Hello, friends, and welcome to this golf program, unlike any other.
Yes, my friends, we've done it.
This is Fairway Rowland, a golf program on the Ringer Podcast Network.
And on Netflix, my birdie buddies, my par saving pals, my eagle enthusiasts.
I am your starter, Joe House, joined by our inimitable account.
Our PGA tour boots on the ground.
Nathan Hubbard.
His boots are on the ground in an undisclosed location.
He is in the company of professional golfers.
Maybe.
But we have important things to break down.
The President's Cup was retained by the United States of America due to some Sunday heroics,
the likes of which we've never seen before.
And of course, the PGA tour keeps rolling on.
along it is in Utah, we shall be a two ball. The two pegs are in the ground. Off we go.
This episode is brought to by Uber Eats. You can get almost anything delivered with Uber Eats.

on me. Tom Cruise is. Digger got us into the special. And digger's going to dig us out.
From the director of Birdman and the Revenant. What would happen if I stop doing? You starve.
You freeze to death. That's what?
With great power comes great deniability.
I'm not the earth, daddy.
Digger, see the trailer online.
Only the years October 2nd.
Nate the dog!
How's your lava rock?
They tried to make it fun on Sunday.
They try to make it fun on Saturday.
They try to make it fun on Friday.
They tried to make it fun on Thursday, House.
And this is probably the best the president can be
until there is the chosen one from some territory.
outside Europe and the U.S., right?
I mean, is this the best it can be?
Yes and no.
Yes.
Talk to me, Goose.
Yes, in the sense that, like, this was very competitive.
It was very good proof of concept.
It was an attestation to the value of this kind of competition.
It was, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
I mean, me too.
A lot of bad shitting.
It can't be on the calendar.
in September.
We just...
No.
And I think everybody knows it.
With football.
Right.
Everybody knows it.
It's cool.
I enjoyed having the single matches on.
I was go ahead.
I was multi-screening.
And it was dramatic.
And I enjoyed my Sunday.
But it's just a dumb way to live when we have other options.
Like some of the things we talked about on this very program last week, which is parking it at a
moment in the calendar when it could really own the moment.
and I don't know exactly if they forecasted the dates for the competition two years from now at Kingston Heath in Australia.
But you know what was one of the greatest President's Cups ever competed was when Tiger Woods was the effing captain.
Royal Melbourne.
And they played in Australia.
And it was in December.
And it was awesome.
It was great.
It wasn't competing.
I know that there was still football moments, but it was not up against meaningful college football on Saturday.
and it was, we got some prime time out of it anyway.
Well, we did.
Look, House, we're coming in late on this, right?
I mean, the sort of immediate takes have happened.
Yes.
I think there's a couple of storylines that come out of this President's Cup
that I want to hear you talk about.
But the most, I mean, one is, what do we do with this event?
And I think you're on the record being like, dude, just run it Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday, like, just don't compete with football.
There's nothing on then.
It's why TGL is a thing on Tuesday night.
Let's just do it.
So that's one thing, is the timing of this event and the sort of placement from a day-of-the-week perspective.
The second thing, I think, is how did the captains do?
And Jeff Ogilvie, who is a renowned golf architect who I maybe played 36 holes on a course that he designed,
courses that he designed today.
Hey now.
Is,
is, you know,
I think coming out of Sunday night,
it's now Tuesday night,
Sunday night,
Jeff Ogilvy had done a great job
in continuing the tradition of culture,
emblemen,
etc., and sort of,
you know,
bringing these guys to the forefront.
And Brandt Snedeker had done
just enough to get by.
That was the narrative coming out.
And to me,
that is the question now on Tuesday night instead of Sunday night.
Besides your betting interests, how do you think Snedds actually did?
How do you think Ogilvy actually did?
Does it fucking matter?
Is this actually on the players?
Tell us what you think.
Yeah, so I give Sneds a solid F and I give Ogilvie a solid A.
And I think we now have, we don't, you know, beyond a reasonable doubt, we don't need to debate it any longer.
It is the height of arrogance and stupidity to have young men who are playing on the goddamn PGA tour as the goddamn captains of these teams.
We went from Keegan Bradley, who played well enough in the lead up to his captaincy,
of the U.S. team going from competing against all of his peers right into the captaincy.
And here we are, a calendar year later, doing the exact same goddamn thing all over again.
They can't possibly prepare. They can't possibly go through the kind of measured, thoughtful.
It's so apparent that Brian Snedeker never sat through a goddamn snake draft before.
How is that possible?
Well, that's true.
How is that possible?
In what world it is the only thing that you need to focus on because the U.S. is so much far superior to the international side and Europe at singles than any other element of team golf because it's not team golf.
So pull that apart.
But go ahead, go ahead.
What happened is you can designate some of your players that you assign and some of your players that you assign and some.
of your players that just have to take whoever you give them, right?
And and and sneds,
Snedd's just gave Schaeffler.
He basically threw our best players to the wolves in one interpretation of this, right?
They alternate.
They,
nominating names.
They alternate names.
And so if you say you're a best player's name,
then it gives the other side the opportunity to respond,
however the other side wants to respond.
And Schaeffler got paired with,
Etchevirate.
Like they threw the guys who statistically
were playing the best this week,
including, and that is,
in some particular order,
Cam Young, it is Wyndham Clark,
it was Scotty,
and they threw those guys to the wolves.
Got her up.
Gotter up.
And they basically allowed the international team
to put the bottom of their lineup,
Bazaden Hood,
who is going to,
play the fall and try to finish better than Mark Hubbard.
Echavaria, who won an event this year, but is one of those guys who has two, three great
weeks a season and the rest of the time he's searching.
Like they allowed them to burn guys with our best players as opposed to taking on Siwu.
Now, the reason that I want to challenge you on this is we got Jackson Coyvin and Siwu Kim.
And Jackson Coyven, not unlike Scotty Schaeffler, when Scottie Shephler was not Scotty Fing Sheffler,
he was just, just off the Corn Ferry Tour, has lots of promise, but still hasn't won, Scotty Sheffler,
got put out at Whistling Straits with Rom in the first group, beat his ass, and that set the tone for that day.
We got Jackson Coyven with their best player, Siwu Kim, and Jackson Coyven down the stretch,
pulled out the Sam Cassell Big Nuts Dance and did it, didn't he?
He's a superstar.
But is that Snatterker's credit?
Is that Golf Twitter's credit for pressuring, peer-pressuring Sneds into drafting him?
How do you think about those decisions?
Well, that's the world of golf.
Are you sure?
Recognizing the special talent of Coyven.
And Coyvin arrived with a genuine resume, an international resume, of competing as a junior,
in a number of different kinds of events that was appropriate seasoning,
superior seasoning to some of his peers, including Jacob Bridgman.
Like, it's not a big secret.
You can go look up Jacob Bridgman's international match competition career
and put it side by side with Coyven.
Coyvins played a shit ton of team golf.
He just played it in the spring, very successfully,
when he won the NCAA tournament.
But we don't have to debate the case for Jackson Coyven.
What I'm saying is I heard Snedz when the Coyven, post-Min Minneapolis, when Coyven won,
I heard Snedd's start to say, hey, you know, everybody's got to earn it.
There's no, you know, and it left you and me thinking that he was going to be very under the influence,
let's just say, of the point system.
I believe in my heart of hearts that part of the reason that Sned's drafted him is because all of the golf Twitter
And the fans and everything else were like, you got to take this guy.
Now, he put him in a position, I don't think intentionally, where he went against the
International's absolute best player who was a dragon slayer all week and who, as you and I have
said, has come close to winning the entire year, not done that because he's falling a little
bit short.
I mean, if I was, by the best players on tour, by nearly every measure.
Except for the winning part.
But with an Achilles heel, whose name is Scotty Sheffler.
And if I was Snedd, I would have loved that pairing because they play together.
They know each other well.
But we got Coyven.
Do you give Snedz any credit for putting the kid in that?
Hell no.
In that situation?
No.
You think that was all random chance.
Yes.
Because they didn't have a plan because he hadn't thought it through properly.
They didn't.
I think it was pure happenstance that we got that.
It was a pure strong.
And I think, just to be clear, I think that what happened on Sunday is a foundation,
like it's not a Scotty Schaeffler-esque beating ROM thing at Whistling Straits,
but it's going to be pretty close.
Like, it gave this kid confidence.
He won those last couple holes to flip the match.
Entirely not of their own doing, I think that we created a monster on Sunday.
And the biggest story for me coming out of the President's Cup is probably what the fuck
is the U.S. doing, but the second biggest story is I think Jackson Coyven just had one of those
moments that you will never be able to take away from him and that will be part of that
steel-ass titanium foundation for an all-time great player.
Well, it would be wonderful.
You know, he's playing.
I checked this morning to make sure he hadn't withdrawn as of yet.
No, he's playing.
He's playing Utah.
He's flying from Chicago to Utah because he's going to go play.
He's going to go play.
And I think that was, you know, this is what's great about golf.
It's a real treat.
that we immediately get to see, you know, one of America's true heroes in terms of this golf
competition, immediately return to tour competition, and we'll see the way that his peers interact with him.
I mean, it's all legendary stuff. I do want to make sure that we, you know, give some time for
lessons learned. I mean, do you think that a year from now when the United States Rider Cup team,
and I expect it to look very similar to this group.
I mean, you know, we'll swap in.
I think that there's three or four names, you know,
and I'll try and be gracious about it.
I'll try and be judicious.
If Russell Henling doesn't earn it by way of points,
he's not going to be on the team.
You cannot take him.
But he might earn it by playing well.
I mean, you can't take that away from him.
He's earned it.
Fine.
from a shots gain perspective
Russell Henley was better than one player
on the United States team
and you know who it was
it was Justin Thomas
and Justin Thomas is the reason
Jackson Coivan had an amazing President's Cup
because he carried Coivan's ass
on Thursday when Coven could not
he was spraying the ball all through the practice rounds
he could not hit the ball straight
and Justin Thomas had the highest
shots gain of any of the players in the President's Cup on Thursday, got Coyven across the line.
Yes.
And then Coyven figured it out from there.
So Thomas finishes as the worst shots gained statistically of any U.S. player.
And not that close.
Like he's buried down there with Min, no dog Lee.
He's buried with real his satsuni, who we told you was going to win with with.
Hideke on on Thursday.
He's buried there with the Beezer who just was out there happy to be included and did his best.
And there's no knocking on him.
But like, you know, he was he was the Beezer.
It's fine.
He's out there with Corey cannot make a putt Connors.
And he's out there with Nico.
We already knew like the magic was over at Chavarria.
So that's where Justin Thomas ended.
But I feel differently about Justin Thomas than I do about Russell because Justin Thomas,
has that dog.
Way to go out on a limb.
You feel differently about Justin Thomas than you do about Russell Henley?
But statistically, it doesn't tell that story, man.
There's no story.
You should,
you should leave Thomas home because he was not good in this, in this event.
He was not.
That's not the measuring stick.
All he did was drag Jackson Coyven.
He dragged the young, you know.
He did the things that he did what he's supposed to do, and it was the bookends.
They went out and kicked ass on, on, on.
Thursday and it was thrilling. It wasn't a full, it wasn't a full ass kicking. It was a thrilling match.
But he could do that as a captain, not a player. He won and that's that I support that. I certainly
support that. That's not going to happen in Ireland, but you know, three years from now, five years
from now, I don't want anybody that's playing anymore. Would you rather have had Ben James or
or Justin Thomas? I would have rather have had Justin Thomas and nobody else. I would rather,
there's no question about it. You must have those, those veterans of, of, of the,
these matches as part of the team. It's why begrudgingly I held my nose. I mean, Patrick Cantley
and Zandr Schauchley, it occurred to them. It occurred to them on Saturday like, oh, we're done.
We've had enough grape. You know, we've had enough of the fine dining in Chicago. Oh,
um, let's go kick some ass in these matches. It was great. They woke up on Saturday. They
handle their business. And then they showed up for Sunday singles and were like, yo, yo, yo, yo.
And Patty Eyes just, it was so good.
I mean, again, I'm with you in my frustration at their apathy towards the game generally.
But I also love that they showed up on Sunday and were like, dude, guns in holsters, we know what the fuck we're doing.
So they get to be on the team in perpetuity.
They do.
Until if their games fall off, then they won't earn their way.
But yes.
Okay.
But that's the conversation we're having about.
Yeah.
That's the conversation we're having about Justin Thomas right now.
because it wasn't good.
His game was mostly in order enough, though.
He was not on a pure points basis.
It wasn't like they plucked him out of 30th place
and inserted him onto the team.
Okay, so I'm doing a circuitous way to say,
you believe that JJ Spawns should have been there instead of Bridgman.
That is 100% correct.
I will believe that forever.
Yeah.
And so was that like a major gaffe relative to the snake draft stuff?
Like if you ranked the Sned's F-ups, how do you sort of stack them?
The management of the teams by a long shot was way worse.
Was the culture a problem?
No, I don't believe the culture was problem.
I didn't think so either.
Those guys, I think they look like it was good.
I think enough of them have been to enough of these.
Look at what we discovered, and I'll give Sned's credit for it.
He didn't have to put Chris Goderup and Cam Young together,
but you know who I trust now in team competitions for as many as these.
Chris Goddrup and Cam Young.
If these guys are healthy and playing well enough, put those two guys yet forever.
That's exactly.
I want to see more of them.
That's exactly right.
I trust it.
I trust it more than Thomas and Spieth.
I do.
Sure, sure.
I mean, for where guys' games are right now, it's not even close.
100%.
Like those are the guys.
Like it's that plus Sandra and Patrick, I think, are a mainstay right now.
Yeah.
Not, not, not Sam Burns and Scotty.
So let's just stop doing that.
No more of that.
We're done with that.
No.
But is that?
Who's not fault is that?
That's not about fault.
But like, it's just not good, right?
It's not good.
That's a vibes pairing.
And in hindsight, that's what we've done wrong.
There's something about it.
Right.
Who can pinpoint it.
Nobody.
It's sports.
You can't say why.
They like each other.
They're from a similar walk of life.
They have immense respect for one another.
They can't, they don't play well together.
I don't know.
I have no explanation for it.
But is it just that Scotty doesn't play well with anybody in a team competition?
Possibly.
Except it, he is still very good in the four ball because it is him.
He's Scotty fucking Shephler.
That's why.
He's just playing for birdies.
He's playing, you know, the style of golf that makes the most sense.
Why is he bad at the foursums?
Don't know.
Who can say?
But what do you think?
But what do you think?
He wasn't, Tiger wasn't good at it either.
I don't know.
I don't even have a theory.
I saw somebody speculate that it has to do with how Scotty prepares and that his preparation
is so single-minded, single-focused, isolationist, that that has an impact on his ability to,
but I don't know, man.
And there's nobody, you know, the old adages you just want slow, steady, and boring for alternate shot.
And he's certainly capable of, you know, being boring.
He's certainly capable of being steady.
I don't know.
Yeah.
But to be clear, I don't think it's because he doesn't care.
He seemed to really care.
Like, he was out there celebrating.
I don't think he doesn't care.
Like, think about him in tears.
He certainly cared more than Cantlay and Xander.
Those fucking guys.
I mean, you know, it was one o'clock the first two days.
Brother, they help win that rider.
Listen, Zander and Cantlay contrast them with Adam Scott and Hedekke Matsuyama.
Yeah.
Who have been in this competition for 855 years.
And this was their chance.
And they showed up on Sunday and absolutely poo-poohed the bed.
Yeah.
They peed the bed, then they vomited in the bed.
Then they, I mean, it was.
Puky, puked all over and stuff.
That's why they lost.
The puke had the, could have closed out in Warakawa at the end of that, that, and they missed the four-footer.
Yeah, I mean, I like Collins' butt on 15.
Like, he hung in there.
Yeah.
But those are two guys who this would have been the time.
And I actually think that is, I asked you to stack rank the stories.
I think that's the third sneaky story is that Hedekeky and Adam Scott.
didn't quite have the dog, man.
And that, unfortunately, is the story of their entire careers.
And it's why they each only have one major when they could have, maybe should have, had four or more.
And this was all on display under pressure.
Adam Scott did bogey away at Open Championship.
But he went quadruple.
He went boge in however many straight holes to let Ernie L's take an open chance.
We have plenty of proof out there.
And wonderful guy.
Everybody, you know, we always separate the golf.
Yes, and I'm very handsome, man.
Always still handsome.
But this was, the thing that I remarked about this for me was, we actually learned of the 24 guys who participated, put aside the captains, who is and who is not a dog and who we will trust from a betting perspective on a Sunday when they're in contention and who we just know might trip into it, but isn't actually in this moment.
in time seasoned enough to grab it by the throat. And what I mean by that is Nick Taylor, B.D. Nick
Taylor is there's a, there is a reason he has won Pebble Beach. There is a reason he has won
the Waste Management Phoenix Open with the largest crowds on tour. There is a reason that he made
a hundred foot put to win the Canadian Open on his home soil. Like that guy has huge stones.
You know who else has huge stones? This kid Jackson Coyven, right? You know who does not have
stones and it's the reason he's got one win on tour and a lot of hype but mostly smoke not fire
love him in wali but no dog man like this was a time when he could have stepped up and done it
and he didn't and i think you know you talked about russell like i love russell henley like
he's super consistent his floor is super high he's a great professional golfer but there's a reason
why a guy who strikes the ball and when he's on it plays the way that he does doesn't have a major
And we just see it in these competitions.
And zero wins in the last two team play competition.
Zero wins in the Rotter Cup.
Zero wins in the President's Cup.
That's it.
And the only person who's confusing to me coming out of this is Patrick Cantley, who has no majors.
And yet, I want him on that, I need him on that wall, man.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
No two ways about it.
I mean, his record and resume across the board in these team competitions are very...
He earns that.
He's the Sergio or whoever it is on the European side who just shows up every time and you better be afraid.
And Patty Ice is that guy.
I'm not worried about him at the Masters or the U.S. Open.
I know he's going to finish top 10.
I also know he's not going to win.
But, man, I do not want to be on the other side of Patty Ice in a team.
competition. So there's there's sort of a lot of, again, separation of dog, no dog. Was there anybody in
this thing who just completely let you down or completely broke out of the pack for you that we
haven't talked about? I was surprised by Wyndham Clark, who just was on the wrong side of outcomes.
He played in all five matches and finished one and four.
And he, you know, his only true misstep misfortune was playing Tom Kim on Sunday.
And Tom Kim had a plane catch.
Tom Kim had to fly to Korea because that man does not want to.
He wants to try and win his way out of having to, you know, participate with the South Korean military.
He's like, yo, yo, yo, yo, I got a plane to catch.
Let me just take care of this boy real quick and get on an hour.
Tom Kim is that dude and that dog.
but Wyndham going one and four
he still give him a
one minus
kick him a full A
third best
statistically
statistically
the third best player
in this competition
behind
Cam Young who was first
Sung Jay
went two two and one
and then wind him
like it felt like he just had
some rub with the green
his shots game
was Tom Kim
he was but he was the second best
American and I just kind of
walked away from this like
I miss Max
home in this competition, and I believe that they need to find a way to incorporate Max
because I will never forget that put on the green on the Friday that sort of propelled
the U.S. to the win when Max did it. And I just, I think about Wyndham as a bit like Max,
which was in that moment, put it all aside. I know these guys have had, they're important,
they're distant cousins, right? Like they share the same therapist. We saw them on full swing.
and they're guys who have had ebbs and flows in their career,
which is to say they've had streaks where they play amazing and they win,
and then they've sort of fallen off the grid.
But Wyndham Clark is a dog, and I just believe it.
And right now he's at a place in his life,
and he has been since that interview with Scott Pelt
at the par three contests at the Masters,
when he just came out and overstayed his welcome,
but he did not care because that's how much confidence he had in his game,
and he has shown it almost every tournament since.
Like, I want Wyndham Clark on the team right now, man.
It is so funny that, you know, because the Masters was really the inflection point to Wyndham season.
That's when he changed putters.
And that's when his tear commenced post-masters.
His, you know, all of the wins and the restoration of the true swagger.
And, you know.
Emily Tanner and the caddy outfit.
I mean, yeah, it all sort of coalesced in waves that came together.
together. Yes, it did.
Yes. And it's working for him. He's in a place
where he's so clearly happy in his life
and he has taught us that psychologically
when he's in a good place, he plays
incredible golf and that's where he is
right now. And it showed
out here. His record is
so not indicative
of how well he played in this thing. I want him
on the team. Yeah, we want him on the team.
All right, let me ask you a question
before we kind of put a bow on
this President's Cup because I think we've covered
a lot of it. And, you know,
So hopefully a couple of years from now, some of our thinking will catch on with some
decision makers and we'll see how it all plays out.
What do you think Jim Furek can do about alternate shot for the U.S. team?
Because we now have, I mean, DataGolf did a nice job of pointing out that it's a fairly
recent vintage that the U.S. has been terrible at, which is pre-2020.
we were better.
Right. The less four or five of these match
competitions, we've just got our ass, U.S.
has gotten their ass handed to them?
What do you think Furek can do to remedy that,
if anything?
I think he can put Wyndham
and Justin Thomas and Cam Young
and a couple of these other guys who showed us
that they really give a shit. And maybe Patrick and Zander
in a room and say six times,
maybe eight times in 2027,
I'm flying out to the tournament
and our Tuesday round
or our Monday round,
you've got to not come in on Monday and register
and then do a little scouting Tuesday, Wednesday.
You've got to come in on Sunday.
And our Monday or Tuesday rounds,
we're going to do this.
And we're going to go out in two foursoms
and we're going to play foursums, like for real.
And we're going to do this.
And we're going to get.
get comfortable with it.
And we're going to play.
And we just, all we got to do is play.
And he knows at this point who the guys are going to be save two, maybe three spots.
So just put our dogs out there and give them some reps, man.
I just think over the last five or six years of golf,
and this is probably a good time to transition into some of like the what's going to happen to live stuff.
But we've gotten away from, there's been so much palace intrigue.
and the players have maybe had a bunch of leverage.
They've certainly gotten paid.
But the focus has been how do we alleviate the burden on them?
How do we reduce the amount that they play?
How do we pay them in a way that they haven't been paid?
But it hasn't been what the Europeans have been doing,
which is, fuck it, we care about this.
This is our life.
This is our country.
We're going to do whatever it takes.
I think after these ass kickings,
and let's be clear,
I think most of the American team feels like they don't feel quite like they lost,
but they don't feel great.
It's not a great victory, right?
It's Pyrrhic.
And so they will step back and say, what do we have to do to go over to Ireland
and reassert ourselves as Team USA?
And I think it just means reps, but they're going to have to give up their Mondays,
Tuesdays.
And I know what you're going to say to me right now,
which is a lot of them have committed to play TGL on Tuesday.
I'm not saying that.
That's not what I'm here to say.
So maybe it happens at a course in Jupiter, you know, wherever in Florida, where they do this thing.
But they're going to have to give up time.
And for the last five, six years, the whole mention of giving up time has been antithetical to what the players have been doing.
If the U.S. team cares, that's what they've got to do for the next 12 months, house.
So I kind of love this.
but I don't think you're going to get more than five or six guys to go along with it.
All we need is eight.
You don't include.
Zander and Cantley don't need to do it.
They have a like five and two or five and three record as foursums in the President's Cup.
They're two and three in the Ryder Cup.
Like that's enough.
I'm not worried about them.
The only other guy who's a lock is Scotty Sheffler, right?
Like who else has the
has the permission to be like
I don't want to do that.
Scotty, that's it.
Do you want him to play forsums?
Yes.
You beat me.
He's 1 and 8.
He's 1 8 and 1.
He got so pissed off when he got benched
on Saturday afternoon.
He wouldn't even
he wouldn't talk to Kara.
He was kind of a dick to her.
Yeah, he was.
I love it because he wants it, dude.
Then go to him right now and say, while that sting is still fresh, I want your commitment.
I'm going to bench you for some of this.
You're not playing all the things unless you commit to getting better at this.
Because Scotty, like, I just, here's the math, dude.
Four balls and singles are not an issue.
I'm not worried about Scotty and four balls or singles.
Maybe it just doesn't play fours them.
Do you care enough at the tournaments that you play to show up Sunday instead of Monday?
Fly Meredith on the plane with the kids or whatever it is and come out and do alternate shot.
And I know that's not your normal prep, but like, Scotty, you know, we'll do those six or eight practice rounds, not the week before the Masters.
And we'll do it, you know, three weeks in Houston or whatever it is.
You better find it in the way that makes him, that really fits his schedule.
Has it be in Florida?
I mean, you know,
put it on him.
And does he care?
Does he care?
And if he doesn't respond and opt in, then bench him for that.
I agree.
Ian Burns can't be a pairing anymore.
And I'm going to say this as quietly as possible.
I don't really want to see Sam Burns in these in these anymore.
I'm not sure.
This was the year to have him.
I'm happy for him to have made the forward,
to have taken the forward step that he did this season
in terms of his individual stroke play performance
and to be competing for the majors,
it was like, okay, this is thrilling.
He's got some, he had no dog in him.
I didn't see a dog whatsoever.
There was no barking at all.
There wasn't even a yip.
Yep.
I mean, got his ass handed to him on Sunday.
Only two players lost on Sunday in singles.
Sam Burns and Wyndham,
and Wyndham just walked into Tom Kim
who had somewhere else to be.
I give them a break.
I just want to.
Yeah, I do too.
I don't hate the Bridgman decision.
I didn't like the Bridgman management.
I think Bridgman was brought on to putt,
which he did an alternate shot,
and he did decently well.
His numbers sucked for the week.
He got put out in,
I understand,
but I think part of the reason his numbers sucked
is because he got put out into singles
to play a course that he hadn't under pressure.
By the way, he was better statistically than Schauffler was.
The problem was he lost a stroke and a half putting.
And that's not what he was supposed to do.
That's not what he was there for.
He did not execute in the way that he should.
But the point of this, the whole point of this,
was let's put these young guys in competition
in a relatively un-dramatic.
I mean, by the way, he gained two points.
3 shots on approach, he was probably 5th, maybe third in the 5th in the U.S.
He was one chef, Chokensky.
He should have been 0.3.
He should have been...
But only because he didn't put well, my point is...
Minwoo choked away that match.
Our expectation was that Nico and Beezer and a couple of these other guys were not going to
play great, and so we could introduce these guys in the same way that Nikolai Hoygard
and Ludwig got introduced in a...
relatively, although that was higher stakes.
The point was not they need to be great.
It's that let's integrate them into the culture.
Let's give them some reps.
They're going to suck early.
It's like starting a rookie quarterback in week one.
You know he's going to get the shit smacked out of him,
but he's going to ultimately be better.
And that's what this was.
And I think the fact that Bridgman, in a few statistical categories,
did well, as did Coivan, is a great thing.
And I think it valid, it's why we can leave them off the next team.
We're going to beat these guys,
no matter what. I love that we made it close by not having JJ spawned. Fine. From here,
you know, Ben James is going to be in contention to be on this Rider Cup team if he keeps
playing this way. And if he doesn't, but he posts a bunch of top tens, we should think about
bringing him on in place of one of these, you know, other guys. I don't hate the strategy.
I just didn't like the fact that Bridgman got put out on Sunday, having not hit all the shots
in competition on course because he didn't play four,
ball. He only played fours some. And so suddenly he's hitting, you know, drives or or approach
shots that he had never had to hit in competition. I think that's hard to do. And that's a management
issue with Snedz. I'm going to get, I want, Shane Ryan wrote a great recap of the President's Cup.
And he was extremely glass half full on it. He was a tiny bit of a zag, but he was very glass half
full in the sense that it, it was a best case outcome for the U.S. because the U.S. is not going to come
away from that feeling great.
We're not going to engage in the false, you know, self-congratulations of writing this.
Instead, it will, you know, shine a bright light on areas of focus, areas of intrigue.
And Shane Ryan posits that Jim Furick will not make these same mistakes.
Furek was there.
He was in the captain's room.
And he's done this before.
And he's been there before.
And, you know, he knows exactly where to go.
to address the vulnerabilities, the deficiencies.
But I am sort of intrigued in this notion that you're advancing,
and this is another reason I'd like to have Shane.
It would be cool to have a way for these rosters to have guys on there either as alternate,
some kind of like practice squad vibe, because it is curious to me.
I think part of why JJ Spong got left off was because of the injury at the...
It was.
It was.
It was.
Yes.
And if you weren't certain.
And at the BMW or at the tour championship.
Yeah.
So why, right.
Why couldn't?
There's no mechanism by which you can include him some way on the team to, you know,
to make a last second decision.
And if he had to drop out that you have somebody that can step into his shoes,
there should be some mechanism for that.
But I,
yeah.
It seems like historically there isn't.
Well, but that that's the thing that sucked about Victor, like handing an envelope,
because Victor is maybe, maybe not hurt,
and so they get to bail him out.
That sucks.
I think that's a great idea.
You're sad that you didn't see Harry English play on Beth Payton?
No, I'm not at all.
I'm sad I didn't see him.
He had to clean the puke off his shoes from the way that he and Colin play.

So as we sort of emerge from
this,
I'm most interested in the captaincy
question because we're going to have Furek.
But
if we're honest with each other,
there are three guys who are in line
and you know there should be a fourth
and maybe even a fifth
depending on how his career goes
maybe a sixth I mean
there are guys on the live tour who
I mean one guy was touted as Captain America
and that's Patrick Reed
there's another guy Dustin Johnson who's sitting over there
who won the Masters in the U.S. Open
and you know before he got
wealthy and comfortable and stopped seemingly giving a shit
like was a guy, not necessarily the Ra Ra Leader, fine,
but put those guys aside for now.
Phil Mickelson, I think is probably done,
but probably would have been, probably would have been,
yeah, but I mean, like the guy who could bring intrigue,
like what would be his path to redemption?
It would be doing this.
But Phil is out there, right?
But really, in the absence of that,
you've got tiger effing woods who you know i i i don't know he does not seem to have taken
very many bullets for what happened over the course of the last year it seems like he's come out of
that unscathed interesting i don't know about that he had to drop out of sight for six months
he's very much back right now and i'm i'm seeing it yeah so so it's not like i mean it's different
than phil let's put it that way so so you got tiger in the conversation and then i think next
in line. It's probably some, I mean,
Spieth, if he's not going to be on these teams,
is an all-timer.
And then it's Thomas. So you got,
we have a lot of next generation leadership that depending on how it goes over the next
year and a week with the U.S.
Rider Cup could finally tip the balance and change the complexion of who is at the top
of this thing.
But what do you think, like if you are the czar of USA Golf,
what are you doing right now from a leadership perspective?
Forget we've talked about all the players.
Who do you want in that team room right now?
The guys that have won.
I mean, why has Steve Stricker fallen completely off the face of the earth?
Interesting.
He seemed to have, you know, the combination of a strategy.
He certainly had the dogs, but he had the strategy.
He had the foresight.
You know, it seemed like he'd be prepared for it.
um, furek, i, i, i'll just say in general, I don't think it's wrong to have two or three guys
and let them kind of repeat like this this this this this Luke donald thing, the continuity
of it certainly has some appeal to be travel Trevor imleman working like the yeah the yeah
and I guess we sort of have it by virtue of the assistant captain kind of thing but like looking
at that one kegan in the room no no no no
respectfully like you know I'm I'm glad for him that he got to be the captain that he was of the
u.s team he wasn't ready for that moment and to be fair how could he possibly be ready upon
reflection he was playing competitive golf at a super high level how could he possibly be prepared
with all of the detail that you need to successfully compete against europe
So here's where we come down to the business versus the practicality of it.
Who on the live side, and I include Phil in this, do you think in the ideal world, if there was none of this tension and, you know, golf had not fractured, who would you have in that team room?
You get four picks?
You mean, in what respect?
Heading into Ireland, who do you want to be our four people?
who are the leaders of this program, are any of them on the live side?
Do you want fill in that room?
No.
Do you want DJ?
Do you want Patrick?
Do you want Bryson?
I want Bryson on the team.
Yeah, 100% on the team.
This is a great question.
Is there anybody who fractured off?
I want to put this on, no.
I want to put this, though, on Shane Ryan, because it's very fascinating to me.
I would have Furik Stricker.
Tiger and I don't know who the fourth would be.
Maybe J.T.
Is it too early for JT?
Yeah.
I mean, I don't want to be respectful to Gary Woodland.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Maybe J.T.
It feels like the guys who have the passion for it.
I mean, nobody's more passionate than JT.
So I either want, again, I either want them on the team or I want him in the team room.
But he is the culture carrier of this team for the next two decades, I think.
I agree.
because it just matters to him.
Yeah.
So great.
He's the I love me some me guy.
He's the inheritor to Tiger's thing.
First, we've got to put Tiger in to just, the tiger, it's time.
So either do it, poop or get off the pot, right?
So either be in it or not.
And then if Phil is out and blown up and gone and, you know, DJ,
none of us really think he's a leader, it's fine.
He is what he is.
Patrick Reed, people aren't probably going to follow for the same reasons.
But Patrick, I'd love him to be in the team room because he's a,
you know, he's definitely a dog.
So who do we, who do we do that with from here?
I'm happy to have JT.
But I think that's the operative question.
And I think the voices on this are going to get louder if we lose in Ireland.
I think there's going to be a bit of a purge.
And I feel badly for the guys, Keegan, Gary Woodland, et cetera.
I'm not sure.
Why?
Why?
Tell me.
Because the wild card is the PGA of America who has been just an inchoate, you know,
bumbling circus of, of, you know, backwards thinking, you know, they had that moron, Don Rea or whatever
his name is, who thought that everybody wanted to see him speak and found a camera every chance
he got and, you know, just pooped all over himself and covered the entire event in ignominy.
I mean, it's very hard to recover from the disastrous sportsmanship element of the Bethpage thing.
And that's a hard thing to get that taste out of your mouth.
And that was that was in that was in Sned's and Wyndham's like show up and rage,
whatever they said, like comments, like even there, there, there's still echoes of that, aren't there?
Well, I mean, they, they, those guys had a tough set of cards to navigate because you want the sports machine element to come through.
But nobody was there.
Exactly right. Because it's in September.
Speaking of no dogs.
Yeah.
Chicago, man.
I mean, I was born there.
Well, you know, who knows?
Let me ask you this.
Who knows?
And this would be our pivot.
If Bryson was there and Joaquin Neiman and Lucas Erbert were there on the international side, like just the Neiman and Lucas element, what that would have meant to that team, it would have meant that they didn't have to have Nico, I guess, B's are, although B's are versus.
is Corey Connors is an interesting question because every time Corey Connors shows up at one of these events,
nobody thinks that Corey Connors is going to do anything to advance the...
Then Corey does things. It's just that he misses three to five foot putts. That's what he does.
Yes, that he was. But Bryson for sure, the wattage, the amplification of the entire thing.
It's not even close. Yeah. But let... He's got to be there. He's got to be there. Right.
Cam Smith. I mean, three years ago,
Cam Smith, you and I would have been excited.
I'm not sure he cares enough.
He showed up at least at the PGA
championship, but then fell off
the face of the earth for the rest.
Should we continue
to host this event as it is
currently constructed? Or should
we move to either
a co-ed event
or a
team-based event that is
country
different than the Olympics
in that way? Do you think this is the right?
should be doing the countries. The Olympics should be doing countries because we have very strong
proof of concept that it works, that it's compelling the Japanese team on Thursday going out,
Rio and Hedecki. That was compelling. The South Koreans, Kim, who, who, the Canadian team, we, we just
took a shit on Cory Connors, but he and Nick, Nick Taylor, helps cover off a lot of Corey's
deficiencies. Yes, we have proof of concept. That's a, that's a,
what this thing is. If the Olympics wasn't moronic, they would be doing this, but they're stupid.
So they want to do single individual stroke pay tournament that tells you nothing, completely out
of step with the Olympic identity. What else is new? Like, you know, shocker. They think that's what's
going to be the most compelling and make the most money. It's not. Is this the right format house? Do you
want to see it evolve? Do you want to see Nelly? I think it's happening organically. But I do want to see
you're describing make it up somebody make that tournament up let's do it there's no reason that it
doesn't exist somebody the pj in place of this president's cup no i or is this still the right
because it um gives the opportunity for the u.s it is the u.s feeder system it should be an
advantage for the u.s because it's competed every year it helps us create you know new stories
new competitors we just gave reps to jacob richmond will they continue
Valuable reps.
It depends on how he plays this next year to see whether or not he makes it onto the Ryder Cup team.
We know Jackson Coybin got valuable reps because he went out and he kicked ass on a new stage.
And we expect him to have a very good season and for him to be on the Ryder Cup.
So that's a good thing.
And we know some of the guys who if they, for whatever reason, don't finish in the top six,
it'll be okay to not have them on the team in 2027 in Ireland.
Yeah. Okay. All right. Well, that's a, I mean, your point is, yes, keep it. But let's also nurture some other team slash country-based events.
No reason not to. I mean, the Olympics should be should be by country. That would be amazing. Two men's would be amazing. Two women's would be amazing. Absolutely positively should be. Can I ask you another question? Please do it.
What the hell is going to happen to live house? Oh, we already know. We already know. We already know.
We've been sort of forecasting.
We've, it's, it's the, the latest terms of events seems to be further confirmation.
This is, you know, sources and so forth.
That there isn't 100% certainty around the, the, the funding entity coming into the mix and providing the background because the, the economic, the,
financial background necessary for Live 2.0 to succeed. The Saudis are are not thrilled with the
tax advantages that this investment group would would get the benefit in that Saudis think that they
should have those tax advantages since they plowed five effing billion dollars into this thing and it
didn't produce the kind of return that they were hoping for. So there's that which is in a way
a kind of a technical thing, but really does speak to the existential threat going forward,
but really the existential threat is who's playing. And I think the sources, the indications we have
out there are what? What are you hearing? Yeah, I mean, I think let's be clear. Rahm is gone,
Yaakoneman is gone, Hatton is gone. And the only reason that we haven't heard that publicly is,
they're in the mix with this bankruptcy negotiation.
And if they abdicate their commitment and ownership and stake in all of this stuff,
they can't get whatever is going to fall out of the trees from that conversation.
But I don't think it's a debate.
I think at this point, you know, we know Bryson is committed to this.
He loves team golf.
He wants to try to find a way to make this happen.
I think there's a bunch of other guys who are less interesting probably to the general public who are in.
But I think that those guys have decided, meaning Rom, Hatton, Neiman, have decided that they are going to do what it takes to work their way back.
And that probably means we see them in Europe.
It means they're probably ultimately going to have conversations with roll-up.
I think if you're the PGA tour right now, you look at what happened historically and you're like,
Like, I'm not going to do anything that could put me in a position where I get sued because
historically this group has been fairly litigious in what they do.
So I'm just going to stand on the sidelines with my hands folded and stare out the window
and it is on them to, and Roll-up has been very intentional in the way that he has described
this.
It is on them to get out of their contracts, however that is, and then we can have a conversation.
Anything else he says after that about the road back and what the penalties and it doesn't matter.
What he's saying there is, I know legally I can't talk to you.
And by the way, legally you can't talk to me.
Solve that problem and we're ready to talk.
And I think there's three guys who've decided they're going to do that.
They can't do it now until this bankruptcy situation is over.
Then they will.
But we are getting very close to a situation in which most of the best guys in the world are working their way through Europe
back to the PGA tour, save for one.
And it's the big golfer.
That's the big Cohoona himself.
Yeah.
The big grass stomper.
What do we think he does?
If Live 2.0 doesn't come together,
they can't do 10 international events.
What's plan B?
I don't even think he knows right now.
I think he knows that he has a massive audience.
I think he cares about team golf.
I think he wants.
I don't think he's as invested in live as people give him credit for.
I think he's invested in evolving and growing the game globally.
He likes the concept of team golf.
I don't think, I genuinely believe that he hasn't thought about what's next.
I mean, it's like people ask me about, you know, my brother's been in golf for 12 years on tour.
He's a top 10 earner on the PGA tour.
without a win of all time.
And people like, well, you know, he's 37.
What's he going to do next?
I'm like, I just got to be honest with you.
He hadn't even thought about it.
Like he might be a ski instructor.
He might be a pro.
He might do me.
He hadn't even thought about it.
And I think Bryson is in that situation right now where he's committed a ton of his life to this.
He cares passionately about it.
And, you know, we'll see what he does.
Right now, I think the next 30 to 60 days are going to probably from my vantage point.
And I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't know.
but you and I are looking at this going, man, I just, it's hard to imagine that these guys get to steal $5 billion in net operating losses to apply to a bunch of other companies.
It feels like the thing's not going to happen.
And then what?
Then I think the other guys are going to make their way through Europe and Bryson's going to have a very interesting discussion with himself, basically in his team, which is like, do I, should I just be a content creator and show up at the majors?
like how do I force golf to recognize where rank points or do I, you know, make my way back to
the PGA tour and then from the inside as if I'm neo plowing through the matrix, find a way to
change from within because the last six years have been about guys trying to force the issue
from the outside, right?
Sort of like escalation and almost to the brink of sort of nuclear war.
The question is if these guys...
who were definitely change agents, work their way back into the system, can they affect change
more effectively that way, given the evolution of leadership? Or should they continue to stay on
the outside? What do you mean? Effect change. There's no more change to affect. The change is done.
That's what the 2028 calendar is. It's the Challenger Series. It's the championship champion series.
It's the money that came in that stabilized the tour, the tour recognizing that it needs to
to compensate its best players on a more regular basis and get them on TV on a more predictable basis
because it's the TV product that only thing that matters.
This is why Brian Rolap is the CEO and commissioner and president and head honcho of golf
is because there's a TV deal to be struck here in the near term.
And there are streamers that have money to deploy.
And there are network television stations that that have money to deploy.
and there's cable channels that have money to deploy,
and it's his job to get them to deploy that money
in the spirit and interest of professional golf.
Am I wrong?
You and I just talked about how cool it was
to have the Canadians and the Japanese
and these teams going at it.
Maybe the President's Cup is the format for that.
Maybe it's not, but there's value in that.
Meanwhile, you have been riding for the TGL from day one,
places that, you know, are ostensibly loosely affiliated with cities,
but the players themselves aren't affiliated with the cities.
But that is team golf at the end of the day.
I don't care about it.
I just, it's just interesting to me.
That's all.
But I'm just saying there's value there.
Yeah, there's value.
Is there having teams is the thing.
Maybe there isn't, and we just don't care, and this is an individual sport.
And like, you know, the Davis Cup is the Ryder Cup.
I'm talking about individual sports.
and we're going to be inness and golf, and nobody actually cares about this. But if I am
roll-app thinking about renegotiating deals, creating a situation which there is a
separate product that either involves the TGL teams or involves countries, but I
own and is different than the Olympics or anything else, like that potentially is
interesting to me. So I think that's the only question. It's really, it comes down to
the big golfer and whether he's going to be, you know, his own traveling, you know, one-man
show or whether he's going to integrate himself into some other entity where he will be probably
the biggest star and affect whatever it is that he wants to do for golf from within. Or is he just
going to go rogue and punch out on his own? And I think that's actually the most interesting
question in the business of golf right now. The NOL stuff, I mean, maybe they pull it out
and there is a live 2.0. But let's just assume that.
there's not. Rom, Hatton, Yaco are the only three that we care about outside of
Bryson, really there, who could go win a major right now. Maybe Lucas Herbert, I don't know,
man, but let's just say those are the three. There's a fourth, and it's Bryson DeShambo,
and what's he going to do? And I think the next three months, that's the underlying
story in the business of golf, and I can't wait to see what happens. I bet we don't have a
resolution in the next three months. I think we'll get
some twists and turns, but I bet we don't have an answer.
Because I, it seems like...
Yeah, these guys are going to have to declare.
The three, the guys that are going to Europe, I treat that exactly the way you're describing
it.
That's where I expect to watch them play golf in this upcoming professional season.
Bryson is the one that I would say, I feel like there are enough of the national opens
with qualifying standards that he meets and he could go on a little bit of a world tour
by virtue of like
he can go play in Asia
in some of those events
he can play in in Australia
in some of their events
and like that would be
he could play in some of the European
open invitationals right
he can play in some of those
in addition to the majors
and then and then if you want to wear
the banner of expanding golf
and being the ambassador
internationally he does get credit
for being the only
major winner to go play in India at the time of holding that major title.
It matters to him.
It matters to him.
It really does.
So what's he going to do from here?
I just, I think it is worth the watch from here.
I think we know what everybody else in the sport is going to do.
What Bryson does is worth watching.
Speaking of worth watching, there is still professional golf on the calendar.
The BGA Tour Fall Series chugs along.
We're going to Utah.
We go right from the beautiful.
I love the way Medina looked on television, by the way.
I thought whatever, you know, the renovations and stuff.
Incredible.
I heard some carping about where the out-of-bounds was,
and it was hilarious when the ball, where the dude kicked the ball on the green,
and they said it was intentional, and they gave Corey Conners the out-of-bounds.
Anyways, these guys just make up this shit as we go.
The guy kicked the ball intentionally.
Oh, did you go ask him?
He said that he kicked it.
It was an on-per.
Anyway, I'll stop.
I'll stop right now.
It's hilarious.
We are at the Black Desert Resort, the Bank of Utah Championship at a golf course that's been open all of about two and a half minutes.
2003, Tom Weiskoff and his design partner, Phil Smith.
It is lava fields and red rock, this, like, desert of southern Utah.
Have you been to that portion of our great country?
It is a gorgeous course.
I have. You've been? It is a
go, yes, I have. It is a gorgeous
place to be. I didn't get invited. All those
national parks, come on, man. Yeah, you're right.
We're talking about it. Amazing, though.
That desert area. It's closer to
my house than yours. You're right about that.
Absolutely right about that. It's
they play at elevation. It's
more than 3,000 feet above
sea level par 71,
like a 7,500-ish
on the scorecard, but it doesn't play
that long.
It can be easy scoring.
the winning scores have both been in like the 22 under 23 under kind of you know territory the fairways are generous but if you hit it into the lava rock you're dead fucked so don't do that don't hit it into the lava fields which means that you have to be a driver of the golf ball that is it it's inviting you to hit it far the way this thing is set up but you have to have some accuracy and that was michael brennan's recipe last season to winning this thing i think
I think he shot, what he's 22 under, and he beat out Rico Hoey by four strokes.
And then in the first year at it, Matt McCarty came in and beat Stephen Yeager.
McCarty shot a 23 under.
So we got some young guns, though.
Low scores are out there.
Yeah, we got some young guns this week, though.
I mean, we got Coyven, we got Brennan, we got Ben James.
And they're the three guys at the top.
at the top of the odds board.
I'm pretty, this is like a,
I don't know that the course,
the course visually is beautiful.
I don't know that like,
from a challenge perspective,
it's necessarily worthy of this.
But I think this is what's fun about the fall
is this is a major vetting
of three guys who we think
could all be competing for spots
on the Ryder Cup team this year.
So that's why this is worth watching this week.
And that is essentially,
you know,
a theme that we will be touting here
on the Fairway Wrong. The calendar has officially opened for good performances on tour to translate
into Rider Cup eligibility. And that's, we got that honestly on the European side with Matt Fitzpatrick
winning that in France. And immediately, you know, he said in his post-event interviews that it was
important to him to come out fast for his eligibility, preserve his spot on the Ryder, Europe Ryder Cup team.
I mean, how about that? But, you know,
Yes, that's a theme for us as we continue to watch, you know, these young U.S. players.
And, you know, look at the odds board.
It's Coyvin at 12 to 1.
Michael Brennan, the defending champion, is 16 to 1.
Ben James, whose name keeps showing up in high finishes on tour at 16 to 1.
Matt Wallace, who's quietly had a really solid fall at 22 to 1, had a nice performance at Wentworth.
And then Matt McNeely, whose name we heard as a right at the very end of the decision making for the Rider Cup at Bethpage at 22 to 1,
Doug Gim, who's in the top 15 of strokes gained total for the entire year, 25 to 1.
I am playing all of those guys.
I have top 20s and top 10s.
I mean, Doug Gim made us a bunch of money in Asheville.
He's gained at least six strokes.
He's putting better.
This is the thing.
This is our guy Rick Gaiman.
He's gained at least six strokes from T to Green in all three of his last three top 20 finishes for a total of over 22 strokes gained in those 12 rounds.
So I kind of bungled getting that out, but he has been T to Green off the charts.
And he's putted much better.
top 20 finishes in five of his last seven.
Doug Gim, top 10 and top 20 for me.
Jackson Coyvin, you just have to play him.
I'm playing him top 10, top 20, not playing him to win because I don't love the odds
and coming off of the high of that President's Cup.
What does that do?
He's overrated right now from an odds perspective.
Yeah, maybe so.
Because, you know, we kind of wondered, could he carry it over from his win in Minnesota
to Detroit?
would another high finish follow
and it didn't. I think he missed the cut in Detroit.
Coyven, I'm playing top 10 and top 20.
I mean, we're just going to keep doing Ben James.
We have to keep playing Ben James.
All he does is make us money.
We have for him.
It feels it's going to happen.
Yeah.
Third place at Wyndham,
runner up at Biltmore in Asheville.
He was not in the playoffs.
So he set that out.
But he has that.
formula that you want in terms of a long driver of the golf ball. It averages over 310 yards.
And then he's hitting 80% of fairways. And he's also capable of converting birdies.
We see him at over 24%. So he is coming in hot. He has the skill set to, I mean, this is, I'm going to bet him to win. I'm going to bet him to top 10 and I'm going to bet him to top 20.
but it's Ben James.
Okay.
This is a Ben James podcast, Nate Dogg.
Okay.
I mean, I love it.
I just, I want to point out that Nick Taylor is playing this tournament and he's 55 to 1 and
Max home is playing this tournament and he's 45 to 1.
So I just like, I look at those two guys right now.
Top 20s on both those guys.
Let me write it down.
Nick Taylor's game is in shape.
Yeah.
I also just want to point out not because I think anybody should bet him, but that Tony
Fienow is in this tournament in his home state at a hundred.
100 to 1.
Not betting him to win under any circumstances.
No, I'm not asking you to put any money on him.
I just am looking at that objectively going,
holy shit, Tony Fienow's 100 to 1
in a glorified corn fairy tour event in his home state.
And he's 100 to 1.
Hello how the mighty, my friend.
It's an observation, yes.
His game did abandon him so much so he didn't make the playoffs.
But let's see if, you know,
I don't know.
This is maybe a kickstart.
Maybe the time off has served him well.
Yeah, I think it's actually that he abandoned his game a little bit
and has been focused on his family.
And if he gets refocused and spends time,
I'm not sure he lost it so much as he stopped trying his hard.
And if he tries hard, let's see.
We don't skip over this man when we see him in an event.
We're going to play more Jackson Super.
Jackson Subur top 20.
He rewarded us handsily with our faith in him.
Another top 15, another top 20 at the Biltmore.
He finished tied for 15th in this very event a year ago.
Three straight made cuts, which is a thing for him.
It's the first time he's ever done that on tour.
So he's a new player.
And, you know, so that's all I got on my card.
Those are all the names.
Do you have anybody else?
No, Neil Shipley's been playing really good golf.
he's 61 in this tournament.
Do not bet individual, you know, wins unless you feel like crazy about it.
But, you know, Neil Shipley at a top 20 is a very interesting bet for me this week.
I'm going to get something down on RICO also.
Same, same kind.
Okay.
Oh, yeah.
Neal's plus 250 to top 50 to top 20.
Yeah.
Rico, I like as a guy who played well here at this event last year, RICO Hoey.
I need to look.
Is Ricky Castillo in this one?
No, I'm not seeing him on the board.
I was not playing it.
Okay.
That I would have considered Ricky because I like the way that he looked in Asheville.
Okay.
Well, that's pretty good.
We covered off a lot.
The U.S. has a lot to build on from this President's Cup.
Nobody is coming in to the Ryder Cup.
It's officially Ryder Cup year.
We're looking at it right now.
It's started Monday.
The full calendar year preparation.
Go ahead.
Rico's plus 230, just so you know.
Top 20.
top 20 Rico Hoey that feels really good good there we go top 20 love that I just want to make sure
you know that yeah okay sorry no we're we're we're we're cranking here hopefully the u.s
straight yes yes kirk is can't cranking you know who is cranking definitely who was not at the
president's cup is our guy Justin ray and I know he wasn't there because people were asking him you
know what's going on are you there and j ray as you would expect above the fray it's like I'm not
there I'm reading the guys on super hard I can't wait to get to
work with with Captain Furik.
I really do think that
with the benefit of
the way this President's Cup just went down
that we're going to see some
genuine innovation over the course of this year.
And now it's just up to the guys
to qualify, to play great, and to
give us 12 great American golfers
to go into Ireland and kick
some ass in the Ryder Cup, which would be
wonderful. I hope all of you
at this beautiful time of years
we go from summer into
fall. Nathan
was kicking some ass on the golf course.
Just these last couple of days,
he's at a golf course right now,
not to be disclosed,
but I'm not going to ask him,
just throw a peg in the ground
if you are able to do so,
and please let's hit him straight out there.
