Starting point is 00:00:07 It's time for the Fantasy Points podcast, brought to you by FantasyPoint.com. Top level fantasy football and NFL betting analysis from every perspective and angle, from numbers to the film room, with a single goal to help you score more fantasy points. A WaiverWire podcast here at FantasyPoint.com, my name is Joe Dolan. That is Tom Brawley. And as we do every Tuesday, we're going to take you through the WaverWire and talk about the top options. Tom, there's like 100 guys on the WaverWire article. at fantasy points.com and we can't talk about all of those guys. But what we do try to do here is talk
Starting point is 00:00:47 about the new situations to get you kind of in tune with what you should be doing, what you should be considering doing, what we think about all these situations, certainly at the running back position, but we have injuries everywhere this week that we need to discuss. So Tom, before, well, there was actually a couple of situations last night that needed to be talked about. And we will get to both of them. But the first thing is before the Monday night football game, the Jets traded for James Robinson of the Jaguars. And it has been, if you listen to the Week 7 recap podcast that we did yesterday, it had been evident that James Robinson was falling out of favor with the Jaguars. Doug Peterson made up some BS about knee soreness yesterday, which is clearly not the case for
Starting point is 00:01:36 James Robinson because he just got traded. But the Jets who lost Brise Hall trade for James Robinson they had been running a lot of like two running back sets, which is called pony package with Michael Carter and Breece Hall. But following the loss of Breece Hall, they wanted to keep doing those sets. So they went out, they acquired James Robinson for a conditional six-round pick. Both Michael Carter and James Robinson are rostered above 50% on Yahoo, which.
Starting point is 00:02:03 Well above. Yeah, we eschew writing them up for the waiver wire. But there is a chance that, you know, in a short bench league out there. Somebody who had Michael Carter is like, oh, God, Bree Sall's taken over this backfield, I need the bench spot. Or somebody who had James Robinson, oh, Travis E.TN's taken over this backfield. I need the bench spot.
Starting point is 00:02:24 There is a chance those guys were dropped. Here's the way I look at it, Tom. Tell me if you disagree. I think Carter, who's not as good as Breece Hall, but certainly had a good rookie season, is kind of a mid-range RB2 going forward. And I think until proven otherwise, James Robinson is a desperation flex kind of handcuffed type of guy. Yeah, I'm not as high on either guy.
Starting point is 00:02:43 Well, not as high on Michael Carter as you, I guess then. Because I just don't see, I don't think he's nearly as talented as Brice. I don't think this is a very good offense right now. It was all Brice Hall. It was, Zach Wilson has done nothing here, basically since the Steelers game. We'll see if he can pick up his play here with Brice being out. But I think this is going to be a pretty split backfield. I think they're going to be both like flex options at best.
Starting point is 00:03:09 Maybe Carter has the early advantage, but I think they're, you know, they traded for James Robinson. They kind of want him to have a big role in this backfield. And I don't think he was playing particularly well. Michael Carter hasn't been playing particularly well either. That's why Bruce starting to pick up more snaps and take more playing time. So I see both of these guys as being RB3 types moving forward. And we'll see who emerges here. I think this is going to be kind of like an.
Starting point is 00:03:39 open competition here for the first couple of weeks. And whoever steps up and makes more plays is going to eventually see more playing time. But I would think Michael Carter has the advantage, at least for the first week or two, while James Robinson learns the playbook and gets used to everything. But I was, you know, Michael Carter was looking like, yeah, he might be like a high-end RB2 after the news happened. But now that we have James Robinson getting into this backfield, it's probably going to be kind of a wash. I just have a tough time seeing one of these guys really emerging as a difference maker.
Starting point is 00:04:14 But, I mean, there's always a chance whenever we have these uncertain situations. I'm not saying, don't go out and pick up these guys. James Robinson's 87% owned in Yahoo League, so he's not out there. And Carter's at 67%. So maybe if you're playing an eight to 10 team, eight to 10 team leagues, he might be out there. So he's certainly worth an ad just in case he can emerge a little bit. But, I mean, we're kind of in the similar situation to where we were last year, Joe. And he was a guy that you weren't very excited about playing. Maybe he can creep into that low-end Rby-2 range. Now, let's talk about the other situation from Monday night.
Starting point is 00:04:51 And I'm not sure how relevant this is for most fantasy leagues, but certainly if you're in a Super Flex League, the bizarre Patriots quarterback situation. Mack Jones comes out, and, I mean, he threw a terrible interception. The chance for Zappy, zappy, zappy. He comes out, gives him a little bit of a spark, and then things collapse in the collapse in the second half for the Patriots.
Starting point is 00:05:11 Bill Belichick says after the game that he does not anticipate that they're going to be platooning their quarterbacks anymore. Why, I am no idea what to think. My guess is they're going to go once Mac Jones is 100%, if he's 100%, they're going to go to him. But what is your read on this Patriot quarterback situation, Tom, for those in Superflex leagues?
Starting point is 00:05:30 I think they rush Mac Jones back a little bit early and he did not look very comfortable back there. but that's an indication to me that they want him to be the guy. If he wasn't close to 100% last night and they were playing him, it says that they want him to be the guy. So I think they're invested in him. Obviously, they drafted him in the first round. Bill Belichick is more ruthless than most coaches. He doesn't always necessarily care about draft capital and how much money they signed you for.
Starting point is 00:06:00 He's on the lower end of caring about that type of those type of things. I just think the fact that they tried to get Mac Jones out there and he didn't look quite right. I think maybe with another week of practice here, he didn't take many hits last night. I think he should be healthy coming out of that game. So I think they're going to give him another chance here. But we'll see how it plays out. I mean, maybe we're going to be in a situation where both guys are getting some reps in game. You know, kind of the hot hand approach at quarterback.
Starting point is 00:06:33 rotating them until somebody, you know, leads a couple scoring drives. And so it might be a situation where I want no part of, you know, I would, I would prefer to own Mac Jones, but I probably might not be playing either guy at this point, even if we get word that one will start, because I could see both of these guys getting some playing time each week until they settle on a guy.
Starting point is 00:07:01 One more situation that I want to discuss, that's newsy Tom and because I had to actually before we came on the podcast I had to update the waiver wire article because his name was listed. Matt Ryan got benched and this is permanent. Frank Reich saying, hey look guys, yeah, he's got a shoulder injury, but we're doing this for the good of the franchise and to try to save the asses of the coach and general manager. They are not going to Nick Foles though, Indianapolis. They are going to Sam Ellenger. And I, um, I, I thought it was funny because I saw a tweet by Derek Classen of football outsiders who does some stuff.
Starting point is 00:07:40 And he says, here is, here is Sam Ellinger. Just imagine if Jalen Hertz sucked. That's Sam Ellinger. And then I texted our guy, Fran Duffy, from the Philadelphia Eagles, who, uh, who does obviously fantastic draft content. And I said, I wanted, I wanted a scouting report. You know, I said, what did you think of Sam Ellenger coming out? And he said, L.O.L.L.
Starting point is 00:08:03 him to Jalen Hertz and he did not know about the Derek Classen tweet. And I think what I want to, I want to be careful here is because I think Jalen Hertz right now is probably better than we anticipated he would be. Maybe Sam Ellenger is not very good. But what stylistically that means, Tom, is we're not going to be having these 60 drop back crappy three-yard passes to Paris Campbell. This is going to be if Sam Ellinger does start long term, a philosophically different offense in Indianapolis. Yeah, that's it. I've got a few questions about Paris Campbell and the discord already this week. And it's, you know, with Sam Ellinger, that's kind of been the thing the last couple of weeks. They've moved to this more, you know, quick passing, get the ball out of Matt Ryan's hands in the short to intermediate areas.
Starting point is 00:08:56 That's why Campbell's been at like basically 25 targets over the last two weeks. And I don't think that's going to be the case anymore. We're going to be Jonathan Taylor's going to be getting 25 to 30 touches. And they're going to get Ellinger on the move. So, I mean, he's certainly a guy. I mean, we can get into the quarterbacks here. He's a guy long term I would be maybe taking a look at in the super flex leg just because he can run. For sure.
Starting point is 00:09:20 Looking at his college stats, he had over 31 rushing touchdowns in his final three years of Texas, you know, over 1,900 yards. over his four-year career at Texas. So that is on the table. We're always looking for those types of guys. So, but it is going to be a completely different offense. If you had Alec Pierce, you know, if you have Michael, Michael Pittman, all these receivers are getting a downgrade here moving forward. I mean, Matt Ryan, say what you want about him at this point, but he could still filter the ball to his best players in the passing game. and that might not be the case with Sam Allenger.
Starting point is 00:10:03 There could be some, you know, we've seen a lot of ugly stat lines from Justin Fields early in the year. Marcus Marriota recently. I don't know if it's going to be that ugly with Elender, but we could see some lines like that where Elender is thrown for 170 yards with 16 completions in a game. But yeah, while you're saying that, Tom, we'll talk about a couple of, a couple of these fantasy quarterbacks who might be out there.
Starting point is 00:10:29 I mean, I still don't think it's pretty with Justin Fields, but he's starting to play better, and the rushing production is there. And that's good news for Justin Fields. He's still rostered. It's going to go up after last night. Oh, yeah. Just under 40% of Yahoo Leagues. He and Daniel Jones are two quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:10:53 Jones has played better than Fields this year, but there are two quarterbacks who are running the ball quite a bit right now and are still available in under 50% of Yahoo Leagues and certainly are viable pickups. Again, I don't know if either of these guys is going to become a reliable every week starter for you, but Justin Fields at minimum is starting to resemble a lowercase version of what you drafted him to be. Yeah, and this is a big week. we got both Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert on by. So there's going to be a lot of people scrambling to pick up a streamer this week.
Starting point is 00:11:29 And Justin Fields has a tougher matchup against the Cowboys this week. Oh, yeah. That has not been a pretty matchup for a lot of people. But the legs are what has really come around here the last couple of weeks. His fantasy points have gone up 17, 19, and then 24 last night. He converted five third downs last night with his, his feet and another five through the air, which is really impressive against a Patriots defense that was, you know, completely shut down the Detroit Lions and Cleveland Browns before that.
Starting point is 00:12:03 So I'm with you, Joe. I do think we're seeing, you know, that was the best I'd probably have seen Justin Field play up to this point in his career. I also think the offense is starting to get a little bit of a rhythm. I think Luke Getzzi is starting to, you know, kind of cater the game to him a lot. A lot of one, two reads. And if it's not there, just run the ball, which is, that's all we want to see from Justin Field. Make, you know, give them easy decisions.
Starting point is 00:12:31 If it's not there, then tuck it and run. And we're starting to see a lot of that. And that's great for our game. You know, he's going to have opportunities to really rack up the rushing guards if they continue to play this way. And that's, I think he's a long-term pickup. If you've been struggling at quarterback, maybe the light is starting to turn on a little bit.
Starting point is 00:12:53 I don't think he's going to be one of these ever an elite type of passer. But as long as he's running a little bit and has an opportunity to score touchdowns, and the running game has really gotten going for the pairs. I mean, it's a weekly staple for them at this point. So the offense is trending upward. So I think he's worth taking a pick, you know, pick him up. He was drafted as kind of like the QB 14 or 15. and he's starting to get into that territory.
Starting point is 00:13:23 He's starting to show his upside that we saw that a lot of people were excited about in the summer. Going to the running back position, Tom, obviously there's going to be a couple of situations here. We already talked about the Carter and Robinson one, but those guys aren't really available in leagues. Gus Edwards. I mean, every league I was in, he was already rostered before last week, but 58% of Yahoo League league still available. And I would think right now that he has earned the opportunity to be the lead guy in that backfield.
Starting point is 00:13:56 That doesn't mean it will not change. You know, we've had, we've seen Kenyon Drake look great and we've seen Kenyon Drake look awful in that backfield. Maybe it's the same way for Gus Edwards, but he scored two touchdowns in his return. And I mean, he looked better. That's now three running backs, by the way, in Baltimore, who have looked better at some point than J.K. Dobbins has all year. So, I mean, Gus Edwards got an opportunity here to be.
Starting point is 00:14:22 League winner is a little strong because this backfield always. They're going to continue to rotate these backs. I hate to break the news to everybody that, I mean, he's scored the two Russian touchdowns. But that was also a weird game. Lamar Jackson career, career low pass attempts in that game for games that he's started and completed. He's had a couple where he's started and picked up an injury. including against the Browns last year. But just 16.
Starting point is 00:14:51 That's not the way they're going to play offense moving forward. Mark Andrews was playing through a knee injury. But it's a great sign. He looked much better than J.K. Dobbins. We should say that probably Dobbins, if you own him, you can drop him at this point. He's probably going to be, he's already, you know, they put him on the IR. He's looking at least a four to six week recovery. And I wouldn't be surprised if he misses the rest of the season.
Starting point is 00:15:17 even if he does come back, we're going to have a four-man back-field basically here. Though they might, you know, bump Justice Hill up. But it's going to be tough for him to come back and really play a big factor in this backfield. But Dobbins is the guy for now. Edwards. Edwards, I mean, Edwards, yes, yes, Gus Edwards. But he's never going to be a guy that's, you know, playing 60 to 70% of the snaps, getting 25 carries a game.
Starting point is 00:15:46 but maybe we can stick in this like 12 to 15 carries per game. He's good down to the goal line as we saw with the two rushing touchdowns. He's not going to provide anything in the passing game. But maybe the Ravens running game is starting to get on track here a little bit with the punishing downhill runner of the Gus bus back in the midst. Another couple of running backs to discuss here, T-Bro. All right, we got to get into the Carolina backs because I'll be completely honest. Did I think they were worthwhile pickups?
Starting point is 00:16:18 Yes. Was I excited about it? No. And I've been telling people all year, like, I don't think there's a good handcuff in Carolina because I think Chuba Hubbard stinks and I think Deontay Foreman's just a guy. Both of the, the answer to the question of which one of them should I play was both of them, though. Like an unbelievable against Tampa, color me skeptical going forward, but they outperformed my expectations for them, both Foreman and Hubbard did.
Starting point is 00:16:45 Yeah, so Hubbard also picked up a little bit of an ankle injury in that game. It looks like he's going to be fine, but I think that might make Foreman the slightly better pick up here. But it's a little funky. Hubbard was kind of the preferred passing back. He outsnapped him in those type of situations. He was on the field as kind of the third down back. So Hubbard, he does have, but he also picked up the ankle injury. So honestly, if I was somebody that picked up either one of these guys and they had a solid performance, maybe I might look to trade them.
Starting point is 00:17:24 You know, this might be as high as it gets. That performance against the Buccaneers was unexpected, but it was also a no-show from the Buccaneers' run defense last week. It was, yeah, an awful performance by Brady as well. So we saw what this offense was before last week. I don't think PJ Walker is turned into a, all of a sudden turned into a serviceable quarterback. This offense is more likely to go back into the tank and you might not want to use either of these guys. But they're still worth pickups. Maybe splitting up the backfield and getting McCaffrey out of the offense is going to make them better.
Starting point is 00:18:05 But Keller me a little bit skeptical about that. But there's certainly worth pickups at this point. And there is still a guy. I know we've been talking about him for a couple of weeks on here. And Tom, we've gotten a lot of questions about him in our Discord. And I've really wanted people to go pick him up if possible. It is a, there is a chance that Kyron Williams, the rookie running back for L.A., the Rams, is going to play this week. And we'll talk about another guy from the Rams, by the way, as well.
Starting point is 00:18:34 But Williams was on IR in week one. He suffered a high ankle sprain on the opening kickoff of the game. And you remember it was that Thursday night game against Buffalo, the season opener. Adam Schaefter was on NFL Live or the pregame show or whatever the hell, one of the ESPN shows. And he said, do not be surprised if this Kyron Williams has a big role. And clearly, Schefter at that point had been told that Cam Acres was in the doghouse. And he didn't say that. But, you know, they come out and Darrell Henderson is playing almost exclusively.
Starting point is 00:19:11 exclusively in that week one game. And then now, now we know what happened, what has happened with Camp Makers, who's probably played his last snap for the Rams, at least for the time being. Kairn Williams is a guy who I think the Rams trust as a receiver. I think they trust him in past protection. First and foremost, that's important because their offensive line has been garbage.
Starting point is 00:19:33 Jordan Rod Rieg has now insinuated in recent weeks, as Williams has gotten closer to a return. but the pathway for snaps is there for Kiron Williams. And while I still think Daryl Henderson is the better option, imagine if Kyrin Williams becomes that third downback, gets all those calorie-rich touches, you know, Stafford having to beat a blitz or having to beat a pass rush checking it down. I would not be surprised at all if over the second half of the season,
Starting point is 00:20:05 Kyron Williams becomes a usable weekly fantasy asset. Yeah, and Greg, Greg O'Sail, compared them to James White and Austin Echler in the pre-draft process. They also cleared the way a little bit by cutting Jake Funk. Fake junk. Fake junk, yeah, they cut off. So they're making their, you know, the signs are all pointing towards a return this week. So I'm with you, Joe. I mean, we've seen Tyler Higbee get all these, like, low-calorie bullshit targets that are
Starting point is 00:20:38 two or three yards down the field. What if those start turning into targets for Kyron Williams and... Is it Kyron or Kieran? I don't know. It looks like Kyron. Let's go, Kyron. I'll look it up while you battle on here. Yeah, that is Tyron.
Starting point is 00:20:55 But anyway, if those targets that were, you know, going to Higbee in the early part of the season, what if those start going to Williams here? And he can certainly do more with him as a running back with a little bit more elusiveness and juice. So maybe he could develop into a guy that's getting you a three or four catches a game and six to eight carries per game. So, and Darrell Henderson, we know he has a long track record of having trouble staying healthy for long stretches of game.
Starting point is 00:21:24 So it's in the realm of possibilities that he could be the go-to back in this backfield at some point. So every league that I'm in, I've been adding to him. He's still around 30% owned. I could see that number being by this point next week, everybody's scrambling to pick him up and, you know, he's at 65 or 70% own after we see what he does against the 49ers next, on Sunday.
Starting point is 00:21:49 Any interest in Latavius Murray now that Mike Boone is on IR? Not really. A little bit. You can use them, right, if you need them? Yeah, I mean, he's, and it seems like he's kind of the, you know, he might be the goal line back here, finished a short touchdown. but yeah, he's still, he's owned in most of my league. So I don't even have that dilemma.
Starting point is 00:22:12 But, yeah, he's certainly worth a pick-up here. The coaching staffs seems to hate Melvin Gordon, and they seem to love Latavius Murray. So, you know, there's always a chance that Melvin Gordon fumbles another ball here. And Latavius Murray is suddenly looking at like 15 carries per game here moving forward. I mean, I don't know how he's rostered in under 30% of Yahoo leagues. I guarantee you a greater percentage of our subscribers have them. How in the hell is Wondale Robinson only 29% rostered?
Starting point is 00:22:45 I mean, Tom, I think there is a, it might not even be, it might not even be like even close to a hot take. It might be the likely outcome that this guy ends up leading this team in receptions. Yeah, I mean, we've touched on Wondale. I feel like for the last four weeks and the 29% owned on Yahoo, that might be all like fantasy points subscribers. Seriously. I mean, I have no idea how it's still this low. You know, the snaps, this is what we wanted to see. The snaps were up at 70% last week.
Starting point is 00:23:15 So he's getting close to, I don't think he, I think they're going to continue to kind of rotate these receivers a little bit. So he might not be like a full-time, full-time receiver, you know, playing 90% of the snaps. But I would expect him to stay in this like 75% to 85% range. And last week was kind of what we were expecting to see from him moving forward. He might not blow up for these big games. That's just not the nature of the Giants passing game at this point.
Starting point is 00:23:43 But he's going to be a rock solid wide receiver three, getting you five to seven catches per game for 60 or 70. You know, just one of those guys, you just plug and play every week. And if he scores a touchdown, you're looking at a great week from him. So go out and get them already. We're tired of talking about him on this podcast. Yeah, I'm sick of it. Jake Tribby always writes him up on like the D.E.
Starting point is 00:24:06 EFS early look, too. He's like, hey, this guy's undervalued. Two more names that I want to bring up, Tom. One guy is not usable this week. That's Joshua Palmer, who's been dropped a ton because of the concussion and Keenan Allen coming back. But Mike Williams picked up a high ankle sprain. You can probably get them for cheap this week if you don't need them this week because they're on buy. So I don't know if anybody's going to be blowing out their fab for Joshua Palmer. And one more guy, Tom, I hate him. I've hated him ever since he's come into the league. But the Kansas City Chiefs have the number one offense in EPA, DVOA, AVD, AVD, ABOA, X, Y, whatever words, letter salad you want to use. The Chiefs have the number one offense.
Starting point is 00:24:53 And I think he's going to be inconsistent. But there's very few guys who are available in 75% of Yahoo Leagues who have the potential to have the blowup game the way Mikul Hardman does. Yeah, and he's been a little bit more. consistent recently, you know, 12 fantasy points a couple weeks ago, 13, and then he blew up for the two touchdowns last week, 28 fantasy points overall. So maybe he's kind of developed, you know, MVS is, you know, he hasn't really popped off for a big game yet. Juju's coming on here a little bit, but Mikul is, you know, hanging in there. So he's 24% on. Let me throw out another name, because we're probably going to touch on.
Starting point is 00:25:37 Let's just jump right into the David and Joku injury. Okay, yeah, yeah. Yeah, he's out for the next two to five weeks. And they're on by next week, so he's clearly not going to play this week in Joku. Yeah, so I would expect him, you know, at least this week and maybe multiple weeks, multiple games. But I think that elevates both Harrison Bryant and Donovan People's Jones.
Starting point is 00:25:59 Let me just hit Donovan People's Jones. He's like really flying on the radar. He had a couple quiet games. in weeks two and three, but otherwise, he's seen 32 targets in the other five games, 25 catches for 326 receiving yards. Hasn't popped for a touchdown yet, but he's been kind of a pivotal part of this passing attack. And now in Joku, who was the number two guy behind Amari Cooper, is out of the way. So I think he's a viable, you know, a little streamer here if you need a guy for this week.
Starting point is 00:26:32 and Harrison Bryant, I mean, if you're using Injoku, you could pick him up. Kanez just to, you know, almost like a little handcuff. They also lost Farrow Brown in that game. So the tight end position is kind of cleared out for Harrison Bryant to play a lot of snaps. And Brissette discovered his tight ends here. And Joku's been on a real role as the number two receiver. And Bryant's been also involved. It isn't like he's been completely riding the bench.
Starting point is 00:27:05 So Brissette's at least, you know, has some chemistry with him. He has thrown him the ball a little bit. So I see him as, you know, being a plug and play, like low end, tight end one this week. So if you lost in Joku, I mean, I think just go pick up Harrison Bryant and play him for as long as you, at David Njoku's out of the lineup. Don't think Russell Wilson as bad as he's been is in danger of losing his job to Brett Rippin after that game against the Jets. But Rippin did target Greg Dulcich, who's still available in close to 90% of Yahoo Leagues and should have more upside when Russell Wilson returns to the lineup.
Starting point is 00:27:41 And it's probably worth noting, Tom, that Jerry Judy's name has come up in trade rumors. So maybe there's going to be some more targets available here in the future for Greg Dolchich. Yeah, we pounded the table for these rookie tight ends last week. And Bellinger, unfortunately, he got a finger to the eye and needs to get surgery. but the other two really came through and, hey, they should be picked up and played again. Greg Dolcich is, he has a path here to being a top 12 tight end for the rest of the season. He's only 11% owned, as you said, six for 51 last week with a backup quarterback. I think his rule and his, we're only seeing the beginning of it here, hopefully.
Starting point is 00:28:27 There's a chance for it to really grow, and they love them. They drafted him in the third round. And they basically banished Elberto to the end of the bench. And as soon as Dulcich was healthy, they plugged him right in the lineup. And he was playing over the 70% of the staff. So, and Kate Otten, it looks like Camp Brake could be out for, I mean, it doesn't, you know, it's a scary situation with him. He could be out multiple weeks here.
Starting point is 00:28:54 Otten's been, he's been right in the lineup here, gone for 10 plus. fantasy points in both games that Cam Brayt's been out. They play Thursday night against the Ravens. The Ravens have stiffened up against receivers. They were getting crushed early in the season, but more targets have been funneling to these tight ends.
