Hey guys, Daniel Tarty here. I have a confession to make. I am a recovering slob. I started losing control of my weight in high school. And I just started eating whatever I wanted. And I let myself go. And I packed on a ton of weight through college. And even early into my marriage, I got to the point where I was just miserable. I was carrying around all this extra weight. And so I decided I was going to do something about it. I was too young. And I was too,
unhealthy to be where I was at in life. And so I got a book and I found a strategy that said,
if you'll just count calories and track your calories and only eat so many calories that you're
going to be fine. And you have a calorie deficit and it burns the fat. And well, it worked a little
bit. I did it. I did it religiously. But I felt like crap because the calories I was eating
were that healthy. You know, I thought, well, I can eat twinkies and ice cream and
sugar and just all this junk as long as I hit those calories. And the strategy I was using,
the experts, air quotes, the experts said that was fine. Well, I gave up on that because I didn't
feel good, even though I was losing a little bit of weight. I put back on the weight and I got
tired and stuck again. I found another book. And the book said, hey, you don't have to worry
about calories. Well, that rang my bell because I thought, well, that's fun. I don't have to
worry about calories as long as you eat the right quality of food. Okay, so healthy food, nuts and,
you know, lean meats and veggies and all that kind of thing. And well, man, I took that don't worry
about calories thing to heart and I ate so much of the air quotes again, right food, healthy food.
Here's what I figured out. Both the quantity and the quality matter. And when I got that,
figured out and I applied a strategy that said I'm going to watch how much I eat and I'm going to pay
attention to how nutritious, how wholesome, how good that food is for my entire system, not just for
losing weight. That was the ticket. And I started losing weight and I've been able to keep it off
and my energy's high and I feel good and actually crave healthy foods all the time and I crave the
right amount and my body's gotten used to being a healthy person. But you know what the trick was? I had to count
calories and they had to be the right kind. Why am I telling you this? Well, if you want to get healthy,
hopefully that strategy helps you out. I'm not a nutritionist. I'm not a doctor. I don't know exactly
the best plan for you, but that worked for me. Here's what I do know. There's a principle in here,
and that is that leaders, leaders don't give themselves a pass on quantity because they're going
to make up for it in quality. Or they don't give themselves a pass on quality because they
make up for it in quantity. You know, when I was in sales, there's two components, two levers here of
there's how many calls I can make during the day, and then there's the quality of that phone
conversation. Well, which one matters? Both of them. We all know that if we've done sales.
If you just dial 100 phone numbers randomly and you don't smile and you don't engage and you don't
build rapport and you don't follow up and you don't really serve the prospect, and well, you're not
going to close that sale. And if you call one person and you do all that stuff really, really well,
and you close the sale, and then you hang it up that day, and you don't keep dial in and maximize
the rest of the work day, well, you're going to get very average results over the course of the month.
So what do you do? You guys have coached sales teams. You know how this works. You coached a number of calls
made, number of contacts, and you also coach to the substance of that call. Quality and quantity.
Hey, what about this one?
When you're telling yourself, oh, it's really busy at work and I really care about work-life balance.
I want to see my family.
But this month, it's just, it's so all-consuming.
So I'm only going to see my family for 30 minutes this month, but I'm going to make sure it's really quality time.
Have you done that one?
I've done that one.
Guys, you and I both know there is no amount of qualityness in 30 minutes that you can pull off to make up for an entire month of not being around your family.
Now you can't take the whole month and just be with your family.
That's why it's called balance.
You've got to balance these things.
You've got to thread that needle sometimes.
But here's what I want us to not do as leaders.
Don't give yourself a pass on quality and quantity as trade-offs for each other.
Because leaders, the ones that get the best results, here's what I believe.
I believe the best results are reserved for the leaders who are daily pursuing
the best way to maximize the quantity of activity and making sure that it's quality activity.
Think about your team right now.
They probably skew towards one or the other.
If they're really good in the morning and they're working their tails off and then through the rest of the day,
they just kind of fizzle and wonder off, hey, it doesn't matter how quality of the morning is.
The afternoon, we still got to bring it.
Or maybe you're on the other end of the spectrum.
You and your team are grinding, grinding, grinding, grinding.
you're making a lot of smoke but no fire.
That's exhausting.
Just because you're running on that treadmill doesn't mean for progress.
So you've got to evaluate this stuff.
Look at your activities.
Look at your metrics.
Look at your meetings.
Look at every aspect of your life.
Your physical fitness.
All of these things have this aspect of the right activities have to happen,
quality activities, and the right frequency, consistency over time.
When you do that, your team,
get the right results. When you do that as a leader, you'll be the leader that team needs.
When you and your team are in sync doing this all the time, your business is going to grow.
When that happens, you're going to help more customers. And that is what it's all about.
So check in on this, evaluate, and then plug in a plan to take all that to the next level.
Until next time, keep learning and keep leading.
