HBO's upcoming dark comedy DTF St. Louis stars David Harbor as a middle-aged guy struggling with erectile dysfunction and a stale marriage. He gets pulled into an infidelity app by a local weatherman, played by Jason Bateman, who turns out to be sleeping with his wife. When the main character ends up dead, detectives dig into a mess of secrets and betrayals. Creator Stephen Conrad drew the idea from watching middle-aged friends wrecked their lives on hookup apps back when those platforms were booming. He saw the false promise of excitement without fallout and knew it would end badly for them. The show almost stuck closer to a real-life case from a 2017 New Yorker article about a murder trial.
Starting point is 00:00:47 It involved a dentist in New York, accused of killing his friend with a powerful sedative called Mada Zolam found in the victim's body. Prosecutors claimed the dentist had an affair with a dead man's wife and, he was a man. even faked CIA documents to win her over. In 2016, he was cleared of murder, but convicted on forgery and later insurance fraud charges, serving 19 months in prison before. Release in 2018. Conrad eventually ditched the true story because his fictional twist did not match the real facts. He pivoted to build a fresh tale around those app dangers instead. D&N is sponsored by our partner.
