Starting point is 00:00:01 This is Chris Martin, and me and my buddy Kevin O'Connor, aka Kevin O Everything, hosting an NBA podcast called The Mismatch. They call it The Mismatch because I'm awesome and Kevin is a gigantic nerd. No, no, that's not why at all, Chris. They call it the Mishmatch because I have a brain and you're a loudmouth bozo. Good grief. Anyway, listen to our amazing NBA podcast, The Mismatch. Or don't.
Starting point is 00:00:28 We really don't care. We're probably going to win a million awards either way. Chris, we do care. So don't say that. Please subscribe and listen to the mismatch only on Spotify. Did you really call me a bozo? Welcome to this golf podcast, unlike any other. Oh, yes, my friend, we've done it.
Starting point is 00:01:16 We are back, baby. This is Fairway Rowland. The Golf Podcast on the Ringer Podcast Network. I am your starter. Joe House, I am joined by my beloved PGA tour correspondent on the ground. Nathan Hubbard, it's a two ball this week. We are bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, fully recovered from the Masters and ready to talk about Harbour Town, ready to talk about New Orleans, ready to talk about Saudi Arabia,
Starting point is 00:01:51 maybe 10 seconds on this stupid iteration of the latest announcement, having to do with the match. Let's get over to the first T. There are wide open fairways in front of us. Nate Dog, how you feeling? We said it a year ago. We're going to say it again. He is risen.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Jordan Spieth. See, I'm so happy for you in particular, no one on this podcast is a bigger Speeth truther than you. Although over the years, we've had, you know, people share their love. Megan Schuster comes to mine as a strong proponent
Starting point is 00:02:39 of Spieth. But I felt like in retrospect we did not do enough about Jordan Speeth in connection with the Masters. You were very quiet about Jordan Speeth at the Masters, Nathan. I didn't feel very good. I didn't like what I was seeing.
Starting point is 00:02:54 And it didn't result in much. And it seemed to fuel up my guy. He needed a resurrection on Easter baby. We talked about him in the context of the amazing Sunday round that he had at the Valero. Yes. Where he was lights out teed green, like kind of, you know, almost unprecedented. We were said to each other, if there's anybody that can catch a master's heater because
Starting point is 00:03:23 of the familiarity and the comfort and all that goes along with it. And that was the context in which we touched on the spieth. But then he went out and missed the cut, kind of laid an egg on us. Took a dump in the water on 12 again. Again. Gosh. It's just incredible. Don't you think, well, whatever.
Starting point is 00:03:41 At some point, and this was the feedback, you know, across the board for all the guys that, you know, hit 12, especially on Sunday. I mean, poor Camp Smith. Yeah. If you've ever watched a YouTube, just take an eight iron and hit it to the left. If it goes long, it's okay. It's fine. I mean, we've, there's, there's, there are 50 iterations of Tiger Woods.
Starting point is 00:04:10 There are a hundred iterations of Jack Nicholas. You can find guys successfully hitting the green on 12. Not saying that it's easy. Just saying there are, the template is out there that the path has been marked. There's not a great template, though, for losing two and a half strokes putting and being almost dead last of the guys who made the cut in putting and winning a golf tournament. I mean, the guy misses a three-footer Thursday, a four-footer for Eagle Friday, an 18-inch putt on Saturday, a three-foot-11 put on Sunday, also a five-footer on 11 on Sunday. I counted 10 putts that he missed from 10 to 15 feet. And he won the golf tournament.
Starting point is 00:04:59 And that is because his ball striking was first in the field, Tita Green, which is what we saw in that last round leading up to the Masters. Indeed. The reason for our, you know, cautious optimism for him, I was reminded of how much I enjoy Jordan Speath. And this is, you know, one of the things with, the trajectory that professional golf is on into this summer, we need some stars, right?
Starting point is 00:05:31 Because Tiger is going to be on a limited appearance basis. And he confirmed. He's not walking through that door. He confirmed for sure his intention to play St. Andrews. He went ahead and filled out the paperwork for the U.S. Open. So did Phil Mickelson.
Starting point is 00:05:48 As did Phil Mickelson, yes, indeed. which is just the prerequisite to countenance even even any possibility no comment on the pga championship which suggests to me a disinclination to play that you know um for tiger that is we're on a little bit of a tangent here but yeah well he said he likes the course he'd like to get back for it he's going to do everything he can that's right it sounds like a no to me sounds like a no to me dog but we were really talking about jordan spieth we are really talking about Jordan Speath. And the charisma of that fellow and what he does in terms of taking the golf viewing
Starting point is 00:06:28 experience and elevating it and making it interesting. And he's still beloved. It is an interesting juxtaposition in terms of some of the ratings we saw of the Masters on Sunday, Scotty Shuffler out there by five. They didn't catch, you know, Tiger's not in the mix. So they, the Masters has been on a little bit of a downer. trend eyeballs wise anyhow and we're in this tough moment where how do you capture nielsen ratings and marry them up with streaming ratings and because the masters is so good so extraordinary
Starting point is 00:07:03 at delivering live action golf um through its own app and its collaboration with ibn who knows what the numbers really are anymore i mean you're in this space you know what what's our rule of thumb what are we supposed to do? How are we supposed to say whether something was well, you know, well regarded, watched by a lot of people or not when the streaming is so powerful? I have no idea. Did we like, what's the answer? I don't know either. I mean, you know, there's just guesstimates and you have the streaming partner saying, here's what our traffic seemed to be like. Yeah. I mean, Netflix just reported that they lost subscribers last quarter of the stock just tank 20%. Like streaming, it's hard. It's a hard. It's a lot. It's a lot.
Starting point is 00:07:47 tough biz. Hard out there on them streets, on them streamy streets. Well, in any event, depending on whatever grain of salt you want to apply and deploy when you're considering eyeballs on the masters, Scotty Sheffler ain't moving the needle. That's the point. And he won it in a wonderful fashion. We really enjoyed it. He enjoyed watching it. And he made down the road. That's exactly right. Now, personality wise, he's a quiet fellow. He's a humble fellow. He is not, you know, enlisting supporters by way of a gregarious personality and engaging personality. Oh, I don't know yet. It may be that we don't know him.
Starting point is 00:08:30 It seems perfectly lovely. That's all. Okay. You know. He doesn't have the golden child. Listen, coming out of the Masters, we talked very briefly, like maybe Scotty Schaeffler is just the next iteration of Jordan's Beath. he's the Texas ball striking guy who's going to win the Masters and a bunch of other majors. That Scotty sort of may be taking the throne from Jordan, but Jordan had a pretty tough week, it sounded like.
Starting point is 00:08:59 It sounded like not competing at the Masters was brutal for him. And as you're going, like, this is a guy who has it, whatever it is. Like, you know it when you see it, right? It's the Supreme Court judgment of pornography. like I can't tell you exactly what the definition is, but I know it when I see it. And you're making the point that Scotty may, for all the wonderful hitting and play and everything that we're seeing
Starting point is 00:09:28 and wonderful personality and all the scenes with this. Maybe Scotty doesn't have it in the way that Jordan Speath, when he's on Fuego, has it. Yes. So I'm not shit-talking Scotty. No. No. Brad Faxon, don't tell me to fuck off again.
Starting point is 00:09:44 No, don't. We love Scotty Sheffler. We do love Scottie. We were first on Scottie Sheffler because we watched him kick everybody's ass on the Corn Fairy tour. We knew about Scottie Sheffler. And we were so impressed by his performance. You got to watch it with your own eyeballs up there in San Francisco.
Starting point is 00:10:00 Yes. What a wonderful top five performance he pre put on for us. Yes. But we have that interesting juxtaposition of what kind of champion Scotty is and the way that he won the Masters. And then we have Jordan Speeth. at, you know, this wonderful event that really does occupy such a cool spot on the calendar, the way the guys all talk about it, it's such a beloved opportunity for them to all just exhale.
Starting point is 00:10:28 They collectively exhale. DJ exhaled. He was like, let me make my commitment. You know, my RBC. Here I am. Yeah, I arrived. I played. I like boats.
Starting point is 00:10:40 And I'm gone. And now I'm posting pictures of me catching gigantic two. tuna as he should as he should in advance of his wedding i mean he's got a wedding to plan nobody catches tuna like dustin johnson i'm going to leave that alone because i have other things to discuss with you um that will get me in more trouble hopefully so it was great and and and you know the thing that reminds us at least to me of the powerful being the powerful television being that is Jordan Spee. Was the live action version of him
Starting point is 00:11:18 chatting with the kids? Yes, the kids. After his round. There's all the kids. The kids were like, Jordan, Jordan, can we have your autograph? And Jordan's like, guys, let me try. And he's very patient and he's explaining it. I might be in a playoff. And I have to go do my practice and prepare myself.
Starting point is 00:11:36 But if I win, I promise to come back. And lo and behold, he comes back out. He's in the tart and plaid jacket. it's just magnificent, right? He's just got it. And there's nothing more fun than when he's playing well. Here's the thing about this golf tournament house. I'm not exactly sure that he won it so much as Shane Lowry missed very, very makeable putts on 16 and 17.
Starting point is 00:12:05 Sepsraka donkeys it into the native area on 18 and makes bogey to fall out of it. the playoff. Could have saved it with the good chip. Yeah, but it's not easy from down there. I didn't say it was easy. Coulda. And I just, this was one where, I mean, he was on the ropes. Let's put it that way.
Starting point is 00:12:26 The golden child was on the ropes. He was, he was getable. But look, you can't argue with the final round that he shot. And he went out and put a number on the board and did, you know, they couldn't. Now, you have expressed, look, we had Patrick Cantlay on this pod. and I really enjoyed the conversation. And I think I am more of a Patrick Cantlay fan than you are. But I don't know if that's because he's perpetually let you down in betting
Starting point is 00:12:53 or because you get annoyed by the thing he can't control, which is his resting, you know what face that seems to, you know, has he's always had to answer the question, like, why can't he celebrate? It's because for him, he's just always in the zone is what he says. But like, talk to me. Is this more fuel of your Cantlay dislike or distrust? Which is it? Yeah. So I, I'm glad you've given me this opportunity to clarify. I like Patrick Cantlay. And I like his promise. His story. And I like, well, the story is, you know, I don't, I'm, I'm extremely empathetic. And, you know, he comes from great, great golf pedigree. He did great things as an amateur.
Starting point is 00:13:41 Yeah. I enjoyed watching him at Aaron Hills. He's, he's sublime. And his life has, you know, has, you know, some, um, some down moments in it that he's, that he's, he's back. Like, I, I absolutely appreciate all of that about him. Yeah. So we're not going to say, we're not going to say, but we're going to say.
Starting point is 00:14:00 And my complaint is the style of, of winner that he is. Okay. And tell me about that. You, you know, because of my orientation. What I like best are guys that go out and take things, that go out and grab things. Yes. And it was my single biggest- You like the way Scotty won the Masters. That's absolutely right, notwithstanding the foreput that cost some betters, including our beloved pal, David Jacoby.
Starting point is 00:14:31 Tidy sums of money at the winning finishing score at minus 11. Yeah, it hurt us. It hurt. I didn't. No. I didn't touch that one. No, no, no. We delivered Bryson missed the cut, Tiger May cut, a lot of Colomarkawa,
Starting point is 00:14:47 cream of some, you know, whatever. Yes, yeah, we did it. Some young guns. Yeah, cream of some young guns parlay. It worked out great. We did our job that week. I feel like we did. Patrick did not.
Starting point is 00:15:01 It was right there for him. And what I wanted Sunday was a bounce back from Saturday. I felt like he had his sort of, you know, peering around the golf course kind of tournament on on Saturday. I wanted him to come out and win it on Sunday. And I'm here to report to you, Nate Dogg. I made two bets Sunday morning from the Dominican Republic. Why? I bet Patrick Cantlay to win this golf tournament. You never learn. Plus 350 odds. And well, I actually made three bets because on the can't lay note, I bet I live bet him also. No, I live bet him. when Shane Lowry got to 14 under
Starting point is 00:15:42 and Cantley was still at 12 under with the par 5 15th at front of them, I was like, oh, let me get on my guy. I can't lay right now. So I live bet him at plus odds in that moment as well. But the reason I felt comfortable doing that is because Nathan, I had myself a 20 to 1 ticket. Big healthy Jordan Speeat ticket. Oh, George Speeith. That's right.
Starting point is 00:16:04 20 to 1 Sunday morning, Jordan Speeth. when I woke up in the bleary-eyed Easter morning, and I'm looking at the card in front of me. Nice hangover down there in the DR. Nice. And George Speed 20 to 1 is like, what? With all the guys in front of them, like Shane Lowry and, you know, Patrick was the only competition and that was fine with me.
Starting point is 00:16:29 It played out exactly the way that, you know, my bleary-eyed Easter eyes, manifested, which was those two, those are the two guys that I think are going to win the golf tournament. Now, I would have been fine if Shane Lowry went out and won it because Shane's been playing great golf. He has.
Starting point is 00:16:46 I don't have any problem. He played great at the Masters. Why can't he win? The chip into the water on, I don't remember what number it was. The par three on the back. It was, it just rolled all the across and in. But to his credit,
Starting point is 00:17:04 he had very makeable birdie putts to to correct that wrong to fix that mistake over the remainder of the back and you know including a birdie put on 18 to put himself into the playoff just just couldn't get it done on any of it now HV3's put Harold Barners put on 18 the bomb and I thought you know this would be he was the guy that I would have been most surprised by and I was thrilled with him getting to 12 under and having the chance to make birdie on 18. A bomb at Harbor Town after the bomb he made in Saudi Arabia to win that golf tournament, that had a kind of resonance to me.
Starting point is 00:17:45 Yeah. By the way, the chip in the water, Shane Larry's chip in the water was on 14. 14, there you go. Right before 15. And still had chances to make birdies to put himself in position. Any part 15 and then missed putts on 16, 70. Like, he really should have won that golf tournament. But Patrick Cantley also had.
Starting point is 00:18:04 several opportunities, including the playoff, caught the bad luck of the fried egg on his approach in the playoff. But my only complaint with 3.5.14, by the way. That's it. That's my, that's it. His putting has abandoned him.
Starting point is 00:18:22 His strong suit to me, you know, has been the putting. And we lost it. He lost a stroke in a third this week, putting. He beat Bryson with his putter in the playoff last year during the FedEx Cup playoffs less and less impressive doesn't it but well because you know my knock was the bogey that he made on 17 and he also bogeed 17 at east lake and so he won the FedEx
Starting point is 00:18:48 cup you know thing and he won memorial because John Rom got COVID like you know there's always I got it stuff I just want him to go win go win a golf tournament that's all yeah yeah not a knock not a knock on can't like also you know like very much the personality that came out from Cantlay at the Rider Cup. Just want him to go win, go win, go grab one by the throat and take it down. Classy leaderboard though. Look at all the names we just went through.
Starting point is 00:19:17 Guys that have won on tour this year, guys that have won abroad this year, guys that are in super good form. It was a terrific tournament as a breather. It was. Most masters. So, thrilled to have Jordan Speath back in the winner circle. One thing that I retweeted that I noted, and this
Starting point is 00:19:33 is, you know, keep an eye on it for for both of us. What's this? Jordan Speath has now won two times since the last time that Justin Thomas has won a golf tournament. I am acutely aware of this, and it's a thing. Between Thomas and Rahm, it's a thing.
Starting point is 00:19:48 Now, look, for Rom, I'm going to be generous because he shot the lowest four-round score at Eastlake, which is not a full year ago. And smoked everybody at the Ryder Cup. And except for Scotty Sheffler, who beat his ass in single. Yes.
Starting point is 00:20:05 And he also, you know, I'll always give him that win at Memorial. He's whatever number of wins he ends up at, I'm going to give, I'm going to always give him one extra. So Rahm, I'm sort of less harsh. He got the US open after that. But yes. Yeah, yeah. Right. Which was the golf gods doing him right.
Starting point is 00:20:26 So right. Not worried about Rom. The golf gods corrected that unfair. outcome, but still awaiting. This is just my position on Cantlay, just wanted to go win one. That's all. Now, he has paired up in really intriguing matchup. He's got a chance, baby.
Starting point is 00:20:46 With Zander this week, that's going to be fun. And we are going to talk about the Zurich, but there is some other business that we need to handle Nate Dogg, couple very quick. Well, we have the name of the plaintiff in the lawsuit against the PGA tour. His name is Robert Garrigus. with Geregis. So this is Geregis v. PGA Tour in his effort to get permission to go play in the, what is it, Centurion? How do you say that?
Starting point is 00:21:18 Who cares? The first event on the Saudi tour circuit, the Greg Norman Saudi Tour circuit. Right. And, you know, they have announced a couple different things since the last time we checked in on. We need a name for this week in the Saudi because we're not calling it by the live golf or live golf or whatever nonsense that is. And we're not going to use, you know, terms that are disrespectful to the Khashoggi family. Okay. We need a name.
Starting point is 00:21:57 Let's open source this to the. the fairway rolling homies out there yeah yeah booty buddies and and and gambling gals yeah all of them everybody anybody with an idea of this weekend in the Saudi uh you know maybe something with mbs i don't know kush kushner kushner got two billion but this is the thing the two interesting things to me that i want your reaction to in the first place um i mean robert garrig is awesome so good he's got He's 200th in FedEx Cup. I mean, right now, first of all, he's 45. Yes.
Starting point is 00:22:34 So, like, who cares? Who cares? Who cares open? It's the who cares open. Yeah. Except for it, they are prepared to spend extraordinary amounts of money. And this was, Norman's been giving continuous interviews, an interview that he gave in the last couple weeks.
Starting point is 00:22:52 He finally said the thing out loud, which is what you and I have been sort of, musing over and both on this podcast and between our own conversations with people in the know on this. The Saudis are just prepared to pay billions of dollars for the sports washing effect of this. They have no concern it doesn't seem for making money for this. This is not a business. A viable enterprise. Right. And Norman said, They're prepared to spend up to $3 billion over these next handful of years. He said that in an interview. Yes.
Starting point is 00:23:34 This is marketing spend for a completely different business, which is the investment vehicle in Saudi Arabia, the oil and gas business, whatever tourist, like the kingdom's image itself. That's what it is. Now, House, do you blame Robert Garrigus at 45 years old? He's never going to win again. he's definitely not going to top 10 again. He's made $162,000 on tour this year. Do you blame him for going and trying to shoot fish in a barrel and win $4 million at the very end of his career
Starting point is 00:24:11 if it's not already over? It's an impossible thing to answer because I haven't, you know, this is not me ducking the question. He's at the end of his professional golf career. I don't know what his designs are in terms of a champions tour kind of pursuit.
Starting point is 00:24:35 Gargis is not going to be a champion's tour guy. Look, this guy leaving makes not a shits bit of difference to the PGA tour. It doesn't hurt anybody who came before it or anybody who came after it. What are his career options outside of golf? Because golf is about to be out of his picture, out of the picture for him. So from the perspective of him weighing alternatives that are in front of him about how to provide for his family, I can put myself there mindset-wise. I cannot, under any circumstances, countenance taking money from that regime. That's me. I wouldn't do it. I can't do it. I would never do it. I don't endorse it. I don't support it. I won't watch it. I won't do anything that's
Starting point is 00:25:22 within the control of my own life and dominion and domain. Other than on this show talking about the curiosity of it, because it does have an impact on the business of the tour, and that is a focus of the show. And we have been kind of fascinated by the response by the tour on a whole slew of fronts to do things to innovate that product. And that's something we both interested in. Well, did that sound like a duck?
Starting point is 00:25:53 Nah. I mean, the part that troubles me about Norman's response is they're perfectly happy to use young, up-and-coming guys who are struggling, who desperately need the money to support their family, right? Again, we make the joke all the time. What's the difference between corned fairy tour and a large pepperoni pizza? and the answer is large pepperoni pizza is enough to feed your family because the you know the persons on the corn fray tour
Starting point is 00:26:27 are not great we've talked about that sort of ad nauseum but it feels like they're ready to get the commitment up front of some young guys who will chase the money only to entice the guys they really want to go wait that guy's over there
Starting point is 00:26:47 winning $4 million, fuck it, I'm coming. And then that guy takes the young guy who initially committed and took the risk spot, and that guy can't come back to the PG tour and he's banned for life. Like, they're totally happy to use those guys as pawns. Except those guys might be getting
Starting point is 00:27:03 $2 million guaranteed. Like, we don't know what the guarantee is. We know what they have to. You can win $2 million on tour over the course of a couple years. Like, come on, Robert Garrigus has made $150,000 this year. but you have to be good there is no guarantee you know it's i i understand sort of the sizing it up i'm more interested in the impact on name image image and likeness for amateurs because they've said
Starting point is 00:27:30 the norman also said out loud that they're going to you know kind of open the door for amateurs and the great great big giant loophole of um preserving your amateur status with the name image and likeness stuff, that's kind of interesting, right? Yeah. Look, from the legal questions perspective and the end around all of the chaos that is the NIL right now,
Starting point is 00:27:56 that's all interesting. I don't love the notion that you'll bust chuck a bunch of guys who are early as soon as they're going to be the ones to come over, they're going to win the money, they're going to make it a viable going concern, and then they'll run those guys
Starting point is 00:28:13 over with a bus as soon as, you know, Bubba finally feels like his, he can say yes. You know, and those guys, and then those guys are stuck. They come back to the States and they can't play any other, any other tour because the European tour and the PGA tour together and they're screwed. So that's the part that
Starting point is 00:28:31 I didn't love about it all. But is Phil going to play the PGA? Is Phil going to just double down and go all in and come back. Because what we're seeing on the line house is
Starting point is 00:28:47 some chatter that's like, well, what did Phil really say? Like, was it so bad? He's being canceled for his words. Is there a chance that we see Phil just say fuck it and go play the live... What are we calling it? The what tour?
Starting point is 00:29:04 The... Dead Golf Tour? We just had a good name for it. Not MBS. The Kushner Open. We're going to call it the Kushner Open. That's the answer. Until somebody on Twitter tells us differently. I think anything is possible with Phil. Because there's a while where you thought we weren't going to see him this year.
Starting point is 00:29:25 Well, I don't think he's going to play any PGA events. I don't think he's going to play in anything that would have the effect of bolstering the tour. Like he's not going to, I don't think, reappear on. Out of spite or brand concern? Both. But like he's not going to now bolster the, the tour having, you know, been putting, having put himself in this position of, of openly saying, I don't want to do anything that's going to help the tour any further. So, you know,
Starting point is 00:29:56 he had to get. He apologized for that. No, he didn't. And it was, it wasn't a business apology. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Fair enough. He apologized for to, to everybody whose feelings got hurt. That's what he did. Right. But I don't, I don't, I don't think that, you know, we might see him. play in one of those events. Like that's, that's not inconceivable to me. I don't believe he's going to come defend his PGA championship. You don't. No.
Starting point is 00:30:22 And I also don't think he's going to play in the U.S. Open, even though he did register to create that pathway. I applaud you for not ducking that question and putting that on the record. No, I don't think he's going to play. I think that's going to, it's going to continue to be that way. Because he will be the story. Whatever tournament, you know, whenever he reappears, he's going to be the dominant
Starting point is 00:30:42 one of the dominant storyline. How's that not like Tiger being like, it's going to hurt like hell, I might as well do it now instead of next year when it's going to hurt even more. I think he would prefer to have those eyeballs
Starting point is 00:30:53 and all that traction go to the Cushner Open. Go to the Cushner event. Is he going to play the Cushner event? I don't know. I have no idea. I have no intelligence. Okay.
Starting point is 00:31:06 That's literally the case. I never have any intelligence. All right. my eagle enthusiasts, how about this? Our good pals at Fandul are inviting you and me to just step up to the T and take a swing at betting the PGA tour on Fandual Sportsbook. Right now, new customers can place their first PGA tour bet risk free, and if you do not win, you will get up to $1,000 back.
Starting point is 00:31:40 That's right, my version. buddies. If you've been thinking about joining Fandul, there is no better time to get in on the action. The app is crazy, easy to use. They have an enormous range of betting options. Of course,

Starting point is 00:34:53 And honest, God, who gives his shit, Nate, dog, who cares? I mean, we say that,
Starting point is 00:34:59 and then we're going to have all the guys on this podcast. Oh, I would gladly talk to any of those guys. Yeah, when we do this, when we do this, know that we're just doing, yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:08 In a heartbeat, any one of those guys can come on this podcast. any time they want. And I'll say, like, why do I want to go? Why would I put on television to watch an eight handicap? I don't give his shit. And by the way, he's not an eight handicap. He's much worse than that. And by the way, Aaron Rogers was by far the best golfer in that thing went off of Montana. Yeah. And he, he played more like a two. And Brady played like a like a 14, which is exactly what I expect to see more of, except for I'm not going to watch it because I've already seen Tom Brady slap around a golf course like a dick. Rip his pants.
Starting point is 00:35:41 Yeah, who cares? I mean, we are back at the wind golf club in Vegas. Yeah. The only guy I'm like, we've seen. I want to see pet. Yeah. You want to see Alan. I do want to see Alan.
Starting point is 00:35:52 I want to see him, you know. He played AT&T. Can he hit a 400 yard drive? He's got that big boy, you know, in him. Like I would like to see him train with Bryson and then come out and, you know, try and fire a peg down, you know, down there, fire a pellet down there, 400 yards. That would be, you could. you could catch my attention for four and a half minutes because there's no gambling,
Starting point is 00:36:17 not gambling on that. It's nonsense. Like, you know, like, if I wanted to gamble on, on dickhead double-digit handicaps, I'll go up to Columbia and sit in the chairs on 18 and watch the guys tee off on 18 and just gamble on that. I enjoy it much more. And I know exactly where the drinks are coming from, Nate, Doug. That's what, that's what you and I do every time we go on a weekend together. That's a fact. It's exactly right. We just gamble on that. That makes more sense. Enough of that. We're at kind of the silly stage of the tour, which is actually quite excellent. We have the lone team format event. It's the two-man at TPC, Louisiana. I will make the annual recurring plea to the powers that be. Can we please get some women involved? Can we please?
Starting point is 00:37:10 have an event on tour where a PGA tour person plays with an LPGA person and we get to watch that. That's interesting to me. It'll be the women are great. They deserve the TV time. The personalities,
Starting point is 00:37:27 I think, across the board. Even some of the not as well-known Asian players have great personalities that, you know, I'm talking about on the ladies tour that just deserved the time of day. That's all. So annual recurring, please make this happen. What are we waiting for? That's it. There you go. I wish they'd mini scramble too. That would be great. I mean, so the two person mini scramble. We're on another Pete die course. So more tight fairways, more small greens, more hazards and stuff all over the place, bunkers, every which way. The format is first round and third round. Best ball, which is, as you and I know,
Starting point is 00:38:14 well, I'm not going to explain best ball. Everybody who listens to the podcast knows what best. No, you should. Because it's not scramble. It is the individual player playing his ball and his teammate will both play the hole and one of them will make a score potentially lower than the other. And that's the score that counts for the team. Right.
Starting point is 00:38:32 And Friday, Sunday, alternate shot, which is fucking awesome. Yes. I love alternate shot so much in this format. And we got such a wonderful up close and personal experience with the intrigue of it when Louis Eustazen blasted a ball into the water on the first playoff hole. Last year, Cam Smith of Mark Leashman, Cam Smith, that name keeps coming up, won this event beating Louis Eustazen and Charles Schwartzel on the first playoff hole because Louis blasted one into the water because it's all turned shot. It's fucking great. I love it so much. I still grab the Beezer this year.
Starting point is 00:39:10 I mean, I know Louie's probably hurt, but I also think Louis's feelings are hurt from this event. Louis, my wallet is hurt because I bet $10 on Louis over at like 60 to one odds to do something in the masters. Bad decision. What he did was exit stage right as quickly as possible. Yes. So the format 82 player teams, they go, do it.
Starting point is 00:39:34 Yeah, top 33 and ties, makes a cut. Wonderful. Perfect. exactly the right number. They definitely go to Commander's Palace one night this week and just have a delectable delicious dinner. It's the best. You really need to have an afternoon tea time, like to plot it out. If you're going to have Commander's Palace, make sure you have an afternoon tea time. Do not expect to wake up and feel your very, very best because you're going to overindulge and it's a glorious overindulging. We've both done it, Nick Dogg.
Starting point is 00:40:02 Crawdatties flaming desserts. It's where it's at. Speaking of flaming desserts, who's your favorite twosome. Not not counting Mark Hubbard. Right. I mean, how can you, how can you not be just Googly-eyed for Morikow and Hovlin this week? Yes. All eyes on those two. Colin put out requests for music for the walk-up song. Right. On Twitter. Howland's not on Twitter, which is hilarious. And did you, did you see any good suggestions? Do you have your own good suggestion for them? No, I don't, I don't have i didn't come up with anything i my suggestion for everybody is um the uh rage against the machine version of the epmd classic i'm hausen because i want everybody to come up to i'm housing that's what i want it's my that's my request so that way if you ask me for a suggestion my suggestion
Starting point is 00:40:59 is or you can play the epmd version of them housing but the rage version really gets it across the gets the point across this team is a stripe show i mean together Stripe show. Together, they've got the highest average strokes gained approach per round the season between the two of them of any other team. And they're 50% higher than the second team. And that second team is Cam Smith and Mark Leishman. These guys, yes, these guys, if he took their best ball at the Ryder Cup on Sunday when they played each other, Kyle Porter tweeted this out. They shot a 59. Yes. I love it so much. speaking of Stripe Show, this will be the first appearance of Scotty Sheffler.
Starting point is 00:41:41 And man, oh man, Ryan Palmer, what an OG. What a Yoda. The golf Yoda, Ryan Palmer. Can you explain it? Well, first of all, he's got the Texas connection. So that helps, right? The Speeth and Schaeffler, not a heavy lift. He's playing with Spieth and Schaeffler.
Starting point is 00:41:58 He's played with ROM. Yeah. So that's the ROM part, I feel like he did some work. Is he a drug dealer or something? He's a good time dealer. Everybody knows are going to have a great time. If you play with Ryan Palmer, great, that's it. Ryan Palmer, great hang.
Starting point is 00:42:17 That's all you can say. Tip your head. I absolutely love it. I mean, I wish I was smart enough to run a game like that. What a racket. Scotty Sheffler, Ryan Palmer. That's how he stays on tour. It's great.
Starting point is 00:42:31 It's really brilliant. He just gets a two-year exemption by winning. with one of these guys. Now, in the same... For a number one player in the world. Terrific. Same category, I feel like Stripe show-wise, except for, you know, tiny bit out of form
Starting point is 00:42:46 with Zander. I'm very intrigued by Zander and Cantley. I know they have good vibes. I know that they're pals. Because they go to... They have good vibes together because they go to Napa. They have terrible vibes for your wallet. We're not talking about them
Starting point is 00:43:02 for the wallet. That's not... We wouldn't not make that recommendation. Just, you know, eyeballs-wise, it's going to be fun. But isn't this the event where if they win, everybody's going to roll their eyes and be like, yeah, that's not a real win, Zander. That's not a real win, Patrick. That is hilarious. I love that angle. Maybe I'll play a top five on them.
Starting point is 00:43:20 Because if Morikow and Hovlin win, we will definitely say it was a real win. Oh, for some reason with those two guys, it's going to be like, no, no, it doesn't count. It's the most Xander and can't lay win. So that means I have to at least bet the top five. That's a great point. I'm glad that you just pointed out to me. We have some countrymen playing together, which is always the case in this thing, which is fun. Mito Pereira
Starting point is 00:43:45 and Joaquin Neiman. You got to love that. You got to love that. I kind of like that one. I don't hate the numbers on it at 24 to 1. Yeah, exactly. Neiman has been very good as of late. Yes, yes, exactly right. One that has caught my eye that I think I'm going to get down on, a tiny bit. Shamis Power and Graham McDowell. Now, Shamis Power, this combo is available at 36 to 1,
Starting point is 00:44:13 so it feels like you could play it, you know, top five, top 10 also and get reasonable odds. Seamus Powers played this event, and I had tip to Reed Fowler. He called this to my attention as I'm doing my research on this. He played with David Hearn,
Starting point is 00:44:27 and he collected both a top 10 and a top five, Shamis Power, at this event playing with David Hearn, Now, Graham McDowell is a whole different kind of cat altogether. Yeah. Rider Cup vet, short game wizard. And maybe like a stabilizing force, I think that's an interesting combo. What do you got?
Starting point is 00:44:47 Who do you have your eyes on? Well, I like Ben On and Sung Jay. Speaking of countrymen. At 32 to 1. Ben On is playing great on the corned ferry tour right now. He's got a win. He's got some top fives. he looks like he is absolutely ready to come back.
Starting point is 00:45:07 And he is talking like he wants to be the number one player on that tour, which would get him into the players and everything else. So that is the odds at 32 to 1 are not awesome, but those guys are playing really great golf right now. So staring at that, I like SEP Straka and Grace and Sig at 55 to 1. Sepp's playing good golf. I mean, we watched it. He was right there.
Starting point is 00:45:33 And Grayson's been one of the good players who came out of the corned fairy crop this year. It hasn't torn it up, but he's sitting there. He seems potentially getable. So I like those guys. Look, I don't hate Sahith Tagala and Bo Hossler, who are sitting here at 91. We sort of forgot about Sahith.
Starting point is 00:45:56 I also don't mind Joel Damon and Stefan Yeager sitting there at 160 to 1. because Joel has been competing as of late. He was in the mix in this last tournament. And Yeager, like, has been such a great corn fray tour player. He's been needing the breakout on the big tour. He's never really played as well as he ought to when he comes up here. Joel's going to keep him loose. That pair may do something.
Starting point is 00:46:22 They just collected, I mean, Damon just collected another, it was a top 10 or top 15? Yeah, he fell down to 12, but yeah. Oh, okay, yeah. So top 15, he was right there. And I saw his name on the leaderboard on Sunday at Harbertown. I was like, come on, J.D. Let's get one across the line. He played, it was great golf across the board.
Starting point is 00:46:43 I'm looking at some. Haas and Haas. Well, definitely not that combo. No. I don't know which way to parse. Really, I'll just call it, the Kushner Open. Yeah, with Tommy two gloves? Well, no. No. I thought you're going to say Garrigas and Tommy two gloves are playing together.
Starting point is 00:47:11 I mean, that's like the all. They are playing together. I know. But that's not the direction I'm going. Okay. These two guys were first and second in Saudi Arabia at the event earlier. Bubba. Yes. HV3. Yes. And neither, both of whom continue to be rumored as having heightened interest in the Kushner. circuit. Can they play well together? This is the thing, right? It's very interesting to me. 28 to 1. Now, HV3 really did a great job of validating his performance at the Masters with the performance at Harbortown. And he hung in there. He was like he just couldn't get a put to fall. He had a tiny bit of bad luck. He was Greenside on 15 and 2 and couldn't get up and down for birdie. That would have been enough.
Starting point is 00:48:03 And it was just because of a bad bunker shot. And his short game is usually much more reliable. But sit there at 28 to 1. Like that's a little bit of an interesting pairing to me. My chalk play is just Billy Horschell and Sam Burns. I mean, I think that's the smartest money. That's 12 to 1 on the board right now. Billy Horschell, legendary at this venue, won it in the individual stroke play era,
Starting point is 00:48:34 and Sam Burns quietly top five on tour putting wise. So in the alternate shot competitions, love Sam Burns getting hot with a short stick. And we have this on again, off again thing. The last time Sam Burns had a poor showing, he came out the next week and won. So here we are, Sam Burns off of a miscut at the Masters. Would it surprise you at all if he came out with Billy Ho-ho and they bulldog their way around to a win? No. No.
Starting point is 00:49:03 Exactly right. Not in the slightest. That's that's that's the chalky chalk chalk, chalk pick. Do you do you have any other nuggets for us? No, I mean, I think that's a really good list. I, this is worth watching to watch Mark Leishman, Cam Smith, Victor and Colin and Cantlay and Shafleigh along. with maybe the Burns Horshal pairing go around this thing together.
Starting point is 00:49:30 Yeah, that's right. Look, Gooch and Homa might play super well. There's just some fun possibilities here. It's a lot of pick a name out of the hat. Because all these combinations, any of those guys can get hot
Starting point is 00:49:44 and you say, oh, you know, oh, I don't regret it. I'm not upset. It doesn't surprise me. Yeah. There's high variability here because what happens in this tournament in a lot of cases,
Starting point is 00:49:56 is a guy will go pick somebody way down who doesn't get a lot of starts. It's sort of a help out your buddy tournament. Well, there is Hendrik Norlander and Alex Noren in that kind of vibe, right? Sure. Yes, exactly. Or, you know, way down the list, the odds list,
Starting point is 00:50:14 like a bunch of these guys are only getting starts because there's somebody who has better status who's just helping them get a start. It's tough out there, right? People with conditional status and the like. Yes. that's why that's you know two gloves and robert garrigas well uh lots to uh watch lots to enjoy we are back next week here on the fairaway rolling and we will have our reviews in on tpc
Starting point is 00:50:43 louisiana you know that they will show us some of that delicious food out there hopefully um you know they think it's not just ben yes like give us let us see some of the crawfish. Let us see some of the et tufe. Let's go ahead and get New Orleans dirty a little bit. Some dirty rice. How about that? Is that too much to ask for? House eats four. House eats five. Yeah. The oysters, you know, some charbroid oysters for sure. And then we're in Mexico the following week, the Mexico open at a venue that I don't believe
Starting point is 00:51:19 has ever hosted a PGA tour of it. So kind of an interesting thing. And we're working our way to the Byron Nelson and then your neck of the woods. Yeah. Have a nail, baby. Do I want to go to that? Like, am I interested in going to see that? I don't know. Let's see if Mark Oberg gets in. Well, that's one, that would be one compelling reason. And then Rory is the defending champion of that event. So if Rory comes here, I feel like I have to go see him.
Starting point is 00:51:46 You do. He's, as the original truther, it would behoove you to go see him. All right. Well, there, there we have it. Birdie buddies by par saving pals, my eagle enthusiast. Let's all enjoy some, some wonderful Louisiana golf. This two-man format is a hoot. And hopefully those would be some good food out there. We're back next week. Until then, please, let's hit them straight out there.
