Starting point is 00:00:07 It's time to the Fantasy Points podcast brought to you by FantasyPoint.com. Top level fantasy football and NFL betting analysis from every perspective and angle, from numbers to the film room with a single goal to help you score more fantasy points. What is up, everyone? Welcome to the week one matchup podcast here at FantasyPoint.com. The 2021 season kicks off tomorrow night. We're recording this on Wednesday, September 8th, 730 Eastern, if you must know. I am John Hansen, FantasyPoints.com.
Starting point is 00:00:47 Greg CoSell is here, and what we'll do this year every Wednesday night, Greg's been in the film room, breaking it down. We'll give you a little sneak peek of some of the content that Greg brings to the table here. We're not covering all the games. We're just going to pick out a couple of choice select matchups and get Greg's thoughts. And we'll call it a day. We'll call it a podcast. And then every Thursday, me, Greg, and Adam Kaplan convene at FantasyPoint.com for our live stream where we do cover all the games. Maybe not every single matchup of note because it would be a nine hour podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:19 But that is a premium content for subscribers to the website. If you are not a subscriber to the website, I will be honest. One of the reasons we're doing this podcast is introduce you to the content. So you're into it. And if you are, you can use promo code 21 Hansen 10 on your subscription, save 10% Greg, are you ready for 30 minutes of NFL breakdowns here? It's time, Greg. Hello, how are you?
Starting point is 00:01:45 Let's do a good 30 minutes here, John. You know, give some people a taste. And obviously during the season, they'll get my notes and they'll see all that. So they'll see, you know, most every game. But let's do a good 30. I know you're doing the match-up show on ESPN again this year. And I was hoping to get, you know, exactly which games you're doing. but I feel like I have an idea, Greg, because there are a couple of marquey matchups here.
Starting point is 00:02:10 Obviously, we start with the Thursday Night Affair, Dallas at Tampa, and how important it just seems massive that the Dallas Cowboys, now we do record this on Wednesday night, it's not looking good for Zach Martin there at Guard. It's not a lock that he's out, but Greg, I would think that common sense, their best chance for Dallas, the best chance for Dallas, against that nasty defense is to establish Ezekiel Elliott. It's going to be that much harder. How critical do you think that injury is up front for Dallas? Well, it's critical. Many think he's the best guard in the league. We saw what happened in the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:02:51 Obviously, that was kind of a backup all line for the Chiefs. But, you know, I think that the Cowboys have talked a lot offseason about sort of reestablishing Zeke. We'll see if that happens in this game. I still think that the strength of their offense is their passing game. I think that Dak Prescott, assuming he's fine and I think he will be, I think his evolution over its four years in the league has been outstanding. He's a really good quarterback.
Starting point is 00:03:18 I think they've got three really strong receivers. You'll see them move around a lot more this year. A year ago, Gallup was the X, Cooper was the Z, and Lamb was the slot. I think you'll see them in multiple locations. So we'll see if they can protect. I personally think their defense is critical, and I think that's an unknown right now, because we don't know about their secondary. We don't know exactly how Dan Quinn is going to map it out.
Starting point is 00:03:44 But one thing we know about the Bucks, I watched a ton of Tom Brady this summer, is they line up in a lot of formations, tight formations, out of 12 personnel with two wide receivers just split wide, and they basically work matchups. Yeah. Because they've got Evans and Godwin, or Evans and Brown, or Brown and Godwin, they've got three wide receivers that can win one-on-one on the outside, and they play match-up football, and they just work the matchups.
Starting point is 00:04:12 And right now, the Cowboys Secondary is a little bit of an unknown. Do you think there's one matchup that stands out? I would think we'll see a decent amount of Trayvon. Who do you think is going to start for the Cowboys at Corner? Right. That's what I'm talking. Tampa Whiteouts against Dallas Corners. I would assume, I would think, that Mike Evans will see. see a fair amount of Diggs, Trayvon Diggs.
Starting point is 00:04:37 I'm looking at Antonio Brown against Anthony Brown, perhaps. Greg, has a good matchup. Yeah, I mean, I think that, look, even if you accept the fact that Diggs could do a good job on Evans, and that's not a given, whoever plays on the other side is going to have to deal with Godwin or Brown. And I think they're going to throw the ball on the perimeter really well. I mean, when I watched their tape a number of weeks ago from last year, I was kind of blown away because when you watch 200 dropbacks in a row,
Starting point is 00:05:06 I get a totally different feel, John, than I do during the season when I can't watch, you know, just 200 Brady dropbacks in a row. I mean, I was just amazed by how much they worked on the perimeter because I don't think most of us thought of Tom Brady as a guy who drives the ball outside the numbers. But they did an awful lot of that because they just have three great receivers.
Starting point is 00:05:25 They like their matchups. Yeah, and Bruce Ariens talking about Antonio Brown, like looks like the same guy from four to five years ago. I thought that myself, and you kind of agreed on the tape last year. Yeah. So, I mean, that to me is something I'm looking at in this game. What about Jordan Lewis? I think everybody's going to focus on the Zach Martin stuff.
Starting point is 00:05:45 But, I mean, I'm just looking at it. I think they're going to struggle to be able to cover those three receivers. I'm with you. I mean, Jordan Lewis, your thoughts on that player. It seems like he's an improving player. They did sign him. But he's more of a slot player. I mean, look, we know the bucks will still line up in 11 personnel.
Starting point is 00:06:02 Obviously, they're going to do that. but and Lewis will play in the slot. Yeah. What do you think of him as a player? He'll likely see a lot of Chris Gawain, and Gawain did post strong numbers down the stretch. Godwin practicing on Wednesday looks like he's going. He's off the injury report.
Starting point is 00:06:19 Yeah, I mean, Godwin's a big physical guy. Lewis is a smaller guy. So again, I think Lewis is a good player. He's feisty. He's competitive. But I think Godwin is a physical mismatch overall. And of course, Dallas, we're still looking at the pass rush or lack thereof, right? Because DeMarcus Lawrence wasn't quite as ferocious last year.
Starting point is 00:06:38 That's another problem here against this offense. Yeah, I mean, if Brady's comfortable, it probably doesn't matter who's playing corner. He's going to find someone. So, you know, that to me is a major part of this game. I did want to flip it back very quickly before we move on. I mean, because, look, you mentioned that the strength of their offense, you know, is probably the passing game. at this point and they do have a tremendous trio. I know Todd Bowles is very difficult to prepare for. He does a variety of things, right?
Starting point is 00:07:12 So is there any one matchup that you think we'll see, you know, more often than not? I mean, it's a little confusing because I'm not even sure if C.D. Lamb is going to line up inside. Well, that's why, I mean, again, and it's a classic case of there's, you know, I know we're doing this, you know, now, but we don't know. Because I personally believe the cowboys are going to move people around. I do it much last year. I think they're going to do it this year.
Starting point is 00:07:37 So I can't sit here and say, oh, well, the matchup, I'm really excited to see is Carlton Davis against so-and-so, because I don't know if the Cowboys are going to play that way. Right, right. I'm going to be curious to see if they try Michael Gallup in the slot, Greg. That I don't know we've seen much else. I think you're going to see that. Yeah. Do you think he can, you know, be as effective as, you know, Amari Cooper?
Starting point is 00:07:57 Because Mark Cooper is very effective in that slot. I mean, we don't know the answer to that. but I think, you know, I think you could easily make the argument that C.D. Lamb is their most gifted receiver, and I think they're going to move him around this year. Let's move on to Philadelphia and Atlanta. This one is really intriguing. What are we looking for in Philadelphia? They play things close to the vest, but we certainly believe I do, that it'll be, looks like a tight end centric offense to me with Zach Ertz there. They're going to likely throw the ball to the running backs. And all of a sudden, Greg, they do. have a lot of weapons. I actually feel good about where they're at. We'll see how they execute
Starting point is 00:08:37 and perform, but what are your thoughts? Well, I think in this week, you're going to see two things because of who they're playing against, because Dean Pease is incredibly multiple with his looks. He's a very detailed blitzer. There's a lot of different pressure concepts. Dean Pease is a believer that any number of the 11 defenders could be part of a blitz package. So I think what the Eagles are going to do is they're going to play a lot at a 12. at times with two backs, and they're going to try to run the football, and they're going to try to keep the game together. Because the last thing they want is third and nines against Dean Pease,
Starting point is 00:09:14 because Jalen Hertz will not have seen some of the things that Dean Peas will show him. And I personally think that since every game does get to third and nine, I think this will be a game where you see Jalen Hertz run a lot. Do you think they have enough to put Jalen Hertz in the ideal position for him to be in at this point in his career? Do they have enough talent? I feel like they do. It is a new coaching staff and all that. I also look at the office of line, the health of that line, and I feel pretty good about that. Well, I think it's the one thing you can say about the Eagles, and I know a lot of people are down on them because Hertz isn't unknown, but it's always a good
Starting point is 00:09:52 starting point, John, on both sides of the ball when you've got a good O line and a really good D line. And that's a good starting point for a team. So I think the Eagles are really strong in those two areas. And I think they can build an offense that allows Hertz to play under control and have the past game be relatively defined. And then when it does, and they'll use the design quarterback run game, but when it does get to long yardage, Hertz's legs will be a factor. And I doubt they're going to tell him, don't run. I think that's going to be a part of how they see Hertz, particularly as he grows and develops into the position. Yeah, no doubt.
Starting point is 00:10:33 In terms of things being defined, I mean, who's the most important player there? I mean, I kind of look at Zach Ertz as being a nice little underneath guy, but of course, Devante Smith would be the guy that I would look at. Yeah, I could be dead wrong, okay? Because Atlanta obviously does not have a great defense in terms of personnel. Right. So I could be dead wrong in terms of what happens this week. But I don't think this week you're going to see high,
Starting point is 00:10:58 volume targets for wide receivers. You know, unless they're down, you know, 20 to 3 in the second quarter. But I don't think they're going to go into this game with the idea of Hertz dropping back 40 times by choice. Unless their quick game kind of throws, screens to backs, wide receiver screens,
Starting point is 00:11:15 they'll take a shot here and there. Every team does. But I don't think this is going to be a pass-heavy approach week one. Dean Pease has his work cut out for him with this roster. I mean. No question, but he's very, very good. He's been doing it a long time. How about on the other side of things, you know, since seemingly the beginning of time,
Starting point is 00:11:38 the Philadelphia Eagles have struggled against tight ends. We saw Tyler Higby score three touchdowns in a game against them last year. Your thoughts on their ability to handle Philly native Kyle Pitts? Well, you know what you're going to get from Arthur Smith. Arthur Smith plays with multiple tight ends. They play with a fullback. That's Arthur Smith. They've got a fallback on the roster.
Starting point is 00:12:01 They've got pitch. They've got hurts. They brought in Lee Smith, who's a blocking tight end. I mean, with Tennessee, there were snaps. They played with 13 personnel with three tight ends. That's what you're going to get from Arthur Smith, as long as the game is close. So, again, it's week one. It's impossible to sit here and say how it's going to map out in terms of target share,
Starting point is 00:12:23 but you're going to see multiple tight ends and you're going to see a fallback. I'm wondering, like, didn't they put Darius Slay on tight ends in the past? Well, that could happen if there's 13 personnel on the field. That won't happen if Calvin Ridley's on the field. Would you agree, though, that the strength of this defense probably remains that line in the room? Well, sure. That's a dominant line. That's a great line.
Starting point is 00:12:49 What about their linebacking corps? I think it's a little better than people think. You know, people can say what they want. Alex Singleton had a very good year last year. You watched tape of Alex Singleton. It wouldn't surprise me if he's in the top five in the NFL and total tackles this year, assuming he plays, you know, a whole season. Right.
Starting point is 00:13:06 Any prediction or expectation on how they handle Mr. Calvin Ridley this year? I mean, they brought in Slay to, you know, for all intents and purposes, you know, go man to man against the team's number one receiver. Yeah, Slay is going to match up to Raleigh. Riddley? I mean, why, again, we don't know, but why wouldn't he? You know, I don't think they're going to put Stephen Nelson on him. Well, you know, that's why Darius Slay is there. The other receiver on the outside is going to be Russell Gage. Now, he's a solid player, but you could argue Calvin Ridley, and that's all I'm telling you, based on tape study, you could argue Calvin Riddley's
Starting point is 00:13:47 the best route runner in the NFL. Maybe that seems like the matchup of the game for Atlanta offense, obviously, right? Greg, I mean, any thoughts on that's going to be a little bit of a battle here? Well, yeah, I mean, and they're going to throw the ball to Riddley. Matt Ryan's not going to shy away from throwing the ball to Riddley. I mean, Ridley, you know. Can Slay run with Ridley these day and Slay's 30? I mean, you're talking about just vertical speed? I mean, Ridley doesn't run a lot of just straight goes.
Starting point is 00:14:14 His game is built more on transition separation. Yeah, true, true, true. Matt Ryan, been under siege for years. where do you think the Eagle Pass rushes? I mean, everyone's getting older, but they're still pretty good. I would say that the Eagle Pass, I think their D-Lines really, really good. And I would expect a big year from Geron Hargrave. Sweets had a good year last year, from what I understand is, had a great camp.
Starting point is 00:14:43 That's clearly this, that's probably the strength of their team. Let's go to Arizona, Tennessee, Greg. A lot of people in the fantasy world expecting fireworks in this one. We shall see. we do know that the Cardinals are down, Malcolm Butler, and, you know, Dark West Deneard on IR. So talk about what you think about the matchup here for the Titans against this Arizona defense here. Maybe an opportunity for them to come out and showcase Julio Jones and A.J. Brown. Well, the big question is, you know, what Tennessee's approach will be.
Starting point is 00:15:20 Clearly, they've been Derek Henry Centric. Last year, he had more first down rushes by far than any back in the league. but Arizona at the corner position is is not strong. And I don't even know who's going to play the slot corner position for Arizona as we speak right now, John. So do they eschew the 21 personnel and the 12 personnel and go with more 11 personnel? I mean, you can still run Henry out of 11 personnel and see who plays in the slot for Arizona. Because I don't know the answer to that. Right.
Starting point is 00:15:52 Well, they've got Luck Barcoo, your boy, former Jeff. Jaguar. Yeah, he played last year in Jacksonville, but he played on the outside. Yeah, he's an outside guy, but he's there, which I actually didn't even remember, but now I see it. He drafted Marco Wilson from Florida in the fourth round. He's out of the same high school as Patrick Sertan and Tyson Campbell, American Heritage in Florida. All right. He was a first year freshman starter in the SEC. So I don't know. Is he the slot corner? I don't know the answer to that. What do you think of this front for the Arizona Cardinals? I think they're, well, I will say this. I think they're going to get pressure on the quarterback and rack up a lot of sacks. Well, what they did last year was they were high percentage blitz and high percentage man coverage.
Starting point is 00:16:36 We'll see if the man coverage stays because of who they have out there. So I don't know the answer to that. But I think how Tennessee chooses to play, I'm kind of fascinated by that. I mean, you're not expecting a seismic shift here. I mean, maybe a little bit more. Yeah. No, but you're trying to win this game. And they've known who they were playing since the schedule came out.
Starting point is 00:16:58 Well, Todd Downing was kind of Arthur Smith's right-hand man last year. Yeah, but he also grew up in the game with Scott Linnehan as his mentor, and Scott Linnehan was an 11th personnel coach. So that's why I don't know. Yeah, yeah. Well, they also don't have a ton of weapons here. I mean, obviously we've got Josh Reynolds, but they're pretty thin here. When the Cardinals play, you know, everyone I talk with,
Starting point is 00:17:22 on offense. Everyone I talk with, you know, really felt great about AJ Green. So all of a sudden, you know, we'll probably see a lot of 10 personnel here with four wide receivers on the field. The secondary here, it's young. They do add Janores Jenkins. Your thoughts on Shane Bowen seemingly did a great job last year. Greg, I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong there. No, they actually, their defense was really bad last year. Well, yeah, okay. So, So Bowen is a suspect guy? I don't know. We're not there.
Starting point is 00:17:56 I have no idea who does what. But I mean, they had the worst third down defense in the NFL last year, and they were very poor in the red zone. Yeah, that's true. I'm grading on a curve, I guess. I mean, obviously, I didn't have any expectations for the defense. So I thought they weren't. You know, the issue they're going to have to deal with, and again, we just don't know, is they're going to see 10 personnel.
Starting point is 00:18:17 They're going to see one back, four wide receivers from the Cardinals. Cardinals did that one in five snaps a year ago. That's Cliff Kingsbury's thing. He's an air raid coach. That's what I believe he would really like to do. And now you have Green and Hopkins on the outside. You've got Rondell Moore and Kirk on the inside. I mean, you've got a situation where you can do this.
Starting point is 00:18:38 And, you know, this is what the air raid is. It's a static offense. Players line up where they line up. They don't use motion, which, of course, the league has become a motion league. The cards are not a motion team. but they can put out four wide receivers now that are going to be difficult to handle. Well, at least the Titans do have some bodies here at Corner now. They've got some bodies, no question.
Starting point is 00:19:00 Fulton, the number one pick Farley and Jenkins. That's not bad. Are they going to get a pass rush this year, though, Greg, Bud DePrey and the rest here. Howard Landry, I mean, it's been years. Well, and the other thing about going with a spread 10 personnel package is it does open up space for Tyler Murray, and there's no question that his running, and I'm not talking about running by design,
Starting point is 00:19:22 I'm talking about where he takes off and runs. That's a significant part of their offense. Yeah, no question. Miami, New England. Boy, I'm wondering about which young quarterback I feel better about going into this matchup. I think it's a little closer than we thought. What did you think of Tuatong of Veloa this summer?
Starting point is 00:19:40 I thought he was good, but he made a couple of bonehead mistakes. Yeah, he didn't play a ton. I mean, he's, again, new quarterback. coordinator. Will Fuller won't play week one, but they've got good weapons. You know, I think he's kind of, I don't think there's a lot of mystery to Tua. He's a rhythm player. That's the way you want him to play. So, you know, I think New England actually is a very good defense, kind of an overlooked defense. I think they're going to be pretty solid. So, yeah, Tua is a tough guy to get
Starting point is 00:20:13 a read on. The interception you're talking about that he threw in the end his element, It was just, that was the kind of throw when I saw it. I was like, you know, you got to be better than that because that was just something you don't do. You threw it late in the middle of the field in the high red zone. You can't do that. So I'm actually more intrigued on the other side of the ball because the Miami Dolphins defense is one of the most difficult defenses to play against in the league.
Starting point is 00:20:38 Yeah. I thought it was somewhat maybe telling that, because I was wondering, maybe they keep camera around for this matchup here and take it from there. But no, they definitively let Cam go, and we're rolling with Mac Jones, week one in this tough matchup in South Florida. Yeah, and I think we know what they want to do. They obviously want to run the ball. They'll play two tight ends.
Starting point is 00:21:03 I thought Devin Asiase had a very good preseason from what I saw. It didn't see everything. So I think you're going to see them try to play that way, which doesn't mean they're not going to throw the ball. Of course, they're going to throw the ball. But I think that I don't think they're going to ask Mac Jones. to drop back 35, 40 times by choice unless the game dictates otherwise. Right.
Starting point is 00:21:24 But this is a tough defense to play against. A lot of pre-snap movement, a lot of amoeba looks, a lot of multiple front looks, you know, players on the line of scrimmage, then dropping out. I mean, they make it difficult on quarterbacks. So if Mack Jones plays well, you'll probably, your opinion will be raised considerably. Well, I see the tape to see if he plays well, how he played well, how it came a out. Right. You clearly don't want to be in a lot of third and long situation. No, coach does. That's not a profound statement. But this is a particularly tough defense to play against if you get
Starting point is 00:21:58 the third and long. Yeah, I mean, probably top five in the league. Tough matchup, tough spot here for Mack Jones in game one. Chicago and the Rams, I just real quick wanted to cover. You know, talk about what they did last year with Jalen Ramsey. He was not a shadow guy whatsoever. I mean, it seemed like you locked down one side of the field more often than not. No, I mean, again, but it's a new coordinator now, so we don't know what they're going to do. Yeah, true. So, you know, obviously Brandon Staley didn't do that with Jalen Ramsey, but it could happen. I mean, it's Rahim Morris.
Starting point is 00:22:38 Rahim Morris is the coordinator. So I can't answer that. I mean, Ramsey certainly has the ability. You talk to coaches, and they'll tell you Ramsey ability-wise is the best corner in the league, whether he plays like that every game, you know, who knows? I've studied him as an individual on every play, but just in terms of size, traits, you could argue he's the best corner in the league. So we'll see how Rahim Morris chooses to play defense.
Starting point is 00:23:03 You know, will he make him a match-up corner? We won't know that until week one or two or three, whenever they play someone who you think he has to match up to. Man, I'm a little, you know, I'd be a little concerned about the bear secondary in this game. I mean, Jalen Johnson was great last year. Artie Burns, they don't have much else here, Greg. And the Rams can, they can go four wide. I don't know how often they'll do it. I don't know if they'll put four wide receivers out there very often.
Starting point is 00:23:29 It won't be like Buffalo or Arizona. But they'll be three a lot. They'll put three a lot, no question. And they can stretch the field. That is a, this is a little bit, this is a, this is a tough matchup for the bear D, I feel. I agree with you. I think that, I think you're going to
Starting point is 00:23:46 see you then take some vertical shots. I think Sean McVey is very excited about Stafford's ability to take vertical shots. Yeah, good point. You know, the loss of Kyle Fuller. How tough of a matchup and a spot, and again, we know it's difficult, Greg. It's week one. It seems like I'm going to all teams with new coordinators, but I am going to be really curious to see the Chargers and Justin Herbert travel cross-country and take on the football team. Boy, I mean, what's the key here, this new revamped Charger O line, Austin Echler, out of practice early on. This is a scary one here. This is a tough matchup.
Starting point is 00:24:26 Well, the matchup to look at is just what you said. I think it's that D line, which is arguably the best in football of the Washington football team, versus this revamped O line, which should be much better. Yeah. You know, don't forget, now you have Slater, a rookie left tackle, and he's going to see Chase Young. Yeah. I mean, it'll be better. I don't know about week one.
Starting point is 00:24:45 they'll be much better. Right. So, I mean, we'll see. I mean, I think that so as good as we know Justin Herbert is, he also didn't play in the preseason. And now they're going
Starting point is 00:25:02 across country to play, you know, as I said, arguably the best D-Line in football. And this is, this could be an old school game. We could be looking at a 16-13 game here. Yeah, totally, totally. Not feeling it at all for the, charge your offense in this one.
Starting point is 00:25:17 I also wanted to touch on KC and Cleveland. You know, it looks like the chiefs are going with five new starters on the O line. I just got a weird vibe about them this year. I know their star studded, but it does kind of seem like the Patrick Mahomes nitpickers finally started to get something to sink their teeth into in that Super Bowl. Maybe I'm crazy, Greg, but it just seemed like some of the problems. signs from Mahomes last year, especially in the Super Bowl, not that it was all his fault, you know, maybe as this sample size grows, the improvisational style without structure style is
Starting point is 00:25:57 maybe tough to sustain with Mahomes. I mean, and no one knows the answer to that. That's his game. That was his game in college. It's why he was the 10th pick in the draft and not the first or second pick, because a lot of people were concerned about that. He's obviously been a great player, so we're not going to sit here and say he's not great. It's a legitimate question as his career continues. Can you continually make those kinds of
Starting point is 00:26:23 plays which have a random feel to them, but he's obviously phenomenal of doing that? It's an unanswerable, but he's going to continue. That's part of his game. That's the way he plays. Sure. Sure. I'm, maybe I'm nuts, but I'm already pretty close to going Josh Allen as the best quarterback. Yeah. You know, it's funny. I said this summer numerous times that Josh Allen is the most physically gifted quarterback in the league.
Starting point is 00:26:53 Not the best as we speak right now. Maybe that'll happen someday. Greg, he might be all time, Greg. Might be all time. Yeah. I mean, the point is, we'll say it for now. But you're right. I mean, he's super, super talented.
Starting point is 00:27:06 So we'll see. But, you know, the Chief's O' line is new. I think they're, aren't they starting two? rookies? Yeah. Yeah. And, you know, this Browns D is, I mean, they've got some players here, Greg. No question.
Starting point is 00:27:20 By the way, if you watch the Browns defensive tape, there were snaps last year in which Miles Garrett lined up inside a deep tackle in passing situation. So it'll be interesting to see if that happens against, you know, a rookie like Tray Smith from Tennessee, who I believe is the starting left guard. Well, we got, you got Greedy Williams, you got Greg Newsom, you got Denzo Ward, you know, Troy Hill. It's a revamp defense. They got John Johnson, who's a very, very good player.
Starting point is 00:27:46 I mean, this might actually be a little surprisingly tough go here for KC. So we shall see. One more. We're up against, we're at 27 minutes, Greg. Speaking of Josh Allen, you know, he did struggle. That had to have been his worst game last year against Pittsburgh. Yeah, that was not a great game. Pittsburgh was very aggressive, a lot of man coverage, a lot of blitz.
Starting point is 00:28:11 although Alan played a very good second half where they kind of settled things down through a lot more short balls because they're normally a team that likes to push it and Alan you know it was actually a game you could make the argument from a number standpoint which is what fantasy is that obviously it wasn't a great game but if you watch the tape Alan actually settled into that game you know what I mean because not every game your quarterback's going to throw for 400 it's just not the way the world works And it was late in the season as Alan was maturing. It was week 14.
Starting point is 00:28:45 And he kind of settled into that game very nicely and led two touchdown drives. If I'm not mistaken, on the first two possessions of the third quarter, which totally put the game in Buffalo's hands. But, and he actually made a great throw to Gabriel Davis for one of the touchdowns. A big, big time throw. I don't know if you remember it. Oh, man. Gabriel Davis looked great in that last preseason game. Yeah, he's good player.
Starting point is 00:29:07 Wow. So, you know, there's a template here for what Pittsburgh games. did a year ago. Will they play the same way? We don't know. But not quite the same Steeler D, Greg, this year. You mean just in terms of personnel? They've got Devin Bush back, but they've lost some guys here. Yeah. And I guess as we speak right now, we don't know the T.J. Watts situation. Right. Right. Yeah. I have not looked into that one yet. We're recording this on Wednesday night.
Starting point is 00:29:39 but it's a good stuff there what you said. It just feels to me that Alan hasn't peaked yet. For whatever it's worth, he actually looked very good playing that first half in the final preseason game. He looked extremely comfortable. I mean, he didn't look like, you know, people are saying, well, he's not going to have the same year. I can't speak to that as far as numbers. You know, he could throw 29 touchdowns instead of 37 and actually have a better year. We don't, you know, it's how the year plays out and how each game plays out.
Starting point is 00:30:12 But I'll say this, though, Greg, almost every time, especially with an older quarterback, when I see that big year, the next year I'm like, you know, just the nature of statistics regression will come. And it almost always does. Not in this case. I'm not, it could happen, but I'm not convinced that he cannot continue to get better. Yeah, and I think Emmanuel Sanders is a big, big weapon for them. He's like digs in the sense that he's just so refined. He understands how to run routes. He'll help Josh even more.
Starting point is 00:30:47 You know, I just think he may not catch, you know, 1,300 yards worth of balls, but I just think he's really going to be a good addition. Yeah. And I do like Gabe Davis. I think he's like a sizable guy. He was moving well in that game. I really liked it.
