It wasn't at all just how to make it to the NHL or how to like.
Denzel, how to make it to the NHL.
Ice is ready and we are back with another episode of the Empty Netters podcast.
And we've got another amazing interview for you.
Mario Ferraro of the San Jose Sharks, new alternate captain, might I add, joins the podcast.
And you've said this before and I think I agree.
Probably the most under the radar funny dude in the NHL.
He should.
I was about to say he should have my job because he would be better at this than I am.
But I was going to pitch we would switch jobs, but he's also better at hockey than me.
So I can't do either.
Yes.
He gets to do both.
It sucks when someone is better at you than you are, what you do.
Damn.
When he's already dope at something else.
I'm better at jury duty.
You were great at jury duty.
I came right from jury duty here.
Unbelievable stuff.
Well, we're going to kick it to this interview immediately so you guys don't miss anything with Mario.
One of the coolest guys in the game.
So much fun.
Sharks fans, you got a big season incoming,
and Marr is part of that.
So enjoy the interview right now.
We are joined today by a King City native,
a USHL first team all-star,
a UMass legend and member of the all-rooky team,
a world championship gold medalist,
the 49th overall pick in the 2017 draft,
and now assistant captain of the San Jose Sharks,
and the number one donkey in the hood, Mario Ferraro.
Welcome to the empty netters podcast.
Thanks, guys.
What an intro that was.
Legend at UMass.
I thought I'd hear that.
And that's a fact, dude.
Your name is still echoing in the halls at UMass, dude.
Everyone just is talking about you still.
Yeah, me.
That's who they're going for.
Not Cal McCall.
Cale's too mainstream, dude.
Kale's way too mainstream.
Yeah.
They remember that rookie year, dude.
They won't shut up about it.
It's all you.
Dude.
Every year, for sure.
So, not for a lack of trying,
because we just missed each other in Vegas,
but this is the first time
you and I have seen each other since
our first meeting in Vegas during
media tour.
And that lie detector
video with you was the fucking
funniest shit of all time.
Like, you were
making it impossible for me to do my job because you just kept making me laugh and that was the
moment I left that and I texted Laz and I was like I need to get Marr on the podcast immediately and he
was like oh yeah correct dude yeah that was actually hilarious it was funny until like you started
asking you some questions and then I was like am I going to be fucking told I'm lying or something
like I don't want to be telling him like I and I can sound like you said at one but you asked a couple
questions and you're like you got a little nervous there and I was yeah I didn't think the lady that
was doing it was gonna like throw me out of the bus or something I don't know what actually showed up on
her paperwork there it was really funny how many guys like came in and they were like it's a lie detector
test and they were like wait what the fuck people did not want to do it it was so good it was legit
like it was legit though hey oh yeah yeah she I mean like there I won't lie there were a couple not with you
actually there were a couple guys that I planted
a question and I was like no matter what they say,
no matter what it comes up as say they're lying
because it was just funnier. Like,
I was like, I'm going to ask
Tage if he thinks he has a better one T than a Vetchkin
and no matter what he says, say,
it's a lie. And like when that,
when he was like, no. And the woman was like, that's a lie.
He was like, what the fuck? No, I swear to God.
But it, like, this woman
was like worked for the FBI for like
10 years. So like that was all legit.
Like that was crazy.
It was good. And you did a good
like act like you were like really
straight face the whole time.
Yeah, I was trying to pull my best Bond villain vibe there, for sure.
Yeah, you dialed in.
Well, dude, we just got back from the draft in Vegas.
We got a lot of Vegas plugs here right now.
And obviously, great time.
Sphere was gas, but got us looking at your draft,
which was at the United Center in Chicago.
So wanted to hear a little bit about your stories from that draft
because you go in the second round,
but you've said multiple times,
you feel like you went a little higher than you expected.
And I want to know if you had any conversations or meetings with the sharks.
Did you feel like when they came up, you were like, I could go here or were you totally blindsided?
What was that experience like for you?
Yeah, I mean, well, it was obviously unreal.
Like I, like you said, like I did go a lot higher than I expected, so I was fired up.
Like as soon as they called my name, I was like, I didn't think I was going to go that early.
So I was like, great.
Last time in this chair and like my family was there.
So it was unreal.
But I had like, I didn't even know I was going to get invited.
to the combine, to the NHL Combine until like kind of last minute.
So I was like shocked to go there.
And then when I went to the Combine, I had probably like, I think 12 or 13 teams that I met
up with that I interview with.
Nice.
And San Jose was one of them.
But I thought that was like, you know, when you're like, when you're young and you're
going through those interviews, you're investigating every little question.
And I thought that was the worst one of all.
Wow.
Because like I would like, they had some like hard nose questions and Burkey was one of the guys
giving the interviews in there and he was like
really serious like I got giggles
out of some like I got some
people to laugh or whatever and like that's kind
of what I tried to do like put a smile on my
face and you know kind of see
if I can get them to lap but in San Jose
meeting like I felt like it was very like
stale yeah so I left them like as soon as I got that
I'm not getting jotted by I said like every like every team
I went through like I'm not getting jopped by that
so then when I'm at the draft like
I had my family there and I thought
like the projections kind of say
like I thought I think I was thinking like fourth round ish kind of and then yeah just they called my name
in the second round I was juice my agent was there with me which is obviously obviously he would be
there but my mom my dad my cousins came down so it was like it was really sick especially when I don't
think any of them really thought it was going to go that high not that they were like disrespecting me
yeah you're a bomb dude yeah they were like work on the work on the resume mar you're not getting
drafted at all bro
Yeah, like hopefully we'll get through this one before the fifth round or something.
No, like, they were like, they were fired out.
So it was good.
Did you guys, do you get buzz in at all that night?
Or like, what was the vibe?
You were in Chicago, you got drafted in the second round.
Did you guys fire it up or what happened?
To be honest, like, I, at that time, I was not, like, after it.
Like, I was still, like, pretty serious.
Not that I'm not serious now, but I like to let loose.
Like, I take, I can have a few beers now.
know what I mean?
But back then, like, at that time, I was like, I was a little more serious with everything.
And, like, my family did.
Yeah.
My dad had a few drinks.
My cousins were wasted.
I was, like, a little more serious because I had the development camp coming up.
And I was just like, I kind of, like, was motivated by that.
But my family was fired up.
They go, we went up to the suite, right?
He had a suite.
And Rich, he was there.
And Navi, Navakob.
Like, Enreach, comes.
comes up to my Italian family.
Like he's like all fired up, missing teeth.
Like he's juiced.
You'll look like this one day.
Yeah.
My nun, no, is there right?
Like he's just like, he's so fired up.
Grandmother.
So we call her grandmother.
Yeah, yeah.
No, no, Italian.
Yeah.
So he was like juice.
It was good.
Dude, that's amazing.
I feel we don't really ask everyone this question.
And I feel like you are a perfect person to give a very honest answer about it,
not to put you on the spot.
but after the obvious elation fades away when you get drafted there, especially in your circumstance,
you go a little bit higher than you thought, you have your whole family there.
Is there a moment where sort of the implication crashes over you of being like, all right,
holy shit, I just got drafted by the San Jose Sharks, a team with unbelievable history.
I got to keep playing my best so they know that this was a good draft pick.
And then eventually one day, hopefully I'm going to be playing for this team.
like what are all of those emotions that go through you when you kind of look down the road
at what getting drafted that high means for you and for that team,
your family and everything in between?
Yeah, it's obviously like, I think what really hit me like when when I'm going through
that moment is like I have a lot of people at home that like I don't really talk to how much
hockey with.
Like I go to high school with and stuff like that.
And they start to send me like clips or like videos that I'm watching a draft,
the sending congratulations.
it's like now they kind of see like oh shit like this guy's drafted now like he has
better chance to make it to the end it like now they're like this this can become an actual
thing right so like that's when i'm like kind of stunned at the whole thing like that this is pretty
cool and it's something like i was obviously very honored and thankful to be selected by san jose and
like as soon as i heard that too like being in california like i just like it was that wow
factor for me for sure so it made it actually made everything a little bit
bit more realistic, like making it to the NHL.
It just made it feel a lot more realistic for me because a couple of years ago,
years before that, I didn't have a scholarship yet.
I didn't make the Barry Colts and I was drafted in the 10th round.
Like, I didn't have, like, obviously I had things going for me.
I still felt confident, but like this was just a huge change over a couple years in
junior and it's just like now I have a much bigger opportunity.
And then when I went to camp is actually, it's weird because I say this,
I say this all the time and people are like, wow, it's crazy.
I went to camp and I'm like, I'm seeing all these guys, these other players that were selected.
And then I went to main camp even after I signed.
And I'm like, this is, I feel a little less confident of making it now.
Yeah.
Because I like, I get there and it's like, these are all the best players now, prospects from previous years, prospects from this year.
And it's like, now it's the competition even higher.
I'm like, I don't know.
I don't know if I don't know if I'll be able to do this in two years or whatever.
So that I went to college.
So it actually motivated me a little bit more to work even harder the moment I got drafted
and after I went to camp because then I'm like, okay, I got to step up and I got to do even more.
So I went to UMass for two years just with trying to get to another level.
So it was a weird change of emotion from feeling good and then feeling like, you know, I got a lot of work to do for sure.
Terrified.
Well, that's a perfect transition because I wanted to ask you about UMass.
And my first question, and sorry if you've said this already, I just couldn't find it.
How did you pick UMass?
Like, were you looking at other schools?
Do you have other offers?
Or how did you land on that in the first place?
Yeah, so after my first year with the Patriots in the OJ, I ended up committing to Western Michigan.
Sick.
And Ben Barr was like the scout that, you know, scouted me to make that happen.
And then after, after.
another year, yes, after another year in the OJ
with the Patriots, just before I was going to
go to Des Moines,
I decommitted from Western
Michigan and I went to UMass.
I just
found out that like Ben Barr
had left Western Michigan
and I actually
had a lot of faith in him
and I just decided myself
I'm like, I'm going to take my chances, I'm going to decommit
from here and then, you know,
I approached him with eagerness to
get to UMass. And it just so happens that
UMass was the perfect place to be.
So I didn't have many offers, to be honest.
It was literally, it was just Western Michigan to start.
And then I went straight from there.
I just decommitted and went to UMass.
So it was that that's literally the only two teams.
What a perfect time, right?
Because they were kind of right in the middle of that rebuild.
Like they won like five games before you got there.
And then you come in.
It's like you, Leonard comes in, Kale comes in.
You know, you guys come in together.
Las is there.
Right.
but you guys have that awesome first year
I mean you fucking dominate but then you
you know I think you made like the hockey's quarters that first year
lose to a good Northeastern team
but then the next year you're a fucking wagon
and like I think maybe BC caught you in hockey east
but you go to the Natty you have an apple in the fucking
epic Denver game in the Frozen Four
so like just talk to us about what that
I mean what that whole experience was like
but especially that end of year two
you know and that that whole run into the national championship
Yeah, it's actually crazy you see that because like it's weird because everything does happen for a reason and a little like in the smallest ways.
And it's like when I was thinking back, like it's like wow, like kind of you got it, you need a little luck too to happen.
And like I end up at UMass and you're right.
Like we were they were not good the year before.
So like I committed to a team that's in like 56 rank like not good.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And I felt bad for those like those guys the year before.
But it's crazy because we come in with 13 freshmen.
Obviously, one of them being Kiel and he said Leno, then Mitchell Chafee playing this year.
And like we had a lot of just like, just a lot of good character guys, but like hard no as players.
Yeah.
They knew, they all knew they were coming into a team that, you know, wasn't very good, which I think was also a good thing.
Because we had like character, like blue collar players on our team.
Like we weren't just all shine and like skill.
So these guys come in and it's like.
they had the best mix of guys from the veteran group before that were obviously very fucking humbled for being so bad right right like not in like like actually like good players but like you know like really great guys like laz obviously you guys know laz obviously you guys know lads like he's just like an awesome fun guy to be around like made it so fun there's a few others like McLaughlin like I think the list goes on but like we just had a good mix of core guys with like the new rookies that came in and
it was just a good environment.
Like it was just, it was a fun school.
Like, fuck, it was, it was so fun.
Like, I always say it, like,
if I could go back and play another two years,
like, I would.
Yeah, as fun, as fun as being in the NHL is,
I wouldn't change anything that's going on in my life.
But, like, college was fucking awesome.
Like, it was just a great experience with the guys.
And, like, it's just, you play less games.
And obviously, you know, that's an adjustment going to the NHL,
but, like, you playing less games,
a little less pressure and you can have a little more fun a little more fucking fun so it was good
like it was a really good experience and like the second year like it sucked losing in the hockey
east final or uh i think it was semi final yeah yeah yeah to bc which that sucked um especially
because i remember that game we were waiting for like an hour and a half that's the only thing i
hated about college like we were waiting so long for that game to end before us to go yeah it's so
And overtime and like, we're like nervous.
Like, you know, it's the garden.
Like we're just, whatever.
No excuses.
But that just, that blew.
But then obviously being able to make it to the championship final, the Natty Chip, that was sick.
Dude.
So I love to hear that you had such a great experience.
Because for those, for any of the listeners who aren't familiar with New England, the zoo is a real place.
Like, it's a fun, fun area.
You know, there's some schools in the area like Amherst College.
and if you want to have a good time, you go to UMass to party.
So I love that you had a great time there.
But, you know, that is a hockey school.
And I want to hear from you about what the sort of environment and the energy on campus was like when that shift happened.
Like you said, you went in and you guys had a pretty low rank.
And then all of a sudden, that class comes in, you guys are a wagon, you're playing for hockey's titles, you're playing for national championships.
could you feel the energy on campus shift as you guys were getting better and better and better
and what was that like as a player and a student?
I'll add, dude, before you answer, especially going into year two.
Did you guys after that first year were you like, yo, we are about to be so fucking dope?
Or did that even surprise you guys?
Oh yeah.
It was like, it was so like, so pretty much like you say, it's a party school, right?
It is.
It's a party school.
Yeah.
But at the same time, it's a hockey school.
So when you do well, they just all the students bring the party.
to the Mullen Center.
Like we all come through.
Like our student section
was loaded.
It was rammed on game nights.
And like that was like the best part.
Because that second year when we're coming in,
it's like we knew like we were walking like a little bit more of a chip on our shoulder.
Like big dicks.
Yeah.
Like had a better year last year.
And then we come in at the Mullen Center and it's just like opening night is like way more packed than it was the night before.
It's like that's kind of it was just that was.
what motivated us even more.
And then, like, you have, obviously, like, being at UMass and that's so many other great
things.
Like, like, as, as we are starting to do very well, people start to notice us more and all
that stuff, which is, it's, it's, it's cool.
Like, you think about being on a pro team and how cities, like, people in cities will
notice you and, like, you know, like guys in Gossomath, he's in McDavid, can't walk
around Edmonton or Toronto, you know what I mean?
So, like, that's kind of how it wasn't to that extent, but it was cool being at UMass for,
us not being in pro to kind of experience like oh we're walking around like the dining halls
and class and like people are saying hi and whatever it's it's it's a good it was a good feeling
like it had a good balance of everything and like our coach carvel like he kept us in line
like we were never we were never out of hand that's the thing with our group like we had a
bunch of guys that were motivated to win and to do very well and get to the next level um obviously
seeing the guys and where they're at now,
that it was like we never had to worry about people taking advantage of going out
and being hung over for a game on Friday.
You know what I mean?
Like we never had to worry about that.
We were always dialed in.
We were always ready to go and like that's what made us good.
And that's what makes it even more enjoyable to like be there when you're playing.
Because like then it's like you earn that Saturday night and it's like you just let loose
and ever do that.
Hell yeah.
So you guys get on this great and you specifically this great trajectory of
of, you know, more and more success is happening.
2021 comes around and bang, you make the World Junior Squad,
which is so fucking sick, first of all, in general.
We're such huge fans of, like, guys playing for your nation,
the amazing feeling that that is.
But specifically for you, you didn't make it after freshman year,
then you make it the next year, has to feel amazing.
But you then go to Latvia,
want to hear all about that experience,
and you get in first game, game one, you get pumped,
by Latvia 2-0.
Obviously, we know what happened in that world
juniors. You get the gold medal.
The world championship. Yeah, world championship, sorry.
And after that first game,
are you like, oh, fuck,
we're like, we're not, we don't have the juice
this year or this tournament. Like, what
was going through your head after that first game?
Yeah, so,
World Championships, I fucking loved it.
It was awesome. Like, it was cool, but I'm a little,
like, it was also during COVID, so I'm a little
rattle because I wish it was like
not at that time so we can have even more
fun but
regardless the way it ended up
was unreal but I won't lie to you
when we were in that mix of things
like we lose we lost a
Latvia and then we lost two games after that
yeah you guys went three three and one
in the group stage
I think it's like one of the worst that Canada's ever done
in in the round robin
yeah and for me like
from for me and like a lot of the guys
guys in there like two shit seasons in San Jose.
Yep.
I come here at Team Canada, like, I'm like, we're going to be fucking buzzin.
Let's go.
Like, I'm excited for an opportunity to get back on like a winning.
Like, let's go.
And I'm like, am I the fucking problem here?
Yeah.
You know, like 0 and 3.
I'm like, is there something?
Like, what the fuck is going on?
Like, I was like, this sucks.
Yeah.
But like the morale in the room never changed, like,
throughout the whole tournament.
Like we actually had a really,
like,
I don't know if that's,
I'm not too familiar with,
you know,
team Canada team.
Like,
that's the only team Canada team I was on.
Like,
the world juniors,
I made it to the camp,
but I never made the team.
Right.
I made it to the camp
after that first year.
So, like,
I don't know if that's how it always is.
Like, guys get,
like, bond really well.
Like,
but we had a really good group.
And Galant,
our coach was like,
he kept this together throughout it all,
like didn't panic.
You know,
we played cards together.
We still,
drank beers together.
Like it was great.
And then we just started winning.
And then we saw an opportunity later in the tournament.
But I was embarrassed at first.
I was because I had a group chat on on, I'm in like a group chat with some of my like cousins and like buddies for around town.
And they play in a men's league.
So sometimes I'll go all like I'll play in their men's league.
But they keep they chat all year and I'm in this group chat.
And I see, I don't know why I'm in it.
But I see all like leaves combos.
The leaves this.
The leaves that.
Oh, they're brutal.
All they're playing.
good like all this BS and then I just
like they're texting I don't know if they remember
I was in it. Yeah I was saying about
I don't think they knew I was in
on Team Canada. They're like oh team can't
Team Canada what a joke
0 and 3 this and that
I was so fucking rattled
but then when we won
Did you chime in?
I didn't chime in
Oh Mark come on you gotta fucking rub
their nose in that like you should
right after the gold medal you should have sent a selfie yourself
with the gold and been like this how about those
Leaves Comparisons now, you fuckers.

Like, no, I told my cousin, I was like, because one of the guys surfing, like, I told him, I was like,
tell us, hey, shove this metal up his fucking ass.
Yeah, there you go do that.
Like, you know, because, like, I, I knew the guy, like, but I don't know them too well.
So I didn't want to, like, step in and be a dickhead, but also they were fucking, because I know that he would probably feel bad.
His fucking tail would go between his life.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
If I said, you know what I mean?
But still, like, I was, I was just, it was, I was so happy to rub it in their face and then just, like, a gold.
like it was so cool like you never know like you never know when you're going to get an opportunity like that again like
it's especially like you know no disrespect to other you know countries and and and and whatnot but canada's
always had like a pretty good team so it is it's it's kind of you know it be tough to to be on like a
you know team for your country um so it just it was cool to to be able to experience that and
yeah i really no doubt man do we know was that she loves in that
Oh, shit.
I bet it was.
In that first game against Lafayah, I bet that was she loves.
We'll have our producer look that up, but that would be a funny...
And, and Marr, I was going to say the playoff run, the elimination run you had was sick,
because it was like, it was like Russia.
U.S. Finland.
You went through the gauntlet to get that gold.
Yeah, like, and that year especially, like, every team was like pretty even.
Because like a lot of guys, like, during, during,
like the COVID, there wasn't a lot of guys
either said no or this and that.
Like, because families, like, you couldn't really
bring your families and all.
So that's another reason why I say, like, I'm very,
like I feel really fortunate and lucky to be able to be in that
position because a lot of guys did turn down going and stuff like that.
So it's like every team was pretty good though.
Like it was, it was a good competitive tournament.
So like it was, we definitely did go on a run.
We won an overtime twice.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah.
And dude, like you said, to wear,
that sweater and have that medal, like, where does that, that's got a rank super high in
your all-time career hockey memories, right?
Oh, yeah, for sure.
Like, I was, especially, like, with the way, like, the past few seasons have gone, like,
I've always kind of been in a competitive position.
So, like, that really felt so good to be a part of.
And I, it's obviously a dream to be able to wear the Canadian jersey.
Like, that was just, like, it was, it was surreal.
It was surreal for me.
I don't care if it was cold, but I don't care if it was like,
barely anybody in the stands.
It doesn't matter.
It's gold metal, baby. It was really cool.
Yeah, gold metal is a gold medal.
It's still just as heavy.
It's the same thing.
Yeah, I can still use it as a couple, as a coaster.
Yeah.
Pause on the podcast real quick to talk to you guys about cash app.
If you're not living under a rock, you've heard of cash app.
It is, without a doubt, the best app in the game when it comes to sending and receiving money.
And the reason is because cash app is taking care of.
of your savings with Cash App savings.
So when you get this money in your Cash App account,
you're settling up tabs, maybe you're going Habsies
with a buddy on something.

Dude, okay so I wanted to talk to you
About motivation in general
Because you touched on this a second ago
With the World Junior thing
And I saw you talking to Laz about this
Which I love, this is why I'm asking
That it's like after that happens
And you don't make the World Junior Squad
It's like you come back
And you are just on your grind
And you've said this a couple times already
In this interview how hard you work
After the draft, right?
You're thinking about minicamp
You know you're a beast in the gym
You're posting
and you're doing the fucking push up, sit up, body squat, cycle, dude, bang, right?
Like you're posting videos and all that stuff.
And I was dying when you said to Laz that you start getting into the fucking Denzel, Will Smith, motivational speeches, dude.
So I got to know, dude, what speeches are we listening to to get you fired up?
So I was like, yeah, I was listening.
I always like, I usually go through these phases where I'll listen to these.
I like the speeches because it's like the way they talk and the things that they say like they're really good at like communicating.
I don't know.
It's like with the music in the background just gets me fired up.
So I was listening to like I was listening to all those like the act.
A lot of actors like have these videos on on YouTube.
So like it like Dwayne Johnson, Will Smith.
You said Denzel right.
Yeah.
Yeah.
He has like a long.
I can see I can remember his whole this whole thing now.
I've listened to it so many times.
Another one, Matthew McConaughey.
Oh, yeah.
Big person that I listen to a lot of his stuff.
I even listened to, I don't know, this guy's not an athlete, he wasn't an athlete,
but his name is Les Brown.
Oh, yeah.
I listen to him a lot.
Who's that?
He's really, he's really good.
He's like a motivational speaker.
Is he the guy?
Is he the guy I've heard before?
I don't think so.
His name's Eric, I think.
Okay, okay.
So yeah, keep going.
So wait, Marl, a lot of these aren't like, they're not speeches
from movies, these are just guys talk, like giving speeches?
Yes, like pretty much like life advice.
Yeah.
Like they're pretty much their way of like working to get to where they are.
Like their mindset, how they viewed life and what's important to them or like how just advice on how you should go about life.
Yeah.
And it wasn't necessarily about how to, it wasn't at all just how to make it to the NHL or how to like.
Denzel, how to make it to the NHL.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It wasn't even like how to make money.
Like it wasn't,
it was just like motivation.
So that's why I love that Les Brown is because his is just like,
I don't know.
If you listen to his stuff like he's like he,
his job is actually a motivational speaker.
Like that's what he got.
Like he's,
he's a communicator.
Like so his,
his like the way he speaks is like it just flows.
Yeah.
Like he doesn't,
he's just very,
he can grab your attention.
Like it just some people are interested in that.
Some people aren't for me.
Like really caught me.
So I was listening to a lot of that.
for sure. It got me fired up. And it just like motivated me to kind of get into that rhythm and create my own little story.
Because they talk about what they did. Yep. They talk about what they did in those motivational videos like how they were waking up early, how they were doing this and that. And so like that kind of like made me like I want to be in their position to talk about this where people are like, let's hear what Ferraro is did or how did Ferraro get to where he is. Yeah. So that kind of changed my mindset a little bit. So yeah. I went to that year.
like kind of being crazy with it, I think.
Not to an efficient way.
Not in an efficient way.
Because I got to remember, like, these guys are actors that I was listening to.
So they're working out once a day.
I'm going to work out three times today.
My job is to work out.
Like it doesn't make it still like, it wasn't very smart.
And I actually didn't even have my better.
Like that second year, I'd really even play that good.
Yeah, it was a disaster, actually.
This is a great speech all to say people listening, don't do this.
Oh, God.
No, but then I signed.
I signed out that second UMass year, and I didn't think I deserved it.
Yeah.
So it's like, you know what?
Maybe other, maybe I wasn't so bad.
Like, I didn't play bad.
So I'm over exaggerating.
But maybe I was better than I thought.
Yeah.
Like, things happened for a reason.
Like, I dug deep.
And it just so happened.
Like, the year before at UMass, yeah, I put up more points.
But when I went to San Jose, my job wasn't to put up points.
So in the second year at UMass, I was in more of a defensive role.
And it actually helped me because when I went to San Jose.
San Jose, the first thing said is, we don't need you for your offense.
Yeah.
So it actually turned out to be the better scenario for me, because I didn't go into
UMass, like, it wasn't, I wasn't going to be a 40-point guy anyway in the NHL,
like, Kail McCar was his first year, you know?
So, like, it didn't matter to me.
Like, it was more important what I did that second year was more valuable and getting
me prepared for San Jose.
Hell yeah, man.
There's something really special about Marr listening to speeches about improving yourself
while improving himself.
Like it's really,
like the fact that you're doing that in the gym
it's like a beautiful combination of psycho shit
and also truly incredible.
I love it.
I love it so much.
I want to take you away from the ice for a second
and talk about some of the other things that you're into.
You've recently got super into camping.
In fact, for the listeners,
as we were talking about you coming on the pod,
we bounced around the idea of going on a camping trip
that we would do like a podcast with a camping trip,
which we still should do, by the way.
I'd come and meet you.
Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
That would be dirty.
You've hit Utah recently,
hitting the national parks,
you've been all over,
and you're getting into it more and more and more,
and I want to know how did this start,
and what is it about camping that you find so fun, relaxing,
and just a great thing to do,
especially during the off season.
So I've always, like, I've camped growing up,
like it wasn't obviously my parents would take me and my sister's camping and we go on like a
day we have a lot of family friends that would join us and we go camp in in northern Ontario so we
we we kind of I kind of got you know some enjoyment of that when I was a kid but recently being
in in California like on the west coast like you see all of this like all the great views and
the places to see are just they're unbelievable oh yeah when I was there I saw like when I was
my first year, Bernsey actually used to come to the rink in his Ford Raptor, and he would have
a massive, like, thing on top of his truck.
And so I was asking him about it.
And it's actually a tent that comes down from the truck.
So Bernsey kind of got me into, like, what he was using, like, right?
Like, like, the tent and stuff like that, like, his kind of way of, like, camping.
Because he was also, he also had, like, RVs and he would do drives back and forth to Toronto.
So, like, he was, like, kind of, he was camping, but also into that, like, being mobile and
and just living on the road kind of thing.
You know what I mean?
Yeah, yeah, he's different.
He's a rubber.
He's a rubber, not a leather.
Yeah.
That's what they say.
Yeah.
So he kind of, I mean, and then, and then when I was looking for a car, so I drove a Kia
my first couple years.
And the boys always chirred me.
You got, like, Carl, you got to get a new car.
You got to get a new car.
What is that?
What is that?
Yeah.
Like one year, one, one summer I parked.
my Kia under these pine trees
in Toronto and it got sap
all over the car
dried
sap dried to the car
and I never
because it's so hard to get that out
Oh my God dude
it's nearly impossible
Like you gotta get a detail
and I was like I'm not getting a detail
So I just drove around with it all here
and Carl's like what the fuck is this
you know like so
you're like Mario you can't valet it
Yeah you're like Carl
Buy me one fuck face
Like Jesus Christ
Yeah seriously
around this Ferrari. Anyway, so I was, so I was like, okay, I'm going to get a new time for a new car.
I gave in that key. I actually got great money for it. I got like 11 grand. I only paid like 16
for it. So it was like perfect. I got almost easy. Yeah. But then I went to go, but then I went
to go buy a four runner. And the boys are like, holy fuck, no much better. Yeah.
But I, but I loved it because I like actually my, my, my, uh, my girlfriend, uh, was kind of
motivating me to get a forerner. She's like, you should get a
four-runner. Like, those are pretty cool. She drove a Jeep.
I was like, okay, you know what? I'm going to look it up.
Because at first I was like, I don't know. You see them everywhere or whatever.
But then I looked it up and the modifications that you can do on those things are crazy.
Oh, yeah, it's nuts. You can really trick those things out.
Wild. So I got, so I bought it. I bought the forer in 2021.
And I just put so much work into it.
Like a crazy amount of work where I could have bought Mercedes and a nicer car.
But I decked it out with like these bump.
on the front back.
I put a rooftop tent on it,
just like Burnsy had on his,
on his truck.
Six.
I put like,
I went like the Escher Mile.
I had like,
I have like,
I currently had like gas tank and water tank on the side.
I have like these,
these match tracks,
which is like if you get stuck,
like if you're offroading,
you get stuck in sand and dirt,
you can put them under the tires help you get out.
I put like,
I put a lift on it,
suspension and tires.
So all that stuff.
Lights like jacked it up.
So now every summer like I've been trying to get into like I want to put it to
to use.
because it's so hard to use it during the year,
like I can't go anywhere.
So in the summer,
I do, like, a three-week trip with McKenna.
And we, like, last summer, we went,
we always come down south.
We come to you guys in L.A.
Yeah.
And, uh, because we just, we love it.
She went to school there.
So last summer we came down south again.
Saw Malibu.
We went to Santa Barbara.
We went to, uh, San Clemente Beach,
like just kind of by Laguna, like,
yeah, in the North, like, in the North.
Went to Utah.
We, we did like, sort of the Midwest.
Utah has so much to see Zion National Party like crazy amount.
Oh yeah.
So then this year, this year it's like we're going to do the same thing, but instead we're
going to go up the West Coast because there's a lot that we didn't see.
Like I didn't see Yosemite.
So this year we did Yosemite.
I did Pizmo Beach where I actually got to drive my car off road, which was sick.
So I was able to like actually go dune riding with my phone.
I almost tipped it.
I almost tipped it a couple times.
Like I was going.
I had some sick like drive like and you can.
camped on the beach. It was so
sick. I love California. Anyway. That's money.
It was so
it was so sick, yeah.
Dude, you've said before that Bernsey is
actually a bit of a glamper. So do you
think that you have the leg up on him now in camping?
Like, is he actually a fraud? He's just
out here doing it the bougie way?
I always give, I've
been giving him shit like not even, I don't even know
I've given him shit about that. I haven't seen
seen the guy person a little bit since we
well, since we played this year, we'll ever dinner with him.
But like, he's probably like,
if he sees it.
But no, I give him shit, but he's, he's, he's got three kids now and stuff.
So he's like, like, he can't camp the same way.
But I just joke around because he's got a massive RV, which isn't camping.
He's got a kitchen, a living room.
It's a house that house is a free of my place in San Jose.
Yeah, I was going to say it's better than my place.
It's better than most of the guys that are renting a place in San Jose.
So it's like he he he's so that's why I give him shit
But like he's it's luxury now for him
It's sick it's sick what he has
Have you been to the
The fucking Jurassic Park Zoo that he calls a home
I'm so mad but I haven't
I haven't been I'm so mad
Because he's invited
He's invited me a few times
And I just like it just wasn't right time
I just couldn't make it
Yeah
But I really want to go there at some point
Well now you're never getting invited now bro
You've just been fucking suering him
Yeah true
That invite is over
I'm going to be sleeping with the giraffe.
Yeah.
Dude, I imagine there's like a waiver you have to sign when you go to Burns Farm.
And it's like, because he's hunting you.
Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
Like you get in there and there's more there than you could have ever imagined.
It's unbelievable.
His kids know more about what to do out there than I would.
Oh.
His kid is, his son Jaggers involved, like he's such a beauty.
Like he's like a little Bernsey.
That's awesome.
They're all good kids.
Marr, does
does McKenna actually love camping or does she just love you
and puts up for it?
I think she loves camping,
likes me.
It tolerates Marr.
He's the only one she knows who has a tent on his fucking roof.
So she's like,
I guess we'll get married because I need the tent.
There's enough room in here.
Yeah.
That's awesome.
She loves it.
She's actually like one of the people that got me into it.
She actually used to own a bus.
Like she bought a bus that was like,
Yeah, like a bus, because she, I don't know if I told you, but she went to school at Pepperdine.
She's in Malibu.
So she actually bought a bus and like it had a kitchen on the inside and had like a bed and stuff like that.
So it was kind of like built up to be this travel and like sleep on the road and like destination vehicle.
Then whatever, it broke down.
Yeah, yeah.
So but.
Dude, I get it.
It's money.
I've told this story on the pod before, but there was.
was a TV show on Nickelodeon when I was a kid called the Wild Thornberries.
And they had this, you know it?
No, I don't.
Yeah, I was going to say, I think it might be a little before your time.
But I'll send you a picture of it after this.
But it was like this family that like traveled all around the world.
And like they were like safari family.
And they had this ridiculous RV that had like yellow and black zebra stripes on it.
And when I was in college, me and a bunch of our boys bought this old shitty 1980s
RV and we painted it like that and gutted it and put like bunk beds and Nintendo 64 and all the
shit in there and we would just like rip around all the parks in New England like Mount Washington
and shit like that and it was the fucking best time ever so it's very that sounds unreal it was sick
I'll send you a picture of the of the RV the thing was fucking money it was so cool yeah that sounds
so sick that be something that I'd be part because like we were even in our our trip like we
were going, we went to go look at air streams.
Yeah.
Like that's,
that's nothing like what you were doing because those are more like, I kind of like
like the idea of how you were taking something that was like older and making it sick,
like turning it into something sick.
But air streams are, I think, are so dope.
Actually, like we stayed in a couple Airbnbs.
Dude, in Malibu.
Yes.
That's actually where I.
That whole property is so awesome.
Like there's just like air streams everywhere on this like beautiful grassy hill
looking over the Pacific Ocean.
It's fucking nuts.
It's so sick.
So ours, there was only one.
So it could be a few now.
There used to be like,
there's only like one air stream
and there was like a generator up there.
Yeah.
But it was so high up in the hills,
so quiet and you could just look over the ocean.
It was sick.
Is that what you're about to say?
Yes.
So I was going to say yes.
No way, dude.
That's right.
That's right.
That's awesome, dude.
They're in the airstream and Mars like,
this is where we're going to live
for the rest of our lives.
It's all the forward.
It's actually so much.
I was so chilling there.
It's actually so funny because
before I asked
Kenna, she had no idea
because she said
like one thing she said is like you were,
I was butt ass naked, sleeping,
taking a nap in this airstream.
An hour later, I'm dressed up.
We're about to like go to dinner
and I asked her maybe, but an hour
before that I'm naked taking a nap.
She's like, you weren't nervous at all.
Like you're just sleeping.
Where was the ring, dude? Up your ass?
God damn it, dude.
Yeah.
McKenna's like, I gotta start making you feel the pressure a little bit more.
You were way too comfortable coming into this thing.
Yeah, I was loving it.
Oh, that's beautiful.
Dude, the other, and everybody that knows you knows your other hobby is your YouTube page.
And, you know, you've told some fucking hilarious stories of jumbo and some of the boys, like,
seeing your videos and everything.
And there's a ton of stuff now.
There's like hockey stuff and you've got workouts on there.
the beginning it really was like reviewing tech you know and my first question dude is how did you
because bro we do this now like it's kind of hard to put yourself out there and be like all right
i'm going to make a video my face on camera on the internet forever so how did you even get over
that hump to start to start making youngest of the plugs yeah it was it is hard like i i kind
I feel bad because I feel like
shitty when people talk about it now
because I haven't been uploading as much
until I'm like like like
it's like during the year it's like hard to upload
and then now I'm honestly like I had my fun
in the summer so and I kind of don't want to just throw
it something shitty and like just put together
and now I'm training so hard so I feel like
it kind of sucks because I wish I was posting more
but anyways like a lot of at the beginning
a lot of it was like certain guys
I don't know if they were doing it to kind of
laugh at me or make fun of me
but they're like oh we love it maryl do it
i remember like jake goddette like one of my teammates at you mass
was like i'll be your manager like this and that like he's like post it post of this
but it was hard to post videos because you're like kind of in the hot
in the hockey world you're gonna get shirt totally yeah yeah yeah but now like i was
just like you know i had the pocket like i just did especially going to the sharks i was like
oh fuck when you see this they're gonna blow me up they're gonna blow me up and and i
I was just like, I was just like, fuck it.
Because I, I, I chirped too.
So now I'm just like, you know what, both chirp, both chirp and back.
It is what it is.
And I was just, I was just doing my thing.
But then, like, a couple of videos started to go, like, in college.
Yeah.
When I was doing, I told last this last week, like, when I was made a couple tech videos that have like 25,000,
views, I was like, what the fuck?
Yeah.
So now, so that's the kind of, I was, that's what made me think, like, can this actually
be a thing?
Like, can I actually, like, maybe go, like, get something going here?
Like, maybe I had something else to what I'm doing with how.
And then it's just, it's just change over the years.
Because as much as I love, like, I love doing it.
Like, I like making the videos.
I just love hockey more.
Yeah.
Like hockey's just my passion.
That's where it is.
So like, anytime the hockey comes up, which is every day, I don't have time for it.
So it's like now it's just like kind of fizzling out.
But I love that people were literally making decisions to buy shit based on your review.
Yes.
Lots of it.
That is a real thing that has them.
But it's also, man, it's like you have no idea.
and I mean this so genuinely that like Chris said, it's, you know, it's hard to put yourself out there.
It's hard.
It's not something that you just do.
And the fact that you have in your mind just now, like you said, you don't want to just put something shitty out there.
You put a lot of thought and a lot of effort into it.
And how evident it is that you have been on camera before, you've done something like this to prepare and put out the best quality, it shows up every time that you do an interview, every time that you're on camera.
and you're going to be surprised how valuable that is in your life throughout your career and especially after
because like it is so obvious.
It truly every time you do something like this, we're like, yep, he knows what he's doing.
I appreciate you saying that because like a lot of it is really just kind of trying to be yourself.
And when you can be in front of camera, it's harder than you think.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Kind of just be yourself.
So I appreciate you saying that for sure because it is something that, you know, I do take a lot of pride
and being someone who can, you know, talk to the media and kind of do that sort of thing,
like having that image of, you know, being kind to the media and being outgoing in that way.
So thank you for that.
But yeah, it's definitely something that, you know, you get better as you do it.
And I feel like over the years, like it's kind of been more of a who gives, who cares what people kind of think.
And then it ends up working out for you because you look better when you're just being yourself.
100%.
Exactly, dude.
100%.
What's one of your favorite things?
things you ever reviewed. What's one of your favorite tech gadgets? I think, well, like the one that
blew up for me was the MacBook Air. I did a, I did a review on a MacBook Air. And I love that thing.
It was so good. Got me through college. Like, I loved it. And I had like, I was, like, I told us to last,
but like, like I said, like there was 35,000 views. But I almost feel like I, I was so inspired by
some of these tech YouTubers that were making videos. Yeah. Because they were,
They had like a million subscribers at the time.
Like Marquez Brownlee, Unboxed Therapy, who actually Unbox Therapy, he's Canadian.
He's from Toronto.
And he has like 24 million subs now.
And I was watching when he had like a million.
God, that's crazy.
So like now, like it was so, it's so cool.
Like it was actually inspiring.
So I was like kind of like similar to when I'm listening to those motivational videos.
And I'm doing the workout at the same time.
It's like I'm looking at these guys and I'm like, I'm kind of inspired by what they're doing.
And I love tech.
I love Apple.
I kind of want to try and start to review some stuff on my own.
Yeah.
I learned pretty quickly that, like, I don't actually have the knowledge deep within.
Like, I don't actually have the research on what's running these MacBooks,
what the actual numbers and specs are to be able to do it.
It's like if somebody who likes hockey, they're just going to try and make it to the NHS.
No, like, you've got to actually work out of it.
You got to actually study it.
So that kind of kicked into me real quick because I had, like, comments on the,
the video saying, oh, I have this and
this doesn't work like you said
it did or, you know, like
mine is, or
like mine doesn't, the battery life is terrible
just seem like all this like little stuff that
like they're kind of complaining and chirping, but
other people were like, oh, we like this thing.
Yeah.
So they would buy used one like
because it was an old one. It was like 2016
I think or something like that.
So like go buy you on it like sick.
That's fucking awesome. Yeah, yeah. Good luck, good luck.
Where did donkeys in the hood come from?
Was that totally random?
It's
It's funny you say that
Because I actually like
I was like should I make a YouTube video today
Like a couple days ago
Like should I make a YouTube video
I was saying it to myself
And I just like
I go what it's good all you donkeys in the hood
And McKenna's in the kitchen
She's like no
She's like no
She's like no
I was like maybe I should kind of change
Like the name is okay
Young is a plugs is fine
But the intro maybe I should kind of do
But no, that was like, so I had three older sisters.
I was young when I thought of that.
So I had three older sisters and I was like, I'm the youngest of them.
Yeah.
So I'm like youngest of plugs because like plugs like hockey.
Yeah, yeah.
Throw it out left, right and center.
But I was like, why should I come up with this?
I actually learned it because when I was watching, do you guys know who Faze is?
Oh yeah.
Like Faze.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So I used to watch like their video steady.
And when they were like living at the house in New York together.
So like Fays Banks and all those guys actually.
she had like an intro.
Like they would say something like,
what's going on?
You squid freaks?
Like something weird.
You know what I mean?
So I was like,
oh,
maybe I should have something like that
that'll maybe trickle in people's minds
and think of all the video.
So that's kind of where mine came from.
Maybe not the greatest intro.
It's amazing.
I mean,
I love it.
It's memorable.
We wanted to say it.
It's fucking fantastic.
Before we get into some last fun stuff,
I do want to touch just for all your fans.
on the sharks really quick.
I think you've got such a cool trajectory and sort of roller coaster.
And going from your early days of junior into UMass,
guys starting low, the team starting low, getting high again.
Your first couple of years of the sharks, obviously not where you wanted it to be.
Like you guys, your win percentage has been the lowest of your career.
And all of a sudden, things in San Jose look pretty amazing.
They look pretty promising.
And it's really cool that you guys are likely at.
and Will Smith and Macklin Celebrini coming up here.
You got Wenberg coming in.
You got our boy, Tyler Toffey coming in, who you're going to love, by the way.
Toph is the fucking best.
And everyone who is a Sharks fan, like, dude, we do these hockey talk things on Sunday.
Every Sharks fan that slides into the DMs, like, can we make playoffs?
Can we make playoffs?
Like the vibes are so high.
What does it feel like being one of the captains of this team, the team that you were drafted
by, you've been with your whole career, and all of a sudden you can feel the energy shifting,
almost like at UMass when you felt the energy shifting.
How cool does it feel right now?
And what goes through your head as you've been this very motivated guy,
your whole career, you use that as you prepare.
What does that added element feel like right now?
I'm super fired up.
Like I'm just as fired up as all these fans seem to be like,
I think a lot of guys in our room are really hungry.
Because at the end of the day, like,
when you're on a team that's struggling,
it's it's it's it's a motivation for for you to you know win as a team but it's also as an individual like it doesn't look good on you when you're when you're struggling on a team like no individual is going to look good like you know for example like i know we joked around about this on lads this podcast but like plus minus like you know players aren't like i'm a defensive defenseman i'm a defensive defenseman like i want to have a good plus minus like it's like your numbers you know aren't the the important thing it's a team success but your team success will help you look better than an individual and have you
better numbers and like play better and make more money and have a successful career.
So like I'm really fucking motivated to have a good year.
I think that a lot of guys in our room are super pumped up.
I always feel good at the beginning of every year.
I don't, I know we made a lot of good, good changes this year.
Like we got a lot of good, you know, promising players coming up.
Obviously, some that you mentioned.
But I always feel confident on a clean slate, zero zero start.
Like I'm really, I'm always really excited.
so it's just this adds on to that that confidence
and believing that we can be, you know, even better.
And are we going to make the playoffs?
I don't know. I can't see the future.
But, you know, we're going to be, we're going to be there.
We're going to be right in the mix.
Because, like, you know, that's the only thing.
That's all we want.
Like, that's all we want.
That's all we think about as, you know,
the first thing that comes to mind when we put our skates on is, like,
we want to win.
Like, otherwise, like, what do we do in this for, right?
So it's, that's the most important thing for us.
And I think that, you know, we got a lot of guys in the room, like you said, I'm going to love to Foley.
I have no doubt about that.
I have no doubt that I'm going to love every guy that steps in that locker room because I just think it's going to be a great culture this year.
And that's what I think it's going to take the win.
So I'm really pumped up for every new guy that's coming in, for every opportunity.
And just to get back to our fans, because, like, our fans are unbelievable fans.
And they're always, like, they don't shit on us.
They don't, like, it's been a tough couple of years.
and you could say that they should have fucking shot on us last year.
You know what I mean?
Like it wasn't a good enough season.
Like it just wasn't good enough.
But you know what?
Like our fans are always believing us and they're always like positive glass half full.
And like we owe them a good year.
And like I'm really excited to, you know, hopefully bring them that.
Hell yeah.
That just fired me up for sharp talking.
And this is how you build, right?
Like you always talk about in your videos when you're starting a routine, you know,
whether it's, whether it's diet, exercise, it doesn't flip.
know like I'm not saying you guys are going to win 60 games next year but like you you
build you start competing for playoff sports that's how the that's how the
trajectory gets going the right way so I think that attitude is spot on fuck yeah man yeah
yeah no I it's it's it's just like every time you finish the year and like you're
going into a new one you just get excited to play hockey again and it's like now add on
these new guys that we're bringing in and like plus the bad year we had last year just
fills you with with juice even more so like I'm I'm
palm.
Fuck yeah.
That's awesome.
Okay.
Marr,
we're going to play this game.
All right.
We play it with everybody.
It's called pass,
shoot,
score.
And basically we give you
categories of things
that we know you like,
and you just have to rank them
pass, shoot,
or score.
Passing the puck.
Passing the puck's cool.
And actually,
you're kind of an assist man,
so it's pretty cool.
But passing is our least favorite.
Sometimes.
Yeah, yeah.
Shooting is our second favorite
because we love puck's on net,
but obviously score is number one.
It's the ultimate goal.
Okay?
All right.
You're number one.
This is going to be a tough one because I know you're into this stuff and I've got some hard ones in here.
Your first category is movies.
Pass shoot score.
The Hangover.
Step brothers and Superbad.
Okay.
So I'm going to go with pass is stepbrothers.
Really?
That's your least favorite?
Of the three.
Okay, okay.
Wow.
Chris, Chris had big money on stepbrothers being your score.
I thought that was going to win for sure.
Yeah.
I love stepbrothers, but I'm, so I'm going to go with shoot.
Shoot is super bad.
Wow.
And then scores got to be the hangover.
Wow.
Okay.
I love the hangover.
Now here's your follow up.
Are you a fucking freak like Laz?
And do you think Hangover 3 is better than the Hangover 1?
or do you like the OG?
Absolutely not.
Hangover one is definitely better.
Thank you.
Hangover one is definitely better.
Thank God, dude.
And that's a fact.
Hangover one is better.
He's a freak for saying that.
I know.
They're all good.
Like, I think they're good,
but he's a freak for saying that, I think.
I agree.
Him and Tage have the same take,
and it's just because they like Allen so much.
They're like, there's more Allen in three,
and I'm like, okay, but one is still a better movie.
Just get your fucking brain check, boys.
Okay.
Here's your next category, Mark.
And this one's going to be really hard
And Laz made me do this
So I apologize in advance
Pass shoot score
Former Sharks teammates
Jumbo
Bernsey
Marlow
Oh you guys can't do this
They're gonna pass on every one of them
All those guys are fucking nods
Fuck those clouds
There's a reason they're gone
Honestly they're all legends
anyway, so like,
just a legend for legend.
Yeah, how about Jumbo though,
dude?
Jumbo's such a hoot.
Dude, I got to meet him in Vegas.
He's fucking,
everything he said is just makes me laugh.
He's so funny.
He's so funny, man.
I saw him in Vegas.
This is a little story,
but I see this guy in Vegas.
He's like, yeah,
come to whatever,
like, we're texting each other.
I call him FaceTime and met up with him
in the casino.
And then,
I forget where you were you staying,
right?
I think of Venetian or something.
And then he's like,
yeah, come out to the room of ribbon.
I'm just going to go.
stop by whatever.
I'm going up to the room.
I just seem like I'm in Vegas.
Like I'm maybe trying to play some cards.
Like get a drink in me.
Like go have some nice food.
Like we go out to the room.
We're sitting there an hour and a half ago.
We start watching the debate in his hotel room.
But I'm like, his wife's downstairs.
Like playing cards, do whatever.
Like we're like up in the room.
Like, like, hey, you want to like go do something?
Like, let's go buzz.
No?
I got to put the, might take a little nap.
Yeah.
I think a little nap.
You're like, all right, I'm going to go.
You're like, thanks for inviting me up.
Great hang, bro.
Yeah, good egg.
It was fun.
I love hanging with you.
I'll take any opportunity.
I never take it for bed for sure.
Dude, 100%.
I saw him the next night.
We were at the fucking UFC fight.
And I was with Yans and Biz.
And we're sitting there.
And Yans, like, looks down the aisle and he's like, is that jumbo?
And just like, there's a dude with a fucking huge beard sticking out.
You know?
And I'm like, yeah, it's definitely jumbo.
So we see him and like,
he was like,
Jan's like,
Jumbo,
he finally turns over
and he's like,
hey fellas,
let's get a knockout,
hey.
And I'm like,
yeah,
buddy.
I'm so good.
I'll answer the question.
I'll answer it.
Oh,
wow.
Wow.
Okay.
Go.
Yeah,
I'll answer it.
It goes based on
like my best relationship
with the guys,
especially currently.
Yeah.
But pass for Patty,
um,
shoot for Bernsey and then,
uh,
score for jumbo.
Even with the debuts.
debate. I see Jumbo all the time. I see Jumbo all the time. Burns, he's in Carolina. He's obviously
still ripping it up and like, Patty, I don't see as much. Like, I haven't seen him as much.
Whatever, he's just not around as much as I see Jumbo. Yeah. How awesome is it having Jumbo
back around the boys with the team? It's great. He's so funny because like I can like
anybody, like anybody can go around him and feel like their, you know,
somebody, you know, which is like, like, you know, that should be, you know, the standard of
a good person. But when you're like as, as famous as Jumbo is and as half the career that he had,
like, I could bring a rookie and a friend around him and they're just like, they're best
friends with him. Like I, I had his place in St. Thomas. Like, um, I went up there a couple
years ago and I brought a friend from King City. His name's Stephano. He already has a nickname.
He's a nickname, his nickname, Steefu. He calls him Steefu.
And he's, and he's, and he's just in the, like, he's just part of the crew.
Like, Jumbo, like, we were messaging in a group chat one time.
Like, I sent, I sent him a couple photos of us when we were in Vegas.
He's like, oh, we're stupid.
We're stupid.
Send him a pick.
See what he's doing.
Yeah.
You know, so he just, like, makes guys feel really comfortable and makes, like, all these
young players coming in feel good.
We were playing mini sticks actually one time.
And, I don't know, I'll just bring this out because I thought that I think is funny.
But we were playing mini sticks one time in Jumbo's basement in St. Thomas, plays in St.
and his son was playing with us.
And my buddy Stefanol didn't think he put to work when he's around his kid.
Like, grab a stick, we're playing.
And he's playing net.
And I'm playing, like, whatever, me and River are just playing the middle.
And Jummo's playing net at the other end.
And Steph has a stick in his hand.
He's, like, pilling around with this, a wooden stick.
Just like the blade of, like, a regular-sized stick.
And he looks at it twice.
Bobby Orr's signature.
Oh, Jesus
My buddy stuff's like
Playing mini hockey with
Bobby Orr's sign stick
Oh my doing here
Yeah, it's so funny
It's good
That's just the sandlot
Part 2 right there, right?
It's almost like
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
You know him
You know him
You know a player
Yeah
Steph snaps it in half
By accident
Oh, that's fucking great
Okay, your next one
This one might be
super hard too.
This one's Italian dishes.
So past shoot's score,
Penaela vodka,
Nyaki,
or Fetuccini Alfredo.
So this is a hard one.
Because I'm kind of like I change,
like I change.
Like some days I'm one or the other.
Yeah,
I feel that actually.
I know that feeling very well.
Yeah.
So like,
you know, game day, for example.
Like I pass so much.
Yeah, yeah.
So many different occasions.
And it's all pretty much the same
thing but Italian that would be the disgrace
Italians because they carry the sauce differently
yeah right every shape of the
yeah um so no I would go
I'm gonna go pass for
pen ale vodka
and you'll shoot for
Fettuccini Alfredo and score for
Nyoki wow I love Nyoki
wow I love that it has to be but that's it
the only thing about Nyokies it has to be like good
like it has to be like my Nona used to make like the best
like homemade New York yeah some places
don't do it as good you got to
go to a good spot.
Oh, dude.
But some places
wreck it.
Like,
I don't,
I don't even trust it
unless I'm at a super fancy
place that is recommended to me.
Yeah.
Now,
yeah,
it's,
no,
for sure,
because they'll be,
like,
harder.
Like,
it won't be,
like,
pill,
it should be like pillows
when they end to you know.
How's yours?
Dude,
I know you're making it now.
How's yours dish?
Terrible.
Yeah,
I knew it,
dude.
I knew it.
Yeah.
It's a fucking disaster.
I screwed it right up.
Was your note of the goat of the family
with the,
the goats.
Yeah.
Yeah.
They like one of my nunas passed away,
um,
but they,
they,
they,
they were just,
they were just amazing.
Yeah.
Like they,
they just,
and,
and,
and quantity.
Like,
quantity.
And I'm like,
I always make the joke of like,
my cousin,
like my cousin Anthony,
like we always like,
joke around,
like we're quantity eaters.
Like,
we don't,
if the quality is this,
we're okay with it,
but it,
it's,
it's just got to be a lot of quantity.
Yeah.
So we just love to eat.
So like my nunas,
like,
didn't disappoint on either area.
quality and quality.
Are you using her recipe
or are you just winging it, dude?
No, I was looking up stuff on YouTube.
You're fucking winging it.
On YouTube, on YouTube, of course.
On YouTube, yeah, this is good stuff.
Like, yeah, I think Nick D.G. Yvonne, like,
yeah, I think make Nick D. Giovanni.
He's the man, dude.
So sick.
So sick.
I fucking, I will start playing that shit
and then look up in three hours have gone by.
And I'm like, oh, no, I've missed 10 meetings.
our producer right now is just smirking at the quantity stuff he comes from an italian family and i feel
like you can relate to that comment i'm dying right now yeah like it's actually like my uh mckenna
mckenna's like you're not a garbage just like i like at the end of the night like i'll go up
after this nine o'clock oh yeah i might overeat something like get like a little late night yeah
you got to do it you got it that's so good okay here's your last one
dude. This category is
Apple products.
Okay? Pass, shoot, score
your iPhone, your
iPad, or MacBook
Air.
Pass the iPad.
Okay.
I'm going to shoot the iPhone
and I'm going to score that MacBook Air.
There we go. Got them through college.
Got him through college.
You know, my MacBook Air, I don't even use anymore.
Just on a display in San Jose
I bought this stand for it.
You did not.
even work.
Yeah.
And I just put it on.
I swear, I swear, I'll send you guys a picture.
Yeah.
You have to.
There's like spotlights on it, you know?
It's like a shrine.
Everybody comes in, bows to it.
It's literally backlit.
Yeah.
My sister doesn't have a computer right now.
So when she came, at the time that she, uh, she came to the San Jose, she saw the
house.
She's like, oh, can I use this?
Like, whatever, you know, like, no, it doesn't work.
It just there for display.
Yeah.
Yeah.
You're like, that hasn't worked since 2021.
It's framed.
He framed it.
Yeah.
Oh my God.
damn it, that's so good.
All right, well, Mark, this
has been unbelievable. You just crushed that.
This whole episode's been an absolute blast.
Before we let you go, is there anything
you want to shout out, anything you want to plug?
No plugs, man. I just appreciate you guys having me on here.
I love this kind of stuff, so
thanks for having me on. That's it.
Hell yeah, man. Go sharks.
Hell yeah, dude. Go sharks.
We're going to have you on again soon for sure.
Sweet. Thanks, guys. I appreciate it.
Hell yeah.
Huge thank you to our.
boy Mario Ferraro. I loved it. Dan loved it. Butter loved it. Butter loved it. She's fired up right now
because how good that was. He's the man and you even said it in the up Dan. I want the sharks to win
so bad now. You know, like it just gets me so pumped up to be like, come on, dude. They've got some of
the best sweaters in the game. We deserve good sharks hockey and that's exactly where we're going to
get. Oh yeah. We're going to go to a game. What are you talking about? We have to go to game one for
Will. We'll see Will. We'll see Will's first goal. Yeah. And subsequently, we get C-Mar,
now too. Sick. So hope you enjoyed that interview with Mario Ferraro. What a beauty, what a guy.
And that is it for us this week on the Empty Nader's podcast or today on the Empty Nader's
podcast. And until we see you next time, skate hard.
