Starting point is 00:00:00 Okay, we're going to get this away, like, done off the top this one, so we don't remember like 20 minutes in since we have a guest. Hello, listeners, this is fairy tale fix. I'm Abby. I'm Kelsey. And this is the podcast where we read classic fairy and folk tales and quote unquote fix them for a modern audience or not. or just make them more fun for us. And today we are joined by one of my favorite people in the whole world. In fact, I have two of my favorite people in the universe with me right now.
Starting point is 00:01:05 And it makes me so happy. But we are joined today by my sibling, Madeline Lamwell. Maddie, welcome. I love you so much. I'm so happy you're here. Hello. Yes, I'm welcome. Mermaid is for the best guest speakers.
Starting point is 00:01:20 We're so excited to have you here. I have been wanting to be on a Mermaid episode for so long. Thank you for inviting me. I love you both so much and I'm so excited to be here. Yes, you've been, you told me a couple years ago that you already had the story in mind that you wanted to tell. and things just finally lined up this year where we were able to do it. And I'm so excited. I know.
Starting point is 00:01:51 I don't work Saturdays anymore. I know. Nice. We can hang out now. We can all gain. Oh, so exciting. Yeah. Before we get into the story, we have a couple of standard questions that we ask our guests.
Starting point is 00:02:08 The first one being, what's your favorite childhood fairy tale? and how would you fix it? Wait, before you answer, I'm dying to know, Abby, as Maddie's sibling. Do you know the answer to this? I don't. I don't think I do. I'm sure the answer won't surprise me or maybe halfway through Maddie telling us about it. I'll go like, oh, shit, or oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:35 But I can't guess right now. You'll know immediately. You'll know immediately. Okay. So it's not a quote unquote typical fairy tale. I don't believe I've ever seen it in any other media other than this one very old animated cartoon about fairy tales called the Grimm's Brothers fairy tales. And it's done by a Japanese studio. that actually used to be Miyazaki studio.
Starting point is 00:03:13 So he worked there. Cool. And then it evolved into, you know, what it is today. But it's like a lot of those animators then went to work. I remember wearing up the taste. Yeah. On those. And so it's like a combination of traditional European fairy tales with this like or.
Starting point is 00:03:38 And then, and then like kind of like, like Japanese folklore. It's like a combination of these things with an anime, um, uh, drawing style. And the folk tale that I loved from it so much is called the tale of Mr. Fox. Ah! Okay. Um, because it's so good. It's that, that one is so good. We watched that ad nauseum. And then also like, I remember when Kelsey and I did All-Fer
Starting point is 00:04:12 on this podcast. Because I remembered watching the cartoon from that series of All-Fur, which with like she had like the dress made of moonlight, the dress made of starlight, the dress made of spun gold. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:28 And then the coat of a thousand furs. And the coat of a thousand furs, exactly. And I thought that it was already super fucked up. And then we read the original and fairy tale and it was worse. But yeah. Yeah. It's always worse.
Starting point is 00:04:40 It's always worse. But that's the same series. But yes, I also do remember the tale of Mr. Fox. Continue. I will rewatch these to this day. I stand by these little animated stories. You'll have to send it to me. I need to see it.
Starting point is 00:04:58 I have them all on YouTube. I will send them to you after we're done recording. And you will know. Yes. I'm so excited. So the tale of Mr. Fox is about a very wealthy nine-tailed fox that lives in a well-to-do town. He has a beautiful life, a wonderful manor home, a great life.
Starting point is 00:05:24 There's nothing he could want more. And so he's off to go do some fishing, to bring home some fish to his family, and he's looking at himself in the pond, and he's talking to himself and going, oh, what else? could I want? My life is perfect. My wife is perfect. I'm perfect. What could I? What could I want? I love that. And then, uh-oh. Yes. But then a little demon fox with, um, who's all red and he has like a little yellow hat, a pointed yellow hat. And he appears to him kind of like out of the, the mist of his mind. And he's like, really? Really? Is your wife faithful? Do you have everything? There's something wrong. And you know there's something wrong. And I interpret this to be Mr. Fox's own like anxiety. But it's like this little demon creature. And so basically he starts to get really anxious and he goes home. And through a series of events, he ends up deciding to pretend to die. so that he can see if his wife is actually faithful to him.
Starting point is 00:06:39 That's very dramatic. It's so dramatic. Like this fox is fucking nuts. And so he pretends to die. And so he's laid out like on the carpet with like a little bit little flowers to his chest. And I forgot to mention there's also a little cat maid who works in the house with them. And so, you know, I kind of feel like this is like a little bit like the Odyssey and the wife is Penelope. All these suitors start to show up at the house because they've heard that Mr. Fox has died.
Starting point is 00:07:17 And so they want to marry Mrs. Fox. And so all of these foxes come in. She's so hot. Oh, my God. They animated her so fucking cute. She's so gorgeous. She's a smoke show. Continuing the tradition of hot cartoon foxes.
Starting point is 00:07:33 indeed and so the subsequent suitors come in in numbers and so the first suitor has one tail the next suitor has two tails the next suitor has three tails and so on and so forth and Mr. Fox isn't worried he's like
Starting point is 00:07:52 I've got nine just kind of on the yeah he's like I got nine no one can catch me it's like look at me just and finally the ninth suitor comes and it's this hot, beautiful, nine-tailed fox and coat tails and a top hat and a little goatee. And she's like, Mrs. Fox at this point has been talking to her maid. And the maid is like, man, you got to be able to keep this house. You need, how are you going to have money?
Starting point is 00:08:27 You don't want to be poor, do you? And so Mrs. Fox is finally like, I mean, I think around suitors. she's like, yeah, I got to give these men a chance. Like, how am I going to support myself? And so finally, she accepts the nine-tailed fox's suit. And then Mr. Fox like rises up from the dead and chases them all out of the house. And like, and then the house, like, he like ends up like breaking down the house, chasing them all around. And this like whole like comedic ending.
Starting point is 00:09:02 And so finally, the other nine-tailed fox suitor, the wife and the maid are chased out of the house. And he's just sitting in the ruins of this beautiful little manner with the little devil that's near him. And he realizes that he's been manipulated this entire time. And like, that's the end. Oh, my gosh. I love that. How would you fix it? I mean, as you watch, as you watch,
Starting point is 00:09:32 this movie, you're obviously not on the side of Mr. Fox because he's a weak man who does not trust his wife. So in the end, I would, I would want the wife to have the house. I would rather him have been kicked out of the house. But it's, it's a hilarious little, like, morality tale. Totally. Oh, I love that. Yeah. I'm so excited to watch that. Who ruined his life with his own anxiety with his own anxiety and his own like mistrustfulness you know and there are more tales like videos in that same like style on going on a deep dive today they did the frog prince full series they do all fur which i think is a really it's i i like the cartoon version better than the version we read on the show for sure amen i'm like i want to find it what do you search for um it's like
Starting point is 00:10:26 the Grimm's fairy tales and it's like look up animated cartoon and they have all of the episodes on YouTube. So look up Mr. Fox. It's Grimm's fairy tale of Mr. Fox. Grimm's fairy tale of the series. Oh, there we go.
Starting point is 00:10:43 Abby's got it. We have a full playlist. Oh, I love the animation. Yay! That's what I'm doing after we record today. I'm going on a deep dive. I'm going to lay down on my couch
Starting point is 00:10:55 and watch these on my phone. Yay. I might watch you too. Yeah. That's awesome. Is that what you would say got you into fairy tales or because I know, you both also were very into into the woods. The Broadway recording. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:16 With Joanne Gleason and Bernadette Peters and Chip Dale, right? No, Chip Zane or Chip Zian or something. Chip Z-I-N. Chip Z-Z-N. Yeah. Okay. Abby remembers. But I think mom and dad have always inundated us with folklore, fairy tale, magic.
Starting point is 00:11:39 I mean, it's hard to be a 90s kid and not be a Disney kid, right? Mm-hmm. You know, I feel like, I don't know. It's never left my bones. All right. Was there another question? I feel like we used to ask people, like, what Disney princess would you be?
Starting point is 00:11:59 I like to ask, okay, I feel like I that question got misinterpreted. I wanted to ask who is your favorite Disney princess as like kind of a tongue and cheek question. Not who you relate to the most. Not like who you would be as a Disney princess. Which one do you just like the best? Well, okay, because I was like,
Starting point is 00:12:19 I don't think I'd be a Disney princess. I think I would be Prince Phillips horse. Oh, fuck yeah. Samson. No carrots. No carrots. I really love that horse. I'm like, yeah, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:12:35 But like brave, intelligent, food motivated. Adorable. Adorable. Beautiful. Disney really gets horses, right? I got to say. The bit with the horse, Disney's got it down on lock. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:53 Well, I mean, do you have a favorite Disney princess? Ooh, do I have a... I love Marita. I love Tiana. Hell, yeah. I don't know, because it's like, who counts as a Disney princess? I mean, Joanna. Oh, hell yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:14 She counts as a Disney princess. Hell yeah, she does. For anyone matched with her. Joanna. What is it? Rescuers Downanda? Yes, yeah. The lizard is stealing.
Starting point is 00:13:27 eggs. Yeah. She's so cute. I'm obsessed with her. She's a total Disney princess. Mm-hmm. Yeah. I love Joanna.
Starting point is 00:13:41 Salad. These are my eggs. These are not Joanna eggs. Juana's eggs. I don't know why, but the animation style, the way she, like, eats those eggs whole, too. They just, like, look appetizing. They do look good. like really satisfying the way she holds it in her tongue and like yeah
Starting point is 00:14:01 full wraparound on the egg I would that be a neat trick all right well we are so excited to have you here um is there any do you want to promote anything or like anywhere people can find you or yeah I don't have a Facebook I don't have a Twitter or X or whatever it's called. But if you
Starting point is 00:14:36 want to find me, you can find me on Instagram at Coffee underscore T underscore chocolate. And you can see some of the best most gorgeous baked goods you've ever seen in your life. Yeah. And then, yeah,
Starting point is 00:14:54 if you ever want to order chocolate from me and you're in the California area. Let me know and I got you. Your truffles are so fucking good. Thank you. And they're gorgeous. They're so pretty. Is it bad that I've actually, I've like, I have given some truffles like as gifts,
Starting point is 00:15:15 but every time I order, it's mostly just for me. Because I love them. Whenever you order, I think of you and I make them extra special. Oh, thank you. Yeah, they're so pretty. And like they, you always like put the coolest flavors together too. Like, um, what was the one of the last ones was like vanilla and rose. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:15:38 It was a vanilla rose. Mm-hmm. And then I did a Yuzu olive oil. Oh, which is then I do good. It was so good. I was quite impressed with myself. Mm-hmm. And then it was just like a salted caramel.
Starting point is 00:15:51 Mm-hmm. Yeah. Like an oldie but a goody. An oldie but a goody. Yeah, I haven't done any chocolates since then. Wait, no, I lied. I did. I just was recently at a friend's 40th birthday party, and I made them like 40 or 50 chocolate bonbons.
Starting point is 00:16:10 Some with the vanilla rose and then some with the salted caramel. And they were a huge hit. Hell yeah. Of course. You also do like really good like fruit flavors as well. Like you did like, you were doing like some really tasty stuff with apricots. Oh my God. That was my favorite one.
Starting point is 00:16:26 What was it? Apricot ganache. So fucking good. I don't even like fruit candy like that and I guzzled those down. Yeah, that was pretty good. I was actually really tickled of how I did that. And like a passion fruit, something? It was passion fruit and something else.
Starting point is 00:16:43 It was a passion fruit caramel. Oh, it was so fucking good. Yeah. Like never flavors that I would like imagine together, but it worked so well. like very innovative. Thank you. I try. Maddie's a genius.
Starting point is 00:17:03 So Maddie, what mermaid story are you telling us today? Okay. So I'm going to tell you a tale from timeless tales from many lands. And it's a Reader's Digest and Thal Oh. And this is what it looks like. My grandma got it for me.
Starting point is 00:17:32 Grandma Kathy got it for me. She got you? She got you that? Yeah. Yeah. And so there are some stories that I know about in here, like the yellow Thunder Dragon and the Voyage of Sinbad, the Sailor, Hansel and Gretel, blah, blah, blah. And then this.
Starting point is 00:17:52 this one that I read called Ja'eil and Mulwara is from Australia but as I was doing research trying to find out more about Australian folklore and mythology
Starting point is 00:18:12 and Aboriginal dreaming stories which is what they're called instead of really like folklore It's called dreaming stories, which is like that. Like, it's like, it's supposed to be a representation of a time before time where beings shaped the physical and spiritual world. So, like, the dreaming stories are like a blend of past, present and future.
Starting point is 00:18:42 That's so cool. Yeah. Yeah. And so I was trying to look up more dreaming stories about mermaids because there are mermaids in Aboriginal mythology. and folk tales. But they're mermaids from what I can read. And all of this is on the internet.
Starting point is 00:19:02 I'm not a historian. I don't fucking know what I'm talking about. I'm just trying to do good and learn and do my thing. But from what I read... That's our whole podcast. That's the whole podcast. We're not scholars. We are just online.
Starting point is 00:19:17 So I was looking up this one page called Black, mermaid productions and it's like about like it's like Australian comics and mystical mermaids and there's this one article by um about like mermaids and folklore and in Australian indigenous culture and it says that commonly mermaids are uh found in freshwater instead of like the sea even though Australia is a giant ass island. but it's mostly freshwater mermaids who usually live in like watering holes.
Starting point is 00:20:01 So when I was rereading this tale, it's very much sea mermaids. And so I looked into that and I think a huge part of Australian like folklore is a blending and a kind of like European cultural takeover of the indigenous folklore.
Starting point is 00:20:31 And so I think actually when I was rereading this, this tale, this is a more European take on, I think it was like something like brought over instead of something that came from Australia, if that makes sense, to when I was doing like more research on, But I think names have been switched. And I still think the story is lovely.
Starting point is 00:20:57 But I don't think it's an actual, like, tale from Australia, especially with, um, one of the names in it is Yael, which is like, um, I think a Hebrew or Yiddish, like name. Yep. Like, from like Jewish folklore. So I was like, I don't know. So there's a cultural hodgepodge of something going on here. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:21:21 But it's still really pretty. So I'll still read it. Well, and that's, I mean, and that's just kind of, you know, a lot of folk tales of, like, folklore and folk tales from like heavily colonized areas tend to have a lot of cultural mishmash of everyone that supplied something for the story in one way or another. So it still may very well be from Australia, just not like. Aboriginal Australia. There might be some Aboriginal Australia in it, but a lot of, a lot of people live in Australia now that might have smashed it all together. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. But I wish it had said so on the, on the, the cover, because it just says Australia. And it's like, but where? But where? I know. Australia is a huge. It's just a fucking huge. It's down under, baby. I know. I love when folk tale books like that have like that have like, like, background and history about like where they got the story and how it might have changed and like I just think that's so cool. So. But I also think it's great to do your own research because me and
Starting point is 00:22:32 my brain, not even thinking about it, I was like, oh, this is totally, it's from Australia. So it's Aboriginal. And it's like, no, no, no, no. I don't think so. That's a very good reminder for everybody whenever you're reading stories like that for sure. Exactly. Yeah. How many predictions? Oh, wait, what's the story called again? It's called Yael and M-L-L-M-L-A-R-R-A. That's the first photo. That's beautiful. That is beautiful. Okay. Wait, will you describe it? Wait, will you describe it? the illustrations so our listeners can also make predictions based on yes absolutely I love doing that and we'll post it obviously to like Instagram and stuff it's a pencil drawing of a person who is in the sky
Starting point is 00:23:40 and they have this cloak like thing on their back that looks like it's shaped like wings So that's all, that's it. Make your predictions. I honestly don't know if I'm allowed. Because I remember you told me the story once. Abby can't go. And I sort of half remember it. But I don't remember every detail,
Starting point is 00:24:07 but I think I remember the vague shape of it. So I think I'm not allowed to make predictions. Okay. Abby makes no predictions. Okay. It's up to me then. Oh, I'm so excited. All on you, girl. You've got this.
Starting point is 00:24:20 Gosh, I don't even know if we've ever read like read a Australian tale. I think it's the first time. I know. This is awesome. Great pick, Maddie. Thank you. Do I get three predictions? Yes.
Starting point is 00:24:33 It's a bit long. Okay. Excellent. Excellent. Because my stories are very, very, very short. Great. Okay. First prediction.
Starting point is 00:24:44 So you know how mermaids are either always extremely tragic, extremely girly pop or extremely scary? Yes. I'm going to predict tragic mermaid for this story. Mermaids come in three varieties and those are the three. Three flavors. I got three looks. Okay, sorry.
Starting point is 00:25:11 So Tragic Mermaid. I mean, I saw the wings. Am I allowed to predict that it's a sign? You can predict siren. Okay, I predict siren, because that's like kind of a classic, I mean, I have no idea about classic Australian tales, but. Well, I mean, I don't think this tale did either, so. Okay. And I also predict murder.
Starting point is 00:25:44 Murder. Murder. Murder. Murder. Murder. All aboard. Oh my God. Okay.
Starting point is 00:26:02 Should I start now? That might be the episode title. All aboard. All aboard. Definitely a contender. Oh, about the murder train. God, I love that song. Thank you guys for getting that immediately.
Starting point is 00:26:21 You're super cool people. We're so cool. You're so cool. We didn't watch far too many how I much your mother episodes on repeat. The tale of Yael and Molwara. Once upon a time, there was a bird spirit named Yail, who spent his time roaming the far reaches of the heavens.
Starting point is 00:26:47 He wore a long gold cloak of feathers that flowed out behind his back and up over his head to form a mask around where his eyes would be. However, while Yale's body was human, he had no face. Inside his mask was nothing but endless blue sky. And though he had legs, he had never used them because his golden cloak would take him anywhere he wished to go. That's so fucking cool. Yarnu, Yale's father, was anxious for his son to settle down with one of the many
Starting point is 00:27:18 spirits who lived in the heavens. but Yael would not. Try as Yarnu might to persuade his son. Yale would not marry. Yarnu was sad, for as far as he knew, he was the only bird spirit without grandchildren. Oh, no. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:38 I love that Yail's a free spirit. Yeah, he's like, child free by choice. Exactly. Somebody's like, one. Sorry, I just love to like, as far as I know, I'm the only birds here without grandchildren and that's bullshit.
Starting point is 00:27:54 And that's a fucking problem. One day as Yale floated gently above the earth, he thought of the awful plight of being human. He could think of nothing worse than being a clumsy human tied to the earth
Starting point is 00:28:12 by gravity. As he floated, he noticed a young woman walking along the cliff edge near the ocean. Her long legs carried her softly. How strange, he said to himself, she is quite graceful for a human. He floated along above her
Starting point is 00:28:27 and marveled at her quiet step. For humans were usually awkward, lumbering creatures who had no respect for the earth. I mean, is he wrong? Yeah, I was like, is she kind of? That's a read.
Starting point is 00:28:39 Is she cute? Mm-hmm. Yet this girl walked carefully as though she could not take in enough of the rugged beauty around her. The girl must have sensed Gail's presence because suddenly she looked upward, and at the very same time she tripped over a rock and plunged headlong over the cliff down towards the sharp rocks below. Oh no.
Starting point is 00:29:03 Save her bird man. Save her bird man. Yale quickly swooped down to catch the girl and then flew back up to the heavens with her in his arms. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. You have to repeat that. And Brie just like gently took her paw and put it on Abby's nose like she went to me. That was so funny. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:29:29 She's so cute. I'm going to have to kick her out if she's going to be a fucking distraction. Yayal was very. Please read that last line. Okay. Yail quickly swooped down to catch the girl and then flew back up into the heavens with her in his arms. When she opened her eyes and saw her. her rescuer's empty face, she gasped in fear.
Starting point is 00:29:54 Where am I? She whispered. Who are you? Am I dead? No, Yale laughed. You are still very much alive. I saved you from your fall from the cliff. And I am a bird spirit.
Starting point is 00:30:05 A bird spirit, she said, wondering. Yeah, right? It's like, he lays it out. Here's the situation. Before you ask, no, you're going to say, what are you? I'm a bird spirit. Don't worry about it. I have no face because I'm a bird.
Starting point is 00:30:20 I love the imagery so much. He seems so like, that seems so like mystical and yeah. Not having a face, but it just being like blue sky. That's crazy. I don't know. I love it. Me too. That's kind of what captivated me. And there's like another photo, there's like another, um, picture that shows the, uh, his face better. And it's like, it's really beautiful. Um, a bird spirit, she said wonderingly, though she'd heard of such things. things never before had she seen one. Thank you for saving me. My name is Mulwara, and I am a human. Yes, I know, he replied. I am Yael.
Starting point is 00:31:03 Yael and Milwara flew around in the sky, and Yail showed her how beautiful the earth could be from above. It's wonderful, she sighed, so vibrant and glorious. Wolwara's enthusiasm made Yail want to show her even more of the glory of the heavens. Would you like to see something else, he asked? When Moira nodded, he curved around in the sky, and soon they were soaring far, far away. As they explored the stars and planets, they found a mutual love of nature in the world of beauty and freedom. This is really sweet.
Starting point is 00:31:35 This is romantic as fuck. I'm genuinely into this, and I am almost never genuinely into a fairy tale meat cute. I know. That's why I loved it so much. I was like, oh, they're exploring the stars. I mean, I love Stephen. I love him so much. I am a little sad.
Starting point is 00:31:55 He is not a bird spirit. He is not a bird spirit. He's not a bird spirit. I know. It kind of reminds me of a hundred thousand kingdoms. It does. Like when they, yeah. I know.
Starting point is 00:32:06 I know what scene you know what I'm talking about. After some time, Mulwara asked, Yael, why did you save me? Yael pondered this question for some time. Indeed, there was no simple answer. something about this girl had touched him and now the impulse had turned into something even deeper he decided to take Molara
Starting point is 00:32:28 to meet his father, Yarnu when Yail appeared before Yarnu with Mowah in his arms Yarnu was not pleased doesn't he want grandchildren Not human hybrid Not human babies So he's a fucking bigot He's a bigot
Starting point is 00:32:47 Yeah he is what's that thing you have in your arms he asked that thing whoa that thing that's fucked it's fucked up i am a human mulwara said bravely so you are you poor clumsy thing replied yarnu pityingly but why have you brought this thing of earth here he asked turning to yael Yael hesitated to speak of what was now clearly in his heart. Instead, he replied, she fell from the cliff and I could not let her die. Yarnu looked closely at Yail.
Starting point is 00:33:30 Surely his glorious son had not fallen in love with this pathetic girl. Immediately, he decided that Molwara must be disposed of. Yarnu cringed at the thought of fat, clumsy grandchildren. I am a gog. I am a gape. I am speechless. I hate. Fuck Yarnie. I love I love this story. I love the conflict. This is really, uh, it's interesting. I'm excited to see where he goes. Son, why don't you put the heavy one down and rest? He suggested softly. But Yale refused. He knew his father well enough to know this was a trick. If he let Mulwara go, he knew her weight would immediately send her plummeting back down to earth. You cannot carry her day and night, Yarnu said crossly. Why not share her weight with the others?
Starting point is 00:34:29 Yael would not agree to this either. He knew of his father's influence. One word from him and the other bird spirits would drop her. Ach, then go away, said Yarnu disgustedly, once he realized his tricks would not work. And so, Yale flew off with Mulwara. and showed her other heavenly wonders. Though he was disappointed in his father, he had hoped that he would soon understand.
Starting point is 00:34:54 Much time passed as Yael and Mowara continued to wander the skies. They returned only now and then to see Yarnu. Yarnu waited patiently for his son to tire of the earth girl, but his weight was in vain. Mowara too began to fall in love with Yail. When Yarnu saw how she looked at his son, he was filled with rage.
Starting point is 00:35:17 One day, Mulwara said to Yael, I love your world, Yail. It's very beautiful, but very different from mine. What is wrong? asked Yail, as he looked at her sad face. Oh, Yail, she said. I love you, but I miss the feel of earth beneath my feet. I want to see the flowers and the birds and the trees. I miss my family. And I wish you had a face.
Starting point is 00:35:41 I want to be able to see you frown and be happy or sad. I would like to please you, he sighed, but I would like to please you, he sighed, but I am a bird spirit and not a man. Yarnu chuckled happily. At last, the boy is coming to his senses, he told himself. Soon he will throw that clumsy creature away. While Yael visited his father next, Yarnu welcomed him warmly. Come to your senses, have you?
Starting point is 00:36:03 He asked eagerly, ignoring Mawara. I believe I have, replied Yail. Wonderful, wonderful, said Yarnie happily. Drop her. Yeah, no. Let go. The next sentence. You're so good, Abby. Well, drop her off gently, my boy.
Starting point is 00:36:23 When you return, I will have some beautiful spirits waiting for you. I am afraid you don't understand, father, said Yael. I do not want to let Mowara go. I want to give up my spirit form and become human. I know you have the power to help me to do it. Yarnu was furious. It's so very. very city of angels.
Starting point is 00:36:48 I was just thinking bad. I fucking hated that movie. Yes, we all did. I'm scared of where this is going. Yeah. That movie fucking sucks, but it was awful. So mad. I was so mad at the end of that movie.
Starting point is 00:37:01 Yeah, that movie, the ending was super dumb. This is kind of an interesting trope reversal, though. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. I mean, like, that a heavenly, usually like the heavenly creature is a, is the woman. And the man is trying to keep her somehow. like kind of forcing her to be immortal. Yeah, like remove her seal skin.
Starting point is 00:37:21 Yeah, or keep her robe or something. Yeah. Some garment. But in this one, the heavenly creature is the man and he's going to willingly, he wants to willingly give it up. That is so romantic. Yeah. I know.
Starting point is 00:37:38 I'm just saying. I love Eyal so much. Where's the movie, Hollywood. Right? We could have this. This would be a great, like, animated, like, anime-style movie. I could totally see that. That's actually an insanely good idea.
Starting point is 00:37:57 I feel like we need more original animated films. We do. Yeah. Okay, we're going to Hollywood. Mm-hmm. Yep. He flew around the sky in a snarling rage, sending sparks leaping around him. Then he swooped down.
Starting point is 00:38:14 to try to knock Mulwara from Yael's arms. Finally, he screeched leave both of you and flew off into the furthest of heaven. Yael and Marwara grew sadder and sadder. It seemed there would be no human form for Yail. They no longer roamed the heavens, but sat in silence holding each other gently. Hmm, complained Yarnu when he finally returned.
Starting point is 00:38:38 He might as well be human for all the flying he does now. Now, though Yarno, had many faults he loved his son deeply. Though he was very strong-willed and temperamental of an old spirit, in the end, he wanted only what was best for his son. He called Yael to him. Son, if you give up this human, I will give you anything you wish for he offered. But Yael only shook his head.
Starting point is 00:39:04 Alas, I know when I am beaten, the old spirit said sadly, I will grant your request. But you know that once you leave this heavenly kingdom, you can never return. Yes, father. And you understand that though I may give you a human face and form, I cannot make the human people accept you as you may want. You will never be completely one of them. Yael accepted this. Yarnu spread out his feather cloak and began to glow a deep dark red,
Starting point is 00:39:33 a red that was for the mother earth. The glow spread away from the old spirit and over Yael and Mulwara, completely enveloping them in dark mist. Yael felt himself growing heavier and heavier. Then, suddenly, both he and Molwara were falling down, down, down, through the heavens, past the sun and the planets, and back to Earth. The ground rushed up to meet them, but just before they collided, their fall was halted and they landed gently in the sand. Once they had recovered their breath, Mulwara turned to look eagerly at Yail. Oh, Yail, she cried happily. You look wonderful. You are so handsome.
Starting point is 00:40:12 Now let me show you the delights of my world. Yael smiled happily and hand in hand they stood up. But when Yail tried to walk, he fell over. How do you move in these things? he asked, as he felt his legs. But you have always had legs, she answered laughing. Yes, I've always had them, but I've never felt their weight and I've never walked in my life. It is simple, she said kindly. You simply stand up and put one foot in front of the other.
Starting point is 00:40:40 you will soon get used to it. Yael stood up, took two steps, and fell over once again. They continued in this way along the beach. He did learn eventually, but was never able to walk as naturally as Molara. He was always a bit wobbly and had difficult walking in a straight line. When Mulwara returned to her home, her family was overjoyed to have her back. They hugged and kissed her and asked her where she had been. When she told him her strange tale,
Starting point is 00:41:10 did not believe her, but patted her on the head nicely, thinking she didn't spend too long. How long do we think Mulwara was gone? Like, how long have they been flying around out there? Maybe it's different in the heavenly kingdom. Maybe. So maybe she's only been gone like an afternoon as far as her, because they didn't seem like overly worried about her. They were just like, damn, what took so long? Right. Maybe like a day or two at the moment. At the moment. most. But it seems like months and weeks. Years.
Starting point is 00:41:46 I mean, if you're exploring planets. True. I mean, you make a good point. And who is the stranger? They asked as they looked at Yael. This wobbly stranger. He keeps falling down. What's wrong with him?
Starting point is 00:42:02 What's wrong with him? He can't walk in a fucking straight line. This is Yail. Mawara replied. The bird spirit I was telling you. about, only he is human now, and he has come to live with us. Mulwara's family looked nervously at Yael, but it was obvious that the two were in love, so they held out their hands and welcomed.
Starting point is 00:42:23 And Yael went to take their hands. He tripped, fell over, pulling Mulwara's mother with him. Clemsy human. He's still a bit wobbly, explained Mulwara as she helped them both up. Mulwara's family tried to like A.L. But they were puzzled by his strange behavior. He didn't eat red meat, but only seeds and raw worms. He'd been taking on my eyes.
Starting point is 00:42:51 That's actually so funny. So silly. He's still eating like a bird man. He's a bird. He's a bird spirit. So he's still literally just a bird. He's just a bird. His dad told him.
Starting point is 00:43:02 He's like, I can change your form. But you are still a fucking spirit, my dude. You're a bird. You're still a bird. bird. He'd been taken on several hunts, but always ruined things by falling over. One night they cooked him a special meal of brushed turkey, and he had only cried and cried. Instead of eating it, he'd gone and buried it.
Starting point is 00:43:26 Oh, that's so sad. That's sweet. It did not matter what bird they chose to eat. Yael always wept uncontrollably when he saw the dead body. He's a bird person. You're a bird man. He's a, he's, he's, he's against bird law. It's against bird law.
Starting point is 00:43:47 The elders grew more and more worried at Yale's strange behavior. They held a special meeting to try to understand why Mulwara's friend was so odd. Yale's father recounted the strange to, what, Yao's father? I think this is a typo. Yeah, so I think Mulwara. Mara's father, yeah. It must be.
Starting point is 00:44:09 We've heard from Danielle's father. We've heard from him. Mulwara's father recounted the strange story his daughter had told him upon her return. The old men were angry they hadn't been informed earlier. Spirits could be very bad trouble and they didn't want any. He could be an evil spirit in disguise, said one. Waiting for the right moment to bring us harm, said another. He seems harmless, though, said Morwara's father.
Starting point is 00:44:40 He's just not like the rest of us. Not like the rest of us, they repeated crossly. That proves we're right, said the old men. There's no place for evil. There's no place for evil spirits here. You must get rid of him before he causes any more trouble. Damn. Right?
Starting point is 00:45:01 Jump into conclusions. Mulwara's father took pity on the young lovers and warned them that it was no longer safe for them to stay. He gave them plenty of food and a good sharp spear and sent them off to find a place where they could live happily. For many days they followed the line of the cliff edge. Wherever they went though, people would always notice Yale's wobbly legs. When they spoke to him, they grew frightened of the strange stories he told. How could a man know so much about the heavens they reasoned? unless he was an evil spirit fallen from the sky.
Starting point is 00:45:35 And so the troubles would begin once again. One day, they were sitting on the warm sand, bathing their tired feet in the ocean. Yael said, I was stupid to think I could be human. Your people will never accept me no matter where we go. Mulwara sighed, and yours will not accept me either, she said. Now, Yarnu had been watching his son's life grow more and more difficult. He had been reluctantly impressed by Mulwara's devotion to his son and the fact that never once did she criticize him.
Starting point is 00:46:07 Though he knew that he could never return, there was one thing he could do, and he hoped it would work because there was their last chance at happiness. Yarnu began to glow, but this time he glowed blue, not red. Yael and Mulwara sensed his presence and looked up to see the luminous blue glow in the sky. It's your father, said Mulwara. I wonder what he's up to, replied Yail, puzzled. The vibrant blue glow floated out of Yarnu down to the young couple below. They were bathed in the calm, gentle light, and slowly began to feel a languid flowing freedom wash over them. The ocean waves slowly overtook them. They watched in surprise as their toes disappeared, then their feet, then their legs.
Starting point is 00:46:56 soon they were both part of the sea and yet still their individual selves. This is wonderful, gurgled Mulwara as she surged through waves. I love it, cried Kael. I feel light again. And over and over they rolled, frolicing and giggling like young seals. Thank you, Father, they both called as he followed them out to sea. Be happy, my two sea spirits, he returned. I will visit you again when my first grandchild is born. Then,
Starting point is 00:47:27 Yarnu has a vision. He has an agenda. He's like, well, I'm not getting grandchildren this way. Then Yarnu flew off, muttering to himself. At least now my grandchildren will not be so clumsy. He smiled. He smiled contentedly. But you couldn't see, of course, because his face went on forever,
Starting point is 00:47:51 just like the endless blue sea. And that's the end. Wow. That's so beautiful. That was beautiful. I know. I almost started crying at the end. Oh, that made me tear up a little bit.
Starting point is 00:48:04 That was so sweet. I think that was the most romantic story we've ever had on the podcast. You're welcome. Thank you. Yes, thank you for telling us that amazing story. That was beautiful. Wow. Wasn't that beautiful?
Starting point is 00:48:20 Really beautiful. And so, like, I don't know, it was so cool. just the imagery and it felt really magical. Like that felt like what I imagine like a fairy tale has, you know? Yeah. That was so satisfying on every level. Yeah. And it's a nice, it's like, it doesn't have that trope with like they meet and then they fall in
Starting point is 00:48:43 love immediately. It's like, no, they traverse and travel and talk and move and feel and understand. They've been a lot of time together. Yeah. Yeah. And they don't criticize each other. or like they just try to help each other and they tried the best they can to make their life, but they can't.
Starting point is 00:49:00 And it's just tragic. Well, yeah, it's like a mermaid creation story. Yeah, that's so cool. Happy mermaid. Happy mermaid. I forgot because like I remember because you, you never told me the full story, but you told me like the shape of it once. And I totally forgot where the mermaid part actually.
Starting point is 00:49:24 came in. I thought it was way earlier. So I was like, I was like, when he's a bird person? I thought he was a fish guy. That's the opposite of mermaid. Yeah. Get it together, Maddie. I love this. I had you guys in the first half. Origin story. You had us in the first half. I was kind of getting that feel that like maybe that's and where they would end up. Yeah. Like a bird made of a fish signor, but where would they live? I was thinking of that quote the entire time. for a second I thought he was going to turn him like say he was going to turn him human and accidentally turn him to the sea instead and they would be like tragically separated in a different way like but yeah that was so blub blub blub that took me that took me out of it because like like gurgled this is great this is part club glob glove club club club club up. Do you have any fix for that?
Starting point is 00:50:32 No. I can't think of one either. That was so perfect. Yeah, that was really beautiful. Maybe I do really love that Yail's father got to see them in their new form and got to, you know, see them be happy together. Maybe my only ad would be that Milwara's father got to see them be happy together. Yeah. I like that.
Starting point is 00:50:58 He was so supportive. He was. He was like, can I get out of here, kids? Mm-hmm. Yeah. Like, I love you, but these people are being jerks. Mm-hmm. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:51:12 And I love that it's, you know, it's like there's this, I think for the humans in this tale, it was the uncanny valley of him. They were like, there's something so strange about. touch you. And it's so, I don't know, I just, yeah, because I love that, like, he doesn't lose his bird spirit qualities, that, like, which means that he's fucking scary to your average person. Like, it's like when you, it's like if you met an, uh, an alien who had made a human suit, you know, like, he's like, he's like a body snatcher. He's, he's, he just seems, horrifying and just wrong.
Starting point is 00:51:58 Yeah. The crying over the birds being like as food just made me laugh so long. That's so funny. I love that he's like still eating seeds and worms. Like he's still like a bird. That's so. And that's what they said. But it was very funny.
Starting point is 00:52:17 But yeah, I feel like in a lot of like transitions from mystical Eldridge being to humans. There is no in between. But I really liked how Yael is like still you know his father was right. He was like, he will never be human
Starting point is 00:52:38 and they're going to know. And I can't do anything about that. I love that he came around in the end and helped them both. That's so sweet. He wants those grandkids. He wants those grandkids. He won't be clumsy. He's still kind of a bigot at the end.
Starting point is 00:52:59 Yeah. He's like, he's really happy with himself because he's like, you know what? It worked out. You know what? I did good. That clumsy human grandchildren for me. I know. He's like, I'll be back when you have some fucking kids.
Starting point is 00:53:15 Yeah, give me some grandkids. You owe me. You owe me big. You owe me big. Yeah. Oh, and I love how like, yeah, our central couple are so, supportive of each other. They don't, like, judge each other for their limitations or blame them for making their lives harder.
Starting point is 00:53:36 Well, their love, they understand their love and if that's all that matters to them. Other people don't understand it, but they do, and that's so sweet, but they understand it. Genuinely beautiful story. Love is love. Love wins. Love is fucking love. It doesn't have to make sense to everybody else. I know. Where's that fun picture? It's a really pretty one. Yeah, okay, I'm going to show it to you guys.
Starting point is 00:54:03 Yeah, you'll have to take pictures and send it to me so I can post it on our Instagram. Oh. Of him flying her around. Yeah. Is that center for you? Yeah, I can see it. Okay. Nice.
Starting point is 00:54:17 He kind of has a face. Yeah. But it's the sky. Yeah. Yeah. Um, for, I know we have at least a few Australian listeners. Um, if, if any of y'all have heard that story before or maybe know more about it or have never, ever heard of the story and are deeply unsure why it was attributed to Australia.
Starting point is 00:54:41 Uh-huh. Feel free, feel free to reach out to us and let us know if you've ever heard of this one or have more information about it. Yeah, please do. But it was beautiful. Because I tried. Yeah. you you tried you did your best and that's all we can do very sadly i got zero points in that last
Starting point is 00:55:01 oh yeah you got zero you got wrong you know it's actually not bad because it was such a great story it's not it's not really that sad just sad for me that i didn't get any points i feel like he was thinking about murdering her though oh no he tried to remember he tried to knock her out of his hands he was like, zoom, like a bird. I should have predicted murder attempt. Yeah. Attempted murder. Attempted murder.
Starting point is 00:55:29 Okay. So I have two stories, very short stories to tell you today. The first is, hold on, I want to tell you what book I got it from first. They're both Scottish stories. And I found this via Graham John Codagh. Scotland's stories, historic tales for incredible places. He actually has like a blog, so that's where I found them. But I'm definitely putting this book on my to buy list because it looks awesome.
Starting point is 00:56:03 So everybody go check that out. The link will be in our show notes. Or if you want to link directly, just message us on Instagram or email us and I will send it over. The first story is called The Weeping Mermaid of Locke Ascent. And I'm going to let you make two predictions. The Weeping Mermaid. Well, isn't that a great title? That's a great title.
Starting point is 00:56:29 I'm going to let our guest go first. Okay, so the Weeping Mermaid of Locke, you said? So a Scottish fairy tale. That was a bad accent. I'm sorry. That was pretty wretched. That's a hard one. Okay, the weeping mermaid. You know, I have such great predictions when I'm listening to you guys.
Starting point is 00:56:55 And now that I'm on the show, I'm trying to think of a good prediction. It's because it's really hard when you're put on the spot. It's really hard on the spot. Okay, okay. I predict that the weeping mermaid is crying because she lost something. Okay. That's okay. Prediction number one.
Starting point is 00:57:19 Excellent. Oh, sorry. I'm sorry. Go rush. I had my foot on her tail. And prediction number two, I think that there's going to be a fuck-ass man involved. Fug-ass man.
Starting point is 00:57:35 Shit. Yeah. That's an excellent prediction. That's a classic mermaid prediction. It's fantastic. I got to predict that more option. There's going to be a fuck-ass man involved. Um
Starting point is 00:57:47 Yeah, based on our stories, that is a very, very likely Yeah, it's kind of like on par with horse murder. Yeah. Yeah. High, high instances of occurrence. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Okay.
Starting point is 00:58:04 Because we know there are only three types of mermaid. Yeah. Tragic. For now. Holy Pop. The rare, truly romantic kind. That's true. Very true.
Starting point is 00:58:17 That's true. I feel like that's the exception that proves the rule. Because it was almost tragic. It was Deus X. Deus X. Sky Daddy saved it from being a tragic story. He did. He did. Sky Daddy.
Starting point is 00:58:37 And what was the third kind? It was tragic, girly pop and scary, like terrifying. And scary. I know weeping would. suggest this is a tragic mermaid story, but I want to say this is a scary mermaid. Scary mermaid. You know how much I love a scary mermaid. I know you love a scary mermaid. I am never going to see a mermaid. I'm never going to see a mermaid. I watched Kevin in the woods last night. Veronica had never seen it. It was so exciting. Seriously? Isn't that crazy? I know. How is that
Starting point is 00:59:13 possible? It was so good. It's probably my favorite movie of all times. It's a fine choice if so. It's in my top 10 for sure. Yeah. Top 15. The mess on them are, or the cleanup on them are a nightmare. I love that movie so much. Me too.
Starting point is 00:59:33 So fucking good. It's pretty perfect. Mm-hmm. Oh, man. Oh, man. Just the mermaid content alone. And that's like three throwaway jokes makes it amazing. I should watch that for mermaid.
Starting point is 00:59:51 You know, when I'm getting tattooed tomorrow, I'll throw that on. Throw that on. It's so awesome. Thank you, Kelsey. That's an incredible idea. Okay. And my second prediction, treasure. Treasurer.
Starting point is 01:00:15 Okay, I love it. This is the Weeping Mermaid of Locke Assent. And apologies to all Scottish people who I, might offend by totally butchering the pronunciation of these. Oh, and we're going to do a quick, before I start, I also do want to quick geography corner. Yes, tell us geography corner. This is lock assent is a real lock and it is at the very, like not at the tip top of Scotland, but very close to the top, very northern. And it looks pretty big from what I can see. Okay. It was a pretty big lock.
Starting point is 01:00:58 And also, I don't know if anybody else knows what the difference between the lock and the lake is. But there is no difference. It's just the Gaelic word for the lake. I did know that. I thought that you'd have covered something special. There is no difference. Sometimes it could be a sea inlet so it can connect to the sea. lakes typically don't do that, but it's basically just a lake. Anyway, also, I feel like
Starting point is 01:01:34 maybe Scottish people might yell at me for saying that. So let me know if I'm wrong. It's just a lake. Just lake. You're not special. You're not special. You're not special. All right. The Weeping Mermaid of Locke Essent. The ruins of Ardric Castle stand like a sentinel keeping watch over the icy black waters of Loch Ascent. You might hear the soft sound of sobbing as you wander around the edges of Loch Ascent and explore the ruins of the old castle. It might just be a trick of the wind,
Starting point is 01:02:12 but then again, you might be hearing the legendary mermaid of Locke Assent. The story goes that when the chief of the McLiads of Ascent, of Ascent was building was building Ardbrick Castle. He ran into a bit of financial trouble before the work had even started. MacLeod was desperate, sorry, I'm having trouble today.
Starting point is 01:02:34 Desperate. Desperate. No, we're keeping it. There's so many, so many hard to pronounce words that I wasn't sure about in between all the ones they do know how to pronounce.
Starting point is 01:02:44 Sort of. Maclead was desperate to have a home benefiting, a home befitting his station. I'm sorry, hold on. Take a sip of your water. My brain to my tongue isn't working anymore. It's hard.
Starting point is 01:03:05 It's harder than you guys, you guys make it sound easy. Thank you. I'm terrible. I'm terrible at reading out loud, and I love that we decided to do a podcast. That's the majority of that. Most of that.
Starting point is 01:03:18 I just tried to emulate. late Cynthia Lamel. Yeah. Yep. Yeah. Just channel. Channel Cynthia. Channel Lamel.
Starting point is 01:03:29 Channel Lamel. That could be a good podcast. Okay, no. Sorry. Okay. Good title. McLeod was desperate to have a home befitting his station, but he faced the prospect of not only having no castle, but having no home at all.
Starting point is 01:03:49 That was when a dark stranger approached him and offered him to help build the castle, financing the whole thing himself. MacLeod couldn't believe his luck, but he was real fool. That's good. That's always a good sign. There would be a catch. All he would need in return was the promise of MacLeod's soul. Oh, that's it.
Starting point is 01:04:13 Just your soul. Cheap at the price. Just take it. You didn't do anything with that. That was when the clan chief realized he was dealing with the devil. and suddenly the arrangement didn't sound quite as appealing. This is awesome. It's also a devil's story.
Starting point is 01:04:29 I know. A devil and mermaid story? Are you kidding me? Put your hands together. Put your hands together. He did his best to negotiate a different payment, but the devil wasn't budging. This all changed when McLeod's daughter, Amir, walked in.
Starting point is 01:04:48 The devil changed his price from MacLeod's soul to his daughter's hand, In marriage. It was a difficult decision, but MacLeod wanted this castle so badly. So he wasn't willing. To his eternal shame, he accepted. Ardrich Castle was built in a matter of days, and now the devil was ready to claim his side of the bargain. Oh, no. Give away your soul, but your daughter, that's a different story.
Starting point is 01:05:21 What else are daughters for? They're basically money. Fuck-ass man. There's a fuck-ass man here. What I told you? You can always bet there's going to be a fuck-ass man. Amir had no idea of the real identity of the groom, but was given no choice in the matter and dutifully went along with the arrangement.
Starting point is 01:05:43 The night before the wedding, Macklead's conscience got the better of him, and he broke the news to Amir. Sorry, you're marrying the devil. He admitted... name though. I know it's great. I hope I'm pronouncing it correctly, Amir. It's very pretty.
Starting point is 01:05:59 He admitted who her betrothed truly was and saw the tears in his daughter's eyes. She was distraught, but there was no way of escaping before the ceremony the next day. Rather than face marrying the devil, Amir threw herself from the top of the tower of Arbric Castle and plunged into the lock assent below. How about you push your dad off the battle? Yes. there's the fix. I feel... Absolutely the fix.
Starting point is 01:06:27 Nobody believed that she could have survived the fall, and the devil was furious that he had been denied his prize. In his rage, he caused huge rocks to fall from the sky and attempt to destroy Mackleod's land, leaving the boulders strown across the landscape to be seen today. Cool. Everybody assumed that Amir had died, but her body was never found.
Starting point is 01:06:48 Soon, people started to notice a weeping sound near the lock and occasionally the flick of a large tail disappearing under the water. Amir had transformed into a mermaid and kept herself hidden from the devil and caves deep below the surface. The water level isn't constant at Locke Ascent, and it's believed that when the lock begins to rise, it's due to the tears from the mermaid of Ascent, weeping for the life that she was never able to live. Because she lost something. She lost. Because she lost.
Starting point is 01:07:19 The life that she could never live. I wanted to leave. Totally. Two for two, Maddie. Two. Excellent. Excellent predictions. And you can actually see this castle.
Starting point is 01:07:32 Like there are still ruins of it. Oh, I want to look. Yeah. That's so cool. That's fascinating. Oh. I know. Isn't that good?
Starting point is 01:07:42 I love that like her tears are what fill up and like cause the rise and the fall of the lock. Mm-hmm. All right. Yeah. Abby or Maddie you got two points and Abby zero for two zero for two yeah I had like a weird theory that the weeping was actually a lure to draw in the fuck ass man uh women that would be drowns them or something that's a great story so maybe it's an addendum maybe oh you know what maybe this mermaid is just kind of like you know what I hate men now all of them every single one
Starting point is 01:08:22 And then she uses her weeping to fill up the lake so that she can lure them to the shores and then drown them. Fuck yeah. See, you wanted a good for her story. I wanted a good for her story. Yeah. And it's just sad. So it's just solidly in the tragic mermaid bucket.
Starting point is 01:08:40 She's a tragic mermaid. Very sad. Great story, though. I love the lore. I love when it's like a real place that you can visit and see. Uh-huh. It's super cool. Wow, and it's just, ugh.
Starting point is 01:08:55 And it was so sad. Girl. All right. Stupid father. Stupid father. Mm-hmm. Yeah. I love the fix that she pushes him off.
Starting point is 01:09:06 And he becomes the merm man. And then he becomes the weeping merman. Oh, my daughter. That's an excellent choice. But then again, would she have to still marry the devil? Yeah. I still think of that probably means. that the devil would still be like, but you're still a fair game.
Starting point is 01:09:26 I'm looking at the ruins right now. And it wasn't it cool? It's so cool. And it looks like she would have had to jump very far to land in the water. It's Locke, Ascent. Yeah, it's, um, as Y and T. Ascent. An Ardvick castle.
Starting point is 01:09:51 I think there's more than one castle near it, too. Okay, maybe I'm. Which is it just like gave me pleasure to think of her as like an Olympic level jumper. Yeah, totally. Well, and the lock constantly like goes up and down. Oh, that's right. It does get like closer to the water. Like you just said.
Starting point is 01:10:12 Yeah. I have very bad like lists or comprehension. So thank you. It's all good. All right. The next story I'm going to tell you about it's from the same book. Same author, Stories of Scotland. And this one is
Starting point is 01:10:29 The Scottish Mermaid of Galloway. And it's very, very short. You only get one prediction. Girlie pop mermaid. Yeah. I believe that the mermaid steals something. Nice. That's very girly pop up them.
Starting point is 01:10:59 Exactly. Love that for her. Okay. I have way too many tabs open. Sorry, what's like? All the ginger was at the bottom of that one. I love that one. It's like all spicy and...
Starting point is 01:11:25 My tongue is tingling. Ginger is sound. That was a precious sound. I'm adorable. All right. The Scottish Mermaid of Galloway. The shoreline around Dumfries and Galloway is an incredible place, a haven for pilgrims and smugglers alike. The hidden coves and sheltered beaches are also well known for their
Starting point is 01:11:47 Scottish Mermaid Stories. A young Laird from Cow Hill entered one day, I'm sorry, a young Laird from Cow Hill entered one the day before he was due to marry. He was trying to prepare for the wedding, but he kept being distracted by an enchanting song. The Laird searched for Miles to find the source of the singing, every step getting closer to the sea. Eventually, he stumbled upon the most beautiful woman he had ever seen sitting on the rocky
Starting point is 01:12:17 shore. However, she wasn't a woman at all. To his surprise, the Laird realized she was one of the legendary Scottish mermaids his mother had told him tales of. He'd been warned to keep well away from them, and under no circumstances should they be touched. But with a sweet song in his ear, he just couldn't resist. Under the mermaid's spell, he'd forgotten all about his bride to be now. Yeah, absolutely. She tied. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. She tied her magical hair around his head and sang softly,
Starting point is 01:12:51 and saying him softly to sleep. She tied her hair around his head. Like his whole head, like a balaclava. She's got a really long hair too. And softly sang him to sleep. Once he was deeply snoring, the mermaid picked him up and carried him beneath the waves. That night, the Laird's intended wife had cried herself to sleep. The love of her life had disappeared the day before their wedding and still hadn't returned.
Starting point is 01:13:22 She was startled awake during the night to find him standing over her, but something wasn't right. Uh-uh. He had a sad look on his face and with his hair was dripping wet. She reached out to find his hand and face were freezing to the touch. With tears in his eyes, the young Laird's apparition told his love to forget about him and find another. He was lost forever to the mermaid of Galloway. Oh, shit. Hell, yes.
Starting point is 01:13:50 Oh, I got goosebumps. Isn't that spooky? That one's creepy. I know. It's so creepy. Like, it's just his ghost, like, saying goodbye. Just say, you forget about me. You have to move on.
Starting point is 01:14:02 I'm lost. I'm lost. That mermaid fucking drowned me. Mm-hmm. And might I say she stole him? She still, I absolutely stole him. She sure did. Damn.
Starting point is 01:14:14 killing it. Now, this seems like a crossover between a girly pop mermaid. And I think this is a scary mermaid. I think she's just a scary mermaid. I mean, I feel like that is pretty girly pop. It's pretty girly pop of her to just wrap a man in her hair and take him down to the layer. It's just the imagine of like her, like her wet hair wrapping around him and then like using it to
Starting point is 01:14:43 drag him under. frightening. Isn't that creepy? Oh, no. So very that he lets her. He's like, yes. Yes. See me. See me to sleep. I thought that was so good. I was so creepy. I love a scary mermaid. That was definitely my favorite one. I, yeah, that's delightful. Yeah. Very nice, Kalsam. Thank you. Yeah, I definitely don't have a fix for that one. I loved it. That is a perfect ghost story. Maybe I wish I, like, like, were a little bit longer. I'd love to see a flight. fleshed out a little more. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:15:17 I'd love like, I just, I would love like kind of, I suppose like a more disappearances that like, people have been going missing in the area. More lore behind it. I want more lore. Or lore.
Starting point is 01:15:33 Tell me more. I don't know. I guess guys I'm just such a grade A monster fucker that I also am like, maybe, maybe she was like, That's my man now. Yeah. And it was like a cross between like a, like, what, like a, what's the splash and Kelpie?
Starting point is 01:15:55 And it was she was like, mine. And now. So maybe she like breathed life into him down under the water and he's just her husband now. But he's like really sad about it. Yeah. He's like, he's really miserable. He feels a little bad. Ooh, maybe like if he can cut off all her hair or something, he can return to the surface.
Starting point is 01:16:23 Poor, poor man. So creepy. I love the image of him like him standing over his bride to be just dripping wet. That's so scary. Very spooky. Happy mermaid. Happy mermaid. Oh, my goodness.
Starting point is 01:16:40 What a month it's been. We got some absolute bangers this month. Hell yes. And I still want to do a mermaid bonus episode. It might come out a little late. It might come out in June. A little gift. June Mermei.

I don't think that one needs a fix.
Starting point is 01:18:47 That was just so lovely. I think you had a great little fix. Oh, that Marwara's dad got to see them be happy together. Yeah, like splats. splashing somewhere in the surf. Exactly. It's like, I don't know, I'm imagining, this is the opposite, but I'm imagining when King Triton is like looking up out of the water to see his daughter like on the boat.
Starting point is 01:19:11 And he's like, okay. Okay. I'm happy for you. Like the opposite, because they're the ones that are in the water. Anyway. And so the weeping mermaid actually ended up being the weeping mermaid. because Amir pushed her fuck-ass dad into the water. And you know what?
Starting point is 01:19:35 Maybe she did marry the devil. And maybe it turned out he really wasn't that bad. And they got to like cool shit together. Absolutely. And so it became the Weeping Mir Man of Lock Acid. Fucking delightful. Perfection. And they all lived.
Starting point is 01:19:55 Or did you want to fix your other story too? Oh, nah. That one was so good. I love it so much just as this. And so they all lived happily ever after. The end.
