Welcome to Entertainment and Celebrity News. Today, two minutes of pop culture that matter.
The Oscar is one of the biggest honors in film, but it hits different when it's given after the
winner has passed away. The first posthumous win went to screenwriter Sidney Howard in 1940 for Gone
Gone with the Wind. Since then, 16 people have won competitive Oscars after their deaths out of more
than 60 nominations. This year, producer Adam Somner, who died in 2024, is up for best picture
for one battle after another, which could add to that list. Early on, these awards were mostly for
behind-the-scenes work, like scores, in art direction. Composer Victor Young waited 22 nominations
before his posthumous win in 1957 for around the world in 80 days. Art director William Horning
made history by winning back-to-back after dying for Gigi in 1958 and Ben-Hur the next year.
Producer Sam Zambalist also took Ben-Hur's best picture posthumously, and he's still the only
only want to do that. These moments often tug at heartstrings, especially for actors. Peter Finch
became the first acting winner after his death for Network in 1977, playing a wild news anchor.
Heath Ledger followed as the second, earning best supporting actor in 2009 for the Joker in the Dark Night.
Families and colleagues accept on their behalf, turning the ceremony into a bittersweet tribute.
Animation and music brought more emotional wins later. Walt Disney scored a posthumous short film
Oscar in 1969 for Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day.
Lyrist Howard Ashman won for Beauty and the Beast in 1992 after dying from AIDS-related illness,
helping spark Disney's big animation.
