I know nothing about what your day went like. I was busy. I never even saw you. I went and looked for you on 15 and 16. And, of course, there's only 10,000 people within a half a whole area.

How was it? Do you guys have fun? Yeah, it's fun. that you use the word fresh because that is the diametric opposite of what I am feeling right now. I will tell you it was a glorious day on the grounds of the Augusta National Golf Club. It was absolutely sensational weather-wise. A perfect day for scoring. And yet, there was only really one guy that was out there doing any scoring.

Now, I will give you a quick rundown of where I was positioned. I was maybe 10 feet from the T-box on 17. because we arrived early, we purchased chairs, and, you know, as relative newcomers to the idea of coming and setting up shop, by the time we arrived, we were still there pretty early. We were there before 10 o'clock. All of the primary estate around 16 had already been gobbled up. Oh, yeah. But we found a very nice slot over adjacent to the T-box is 17, where we could watch the guys pound the ball straight up the hill and also look through the beautiful tree. and see every shot coming in on 16.

So we could see the entirety of the length of 16 and all the putts on 16, all the approaches, the putts and so, and the T-balls on 17. So it was a wonderful spot. It also had the benefit of being slightly in the shade, which was very helpful in keeping Dr. Bill Simmons alive. Now, Dr. Bill Simmons did not get up out of his seat.

I mean, he got up to stretch, but we were trying to get him to go for a walk. He really wasn't into a walk today. Although he did while. Okay. He did get some concessions and he may have had a potty break. But other than that... So Bill's...

But forget what... I don't care what Bill thinks. I want to know what Bill's dad thinks of the Masters. I know you're going to do a show with him, but just give our listeners a quick overview of their impressions. Well, the bar is set incredibly high because Dr. Bill on his maiden voyage here to Augusta National, not only did he see yesterday at the par three all of the iconic golfers from his era jack nicholas gary player tom watson birdie in front of his eyes he also got to see every one of his the current

modern heroes that he was rooting for birdie 16 so tiger had one birdie today it was 16 yeah jordan speath went on a run of four birdies in a row he birdied 16 in front of us oh that's awesome Yeah. And we got, of course, the unbelievable trifecta of birdies out of Phil Mickelson, Cooch, and Ricky Fowler, where a couple of those balls looked like they were threatening to be holes in one from our vantage point. All right. What did the younger bill think?

So he had not walked 10, 11 and then down through Amen Corner. So that's how we spent about two hours this afternoon. We followed, we picked up the Speed Group at 9. walked around 10, tracked that group, 10, 11, made it over to A Men Corner in time to watch Phil on 12. We watched DJ's T-ball on 12, wrapped around to 13, watched a little of the play on 13, cut under to 15, watched a few approaches on 15. And so he got to see the entirety of A-Men Corner at a beautiful time of day. So, he, you know, mission accomplished.

Beautiful, beautiful. Okay, now, we sweet. have to go back to the par three contest. I need to know where you were for two things. Let's get the ugly one out of the way. Today's better athletes, today's amazing athletes in golf, Tony Fee now. Did you have any idea what was going on with his hole in one and then his, we can laugh now because he shot 68 in the first round of the Masters, but he did have an MRI last night. Were you aware of what happened? Well, not

live in the moment. I think either I was in a portion of the par three where I was too far away to understand what it happened or we were already, we'd already sort of departed. Here's the story You know. Wait, does that mean does that mean you weren't there for Jack's

grandson's ace? I was definitely not there for Jack's grandson's ace. We were already gone by that. We couldn't stick around. I've been there all day. Yeah. It's a fair I know. I know. A fair request. I'm interested in the backstory. You know, you're not allowed to have your phone. You're off the grid when you're at the Masters. Yeah. So I hadn't had a chance to catch up. It appears that Fienow has some kind of elastic ligaments in his ankle. What's the backstory? Did he talk about, you know, being able to pop that dislocated sucker right back in place? Did he talk about that today? He did a little bit. He has sprained the other ankle, he said,

but he really didn't go into the, the gory details of the popping back in in the way that, well, maybe somebody explained it probably would not be best anyway. But it was, he was, he was great about it. He said, you know, that's going to be really awful to watch. But it's made all the bit better by 68. He didn't have to withdraw. But it is, it is going to. going to join the the pantheon of of freak sports injuries it's really an all-timer frankly well

anyway all is well great round by him and and um just awesome and uh so pretty cool so speaking of all timers and great rounds we got to see eldrick tiger woods on the grounds of augusta national golf club playing competitive golf in the master tournament, Jeff Shackleford. Yeah. Now, I watched a little bit of it. Okay, interesting, just like old time. So let's talk about that. What do you mean?

He blew it, we blew away left on number one, of course. But he made a nice bar, and that's just kind of his thing. He's 15 over on his career on number one. So he will do that on number one. And he did, that two putt there was unbelievable. The whole locations were very tough in round one. And then I think the cool weather in the morning is kind of why we saw such better scoring in the afternoon. It took a little while to warm up.

But no, he played really nicely. It was one of those where it was the kind of round we've discussed kind of leaning up to the Masters, where he just is very good here and knows it and loves it. And he's able to eke out of 73 on a day that are probably a lot of other players. That would have been a 76 or 77. So Jordan's playing the afternoon, obviously puts him pretty far back. And if Jordan goes out early like he did in 2015, you know, he went late early then and had the thing pretty much over by about noon that day.

So anyway, long way to go. But no, everybody who watched who could see it, which was nobody in the crowd. But in the parts we watched on television, he had plenty of decent moments, but played the par five's horrifically, and he's going to have to improve that very quickly. So I haven't had any chance at all to investigate the data associated with his round. What did he shoot on the par fives? Well, it was really more the way he just didn't give himself even a chance,

really, at a realistic birdie. Number 80, he hit a beautiful T-shot, and he gave it up this low hook with a twirl finish that you thought, oh, this is going to be sweet, and it was way short of the green. know I don't know what happened there because he he looked at it like he liked it. And then 13 and 15, he was just botching, botching all over the place. And it was not pretty. So anyway, that has been an issue in the comeback. He needs to work on that.

And it was it the T-ball that was the issue? Or just sloppiness? Both. Yeah. T-ball placement. Yeah. So, just not, not sharp on those holes. I can tell you from being live on.

on the grounds. Now, I watched him play seven, and I watched that drive on eight that he crushed, that it got one of the louder cheers in the early part of the day on that portion of the golf course. And, you know, the pent up excitement for, for Tiger is so palpable. And everybody is so encouraging. Even, even as he walks up, approached each green, the sort of standing applause, standing sitting applause. Yeah. You know, it was such a like a very encouraging,

nurturing kind of environment, even when he was, you know, sloppy. I will say your observation earlier about where the pins were, I watched quite a bit of seven. Seven was death today. I mean, I watched guys. That plate is the hardest fall on the course. Well, I understand why.

Where that pin was, there was about a three foot square, you know, a zone where you could drop a shot. And in fact, Mark Leishman is the only one that I saw hit it into that zone. And he's the only one that I observed make birdie on the hole. But anything above the hole was dead. You couldn't, nobody make the putt. And where the pin was, anything to the left of the hole,

even if it was six inches left, rolled all the way down at the bottom. It's a problem that a lot of players who have wanted to be constructive critical have for years been saying that whole changing that into such a tight hard par for it you know the ebb and flow of the course has changed a little bit especially to front nine and to have that play 4.3 something 5 I believe in rank number one that whole occasion was just insanity and really not a lot of fun on a green where obviously they're going to save the ones that are that are fun with the ball feeding and stuff I assume for for probably the weekend but it was a little bit of a rally. killer out there. And it's, it's because it is a great place to sit. If you come to the masters, that's a, that's an awesome little intersection there as you saw today. It's lovely. I want to, I want to ask you another question about Tiger before we move on. How was the putting? Because I, again, I haven't had any chance to look at it. Puddy was good. Yeah. Pudding was good. He burned the edge on seven. Yeah. No, putting's excellent.

He, uh, and as you said, the vibes out there were very positive. I went out to 16 and stood in the grandstand at the T. And it was so fun when he was. He came up to the tea, the encouragement, the tipping of the cap, the smile in his face was genuine. And then he had a great moment on that tea shot. I don't know if you guys could see it from the tea, but he pushed it out to the right. And he kind of gave it the, he was mad. He thought it was going to stay up on the slope. And he started to kind of look at Joe La Cava and say something and get right to hand in the club.

And then you guys up at the green were making the noise. And he looked up and then he kind of gave a grin like, oops, I guess I kind of kind of gave up on that one a little early and obviously it fed down on the whole beautiful and he made the birdie putt. Can you believe how steep and severe that green is house? Every time I walk by it, I walked by the walkway to the left thinking I might see you guys and because I knew you said you were going to go down there. And then I look over to the green and I just think, people have no concept of how ridiculously difficult that green is. I don't know there is. I don't understand how you set it up. The 16th green. It's just diabolical. So this is the curious thing that we observed,

and I was great to sit there with Bill and his dad, Dr. Bill, and watch over the course of the day, the character of the green changed in a manner such that balls that came in from the right. And there was clearly a strategy for guys to try and catch the ridge to the right. So the right side of the green is elevated compared to where the pin was. on the left side. Right. Early in the day, many guys were successful in throwing the ball either to the front of the green

and using that right, um, you know, bend to kind of, uh, bring it around to the left pin or just throwing it up top there and then having it go ahead and fall down. As the day went on,

the temperature dropped a little bit and, you know, the natural phenomena of the, of the grass, uh, changing, the grain changing a little bit. Several balls got stuck up on that.

side such that we got to watch a bunch of guys doing putts with their backs to the hole. So Adam Scott had a put with his back to the hole. Rory McElroy had a put with his back to the hole. And Louis Eustazen, who in the moment we're sitting there watching him was grinding, grinding, grinding, grinding. And you were under our breath watching this like, good Jesus, Louis, hurry up and hit the ball. And then he made a spectacular, you know, roller coaster put from that, you know, that right side of the green where, it seemed like it was impossible to get it within even 12 feet. Yeah.

It's just an amazing green. Now, speaking of diabolical and difficult, could you see the 15th green or could you hear the Sergio Roy McAvoy debacle? We heard. Now, it's interesting that you mentioned Roy, because I'm not aware of what happened with Roy. No, no, no. Roy McAvoy.

That would be Kevin Costner and tin cup. You were tin cupping it. Slight difference. It seems very unfair. I haven't seen the clip yet, but what I was told is that he kept hitting shots pin high and having him spin back. Now, I want to give you a quick shout out. I want to give credit where credit is due on our Tuesday walkabout at 4.45 in the afternoon. It was actually a little later by the time we made it over there, maybe 530 with Dr. Bill, with our pal Adam Rappaport.

We're surveying the scene at 15. and we watch Coacher and Gary Woodland over there practicing, and you say to me, huh, that's interesting. And I say, what are you talking about? And you say, well, it looks like they shaved the front of the green of 15 such that it's going to be really hard to keep balls on that land anywhere below the pin in the middle of the green. And I said, do you think that's deliberate?

You know, are they wanting to make this slightly more penal? And you're like, I think that's what's going on. on here. And it looks, it sounds like, um, you were right. Yeah, that was one of those. I'm, kind of kicking myself because we had that moment and you saw how Kutcher was analyzing it. And I, what I saw was that, so the bank is always mown tight. And then there's that kind of thicker second cut rough around the lake, the pond on 15. And in, in recent years, more balls have been staying on that. And, and that was what I noticed was they had shaved that tight. And I should, a really great golf writer would have gone into his editor and said,

oh, I have a little note about 15. It looks a little different than it has in the last few years. And I didn't. So naturally, when that happened with Sergio, I was sitting out there in that grandstand on 16 up in the last row where the press can sit and watching each ball. And it was surreal because we were at the side. And the crowd had seen Mark Leashman and the group of four to it and seen a few others. And so they knew the, the patrons knew, the, the patrons knew, the minute the ball had any momentum going past the hole, it was a goner. And because of that element of the lake, and that was, that's a change to keep an eye on. I wrote an item for golf week now after it kind of wrap you up the day.

That's going to be something that's very crucial to watch going into the weekend that that lake's just a little bit more in play. I mean, that green is already so tricky and so difficult. But it was, it was sad. Yeah, after the round, he just said, I felt like I know. never hit a bad shot. But you do have to wonder why after about the third one or the second one that he wasn't just throwing a well past the hole to take a seven, or excuse me, to take eight or nine as opposed to 13. But he didn't. And he is going to have to shoot about 62 tomorrow to make the cut. Yeah. Well, let's let's talk about guys who are going to make the cut.

And, you know, wait, now, I want to know a little bit more about kind of your day. What did you guys eat. I know you've got a house of carbs. I don't want to spoil too much with your crossover show with Rapaport. And I know nothing about what you did with your master's food, but I am looking forward to that. But I've got to know a little bit. I mean, did you guys start drinking some beer? Was it pommino cheese? I mean, give us just a little hint of what you guys did sitting there in the shade on this beautiful day. We tried to fill in some blanks because we really went heavy on the food during the Wednesday session. We tried a wide variety of services offerings. And what we really, two wonderful revelations for my good pal, Bill Simmons. One, we were not able late in the day yesterday to procure the pulled pork barbecue. We cured that infirmity today.

Believe me, the pulled pork barbecue, there might have been one at about 1030 this morning. And of course, the Texas peat hot sauce had to be a part of that. That was a wonderful, you know, introduction to the day. And one of the other things that we had a great time with, and this was a new thing for Bill Simmons as well, he's not had the southern tradition of southern sweet tea. So he purchased for himself a southern sweet tea, took a couple of steps in the line.

And he's like, you know what? I think I want a little lemonade as well. he concocted his own sweet tea Arnold Palmer and found a ratio that I have to confess was quite lovely. Now, the lemonade at the Masters, as you would expect, is perfect. Not too sweet. So the sugar in the sweet tea was like the perfect dose of sugar into that lemonade. And I would say ratio-wise, it was probably like four-fifths lemonade. one-fifth sweet tea because the sweet tea is potent, let there be no doubt.

But that was one hell of an Arnold Palmer at about, you know, 1-15 today. That was something we could enjoy through the balance of the afternoon. So those are the two highlights. Well, and of course, you were there. I don't know if you overheard it, but the day before when we stopped in and I got my Arnold Palmer and they put the lemon in, which is a nice touch, the slice of lemon. And there was a gentleman visiting from Ireland who asked what an Arnold Palmer was. And I nearly passed out, as did the concessionaires.

But they kindly explained exactly what it was. That's a question you don't hear. I asked that the Masters very often. Well, this is the thing I was reminded of being out among the patrons today. The Masters draws so many sports fans, casual fans of golf, but lovers of sport and lovers of the Master's. competition. I heard a lot of things today that were curious to me as a, as a fan of the game and kind of invested in the game. I mean, not anything that that's offensive, but, you know,

somebody was surprised that Tiger wasn't playing a titleless golf ball. A tiger hasn't played a title of golf ball in, in how long? Decade. How long has it been? 15 years? Quite a, quite a while. Quite a while. That's all. But that's fine. Because, you know, everybody is there enjoying the beautiful tournament and beautiful day, and they were rooting for their favorites. And that's the great thing about the masters, all walks of life. I mean,

there was many, many instances walking around the grounds where people, is it 15 this way? Which way? What about eight? Is eight back that way? You know, that kind of conversation.

That's great. That's what the tournament's all about. Yeah. And then you have the people who know where they're going and know all the ins and outs, and that's kind of fun too. By the way, quick, before we leave that, Sergio topic, a nice shout out to Henry Haber,

who just tweeted me while we were talking, that he's very pleased he took the over on the, the over under highest, or excuse me, largest score on a whole, which was, I believe, eight. And, yeah, we discussed that on the preview show, House. Do you remember that? Seems like a month ago. I'm faintly recalling it.

And I can tell you forgot. Anyway, all right. So what do you want to talk about from today, since we, you were kind of, you know, the one thing that really is starting to become a concern at the Masters is when you're out there as a fan is you just, you only know what is going on before your eyes with the scoreboard and the group on the whole that you're on. And they'd get those scores down pretty fast a minute they all haul out. So I got to be a little bit more in touch coming into the press center and seeing everything that was going on and having a leaderboard all day. What do you want to know, House? What about the day?

So among the leaders, the names that jumped off and the, you know, I'm interested in the caliber of play of a handful of guys. Stenson, who I've been, you know, sort of touting a little bit. And I was very, very happy to see him. There was only two players. We watched probably 35, 40, maybe more than that, T-balls on 17. Only two guys hit three wood. One was Doc Redmond and the other was Henrik Stenton. and Henrik, of course, killed it. But what was the thing that seemed to click with him? What had him in good form today? Oh, I'm sorry. I watched very little Stenson. I'm sorry. So you asked me what am I want to know,

and I just tell you what I want to know. Well, I never, I just didn't pay much attention to his round. It was a quiet four under, huh? He was up there, so I'm sorry. What we're saying is a quiet four under. That's fine. This is what I want. I want him under.

the radar. I want him quietly building confidence through the week. He putted very well. He burned the edge on a 17 on a put that was very, very makeable that could have easily had him at 5 under. But there are a couple... He did bogey 18. That's about all I saw. But it's still, three under's good. Now, there are a couple stats house that I'd like you to think about and just to kind of keep in mind when you look at the leaderboard tonight because the number of... are very much in favor of certain people. Obviously, Jordan Speeth as our leader is the number one man out there and has led nine of the 17 rounds. He's played in the Masters now, which is kind of an astounding thing.

A certain guy named Tiger had a similar stat, and that puts him an amazing company. But when you look at the leaderboard, you look at somebody like Stenson at 3, Coutcher and Fienau at 4. And then there's another nice group, Adam Hadwin Hoffman, Patrick Reed at three, Houtung Lee, Roy McElroy, Raffa Cabaret Bayo, Viseberger, Jack Johnson, Leachman. Anyway, VJ Singh is in the group at one under. We have some pretty telling stats on this. Now, they're all riding hard, the Justin Ray stat, I think, that was tweeted a little while ago. Jim Nance repeated, of course, the last 12 champions were under par, and they were all in the top 10.

at the end of the first day. And right now we have nine of the top 25 in the world inside the top 10. But House, here's the one that's kind of interesting. 19, the last 21 winners of the Masters were within five of the first round lead. And Speeth kept with that bogey, he made a great bogey on 18,

and that kept 19 people within five for that stat. But of course, the only wrinkle in all this house is that speeds, strokes gain putting stat was incredible today. I think he ended up fourth in the field, and he came in, and I sat in his press conference, and he was glowing about the putting, and he really said it with the ball striking was pretty poor. He had 11 of 18 greens, 11 of 14 fairways,

but he wasn't happy at all the way he drove it. And he used three-wood a lot, which I think was interesting. I saw a lot of three-woods today, which was fascinating, although on 13, all the bombers were just hitting in places that were unbelievable. Anyway, so those are, are some stats. So keep that in mind if you're doing a little wagering going forward. Well, I'm looking at the top 10 here. And there are many names that that fit the profile that have the pedigree that we've talked about. I'm excited because of the, you know, I mentioned

it as a sentimental thing a little bit. Cooch. I love to see Cooch there at that 400 that he got hot from 13 and, you know, finished off. A finish. Yeah, I mean, birdied 18. Is he the only one that birdied 18 today? I'm looking right now. Zach Johnson. No, it's mostly bogey. Yeah, yeah. I know.

I mean, yes, you're right, Zach. Yeah. 18 and 7. Speaking of wagering, as you were sitting there with the fellow patrons, was there any group to group action out there, or is it a pretty, was it a kind of quiet, just enjoying the scene and the food and the beauty and the good shots? There was rampant gambling. There was how you're standing there waiting for people to come through or you're sitting.

So when I was up at seven, there was a group of guys, maybe four or five guys. They were doing five dollar bets on miss make, you know, on the putts. And the guy choosing whoever had miss was very often, very happy to get that choice. and then we our own selves had a little game going down on seven at 16 we chose a golfer in the T-box and then whoever you know finished with the best score that player we rotated first choice so that was a fun game that was a great game yeah yeah so yeah it was really everywhere I went there were games going on anywhere I lingered and it was near like a group of guys the dollars were flown I mean you could you can everybody's trying to get some action your uh you we've talked a lot about the fan situation in recent weeks. And I have to be honest, I know I'm an old fuddy day, but I just love being out there, even though it was fairly quiet.

I'd love to know a little bit more of what's going on. And I say quiet. It's just there's just not a lot of noise out there until there's a roar. And you forget how much sort of noise there is at a normal golf tournament, just vehicles and things, you know, crashing sounds and people talking loudly and kind of disregarding the action at the masters, everybody's a little better behaved. And so there's just the silence out there is beautiful, though,

because then when you do hear the roar, it's amazing. But I'm curious what your friends, your guests, the Simmons and Adam Rappaport and everybody, their takeaway of kind of the vibe of the masters. In the context of this discussion we've been having about golf needing to loosen up a little bit. Well, I obviously, those are folks who don't have a lot of experience attending golf tournaments.

They don't have anything to compare it to and to your sort of weekly, you know, whatever locale, Baba buoy, mashed potatoes, getting the hole as soon as somebody's struck the ball. And none of that, none of that is prevalent at the Masters. In fact, the level of respect when guys, it got so eerily quiet when Tiger was putting on 16. Now, you're there. That's cool. The old legend of them piping in the bird sounds through speakers up in the trees, whether.
