So how many squares? I have officially crocheted 40 squares for my Halloween cardigan.
I have five left and I'm going insane. I've crocheted my brains out.
You have and they've been like, it's really, it's been fun to watch because they have steadily improved in skill and quality like as you've been going through this. Like do you feel like you're getting better?
Yeah, definitely.
Now I have the circle to square,
granny square crochet pattern memorized
and I can just make one.
I don't have to look it up anymore.
That's amazing.
Look at you.
I know.
And just a regular granny square I can do by myself too.
I have done so many.
I've crocheted 40.
I've got five left.
And then I have to crochet the sleeves
and put it all together,
which is still going to take a little while.
But I am very excited for it to be.
finished.
Woo.
Bambo bam bam.
Wait, so what are the five left that you're going to do?
I don't know yet.
I think I want to do, I think his name is Enoch, that big pumpkin thing from over the garden wall.
I just got that idea today.
I was like, oh, I could just do a circle and then crochet like a little string of white for his teeth and then put like little ribbons coming out.
Like make the little.
But I don't know.
I would have to also go get some green ribbon.
So we'll see if I even want to do that.
But I think I might do that.
And then I want to do just some like patterns.
I haven't done a lot of just like colors and stuff that you can kind of place throughout the final sweater.
To kind of break it up a little bit.
Yeah.
And I have two.
Actually, I do have two stars.
So I might crochet six more because I kind of want every square to be almost every square to be different.
Since I've committed.
So hard.
You've made 40 of these things.
That's crazy.
Yeah.
I've been crocheting like every day.
It's very fun,
but I'm also excited to have it be done and like wear it.
I'm excited to see the finished product.
Yeah, me too.
Yeah.
Me too.
Do you think you're going to be finished in time for October to start?
Definitely.
I definitely will be finished by October.
It better be.
Better be finished.
Yeah. So that's, that is what I've also,
crew ended up crocheting so many. So I got sick as you know.
As I know.
I mean, I had been meaning to be recording this episode for a while,
but I got sick for two weeks and then Abby got sick for a week.
Yeah, I think it's been like three weeks since our last recording.
And we were feeling so virtuous because we like knocked out like all of September.
Yeah.
In one go. Well, all of August.
well we only have released one episode you know what it's been hard it's been difficult to get back
on track it has just keep happening sometimes sometimes life just wants to kick you over and over
and over absolutely absolutely uh it's been a the start to our favorite season of the year so it just
feels like a double, a double whammy of just like, damn, life's not fair.
Yeah.
Sometimes it really, really isn't.
Mm-hmm.
But I did use that sick time to crochet a lot.
And I also watched a bunch of movies that I had never seen before.
And I was excited to tell you because I feel like you've probably seen these.
I ended up, I just, I went through a little phase or I was like, I'm going to watch a bunch of early 2000s movies that I was like, too got for.
I was like, oh, I'm not going to watch the.
Oh, I remember you asked me for a couple of my favorites and I totally forgot to respond.
So I am so excited to see what you came up with on your own.
Yeah.
So I finally watched Tuck Everlasting.
I love that movie.
It was amazing.
It was so good.
I was so excited.
I don't know.
I was just in the mood for like a cozy, comforting kind of cute early 2000s movie in that
scratch the edge. It was so good.
I also watched Bridge to Turibithia.
Oh, I've never seen that one.
I cried like a fucking baby.
It was good, but I cried so much.
And I was like, how could you not?
Like, you'd have to be a monster to not cry.
I've heard that about that movie.
And then I've read a synopsis of it.
So, like, I'm familiar with what happens.
And it's like, yeah, you'd have to be a psychopath.
Yeah.
I mean, to not cry.
Not really. Not really. Not crying doesn't mean you're a psychopath. But I did a lot. I cried so hard. I was like, wow, that really got me. And then I watched a cute one. What is it, John Tucker Must Die.
Never saw that one either. You know what? Maybe I need to do this and watch classic 2000s movies.
I definitely suggest John Tucker. Was it John Tucker? Yeah, John Tucker must die. Yeah, John Tucker must die. It was cute. And it
kind of didn't have, I don't think it had a very like,
um,
predictable ending in my opinion.
The ending was kind of nothing,
but it didn't end in the way that those movies usually end.
So I liked that about it.
And it was very like,
girlhood and that fake dating trope.
Wait, what's the premise of that one?
That's, uh,
John Tucker's like a popular kid and he's dating all these girls at once.
And then they find out and then,
and they find out and they find out and they play.
plot revenge by having their friend fake date him.
Oh my gosh.
And, um, what's his bucket?
The guy who plays Joe in the show Joe.
Oh, um.
You.
I'm going to show you, uh.
Yeah.
And then it was also on Gossip Girl.
God, why am I spacing it out on his name?
I love him.
He's in it and he plays like Penn Badgley.
Penn Badgely is in it.
He's so cute.
He plays like a dweeby kind of like stoner.
kid. A dwee be stoner kid. I know. It's so not like him. That is not the, no. But I love that for him. It was so cute. And I actually love John Tucker, too, like the character that plays the, like player. He was actually very likable to. Oh, man. Who's that actor? I have no idea. I think it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. I just.
Hmm? No, not Alia. Jesse Metcalfe. Ashanti. Ashanti.
Yes. It was very cute. I liked that movie. I had a great time. I crocheted so many. Actually, that was when I was trying to crochet. I crocheted like a spiral one and I kept I kept fucking it up. So I actually made like three of them and they just weren't coming out as like a square and I was going crazy.
Because you were so distracted by this great movie.
No, it's because these patterns don't make sense.
I will follow them and they don't make sense.
And then you like, they'll, I don't know.
I can't explain it.
The patterns just don't make sense.
And sometimes they don't match the like YouTube.
I'll have to go and find the YouTube tutorial and it doesn't match.
And it's like, they lied to you.
Yeah.
They must die.
I'm never doing this again.
I mean, I will keep crocheting, but I'm going to do like basic bitch patterns.
Something else.
Yeah.
I am not doing a different square for every square.
No, this is very ambitious.
And I'm very proud of you for being so close to being done.
It's helping, I feel like it's helping me through a hard time.
Helping me through a hard time.
Keeping me focused on something that's, you know, low risk.
I can always like start over or go get more yarn or.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
So what other movies did you watch?
I think those were the big three.
I also ended up watching Weird, the Weird Al Yankovic story.
Oh my God.
What did you think?
I thought that was a great movie.
I loved it.
I just love Daniel Radcliffe so much.
Yeah.
He's such a gem.
And it was just cute.
The movie was hilarious.
It was weird.
It was weird.
I really, I thought that movie was so funny.
And I love I love that they took the direction of just kind of like actually all of the songs really are owls.
Everyone else just copied him.
His original.
Adam was listening to beat it.
And I was like, oh, I love this cover.
I love this cover.
So funny.
And then the ending was genuinely surprising.
I really wasn't expecting it to take that to go in that direction.
I didn't either.
I was like, is this how it is.
how it ends. Oh, my God.
He's such a goofy dude. I love him.
Well, then I think your sick time was well spent.
Yes. Oh, my God. But it was like two full weeks. It was bad. I have never been sick
like that before. It was like body aches and just not coming out of my nose nonstop.
And what did you do with your sick time?
slept.
It wasn't like, I wasn't, I don't feel like, it's super weird because I'm not sure that it was
actually a sick sickness, even that like my throat was sore, I guess, was the only like real
symptom I had out of just being, outside of just being exhausted.
Like, I just could not stay awake.
Yeah.
Like, I just felt tired and weak and my throat hurt and my head hurt.
I have a headache too.
Yeah. I was really tired, too. I realized it. I realized I might be getting sick. We went to the gym. It was like a Monday night and I was like the day after my birthday. And I was just like, I was exhausted. I was so tired. And I just couldn't. It didn't make any sense. Then I was like, I must just be getting like coming down with something. And then I did. And lo and behold.
I don't know if it's like COVID.
You were.
Maybe.
I don't have a test.
I didn't test and I just stayed home.
Yep.
I mean, same.
I,
like,
it's definitely possible because I haven't been tired like that since the time that I had,
that I know I had COVID for sure.
Right.
So yeah,
just stayed home,
stay home,
stay away from people.
No.
Don't go outside.
But it didn't like,
it wasn't like feverish and it wasn't coughing.
my throat just hurt and I could not.
That's why like I kept thinking like,
oh, I can totally record today.
I can rally.
Like I can I can make this happen.
And then by the time like we got close, I was like, I can't.
I can't.
I'm too tired.
Too tired.
Can't care about anything.
I'm going back to sleep.
That's fair.
I'm glad you slept.
I'm glad you did that.
You're going to take care of yourself.
I was a little bummed out though because I was starting to feel a little bit better by Thursday,
which is like when this game that I've been really wanting to play finally came out.
And it's called Blood of the Dawn Walker.
It's a pretty grim vampire game, but it is very fun to play.
And it was supposed to come out this Wednesday or this Thursday.
or at some point.
And so like I actually took a sick day off of work so that I could play the game all day.
Hell yeah.
And I wasn't napping.
And then I found out that because the game was developed by the freaking Polish people or someone definitely.
It was being released on Warsaw time.
So I thought that it was going to release that morning.
And it turns out that it wasn't going to get released until 6 p.m.
Aw, wamp-wamp.
Super annoying because it was being released at midnight on September 3rd in Warsaw.
That sucks.
The graphics look really good.
Oh, yeah, it's a beautiful game.
I might check this out.
Do they have it on PC?
Yep.
Yes, they do.
I might check it out.
Oh, my gosh.
Yes, please do.
It's really, it's so fun so far.
He's fighting a bear.
Yeah.
You fight bears and people.
and other vampires
and that you also get to choose between like
you're a vampire at night
and still and still a human man by day
but if but one of the one of the skill trees
you can have is witchcraft so you can be like a badass witch
witch during the day and a crazy vampire at night
fun it's really fun and then there's an interesting game mechanic
like involving time because they're trying to like get you to
they're trying to put,
increase the tension.
Because like usually with open world games,
you know,
you run around and you do,
you do everything in the area.
And then by the time you actually get to the main quest line,
like,
there's no urgency to it.
Like,
yeah.
Like really overpowered by the time you get there.
But this game,
you've only got 30 in game days to complete your,
to complete your,
like you're trying to rescue your family from the master vampire.
Yeah.
You've only have 30 in game days to do it.
and every quest you turn in advances time.
So you can't do everything.
You can only do the things that seem to you will materially help you towards your goal.
That's interesting.
I don't know if I like that because I am a side quester.
I also love a side quest.
And I've been finding myself accidentally doing them by reflex.
Like I've been like, people will be like, can you help me find my lost daughter?
And I'm like, sure.
And then I like go and I help find the lost daughter.
and then I go to turn in the quest and then it's like, oh, I'm going to lose three hours.
Yeah.
Because I did this.
And it's, and you still get, like, you should, you still have to do some side quests.
Yeah.
Because like, you need the loot or the XP and or like, you're building relationships that
will help you defeat the master vampire.
But like, you have to be very carefully choosy.
It keeps you focused.
It forces you, you can't go do every side quest before you do the main thing.
You have to pick which ones matter to you.
I understand why they would do that.
I think it's interesting.
I haven't seen that done before,
so I decided to give it a chance.
Yeah.
I'm enjoying it,
but there is a mod that you can get
where you can turn that off
if you don't like that.
Yeah.
Yeah, I'm a full-on side-questor.
If I can do the side-quest instead of the main storyline,
I almost always do.
Yep.
And there are good side quests in this game, too.
I feel like there's always game.
I'm excited to play, but they're never, they're always like, oh, we're going to come out in a year.
Mm-hmm.
So when you heard about it.
Yep.
Yep.
It's like, I think like fable is a good example.
There's like other.
Fable.
There's others.
Helo.
It's that little fairy tale mouse.
Like you're a mouse.
Oh, yeah.
That's still not out.
Still not out.
And I really want to play it.
There's also one that's like, you can be a, you're a princess.
and you can like, I don't know, make political decisions for your kingdom and I don't know, it sounds really fun and I really want to play it.
I heard about that one too.
But it's not going to be out until next year.
Nope.
There's a lot of stuff that we're just sitting and twiddling our thumbs over.
Mm-hmm.
I got really into Rika, the Baba Yaga game.
It's so fun, but it's also just so short.
And for the money, it's worth it.
But I'm sad that it's so short.
I want more game content.
Are they going to drop any?
I think so.
I think they've slowly been adding some stuff.
Okay.
But it's like, it's like you only get a quarter of a game at a time.
Whatever, it's fine.
It's hard having such niche interests.
That's all.
The world really just does not.
cater to
that reminds me when does
yoga come out
the show?
Yeah
because we need to
have it on our radar
watch that one
comes out in October
Oh good, okay
so we have some time
so we can watch it and then report back
Hell yeah
I only watch that first trailer
but I'm hopeful
I'm just excited they're doing
anything Baba Yaga themed
as a TV show
Like maybe that'll inspire someone else to give it the, you know, give her a little more attention because she deserves it.
She deserves it.
Yeah.
I'm, I'm, because like when we first were looking for like what sort of like Baba, Babiaga related media we could look into.
There's, there is not a lot.
So it's cool that this one's getting like some mainstream.
Yes.
Mainstream attention.
It's very exciting.
Speaking of
Folklore and Fairy Tales
We think should be getting
More mainstream attention
Do you like my segue?
I love your segue way
That was beautiful
Isn't it beautiful?
Oh yeah
This is Fairy Tale Fix
Yes, I'm Kelsey
I'm Abby
And on this show
We read each other
Classic fairy and folk tales
And then fix them
ostensibly
for you.
And for me.
Yeah.
We've gotten a couple of requests that we're going to be working through in the next couple of episodes.
Not this one, though.
The request that we were going to, so we got a suggestion.
Not today.
I hate to dangle the carrot and take it away.
Not today.
Send us a lot of requests.
If you have sent us a request and we didn't read it, please send it again because we probably just forgot about it or missed it. And life is hard. So please send it again. We want your request. We do want them. And we are going through and reading them. I've got one on deck for next episode. This episode, though, I decided to do a Dutch fairy tale because I'm going to Amsterdam in two weeks.
very excited. I've never been. So exciting. So also people should write in with their suggestions for what I should do.
Well, this is probably going to come out while I'm in, well, I'm in answered. It doesn't matter. Not, it doesn't matter. Right. Anyway, I was originally going to do the Wicker husband because Wicker, the movie is coming out soon. It comes out now.
late October.
Okay.
So we've got a little while.
There's a little while, but like I'm probably, it was sent in by Rabia,
um,
who I love that you thought of us through this one,
Rabia.
Um,
it is exactly,
it is exactly to our tastes.
I really,
I really enjoyed reading it.
It's a fantastic,
like,
story,
but it is apparently like an original short story.
Um,
by Ursula Wills Jones.
And I think that that's probably where Kelsey and I'd like usually draw the line for reading on the podcast.
Yeah.
Is if it's not like a a folk tale.
Mm-hmm.
Yep.
If it's not like sort of like a more public domain folk tale that like someone translated or even like even like rewrote a little to make it.
Um, collectible.
Mm-hmm.
we'll usually do those, but we can't, can't, can't, can't read, can't buy Ursula's book and then read it to you.
Yeah.
I do think, I think the fairy tellers are either came out with an episode or are coming out.
They were talking about Wicker and folklore or, um, making husbands, like, or making a spouse.
Because that is an actual, like, yeah, that's like a, that's a common folklore theme.
So definitely check them out. And I will too because I'm very interested. I think before that episode or before that movie comes out, maybe we'll find a couple that have a similar theme. Yeah. To get prepared. Yeah. Because making your husband or wife is definitely something that I feel like we've seen that in a fairy tale before. Or at least somebody, I remember somebody made their horse out of, out of like tar.
And straw.
Yep.
Still mad.
That was a fun one.
Now my brain is totally derailed trying to remember those stories.
But yes, I'm sure there's a lot of them.
We can definitely find some.
And also, like, the short story, the Wicker Husband is really, really good.
Oh, is the Straw Horse.
Check it out.
Episode 56.
I thought the straw horse was the one where like someone used like changed a read into a horse.
And that was the whole thing with the horse.
Wasn't the straw horse like the like animals kept getting attached to it or stuck to it or something?
Oh, okay.
Yes.
I remember that one now.
I don't have to read.
I need to re-listen.
There are so many fairy tales we've read that I don't remember.
And they're so good.
And I feel sad that I think I've forgotten about them.
There's only so much room up there for information, you know.
I have a bunch of like stupid work information up here instead that I can't forget.
And I wish that I remembered the fairy tales better.
Yeah.
Normally I'd say my brain's applesauce.
Today, right now it's a yarn.
It's just a big ball of yarn in there.
It's just a big ball of yarn rolling around, unspooling.
A tangled mess.
Oh.
goodness. All right. Okay.
Well, what fairy tale? But I'm not doing
a Dutch fairy tale. I am doing.
I am doing, oh, I'm opening up
Instagram, I guess.
Very loudly.
Okay. I am going to do
okay. So this story
is called Prince Spinhead
and Miss Snow White.
This is from
a fairy tale, like a
Dutch fairy tale collection called Dutch fairy tales for young folks by William Elliot Griffiths.
Fun.
Yeah.
Dutch fairy tales for young folks.
Yep.
Okay.
I read a couple of them in here.
A lot of them are very good.
There's a mermaid one that I may save for next summer.
And then there's also one that I almost read today, which maybe I'll do it later, that
definitely maybe go what the actual fuck a couple different times.
But this one I wanted to read because it feels very like Septembery to me.
It feels very like change of the seasons, you know, at some point winter will come.
I like that.
Oh.
Type thing.
And then there's another reason why I chose this one that feels very Octobery.
But I can't I can't tell you.
what it is without revealing the twist in the story.
Okay.
I'm so excited.
Yeah.
Perfect timing.
Give me three predictions.
Because at the very beginning of a quick weather corner, we had like right at the
beginning of September, we've had a little bit of like rain and the weather got really chilly.
And it was awesome.
I mean, it's going right back up into the mid 80s, like low 90s.
But sure.
It was just like a nice little like, hey, bitch, fall is here.
Quit being so depressed.
And maybe go outside.
Yeah, you know, I think that that's like,
I'm really looking forward to September and October
because like it's just, it's been so hot and so muggy
and full of mosquitoes and I don't want to go outside.
And fall is here.
And all of my favorite things are in fall.
I'll cheer up.
And you're going to fucking Amsterdam.
Hell yeah.
Where they do a lot of apple cider related.
stuff.
Oh, man.
And there should be good leaf peeping.
I'm so jealous.
It's going to be a delight.
Yeah, that sounds amazing.
Okay.
My first prediction, Prince Spinhead and Miss Snowwhite.
Mm-hmm.
Spinhead.
What is that mean?
I don't, I can't tell you.
All right.
Well, since you mentioned apples, I'm going to predict apples.
prediction number two um on top of apples important food that may be the apples and maybe something else
the other Dutch story we read was the boy who wanted more cheese which is also in this book
I need to buy this book that was a great story okay and then let's see my last prediction is
I don't know.
The prince needs to save Snow White.
Okay.
Damsel in distress.
Damsel in distress.
That's a great prediction.
I'm going to predict that instead more less specifically.
That's a little more general.
Yeah.
Although it would be really fun if it were the other way around.
Just saying.
You could predict some, you could predict, I don't know, distressed love interest.
It's not.
not going to be snow white saving
Prince Spinhead. I wish.
I'm going to say nothing
because you will find out very soon.
Okay.
I'm going to do a quick
geography corner because it's been a while
since we've done a Dutch story.
So the Netherlands
is on the
north coast of Europe
of mainland, like central Europe,
mainland western Europe.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
It is across the channel from the United Kingdom.
It is bordered by Germany to sort of like the southeast.
And then directly to the south, it is bordered by Belgium.
And then, yeah, then there's just a big old expansive sea all the way up to Sweden from there.
And then Denmark is sort of.
sort of like up on the peninsula, but it does not border the Netherlands.
Oh, and then that is also friends where the North Sea is.
Apparently that big expanse between the Netherlands and Sweden.
That is the North Sea.
You're welcome.
I didn't know that.
If someone ever talks about the North Sea, that's what they're talking about.
Hell yeah.
Hell yeah.
So that's the Netherlands.
Our story takes place in Gelderland, which is one of the Dutch provinces.
I'm trying to pick out where it is on the map.
Hang on Gilderland.
It's the largest province by land area in the Netherlands, according to Wikipedia,
located in the central and eastern part of the country,
with a population of about 2 million people.
Wow, that's a lot.
That's a lot.
So that is where our story is set.
Hell yeah
Hell yeah
Okay
Prince Spinhead and Miss Snow White
Long long ago
Before the Romans came into the land
And when the fairies ruled in the forest
There was a maiden who lived under an oak tree
When she was a baby
They called her Bundlekin
She had four brothers
Who loved their younger sister very dearly
And did everything they could
To make her happy
Her fat father was a famous
hunter.
When he roamed the woods,
fat with a pH.
He's fat, yeah.
He sounds fat,
and then also he is fat with an F.
I love it.
He's a big guy.
Hell yeah.
And he roams the woods.
He's an icon, he's a king.
He is the best hunter in all of Gelderland.
Yeah, he is.
And when he roams the woods,
no bear, wolf, aurex,
roebuck, deer, or any big animal,
of any kind could escape from his arrows, his spear, or his pit traps.
Hell yeah.
Hell yeah.
He's very prodigious.
He taught his sons to be skillful in the chase, but also to be kind to the dumb creatures
who were captured.
Especially when the mother beast was killed, the boys were always told to care for the cubs,
whelps, and kittens.
And as for smaller animals, foxes, hares, weasels, rabbits, and ermine, they were so numerous
that the father left the business of hunting them to the lads who had great sport.
I love a huntsman that respects the wildlife.
Absolutely.
You know, he is a code.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, you know, he's still killing people's, killing people's moms and skinning them.
Yeah.
But you have to make sure you take good care of her cubs afterwards.
Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
And that's, you know what?
Until they get old enough to hunt.
Until they get old enough to hunt.
Well, you know, I mean, that's good, that's good huntsmanship as you make sure you're painting, you know, your future, whatever, and you're not making too big a stamp on the ecosystem.
He's an environmentalist hunter.
Hell yeah.
Yeah.
Oh, my God.
I've said hell.
I've been saying hell yeah so much lately.
Very California.
Hell yeah.
Me too, actually.
I've been, I've been responding to texts that way until I remember that, like, the people I'm texting might have.
actually care about using the word hell so casually.
I do hell yeah and then the emoji with the sunglasses.
With hell yeah.
Nice.
Maybe you're the reason I've been saying it more.
Maybe.
I've noticed, I've just noticed, I'm like, why is this suddenly in my vocabulary so much?
Who can say?
The house under the oak tree was always well provided with meat and furs.
And the four brothers brought the little animals which they took in the woods to make
presence to their sister. So there was always plenty of pets, bear and wolf cubs, wildcats,
kittens, and baby aurochs for the girl to play with. And every day, when the animals were so
young as to be fed on milk, she enjoyed frolicing with the four-footed babies. And when they grew
bigger, she romped and sported with them as if she and they were equal members of the same family.
Very interesting.
A little wildling. Little wild girl. That's, that was my dream. Like growing up, I would
go into the park and pretend that it be friends with all the wild animals or that I was one.
Yes.
And like imagine you got like adopted by a lion pride or.
Exactly.
Yeah.
Absolutely.
So she's kind of living the dream.
Like the dream of the dream of every slightly feral little girl.
Yeah.
Aw.
Aw.
The older brothers watched carefully so that the little brutes as they
increased inside should not bite or claw his sister, for he knew the fierce nature that was
in wild creatures.
Yet the maiden had wonderful power over these beasts of the forest, whether little or big.
She was not very much afraid of them and often made them run by looking at them hard in the eye.
Literally the dream.
Literally the dream.
Like this is what I pretended.
That's what I pretended like every day when I was a kid.
Mm-hmm.
I love this.
Like you were friends with the animals, but also that they would like obey you.
Like you've got mastery over the forest creatures.
Exactly. Yeah.
It's fucking cool.
No. She's fucking cool.
While the girl made a pet of the animals, her parents made a pet of her.
The mother prepared the skins of the wolves and bears until these were very soft, keeping the fur on to make rugs to the floor and winter coats for her children.
The hides of the aryx suffice for rougher use, but from what had once been the clothes of the fawn, the weasel, the rabbit, and the ermine garments were made that were smooth enough to suit a baby's tender flower.
The forest folk wrapped their infants in swaddling hands made of these dressed pelts.
After feeding the darling, a mother hung her baby up warmly covered to a tree branch,
and the cradle, which was a furry bag, was made of the same material and swung in the wind.
Bundlekin usually fell asleep right after she had her breakfast.
When she woke up crowing, the squirrels were playing all around her.
She even learned to watch the spiders spinning their houses of silk without being afraid.
And when Bundlekin grew up, she always called this curious creature that could make silk spinhead.
She jokingly.
Ooh, interesting.
It's about a little girl who lives in the woods and fucking loves spiders.
And that's why.
Like spin butt.
Spin butt.
I know.
Spinhead is wrong, but it's spin butt.
Yeah.
We're naming this Prince Spinbutt.
It's Prince Spinbutt now.
Girl after my own heart.
Absolutely.
Yeah.
This story is about me.
I picked this story because it seemed, it was like,
this is a very Kelsey fairy tale.
Anything with spiders.
Like,
not because anything especially what the fuck happens,
but it's about a little girl who like loves the woods and animals and spiders.
Yep.
In particular.
It is.
It's about me.
Okay.
So she calls this mysterious creature Spinhead.
And she jokingly called it her lover in remembrance of baby days.
It was funny to see how deft the mother was with her needles fashioned from bone and her rough thread, which is made of the intestines of the deer.
From her own childhood in the woods, Bundlkin's mother had been used to this kind of dressmaking.
and now when her daughter had grown from babyhood and through her teens to be a lovely maiden,
fair of face and strong of limb, the skins of fons, martins, and weasels, she added trimmings
of snow-white ermine. Caps and mittens, cloaks for the body, coverings for the feet,
were fashioned to fit neatly. Fringes here and there were put on them until her girl looked like
a king's daughter. In summer, the skins of birds and their feathers clothed her lightly,
and with many and rich colors while the forest flowers decorated her hair.
hair.
Ooh.
Pretty.
So many details about, like, what they're wearing and what they're using with the
animals.
Yeah.
And then also, like, the construction of it, like what her mother is using to make these
things.
I really enjoy that.
A lot of detail.
Mm-hmm.
I think it's kind of cool.
Mm-hmm.
It kind of reminds me of, like, the botanical folk tales.
Yeah.
Of Lisa Schneido, like, how she kind of adds a lot of specifics, like, specifics.
like specific flowers or you know what I mean yeah and then like animals and then exactly and like
how you might dress a beautiful young forest maiden in winter her white forest robes the maiden except for her
rosy face no sorry in winter in her white forest robes the maiden except for her rosy face and sparkling
eyes seemed as if she might have been born of the snow or was a daughter of the northern ice god.
And because she was so lovely, her parents changed her baby name and called her Drifa, which means
snow white.
Oh, Dritha.
That's pretty.
Yeah.
It is pretty.
Yeah.
I think it's a name that's actually still in use.
Oh, cool.
How do you spell it?
D-R-I-F-A.
D-R-I-F-A.
I love that.
Although according to
hang on.
I'm looking at
this is a website called
The Bump, which it has
like a lot of etymology and baby name.
Yeah.
Stuff. So Drifa is apparently a
Icelandic name usually
and it means snow drift.
Fall of snow.
According to this, but like
apparently, you know, I guess it's a
yeah, it doesn't matter.
The name is related to snow.
Yes.
in various languages.
Yet, though no other girl in Gelderland equaled, and none, not even the princesses,
excelled Snow White in beauty of face, form, or raiment, the maiden was not happy, even though
many lovers came to her and offered to marry her.
Some, as proof of their skill as hunters, brought the finest furs the forest furnished.
Others showed their strength or fleetness of foot.
Some bargained with the cobotours, which is like a Dutch-like.
fairy like underground fairy creature that like works mines and stuff cool yeah i want to know more about
that later uh so some bargained with like these like minor fairies to bring them shining ore or
precious gems which they then offered to snow white and once and others again went afar to get
strange wonders amber and ambergris from the seashores of the far north to please her
One fine fellow who had been in the South and was proud of his travels told her of what he had seen in the great cities and offered her a necklace of pearls.
Wow, so fancy.
So fancy.
Everybody wants her.
She's so beautiful.
But it's also because she's super cool and she's mistress of the forest.
Yeah.
She commands animals.
Who wouldn't want that?
Who wouldn't want that in a wife?
But nobody was as good as old spin-butt.
Hell no.
It was all in vain.
Every lover went away sorrowful for Snow White,
wearied of them and sent each one home disappointed.
Thanks for the necklace.
Thanks.
Thanks.
You're boring.
Last of all, among the lovers came a strange-looking one named Spinhead,
resembling a spider, promising a secret worth more than furs, gold,
or necklace, but the mother, seeing the ugly creature, drove it off with hard words.
So it's like a man-sized spider.
Oh.
Which is pretty...
I don't want a king shame, but...
No.
No, thank you.
It said resembles a spider, right?
Yeah, a strange-looking lover named Spinhead resembling a spider.
So I don't like I don't know quite how to interpret that.
Like is this a man-sized spider?
How else does one resemble a spider without being a spider?
With a bunch of eyes?
Does he just have a bunch of eyes?
Does he have a bunch of legs?
Yeah.
I don't know what resembling a spider means.
And honestly, I think it's left intentionally vague.
I like it.
Me too.
He's just real pointy.
Yeah.
He just really pointy thing.
really pointy features. Maybe fangs? I don't know.
Anyway, go on. But he has a Spider-Man.
She's into it. She might be.
She's going to be so into it. She wants that. She wants that spin-butt.
She wants that spin-butt. What that spin-butt do is her question.
What that spin-butt do.
Anyway, so the months and the year,
pass until her father feared he would not live to see his daughter married.
But one day when all the household were absent, the leaves of the oak tree rustled loudly.
There was no wind, and snow white surprised, strained her ears to find out what this might mean.
Soon she could make out these words.
When the spider that you called Spinhead comes to make love to you, listen to him.
He is the wisest being in all the forest.
He knows the future.
He will tell you a secret.
I shall pass away, but what he teaches you shall live.
And I don't think they mean like make love to get, make love to her and have sex.
They mean like that's what you used to like people used to call it that an old timey language.
When you were saying romantic things to someone, you were making love to them.
All right.
It's words.
It's verbal.
You're going to tire up.
The web.
Ooh.
Let that web do.
Maybe. Maybe what that web do.
I'm, I don't know how I feel about this.
I promise you, making love means words.
I don't know, Abby.
I don't know.
Okay.
Still.
Still, it's still weird.
It's still weird.
It's just, you know.
It sounds straight up bestiality with a spider yet.
You know.
Okay.
Anyway, he's going to tell her secrets and she should listen to him.
What secrets?
That's enticing.
Right?
I want to know spider secrets.
I don't, me too.
So the leaves of the oak ceased to rustle and all was quiet and still again.
While wondering what message might mean, down came the real spider she had named Spinhead.
He lowered himself from a tree branch high above on a silken thread.
The creature sat down on the log beside the maids.
but she was not in the least startled and did not scream nor run away. Instead, she spoke to
the spider as an old friend. Well, playmate of my babyhood, what have you to tell me?
I came to offer you my love. You need not marry me yet, but if you will let me spin a web in your
room, I shall live there and buy and buy reward you. Let me be in your sight always and you will
not be sorry for it. I mean, I always let spiders hang out in my house. Yes, you do.
You cultivate them even.
You feed them on purpose.
I don't know about that.
You've done that before, haven't you?
I think I thought about it.
I had those spiders living in my office and I was like,
should I go buy them some gnats?
Maybe little jumping spiders.
It was a family of jumping spiders.
Leslie, the mother.
I named her Leslie.
Anyway.
Oh my God, you named them all up to parks and wreck characters.
I forgot about that.
Yeah.
Yeah, I pulled that.
deep in the memory a bank.
So the maiden, who is a very Kelsey-ish-type maiden,
said, sure.
You don't have to marry me yet.
Not yet.
Someday, you definitely have to marry this spider.
But right now he just wants to spend a web in your room.
And that's cool.
That's fine.
And I want to watch you all the time with all.
How many eyes do spiders have?
Is it eight eyes?
I think it's eight.
I have to Google it.
Sorry.
Yeah,
eight eyes.
I'm sure it varies.
For some.
I'm just going to watch you all day, every day in your bedroom.
From eight different little video cameras.
This is a purve.
Yes.
This is true.
The maiden had no sooner agreed than a terrible tempest uprooted the oak
and leveled the trees of the forest. In a moment more, a new and very beautiful house rose up
out of the ground. It was as noble to look at as a palace. Nearby was a garden, and one day,
when she walked in it, out sprang a blue flower almost under her feet.
Choose the best room for your own self, said Spinhead, and then show me my corner. After a hundred
days, if you treat me kindly, I shall reveal the secret of that blue flower. Dreyfa chose the sunniest
room and gave spinhead the best corner near the window and close to the ceiling.
And once he began to weave a shining web for his own house.
Aw.
So it's also like, it's a little Charlotte's webby.
Yeah, it is.
He's going to write some pig, some girl.
Writing messages up in the web.
Exactly.
Hey girl.
Little love notes.
Exactly.
He's going to make love to her from the web.
What is it, W-Y-D?
Or you up.
You up?
Booty call messages.
Hey girl, you up.
She wondered at such fine work which no human weaver could excel and why she was not,
and why she was not able to spin silk out of her head, it's out of your butt, girl.
Nor even with her fingers, like her strange lover.
But the oak had promised that spin head would reveal a secret and she was curious to know what it was.
Like all girls, she was in a her heart.
to have the secret.
To ease her impatience,
Drifa looked on
while Spinhead was thus busy
at making his dwelling place
with shining threads
which he spun out,
never ceasing.
She was so intent
upon watching him that night.
That night came down
before she noticed
that her room was not furnished.
There wasn't even a bed
to sleep on.
Oh, no.
Yeah.
Oh, I guess you're going to have
to sleep in the web.
I got to have to sleep in the web.
There was only one web.
Classic.
Classic trope.
Spinhead looked at her closely
and then spoke with a deep voice like a man's.
I don't know what voice he had been speaking with earlier.
But now he's talking like this.
What the fuck?
What the fuck indeed?
Yeah.
Ah, I know you want a bed and pretty things for your room.
In another moment, soft furs lined the floor, and soon all that Drifa had possessed in the forest for comfort she had now and more.
Lost in wonder as she was, in a few minutes, she was fast asleep.
She dreamed, she wore a dress of some strange new white fabric such as her people had never seen before.
Instead of being close in texture like the skin of an animal, it was open work full of thousands of little holes, yet strongly held together.
It was light and gauzy, like a silvery spider's web on the summer grass before sunrise when pearly with dewdrops.
Who wore it better?
Dreytha or Frodo Baggins.
I don't know Dreypha.
Frodo looked dead.
Oh, gosh.
The hundred days were passing swiftly by, and Spinhead and Snow White had become fast friends.
Each lived in a different world, a world within a world.
She was waiting for the secret he would tell her.
She bravely resolved not to be impatient, but let Spinhead speak first.
And one day, when Autumn had come and she was lonely, she sauntered out into the garden.
The chill winds were blowing and the leaves falling till they covered the ground like a yellow carpet.
One fell into her hand as if it bore words of friendly greeting.
Yet, though she waited, not one of the millions of them brought a message to her.
Can you believe these falling leaves are saying fucking nothing?
I know.
The audacity.
The audacity.
Never a word had she ever heard from her parents and brothers.
The blue flower had not had long ago fallen away and there was nothing in its place but a hard, rough black stock.
Then she said to herself, is there anything in this ugly stick?
How will Spinhead reveal his secret?
She was very cast down.
The secret is there is no secret.
There is no secret.
The secret is he's,
I'm waiting until I wear you down, I guess, in my beautiful house.
And also, what did happen to your family when I made your old house disappear?
Who can say?
Who knows?
Who knows?
But you haven't heard from them.
And like also the leaf thing I thought was really curious because it's like, that's not
established anywhere earlier in the story.
Yeah.
Were you expecting them to say something?
Yeah.
And is that how?
how your family communicates?
Via leaf?
Via leaf letter?
Unclear.
Again, the tempest howled.
All the winds of heaven seemed to have broken loose.
Many a sturdy oak lay prostrate.
The leaves darkened the air so snow white could see nothing.
Then there was a great calm.
And the maiden cleared her sight and lo there beside her stood a youth more beautiful
than any of her brothers or her lovers or any man she had ever seen.
he was dressed in white clothing excelling in its texture any skin of fawn or animal of the forest instead of being leather however soft it seemed woven of a multitude of threads and in his hand he held the black stock of what had been the blue flower what's the black stock what's the black stock we're almost done you'll find out i'm ready i'm ready to know the secret i am spinhead he said the hundred days are over the spell is
broken and my deliverance from enchantment has come. I bring to you as my gift, this ugly
stock on which the blue flower bloomed. Thanks, I guess. I bring you this ugly stock.
Between surprise at the change of thinhead from a spider to a handsome youth and disappointment
at such a present offered her, Snow White was struck dumb. She could hardly draw breath. Was that all?
Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
I'm with her.
That's it.
All right.
That's it.
Break it open, said Spinhead.
Splitting the stalk from end to end, the maiden was surprised to find inside many long, silky fibers, almost as fine as the strands and a spider's web.
She pulled them out and her eyes danced with joy.
Plant the seed and let the blue flowers blossom by the millions, said the youth.
Then gather the stalks and from the flowers.
then gather the stocks and from the fibers,
weave them together and make this.
And he means his clothing, like the fabric.
The black rod is a scepter of wealth.
Your gauzy, sticky outfit.
His gauzy, sticky, webby outfit.
No, it turns out that this is like the origins,
like the Dutch origin story of the flax plant.
So like this is like linen.
woven from flax.
Oh, so fancy.
Which is a brand new thing, apparently.
Yeah.
So, you know, hence the spider metaphor.
Yeah, yeah.
So she separates the delicate strands one by one,
and Spinhead wove them together.
The result was a rich robe of snow white fabric
never seen in the forest.
It was linen.
Snow white clapped her hands with joy.
Tis for your wedding dress,
if you'll marry me, said Spinhead.
And Snow White's cheek blushed red
And she looked at him
And her eyes said yes
Oh
I mean he is more beautiful
Than anyone she's ever seen
Yeah
He's more beautiful than her dad
And her brothers
And those are the only men
She's ever seen in her whole life
Well I guess that's not true
I just remember
I just remember that all those suitors
Oh yeah
Came as well
So like okay
She's seen men besides
Like her literal family members
I forgot about the
suitors too.
This is a weird story.
That's a shame because they went really far abroad to gather all of those items for her.
They even brought a pearl necklace.
They did.
Important pearls.
There were important pearls.
Not important enough.
Not important food.
No.
Not important enough.
And I'm not getting any points.
No.
She's also not in distress.
She's just hanging out.
No, she's been fine.
I guess he was kind of in distress because she needed.
to break a curse.
He was.
Mm-hmm.
Yep.
But nope, not her.
So I guess she kind of is saving him.
I guess that's kind of, I mean, not like my pretty much.
He was a bit of a damsel in distress.
Not enough.
He was stuck as a spider.
Is that part of it?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
He was stuck as a spider.
We don't find out how or why or if he really didn't like it very much.
It seems like he was pretty cool living as a spider.
But how old is he?
I guess.
No, no.
That's fine.
At least as old as she is,
because, like,
they were, like,
this is the same spider
that she was a playmate with
in childhood.
That's an old spider.
I don't think they're a pretty old spider.
What?
I don't think they live that long.
They don't.
But maybe enchanted print spiders do.
She agrees to marry him
with her eyeballs,
not with her words,
but that's good enough.
And then Spinhead
makes her a bridal veil,
Once more, his fingers wrought wonders.
He produced yards of gauzy open work stuff.
He made it float in the air first.
Then he threw it over her head.
It trailed down her back and covered her rosy face.
It was lace.
He invented lace.
Nice.
It is cool.
Thanks, spin butt.
Thanks, spin butt.
Happily married, they left the forest and traveled into the land where the blue flax flowers
made a new sky on the earth.
Soon the map man read the names of
cities unknown before.
The math men, whoever they are.
At a time when Europe had no such
masses of happy people, joyous
in their toil,
Cortre, Tournay,
Ghent, and Bruges told what the blue
flower of the flax had done for the country.
More than gold, gems,
or wealth of the forest or mine was
the gift of Spinhead to Snow White
for the making of Belgium.
The end.
Yay!
That was definitely a story.
I don't like it.
I feel like, I don't know.
I'm going to give it a,
like a maybe a six out of ten.
Wow, six out of ten.
Like it was good.
Not my favorite.
I feel like I want to know more about his spiders.
and why he was a spider.
It just sort of just happened.
It wasn't like they had to do anything.
It just sort of like as, you know what I mean?
It's true.
It was like a passive storyline.
It was.
But I liked the vibes.
It was very Septembery vibes.
I wish that like there had been more of a story about the feral little girl.
Yeah, that was cute.
And that that had been most of the story.
Like I don't.
I don't necessarily care that she grows up and marries the prince and founds Belgium, apparently.
Yeah.
I think that's part of it is that it started off so strong with such a cool character that she,
but she didn't have very much personality other than like what you heard about her as a kid.
Mm-hmm.
She was very promising in the beginning.
Mm-hmm.
She's just sort of like, yeah, okay, whatever.
And then things just happen to her.
It's not like she's making anything happen.
you know.
Very true.
Do you have a fix other than a story about the fair little girl?
I wish the beginning were longer and the prince was a much,
much shorter part of it.
Yeah.
But I do like, I like, but I like the vibes of the story.
I liked all of the, um, like descriptions of like, I kind of liked that it was like a story
about garment making and the origins of like the certain kinds of garment making.
Yeah. And we got a lot of detail about like animal fur and bone needles and yeah, a lot of
live in the woods. Like there are so many elements, elements of the story, which I really,
really like, which is why I picked it and decided to read it. But yeah, the ending is kind of,
meh. Yeah. There was a spider. He turned into a man. They found out. If they had a little more
personality or purpose. And also her just saying, yes with her eyes. I don't know. It's kind
weird.
Very weird.
Yeah.
It leaves me wanting more from both of them as characters.
As a story, it's fine.
Yeah.
The story I am telling you is called Shippitaro, and it is from Japan.
I found it on fairy tales with a z.com, but it's from Andrew Lang's Violet Fairy Book.
Oh, okay.
Hmm.
Do you have that one?
I do. I do have that one, but I have not read this story.
I know. And I read it specifically because it doesn't tell you anything.
Nothing. It's a great way to choose fairy tales.
Yeah, usually they're pretty fun.
Is it too obvious to guess that Shipitaro was a name?
No, I don't think so.
Okay.
Shipitaro is a name.
Wait, a name of what?
The main character.
I was just wondering, because it could be like a city name or a mountain name.
Exactly.
And this is more specific.
I guess name it could be anything.
It doesn't matter anyway.
We've been on a dragon theme lately.
There's a dragon in it.
Okay.
Someone gets turned into an animal.
Or vice versa.
There's animal transformation.
Animal transformation.
I like it.
Animal transformation.
It's funny because I read this story a little while ago when we were originally going to read it and I don't really remember all of it.
Okay, great.
I feel like it's going to feel new for me too.
Okay.
Here we go.
And apologies if I'm not pronouncing this correctly.
I did look it up.
A couple places said Skipitaro,
but I'm pretty sure it's Shipitaro.
Okay.
And here we go.
It was custom in the old times
that as soon as a Japanese boy reached manhood,
he should leave his home and roam through the land
in search of adventures.
Yep.
Pretty typical.
Standard, yeah.
Love it.
Got to go out and make your fortune.
Mm-hmm.
Sometimes he would meet with a young,
young man bent on the same business as himself, and then they would fight in a friendly manner,
merely to prove which was the stronger, but on the other occasions the enemy would turn out
to be a robber who would become the terror of the neighborhood, and then the battle was in deadly
earnest. One day, a youth started off far from his native village, resolved never to come back
till he had done some great deed that would make his name famous. But Adventures did not seem
very plentiful just then.
And he wandered about for a long time
without meeting either with
without meeting either with fierce
giants or distressed damsels.
I'm so sorry for him.
I'm really sad. The world is not cooperating.
I know. He's like, this is a
boring adventure I'm having.
This is bullshit.
In the stories,
the land is riven with giants
that are stealing maidens left and right.
What am I supposed to fucking do?
I feel like that's all of us
in the real world where it's like you were expecting something exciting to happen in your life,
and then it just does.
Then it just doesn't.
Until it does.
At last, he saw in the distance a wild mountain, half covered with a dense forest,
and thinking that this promised well at once, he took the road that led to it.
The difficulties he met with huge rocks to be climbed, deep rivers to be crossed, and thorny
tracks to be avoided, only served to make his heartbeat quicker, for he was really brave all
through, and not merely when he could not help himself, like a great many people.
But in spite of all his, I feel like this is kind of like written old time, yes.
It is a little bit, yeah.
So I feel like some of that doesn't really make sense, but it doesn't.
Yeah.
That's why, that's why I'm like sitting here like, uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh. Yeah.
He's finally finding a little adventure, and he's a very brave boy.
That's exciting for him.
I love it.
But in spite of all his efforts, he could not find his way out of the forest, and he began to think he should have to pass the night there.
Spooky.
Once more, he strained his eyes to see if there was no place in which you could take shelter.
And this time, he caught the side of a small chapel in a little clearing.
Oh, good, a chapel in the middle of the forest.
He hastened.
Better go toward it.
Better go toward it.
We'll mean also just kind of like,
okay, excellent.
Now the adventure can start
because clearly that's weird.
Yeah, that is what he was looking for.
He hastened quickly toward it
and curling himself up in a warm corner
soon fell asleep.
Not a sound was heard
through the whole forest for some hours,
but at midnight there suddenly arose
such a clamor that the young man,
tired as he was, started broad awake
in an instant. Peeping cautiously between the wooden pillars of the chapel, he saw a troop of
hideous cats, dancing furious. Yes, excellent. Making the night horrible with our yells.
Making it horrible. Which is amazing. I want to see that so bad. Me too. The full moon lighted
up the weird scene and a young warrior gazed with astonished.
taking great care to keep still, lest he should be discovered.
After some time, he thought that in the midst of all their shrieks, he could make out the words,
Do not tell Shepitaro, keep it hidden in secret.
Do not tell Shippato.
Then, the midnight hour having passed, they all vanished, and the youth was left alone,
exhausted by all that had been going on around him.
He flung himself to the ground and slept till the sun rose.
I would assume that would be like a dream.
Dancing cats.
Mm-hmm.
Who were all screaming about,
who were like yelling
not to tell you something.
Mm-hmm.
The moment he woke,
he felt very hungry
and began to think
how he could get something to eat.
So he got up and walked on.
And before he had gone very far,
he was lucky enough to find
a little side path
where he could trace
the men's footsteps.
He followed the tracks
and by and by
came on some scattered huts,
beyond which lay a village.
Delighted to him,
his discovery, he was about to hasten to the village when he heard a woman's voice weeping and
lamenting and calling on the men to take pity on her and help her. The sound of her distress made him
forget he was hungry. Such a brave boy. Such a brave guy. He's off to save that damsel in distress.
Yeah, he is. Finally. So he's actually, he's stoked. He's like, yes. Right. He's like, oh,
hell yeah. Hell yeah. Hell yeah.
The sound of her distress made him forget he was hungry,
and he strode into the hut to find out for himself what was wrong.
But the men whom he asked only shook their heads and told him it was not a matter of which he could give any help.
For all the sorrow was caused by the spirit of the mountain,
to whom every year they were bound to furnish a maiden for him to eat.
Ooh, oh yeah.
I mean, that's bad.
That's wrong, obviously.
Yeah.
It's very exciting.
Mm-hmm.
Tomorrow night, they said.
The horrible creature will come for his dinner,
and the cries you've heard were uttered by the girl before you,
upon whom the lot has fallen.
So, yeah, they have to sacrifice a poor maiden.
Obviously.
To keep the mountain spirit from eating all of them.
Absolutely.
Sounds like this is decided by lots.
Everybody knows this in the village.
He definitely wants a maiden and nobody else.
You can't, it can't just be.
be anybody. She's got to be young. She must be beautiful.
Pretty. Yeah.
And when the young man asked if the girl was carried off straight from her home,
they answered no, but that a large cask was set in the forest chapel and into this,
and into this she was fastened. So they're like tire and throw her in the chapel.
Just plugged up. As he listened to the story, the young man was filled with a great
longing to rescue the maiden from her dreadful fate because he's a good person.
The mention of the chapel
set him thinking of the scene
of the previous night
and he went over all of the details
again in his mind.
Who is Chippatoro?
He suddenly asked.
Can any of you tell me?
Shipitaro is the great dog
that belongs to the overseer of our prince.
And he lives not far away.
And they began to laugh at the question
which seems so odd and useless.
And doggie.
He's a giant doggie.
Shipitaro is a good boy.
I am stupid because in my head,
I had already decided the character's name was Shipitaro.
Even though you did not say that at any point,
at any point in my head,
his name was still Shipitaro,
which is why I was so confused that they were screaming,
don't tell him, but he's standing right there.
Oh, that's funny.
But you never said that was his name.
And I now realize.
Usually, if it's a name, it's the main character.
Yeah.
But I love this so much more that it's a giant dog.
I know.
It's not great.
Yeah, that's great.
It's a good boy.
He's a good boy.
The young man did not laugh.
I love that it's like a bunch of cats that are like, don't tell the dog.
Don't tell Shippato, which is so much funnier.
The young man.
not laugh with them, but instead left the hut and went straight to the owner of the dog,
whom he begged to lend him the animal just for one night.
Shipitaro's master was not at all willing to give him in charge to a man of whom he knew nothing,
but in the end, he consented and the youth led the dog away, promising faithfully to return him
the next day to his master.
You better.
That's my dog.
Can I borrow your dog?
I borrow your dog?
Fuck no.
No.
Oh, all right.
Right.
But bring them back.
Actually, as a dog owner, please borrow my dog.
You're like, I need a break.
Yeah.
I need a break.
I need a break.
I'm a dog.
Yeah.
You know what?
Please.
I do want him back, but you can absolutely borrow the dog if you want.
That's funny.
So the youth led the dog away and he hurried to the hut where the maiden lived and
and treated her parents to shut her up safely in a closet, after, which he took Shippataro to the
cask and fastened him to it. In the evening, he knew that the cask would be placed in the chapel,
so he hid himself there and waited. Oh my God. Using the dog as bait? Yeah.
Surprise. Surprise. It's not a maiden. It's a fucking dog. It's a fucking dog.
At midnight, when the full moon appeared above the top of the mountain,
the cats again filled the chapel and shrieked and yelled and danced as before.
But this time, they had in their midst a huge black cat who seemed to be their king
and whom the young man guessed to be the spirit of the mountain.
Bro.
Yes.
Yes.
There is artwork of this.
I'm going to show you later.
Please show me.
The monster looked eagerly about him, and his eyes sparkled with joy when he saw the cask.
He bound high into the air with delight and uttered cries of pleasure, and then he drew near and
undid the bolts.
But instead of fastening his teeth in the neck of a beautiful maiden, Shippataro's teeth were
fastened on him, and the youth ran up and cut off his head with a sword.
The other cast were so astonished at the turn things had taken that they forgot to run away,
and the young man and Shippato
between them killed several more
before they thought of escaping.
It was a battle.
A fierce battle.
It was a bloodbath.
At sunrise, the brave dog
was taken back to his master.
And from that time, the mountain girls were safe.
And every year, a feast was held
in memory of the young warrior
and the dog Shippataro.
The end.
Oh my gosh, I love that.
That was so cute.
Isn't that so cute?
I love that it's like a giant
black cat. It makes me think of the Yolo Kuturen from Iceland. Yep, absolutely. Just a giant cat
wreaking havoc on these people. And like eating people, like it's there to drink blood and chew
on people. All right. I'm going to send you a couple pictures. I will post pictures on our
Instagram, but there is artwork of this and it's fucking awesome. It's the good boy. Oh my God. He's such a good boy.
I don't need a good boy and a giant evil like that's a huge cat too but I love that it's still very like cat proportioned yes you know like it just it's improbably large I love a giant evil cat that's got to be my favorite folklore thing ever me too I will say I did um there is a lot of information about this story on Wikipedia um so you could definitely
check that out, read more about it.
It's a pretty, I think a pretty well-known Japanese folk tale.
There's also like, oh, fuck, what's it called?
Kabuki.
Like, this shows up in Kabuki theater sometimes.
Okay.
The tale, which is really cool.
That's really cool.
A lot of times they're not cats, they're monkeys.
Oh, all right.
And in another version, it's called like the monkey.
Oh, shoot, monkey demon.
Okay, I mean, that makes a lot of sense, too, though.
Mountain monkeys are little bastards.
For real.
Like, a monkey would demand the human sacrifice of a young woman.
Okay.
In fact, this folktale is classified as destroying the monkey demon.
So that's a tail type by Japanese.
Oh, okay.
But, yeah, in several other versions, it's cats.
So, awesome.
that's awesome. I loved it.
That was really fun.
I love a story about a boy and his dog.
Yeah, if you ever are having a tough time finding a good fairy tale,
just read something that gives away absolutely nothing, like a name.
It's almost always the best one.
It's almost always a fun surprise.
Yeah.
Anyway, I have zero fixes for that.
I think that's very funny.
That was great.
I love that they have a feast.
For the brave youth, maybe the brave youth could use a name and the maiden could use a name.
I'm satisfied with just the dog.
I know.
I love that the dog is the name character.
As long as it's equal, otherwise.
Like, the only time, like, it's okay if characters don't have names.
I just hate it when it's like the main character is a woman and she doesn't have a name.
Roland?
Roland.
She can't remember.
Did she have a name?
No, I think she was like just the witch's apprentice or.
Yeah.
And she's the main character.
and she's the main character,
but only her stupid boyfriend had an name.
God,
the worst one.
Absolutely.
This is great.
I'm happy with the dog having a name.
I know.
Isn't my gray?
It was so cute.
I love that story.
I thought it was very fun.
And very,
just kind of cute.
Mm-hmm.
Yep.
Just adorable.
Mm-hmm.
And I love that all the cats live in fear of Shipitaro.
Yeah.
Me too.
It's kind of a cat hater's story.
It is a bit of a cat hater story.
Like, you know, but it is funny that like Shibotaro is basically the boogeyman of this cat community.
Oh, maybe what if the lore is that he didn't kill the mountain spirit, it just moved to Iceland.
And now that's the Yule Kufu.
Oh my God.
And that's how the Yule cat was, that's great.
Okay, except for folks.
I'm taking it.
Yeah.
That's great.
It's all connected.
He left and.
went to go find another mountain.
And Grila adopted him.
Mm-hmm.
Perfect.
To a place more hospitable to his demon cat ways.
Exactly.
Mm-hmm.
Where they sacrificed children.
Yeah.
Who were not.
You're not.
I don't know.
Yeah.
Well, but then it's, but then it's like, it's more like it's deserving.
They deserve their punishment.
Yeah.
They just found another, like, they just found another way to.
justify.
Yeah.
Feeding this giant mountain spirit.
Creating this giant mountain spirit cat.
Aww.
Yeah, definitely go to our Instagram

And so
most of the story
of Grifa the Snow White
Girl is still about
this adorable feral child
and her woodland adventures
and her many furs.
I do kind of like that this is a very
unusual animal bridegroom,
so I want to keep part of that
story, but if both
of them had a little bit more personality.
Yeah. Hell yeah.
That would make this
a very excellent story as opposed
to merely a nice one.
And good boy, ship a time.
got all the bones and treats that he deserved.
And the mountain spirit cat ran to Iceland and got adopted by Grila and became the Yolokaturin.
Perfect.
Flawless.
And the young youth got to have many more adventures.
Oh, sure.
Yeah.
He seems awesome.
I really like that kid.
He is here to help.
He is here to stop people from just sacrificing young.
women to the mountain god without trying anything else first yeah exactly good for him love that for him
i hope he went and he rescued a lot of other villages from similar situations and they all lived
happily ever after the end the end
