Starting point is 00:02:43 Greetings House from Karnoosti. It's been a beautiful, wacky, crazy, standard day at the British Open, I think, the Open Championship, excuse me. I got used to the highway signs here. They all say British Open. They're not on brand. How are you?
Starting point is 00:02:58 Did you get to see much of this excitement today? It was a good, zany first day. It's why we have a pop-up in the Open Championship and the majors. It was very, speaking of on-brand, it was a very on-brand opening day for the Open Championship. But I'm flummoxed by this. How can they possibly chastise the rest of the world? Who are these standard bears for the Open championship when the signs say the British Open? Not on course.
Starting point is 00:03:25 No, no, not on property. You're there. You're in Scotland and you're driving down the street and it says British Open. Well, and the hilarious thing. just before we get to this incredible first round is the RNA is very serious about everybody calling at the open to the point where media forms and signing your life away things say something about using the open. The irony is that we're in Scotland. So to call it the British Open in Scotland is always a little bit weird. And then if you watch some of the old films, really old films, they call it the British Open.
Starting point is 00:03:55 So it's one of those things. The AP is just ignoring it, Golf Week, where I have been writing, I always turn. it says the Open, then I go back and I read what I wrote, and they've changed it to the British Open. So it's one of those things. It is the Open. But either way, we know what we're talking about. It is fast. It's firm. It's crazy. And I think for the most part, it did what we expected it to do today. I was a little surprised at how well Rory McElroy, who doesn't like these conditions played. I was fascinated by John Rom's good play. I bet against both of them. So as you know, I'm getting that out of the way right off the top. But ROM's aggressive approach to the course worked.
Starting point is 00:04:34 And that's what really was what developed as the week went on. We weren't sure which strategy would work. And it looks like aggressive from what I've seen. And I can tell you some firsthand details of what Jordan speak to today. Aggressive, for the most part, really worked. Well, I want to start with His Royal Highness, Eldrick Tiger Woods, who is on the course as we speak. He just bogeed 14 to fall back to even.
Starting point is 00:04:59 and I was holding my breath watching the front nine because it felt like a front nine where he could have shot 30. I mean, he was burning edges left and right. And I really thought it was setting up for, and he still has a chance over the last three or four holes here. If he can sneak in even one birdie and finish it one under. He is extremely in the mix, but I like him better at two under. Oh, well, sure. I'm going to counter that even if he's at one over, it's not too bad. The wind finally did pick up today.
Starting point is 00:05:37 The Greens are, the Dustin Johnson hit a couple of puts I saw. I don't know what he's got going on with the way he's rolling the ball, but he hit a couple that just went airborne. Greens are definitely a little bumpy in the afternoon, but they did get some breeze. It wasn't quite what they predicted, so the bias of morning late isn't that strong. but it definitely, I just was listening to an interview with Martin Kimer, and he said, even PAR this afternoon is really good. It is very tough out there. This morning, the course was totally getable. And Speath, even after his one over par round, felt like he did not give away the tournament. He said it was definitely a round of missed opportunities. He wasn't pleased,
Starting point is 00:06:17 but he also felt like, well, there's a couple things in the forecast that suggest there's a long way to go. So I think if Tiger gets this thing in, he'll be just fine. He looks good other than this thing he's got on his neck that he apparently, he brings his own pillow, but he still had a bad night's sleep kind of situation. So I don't know if he's going to blame a British mattress or say that quickly about 10 times. Blame a British mattress. Well, if he needs a massage, I'm available. Let's check.
Starting point is 00:06:46 Just let him know. If he needs a massage, I'll come right over. I'm sure he's gotten plenty of neck massages. He hid this thing pretty well, but he definitely showed up the first two with the support beams on the back of the neck. But he's looked good. I mean, again, you watch him go down and pick up the ball. He looks, the flexibility looks great.
Starting point is 00:07:04 So he did bogey house, by the way, it was 15, not 14. Oh, he bogeed 15. My bad. Which is the hole where Speeth went bad. So I'll just give you a quick thing on Spee's round because I got a sign for that. Let's talk about that. I'll tell you what, he looks really good house. And he actually said it afterwards.
Starting point is 00:07:21 It was a clean round of golf. which is probably hard to believe to people if they see that he played the last four holes, four over par. But he looked a little more like the guy that we've seen before, which is, he was energetic, kind of a little bit of the frenetic thing, but nothing like he's been very calm and very focused on strategizing. But the thing is, he played very conservative house, and it finally got him at 15. He just laid way too far back, hit a bad second shot into a bunker that's 30 yards short of the green and had to go out sideways and made double and bad shot on 16 and then he hit it in the water on 17. But he went the conservative approach. And it'll be interesting to see if he adjusts in his attack seeing some of the guys on the leaderboard and what they did.
Starting point is 00:08:14 Now, Kevin Kisner, our leader at 5 under, who, I mean, he made 22 pusser. today total and I think he made about 100 feet of putts on the last three holes from I was listening on the radio so I didn't see it I was out on the course with the radio but and so Kiz was not exactly he's a he's not a bomber trying to overpower the course but great round of golf for him and sensational stuff but I it's going to be interesting to see what Tiger had all day to watch this but what he and Spieth and a few other people do you know Rory pretty predicted that they'll, people will probably start out this way. And then they'll just, they'll just go, oh, screw it. I'll start hitting the driver all day on the weekends. So that's fine.
Starting point is 00:09:00 I love this, though, about this tournament this week. Well, and look how it's, look how the leaderboard is populated. Kiz, not known for, for distance first at five under. Our boy, Tony Fee now, right behind him, four under. Now, I don't know if Tony hit driver, he hits, he can hit his three iron, and 300 yards. So he, you know, for him. Speak said after his five iron is going 250 and downwind,
Starting point is 00:09:27 it could roll out to as much as 300 yards. Wrap your head around that. We saw all the guys on which holes the 252 yard par three. Is that 16? 16, yes. There were four irons and five irons. I mean, yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:42 The wind's not helping much there. And that green is a two-tier green. So they're trying to, Justin Rose tried to play a. beautiful shot there. A few guys there were there just trying to hit it and get it to roll up this big two-tier green. That hole's playing the hardest on the golf course today. The last three holes are going one, three and four, or one, four, and three in terms of difficulty. So the stretching stretch is brutal, as always, even with not a big strong wind.
Starting point is 00:10:09 So you can only imagine when if we get the wind up and these fairways that are like, they really are concrete like, those holes are just going to be zany on. the weekend. But it's, it's, I love it. I think it's fantastic. I'm curious what you think, you know, how's it looking on television? What do you, what do you think people are viewing this Open Championship as? Yeah, I mean, we're kind of easing into it.
Starting point is 00:10:32 And the reactions so far, you know, in terms of early, are a little bit of surprise that the early guys, there wasn't another low round to go along with kids. Yeah, me too. It felt like a 64 was possible. Well, let me tell you why it wasn't and why I feel bad because I told you there was going to be good scoring and you put out on the Twitter that you would like the under 63-5. Tiger Part 16. They gave us the final round hole locations today. I was looking at the whole location sheet and it was like, okay, yeah, these look tough.
Starting point is 00:11:15 And then you get out there. And there's a couple that were like 16 back and five from the right. Well, they were really about two and a half from the edge. They were jammed in corners. They were on spots. This would have been a good place for Deschambo to use his protractor. His protractor. Yeah, we need to talk about that, by the way.
Starting point is 00:11:33 But they definitely got, I think they switched them around a little bit and moved some difficult halls to today, knowing what the weather was like. Then also the, we've got some rain coming, probably some. some more wind tomorrow. And then Sunday, the wind forecast is starting to get to where it's more substantial. I don't think it's anything, you know, calamitous where we're not going to be able to play or something. But it's definitely getting stronger. So I have a feeling they do a great job here with the setup. And they just probably decide, well, we're going to get a few more of those really tough ones out of the way on a day that's going to be pretty basic in terms of weather.
Starting point is 00:12:12 And I think all in all that was good. But unfortunately, definitely. put a dent from our perspective on the gambling side. Now, you know, I had some brief thrills here with Danny Willett and Brandon Stone, both making charges at the low first round. And I had them both at one at 100 to 1 and 1 at 125 to 1 for low opening rounds. So I got my money's my three pounds worth out of each of those bets as they made a run. And then, of course, those final holes just got them. It was pleasing.
Starting point is 00:12:49 I'm interested. I think we should take a quick break, but I do want to talk about the guys that are on the other side of this. I love seeing Willett and Stone, you know, both of those guys in form. Stone, I snuck on to a roster late last night.
Starting point is 00:13:06 I think I even put him into one of my top 20 bets on my own sheet. Just because you guys, a guy who shoots 60 four days ago. Yeah. You know, I just kind of like under conditions that are similar enough to this, they're not identical conditions, but similar enough to where, you know, there's that muscle memory could not have possibly completely abandoned Brandon Stone. And he played quite well today. That three under, that's another one that could have been a five under with the way he was striking the ball. But let's take a quick break because I want to talk about Dustin Johnson.
Starting point is 00:13:42 And I want to talk about Sergio Garcia. Okay, yeah. And, well, of course, as you know, Shackhouse is brought to you by Calloway. And I want to say a few things about Calloway Media Production South. They've had a good run. For those looking to get in the mood for the Senior Open next week, I was up at St. Andrews last night to name drop a little. And they're setting the buildup up for the Senior Open. Not quite the Open Championship build out in terms of tense. But Tom Watson will be playing next week. Very exciting thing to have him coming back to the Open Championship. And he was on Calloway Live. recently. It's on the YouTube. Check it out. Great episode with Harry Arnett talking with Tom Watson on Callaway Live. Also, The Ship Show, make sure to check out. Dylan Meyer has joined Callaway in an excellent discussion with him. And House, did you get to see the playing through ad today? I missed it. I didn't see it. I didn't see it. No. NBC's got the playing through ads where the golf stays on the left. And they crafted a very cool ad. Well, I don't want to spoil it then. So keep an eye out. It was done by the media production.
Starting point is 00:14:44 team there at Callaway, our good friends, awesome work. Phil, Phil has an acting career and after the last few weeks, that's a good thing. Okay. So he did a great job with it. It's a killer ad. Anyway. My friends, also a quick thanks to our friends from Bombas, the most comfortable socks in the history of feet. After two years of research and development, Bomb Boss has re-engineered socks with innovations
Starting point is 00:15:12 to make them way more comfortable. The Honeycomb Arch Support System, for instance, provides extra support where you need it most. That is at the bottom of my dogs and right up the arch. They have stay-up technology as well that ensures the stock stay in place and don't leave ugly ring marks around your calves and the super soft cotton material.
Starting point is 00:15:35 And I can vouch for this shack. It's keeping you warm in the winter but cool in the summer. I have been wearing these bombos socks. every round that I've played so far this year, and that is a sizable number. I've been lucky, fortunate to be out on the golf course. These things have been crucial to keeping me out on the course fresh. I'm coming down the stretch. I can't blame tired feet for my middling performances on the final holes.
Starting point is 00:16:03 There are other things to blame. Better yet, my friends, Bomas donates one pair of socks for every pair they sell. so far they have donated over 7 million pairs. And now, Shackhouse listeners can get 20% off of first order from bonbust.com. Just go to bonbus.com slash house, h-o-us-us-e, and use the code house. That's b-o-m-b-a-s.com slash house and use the code house to get 20% off your first order. I highly, highly, highly recommend these socks. There you go.
Starting point is 00:16:42 Okay, Shaq. So let's talk about the disaster that a couple of these guys that we sort of forecasted potentially faring better. Now, you were not as bullish on Sergio as I was. And I just used the term muscle memory. I just felt like I know Sergio has been a little scratchy this season, but I liked his performances abroad over the last month. and I thought that whatever hangover, whatever daddy hangover he might have been experiencing, he was working out of his system.
Starting point is 00:17:16 And I thought just seeing Karnoosti and revisiting it and being on the grounds that that would have sort of a palliative effect. And instead, he is presently five over. Let's see here. Yeah, through 16 holes. Yeah, not a good week. Dustin Johnson, more tragic,
Starting point is 00:17:36 considering he was a pre-tournament favorite at five over with a triple in the last hole. But, you know, again, I think we, the afternoon, I mean, Sergio hit it in the burn on 10. I'm pretty sure that was his T-shot and just, it's just playing, it's playing so insanely fast. I mean, the fairways, they stump them at 9, they're probably pushing 10 by today. I mean, it baked hard today. It was warm early and it baked out. And it is, it is just, I mean, the 17th Hall House is just mind-boggling. on what you do there off the tea.
Starting point is 00:18:09 I watched Justin Rose just bomb it over the burn, but that's a bold play. It is just a, you know, it's such a tricky balance out there between aggressive and kind of plotting around. And it's why we couldn't, why guys were struggling with like what's going to be the strategy. But I think it's beautiful to watch.
Starting point is 00:18:28 I think it's fascinating. And it's still rewarding good play for the most part. Yeah, that'd be the interesting. I don't know how many people out they're watching, look at this and go, well, this is goofy. This isn't right. Jordan Speeat's quite a few. Jordan Speath said after his round that it's the first time he can recall
Starting point is 00:18:48 standing on the tee of each hole day to day and being at an utter loss over what the correct club to draw, the collect strategy, the correct line because of this variable of, you know, the speed of the fairways. And I also, there was some indication that the wind changed a little bit from what the guys were seeing earlier this week. Yeah, besides picking up, it did change in a direction a little more from the east, which is, it makes, of course, well, as I say that, I look up with the screen and I don't think the flags are blowing from that direction. So the point is, it's moved around quite a bit. And the morning guys had a pretty steady, well, I had very little, and then whatever they had was from the same direction. And really, if you want to annoy tour players, changing wind directions is a great way to get in their heads.
Starting point is 00:19:42 Because not much bothers them, but that does. That's the segue. That's what I want to ask you. This is what I'm curious about. These guys at five, Sergio, Dustin, there's a couple other guys of some pedigree down here at the bottom. We can't write them off yet because you mentioned the rain on it. its way overnight. Is it going to be raining when they're, during while they play?
Starting point is 00:20:11 They may get rain on and they're around, which isn't, which isn't ideal. But the, you know, a little bit of softening in the morning. If it's not a rain that has a lot of wind is a really hardcore storm, which it doesn't sound like it is. Yeah, it could help them in the morning is, I think, what you're getting at and softening things up. Personally, though, I'm sticking with, uh, morning late bias in this tournament.
Starting point is 00:20:37 I mean, that's kind of how I wagered last night with my first round leader bets. And that was the main thing I went and did were first round. I just think those odds were so much fun that it was cool to do. And I kind of had a big early bias thing. So we'll see. I mean, it's the open. It can be nutty.
Starting point is 00:20:54 But right now, the way these guys are kind of struggling in the afternoon late, I mean, nobody's going low. So it's been a tough, tough test today. Basically it's kind of what we thought. thought it would be other than I think those
Starting point is 00:21:06 few surprises of of Rory and Rom playing as well as they did. But again, they went out early and they hit, gosh, they hit some beautiful shots and beautiful puts. You know, Rory, by the way, is in a little bit of a man spat with Butch Harmon.
Starting point is 00:21:22 It'll be interesting to see if he's using this to his motivation or if he's oblivious to it. I'm not sure, but yeah, they're having a little, butch said some things on Sky and Rory got asked about it and he basically he was a little chippy about it. But I think a little chippy might be good for Rory.
Starting point is 00:21:40 I might be good to get in a man's spat with Butch. I think that's kind of something that feels like it's been lacking from his game is a little fire. Well, I will say I played Rory. Did you? At the end of the night last night when I did a final betting sheet, and after I'd already given out the bets, I would have, you'd had a few drinks? Well, he, at 20, I think I got him at over 20 to 1.
Starting point is 00:22:09 Okay. And for that, that pedigree, it just started to feel like too much value. I can't sit in, and, you know, I almost had the same sentiment with Jordan Speath, but his issues strike me as more mental and more prominent than Rory's. Rory's is more like an indifference. but I think this tournament at this venue catches enough of its intention. And you expressed skepticism. I liked Rom. I was about to give him out on the Twitter, and I didn't because you kind of.
Starting point is 00:22:44 Well, it was his strategy. I didn't think the bombing, just bomb and gouge, screw it approach. That was the only reason I wasn't bullish on Rom. That was strictly the reason. And it appears to have worked. Well, he didn't find himself. He made a little mojo too. He missed fairways.
Starting point is 00:23:01 Oh, yeah. You know, it didn't cost him. No, well, he was well down the holes and the holes where you can do that. Now, there are a few holes where you just can't bomb and gouge. There's a burn or something in the way and you can't do it. But yeah, and I think that somebody like him, if he's hitting it well enough, it gives him a little pep in his step. And it did. So good for him.
Starting point is 00:23:25 Yeah, he was under 50% on Fairway's hit. And really, you know, speeds round was out. outstanding, except that I think what we learned is you have to pick and choose where to be aggressive, which was kind of what most people conclude would be the case. And Speeth just stayed so conservative, and it wore him down. He just got to a point where he was hitting some long, long clubs into holes, and it just kind of unraveled. But House, his game looks really good. The putting look really good. I'm kind of in a weird way, still bullish on him because I think he could, I think he could throw a 65 out there the way he's playing.
Starting point is 00:24:03 Oh, I like to see. And the way he likes, the way he likes Lynx golf, he just seemed very confident after that. It was a different person than we've seen the last few weeks. And the mojo on the course was just different. So we'll see. But, I mean, there's a lot going. I mean, you got sunk on there. You got Pat Perez.
Starting point is 00:24:19 Come on. Okay, yeah. Come on. Come on. Brandon Steel. A lot of classy guys. Justin Thomas at 200. And he was four under for quite a bit of that.
Starting point is 00:24:28 Yeah, very good round. A guy who hasn't done a great job across the ocean. Wow. And in the afternoon way, I mean, he may, you know, that's going to look like one of the better afternoon rounds. Yeah, he's going to have low round of the afternoon, I bet. It's going to be close. Yeah, I'm looking right now. It's got a shot.
Starting point is 00:24:46 So House, I got to do one humble brag. I broke a little story on golf week about an hour ago. They will be banning the green reading books or they will be. We use the word severely restricted. They're going to be taking away some of the tools in these green reading books that the players have been using on the greens. And they've made this decision and they're going to announce it in a couple of weeks. But we at Golf Week have some of the details. We don't know the ways in which they're going to take these out of the player's hands.
Starting point is 00:25:21 So check that out at Golfweek.com. So Bryson, when he pulls out his compass in practice because he can't do it in terms. tournament play. It won't be on today's green reading books. I mean, that seems fair. If you're going to rule out one of the most fundamental tools of man, of humankind, not mankind, then you ought to rule out the highly sophisticated, you know, computer generated, 3D, digitally enhanced, you know, books that these guys walk around with. It seems all only fair. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And there are a lot of elements. It's a skill discussion. It's a pace of play thing.
Starting point is 00:26:00 It's a, you know, getting the whole location the night before and putting it in and God knows what they do with it. I don't, it's intense. By the way, House, breaking news. Brooks Kepka just shot 31 on the back nine to finish one over. Now, the, the odds. I want you to know. The odds checker folks are not, they're not falling for that one over score. They are well aware at the various betting locations.
Starting point is 00:26:28 that this was a very impressive comeback after a horrible break in a bunker. Oh, I say that. Well, he's a 50 to 1. I may have to stop at Ladbrooks on the way home. Get in there. Please do. Now, here's what I want. I want you to check the Jordan Speeth odds for me because you talk me into
Starting point is 00:26:45 Speeth. I too very much was impressed by his composure and his ball striking. And he was rolling great putts. And I missed the end of his round. I didn't see it. What I saw was the four under part of it. And it looked like, wow, this is speed time. The thing I know is the most is, you know,
Starting point is 00:27:09 he has a little forward press in his putting stroke. And it's one of those things where you put it down. And he has, you know, his method, he takes a couple of practice strokes, puts it down, boom, forward press goes. And I think I've told you we've talked to. on this show before that I've seen that where it's just a little jittery. It's not clean. And it was clean today.
Starting point is 00:27:33 And he doesn't even like these greens, by the way. He said they were boring. And he meant it in like an architectural. Yeah, he means it in a way that's kind of like he's becoming a little bit more refined in his architectural views. He didn't mean as a shot at Carnucci. I think he really likes the course. And by the way, this course is, it's just even better than I remember it. It's so good out on the ground.
Starting point is 00:27:56 I don't know how it translates the time. television, but the holes are just, there's just something neat going on on every hole. But the greens are, for a link's course, pretty boring. And so I think the fact that he's putting well, as I think he feeds off of good, interesting greens. I think Tiger does too a little bit. And so that these guys are putting pretty well. And Tiger missed some basic putts, but I think that's a very good sign for both of them.
Starting point is 00:28:22 But Kepka, you know, 33 to 1, by the way, for Speed going forward after round 1. one. Kepka is still at 50 to 1 or to 40 to 1 at Ladbrook. So the I'm going to wire you some money. Just be on the lookout. That's an impressive comeback from Brooks. I mean I said you saw I don't know if you saw
Starting point is 00:28:41 him. He could not get out of a bunker here in the round and he just shot 31 on the back night. So very impressive stuff. I watched him drive one. I saw that he'd had that that just, you know, really just a single disaster hole.
Starting point is 00:28:57 And I said to a colleague of mine, I think he can shoot 31 on the back. And I didn't know until we got on this show and you just now announced that he shot 31 on the back. He, I mean, I'm telling you, just be on the lookout. You're getting some money for me. Yeah. Now, anything else you want to get off your chest? Any thoughts on telecast, any media coverage you've seen? You know, I get a little bit locked in some stuff.
Starting point is 00:29:23 It's too early. It's too early. I'm not ready, you know, I just ease into it. I watched the replay tonight. I watched maybe an hour and a half this morning before I came in. Okay. And it's exactly, this is what makes the Open championship, the British Open, if that's okay. So wonderful. You wake up, I'm in bed, and it's this beautiful golf course that looks like it could be on another planet.
Starting point is 00:29:46 And the guys are, you know, playing a strategy and a style of golf that we never, ever see here. And it always happens. It's always in the summer. I just, it has so much good vibes. I just can't enjoy this tournament more. So I'm looking forward to watching the replay tonight and I'll pay attention to some of the broadcasts and stuff and look for the cool playing through Ed and all the rest. Well, I'm just, I'm jazzed because I, you know, this place is just zany.
Starting point is 00:30:14 It's going to be, it's going to be nuts. And I'm looking at the shots right now. I just, you know, I hope there are people out there who are watching who have an open mind because I certainly can see how people in the U.S. in particular, reared on a certain kind of golf. We haven't seen anything, I don't think, quite this brown and zany. And because this golf course, those burn holes are nuts. It just has a potential to be such incredible television over the weekend.
Starting point is 00:30:42 And hopefully the big cat and a few other interesting figures will hang in there. Because the other beauty of the open house and links is that it, It lets some old guys hang around. By the way, I took some Langer action. I didn't even look what he shot today. I was too. He shot two over. I have him at 10 to 1 at top to top 20.
Starting point is 00:31:06 Okay. I got it at 14 here in person. But I'd love to see him kind of do something. And just see that variety in a leaderboard. See names from all over the world we've never heard of. And it's very cool stuff. Absolutely. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:20 So we're going to have some fun here. We will be back. on Sunday night to talk more about this Open Championship and hopefully another fantastic finish from Karnoosti. And we've had good food this week, by the way, House. We've had some excellent finds locally. And then the weather has just been unbelievable. I mean, if it looks good on TV, just know it's twice as good in person.
