50 years ago today, KIS dropped their fourth studio album, Destroyer, on March 15, 1976.
This record took the New York band from Underground Darling's to massive arena headliners.
Even now, Rolling Stone listed in their top 500 albums of all time.
Before Destroyer, three years of non-stop touring and wild live performances created a die-hard.
fan base. Their 1975 live album alive, stayed on the billboard charts for 110 weeks and earned
gold status, breaking them into the mainstream. To build on that, they hire producer Bob Ezrin,
right after his success with Alice Cooper. Ezrin added orchestral layers, piano, and even a kid's
choir, giving the album a huge movie-like sound compared to their earlier raw efforts. At first,
some fans pushed back because it strayed from the alive. Energy, as Frutton
man Paul Stanley later noted,
Over time, though,
Destroyer won everyone over big time.
More tracks from it end up in KISS set list
than any other album.
Standouts like the intense God of Thunder,
the big shouted out loud,
and the ballad Beth,
their first top 10 single and number seven,
sealed its place.
The album climbed to number 11 on the Billboard 200,
hit double platinum status,
a first for them.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary,
KISS is putting out
two fancy vinyl editions,
a purple liquid filled one and a metallic gold and purple fire.
Version with an embossed jacket, gold ink, and a poster.
