know what I mean like we just exactly two games in a row at home there's no way we like he's gonna play
good tonight boys like we got to get to him and it just for whatever reason like we just bared down
when we were at home and and scored on opportunities that we didn't score on in Winnipeg and
I think at the end of the day that it ended up being the series like we just we blew two
leads in Winnipeg go that we should have had like game one and game seven yep I think both up three
one so you know you can always look back on it and say what if but like we were right there man
it would have been interesting to see like we would have played how it went down against Dallas yeah
totally for sure for sure what is being said in so game seven they score for for anyone that wasn't
watching the jet score with like two minutes left and then like three seconds left or something
And I'm curious, what was said, like, in the locker room after they tied it with three seconds left?
And then what was said at the end of the game, too, after they've, after you've lost?
Like, what was the vibe in there?
What were boys saying?
Yeah, I would, like, I was a wreck after we lost the game.
I remember, like, I think, like, that's probably one of our biggest regrets for, like, most of us is, like, that intermission before the first overtime.
Like, it was just kind of like, holy fuck, what just happened.
Like, yeah.
You know, like, I was sitting on the bench, like, punching guys.
I was like, fuck, boys, we're going around too.
And then, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Like, and then all of a sudden it's like, you know, they get one.
It's like, okay, we're fine.
And but, like, we struggled in five on six all year.
I think we led the league in it by like five goals.
Like, it wasn't even close.
We allowed it so many times throughout the year.
And it bit us in the bottom in the end.
And it's just like, I don't know.
I think that's one of the biggest learning moments for me
and probably a lot of other guys.
too. It was just like after we gave up that lead, like we needed to find a way to come out of a little more juice than we did in the overtimes. And, um, you know, luckily we, you know, we got it to double over time kind of we found our bearings and had some looks. And, you know, that's just how it goes sometimes. Yeah, that's how she breaks. Jesus Christ. Insane. Well, dude, I'm excited about this season, big time. Big off season changes, you know, but you got the right group to get off on the right foot, I think will be big for you guys. It's kind of two years in a row where you're trying to chase it last minute. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So.
that'll be exciting, but I know you got the crew in there.
Tell people who, you know, who does what on the blues?
Like, who's the best at sewer, who sucks at sewer?
Like, who's playing?
Yeah, who's playing?
Who's playing?
Who's playing?
Who's playing?
I can't believe there's chess on the plane.
Yeah.
Yeah.
There's a few guys, I think, um, uh, hofer hallway play.
Um, I think, uh, Thomas is a player.
I think he's really good at chess.
Not a guru.
That checks on.
Suggerud's a chess player.
Yeah, there's a few
for some reason.
Like, it used to be
like Nick Letty played.
I think Parakeko might play too.
So, yeah,
there's quite a few guys
that just play on their phones.
Sewer players,
like Torpchenko's really good.
Bouchenich.
The two Russians are pretty good.
Like, all of our Swedes are pretty good.
Oh, yeah.
So like Broberg and Bergrin,
you know, that young Stenberg.
was all the Swedes are pretty talented usually um in terms of like north americans i'd say i'm
definitely up there okay um the worst players though uh like snugger rude may you Logan mayu
uh hofer's like hofer's gotten better he used to be the worst but he's like most improved now
he's working on it yeah yeah like camp fowler's like he's like the most games in the circle he's
good so like he dominates quite a bit um tomer will play
like every once in a while.
And when he does,
he just comes in and sewers guys
and gets out quick.
So we have like,
our sewer game just very like,
uh,
dynamic.
There's a lot of different moving parts all the time.
It sounds like Tomer's,
Tomer's coming in and going full of kamikaze.
Yeah,
I think like whatever having Bucci,
you get into it a little bit,
he'll just come play sewer and sewer bootchie the whole game.
And then leave.
Yeah.
He's just trying to get Bucci out.
He doesn't even care if he wins.
Like,
yeah.
I love it.
Dude,
I do want to take a quick second though,
because I love whenever we get St.
Louis guys on the show and, you know, past and present. It's, it's one of these teams and one of these
cities where I feel like even a lot of guys in the U.S. who grew up playing in Northeast like us
in Michigan, Minnesota, they don't really know about St. Louis. And a pound for pound,
every person who has played there is currently playing there, has spent time there, absolutely
loves this place. What is it about the Blues organization and that city and the vibe that you've all
created that is just so incredible because it's like I do think more fans hockey fans need to realize
that St. Louis is a gem that people love being in. Yeah, man. It's like you don't really get it
when people tell you like when I got drafted and you know guys call you and whatnot. But it's a credit
to like the alumni like Bernie Ferdico and Brett Hull and like the Plague brothers and like you go
all the way back to and they just like you never forget the history in St. Louis. I feel like.
and the alumni is so strong there,
and they're around,
and they're involved with the team,
and they're talking to us,
and they're there if you want to bounce ideas off of
and stuff like that.
So I think that aspect to it is really cool.
Like, the people are amazing.
Like, it really does have, like, a small town feel.
Like, everyone's so nice.
It seems like you see the same people over and over
at the same restaurants.
And, like, it's an amazing place to be a player.
Like, the fans, they never stop showing up
through anything.
like we've had obviously our bad moments throughout the years and that I've been there so far
and they just don't stop showing up.
You don't see like the other teams that struggle how the crowds start to disappear.
It just doesn't happen in St. Louis.
They just,
all they want is consistency and hard work and effort and like they just,
they truly appreciate that stuff.
So I think it's like that's why it's so cool to play there and be a player for the blues.
Like it really is special and not something I think any of us take lightly when you when you put
the jersey and it's got sneaky great golf.
Yeah.
Sneaky good food.
There's a lot of like,
there's not like a ton to do,
but it gets repetitive,
I would say.
Like you kind of do the same restaurants and spots over and over where,
you know,
the New Yorks and L.A.s have options.
But the places you do go to are amazing and,
and you deal with the same people all the time.
So you kind of become a regular at places.
Oh,
yeah.
That's the fun part of it.
I think about living there is and playing there.
It's just like, feels like a small town and it's fun to be a part of.
The classics are worth it, dude.
Do they are, man.
You got to really.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I do want to circle back.
You were talking about your boy Ozzie and his mom, Kim.
Yeah.
I think it's such a cool story that you do with ASL and that becoming a huge part of your life.
And you actually designed two blues hats that incorporate ASL in the design to benefit the,
the deaf incorporation in St. Louis, which is unbelievable, dude.
But you've been studying it for like 10 years now.
And I want to.
know what a part of that process was the most fun for you of designing the hats.
Designing the hats. Man, honestly, I think was the reception it got, like, and how, like,
popular they were. Like, I was not expecting that. When the blues, like, came to me with the idea
to do it, I was obviously pumped and, like, talked to Ozzy and Oasis and Orcs right away. And I was
like, you guys got any input? Like, what do you think? Like, whatever. So, yeah, that was really cool.
And like I said, the way the fans ate it up, they sold out like immediately and we were able to order some more actually, which they weren't planning on.
So got like two full orders sold out of them and especially the ones with the sign on it.
People love them and I see them around St. Louis and the ranks all the time.
So pretty special.
I think just that people bought into the idea and the story.
I truly believe it's one of the most unique hockey stories ever that we'll see.
and obviously it's still being written,
but these guys are so special.
Their mom is so special.
And what they've been through and to be where they're at now is pretty impressive.
So I think for me, like being their best friend, you know, they call me a brother.
Like it's pretty, it's just like me being in a position to help them out and spread awareness about it is pretty cool.
Just about ASL and that community and their story.
It's so amazing, man.
I think it's so cool what you're doing is,
what's the most complex thing that you can say?
Are you still dialed in your abilities?
I mean, yeah, like I'm pretty good,
but I don't know like a ton of signs still.
Like I have to spell everything.
So it kind of takes me a while sometimes to like say some stuff.
But, you know, I'm still learning.
Like it's hard because in the season I don't do it as much and I lose my touch.
And then, you know, I come back in the summer.
I'm around them more and we use it and I get better at it again.
So, yeah, like, I basically.
I basically could say anything.
It just might take me a while to spell it all out.
Yeah, anything you can spell, you can...
Still counts.
Yeah, exactly.
I need your moves to have some, like, face-off plays
that you guys are signing back and forth.
Yeah, see, if I could just teach my line mates some of the stuff.
You guys would be dialed, yeah.
You got to get the Canadian and the American anthems going,
because they always got people signing the anthems.
I know, yeah.
See, that would, like, I'd have to grind that a little bit.
That would probably take me a second, but...
But, yeah, I always, like, watch those people, though,
and see if I could pick anything up and like learn something.
So it's kind of funny.
Or like concerts.
Like once you start seeing or like practicing sign and being involved in it,
you just like look for it all over the place.
And it's funny how it finds you.
Like I'll have people like tap me on the shoulder and like start signing to me in like a grocery store.
Yeah.
And I'm like, oh shit.
Like I got to lock in here.
Yeah.
Sometimes I'm like slow down.
I'm not like fluid like just boastful for me.
So you know.
But like I'm good like.
like the first introduction like my name's Jake like I can do all that real fast it's just if the
conversation could take yeah yeah said to me too you're like I'm a little slow yeah but
you're better than 99% of people so that's yeah I do try I do try yeah well we got to get
the the hats popped up on on the on the show here Chris yeah for sure do you have more I think
are they sold out like I've had so many people asked me about this and I might have to talk to
the blues and see if we can do something and get them back on sale or something. But I do have
like another little project coming out. Okay, sick. That I'm doing tomorrow with partner with the
NHL. So I don't know what I'm allowed to say. So I'm not going to say it. Wait, wait, wait.
But some stuff will come out. I don't know when. But yeah, there's some other stuff in the works.
And I'm going to continue to try and, you know, build on this and do some more things.
There you go. So yeah, we'll sync up on that. Whenever that launches. Yeah, for sure. I'd appreciate
that. Thank you. For sure. Yeah. Dude, can you, can you tell people about,
Schenner's bet with you for your first NHL goal
that I believe he rigged somehow,
but it was incredible.
Yeah, crazy.
Yeah, he was saying it for like a few games too.
Like, so obviously I lived with him
my first couple years in camps, I would say.
And then I played nine games at 19.
So he just, he kind of told me I could live with them
for the nine games.
If I stayed, I'd move out.
And if I didn't, I'd be going back to junior.
So anyway, like I was living with them.
And yeah, we're playing the Kings at home.
It was home opener and he's like,
okay, if he scored tonight, I'll buy you a Wagyu steak
and we'll get it smoked up at home
and like I'll do it really nice for you and whatever.
So I was like deal.
And he made the deal on the road before.
Like he's like, I'll take you out to a nice stick house
to get you a Wagyu.
But I couldn't score.
So he finally had to just, yeah, we're playing LA.
I literally like, I think someone changed.
I came on the ice.
Just kind of like nobody picked me up
and skated right back door.
He found me.
He was a tap-in.
And yeah, it was so funny, man.
Like after the game, I'd like tell him the bet and everything.
It was, it was a good reaction.
And the boys loved it because he ended up inviting like six, seven people over.
Oh, amazing.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah.
And like, everybody got way of goo.
So they were like, hell yeah.
Dude, so much better to do it at home anyway.
Yeah.
Honestly, it was where he had to cook it and like, yeah.
Like, I told him, I was like, well, you did it to yourself, man.
Like, you fed me a tap.
You know what this clearly is he had just recently perfected how to cook steak.
And he was like, I'm just going to show off to the boys here.
Yeah, 100%.
Yeah, he's betting every night, Dan.
He's like, same bet, same bet, same bet.
We're good.
Oh, he's good on the grill, man.
He's really good at it.
I mean, if you're cooking Wago on the grill, you probably know what you're doing.
You got it dialed.
He's dialed.
Dude, so I need to find out if you think I'm a psychopath because I got chirped really hard for this,
but I know you are also a rab guy as I am I.
And I saw you saying because you like the fat, like the fat and ribi is amazing.
So I had, I was out.
We were out eating a really nice rabbi.
and it had a lot of fat on the side, like a ton, thick, thick, you know?
Normally if it's a little bit, I just cut it like it's a regular piece and just eat it.
You know, and I'm like, all good.
But it was so big that it was kind of like, all right, this is aggressive.
So I was like trimming off some of it.
But then I was cutting that fat into like smaller bites and then pairing it with other bites from the middle of my steak.
Okay, dude, thank you.
Thank you.
Yeah.
Everyone was like, you are a psychopath.
Yeah.
It's the best part.
I was literally, as you were telling the story, I was going to be like, I thought you were going to say like, you don't use it, you don't eat it. And then I was going to say, don't do. What you got to do is cut it up and eat it with the part that has no fat.
That's exactly what I do. Wow, man. You two. You two are pros. You too. You're missing out, Dan. You're missing out. I, listen, I'm out. I was about to be like, that's crazy. But Jake is doing it too. Maybe I got to give this a shot. When you think about it, like, that's actually pretty smart. Like it is all the flavor, dude. Having a little bit of that in there and each bite.
It's nice.
Yeah.
It's like not everybody I'm doing it, but like, no, I might put a little fat in.
Yeah.
It makes it in, dude.
Yeah, for sure.
It's like a little garnish.
It's like a little garnish.
Yeah, I was going to say, it's like a little topping there.
Yeah, exactly.
God, that fires me up, dude.
I could not wait to ask you that.
That's hilarious.
That's awesome.
All right, Jake, we're going to close you out here with a couple of games that we play
with all of our guys.
The first one is going to be your Netters speed run.
So I'm going to ask you about eight or nine questions here.
And you're going to give me an answer.
answer as fast as you can. You can take some time if you need it. But we kind of want your knee jerk.
What's your gut check reaction here? Okay. First one is going to be, what is your death row dinner?
I got to just steak, mashed steak, sweet potatoes and probably some asparagus. I love that sweet
potato addition there. Yeah, I'm a big sweet potato guy. Okay. Healthy, healthy death row, I got to say.
That's Schenner. Hey, that's Schenner, too.
That is a healthy, you know what?
I mean, boys.
That's pretty embarrassing now that I'm thinking about it.
Boys, time out.
You said fast answers.
First thing, we're talking about steak and it just came to my mind.
Time out.
You two are putting dabs of fat on each bite of steak.
It's not that healthy.
Yeah.
True.
Oh, yeah.
That is good.
All right.
Your next one.
What is your favorite place in the world?
I'll go Hawaii.
Oh, amazing.
What island?
What island?
Maui.
Yep.
I just went this summer with Ozzie and Oasis and our girlfriends, and it was amazing.
God, love it.
Yeah.
What is your go-to cocktail?
Old-fashioned.
Oh, God.
Paired with a steak?
Yeah, that's fantastic.
What is the best type of shoe?
Like, just a sneaker, like that?
Is that what you're looking for?
Or specific?
Interpret it any way you want.
Yeah, if you like a dress shoe, cool.
If you like an Air Force One, cool.
Like whatever you think is the best shoot.
It doesn't matter.
Whatever is the first.
Yeah, I would say maybe like the low dunks, like Nike low dunks.
That's probably like my favorite shoe.
Okay.
Yeah.
What is your favorite comfort movie?
Oh, comfort movie.
Maybe grown-ups.
Oh, nice.
Hell yeah.
That is great.
That's a good one.
Okay.
What is the perfect amount of people to go to dinner with?
Perfect is four.
Oh, okay.
Perfect is four.
Like I thought six originally, but it's hard to hear that third guy on the other, but you know?
Yes, totally.
Like, we always go, like me and all the young guys on the team, we're always above six, but like a four is perfect.
It's true.
You get above six, you're not even talking to some of the other guys.
Exactly.
There's just different convo's going on and it's not, you know, you're not at dinner with all of them.
Yeah, like dinner.
Exactly.
Dinner ends.
I go up and I'm like, Jake, did you have a nice time? I didn't speak to you the whole time.
Yeah, exactly. Yeah. All right. What is the best holiday? Christmas. Yes. Yes, sir, it is. That's the
correct answer. Yeah. What is your favorite article of clothing? Oh, can I say hats? You sure can.
Great pick. And we're talking like ball cap like we're wearing? Yeah, like never really a flatbrum guy, always like a ball cap.
but I have insane, just too many of them.
Yeah.
Same.
Oh my God.
I'll put golf apparel.
Close second.
I love.
Oh, nice.
Awesome answer.
That is a very good answer.
It's a close second.
Like, I love blowing cash on like golf like Malbon and all the Sunday red.
Like I love that stuff.
All right.
And then what is the best ever video game?
Best ever video game?
Fortnite.
Yeah.
Like I don't play it anymore, but like I had a good video game.
four-year run where it was like the
cultural phenomenon I ever had you know
I will put MLB close second
I play like MLB now nice
nice okay all right and then finally
what is the best thing you can cook
probably steak yeah
unfortunately
we're like truly dude after after this episode
comes out Chris this kid's name
nickname is going to be jakey steaks
steaks yeah that's it's not
yeah I didn't think about that
that's so good that's so good that's so good
That's so good.
Okay.
And then our next game, Jake, is called pass shoot score.
We do this with everybody.
We are giving you, I'm going to give you three things.
Dan and I will each give you three things in a category.
There are three things we know you like and you just have to rank them.
Pass is your least favorite because passing the puck's cool, but it's not that cool.
Shooting is your next favorite because we like pucks on net and scoring is your absolute favorite because we're trying to like the lamb.
All right.
Your first category is St.
Louis Golf.
Okay.
So pass shoot score.
Old Worson Country Club.
Bel Reeve Country Club or St. Louis Country Club?
I get to pass Belrieve because I haven't got the chance to play my own ball there yet.
Oh, okay.
So I'm going to pass that one just because I haven't put my game to the test there yet.
Fair, okay.
I will shoot, I'll shoot Old Werson and I will score the St. Louis Country Club.
St. Louis. Okay.
And hey, Chris Pronger told us to ask you those specifically, and he said,
really the sleeper to put in was boon valley where's that one yeah i would probably score boon okay
boon's one like boon feels like you're in like a different part of the world like you're down there in
this valley and it's you go play in the morning there's like this low fog and it's like nobody ever out
there he plays many holes is like they'll allow you to it's it's paradise down there but it's a bit
of a drive so we don't get down there quite as often but we love playing boon yeah that sounds perfect do my
Yeah.
There's like, our dad lives right by a course, so we play a lot and we're back in Maine.
And it's like, same deal.
No one's out there.
And we'll just like, I won't even play in order.
You know, I'll play like five, six, seven, then jump over to 13.
Then you just go bouncing around.
And I'm like, this is the dream, too.
Exactly.
That's amazing.
That's more like booed, I would say.
Like you go out there for like a day and hopefully play like more than, you know,
hopefully close to 36 holes or something like that.
Yeah, that's huge.
Yeah.
Yeah, we like going out there.
I love that.
God.
Fantastic.
All right.
Your next one's going to be songs.
I'm excited about.
this category. So your passion
score is Bust a Move by Young
MC. Hurt's So Good by
John Cougar-Mellon Camp and
it's a long way to the top, ACDC.
Oh.
Um,
uh, hurt so good, bust a move and
okay, I'm gonna, I hate to do this, but I'm
gonna pass long way to the top.
Oh, wow. Dude, I thought that was gonna win.
That's not my favorite ACDC song. That's why.
That is shocking.
I love that song. And I'm gonna, we're going to
see him like I think the team's gonna go see them in St. Louis
September 8 so I'm fired up
dude that is unreal. Hopefully
they don't see this dude otherwise you're
yeah seriously
but like if you would have named like a couple
other ones they would have been one but these other two
and then I'm gonna
I will shoot
bust a move and I will
score
it so good
I love it dude
very eclectic movie taste on the kid
I put bust to move above because it's kind of like my
karaoke like steaky oh that's good i know every word almost so like that's my go to
um dude i i monti's got pretty good music taste so the fact that he endorses you as the locker
yeah j like that's pretty huge yeah however dude i do know that you are an edm guy and now we're
now we're talking my language so yeah have you been to any shows recently uh i went to john
summit at stampede this year um to get there which was so fun you got to come to stampede you
You're like the fifth person in two weeks that has said that to us recently, and I'm kind of like, next year we got to go.
It's fun, man.
Like, it's crazy and it's like overpopulated and like kind of greasy sometimes if you get on a couple day run.
But it's like you pick a good weekend with good performers and it's like it's one of the best.
It's so fun.
I mean, do we go to Coachella every year.
We can't complain about greasy.
Yeah, yeah.
True.
I've done stage coach, but I haven't done Coachella, yeah.
but stage coach was sick.
Yeah, we'll get, hey, we'll get it dialed next year.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That'll be special.
Yeah.
I've seen like a lot of, like I've seen Loud Luggery, Odessa,
great.
Hell yeah.
God, Z.
Yeah, I've seen a lot of, a lot of people.
David Getta, it's like, I love it too.
You got to get Maui on the list.
Yeah?
Maurice does one hell of a show.
It's unbelievable.
Okay.
I'll remember that.
One of our boys became kind of like, like a semi-big DJ in New York.
for a couple summers. And he, uh, did a show that he was opening for loud luxury before they were
huge. And I, Dan and I were helping him like, be a grody. And so we were helping them too. And then,
then they blew the fuck up. And I was like, I've actually rodee the loud, loud luxury. I was like,
I think I am famous now. Yeah. It was actually insane. Yeah. Yeah, a very good resume builder for me.
Yeah. For sure. Yeah. All right. Your next one.
this is important to us New England boys over here.
Your next one is Tom Brady Super Bowls.
So pass shoot score bucks over Chiefs,
Pats over Falcons,
Pats over Seahawks.
Probably,
oh, that's tough, man.
I know.
Because I like the Chiefs one
because he like beat Prime Pat.
Same, dude.
Older.
You know what I mean?
And dude, as like Brady guys.
I'll give you what I was thinking.
you guys tell me what I think I was going to pass the Seahawks shoot the Chiefs and score the Falcons.
I think that's the perfect answer, dude, Jake, I made perfect dancer. I think it's a perfect dancer.
Because the Chief's one's cool because he beat Prime Patty when he was older and it's like, hey, I'm still the goat.
Dude, and also Jake, I love that one so much because it's the only Brady Bowl that we didn't have to fucking sweat through.
Like, he just won that game.
And it was like so fun.
It was such a fun watching experience because I just watched him absolutely dick someone down all the time.
Yeah, yeah.
God, dude.
It was so sick.
How did you get,
how did you become a Brady guy?
My dad was.
Okay.
Huge.
Yeah, my dad loved Tom.
Love Tom Brady.
So yeah, we always grew up watching them.
Yeah.
Dude, we, yeah, God.
Some of the best memories ever did.
My God.
Oh, yeah.
He was so fun to watch.
Oh, iconic.
It's funny.
Actually, literally before we hopped on here,
I was like scrolling reels and it like came up to some video.
It was like, Tom Brady's IQ.
And I was like, God, we had it so good.
for solo.
I'll do that.
I get on YouTube,
I get on Brady YouTube rabbit hole some night
where I'm just like, okay, dude,
all 50 touchdowns in five minutes,
sounds good.
Yeah, yeah.
Legit.
All right, your last one here, Jake,
is going to be Halloween costumes.
Your past shoot score is Shrek,
the Backstreet Boys,
and the famous hot dog.
The famous hot dog.
The hot dog's funny.
It is funny.
It's like a good tradition we got going.
But I'm gonna pass the hot dog.
Dude, what?
I haven't you even the hot dog three years in a row now?
Yeah, yeah, I have.
But it's just like, I just do it at the rink when like we have the children's hospital.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
So like I don't actually wear it like on Halloween or for our party or anything.
Dude, and it's hot and it's like uncompy, but it is a good story.
Like it is.
Yeah, what, how did it happen though?
It's objectively funny.
It also like, yeah, I just got to cut sewer with it when I was a rookie and then Shatter's like
do it again.
I'm like, and then so the media people love that I did it two years in a row.
So they're like, you should do it three.
I'm like, okay.
I don't really, I don't really care.
Yeah, yeah.
It's also like, it reminds me of any, I think you should leave now.
So like it just makes it.
Yeah, right, yeah.
So true, did it.
So, but yeah, I'll pass that one.
Unfortunately, I know everybody loves it.
But, um, and then I will shoot Shrek score Backstreet Boys.
Backstreet Boys was fun.
Like, was fine.
We had a little entry.
We had a little like dance and, like,
Like, when we walked in the party.
Yeah.
So that one was fun.
Everybody liked it.
Yeah.
It was good.
That was all time.
Listen, you got to mix it up at Halloween.
I don't really trust people that don't fuck with Halloween.
You know,
it's your favorite all day.
But if you don't go for it, then I can't trust you.
I agree.
You got to like put some effort in for sure.
Like do a little bit of something.
No question.
We got a good squad for that.
Everyone goes pretty all out for their costumes.
Really?
That's great.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
All right.
Well, Jake, we got to get you on to the golf course.
Yeah.
Unbelievable, dude.
So fun.
Thank you for popping on.
Before we let you go,
is there anything you want to shout out,
anything you want to plug?
What's going on in your life?
No, not much, man.
Just golfing.
Excited for the season.
Going back to St. Louis in like 12, 13 days.
So I'm pumped to see all the fellas and just get back at it.
So thanks for having me on, boys.
It was fun, fun and traveling with you guys.
Absolutely blast.
We'll do it again soon.
Okay, sounds good.
Thanks, guys.
What a shout out to Jake Neighbors.
unbelievable interview. Dan, I love when we meet a guy who we don't know yet but is boys with all our boys. And every single one of them goes, oh my God, you're going to love this guy. And without failure, it delivers what a stud. It's just it's the it's it's what you hope for in life. You hope that you go through life. And when people say, hey, I'm about to meet Dan. I'm about to meet Chris, Evan. The other people go like this, wow, that's going to be special for you. You pray to God. When you speak with me, speak well.
speak well and Jake knows that now for confirmed he's like oh shit this is everyone loves me yeah yeah
you don't want him to say something like uh don't bring up the smell yeah when you meet somebody
that's what i worry about you know it's like oh like it's my number one fear is like he's got bad
breath what do they say yeah yeah it would suck i can't even think about that good lord but anyway
huge shout out to jake neighbors unbelievable human being can't wait to see all the unreal things
he does this season let's kick it to an ad bring
and then jump on back in.
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls,
if you have not signed up for BetMGM yet,
what are you waiting for?
I've been telling you over and over and over
and you need to listen.
Today is the day.
Today is the day you listen
because you simply use bonus code netters.
That's N-E-T-E-R-S when you sign up
and you get up to $1,500 bucks
in a new player offer on your first wager.
Here's how it works.
You just download the app.
Very simple.
Download the Bet-M-G-M-G-M app
and then when you sign up,
use that bonus code netters.
And then if you deposit at least 10 bucks and you place your first wager on any game,
then if that bet loses, you get up to $1,500 in bonus bets.
That is insane.
And then after that, you get the odds boost tokens.
You get the second chance promos.
You get the same game parlays, which are incredible and I'm addicted to.
So so much more, it's amazing.
You are going to have a blast.
Use that code netters, bet MGM, make it legendary.
Listen, loyal followers of netters.
Follow followers of the almost Friday network that see us across a lot of platforms.
Know that we've got Friday breaks going.
Go give it a follow.
Go check it out.
Friday breaks.
We're opening cards all over the place.
And our sweet prints, boys, hey, listen, now that we're in the card game, it's like,
it's all baseball, basketball and football.
Everyone says hockey cards are a joke.
Everyone says the hockey's a joke.
NHL's joke.
No one cares.
It's the forgotten fourth sport.
Well.
Who says that?
Well, well, well.
A lot of people have fools.
Those are fools.
And our sweet prince has something to say about it.
Because this weekend, Macklin Celebrini's one-of-one outburst gold Young Guns rookie card sold for $1.28 million.
And God, it feels good, dude.
Incredible there.
Not even an auto.
Insane, dude.
Highest card non-Gretzky.
Highest non-Gretzky card ever.
Gretzky sold one for three-mill, I think.
his rookie, his, his rookie card.
Did it? Yeah. There you go.
Yeah. We've got it. We finally got an active NHLer in the one million dollar card club.
It's phenomenal. I mean, kudos and congratulations to ever had that. I mean, it's just, that's a special moment.
It's this guy, I think his name is James, Dan. Literally, he's like a regular dude, sharks fan,
walked into like his random, his local card shop, dude, his LCS and just grabbed a hobby box and rips it.
and it's Mac.
He told the story where he's,
his wife and kids are asleep upstairs,
and he pulls it.
He's like,
oh my God.
And he's trying not to shout and wake the kids out
because he was the biggest pull of his life.
Also, he got offered,
oh man,
I got to remember that,
but he got offered 400K or something right away,
and he turned it down to try his luck at auction,
goes to auction 1.28 mil.
Wow.
Bang.
I mean,
I mean,
that's the move.
Dude,
if you're getting,
if you're getting offered that much,
like right off the rip,
you got to know something special is happening. So also kudos to this guy. But I mean,
can you imagine, we're in the card game. So I imagine it every day. But imagine pulling a card
and your life changing. It is just, it's gambling. Yeah. It's gambling for kids. It's, it's playing
the lottery. It's the same thing. But it's just a little more exciting. It's got a little bit more
juice to it. So I highly encourage it. The rush is unbelievable. So let me ask as a neophyte,
it's the young guns gold like is there something it's one of one you're saying so this is like
they intentionally made it like so so rare what makes it rare is it the gold backing or something like
that it's it's it's great question it's all about the different designs and the different releases
and then that young guns gold was a release and that one of one means they only made one macklin
oh that's cool of the young guns gold and it says and on it like like sometimes they're to 10 so
you get one that says four of 10 on it so you're like oh there's only 10 of these and I
I have in the fourth one.
And this one says one dash one.
And you're like, oh my God.
Right.
So that's obviously what's making it so, so valuable.
That's incredible.
One of one is just special.
Cars are back, guys.
I have a list of, and shout out this dude on Reddit, dude.
My God.
But he made a list.
He tracked down every single young guns outburst gold one of ones and their current
status.
So it's like, Macklin-Sellibrini pulled, as in like someone's found it.
Sold on eBay, August 15th, 2026 for 1.2,8,
million dollars.
I can't believe eBay is allowing transactions that big.
Right.
Such a good point, Dan.
I mean, that's fucking great.
eBay is just letting milly deals go down.
That's crazy.
Can you imagine mailing that card to somebody who gave you a million and a half dollars?
Evan, that's what I'm saying, dude?
And you sent it in the mail?
That can't be allowed.
That needs to be a hand-to-hand transfer.
Yeah.
I'm like, you pass me that.
the money, dude. You hire a
career.
So that's, I have a, I have a
yager rookie card, but I think it's probably worth
jack shit. Okay. Interesting.
Well, I don't know.
Or track that shit down, dude. I mean, yeah,
I would track that down, brother, and
check out if there's anything special on the
back, because like, if it's just a normal rookie card.
I think it's in like one of my
boxes is shit. I'll go find it.
I don't know if it's valuable, but it is
yogurt. So, um,
pretty dope.
There's a ton of them have been pulled, but most of them go for like
hundreds of bucks or a couple of like a thousand in most of them in the hundreds because it's hockey
Logan Cooley Dan pulled sold on eBay April 10th 2025 10, 10,200 Canadian.
It's nice.
It's a nice little rip.
Luke Hughes pulled currently being graded on PSA, which is a good sign, especially if that comes
in at a 10.
Jack Hughes pulled, sold on eBay March 15th, 2026, 24,900.
80 Canadian.
That's cheap.
Should have been higher.
Should have been higher.
Wait, when was that sold in March?
Yeah, yeah, this year.
Like that just happened.
So that's post, that's post Olympics, dude.
That should have been higher.
That's some bullshit.
Whoa, great point, Dan.
A one of one gold outburst.
Not pulled.
Connor Bedard, one of one gold outburst out there lurking.
Leo Carlson.
One of one gold outbursts out there lurking.
Dude, we have to find these.
And then, dude, this one.
Evan, this one, dude.
And keep in mind, these are rookies, bro.
Like, that's what they do, young guns.
Evgeny Malkin, gold one-of-one young gun out there, unpole.
And, dude, that means it's in a box from a billion years ago that is just like, yeah, like, that's just somewhere.
You need to go to, yeah, like, where are those boxes now?
You got to figure, like, they're in some card shop that's dusty.
You know what scares me, though?
I would not be surprised at all
if like that card has been pulled
and it's just like some fucking kid pulled it
and was like oh whatever and like it's
just like sitting in a shoe box somewhere
Yeah yeah
The bottom of a toy bin
Totally
Getting torn up
Like yeah and Badaard and Leo
Is that is interesting
Working Dan
Do we have a shape? Do we have a shaper
Young Gun Gold one of one?
Let me see but hold on I just wanted to shout this out to
Hi-Z Dan
gold one of one sold for 9,000 U.S.
and Poo's sold on February 24th,
2025 for 20 grand Canadian.
Come on, poo! That is sick.
I would die if I pulled a Heisey one of one.
A Heisey one of one would be so sick.
Okay, who did you just ask?
That would be incredible.
Let me see.
Shafer not found.
Dad not found.
Dad not found.
Wow.
Also, like, is there a Crosby?
Is there a Crosby?
Is there a Crosby one of one?
Gold,
Young Guns?
Let me see.
Crosby.
Because that,
no, I imagine.
It doesn't exist.
There's a,
Drew Doughty,
not pulled.
Not pulled.
La Tang's got pulled.
He's on eBay right now.
Nice.
Mark Andre Fleury pulled.
La Tang pulled.
Crosby doesn't exist.
Malkin, not pulled.
I find that crazy that Crosby.
That is crazy.
They probably made a different type of card for him.
Like they probably made his own insert.
You know,
like something even more special.
Or guys like Sid could easily be like this.
I'm not about this gambling game.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You know,
like I could see him being out on cards.
I want,
I need,
I need that Leo Carlson card.
I need it.
Yeah.
And I will find it.
I'll take the Connor card.
That's fantastic.
Dude, if Mac is 18.8 mill a year
and sold for one,
1.2.8 million and Leo is 18 a year. Then, you know, this is simple math. That's 900. That's 900.
Yeah. I need that. Yeah. I think the card should be worth their one year of their salary.
All right. So we're, we are hunting gold young guns one of one now. Leo Carlson. Yeah. That's our
does it say what packs? Does it say what packs they're in? I'm not seeing that info on here.
Young guns. Hockey. Hockey is just so simple enough that they're like, there's only one hockey card, guys. It's just hockey.
Just pull a pack.
They're like just fine, you idiot.
I mean, it's Upper Deck Series 2 maybe.
I don't know.
I think you just get hobby boxes at upper deck and then you pray to the old gods and the
new that Leo's in there.
Yeah.
I mean, you're genuinely trying to find a needle in a haystack, but here's the thing.
I brought a fucking big ass magnet and I'm going to find it.
Okay.
Dude, I thought you were going to say magnifying glass and I was like, smart.
And then you said magnet and I was like, what?
And then I was like, wait, genius.
Needle.
Real smart.
Genius, dude.
Really good.
Dude, speaking of other accolades, we have the NHL rankings that came out, and I just got
when that Connor McDavid has been ranked in 99.
Is he the only one?
He is the only one.
I think it is stupid when people are 99s in this game.
Oh, interesting.
Because it's such a thing in Madden, like it's a honor.
You know, who's 99?
Madden. No, I think I like it, dude, because it's like that year. I think it's, you know,
I think it is, I think it is so dumb. It's so dumb in my opinion because, first of all, FIFA does
this the best. No one gets higher than a 94, 95 in FIFA. And I think that that is correct, dude,
it's, it's like, this is the, this is the L. Prez pizza. It's the port night pizza, yeah, yeah.
Where it's like, dude, there's no such thing as a perfect slice of pizza. There's no such thing as a perfect
cocky player. And like if you want to be a douche about it, I wouldn't do this. I am too big of a
person to do this. So make that, note that down. But like, why doesn't he want a Stanley Cup?
If he's a 99, why doesn't he have a Stanley Cup? Oh, shots fired. Shots fire. I wouldn't say that.
I wouldn't say that. But other people might. But you would factor that if you were the one who is
programming the video game, you might factor that in and knock him down to 98.
I think, I think the argument people would make is like, well, 99's not perfect. It's a
100, my point is, if you are a 99, then you are an unstoppable human being.
Right.
And no one is that.
So I'm like, listen, make him like, make him a 98, a 97.
I mean, look at that.
His numbers 97 is perfect.
I just think it is, I think it is more realistic when we allow players to max out at like
96.
And that is maybe a lame old hat take.
But yeah, I just think it's silly when all these players are 99s.
And like, I understand that it, Chris, you may.
make a good point. What they're doing it for is like, this is an elite crew. It's, it's an accolades to
achieve. And I get that. But I'm kind of like, make the games more realistic. FIFA does it. And
FIFA is the greatest sports game that exists. I do hear you, Dan, that it's like, well, actually,
now I just opened up a whole new can of worms. I was about to say, it's making someone a 99 is tough
because I'm going, is that person never going to get better? If they're better next year, what are they,
there's nowhere for them to go. So it made me wonder is McDavid's best, best peak 99.
McDavid days behind him.
Like, is he, is he 30?
Like, how old is he?
Is he 30?
Like, McDavid at 28 years old,
it's probably the best
McDavid will ever be.
I want to, I want to address this.
But for people viewing the show,
seeing you now with a different background,
just jumping in midpoint there is going to be awesome.
You didn't see anything.
Nothing happened.
You didn't see anything, dude.
Chris, Chris,
Chris is an ex-man and he can teleport from room to room.
Truly went nightcrawler status there.
Yeah, he's nightcrawler.
I should have, I should have screenshoted.
my background and then done the fake background.
Yeah.
Yeah.
No, but Chris, you're right.
Maybe this is EA Sports's way of saying that they think Connor has peaked.
Yeah.
And they're like, enjoy this year because this is his last 99 ever and good day.
You know what?
That must be tough when you are, when you work for EA sports and you are in charge of like
the ranking of these players, when you have an all timer, it must be a really sad day as
they get older when you go, this player can't be.
99 anymore.
Yeah.
Like the day that you go, okay, we're going to make Crosby like a 96 now.
That must suck.
I'm like, I'm like, what to do?
I would make them 99 until they died.
Respect.
Out of respect.
Like you, you work at EA Sports.
You have Yarm or Yager playing for the Florida Panthers as a 99.
99.
Wow.
It's like the masters.
Once you get in, you can always come back.
It's like, once you're a 99er, dude, it's, you know, keep it rolling.
That would be a fun, hey, that would be a fun, like, what do they call it?
game mode or, you know, whatever, where you can, you can play, there's, there's the regular
rankings, but then there's also a mode where anyone who was ever a 99 once is a 99 in the game.
So, yeah, like, you play the 99 game. It's just all 99. That'd be sick. That'd be great. But yeah,
I think it's too high. I think it's too high. I, you know, call me an old head if you want.
McDavid, 97, quote, Dan Powers. Yeah. I mean, like, sorry. He's just like, he wears number 97.
Let's take a quick break to here about Factor.
Factor is one of the greatest things in the game.
If we're talking about getting some good food in you,
if we're talking about eating well and trying to find the time to eat well and get the best meals.
Factor meals is going to be the greatest thing that you can ever do.
You know me.
I'm obsessed with fitness, nutrition, things like that.
I also love cooking.
So I really love good food and delicious.
meals and I know sometimes for a lot of you, we talked about last episode how insane all of these
delivery apps are. Things like, you know, you're ordering from food around your place. It's
getting delivered to your house. The delivery fees are out of control. You're tipping too much money.
It's so expensive. You can't be doing that. And also, you're not always eating that well and

You would not believe my NBA day yesterday.
You had an NBA day.
I had an NBA day yesterday.
It was Sunday.
I'm walking around.
I got two new neighbors.
Oh, dude, this is insane.
I got two new neighbors.
And?
So I'm not,
I'm not going to say who they are because I promised that I wouldn't reveal this to the public.
But let me just say that right, right next door to me here,
I've got a current Laker, very prominent current Laker, and a very prominent former Laker who have just moved in next door.
And I was like, what the fuck is going on?
Holy shit.
And then I go over to the Sim Club, to the golf club that Chris and I are members at, the little Sim Club, shout out Forward.
And I'm sitting there whacking some balls before I go out to the course and play my round.
Who walks in?
Paul George
Podcast P
Playoff P
just walks in
And he was like
You know can you like
What do I do here?
Like well how do I work this thing?
And I'm just looking at him
And I was like
Are you Paul George at Forward right now?
I can't believe you didn't ask him to come on netters
Oh dude I he's a professional
He's a literal podcaster
Like that would have made total sense
I I was so
After the news I had been given about my two new neighbors
I was like what's happening today?
What like?
the fuck is going on.
It was very insane.
You're going to get drafted to play.
Get ready.
It's true.
Or they're sick.
It's actually a coup by NBA All-Stars to turn netters into an NBA podcast.
Oh shit.
They're taking us over.
Fuck.
I like that, Dan.
I like that.
But that's exciting, dude.
I was pretty jealous when the, when the texts were coming in, I was like, what the fuck is that?
I'll say this for all the Celtics fans out there.
Paul looks great.
He looks great.
He looks healthy.
His swing looked good.
50 wins.
50 wins, at least.
I was very impressed.
Too bad he's not golfing on the basketball court, though.
Yeah.
Yeah, true.
Yeah.
Yeah, how's his jumper, dude?
Yeah.
But, you know, his back, his long as bad is probably great.
Yeah.
Unfortunately.
Oh, my God.
C.P.
Do you have a shark story for us?
Yeah, boys, I have, I was told a crazy story yesterday.
So this didn't, this isn't something that happened to you.
It's just a, uh, no, I don't.
just I just heard this story from first-hand person because we do a lot of fishing here.
Ev, we go in Maine, we'd fish for striped bass.
It's wonderful.
And it's getting really popular.
There's people out all over the place now, up and down, like our secret spots that I'm
like, no one goes here.
Now everybody goes, you know, whatever.
And I'm talking to this guy who lives up in Scarborough, which is like by Portland,
north of us.
And he loves striper fishing.
And Dan and I use little poppers that you bring right across the surface in its
fun because, you know, the fish come up and you hit it and it's like a big splash and it's,
you know, you see it all.
Harder to trick the real big fish because they're old.
They're veterans.
They've seen all this bullshit.
Yeah.
And if you really want the big fish, you kind of just put live bait down with a sinker and like get it down near the bottom where they are.
And I don't begrudge anyone doing that.
I'm just trying to, I'm trying to be such a good surfcaster that I can trick a big fish to come up.
So this guy I'm talking to in Scarborough, he has one of those.
You guys seen those kayaks that have pedals.
You know, it's like, yeah.
You sit in it like a bike and it's like, it kayaks you around.
Yeah, like a paddle-type deal.
Yep, he's in one of those and he takes mackerel and he chunks them.
So they're not alive, but they're extremely fresh.
It was just alive, you know, and he puts a hook through it.
And then he drops it down in a sinker.
And then he just coast, dude.
He lets it just crude.
The current takes him.
And so it looks like the mackerel's kind of like dragging along.
Big strippers hit it.
He's out the other day.
And he hears like a big rung.
rush of water. And he's like, oh, man, that might have been a school of stripers. That was so loud.
It definitely wasn't one striper hitting it, even a big one. It must have been a school, which
happens. And, you know, he just, he must have hooked one of them. And he hears the water.
And as he snaps his head around, launching out of the water, not that far from him, obviously,
on his kayak is a 10 foot long great white shark, smashes into the water, hook on his lip.
And it's like, and his line goes, the rod is like, the rod is like, you. The rod is like,
bent over, it's peeling out, and he's like, oh my God.
That's awesome.
So he grabs a knife and cuts the line as fast as he can to not have the rod go out and just
be away from this thing.
And the shark immediately flams in and then goes underwater.
And he's now like, okay, this thing is going to either, is now under me and is either
going to come up and just bite me in half and I will die or come up and launch and land on
top of me and I will die because it's 700 pounds.
And he's bike pedaling.
Yeah.
on his kayak away.
And he immediately
reaches into a bag
that he keeps on his kayak.
He's telling me this,
that he keeps on his kayak all time
and pulls out a gun.
Because there are
great whites everywhere now
in Maine.
And all the fishermen
have been like,
Y'll be prepared.
So he pulls out his gun
and he's biking, biking,
he's fucking got the gun out.
I actually got the gun out.
And Shark never surfaces again.
He continues by.
There was a dude's surf casting
on the rocks nearby.
And he said the guy was like,
Yeah, just saw what happened.
Like, I thought you were about to literally be eaten by a shark.
He gets away all as well.
And he's telling the story.
Like, isn't that crazy, dude?
And I was like, bro, I cannot fathom being that close to a great white shark on a peddling kayak, first of all.
Yeah, your butt is exposed with those too.
It's like, yeah, dude.
You are a sitting duck.
Yeah.
And so actually, let me pause there.
and I want your guys, tell me how you would react to a Great White Shark hooking your fresh
chunked mackerel while you were on a kayak in the middle of the ocean.
Dude, with all due respect, if you are kayaking period in the ocean, you're a fucking moron.
And you are asking for this type of shit to happen to you.
Like, put your kayak in a river, in a lake, but all you want, being that exposed in the open ocean,
is you're just asking for trouble.
But you're right on the shoreline.
You're not like in,
you can't see land.
I don't.
No, you're not because you're out there actively fishing.
Like just fish off the rocks, dude.
Like if you don't have a fishing boat,
how many times do we need to watch Jaws and hear the line,
we're going to need a bigger boat and you go out in a kayak, you horse's ass?
Yeah, what are you thinking?
He's going, what if we go in the other direction?
What if we need a smaller boat?
What if that's the answer?
I have an idea.
Those guys die.
Most of those guys, well, Quentin died.
I have an idea, Rick.
Why don't you go out in an inner tube and start throwing some fucking lures out there?
Why don't we get an inflatable seal?
Let's inflate the seal float and go out on that.
I love it.
His answer was a small boat and a handgun.
That'll do it.
Do I know this guy?
No, no, no, no, no.
Thank God.
So here's my next question, because now I'm, now I'm going.
fascinated and I started doing some digging. Dude, there have been, I think it's like 12,
uh, great white, 12 different great white sharks spotted in Scarborough this summer. There have
been two at long sands, Dan, like the other day the beach had to close. And all the, uh, I don't know
what ocean people are called, all the ocean scientists or whatever. Like marine biologists. Yeah,
marine biologists are like, yeah, the Great Whites, due to whatever changing water temperatures
or something, have completely just found.
They're migrating north.
It used to be like the Cape and Chatham.
Like, dude, Chatham Beach is like, there are signs that are like, do not swim.
Even though it's the most beautiful beach on the Cape, it's like, you can't go in here.
And all the marine biologists are like, this is, that's, that's Southern Maine and two more summers.
Like in two more summers, it's going to be like, you can go to these beaches.
They got us, dude.
You cannot swim here.
They got us.
And so, Dan, this is my question.
Like when, at what point do sharks just like win?
Like, have we lost the war to sharks?
Because they're like, hey, we are at this beach now and now we can't go into water anymore.
Yeah.
I mean, I think it's pretty simple.
Yeah, like that's it.
Once little Timmy starts waiting out to try to start body surfing and he turns into an appetizer,
I think we have lost.
I think we have officially lost that battle.
So then I said you could take, you know, like the surf buoys, right?
you could take the surf buoys and then across on weights across the whole beach just drop a net so fish can big wide so fish can get through but then the uh the the nature people started freaking out and they were like you don't understand the scallops I actually
turtles eat that you're ruining and I actually are here I agree with that I don't know the science behind it but I bet that that would mess up something with the ecosystem and we can't listen dude if they're they're they've been here longer they're prehistoric if they want to come in
and take my beach, they can take my beach.
We've taken plenty of stuff, okay?
It's about time something got taken from us humans.
And that is understandable.
This is my beach, dude.
I will not give up this beach.
Dude, Canada's next.
They're going to go up and get Canada after a.
Let them have Maine for a couple of summers.
And then I'm sorry.
Sorry, Canada.
You're fucked.
They're swimming up north.
At what point do the sharks grow legs and start to come on to land?
That's what I started to get worried.
And become street-top.
Yeah, like street sharks.
Yeah, if we get street sharks, we are fucked.
Well, you know what?
The second they sprout legs, then we can shoot them.
Right now.
And I get my beach back, dude.
Yeah, right now we can't shoot them.
We've got to just let them.
Well, here's the thing.
Actually, so I have two things, Evan, once, and I will not name names, but a kid when we were little in, like, I don't know, like, you know, very young school.
The teachers were asking us all what we wanted to be when we grew up, and everyone was, like, astronaut and firefighter.
And one kid in my class said a street shark.
And I was like.
I was like, oh my God, dude.
You're like, I want to be a biker mice from Mars.
Isn't it funny how an answer like that has a very, very strict cutoff on when it's acceptable?
Like, if you say that in first grade, I'm kind of like, all right, dude.
If you say that in like third, fourth, I'm like, oh, this, we got to put this kid in special class.
Maybe he met loan shark.
I don't know.
Yeah, yeah.
Card shark.
He's just sick at poker, you know?
And he's like, oh, sorry, sorry.
Sorry, I misspoke.
I misspoke.
Quick tangent.
It one time I was doing a sketchcom and I wrote a sketch about like how the street sharks are great.
But then afterwards there's always like construction workers going like these fucking sharks they've saving the day.
But they're ruined in the city.
Look at all this pavement.
They dragged up.
Jesus.
Because they surf through the streets.
Yeah, yeah.
Wait, is that what they did in that show?
Yeah.
You would see their fins go through like the pavement.
They would like cut through the street.
And I'm going, look at all that destruction.
There's a pop, leaving holes everywhere.
But the thing I've noticed, too, is like up in Connecticut, where my in-laws are, there's
so many more bears that are going into neighborhoods.
We've got coyotes coming into neighborhoods way more.
Like, there's a whole sort of decrepit in the middle of being renovated apartment building
in Hollywood that is completely taken over by coyotes.
So I think animals are just like, fuck it.
The humans are, they can sense that we're like destroying ourselves.
and they're like, we're coming back in.
We've gotten too soft.
Yeah.
We've gotten too soft as a society, dude.
No one's allowed to hunt anymore.
The animals know that we're weak and they're taken over.
They're coming after us.
Dude, okay, this is actually a great take because my two thoughts, like, really, my two
big picture thoughts on this were, what does it say about lions who feel like the other
really apex predator of land?
And I guess maybe it's like silverback gorillas, but lions that we kind, I mean, it's, it's
safaris, but like we kind of just like walk among lions and we're like, yeah, whatever.
And sharks are taking property back for me currently.
That's not fair.
Sharks are dominating right now and lions are bitches.
That is not a fair comparison, dude.
We're talking.
That's how it feels.
Yeah, but we're talking ocean and land here.
Like ocean is, that is the final frontier.
It's turf.
It ain't space, dude.
Ocean is, we can't see, we can't breathe.
That is like, we are.
We are outmatched down there.
I mean, good Lord.
I would also argue that, like, the feline nature of a, of a lion gives it a little bit more leeway to sort of, because it's a mammal.
But, like, you've seen people who have lions that are pets.
You can sort of train a lion to be, like, your friend.
You can't fucking train a shark to be your friend, dude.
There's no shark that's going to be your buddy.
You jump in, you're swimming laps with them.
Yeah, unless you're a James Bond villain.
Like, you're not holding on to a shark.
This is toothy.
He's three.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
Like, what the fuck?
Okay.
And then here's my second thing, though, and this is why I do want to fight back.
All the narrative is always like sharks are getting a bad rap.
They aren't mean.
They're not trying to bite.
They're not trying to kill humans.
Yeah.
They are just confused.
So what I read, though, is that they are dumb.
Like sharks are morons.
And literally are just coming up biting everything.
And then they're like, oh, sorry, I thought you were a seal.
Oh, and I'm like, I'm like, I'm.
a person, dude. I have fucking limbs, you moron. And if something that dangerous is that dumb,
that's the scariest combo on earth. Dangerous and dumb. So I will fight back against the dumb sharks
to take my beach back. That's how I currently feel. Listen, man, I wish you the best. Like,
I hope this goes well for you. You know, you should do. Well, he's not going to. They're going to kill me.
I agree. Yeah. Well, I guess the opposite of that would be like to make the sharks hyper-intelligent,
like the movie Deep Blue Sea where you're like trying to work out like how to stop Alzheimer's,
but then you end up with these like super smart sharks that figure out a way to kill you.
Dude, is that the plot of that movie?
Yeah, yeah.
They're like doing like.
Because it is fucking genius.
Like literally I now, I now have to go watch this movie.
Yeah, watch it tonight.
If they were just smarter, they wouldn't hurt us.
I'd go eat the seals, dude.
I don't know that.
They might, once a shark gets a taste for human blood.
Yeah, it's also one of those things where like everyone says, I always love when these
studies come out. And it's like, when your dog does this, it actually means this. And I'm like,
how the fuck do you know, dude? Or he's itching his ass. Like, can you, it's, every time I see these
reports that are like animals, and listen, I'm not discrediting all of these unbelievable scientists who
have worked their lives, spent their lives to understand animal behavior. But every now and then an
article comes out that's like definitively, when your dog is doing this, it means blank. And I'm like,
well, we, I don't know that we for sure know that.
So all these people that are like, oh, yeah, the sharks, whenever they attack a human,
they actually think you're a seal and they don't want to eat you at all.
I'm like this, well, I don't know.
Dude, maybe they are like, oh, I did think that was a seal, but I don't give a fuck that it's not.
I'm still going to eat this thing.
Yeah.
Like who gives this shit?
It bleeds and it has meat that I can eat.
Yeah.
It's kind of like, yeah, like what the hell are we talking about?
The other thing, Chris, would be maybe if you're saying that they can't see you,
they can't see the difference between a human.
to see, maybe what we need to do is start improving their eyesight. We need to start putting contact
lenses on the sharks. Dude, no, I'm thinking like big goggles. Like Nathan McKinnon, Nathan McKinnon
goggles. And then the sharks come around and they're like, oh, human, we're good. See, hey, good to have
have a nice wave, have a nice surf. And I'm like, thank you, shark. Nate Dog is so mad at you right now
that you brought up the goggles again. Like, he thought he escaped that. And actually, I think
now I think he's a shark debt. I think it helps him. If Nathan McKinin was smart, he would launch his own
brand of pool goggles and he would make a fortune.
Correct.
An absolute fortune.
Dude, before we get onto a beer league hotline here and close things out, since we're on
a nautical theme right now, I do have to bring this up.
Have you guys seen photos of Zuckerberg's yacht?
I don't think they have.
Do yourself as a favor while I'm talking right now and Google his yacht, but he just
set up shop.
I think he just docked in Seattle or something.
And all of these people who are enjoying their summer in Seattle, they're kayaking
around and hopefully not fishing.
They are taken photos and like people are truly like they're pulling their kaiops and
like their stand up paddle boards right outside the yacht and filming it and being like,
look at this fucking thing.
It is, it's the most preposterous thing I've ever seen.
It's like a carnival cruise ship.
It's unbelievable.
Like the bow of that ship, I'm calling it a ship, looks like Titanic.
Like it's actually a ship.
It's not a yacht.
It is a, I don't.
even understand what's happening. But this gal made this amazing video where she was kind of
breaking into, she was like, I'm a boat enthusiast, so I did some research on this thing.
It costs, first of all, that that yacht runs on diesel fuel. And it costs roughly 830 grand to fill
that yacht that take gas. That's impossible.
Why don't they send it through the straight of Hormuz
And it can actually get some more oil for us
Genuinely, what are we
What are we talking about?
Like just shy
A fucking ass hair shy of a million dollars
To just fill the tank
Of that
But the tank, you probably get a lot on the tank
Like I bet you don't have to refill that thing for a minute
Yeah, but even still
I'm like how long possibly
And I think some she also did some math
I think it's like
It costs like 90 grand a day
to like even operate or something like it's i don't know man these holy hell is that i mean that that
yacht is the grandest example of i am so filthy stupid rich that i have no idea what to do i have
no idea 300 million dollar yacht was what it costs that's how much it costs 300 million
I mean, Evan, does it say whatever you look, does it say like how many people fit on that thing or like how many?
I would imagine based on the look of that thing that it staffs upwards of a hundred people.
It's got it's got a hundred rooms and he has zero friends.
Dude, this article says Zuckerberg flexes yacht in Seattle while he fires meta staff.
I saw that too.
I think it was like 12,000 people from meta just got laid off and he's just like rolling.
up to Seattle and the yacht.
Filling his tank, dude, filling his tank with all of their yearly salaries.
Apparently it didn't, it didn't respond to a distress call for somebody around Seattle.
They, like, they were nearby.
There's also, it has an emergency companion vessel, I think, is what it's called.
It's like, so wherever it goes, there's another yacht that just follows it in case anything
happens to Zuck, I would imagine.
And I'm pretty sure, like, that vessel, like that vessel, like that.
That yacht is also a luxury yacht that costs like 30 million or something.
Yeah, yeah.
The fuck is.
I get out of my slightly less impressive yacht.
Dude, it's a ship.
Like, it's more than a football.
Like, if you're at a football field, it is literally bigger than the entire surface of the field.
Is it as big as fucking Titanic?
I'm not even joking.
It's, it's like, it's probably not much, it's probably not much smaller.
You do those, you do those size comparisons of a carnival cruise ship to Titanic.
Now Titanic looks like a dingy.
Dude, yeah, this picture blows on my mind.
So Titanic was 882 feet long.
So it's about half the size.
Yeah, this is about 400.
I mean, that is absurd, guys.
Mark Zuckerberg's personal yacht is half the size of Titanic.
Well, he's, but you remember, he wants this yacht so that he can, when the world ends and collapses,
he can take his yacht to New Zealand where he has the bunker.
But he could also live on this yacht.
For the rest of his time, for, you know, all the days.
That's Titanic and like a, I don't know what company, but like a modern cruise ship.
Yeah.
So, and think about how big I just said Titanic.
Isn't that nuts?
Isn't that crazy, dude?
That's, we have, we've talked about Titanic on this show so many times, I feel like.
And I love, it's our Roman Empire.
I feel like Titanic is Empty Netters Roman Empire.
Like, it always comes back to Titanic somehow.
I love Titanic.
That's awesome.
Oh, me too.
What could have been, Chris?
What could have been?
God.
Okay, Ev, let's get us into a beer league hotline.
Yes, please.
All right, here we go.
After having the early game, a bunch of us stayed for parking lot beers like we always do.
It's a great session.
Tons of laughs.
As we're wrapping up, one of the guys says it feels like we've been doing this a lot lately
because we've had a bunch of early games in a row.
Pretty lucky.
Someone else chimes in that he feels like we've been lucky the last couple of seasons.
more early games than late.
That's when a defenseman on our team confesses.
He's been paying our league commissioner under the table to give our team favorable time slots.
He works early mornings so the late games are tough for him.
And this was his solve.
Do we keep our mouth shut?
Or is the guilt too much bad karma?
Sorry, Dan is currently saluting the camera if you can't see this.
He loves it.
The corruption runs deep.
Dad.
He's still going.
Yeah.
That was a, that was a 21 gun salute.
That was long.
What, what a legend.
What a legend.
That this is hall, hall of fame beer league hotline stuff right here.
And when you started going, Evan, when you started reading, it was clear that it was
clear that it was leading, it was going somewhere. And I was like, oh, geez, here we go. And I'm sorry,
I'm sorry. I've been jaded by people's behavior in this world. I assumed we were going to hear a
story of this defenseman on our team is buddies with the commish. He works for the lead, something like
that. And it was just going to be true corruption. This fucking beautician is taking money out of his
wallet. Yes. His hard earned money, Dan, on his early shifts. He has no
connections. He has no inside track. He is just paying his hard-earned money at this job that he has to wake up
early for, which is very difficult for him and giving it to the commissioner to help out his entire team,
not just himself, and get these. I commend this gentleman. I commend this gentleman. And if I were
on an opposing team and I was like, yeah, we keep getting the late game. And I found out about this,
I would go like this. Credit to him, dude. If you, if you were getting favorable
treatment, bullshit. But if he's paying for it, good for him. You know what he's doing? He's doing what
others are not willing to do. And it sounds like they get the occasional late game to keep other people
off the scent. Yeah. Yeah. They get the occasional 1030. So everyone goes, no, they get their, it's just a
rotation. But, but little do they know, dude, the parking lot beers are flowing like, why? Because we have
the early game. This defenseman, he's a glue guy. He's a real glue guy on this team. He is.
Evan, he is a modern day glue guy Hall of Famer.
I don't even remember the question.
What was the question?
What did this guy ask?
Do we keep our mouth shut or do we, or is the guilt too much bad karma?
Well, no, absolutely zero bad karma here.
This man is a fucking, this guy is Mother Teresa.
This guy is Father Teddy.
Not to the other team.
This guy is Father Theodore and he is doing God's work for all of you.
But the problem is, as always with Beer League Hotline,
Cats out of the back.
Well, no, no.
I don't think it's correct enough that they would know.
You don't think other teams mistake.
You don't think that this beer league hotline comes out and someone is like this.
I play in a league where we always get the fucking late game and it feels like one team is always like this might have.
I don't know.
It's going to require a number crunching though because I think every single person in a beer league on earth right now is going,
this is us.
We always get the late game.
But I'm like, no, it just feels like you always get the late game.
You don't.
But it's going to require an actual data poll.
Which to your point might happen, but it's going to take some work.
Let's pray it doesn't happen.
The only way I would say that this is bad karma is, and we'd need more information.
But does this submitter feel that by getting mostly early games that they're winning more
because they're more refreshed and they're less stressed out and they're more able to do.
And have more bodies probably.
Yeah.
The body's thing.
The body's thing is a fair question.
I was going to say the being fresh thing I don't think counts because if you're playing
in the late game, everyone is, you know, it washes out, right?
Everyone's tired and everyone's, uh, but I guess, Dan, the other team has bought,
the team you're playing has bodies at 8.30, you know, so I'm like, yeah, so no, I think this is
fine. This is just good, clean payment. I really want to know based on probably the, the geography
of this team, how much is getting paid? Like, are we talking, are we talking 50 bucks? Are we
talking 200? Like what, like in that envelope that goes under the table at the diner, like how much
cash is in that envelope? I can't know that. Evan, you're so right. Like, I'm, I'm curious,
but I also can't know. Like, I don't want to know because if I find out it's a totally
reasonable number, I'm like, maybe I should start paying this. Yeah, if it's 50 bucks.
I have said so often, I would kill to know one time in my life.
what a Friday beer league feels like.
Because playing like an 8 o'clock beer league game on a Friday
and then having beers with the boys post game and then rolling that into like a night
out, I can't even fathom how fun that.
We had a Saturday, Dan, our first year in L.A.,
we played a full season for Sharks Cove in a Saturday night.
Is that true?
Yeah.
I don't remember that.
Well, Saturday is tough.
But like a Friday could be really special.
But listen, man, I think, again, this is Father Theodore.
This man is a genuine pioneer and a saint.
And I could not be more proud that Beer League hockey births heroes like this.
True heroes.
Chris, do you agree?
My only question, Evan, that you said you needed more data.
this is what the data I need, is the defenseman nasty? Because if he is, they are in an advantage
because now he can play more. Right. Like he can't really do the late games. So if he's sick and now
he's paying to get himself in the lineup and they're always winning because he's their best player.
I'm like, this actually is a little bit of corruption. I want another record. Yeah, but like,
yeah, the record with him and without him. Because if they get crushed every time without him,
I'm like, this is now unfair. That's such a garbage take by you. You're out here being like this. Oh, I want this
really good player to not be able to play that often because he has to play late games.
You are looking for a more favorable matchup, you bitch.
Of course.
You want to be the best.
I had to win.
You want to be the best to beat the best.
This guy's a hero.
He's a hero.
Yep.
Listen, the fact that he pays is legendary.
Absolutely legendary.
Yeah.
