Every town has a dark side.
In late 2011, Latoya Ammons, her three children, and her mother, Rosa Campbell, moved into a small, modest home in the suburbs of Gary, Indiana.
It seemed like a pretty ideal place to raise a family.
The reality, however, is much different than what they expected.
Because within just days, the Ammons would realize that they were not moving into an empty house, which they can now call their own,
and something sinister there
it already called dibs
and it did not want to share the space
Hey guys it's Andrew and thanks for tuning
into this episode of Everytown
but today we're going to check out a true
haunted story
normally a tale like this would
perhaps be dismissed by many but
the interesting thing here is the
ammins were not the only ones to witness
the strange events and experience the terror
and well-respected people
within the community saw things with their own eyes
they can now never get out of their heads.
So let's head on over to Indiana.
Check out the strange case of the Ammons Family Haunting,
aka the House of 200 Demons.
The Amund's brood was excited for their new beginning.
In November of 2011, Latoya Ammons,
her three children, two boys, ages 7 and 9,
and a 12-year-old girl,
and her mother Rosa pulled up with their U-Haul
ready to move into their new house at 3860,
Carolina Street and Gary.
The home was relatively small, white with a covered porch,
with a few others like it dotting the landscape.
Carolina Street is not an upscale neighborhood by any means.
The road itself is not in the best condition.
Across the street from these homes, it's an old building made a brick,
looks like a factory or warehouse.
And kids got into their rooms, the two boys sharing one.
At first, everything seemed normal enough.
But then, less than a month after their arrival in December of 2011,
well, things began to get strange.
One morning, Latoya woke up to find the front porch,
completely infested with a swarm of flies that seemed to have come out of nowhere.
There were so many of them that any outsider would quickly suspect
that there was something dead or rotting in the home,
but that wasn't the case at all.
And not only was there no strong smell to attract them,
but it was also weird because the swarm appeared in December.
when it's cold outside and most species of flies hide under the soil or just die.
At first, Latoya and Rosa didn't pay much attention to the phenomenon.
Just tried to get rid of the annoying swarms, but no matter what they did, the flies return the next day,
each time worse than the day before.
After a while, though, by using enough raid spray, the swarms disappeared, and it was a sense of relief.
They were happy just to have gotten rid of them, but little did they know,
this was just a warning sign of much worse things to come.
And soon the Ammons began to feel a bit uneasy in the place that should be the most comfortable for them.
One night, for example, when the whole family was sleeping in bed,
but one by one they each began to wake up from the sound of footsteps coming from the basement stairs.
At first, they just tried to ignore them, and they were quiet so they weren't sure what they were.
But then they grew louder and clearer, echoing from the basement and into the kitchen,
up into the house. After a while, Latoya and her mother had no other choice but to check it out.
But they never found anybody, only an open door, one which they always kept shut, the stairs
leading down to the dark and ominous basement below. They wanted to go down the stairs,
but something about the scene made it scary to do so. They shut and locked the door and put a chair
up against it and then just tried to go back to bed. So up until this point, the thing's
happening were a bit unnerving, but it wasn't anything that had them thinking they were actually
in a haunted house. And a couple nights later, once again in the dead of night, La Toyo was awoken by the
creaking sound of her closet door slowly opening. Never seen it like that before.
Miss entity was a large, unsettling shadow, but she watched and disbelieve as it left her bedroom
and then headed for the living room, disoriented and still not understanding what she had seen.
and the toy had jumped up and ran after the strange figure.
Perhaps it was an intruder, or a prank by one of her children.
But what she was about to discover would forever change the way she understood the world entirely.
Maybe like three in the morning, and they saw this shadowy figure pacing back and forth in the living room.
She flicked on the light, and in the blink of an eye, the silhouetta vanished.
A mysterious intruder was now gone, but on the floor remained a muddy footprints that it left behind.
For many, this might have been the time to get out once and for good.
The reality was that the family had no place to go.
And not everybody can just uproot in the blink of an eye,
as there are financial consequences and stressors on everyone, especially the kids.
The toy had talked to her mom about it, and they essentially thought,
well, what's the worst that could actually happen?
Were the flies and the sounds and sights scary? Yes, but it wasn't harmful,
and so far it had an effect.
to the children, at least not yet.
But like all stalkers, no matter what realm they belong to,
while they tend to escalate in their tactics.
Months later, on March 10th of 2012,
La Toya and Rosa were hosting a gathering to mourn the death of a loved one.
At evening, a small group of friends and family were staying over
when at around 2 a.m.
Something scary happened.
Latoya was sleeping in her mother's room
with their 12-year-old daughter and a friend of the girl
who was staying over.
The woman would never forget what she saw.
A sight so shocking
and all she could do was call out to her mom
amid screams and psalms.
Rosa would also never forget it.
As there in the middle of the bed,
her granddaughter began floating in the air,
several inches up with the wrinkled bed sheet
draped over her body.
Everyone in the Rome was stunned
and led by Rosa,
all they could do was pray to the Lord.
And the girl began to fall back
down to earth and when she woke up, well, she couldn't remember anything that had happened.
Unfortunately, no one was hurt in the incident, but from that day forward, nothing was the same.
The visitors who were there soon went home and became experts at finding excuses on why they
could never return. Amunds had no choice but to acknowledge that something sinister had taken
hold of their home. Concern for their own safety and that of their children, Latoya and Rosa,
called local churches for guidance, until they finally found,
one willing to help. The ministers listened carefully to every detail of their story, and their
conclusion was clear and powerful. Le Amunds' home had become the target of a demonic occupation.
Determined to find out what this demon was, and in order to protect themselves from evil spirits,
the toy and her mother followed every recommendation, and they cleaned the house thoroughly
with bleach and ammonia, anointed the children's hands and feet with olive oil, and put oil
in the shape of a cross on their foreheads.
Hoping for further protection, the women consulted two psychics,
who told them that their home was occupied by no less than 200 demons.
The psychics explained that the family situation was critical
and that their only real option was to move out.
However, the Ammons were unwilling to follow such advice.
It was not out of pride or stubbornness,
but moving was not an option because they simply couldn't afford it.
Their only choice was to expel,
the spirits that had taken up residence in the house, or at least resist them as long as possible.
So, following the advice of the psychics, Latoya built an altar in the basement.
A simple one consisting of a side table covered with a white sheet on which she placed a candle
and statues of the Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, and Jesus Christ.
She also covered the basement walls with salt, and with a friend perform a cleansing ritual
in the house, burning sage, starting on the top floor and working their way down to the basement.
La Toya drew crosses in the smoke in each room, while their friend read Psalm 91.
You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence
that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
A thousand may fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
After this, for the next three days,
well, everything seemed to return to normal.
It was as if these entities had never even been there.
But then they reacted.
After the first few days apiece,
Latoya noticed that her children were starting to act a bit unearthly,
the lack of a better term.
Sometimes the youngest boy would sit in front of the closet
and talk to a child that no one else could see
and whose topics of conversation were not very pleasant.
I've been here long enough.
I came to kill and I will kill, he would say.
He also described in detail how it felt to be murdered.
On another occasion, her other boy was thrown out of the closet by something
which caused him to hit his sister, knocking her against a head bore that caused an injury that required stitches.
Young girl later told a psychiatrist that she sometimes felt suffocated.
Unable to speak or move while voices told her she would never see her family again and that she would be dead in 20 minutes.
Latoya soon began to believe that she and her children were being possessed.
She noticed that her body temperature would rise rapidly.
She'd begin to shake, feeling like she was going to lose consciousness.
Rosa, however, never experienced anything of the sort, which she attributed to the protection of a guardian angel.
By April of 2012, the women took the children to see.
see a doctor at an office park.
Upon entering the examination room,
and the doctor felt an inexplicable sense of dread
that he initially tried to ignore.
Latoya began to tell her story
while the doctor, still struggling with his discomfort,
took notes.
And suddenly the younger son began to curse aggressively,
but not in a child's voice.
It was a deep and guttural demonic tone.
A little boy was then shot into the air,
thrown against a wall without anyone touching him.
He fainted, his older brother then lost consciousness, and although the medical staff tried to revive them, they needed more help.
Someone in the office called 911, and within minutes a group of police officers and paramedics rushed the children to the hospital.
When the boys woke up, the older one was acting normal, but the other one had seemed to gone completely crazy.
He began screaming, fighting, and attempting to attack anyone nearby with such force, but it took three grown men to completely restrain.
It was chaos.
A hospital worker convinced that the children were being abused
contacted the Department of Child Safety
because Latoya appeared to be suffering from mental illness.
The DCS caseworker, Valerie Washington, concluded in her report
that neither Latoya nor her children showed any health problems
other than the bruises and cuts, they say, came from their situation at home.
The psychiatrist who evaluated Latoya
ultimately concluded that she was,
competent. Later that day, Washington, a nurse, and Rosa took the children into a small
examination room to interview them alone. The situation repeated itself. The youngest child began
to growl, fixed his gaze on his brother, and said in a sinister voice,
It's time to die, I'm going to kill you. The older brother frightened ran to his grandmother,
and the youngest out of control lunged at Rosa and delivered a powerful headbut to her stomach.
Arosa, the pillar of her family, would not be intimidated.
Firmly holding the child's hand, she said,
You're not my grandson.
You're a demon.
With a twisted smile and a sickly look,
the child walked backwards until he reached a wall,
breathing heavily with a blank stare in his eyes.
And the situation was like nothing these people had encountered,
and now many people, both inside and outside the hospital,
were certain a malevolent force was attacking the animal.
and his family. Among them was Valerie Washington of the DCS.
Latoya and her youngest son spent the night there, while Rosa took the two older children
to stay with a relative. After that, things did calm down a bit. The next day, on the day,
the youngest child's eighth birthday, Valerie told Rosa to bring the other kids back to the hospital.
They had a family celebrated with cake and songs, but as soon as the party was over, they received
the worst possible news.
DCS, concerned about the family's physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being,
would be taking custody of the children and was painful for everybody involved.
On the morning of April 20th, the 2012, Latoya, then received some unexpected help.
The hospital chaplain, concerned about the family situation, contacted Reverend Michael Maginot.
The first time I heard about the incident was when just after the boy,
walked up the wall backwards.
There was a fur there
about people running out, calling for the police,
security, the chaplain.
He called me.
Imagine you know I'd never performed an exorcism,
but nevertheless, he decided to visit Latoya and Rosa
in their home.
Women welcomed the priest,
hoping that the intervention of a man of God
would finally solve their problem.
Well, when I went to do the interview
at the home with the mother and the
grandmother. It was a four-hour interview, and the first two hours were basically just getting
information of all the occurrences and phenomena that was surrounding everything leading up to that
incident at the emergency room in the hospital. Michael himself also noticed some strange things
as he observed several footprints appearing on the living room floor out of thin air.
and Latoya began to complain of severe headaches,
suspecting that this discomfort might be related to demonic activity.
Maginot placed a crucifix on Latoya's forehead,
and suddenly she began to convulse.
After four hours of questioning,
the reverend was convinced that the family was being tormented by demons
and that their home was under their control.
His judgment was firm and clear,
it was not safe for them to stay there,
and they had to leave immediately.
That same day, Latoya and Rosa moved in with a relative.
A week later, the DCS sent a full team to the Carolina Street home to determine if this was a safe place for the kids.
This team consisted of a late county police officer and two other deputies, Gary's police captain, and Valerie Washington.
Latoya refused to go inside, so Rosa led the group through the house.
Let's see if we got anything.
Yeah.
Huh, but they said, you know, they would hear stuff in the basement.
Wait a bit.
Come in.
Somebody was going to the challenge back here.
Look.
Oh, wow.
In the basement, she pointed out a patch of earth that she believed was where the demons were entering the home from.
The captain, skeptical of the supernatural, said he believed in ghosts, perhaps, but not demons, not possessions.
However, after visiting the home, his perspective.
it began to change, while interviewing Rosa the team's electronic equipment inexplicably began
to malfunction. One of the officers who recorded audio in the home said that when it played
back, they could swear to hearing a disembodied voice in the background. Several photos were taken
as well, and some showed silhouettes, hands, and even a disturbing face. None of it was concrete.
Eerie, absolutely, given the circumstances, but maybe these images were an example of
peridolia, where the brain makes connections and sees things that aren't really there.
Unsure what they were dealing with, the group returned to the house again.
This time, accompanied by other officers and case manager, Samantha Eilich, who replaced Valerie
because she refused her return and was tired of nobody believing her when she said that
there was some sort of haunting going on here.
Once in the basement, Eilich noticed a strange liquid dripping down from the walls.
It was a slippery and sticky liquid.
similar inconsistency to oil or grease.
Upstairs in the living room, Eilich felt a tingling sensation in her left pinky finger,
which then turned white.
And she had a panic attack and couldn't breathe.
The police captain, distraught refused to stay in the house until nightfall
and asked that the inspection be expedited.
As the officers continued their investigation,
they then noticed that oil-like substance dripping from the blinds upstairs,
The men cleaned and sealed the room for about 25 minutes, but when they returned, they found that the substance had reappeared.
After speaking with Reverend Maginot, they understood the liquid could only be a demonic manifestation.
That night, the Reverend blessed the house before performing a minor exorcism, one that didn't require church approval and included prayers to cast out the demons.
The two officers present never dared to claim that the disturbing presence they found.
felt was truly demonic, but they also never denied that the house had a heavy, unpleasant energy.
A week later, Eilich began to have health problems, and she suffered third-degree burns in a
motorcycle accident, broke three ribs while skiing, and fractured her hand and ankle, all within
the same month. So was she affected by these demons in a similar way like the Ammons family was,
or was that all just a coincidence? Once this minor exorcism was complete,
Reverend received permission from his bishop to perform a direct exorcism on Latoya.
The ritual would be the same as before, but this time it would have the backing of the Catholic Church.
Before the ritual were to begin, Maginnell wanted to stand a fighting chance against the demons,
and so he tried figuring out who they were.
It was pretty much without incident until we get to the part of your name,
and you asked for its name now. So far, she's always been silent.
and I says, is your name, whatever.
And then all of a sudden she started convulsing and such.
So now once you have a name, you kind of attack it.
With the help of Latoya and instructions from the church,
they believe they had found at least one name that seemed most fitting in this case.
And it just so happened to be one of the seven princes of hell,
aka the seven deadly demons.
His name is Beaselbub.
He represents gluttony and envy.
is often referred to as the Lord of the Flies,
due to the fact that the little insects are often seen whenever he's around,
the same infestation that earlier had been found on Latoya's porch.
Magano went on to perform three exorcisms in total,
two in English and one in Latin.
During the ceremony, Latoya convuls violently and experienced pain
that she equated to being as intense as childbirth.
During this time, they got rid of many demons,
too many to even count.
So I went through the whole right, and then finally went the second time,
and then it was just like just focusing on the condemnation's part.
And that was kind of riling up.
I think I even went a third time.
But you could tell it was kind of weakening,
and then eventually she fell asleep again.
When she awoke, she did feel a little bit better.
The family then moved to Indianapolis to a house at Maginot had previously blessed.
Things weren't easy at first as Latoya suffered from frequent and intense nightmares,
but after a while the nightmares stopped and peace finally came.
Eventually a new family moved into the old Ammon's house, unfortunately,
and these new tenants reported any paranormal activity.
In November of 2012, Latoya regained custody of her children,
and although the Indianapolis Department of Child Services monitored them for a while
to make sure everything was okay,
By January of 2013, the Ammons family was reunited and living under normal circumstances.
They were finally able to breathe a sigh of relief, and the Toyo was deeply grateful to God for protecting her and her family, eventually in the end.
Some people remain skeptical of this entire story, of course, leaving it to be either a hoax orchestrated by the Ammons or a case of collective hysteria affecting the children, nurses, and police officers involved.
But others, while others believe that perhaps the amments were briefly the target of the sadistic and disturbing games of malevolent beings.
Beings that saw vulnerability in that family and decided to descend upon them, only they had been driven away by something greater in the end.
Something that watches over all of us, perhaps protecting us from situations that we can't handle on our own.
So that's it for this week's episode of Everytown.
I hope you all enjoyed it.
to come back next week for another one,
though it's scary, strange, and mysterious stories,
because you never know.
Maybe your town will be next.
