A lot of interesting updates today and over the weekend.
So actually first, let's do this.

So now let's talk about what's going on in the world of AI news.
So first and foremost, meta's AI chief says AI superintelligence is actually a long way away.
So this came from a recent report, but said Meta's chief AI scientist, Yan LeCoon,
believes that current AI systems are decades away from achieving.
common sense and human level intelligence. So this comes in contrast to the belief of
NVIDIA CEO that said AI will surpass human abilities in the next five years.
Lacuna argues that current AI technologies is limited by reliance on text data and lack of
understanding of basic concepts. So yeah, everyone's talking about superintelligence when
AI essentially becomes smarter than us all and it doesn't really need us. I'd say we're
probably, I want to go ahead and go on the NVIDIA side and the Open AI side and say,
we're a lot closer than a lot of people think.
Next, next news piece, new updates.
Well, kind of.
The new update is no update from Google's Gemini.
So Google has reportedly delayed the public launch of its new AI Gemini to January due to issues
with non-English queries.
So their new model, so this isn't replacing Bard, at least.
we don't think so, but it's replacing the Bard model, right? So that is the model that,
or, you know, Palm, the Palm 2 model. So Gemini would be replacing it. And reportedly it was,
you know, much more powerful than GPT4 and all of these things. But apparently now we see one of the
reasons why it's being delayed is it's struggling with non-English queries because Gemini was
originally announced back at the IO conference in May. So, you know, a lot of people have been
looking forward to this, but here we are six months later.
and really no updates from Google and when Gemini may or may now be coming in this canceled launch event.
Also, it's kind of because Open AI is running away with this.
So, you know, Google really wants to reportedly get this Gemini launch right,
unlike when it first launched Bard and there was a bunch of errors that really grabbed the headline.
So in a bad way.
All right, last but not least in AI news, we have some new drama at OpenAI.
You know, hey, we went like a full week and a half without any drama.
But reportedly, some new reports show that there's a potential conflict of interest between OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, and the startup rain neuromorphics, which is developing a neuromorphic processing unit or an MPU chip.
So according to these recent reports, Altman's firing and rehiring, you know, about two weeks ago in mid-November, actually had to do with this as well.
and it was linked to the company's plan to buy $51 million worth of NPU chips from Rain,
a company in which Altman had personally invested, according to reports.
And also this involvement from Saudi-based investors in Rain led the forced divestment by the U.S. government due to national security concerns.
So, yeah, a lot of things going on behind the scenes with these NPU chips and Rain neuromorphics and Open AI,
Sam Altman. So keep an eye. I'm sure there's going to be a lot more reporting happening on this soon.

And then I'm going to describe a little bit about what this is,
what it means and kind of a little bit more on the competitive landscape.
But I think it's important to first even just look at this
because the quality is pretty fantastic.
So let's go ahead and see if we can share this live.

So we're going to go ahead and play this promo video.
It was released last week on Pico Labs,
their new 1.0 version coming.
And then I'm going to talk about it a little bit as well.
And so I'm going to go ahead, actually play it with no sound.
and kind of narrate it for you.
So here we go.
So someone's typing in Elon Musk in a spacesuit in 3D,
and it's generating some amazing images, right?
So it's saying a new kind of movie magic,
and we're seeing different, you know, visuals here that look extremely high quality,
like they were done in CGI in a studio,
different animated things, different things that look realistic in real life,
being able to drop an image in and, you know, use text,
prompts to move it, but it's hard to explain the quality.
You know, and being able to expand your canvas with AI using a photo to video,
video to video, text to video, being able to change here in this example, a model walking
down the street and being able to change, you know, what clothes the model is wearing.
A lot going on on the screen in this quick little hype video here from PICA.
But I'll say this.
And we're going to start with PICA, and then we're going to talk about a couple of other things.
I don't know if this is kind of that chat GPT moment per se.
But I will say this.
The quality of this new PICA Labs is outrageous.
It's outrageous.
So it's not out now.

Let's talk a little bit about AI video.
All right.
And I'll quickly even share a little bit on my background.

way back in the day. I was a multimedia journalist. What does that mean? Well, you know, I, I report
for some of the largest newspapers in the country.
I think my last one I worked at was in Chicago sometimes.
I was always looking a little bit further ahead.
So, you know, I was trying to do, you know, live blogs and things like this.
And this is back, you know, more than 15 years ago now, 15, 20 years ago.
But one thing I did as well is video, right?
So I was a reporter, but I was also putting together, you know, audio slideshows with photos and
in video as well.
So I've been editing video and using video and worked in different aspects of video production now.
You know, I don't do it as much recently, obviously, but I've spent probably more than 10,000 hours,
either shooting, editing, producing video.
Okay.
What I'm seeing now from this Piga Labs 1.0 promo video, yes, it is that.
It's a promo video.
You know, it's tightly edited.
I'm sure very selective, selective on the shots that they used.
But if we see what's going on in this promo video,
if we see this come to market exactly as it is, right?
Because sometimes the hype doesn't always live up to the first product.
Great example of that.
Just kind of talked about earlier in the show Google Bard.
Right?
When Google kind of started to promo Google Bard, it looked amazing.
It looked like it was going to, you know, be up to par with chat GPT or even ahead.
And I don't think that's been the case, right?
But with PICO Labs 1.0 here, the quality is outstanding.
The quality here is outstanding.
And some of the features, you know, like what's being shown on the screen here,
being able to instantly change your canvas size, being able to take a photo, a high-quality photo,
maybe that you've generated in mid-jurney or generate in Dali or something like that,
being able to drop and make a video is pretty outstanding.
Yes, these features have been available in other programs for a while.
But from a quality standpoint, what you're seeing on the screen here, and again, check your show
notes if you're listening on the podcast. This looks like CGI level, right?
This looks like it was built in a lab by a team of people using supercomputers, like the actual outputs, right?
The early days of text to video or photo to video looked very, looked very archaic, right?
It looked like something you would never actually use in a real project, right?
Some of the earliest generations from runway as an example,
you know, kind of even pre-gen one, right?
Like when you first saw runways, video offerings being touted,
what we're seeing from PICA Labs 1.0,
I'm extremely excited about because I think it could be that chat GPT moment.
Douglas, thanks for joining.
Douglas saying you called PICA a height video.
Is that all this is or are we actually there?
That's a great question.
So, yeah, even in editing terms, I should explain that, right?
A hype video is something you put together with, you know, fast cuts, right?
So I'm not saying that they're trying to hype this, but a hype video is generally
something you put together with a lot of different, very high quality, fantastic visuals,
and you only show maybe a half second to a second of it at a time.
So it's hard to look at one full video over the course of three seconds, four seconds,
eight seconds, right?
So hype video just means a ton of high quality visuals cut together very quickly.
So are they hyping it?
Absolutely.
Does it take away from the quality?
I don't know.
I've spent a lot of time in runway.
And actually, let's go to runway next.
Because I think we also have to talk about runway here.
So I'm going to go ahead and share my screen because right about the same time, right actually before this Pika Labs 1.0 announcement.
we had some updates from Runway.
So let's go ahead.
I'm going to throw those up on the screen.
We're going to play those as well.
And I'm going to talk a little bit about some of the new functions and features in runway.
And we have done a full episode here on Everyday AI on Runway in the past.
And that's in the show notes as well.
So let's go ahead and see kind of some of you can even see if you're joining this live,
some of the different quality comparisons between Runway, which has been out.
And it's been the leader.
for a while. So let's take a look at some things that runway has.
All right. So we're seeing much more kind of picturesque, slower visuals,
a little more cinematography in these. And I'm going to talk about this here in a second,
but some features that runway has that I'm extremely excited about, this motion brush,
which is fantastic. And I've used this as well. I used it on a recent project for actually,
of course that I've been working on that I'll be releasing soon.
So actually, let me know if you want to know more about that.
And I'll give you a preview here before it's announced.
But, you know, runway's been out for a while.
Right.
So let's talk a little bit about even the runway platform.
So PICA Labs has been available.
I've done some videos in PICA Labs, but this is not the 1.0.
This is more of their beta version.
Right now it lives within Discord.
So you can sign up for the free version or the pre 1.0 version of PICA Labs,
and you can go into Discord and use that.
The results in the original PICA Labs were okay.
But again, it was a free platform, right?
Runway is not a free platform.
So you always have to temper your expectations.
But even the free version of PICA Labs was pretty good.
But now let's talk about runway.
That's what I'm showing on the screen here.
So a lot of new updates in runway.
but you also have to look at the competitive landscape, right?
Runway has raised more than $100 million.
They currently have a billion-plus valuation with investors,
some of the biggest investors out there,
such as Google, Nvidia, Salesforce, etc.
But some new updates, right?
Some new updates that Runway announced,
here. So more, more control over the video. It says greater fidelity and even more expressiveness
when using runway. So runway, this was just November 20th. So about two weeks ago, they said we're
excited to introduce motion brush, gen 2 style presets, updated camera controls and more. So the
updated camera controls are great. It's those small touches in this kind of AI video that
that makes a big difference. So I did use this in a recent project where you can kind of
within a video, right? So you can drop in a photo and make a four second video out of it.
That's what you can do in runway right now. But then within that video, you can add slight
effects such as a slight zoom in, a slight zoom out, you know, panning to the left, panning up
and down, et cetera. So that's some of those new motion controls. But what I did want to talk about
here is this, the motion brush, because as far as I know, this is the only platform right now in the
generative AI space that offers something like this. I could be wrong there. I've used almost all
of the platforms, but not all of them. So let's take a little bit look here at the motion brush.
So right there, if you're joining us, there is a, it looks like an animated, you know,
something you might see from Pixar, but there is a pigeon on a stoop. It looks like it's in
you know, maybe Chicago or New York City right there.
So one of the downsides about early text-to-video or photo-to-video
generative AI systems, you know, such as runway, is you didn't have a lot of control over
where the motion was occurring, which can make it weird because sometimes, you know,
you might have a distinct foreground and background, and the background's moving,
or maybe you wanted the foreground to move or maybe something's moving that you don't want
to move.
So this new motion brush is great.
So in this example, you know, you have this.
background of a city, but you also have the foreground of this animated pigeon. So you can use the
motion brush and say, hey, instead of, you know, the clouds rolling by or instead of the camera panning,
I want everything else to not move. And then I just want this pigeon to move. So you can do that. And then
when you're done with the motion brush and you generate it, then you see just the pigeon moving.
And it does look like a slight zoom in effect was happening here. So,
that's some updates from Runway.
All right.
That's not the last one here.
So I'm going to jump in and let's look at one more quickly.
All right.
And this one I'm actually pretty excited about.
There isn't a lot of,
there isn't a lot of information out about this last one,
about meta's emu just yet.
So here's emu.
Right. So this is from META. So this is emu video and emu edit. So comparatively, you know, when this was
announced a couple of weeks ago, we talked about it here on the show in the AI news. And I said,
straight out, I said, this is a runway competitor. This looks like, you know, I don't believe META
was one of those investors like everyone else was investing in runway. But here on the screen,
you have this actual emu here. Looks like the emu is going skiing with some ski,
goggles, you know, some nice movement here. So we'll put this in the link of the show notes.
So if you wanted to go check out and read more. But I'd say if you're comparing right now,
at least what meta is showing for their new emu model that has yet to be publicly released yet,
it's pretty far behind. It's pretty far behind PICA Labs 1.0. It's probably about where the
current PICA labs that's available to anyone is, but this is currently, it looks behind even
where runway is with their Gen 2 model right now.
So, but you cannot discount meta, because unlike everyone else, they can throw unlimited
resource at any one of their projects that they're working on.
And, you know, meta, I think people think of meta as, oh, that's the Facebook parent company.
Yes, they own everything.
WhatsApp and Instagram, right?
But they're models that they're working on.
You know, Lama 2, kind of their version of the GPT technology, EMU.
I mean, you have the text to voice, the text to music.
Meta has so many high-quality models that they're working on.
And they're making, I believe, all of them open source as well.
You cannot count out meta in this discussion.
When we're talking about text to video, photo the video, what AI video is moving forward.
Because the other thing, too, is you have to think of the platform, right?
Meta as well as just about every other advertiser out there has said that they're going to be incorporated.
And I believe meta already has started to incorporate some AI generations inside their advertising platform.
So if you're an advertiser, think of some low-hanging fruit in terms of an application, right?
When an advertiser, if you don't have visuals to be able to use some of these models to create little videos for your product or service photos as well.
So I think that meta actually has some of the lowest hanging fruit in terms of real world application.
And who could start using the quickest at the widest scale, I think would probably be meta, right?
presumably it'll be free to use meta.
I don't believe they've been charging for any of their models as they're all open source right now.
All right.
Let's get some questions.
And I've got some hot takes as well.
I know it's Monday.
Maybe you're not ready for the hot takes, but I've got some.
Tracy asking, Tracy, thanks for joining us.
Tracy asking, how did they get such crisp features compared to others?
If we're talking about PICA Labs, because I do think from a quality,
standpoint, PICA Labs is impressive, right?
I'm bringing up some of the visuals here, right?
So this one.
Okay, so we have a text to video, presumably, again,
let's share the correct screen here.
So this is presumably a text to video.
And that's what I'm saying.
This is all hype right now.
You hope that these are actual generations within PICA.
I'm sure they are.
If this is a text to video generation, that's the leader right there.
Because the text to video in runway is not as good as what I'm showing on screen here.
So in this example, it says a pig in a tuxedo, photo realistic style, right?
Let me go back to that one.
In this little pig in a tuxedo here, photorealistic style, as Tanya is pointing out, this is crisp.
The quality of this, of everything that's in the Pico Labs 1.0 height video is through the roof.
I don't even think right now, Runway's text to video generation is here.
When I'm using runway, I generally use their photo to video.
It's much better.
Their text to video is not quite there.
If this is Pico Labs text to video that's going to be available to everyone producing these quality,
y'all there's going to be some video producers animation studios either in trouble or they're going to be
starting to use this technology right away all right um hot takes all right let's get some hot takes
i don't want this to be one of those 45 minute episodes but i've got some hot takes and actually
let's do this actually now that we have this text to video here on the screen showing
this pig in a tuxedo, photo realistic style.
This looks like something that was created that took a team of animators to create.
The quality, the crispness, the style.
This is all extremely high quality.
So let's get some hot takes.
And also let's, I want to have some fun and talk about what this might mean for the future.
Right.
Because when we look at what chat GPT specifically has done for the fields of content
creation, right, over the past year that has been out, it's changed content creation completely.
And that's just text.
But guess what?
The overwhelming majority of where consumers spend their time, their energy, and their
purchasing power is most heavily influenced by visuals, right?
They say a photo's worth a thousand words or 10,000 words or 100,000 words, whatever you want
to say.
A video is worth way more than that, right?
But we haven't yet had, even though I think runway is a fantastic platform and they've been the leader by leaps and bounce above everyone else.
And I do think that their photo to video runways is really, really good.
Like I said, I used it for a secret project that should be released here any day.
But this from PICA Labs, this text to video, and some of these generations in the hype video are outstanding.
and at least it's hard until we can, you know, try this out for ourselves,
but it looks to be on par or ahead of Runway's Gen 2.
But I wouldn't be surprised if, you know, a couple of weeks or a couple of months
after Pika Labs is available to everyone to see a Gen 3 update from Runway.
That's got to be in the works.
Gen 2's been out for a while.
All right, but let's get some hot takes.
Let's get some hot takes, Douglas.
Hot takes, yeah.
We're going to be seeing this in the mainstream.
We're going to be seeing text of video, photo of video in the mainstream in 2024.
I'm saying commercials, you know, not having to go out of your way to find these things.
We are going to be bombarded, I think, because this quality here, the cost to get the quality of what I'm sharing on my screen, this pig in a tuxedo photo realistic style, is not.
cheap to get this before generative AI. This is someone that's spent their career or a team of people
just to create something at the same quality, right, of just this pig in a in a tuxedo,
photo realistic style. So hot take number one, we're going to start seeing this everywhere in
2024. Like I said, commercials on TV ads. I mean, I think I think you're already starting to see it
on online ads.
We are going to be seeing this everywhere.
And I think early on, if you're someone like me,
if you've worked in a creative field or if you've spent,
you know, 10,000 hours plus editing videos,
I'll be able to see this is made with a Gen A.I.
But I think the majority of people,
if they look, you know, let's just watch again about five seconds
of this PECA Lab hype video here with this,
3D robot and this girl in a candy store and this anime and this dog in the cat, right?
These visuals, this one right here, this cinematic dog and a cat, that is so, so good.
This looks like it took a team of animators.
So hot take number one, we're going to see this everywhere.
And I think that the overwhelming majority of people out there, if you don't work in a
creative field, if you haven't spent a ton of time editing, it is going to be hard to tell
the difference, especially when it comes to animated cartoons, things like that.
Deepfakes, real people, it's not there yet.
It's not there yet.
Unless you're talking about, you know, I did see some of these generations earlier here,
where someone, sorry, I'm scrubbing through this here, here we go.
So this was a real video here.
So this model walking down the street and being able to change as an example
the top that she's wearing.
That's an editing feature
but from a real video.
So I don't think it's at the point yet
where it's going to produce
human-looking video
that is indistinguishable real from fake.
So right, we're all worried about deepfakes
disinformation, misinformation,
misinformation.
I don't think that, you know,
Pico Labs 1.0 or whatever runway comes out with
or Meta's emu is there.
It's not.
But in terms of animated video,
this is a legit game changer.
They were saying looks like a fabulous tool to be integrated with other tools like Canva.
Yes, absolutely.
Douglas saying look, PICA looks near Pixar quality.
Yes.
And that's why myself when I first saw this and I think so many other people,
when they saw this peak of 1.0, everyone said, yo, like if this is real,
if this actually happens, this is the chat GPT moment for visuals.
Right.
will we be able to ourselves go in there and type a simple, you know, prompt like cinematic,
a dog and a cat in a boxing ring and be able to get this output right away?
Maybe.
If so, that changes.
That changes the game.
All right.
Let's get a couple other hot takes here.
Let's get them going.
Here's what I see.
Here's what I see in the future with AI video, especially with some of these recent announcements.
from Pika Labs 1-0, some of the runway updates,
the fact that Mattis Emu is officially in the ring.
Here's what I see.
Ready?
Parents creating animated bedtime stories for their children using simple text prompts.
Or videos, right?
If you're taking a road trip and maybe you always throw on the same,
you know, Pixar video that your child has seen 30 times,
I don't think we're there in the next couple of months,
but I see this.
Some of these things I'm seeing in a year or so.
But I literally think that we will be soon the ability to create short,
customized, animated films for your children with a text prompt,
which is wild.
The skill barrier for some of these things is so low that I think once the quality catches up,
right?
Because right now the huge doubt.
Even if we're talking about something that's publicly available like Runway Gen 2 is the short duration, right?
I think you can now go up to 16 seconds, right?
But by default, it's four seconds.
But I think as the technology progresses, as the computing power gets cheaper so these companies can allow us all to create more without having to charge us more, that's huge.
Another hot take here, I think independent filmmakers are going to be able to produce feature films solely.
through AI generated visuals that are going to be at the same quality as things that we're used to right now.
You know, things that we've seen in the past, I won't say in the past five years, but let's say, you know, early 2000s.
You know, when we look at some of those, you know, Disney movies, some of those earlier Pixar movies, I think in the next year or two, we're going to see great AI filmmakers being able to produce short feature films that look like their, you know, Pixar.
quality by themselves. Some other things I see. Some fun ones here. And let me know. Let me know.
Do you agree with these or what do you think that this could lead to? You know, I'm just having
some fun here imagining together with the everyday AI audience. What could be in the near future
with AI video? I'm thinking customizable new segments where viewers select the content and the
presentation style. Personalized fitness videos featuring AI generated trainers adopting to your
progress. I think we're already starting to see this, but AI generated music videos, right,
that can visually interpret the lyrics and the mood of songs. That seems like a no-brainer,
right? We're talking about shorter, you know, two to four-minute songs. Maybe it's your favorite
song that doesn't have a video. Okay. Gen AI, text to video, image to video. I do think that we're
going to be seeing also this exact thing, have a video.
but with smaller indie artists that maybe don't have a budget for a high quality video.
And there's actually already been some that have been produced using Runways Gen 2.
I already talked about this, but I think we're going to see more immersive advertising
where generative AI systems create personalized commercials for each viewer.
So as kind of internet-connected TV becomes more popular, more and more people are cutting cable,
I think the data and the data tracking with what we are watching on our TVs is going to become better.
But I see a time in the very near future where, hey, if you're using as an example, Google TV, right?
And you haven't opted out of everything that they track.
I'd be fine with this.
I would be fine with a peak of labs, you know, maybe when it's that 3.0 or something,
creating specific custom-tailored AI video ads for me.
For products that maybe don't have an advertising team, I would love that.
But I think that's also the future.
I think we're going to see much more personalized and customized videos and advertising
across all different mediums, not just social media, but even when we're talking
about things like commercials, you know, or when you're going on YouTube and you always
see those pre-roll ads that are very highly targeted. I think you're going to see a lot of things
like this using generative AI. Here's a fun one. I think custom dream movies. What's that?
Well, you always wake up in the morning. You're like, oh, I had this dream, but, hey, I can't
remember a ton. I can only describe it with 10 words. I think there's going to be a company that literally
comes out. And they're like, hey, write down your dream. You know, it's an iOS app. You wake up and
you're like, oh, that was a cool dream. But I can't remember.
You're going to open your app.
You're going to type it in, and it's going to give you a little, I don't know, two to ten
minute reenactment of that dream, right?
Historical reenactments, right?
I think the way that we learn about history is going to change.
I think you've already seen this a lot with AI images, but I think you're going to see the
same thing with AI video.
There was no video, you know, through the course of history.
I think this is also potentially problematic because people are going to try to rewrite history
and to create narratives that maybe didn't exist.
But I think the way that future generations learn about history,
you know, world history, American history, whatever country you're from,
is going to change.
I think you're going to see a lot of more interactive and immersive videos with generative AI.
Another one, virtual fashion shows, right?
I think that would be really cool.
You know, right now I think it's just the big brands, you know,
that have those, you know, catwalk runway fashion.
shows, I think you're going to see this now all the time. It's not just going to be a once a year or a
quarterly thing. I think you're going to see virtual fashion shows. And I think that they're going to be,
even for the smallest brands, startup, you know, startup fashion companies are going to be able to do
this as well because the technology is going so, so fast. As we've seen, even if you just look at
original kind of like runway gen AI and look at where we are now with this PICO Labs 1.0 preview,
I can't wait to see where we get in the next year.

You are literally already seeing all these Gen.
I companies compiling a dream team of lawyers.
because lawsuits are nonstop.
There are hundreds of large, large lawsuits on this specific thing, Cecilia.

I really think it is because I think we're going to start to see so many more personalized
ads, so many more customized stories, so many more highly targeted selling experiences.
What's going to happen, y'all, if I'm being honest?
It's an attack on our pocketbooks.
because all of a sudden, we're going to have all of these, when you combine the availability of data
and how much easier generative AI is allowing us to interpret and make good use of that data,
if you combine that with then the ability to use that data and say, oh, here's everything Jordan's looking at on the internet,
here's every single e-commerce product he's looked at but hasn't bought,
I'm going to be seeing high quality, high targeted videos for those all over the place.
So I think as consumers, we're going to be getting a lot of highly targeted, high quality
product advertisements that maybe those companies just couldn't do it before.
So I'm excited about the future.
