An Oscar nomination can boost a movie's box office by millions of dollars, but the Golden Statuette itself is officially worth just $1. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences bans winners and their heirs from selling it on the open market. Instead, they must offer it back to the Academy for that same $1 if they want to part with it. This rule started in 1950 to keep the award's prestige intact, Before that, older Oscars sometimes sold for huge amounts at auctions. For example, singer Michael Jackson once paid $1.54 million for a 1939 Best Picture Oscar from Gone.
