Fake Doctors, Real Friends with Zach and Donald - 205: My Best Friend's Birthday (New)

Episode Date: October 22, 2026

It’s Turk’s birthday, but JD and Elliot are a little preoccupied by their significant others. What’s supposed to be a chill night with friends ends in betrayal, and somehow, a laugh.... How do they always do that? On the podcast, Zach and Donald are joined by Doctor Dashana Trainor (Amanda Morrow) and Doctor Amara Hadi (Layla Mohammadi) to recount an episode heavily influenced by real-life events. Donald's love of all things steak, Zach's generous spirit, and the Scrubs cast's enduring friendships all take center stage in "My Best Friend's Birthday."   Special Thanks:  EP - Jordan Runtagh Vancouver Producer - James Howells Video Producer - Dylan Unger Director of Photography - Nate Magnuson Sound Mixer - Craig Stauffer Production Designer - Roger Fires Art Director - Kat Dom Set Decorator - Lizzi Pedersen Hair by - Amber Hassa Makeup by - Jennifer Powell Key Makeup Artist - Micah Gilbert Construction Coordinator - Geoff McVarish Paint Coordinator - Matt Ward Assistant Art Director - Jude Hujaij Graphic Design - Katie JohnsonSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

And here's why you'll want to. We'll be your BFFs to tell you what to watch. We'll tell you who you need to care about when it comes to celebrity stuff.

Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I want to welcome our two amazing, lovely co-stars, Lela and Amanda, to fake doctors, real friends. Dunderis, applause now. I want you guys to meet the lovely Joelle Monique, who is our show's producer.
Starting point is 00:02:52 That's my middle name. Your middle name is Joelle? Really? Oh, my gosh. Wow, I never meet anybody named Joel. It's crazy. How do you spell your middle name? J-O-E-N-A.
Starting point is 00:03:00 E-L-E. How do you spell yours? Same way. Oh, my God. Twinsies. I'm so glad you guys are here. I wanted to ask you, have you ever, forgive this if it's a dumb question. Have you been on a podcast before? Have you been on a popular podcast before?
Starting point is 00:03:15 No, well, let's first start with having a menu podcast. Let's go there. No, first podcast? No, we've done a podcast. We did one together, but still it's, yeah, not. All right, well, this is how it goes. This is what's called a rewatch podcast. And so we watch episodes of the television program scrubs, and then we talk about them.
Starting point is 00:03:37 And the fans really love it because they love the show very much, and they want to hear sort of inside stories, funny anecdotes, things about Donald's marriage. They just love everything. You know, I think I forced the marriage part on them. I'm going to be honest with Joe right now. No, I think they're very invested in what's happening with you and Casey and what's happening at the house. We should do a poll. We should find out, Joelle. I don't want to do a poll because what if it turns out negative?
Starting point is 00:04:02 What if they're like, we don't want to hear about that shit anymore? Then we don't talk about that shit no more. I like hearing about it. You guys, I want to talk briefly. We'll get into episode five of season two. That's what we're talking about, 205 today, everybody. But first, I want to talk about your casting process because we didn't have you on season one yet. And I want to just tell us a little about, like, I think that's always interesting, like how you came about auditioning for scrubs.
Starting point is 00:04:28 And what was your story? Lee, let's start with you. I got the first audition when I was actually in Europe. I was having a little European summer trip with a bunch of my friends. And the first one came in and I remember doing a tape in an apartment. And it was so hot and I was dripping sweat. And I was watching clips of scrubs on TikTok. Because I was like, I need to understand before.
Starting point is 00:04:52 You've never seen the show before. I had heard of it. I had not seen me right now. But then I did. It made me watch and I fell in love with it. And then I got nervous. say that. Well, I was nervous when I watched it because then I was like, oh, now I really want the show. So it was better that I didn't know too much about it. And then when I got my first
Starting point is 00:05:08 callback, my team called me and they're like, where in the world are you right now? And you have to do this callback. I need to know the time zone. And I was like, I think I'll be in London. And then I did my first call back there. And then I came in person. And I remember watching this podcast after going in person and you were talking about how you had just seen people in person. And I was like, I was there? This is crazy. Yeah, you were one of the few people we saw in real life because it was very, you know, casting for those of you aren't in the business has really moved to Zoom and the online world. Which is a whole other issue. Yeah, which is a whole other thing. We won't go down the road. But occasionally you do get to see actors in real life. And you were one of the few cases of
Starting point is 00:05:51 that. Obviously, it goes without saying you were fantastic. It was so fun. I remember I was so nervous, but then I walked in the room and everyone was so warm and inviting. And I was like, no matter what happens, I had a great time coming back in person and it felt like you could feel the energy in the room. One thing you get from an actor, director, person is I know how hard it is to walk into a room and I want, and I know that an actor is not going to give a good performance if they're fucking terrified. Yeah, for sure. So we try. And Bill always did this too with us when we were auditioning like to create that safe space so you feel like, you know, you're comfortable, you're safe. Otherwise, who's giving a good audition if they're terrified? I mean, you're still terrified,
Starting point is 00:06:28 obviously. But the most the producer can do, you remember when Bill would do that for us? Dude, yeah, man. He would, well, Bill did a lot for me personally. Like, I blew my first audition, and he was the one that came out into the lobby and was like, Donald, can I talk to you for a second? His final audition. Yeah, this is in front of the studio, the network. Everybody, like, the room was packed. And my first audition, I thought, I felt great about it, to be honest with you. But I guess I got really big as I sometimes do. And he called me into the room. And as I'm walking back, I'm like, he's about to tell me I got the part.
Starting point is 00:07:06 And he turns around and he's like, so you know you blew that the first time. So when you came out, you didn't know that you'd fucked up? I thought I crushed that shit. I'm in the lobby. You were like, I'm in the zone. Yeah, I'm in a lobby with the rest of the actors in the lobby. And we're fucking shooting the shit. And, you know, I'm gassed.
Starting point is 00:07:23 I'm like, these cats are all dead. I just crushed them and he comes back and he's like, no, no, no. You blew that and I need you to go back in and do it the way. And it's a joke that Zach talks about. He's like the way you did it in the first audition. And he gave me a couple of pointers and I went in there and I did it the way he wanted it. And bam. Did you do it the same day?
Starting point is 00:07:44 Same day. Wow. Oh, my God. Back in the day, you guys don't know about this because of you're young. But back in our day, you would go with a final edition would be like in a small office. like some executive's office, and they would cram like literally 35 people into a room. And some of them were on the floor.
Starting point is 00:08:01 Some of them were like leaning on the windowsill. And it would always be a cartoonish amount of people in a small room. And there would just be a chair and you, and you would go. And they've all heard the jokes 9,000 times. One thing, another thing Bill would do is even though he knew that, he would give you laughs. I mean, he wrote the damn thing. He knew.
Starting point is 00:08:20 And he knew that everyone in the room in her. But he was like, he would tell a funny story. he would be like, oh, you know, I wore the same outfit every callback because I was just superstitious. And Bill just turned that into a sort of a warm-up joke for me. He's like, this is Zach. Zach, do you want to tell them how you haven't changed your clothes in a couple weeks? And like, that would get everyone laughing.
Starting point is 00:08:39 He would, like, do a little warm-up bit for you, which was so generous and lovely. If you were to look at all of our tapes when we auditioned for Scrubs, all of us have the same outfit on. You did the same thing? Yeah, Sarah Chalk did the same thing, too. every time I saw her, because Sarah and I auditioned before he did. And every time we only auditioned like three times. But every time I saw Sarah, Sarah had the same blue jeans. I think they were like true religion or some shit like that.
Starting point is 00:09:05 True religion. Yeah, and the same belt buckle and the same t-shirt. I got so into my superstitions. I kept getting callbacks for the show. And I was like, I had literally gone to the gym that morning. I wasn't like in a working out phase of my life. But I had gone to the gym. I had, you know, there was, I had listened.
Starting point is 00:09:23 to certain songs and I was like, I will be doing those exact things. You were ridiculous about it. I went to the gym. I got on the same treadmill. I listened to the same songs in the car. I was like, did you wait if somebody was on the treadmill where you like, I'm going to wait until you get off the treadmill? I think I was going early. I had no money. I was going to the cheapest gym I could find. There was like cobwebs on the treadmill. So it was, no one was competing for it. And anyway, yeah, it's funny. I see that shirt, which I still have. And I smile when I'm like going through my shirts, I can't help but smile at that shirt and being like, we did it. I am superstitious like that too.
Starting point is 00:10:00 I was listening to like the same fray song before every single audition I had for this. Which one? How to Save a Life? How to save a life? That's perfect because it's a very scrub song. All right, Amanda, what's your story? I mean, I know from my perspective, but how did you start your process? I mean, I had definitely had a very 2025 process. in terms of everything was online.
Starting point is 00:10:25 I got the first tape in the mail. And I remember looking at it and I was like, I need to watch the show because I need to know this tone. And I was listening to y'all's podcast from the pandemic. And I was trying to figure out, I was like, okay, this is the tone, this is the vibe. Okay, let's see if we can do it. Let's have a little fun. And I like comedy.
Starting point is 00:10:42 So I was trying to like have a little fun with it. And I also was super-sicious. So I have the same shirt that I wore throughout all of my processes. And my director's call back. and I brought it with me for season one. It's this uniclo green. Uniclo. Yeah, my uniclo t-shirt
Starting point is 00:10:58 that got me through everything. And I remember I had the first callback. They brought me back. And thankfully, I got to do both of my auditions in an office in person. So I did a tape at first. And then the second time I came back, and it was all filmed.
Starting point is 00:11:12 So it was all sent to L.A. And so I did another tape in person. I was like, okay, they want to come back. We're going to, we're going to judge Dishon up a little bit. We're going to try at a different angle. I could do that. I was like, I'm flexible. I'm flexible.
Starting point is 00:11:23 And then I remember I had the director's callback, and I didn't realize that you were going to be there. You didn't realize I was the director. I did not realize that you were. Yeah, I didn't want to throw people because it's tricky because I wanted to be supportive and be there and be like, hey, I'm going to read with you. Like, it's all going to be good. But also, I didn't want to get in people's heads. It was honestly nice. It was so comforting because I remember you said there was something I did and I made you laugh.
Starting point is 00:11:48 And you were like, that was funny. I laughed. And I was like, oh, awesome. Well, it's funny because what happens for those you don't know is that we're all on a Zoom call, right? And then we all, everyone who's not the reader with the actor or actress hides their camera and mutes. So if, and it's tough. It's the opposite of we're in a room together because you would hear me laugh. But on the Zoom thing, I, we all have to mute ourselves.
Starting point is 00:12:11 So I was coming on to be like, hey, I just want you to know that I was laughing at what you were saying. Which made me feel so comfortable because I was like, I'm throwing jokes to the wind right now. See, that's another thing. Back in the day when you're in the room and you had all the producers there, they would laugh and that would give you juice to be like, oh, shit, I'm kind of killing it. Here we go.
Starting point is 00:12:30 And would also scare the shit out of whoever was sitting in the waiting room. In the waiting room, man. I'm not going to say what I audition for, but this, I was, I had already gotten apart and I knew it, right? But I'm sitting there waiting for, to talk to everybody after.
Starting point is 00:12:46 And now they're reading this next character. And this one guy goes in And nobody laughs and he comes out and he sits down. And then the next guy goes in and the whole fucking. Oh, God. That was so hard. It goes crazy. You would hear everybody go.
Starting point is 00:13:02 Yeah. And I know the other guy that went in when he heard the first laugh, he was like, fuck, I'm dead. There were these waiting room games, too, that people would play. I don't know if this still goes on when people, but, like, there's actors out there who, like, they know you're going next and they'll start talking to you. Like, so what have you been up to, man? And they're like, you just start a conversation and you're like, when you're young and naive, you just start going down the road.
Starting point is 00:13:26 And then they go, okay, Zach, and you haven't, you've been like, you're totally lost track of your shit. You forgot your lines. You're not in the zone because this dude was talking your ear off. Yeah, man. Trying to throw your game. That's awful. That's that New York shit. That's how we came up.
Starting point is 00:13:38 That's how we came up. That's how you came up, yo. Oh, yeah, man. There's a lot of waiting room shit. I'll never forget this. Marlon Wayans is a perfect example of this shit. We used to ride the bus, the M-11 bus home every day up in Harlem, right? Well, I would go up to my parents' theater, and he was going to his projects, right?
Starting point is 00:13:57 And I'll never forget this. I would see him at auditions all the time. And one day, we're going into an audition. And, no, he's coming out and I'm going in, and I'm like, yo, where's the thing that? I'm running so late. And he goes, typical Donald. And he goes, oh, it's right there. It's over there.
Starting point is 00:14:16 All you got to do it, go up in that room. I go to the room, it's the motherfucking bathroom. It's the motherfucking bathroom. Oh, my God. He dips out and I come out, but he's about to elevate me. He's like, ah, ha, ha, ha, ha. As the shit closes in his face. I remember a kid who used to cry.
Starting point is 00:14:33 He'd come out swiping his tears at every audition. Like you'd do a wet take or like he was like emotional. I'm saying whatever happened in the room, he would come out crying. And we were all like flipping through our sides, being like, where's the crying scene? Right. And we and but like he just figured out like if he finds this place to cry that they would be like, wow, he's fucking good. He's a good actor. He's a good actor.
Starting point is 00:14:58 He can cry. And and it happened like every, we would always up against us up for the same shit. And he would come out and everyone's sitting in the waiting room and he's swiping away his tears. And we and once somebody asked him like, yeah, why are you? How do you? Why are you crying? And he's like, oh, I just got, I just took me there. I went there.
Starting point is 00:15:16 And I'm like, but it's like a sitcom. And then book? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:24 How do you do that? How do you just like automatically cry on Q all the time? And he was like, I just think anyone be a mean to animals. Oh, my. And he would just start sobbing. Anyway, let's get into 205. Count us in, Donald. Five, six, seven, eight.
Starting point is 00:15:43 About show we, dogs and nurses. All right, here we go, you guys. This is a very good episode. I left quite a bit in this episode. I think this is one of the, I think episode five of season two of the revival is one of the best ones so far. It's a nice ramp up too. Like it starts off and everything's kind of calm. Well, there's a little bit of beef in between Amara and Deshaun in the beginning.
Starting point is 00:16:28 But it starts off kind of calm and by the end of it, it's crazy. Yes, it goes off the rails. and we'll get into it. But I think you guys did such a good job. Your storyline together is so funny. You guys play it so real. I love you guys together. Yes.
Starting point is 00:16:44 You're such a good comic duo together. You take turns playing the straight man. I mean, that's what Donald and I have done for years. We take turns, you know, because if you have two people being broad, it kind of gets muddy. But I think you guys are lovely in your dynamic of taking turns with who's being the crazy person who's being the same one, you know what I mean? And there was a great dance in this one that culminates in the fight in Turk's office, which we'll get to. We'll get to that part.
Starting point is 00:17:11 I want to open with the beach. I want to give a shout out to Roger Fires, our amazing production designer, because we were supposed to shoot this beach stuff on a real beach. But the weather up here in Vancouver, you can never really predict. And it was all of a sudden on those days scheduled to rain. So Roger and his amazing team built a beach on our stage. and that's a green screen. By the time you audience see it, it'll all look real,
Starting point is 00:17:37 but that's a green screen beach on our stage. I want to give him a shout out. Let's talk about the storyline. Okay, so we have Billson back and Scott Foley, and obviously it's very hard to date a doctor with this schedule. And so that's one of the things that this show is getting into, this episode is getting into, is that if you're a loved one of a nurse or a doctor
Starting point is 00:17:57 who works in a hospital, the hours can be grueling. And it can be frustrating, especially in the dating courtship phase. Right. And we learned that early on with Charlie and with Sean that they're, well, Charlie's getting used to it. Sean's been through this before. It reminds him of what his dating life was like with Elliot before. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:18 And, you know, it's funny moments that cold open. I was like, oh, snap, is that what? Are we going to see this a lot this season? and Rachel Bilsen rips open her top and the dude falls Yeah, it collapses. Hindsight being 20-20
Starting point is 00:18:37 this is part of the reason why Sean was like Oh, I didn't even think of that. Yeah. So you're saying the seeds of what happened at the end of the show. In the beginning of the show.
Starting point is 00:18:48 I didn't even think of that when Sean sees how fine Rachel is. He's like, yo, don't you got to be? He even tries to get you out of there. Don't you got to be somewhere, though? There were so many alts to that. Plenty of doctors in the hospital, Sean. He'll be fine, Sean.
Starting point is 00:19:06 Well, Rachel, yeah, I didn't even think of that. The seeds of their relationship are planted at the very top. Yes. You know, so Deshaun and Amar are fighting. We know it's a fruit cup. And we set up because true fans of the show know that Turk and JD used to, when they were broke, interns used to steal fruit cups. So that's what Turk is reminded of. And raccoons are becoming a theme on the show.
Starting point is 00:19:31 Yes. Do you notice that? Yes. They keep coming up, the audience will see that they come up in other episodes. And we keep going back and forth on how you and I pronounce raccoons. Yeah. I say raccoon. You were saying raccoon.
Starting point is 00:19:42 I was saying raccoons. And then you were told it was raccoon. No, but I just thought it would be funny if J.D. pronounced it raccoon. But then what happened was we chose a take where I say raccoon. And I say raccoon. And I say raccoon. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:55 Yeah, yeah, yeah. I just thought it would be a funny, stupid, nonsensical runner if Turk and J.D. both say raccoon. But we ended up putting a take in where I say raccoon and only you say raccoon. Yes. Just wanted to clock that for the audience. I want to pitch this. I don't know if this is happening. This could be a big mistake, but I want to pitch that we get a puppet raccoon at some point in this show.
Starting point is 00:20:18 It would probably be more like, that would be a little too like, what's the golf movie? Caddy Shack. Exactly, yes. I think it would be more like a CGI raccoon. Okay. Because we do have a possum coming up, and I heard that he's going to be a CGI possum. Well, they've come a long way. But puppets look like puppets.
Starting point is 00:20:38 Okay, so y'all are fighting, and I thought it was funny when Amanda DeShanna says, I kind of saw it coming when you're talking about how your wife left you. Oh, yeah. That's fucked up, man. It's so. But if, yeah, but if you're watching the show, Turk be messing up a lot of them. Yeah, all the time. I think that's funny that she says,
Starting point is 00:20:57 I kind of saw it coming. On a trip, Deshanna. Right. I just love it when Deshanna catches little strays. Like, oh, damn, sorry. Well, you consistently, shots, shots are fired consistently with your character towards my character. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:21:14 I can just imagine her in the hallway, like watching everything being like, noted. She really, she's not very intimidated by Turk. Like, she respects him as a surgeon and as a brilliant doctor. But she doesn't seem really intimidated by him at all. She's constantly, maybe that's a generational thing, but she's just like shooting her shooting shots. 100%.
Starting point is 00:21:33 I think she knows her confidence. She knows exactly what she's capable of. She knows what he's capable of. And I feel like Deshanna can see that and was like, hey, these are all similarities. Yeah. But that's a fun foil for Turk because she's matching his cockiness. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:21:47 Yeah. Which is the exact opposite of Amara who let, I mean, still to this point, even after the choke and everything like that and thrown against the wall in the fantasy and her standing up for herself with Hooch and everything like that, she still allows Deshanna to almost bully her in a lot of ways.
Starting point is 00:22:09 Yeah, she's still not all the way there yet. Yeah, even with explaining it to the patient who later on Mr. Whistler, yeah. Even explaining it to him, she's like, you know, what I do is I just pretty much bury my head in the sand. Yeah. And I allow her to do whatever she wants,
Starting point is 00:22:27 but I'm not going to do that to you. Yep. What I'm going to do is I'm going to get you some earplugs. Yeah, because you have a heart thing. I like that. Yeah. But you shouldn't do that because you have a heart thing. Right.
Starting point is 00:22:34 Yeah. I want to say something funny about kicking that old man in the trunk. I didn't know. Oh, that was such. I didn't know as a stunt man, first of all. No, I wasn't kicking him at first. We were just doing like closing the door and trying to get the trunk down. And then Trevor, who's our amazing stunt coordinator, came in a meeting.
Starting point is 00:22:53 He's like, you know, you can be rougher. He's a stuntman. And I said to him, oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know your stuntman. I go, do you mind if we do a bit where I'm trying to kick your shoulder a bit? He goes, go nuts. I was like, are you sure? He's like, yes, it'll be so funny. So I just started like Goodfellas in there.
Starting point is 00:23:07 Oh, my God. That's hell of funny. Let it happen. Wasn't that funny? That was hilarious. We were cracking up on the day. And in my head, I'm like, this isn't going to make it. This is just too crazy.
Starting point is 00:23:18 And then it cuts to the Scorsesey Goodfellas shot. Yeah, then I gave him the full Goodfellas. Yeah. And then even the trunk closing on his head? That had happened. How did you guys do that? Did they put a cameraman in the trunk for that? The seats folded down.
Starting point is 00:23:29 So, yeah, the cameraman wasn't locked in the trunk. It was one of those seats folded down situations. But yeah, that was well done. Pride is like love. Starting point is 00:24:38 what they fear, and where they think this is all headed. Silicon Valley is always saying the cliche thing about the way to predict the future is to create it. Well, yeah, it's up to us. But when you say us, who's us? 400 people that you know in Silicon Valley? Is it me down here in New Orleans? They're brilliant, controversial, and they're already shaping the future. The question is, whose imagination do we want to live in?
Starting point is 00:25:07 This is going to determine the fate of nations and economies and the future of humanity. Listen to the builders on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Vampires, minotars, 12-foot skeletons, and apartment doors? Believe it or not, we're talking about romance. It's a monster romance extravaganza on Radio 831, a romance podcast. So join me, Sanjana Basker, and my co-host Tyler McCall as we dive into the strange, horny, and wonderfully thoughtful world of falling for something not quite human. I give Tyler a crash course in monster romance, and the villain edit author Rosie Dannen joins to talk vampires, blood play, and finding tenderness in a monstrous love interest. Then, sentient object romance expert Racy Delgado takes us even. even deeper into the genre.
Starting point is 00:25:59 Finally, I assigned Tyler some homework to read Ciennes Costas Morning Glory Mielking Farm. And it's a doozy, but spoiler alert, Tyler emerges ready for more monster tales. Because sometimes non-human romances can tell us the most about our desire, our fantasies, and what we actually want. Listen to Radio 831, a romance podcast on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. From Pushkin Industries, I'm Jonathan Goldstein.
Starting point is 00:26:25 and this season on heavyweight. Jade questions the confession her grandmother made just before she died. She said she is the Mrs. Jones in the famous song Me and Mrs. Jones. And Dan wants to know how he was hired by a professional baseball team when it was so obvious he lied his way in.
Starting point is 00:26:45 I came up with fake batting averages. I said I hit 401, 415, and 310. That's really good. But I didn't do that. I made it up. This season, We risk life and limb to get answers. It seems like maybe we should have brought hazmat suits. Answers to life's biggest questions.
Starting point is 00:27:04 Sorry, are you eating something? Yeah. What are you eating? What difference doesn't know. All the difference in the world. Sorry, are you eating something? Listen to heavyweight on the I-heart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:27:23 This Halloween, join me, Tim Harford, cautionary tales journeys into the paranormal. We'll travel from 1800s America, where vampires preyed upon a terrified community, to a bizarre 1930s radio experiment which broadcast telepathic messages, and on to 1970s England, where intricate crop circles emerged overnight.
Starting point is 00:27:52 Throughout October, I'll be examining strange stories of the supernatural and asking, what can we learn from them today? Listen to cautionary tales on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Let's get to, yeah, so Sean and Charlie are hanging out in admissions. She shakes her shoulders. Did you notice she shakes her shoulders to the goodunk-gunk of the film song? Yes, and this was different from the original. Like, I don't know if you noticed Joelle, but I watched this thing over and over again.
Starting point is 00:28:31 Donald has been granted access to early cuts now, Joel. And I don't know if it's good or bad. This was a mistake. Now he has to compare earlier cuts to the final cut. No, and that's not what the mistake is. The mistake is that I'm watching every episode like four or five times. Why is that bad? That's good for the podcast.
Starting point is 00:28:47 It's not good for you, though, because you know what's going to come from me. Well, no, you don't seem to object with what we settled in on as the locked cut ever. No, never. But I come to you in the middle of freaking the director's cut and I'll be like, yo, I got notes. Yeah, well, that's understandable. director's cut is always very long and has jokes that didn't work. And each cut, we whittled down, we whittle down. We have to get these shows to 21 minutes and 30 seconds, which is super tricky.
Starting point is 00:29:11 And inevitably funny stuff gets gone. You know, the dance sequence that we did season one, one of our... Brisket. Oh, yeah. One of our camera operators came up to me, Brooke. And James, I want you to remind me to get this to Brooke because she came out to me, it was so sweet and earnest. And she's like, do you think I could see the dance scene? sequence about the brisket.
Starting point is 00:29:31 She goes, it was cut, and I thought it was so funny, and I'd love to see it. And I was like, I'll get you the sequence, Brooke. I felt so bad because, you know, obviously our crew works so hard on things and inevitably stuff gets cut. But we're trying to stop. We're trying to put some more of that stuff on Instagram. That's the other mistake for you giving me the freaking rights to look at all of this stuff, man, because when things get cut, I do get disappointed sometimes also.
Starting point is 00:29:57 I mean, too. That was a big one, too. That was like a whole day of... That was a lot of folks in there. Dancing and singing. Yeah. It was. And sweating.
Starting point is 00:30:05 Yeah. Yeah. It just comes down to, you know, you have to make tough choices. For sure. You know? Well, I hope, I don't want to... I'm not going to give it away, but we do something really epic in episode. That's not going to get cut.
Starting point is 00:30:19 Shut up. I know what you're talking about. That cannot cut cut. That's not going to get cut. All right. Let's talk about my Cox impression. Not bad at all. You actually sounded like a couple times.
Starting point is 00:30:31 Well, you know what I did. I got to tell you my cheat code. I called Johnny and said, would you lay this down for me? I want to make sure I do you justice. Right on. So he sent me audio on my phone three different takes of it because he's amazing and I love him.
Starting point is 00:30:48 Not bad. And so I summoned my inner Johnny being inspired by those audio recordings. Not. Not bad. Not bad. I did get very well. Thank you. I couldn't do the whistle.
Starting point is 00:30:59 The whistle is Johnny. We stole that from another episode. That's pretty close. Yeah, but he can do like one of these guys. He's his power to it. But he doesn't even put his hand in his mouth. Yeah. Yeah, he's a very good whistler that man.
Starting point is 00:31:16 He's a whistler. Asher's first night alone. Let's get to that storyline. I love this story. I thought, I really thought that Jacob and Ava are so sweet in this storyline. Yes. Yeah. And, you know, we learn, obviously we're going to learn what happens in the end, but I, Penny, no story during the podcast.
Starting point is 00:31:36 She's having dreams down there. Yeah, she's dreaming about Ashton Tog. Okay, and then we, of course, learn the main story point of the night that Turk is excited for his big steak night. And talk about how this was inspired by the writers in their life. So I was trying to ball out in front of the writers like, yo, I'm an executive producer. A scene was here. It seems the show run at a show, and she had a bunch of writers in town with her,
Starting point is 00:32:05 and to celebrate, I was like, I'm going to take y'all out to steak. Now, this is after Zach has taken everybody out to dinner several times. Every Saturday night, we do a dinner. We're going to do one tonight. We do a cast bonding dinner at a nice restaurant. But Donald decided I couldn't go out. It was a school night.
Starting point is 00:32:20 I don't go on a school night. And Donald was going to take all the writers out. Yes, and I did that. And, you know, a couple other people showed. and it was a fun night and we were, you know, we got inebriated. But the thing was, I didn't realize that they were going to, I didn't know that they were going to order such expensive cuts. Right, right, right.
Starting point is 00:32:44 When this student gets out there and he's like, get whatever you want, get whatever you want, so they take him up on it. No, but when the motherfucker says, get whatever you want, get whatever you want, that should be code for, don't get whatever you want. In a black household, that's code for it. Right, you know. Be mindful. This ain't know it's mine.
Starting point is 00:33:04 But this ain't no freaking, you know. Anyway. These dudes ordered like A5 Wagoo. No, that was. Wait, hold on. This is a culmination of two nights. Well, just combine them. But the first night, we went crazy and we had a great time.
Starting point is 00:33:18 And my business manager was like, it's not a problem. Don't worry about it. I love that your business manager, be like, that dinner was a problem. Right. That would have been nuts, right? But my business manager was like, it's cool, don't trip. So now I'm like, all right, we're going to do it again. And this time, Zach can go.
Starting point is 00:33:36 And I would tell you something right now after. That one was a little bit of, there was a little bit of like anger behind. There was a little bit of resentment that I paid for every dinner. I went a little crazy. Yes. And so. I did get the A5. I did, I did order an expensive ass bottle of wine.
Starting point is 00:33:56 Because I was so pissed. that Donald was complaining about picking up one check. So I was like, you know what? Donald, do you picking up again? I will be attending this time. Yes, and this time. So anyway, they bring out a decanter. And he's like, Donald's like, what the hell, why did you order that needs a decanter?
Starting point is 00:34:13 Oh, yeah. And I did look, I did clock that check. That check was crazy. That check was not a joke. But you're going to be fun. Yeah. All right. So we wanted to put some of that fun stories.
Starting point is 00:34:23 Donald does love steak. He does love looking at the meatboard when they. And there was an actual golden steak. at that point too. But that was it display or was it gold? There was gold on it? No, it was a display.
Starting point is 00:34:32 Oh, okay. So that came from the real life that there was a display steak and I was like, we eat in that shit tonight. I think that was. It was a night too and everyone was banging on the gym.
Starting point is 00:34:41 You remember that? Yes. That was a rowdy night in black and blue. We should give a shout-outs of black and blue. It's our favorite steakhouse here in Vancouver.
Starting point is 00:34:49 If you ever in town, it's where we go to a lot of steak nights. Yes. It's our go-to Vancouver steak-in-in-fact. In fact, so much so that Donald has befriended one of the waiters, and he came and played a waiter.
Starting point is 00:35:02 Yeah, he did background work. Background work in the steak night. Yes. And every time I go to black and blue now, they always lace me with a nice little area, and I get to eat good steak. So shout out black and blue. All right. I laughed when, so J.D. and Elliot are fighting over if they can bring their significant others.
Starting point is 00:35:26 and J.D. says, let me, I need some place to put my love. Let me park it in her, turk. Yes. Let me be parked in her. Did you guys write that down? Did you guys write that down? Yeah, I was like, let me park it in her.
Starting point is 00:35:43 That was not in the script. It's so tender. We were cracking up. We had each other rolling. Let me park it in her church. At one point, it got real growling too. It got crazy. Let me park it in her.
Starting point is 00:35:56 That's so scary. I don't like that. No. Let's talk about Dubois's ghost story. Oh, my gosh. I loved that. And the hey girl? What is it?
Starting point is 00:36:06 Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Let's talk about Michael James Scott. Yeah, let's talk about Michael. So that was a really funny monologue, and Michael nailed it. And I was worried at the time, in the spirit of 21 minutes and 30 seconds, we're able to keep this whole thing. But I got to tell you, when we got to the edit room, we were like, we can't cut this.
Starting point is 00:36:23 It's so funny. And he crushed it. Not just that, but also Jacob's turn on it also is really dope, too, on how he's like, I'm from London, man. Ghosts don't scare me. I tackle. Come on. And it pays off in the end where he finds his comfort, he feels at home in the insid ghost room. Yeah, that's very sweet.
Starting point is 00:36:43 I didn't even think of that. This is so good because you've watched these episodes so many times. You're seeing all these insights. Bro. I'm really proud of you. You've really leveled up your podcast game. Thank you. Joelle, you see how I do?
Starting point is 00:36:54 Well, you see how we level up? I do see. I too feel pride. This is great. We got a fancy set and now Donald like does fucking like watches the episode five times and sees little insights. Well, it's like a real return on investment here. Listen, I'm going to tell you something. It's a real investment.
Starting point is 00:37:13 And look, Joelle, he has a no pad and he brought today. Don't show that. How do you feel about it, Donald? Are you feeling the pride as well? Yeah, he should. Look, this is really ridiculous that you guys are doing this. not that big of a deal. Oh, it is.
Starting point is 00:37:26 I'm proud of you. You're dialed this. Was that bad? Well, you were in a dark room on the floor. In the beginning, you were in your closet. Yeah. You were mega baked. Who says I'm not mega baked now, well?
Starting point is 00:37:39 Oh, here we go. Hold on. Who says, I'm not mega baked now. Okay. Yeah. Wow. Did you not know we have sound effects? That's a bong.
Starting point is 00:37:47 I don't smoke from a bong anymore. You don't? Well, not up in Vancouver. This is Donald's wife's how she feels about me. Zach, I love you. Zach, Zach, Zach. You know what's crazy is that the more I hear that, the more I can hear the love in her voice. I love you.
Starting point is 00:38:02 Yeah, Zach, I love you. Zach, I love you. Zach, I love you. So, okay, I want to give a shout out to our assistant editor Deepa because she's amazing. And she did something, she does a lot of clever things. And I don't know if you guys caught this, but when Dubois is talking about the haunted room, you hear the ding ding ding of the call. She says, every night that call bell rings.
Starting point is 00:38:28 And it's a little subtle thing, but while Dubois is talking in here, ding, ding. And like that, I love little elegant touches like that, and I cannot take credit for them. There are so many people who work on the show. But that's something that, like, our assistant editor, DEPA put in there. And I was like, oh, I love that. Okay, so. Should we talk about shooting that dinner scene all day? No, I want to talk about a couple of things.
Starting point is 00:38:50 Go ahead. I want to talk about the interns and what they're doing in the hospital. at night because at one point Asher says to Tosh, if you're asking if I can do it again, the answer's pretty much no. About sex, yeah. About sex. Are they doing it in the hospital? Did she come back so they could do it in the hospital?
Starting point is 00:39:07 No, I inferred that they had had sex once that day and he's saying, hey, I'm a one time a day kind of guy. By the way, I never thought it was going to last because it wasn't in the script that when she points to her groin and goes, he's tired. I never thought ABC was going to let that. on the air. It stayed. But they did. It's hilarious too. We occasionally get things like that on. And then also
Starting point is 00:39:29 he's tired. You guys aren't allowed to hook up in the house at all because... Well, she's not letting it. Absolutely not. Because it pays dividends, folks. It pays dividends later on. But when watching it, I was like, damn.
Starting point is 00:39:48 DeShada is just in full control of this relationship. She was a tight ship. Yeah, it's a tight ship. Tasha has a lot of rules. Deshauna got a lot going on in the house. Only benefit her. Right. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:40:01 Yeah. That's true. No, we're going to see, without spoilers, we're going to see how that evolves throughout the season. But I think they're really teeing up your dynamic in a great way. Oh, yeah. Because you're so alpha and, like, headstrong, and she's, you know, being bullied by you, essentially. She's like, I have a new boyfriend.
Starting point is 00:40:19 Like, can he ever come over? No. She's like, why can I have sex with him? Yeah. She moves out of her aunt's house. I can't ever have sex with him. Right. And then, well, it'll pay dividends.
Starting point is 00:40:27 Never mind. I'll let it go. So we shot at this steakhouse all day long because there's so many scenes and there's so much coverage you have to shoot of all of us around that table that we, I've never done this in my whole career for an entire day. All of us sat around that table and shot all day long. I like days like that, though. I like days where you spend a whole even. day shooting pretty much three or four scenes and they take the time to work it because then it really feels like you get everything out that you want to get out so what you guys are seeing on film we block
Starting point is 00:41:05 shot that and so there were several we'll explain that what that means okay so block shooting is when you have a you look at your schedule and you're like wow we have so many shots that we need to do it would be great if we just do all of our shots facing this way first and then you're then we'll turn around and shoot the remaining shots the opposite way. Through multiple scenes. Through multiple scenes. And then if we need to, we'll get a couple of angles here and there and stuff like that. But for the most part, we're going to start this way for one half of the day and then we're
Starting point is 00:41:37 going to turn it around the other half. And so that's what we did that day. But in doing that, you get to work each scene until you get it because once they turn around, they turn around and there's no, okay, I'm going to, I'll be right back. I'm going to work out this other thing. So you come in and you've got a great idea of what you want to do and then you get to do it until you feel really satisfied about it. And that's what's great about.
Starting point is 00:42:04 I love days like that. And you're getting everything from everybody else because now they're in their mind, depending on which way you start, in their mind they're like, all right, when it gets to that part, I'm going to do this. And when it gets to this part, I'm going to do that. And that makes it so much fucking,
Starting point is 00:42:19 it makes it exciting for the scene because you know when it's all, said and done, you're going to have a great scene. And so it's really important that the person that starts off the block shooting starts off with a bang. And I'd like to say I started off the block shooting that day. We started with Donald and you brought it and you were very funny. Just put it out there.
Starting point is 00:42:36 Yeah, you did a good job. Dancing on a bum knee. Did you hurt your knee with your dancing? Do you remember James Brown? No. You don't remember James Brown, but what's the context? I did the splits. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:49 Did you hurt your knee? I did. It was swollen for weeks. Oh, my God. You hurt your knee doing great. For weeks, ask Wayne. It's on the books. Okay.
Starting point is 00:42:57 There you go, everyone. He's getting injured. You see what I do for y'all? He's trying to, he's getting injured, making me all laugh. It was really impressive. Thank you very much. You were there that day. I was.
Starting point is 00:43:06 That was amazing. You were impressive that day as well. J.D. is so desperate for Charlie to like him. I mean, that's what's funny is how, how needy, to me is funny. How needy he's being. He's like, are you having a good time? Dude, he kisses her shoulder. Kisses her shoulder.
Starting point is 00:43:20 You're having a good time. And then he's, and then he's, He starts noticing that she's kind of checked out, and that's when he asked Turk to go full party boy. This is a real person that you've experienced before. What do you mean? You've seen me at restaurants like this before. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:43:33 Donald definitely gets loud when he's got a few in him, and he can definitely go full party boy. And I try to get the table. I try to get everybody involved. Yeah, he tries to get the party going. Joel, have you ever seen Full Party Boy? No, Joelle hasn't witnessed it. I have not witnessed it yet, unfortunately.
Starting point is 00:43:49 Unfortunately. Would you like to witness Full Party Boy? We need to go out and eat. Are you buying? Yeah, of course. Come on. Let's do it. Just don't order Wagu A5, right?
Starting point is 00:43:57 Let's talk about Sarah licking her olives. Now, she used to have three olives. And I believe it was Donald who said to her, it would be funnier if it was just two olives because it'll look like balls. Yes. And Sarah agreed that that was funnier. Yes. And so she started tonging those olives. She tongued the shit out of those olives.
Starting point is 00:44:15 Oh, my word. I know I'm not alone in this situation. No, I got to tell you, everyone at the table. from Rachel to Foley to Donald to me was like, wow. Okay. We're seeing a skill set we didn't know Sarah had. Oh, my God. Okay, but can we talk about how hot Sarah looked?
Starting point is 00:44:37 She looks very sexy. She looks very hot. She looks very hot. And she was... We've all been on the boat. We all know what Sarah's working with. She's gorgeous. She's got it going on.
Starting point is 00:44:47 Sarah is so hot. And it was successfully sexual when she tongued the olives. It was very, yes, it was uncomfortable and arousing at the same time. Yes. Because it was like, oh, my God, that's my sister. Oh, my God, she's tonguing the crap out of some olives. Yes. There you go.
Starting point is 00:45:11 Tannins and champagne, we thought it would be funny if we made that up on the day. We had to look up if champagne, what the tannins were in champagne. We learned that there were none. We thought of funny if Foley corrected JD and says there are no tannins. Yeah. We should talk about Foley also and how great he is. And also Rachel and how great she is. They only had two episodes this season and both of them.
Starting point is 00:45:40 Well, Foley only had two episodes this season and he crushed both of them. He was just so amazing. He fits in so well with the comedy style. I really wish they were around longer. It's just we have so many characters. on the show. Mm-hmm. And obviously,
Starting point is 00:45:55 they're availability. They're both busy actors. But I, I loved the episodes. That they both were. Yeah. And when this was over, obviously, at the end,
Starting point is 00:46:05 when they're hooking up, it's like, it's hilarious, but I'm like, oh, we're going to have to find a clever way for them both to come back because I so love having them around. Yeah, absolutely. Dubois' bitchiness
Starting point is 00:46:17 starts around 10 p.m. We learn. The bald strays are so, funny catching so obsessed with why does he think Tosh is going to go bald? She has the most beautiful
Starting point is 00:46:28 25 year old hair. That's what's so funny like full head hair. Yeah, do you think he's jealous of her young person hair? Absolutely. But it's just so funny to just be like you got some ants that are going bald because you look like you're going bald. Well, she warns him like, hey,
Starting point is 00:46:44 just you know, Ashur. Around 10 p.m. DeBargo's crazy bitch. He goes full bitchy. and I came in to catch strays for you. And right on the clock, he comes in and is like, do you have ants that are going bald?
Starting point is 00:47:00 Because you look like you're going bald. And all of his shots fired are about baldness. Yes, because he's jealous, because he's bald. And when he tells a story about, who is it? Gerald. Oh, this part? Oh, my God. Gerald.
Starting point is 00:47:17 He starts catching me with Gerald? Yeah, Marcus. No, Marcus. Marcus? Marcus, Gerald, Marcus catching me with Gerald. That shit was hilarious. You shouldn't stress. That's going to happen to you.
Starting point is 00:47:28 Because you're going bald. No, that was funny when he goes, when Heath did that throwaway, walk away, that's why you're going bald. Wishing baldness on others. The delivery. That shit was so funny. I love me to see Michael. Every time. First of all, I laugh every time no matter what he says. Every time.
Starting point is 00:47:45 But when Heath did that throw away, turn away, that's why you're going bald. That's why you're going bald. It remind me, here, take those bananas. Yeah, it was like, here, take those bananas. For those of you who don't know, Beverly Hills, Cod. Hello? The soundtrack to your October. From spooky podcasts and chilling playlists to non-stop Halloween radio and more.
Starting point is 00:48:23 We have all the thrills and chills you're craving this season. Press play. This Halloween, join me, Tim Harford, as cautionary tales journeys into the paranormal. We'll travel from 1800s America, where vampires preyed upon a terrified community.
Starting point is 00:52:02 To a bizarre 1930s radio experiment, which broadcast telepathic messages, And on to 1970s England, where intricate crop circles emerged overnight. Throughout October, I'll be examining strange stories of the supernatural and asking, what can we learn from them today? Listen to cautionary tales on the I-Heart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Yeah, I was laughing when Rachel goes, golden steak! Golden steak!
Starting point is 00:52:44 Okay, so. It's always frozen in the pediatrics ward. Sorry, go ahead. That was also something that's crazy. So we should go back and talk about what's happening in the hospital. Yes. Get us on story. So at some point, Asher misses a couple of things,
Starting point is 00:53:02 and it makes it so that Mr. Whistler, who Mara has become very fond of, has to be attended to by DeShana. Yeah, she hands her off because she has an emergency related to Asher's patient. Right. And in that time, Mr. Whistler, unfortunately. Is it Wurzell? It's, I think it's Wittsell. Wittzel.
Starting point is 00:53:25 Wittzel. Thank you. Mr. Wittsell somehow. Mr. Wittzel, hey. Somehow he dies. Yeah. I want to say that that scene where Tosh helps Asher with the guy who has necrotizing fasciitis on his leg. I get goosebumps every time. Because. Because I think I really love what the
Starting point is 00:53:53 writers are doing with this story of Tosh, even though she's silly and she's goofy, she's actually a really great doctor. And I love later when Asher admits you're great at this. And I love, we're going to learn that she's coming in. She's lying. She came in solely to truly look after him. But when she catches that mistake, the guy could lose his leg. And she's like, no, no, there's no time, Asher. You got to, we got to pay, he goes, I'll page Amara right away. Like, her actually catching something. I just thought that scene was really well acted and really well directed. And I thought it was, I don't know, all I can tell you is I've seen it a zillion times and I get goosebumps every time. Well, I love all of it because it transferred, the energy
Starting point is 00:54:39 transfers, you know, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, into Deshaana. DeShana's like, I got you. And even though they're beef and there's still that sisterhood, don't worry about it, I got you. And she runs to handle an Asher's patient
Starting point is 00:54:54 and then we cut back to Steak Night and somebody's dead, you know what I mean? And as an audience member, like, so for as an audience member, I really do, as you said, you were like, it's very, you know, you like the energy in that. I really love the energy in that thing
Starting point is 00:55:10 because it just gets better. Like, I was talking about how it ran, So now this is where the ramp really happens. Like everything's starting to happen. And then boom, it all comes crashing down with someone dying and you automatically think that it is... You don't know that it's Mr. Wurzl. Wittzel.
Starting point is 00:55:29 However missed, yeah. Right. I mean, there is a mislead there, right? You think that it's going to be the guy that just got... I mean, I assume when I read it, that it's the patient that Asher may have fucked up. But then it turns out it's the patient that she hands it off, and which is the cause of the beef
Starting point is 00:55:45 that's happening in Turk's office. Right. Let's get to that scene. So this is my favorite scene of the episode. Yeah, this scene is great. This scene is so good. You guys are so funny together. Together you got, by yourselves too,
Starting point is 00:55:55 but together you guys are like freaking the Wonder twins. I fucking get you guys. They probably don't know what that is. It's the freaking superheroes. Yeah. But I get, I get a, I get you guys mixed up a lot. Yeah. You can see Amara, Amard.
Starting point is 00:56:10 Yeah. And during this, I'm sitting here and I'm having to think about it. You know what I mean? Not only do I get you guys mixed up as characters, I sometimes get you guys mixed up as people, too. And that's just a testament because you guys bounce off of each other so well.
Starting point is 00:56:23 And this scene shows it. It's like it highlights. This is the highlight. Like when I watched this scene, I got to play with so much because of what you guys were doing. I remember I studied real hard for the, you know, I studied hard for the scene because I knew it was an important scene, right? And so when I came in, I was like,
Starting point is 00:56:40 I'm about to freaking show these. young whippersnappers what it is. And then you guys were already on point. And I was like, oh, shit. But that just goes to show you when you guys, this is like the most simple lesson, when all three actors know their shit as well as you guys do. And people listen to the podcast.
Starting point is 00:57:00 We've talked about how fast we have to shoot this show. So if people don't know their shit that well and you're kind of struggling to get it, half the time is wasted just getting it. You three came into that scene, knowing your shit so well, ready to go. And so you start at a fucking B plus. Right.
Starting point is 00:57:16 And then it jumps to A plus. Then you get warmed up and then it jumps to like an A plus. And that's how you get such a great. It's multiple scenes actually. But that's how those multiple scenes in that room with y'all are so good. You guys getting heated. I laugh every time with the Uber driver, Karim understands you. Or when Deshauna's like, yeah, that's exactly what I did.
Starting point is 00:57:37 I said, yeah, do you. Do you? Your delivery on that is so far. Yeah, I said, do you. Right. It's, this is my favorite scene of like, and now at this point, it's like, how can I, I want to recapture what we did every time we do it. So you and I had a scene recently and I was like, how do I get there? I studied, I studied, I studied, and we worked it out and we got there.
Starting point is 00:58:03 You guys will get there when the episodes get there. But every scene is like that now, for me at least, you know, and sometimes I know my, my line's really good and sometimes I don't. That's just, you know, my brain. No, but me and Amanda were talking about it the other day about how much of a generous performer you are. Truly. On both sides of the camera.
Starting point is 00:58:22 When you're off camera, you're giving so much to where we get the best takes because of what you're giving us off camera. Right on. And we feel so lucky to act opposite you all the time. Thank you for saying that. Well, continue that in the rest of your career. For sure.
Starting point is 00:58:35 Because you will find there's people that phone that shit in when they're off camera and I don't know. I don't play like that. No, you guys don't. It makes such a difference, though. It really does. Of course it does. And in fact, you'll find there's times when you're off camera, you can be more helpful
Starting point is 00:58:48 by improving shit that isn't even in the script to help the person get there. If the directors just told them, I need you to be more upset, I need you to be more. Obviously, you work it out with the actors so they're not surprised by it, but you can help them sometimes by coming in hotter than you even did on your coverage because it will help them address the director's note. Well, here's a perfect example of that. At one point in the scene, I say to you guys, we're doing the scene and I go, have you seen what Carla looks like with humidity? And you guys both nod.
Starting point is 00:59:21 And I go, no, there's no way you could have seen that. There's no way. That's all off camera because I said it off camera to you guys. And then the head shake this way becomes... That was funny. You know what I mean? But this is all us improvving and, you know what I mean, and playing around.
Starting point is 00:59:34 So my favorite scene of this episode. Really good scene. And this episode has several really great. scenes. All right. So Turk made a pact with JD, a la la the notebook. Turk didn't know it's from the notebook. No.
Starting point is 00:59:51 That was funny. Or maybe he did and just got caught. Is it? I have a confession to make. What's up? You've never seen a notebook. I've never seen the notebook. No way.
Starting point is 01:00:02 Oh, Zach, what? I feel like you would love the notes. You would love the notebook. It's like, that's top sensey. You're sensi. I love romance. You love romance. I'm a sensie.
Starting point is 01:00:13 I love those actors. Look, I'm clutching my pearls as we talk about. You're not going to love it. Zach, if you love La La Land. I do love La Land as you know. You're going to love the notebook. Is it like La La Land without music? Okay.
Starting point is 01:00:25 Heartbreaking. I know, I know the promise. Yeah, absolutely. Don't ruin what I already know. Here's the thing. La La La Land is my favorite, one of my favorite movies of all time. Yeah. So I cannot sit here and say that it is comparable.
Starting point is 01:00:40 But I can say, when I first saw this movie, I was like, oh, my boy is out of here. It's excellent. Oh, she is out of here. Like, everybody in this thing crushes. All right. So good. It's so funny. It's one of those movies.
Starting point is 01:00:54 We all have movies in our lives where when they come up, you're like almost embarrassed to say I've never seen it. Yo, dude, I was hanging out with homie when he was when, right when, right when he was making that shit. I know controversy on that stuff. Right. Well, we don't need to get into people's business. Not gonna, but right watching that, we're not gonna do that, but right watching that shit. It was like, wow, this is, this is what, this is amazing, like all of them, Nick Casavetti. I used to play ball with him.
Starting point is 01:01:21 I couldn't believe he was that great of a director. I didn't know that, you know what I mean? Like, there's so many things. All right, I'll watch it. Yeah, man, it's really dope. I'm so excited for you. I'll watch it. Maybe we'll watch it together.
Starting point is 01:01:30 Okay. I really love the scene, a very, another great scene in this episode with Taj and Asher in the haunted room. I thought that's such a sweet scene. I laugh out loud with the harmonizing for beginners. Oh, yeah. And then that was Ava's idea, because we don't know that fucking lingo. Did we just low-key eat that down?
Starting point is 01:01:52 I don't know what that. I mean, I guess eat it all the way to the... Like you ate that up. Like you smashed that, you crushed that. Basically, in our age, we'd be like, did we just crush that? Got it. Did we just eat that? Joelle, did you know the term low-key eat it down?
Starting point is 01:02:06 Yes. Joelle's very hip, guys. I got into his face. She said I'm in black queer space. Oh. Yeah. It's a black queer space thing. Got it.
Starting point is 01:02:16 Got it. Got it. Got it. Oh, Joelle clocked. Wow. Okay. She's like, that's a lot. Too much.
Starting point is 01:02:25 Well, I thought that was sweet, sweet and funny. And for mega Scrubs fans, again, shouting out Roger Fires and the art department, they made that room the old style from the old hospital. If you look at the way the gear, the medical gear is on the wall, we used to have those plastic panels that were behind the beds in the old school hospital before we modernized to 2026 hospital. So Roger totally recreated the early 2000s look of a hospital room and just did an awesome job with that haunted room.
Starting point is 01:03:00 I really liked, I know we pushed them both together, the two scenes that we did in the office, But in between that, we skip over a couple of things. Go ahead. Go ahead, girl. There's a line in this whole show that talks about the bonds that you can form when in a workspace. You know what I mean? And sometimes they don't last that long, but they can last if certain things are in place.
Starting point is 01:03:30 And the one thing that was in place for DeShana and Amara was the fruit cups. You know what I mean? and that is their bond. They're so broke, just like it was Turk and JD's. They're so broke and have figured out a loophole that they could steal food from the cafeteria, and they do it. And even when they're out at night or...
Starting point is 01:03:55 And even when Turk walks by, he realizes, oh, this is something more than that. These guys are roommates, and they're kind of, you know, partners in this because, you know, in his eyes, I got to watch both of them. And if they're fighting and stuff like that, this is gonna be, one, a pain in the ass, but two, I see myself and JD in these two.
Starting point is 01:04:18 Yeah, he sees the pep talk that he's due to give. Right. He's like, wait, I can't just walk out with these women. I gotta tell them something they need to know. Exactly. And he steps back into it, and I just love that scene also. This is another great scene. And we said it already with the whole notebook shit,
Starting point is 01:04:35 but it's another great scene. But anyway, the bonds that we form can last forever, and you say it in the thing, but it takes a lot of luck. There's a lot of luck that needs to be in it. And we see a lucky moment when he walks by the fruit cups early on before you say that. You know what I mean? It's fucking phenomenal. It's really good storytelling and piecing things together.
Starting point is 01:04:59 Yes, I agree. And then we build to J.D. and Elliott walking down the hall. I laughed at scurrying down the pet stairs like this when I was sleeping at the edge of your bed. And J.D., I think, thought that those were for him, the pet stairs at you and Carla's bed. He didn't realize that they were. I don't think he knows they're for the dog.
Starting point is 01:05:24 Oh, I don't think I realize that they were for the dog either. I didn't know we had a dog. Well, listen, he says, I slept at the foot of Turk and Carla's bed, and it was so nice. They had this little furry staircase that I could just crawl down and when I went to pee
Starting point is 01:05:39 and then crawl back up when I was done. But I thought she put that there for you. No, have you ever seen these pets? Oh, you haven't seen this. Have you guys seen this? Oh, so for people that have pets that can't jump onto a bed, they have these little furry like staircases
Starting point is 01:05:51 they put next to their bed. And that's what it. J.D. took that down. He thought it was for him. I can't even ever seen that. I'll show you a picture of one. I thought a bit of it. that's something completely different.
Starting point is 01:06:04 What did you think it was? I don't want to talk about it on the podcast because you're going to make Joel cut it. Oh, okay. Okay. I'm dying to know off mic what it was. All right, so they hook up. This was really funny.
Starting point is 01:06:17 This was always our plan, was to back into them making out, and they've gotten drunk off the bottle of wine and they're macad in the hallway. Charlie and Sean. Charlie and Sean. And just camera-wise, we had to figure out
Starting point is 01:06:30 how to have the depth of field right to be able to have them so far away and still in focus. So we cranked the lighting in there and we cranked the ISO on the camera for those you were into cameras. So we could have that much up the field because the joke doesn't really work if you're not simultaneously seeing both J.D. and Elliott
Starting point is 01:06:49 in the foreground and them in the background. So how does that work? Because this is a very interesting thing as somebody who likes to do stop motion and filming and depth of field stuff. turning up the light in the more light and turning down the aperture creates more depth. The more closed down the aperture is and the numbers go the opposite way. So when you say close down, you're going towards 11, 16, 22, that's the higher numbers.
Starting point is 01:07:18 The more depth of fields you're going to have. So on a bright, sunny day outside, if you want it, you can have an insane depth of field. Sometimes people don't want it and they put these things in front of the camera that are called NDs, which are kind of like sunglasses, basically, for the camera. so it'll allow you to open up wider so you can have shallow depth of field if you want it. In a case like this where the joke isn't going to be funny if they're out of focus deep in the foreground,
Starting point is 01:07:43 you're going to do two things. You're going to flood the hallway with a lot of light and then you can turn the sensitivity, the ISO of the camera up as well and that'll allow you to get to a stop on the camera where you have really longed up the field. Last question. without trying to board the audience.
Starting point is 01:08:03 But how does it stay in focus then if that's the case? You know what I mean? How does the foreground and the background? Because that's a matter of depth of field. Let's say I'm on an F-22, which is like the highest, the most closed down of the iris. You can have from two feet to infinity in focus.
Starting point is 01:08:22 Okay, I didn't know that. I'm not, I'm not... Well, I'm giving you knowledge. If you ever need to accomplish this in your stop motion, just come to me. I do. But for those of you be into production, this is the kind of things you gotta figure out.
Starting point is 01:08:34 This is the kind of thing you read the script and go, that's not gonna be funny unless they're both in focus. How are we gonna do that? And so it's something in pre-production you need to figure out with the DP and plan for it. I love the Tears for Fear song. Everybody wants to rule the world. And I really am so moved every time I see it
Starting point is 01:08:58 of the moment that Tosh confesses that she's been lying and she does that little check to make sure that Asher's not there and confesses to Dubois that he'll get there. Well, I also like Michael James Scott's reading of saying to her, look,
Starting point is 01:09:13 I know you made some mistakes in the past, but you know, you're turning out to be one of the best doctors in this hospital and I can't say the same for him. Yeah, and she's like, he'll get there. And you kind of know, nah. We don't know. Dun-d-da-da-da.
Starting point is 01:09:30 It's kind of like, that's the first tale of it. I really love us all. You know, the show always comes back to these three people we met 25 years ago who love each other, sitting in a booth at a bar. They've just had, two of them have just had something pretty devastating happen. But your friends can always make you laugh, right? Your friends can always sit around with you in a booth and say the right things and make you laugh. And I love that this show circles back in this episode
Starting point is 01:10:01 to three people who all got their own shit, but they're sitting there cracking each other up. I love that too. I also love that it's not so serious when it comes to early on in relationships, especially... Well, they weren't neither one of those things. Those things had both just started. It wasn't like they were like affairs.
Starting point is 01:10:21 Exactly, but they're taking it so hard at the end of the show. Well, J.D. had got a trip to the Bahamas. J.D. Non-refundable. I'm going to put it out there. This goes all the way back to episode one. When Turk warned, J.D., you do this shit too much. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:10:37 And it's got to come and bite you in the ass. That was an episode. Oh, that was first of this season. First of the season. And here it is, episode five. And then we get to end with two cute things. Both Sean's saying nobody cares, J.D. And then you talk.
Starting point is 01:10:51 Hey, guys, tell me how the fruit cups came about. That was Michael Spiller. Shoutout. He was our producing director of the show and he was on set and he, go ahead, he had this idea.
Starting point is 01:11:01 Yeah, he had this idea. We were sitting doing the scene. I think it was a different ending. I think it was just supposed to end with I love you. Yeah,
Starting point is 01:11:09 it was like, she says, I love you for the first time. And we were going to get wine and that was it. And then he somehow was like, it would be so cute if you pulled out the fruit cups and the props department
Starting point is 01:11:17 is incredible. Within like five minutes. Yeah, they brought the fruit cups somehow. That was so cute. You know what's funny is that she says we're going to order
Starting point is 01:11:25 the most expensive. bottle of wine on the menu. And I'm thinking of like this level of steakhouse. There's probably like a $25,000 bottle of wine on the menu. I don't think they're going to do that. I think this is what I think. She's just like, I'm going to order some expensive wine, but I don't know about the most. She literally says to the waiter.
Starting point is 01:11:45 I totally understand that, but she knows. You're saying the waiter is not going to bring them a 25K bottle of one. No, I'm saying she knows better. So you're saying after this, after the camera cuts, the waitress, the waitress is probably like, I don't think you want the most expensive. Do you want to look at the wine list? No, I'm saying DeShana's like, all right. No, we can't do that. It's not going to yell that.
Starting point is 01:12:10 That'll be my ass. Listen, we're going to order this. And at the end of the day with the food cups, it's beautiful. All right. Well, that's 205. Thank you, ladies, so much for joining us. I hope you had fun. So much fun.
