The Oscar is one of the biggest honors in film, but it hits different when it's given after the winner has passed away. The first posthumous win went to screenwriter Sidney Howard in 1940 for Gone Gone with the Wind. Since then, 16 people have won competitive Oscars after their deaths out of more than 60 nominations. This year, producer Adam Somner, who died in 2024, is up for best picture for one battle after another, which could add to that list. Early on, these awards were mostly for behind-the-scenes work, like scores, in art direction. Walt Disney scored a posthumous short film Oscar in 1969 for Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day.
