It's March 16th, and here's what's happening across entertainment and pop culture.
The 1980s cartoon G.I. Joe, a real American hero, turned Hasbro's action figures into a battle
against the terrorist group Cobra. In the 1987 movie, writers revealed Cobra commander's shocking
origin from Cobra, La, and ancient hidden civilization in the Himalayas.
They used bioorganic tech long before humans. They hated machines and planned to devolve people
back to animals using massive spore pods.
Head writer Buzz Dixon drew heavy inspiration from Hayao Miyazaki's 1984 film, Nossachi, of the Valley of the Wind.
That story features a toxic post-apocalyptic world full of giant insects and ancient ruins,
much like Cobra La's creepy snake and bug machines.
Dixon called it Dune, with fungus, and aimed to bring that eerie vibe to an American tale.
Even if cobra law came off as pure evil with no room for, peace.
Fans had mixed feelings about the movie's wild sci-fi twist.
While the animation by Japanese studio Toei looked sharper thanks to bigger budgets,
many longtime viewers and creators, like comic writer Larry Hama,
dismissed Cobra, La is too out there for a military show,
a clash with the grounded toy line battles.
Dixon explained the idea came during season two production
when Hasbro wanted a new boss character called Serpentor above Cobra Commander.
To make it work, he invented Colour,
Cobra La as a superior ancient force pulling strings, paying homage to Miyazaki's giant creatures.
He regretted the placeholder name blending Cobra and Shangrila and wished it was set in the Amazon instead.
These days, Cobra La lives on in Skybound Entertainment's new comics, merging G.I. Joe and Transformers.
Their anti-machine stance makes them perfect foes for the robotic transformers, breathing fresh life into the forgotten movie plot.
