We're breaking down the fantasy football reactions to the George Pickens to Dallas Cowboys trade that just happened a few hours ago. I'm Theo Greminger with Brett Whitefield here for Fantasy Football Daily on Fantasy Points. Brett, this is one where I scheduled all my podcasts for every day except for Wednesday this week. This is supposed to be my writing day, work on my rankings.
Starting point is 00:01:01 And then this morning, me and you are talking to each other on Discord and the news breaks. George Pickens gets traded to Dallas Cowboys. we were waiting for a trade like this to happen when we were broadcasting the NFL draft. We get it about a week and a half later, but it's still awesome. Huge fantasy football ramifications from this one. How exciting is this trade in the big picture? I mean, it's very exciting. I mean, there's a lot of moving parts here.
Starting point is 00:01:28 A lot of unintended consequences, I think, for fantasy football. And it's something where I think we were pretty steadfast in that we didn't think George Pickens would ever play another down for the Steelers. I'm just glad we got this done in May so we don't have to talk about it all freaking offseason. So here we are. Yeah, and a big, big shout out to Chris Wecht, who does our projections here at Fantasy Points. He's an absolute machine. Just a little sneak preview here.
Starting point is 00:01:51 We're going to be Scott Barrett and I are going to be meeting with Chris Weck next week on School of Scott, basically to go through a lot of these projections. But we do have an update this morning when we're going to be talking about these players. You're going to get real-time updates available only here. at fantasy points. So while some other sites are looking to sort through this, we already have it all sorted out at 849 in the AM on the East Coast. But Brett, let's get the compensation out of the way. This is not a giveaway by any means. Dallas trades a 2026 third round pick and a 2027 fifth round pick for George Pickens and a 2026 sixth rounder. You also, Dallas also makes this move for Pickens,
Starting point is 00:02:36 and correct me if I'm wrong here, they're going to pay them the money because you don't give up the third unless you plan on extending this contract. Do you agree with that, or is that me being a little bit presumptuous? I think maybe a little presumptuous. I was going to say,
Starting point is 00:02:50 I think this trade competition is actually the sweet spot for both teams where I think Pittsburgh can be, you know, happy with the hall they got for sure, a third and a fifth, only have to send a seventh back for that fifth round move up. And then they get, they get rid of Pickens, who was becoming a headache for them. Now, Dallas, they really, I mean, they took care of a massive need here. They needed a wide receiver to very badly. And if Pickens is on the straight and arrow all year, sure, they might go ahead and pay them.
Starting point is 00:03:20 But also the compensation wasn't so much that you reasonably could see them washing their hands of it and letting somebody else pay them and then still getting, that third round pick back that they gave up. And it only basically cost them a fifth rounder for a year of rental of George Pickens. And I think that's a really nice dart throw. Maybe they have something here. Maybe they don't. Either way, I feel like both teams should be happy with the way the terms of this deal came out. So I actually, I'll push back with you on that one.
Starting point is 00:03:44 I don't think Dallas takes on George Pickens unless they plan on extending him. Because that was sort of the narrative was, you know, we always talk about George Pickens as a guy who has some issues. I mean, there's been some not necessarily, it's not necessarily too much off the field stuff. It's a little bit more like on the field when it comes to Pickens. Attitude. Yeah. And we talked about this as a couple weeks back when we were saying, could he get traded during the NFL draft?
Starting point is 00:04:12 And you were sort of like, we both thought he'd get traded, but we didn't really necessarily know to whom. We didn't know what the market would be because NFL teams value locker room guys, attitudes completely differently. Jerry Jones is perfect for George Pickens. This has been a organization that's taken on guys like this multiple times over in actually multiple decades at this point, Brett. So for me, I think that a deal is going to be in the works. I'll sort of go on the record here that I think that a deal will be worked out before the season with Pickens.
Starting point is 00:04:44 Just my gut feel that you don't take on a player like this that is this explosive to potentially to a locker room and a team that wants to contend this year in Dallas. I think this is going to be all worked out. So we'll see which way we go, but I think we're button heads a little bit. Any way you cut it, though, Brett, we're really excited about it. Let's talk about Pickens specifically. So Pickens comes to Dallas. Dallas was a team that didn't add anything at the wide receiver two spot. In fact, they lost Brandon Cook's this off season. We thought that they would be potentially drafting a Matthew Golden, a Tet McMillan at the 12 spot. Instead, they draft Trevor Booker, arguably the best guard in this draft class.
Starting point is 00:05:28 They improve the offensive line immediately with Booker. Then they sort of sit still here. You're talking about Jalen Tolbert. You're talking about Turbin. You're talking about tight end Jake Ferguson. Those sort of names being thrown around as a secondary target to C.D. Lamb. Now you get one of the more talented wide receiver twos in the league in Pickens. I absolutely. absolutely love this one. I think when we look at it, George Pickens' target share-wise, north of 20, but 20% target share in this offense is going to put him in a situation where 110, 120 target range, I think opposite CD-LAM. And this is also, I think there's an opportunity for very high-value targets talking about over-the-top deep looks to Pickens, a lot of air yards in this role,
Starting point is 00:06:17 and also advantageous coverages against certain teams who are going to do everything they can to take away CD Lamb. Do you agree with that? How bullish are you about Pickens in this number two wide receiver role? From a team construction standpoint, this is a great pickup.
Starting point is 00:06:35 I mean, we talk about complementary skill sets. In fact, Theo, you and I leading up to the draft, we thought Dallas at 12 was a legitimate landing spot for Matthew Golden because C.D. Lamb needs that field stretching guy opposite of him. And George Pickens, that's what he brings to the table. Now, he's a little bit more of the possession type field stretcher, where it's a lot of contested catches, back shoulder type stuff. But you go over to the Fantasy Points Data Suite right now, you can find all this juicy info on Pickens. He ranks 36th in ass and 26th an overall win rate. And I think those are
Starting point is 00:07:07 really impressive numbers considering his archetype. He's not known as a big time separator or route runner yet. He put up really good numbers. That's, you know, that's over a hundred and 20 qualifying pass catchers there. He tied for 10th in contested catches. He was first in our hero catch metric, which are these, you know, the plays you've come to know and love from George Pickens where he's just contorting through the air,
Starting point is 00:07:30 basically a terribly thrown football that he ends up catching. 12th and A.2, fourth an air yard chair for Pittsburgh last year. So that field stretching variety there. And he was as productive as he was with a 75% catchable target rate, which is 75th among all receivers he ran at least 300 routes. I mean, that's terrible. So, like, he produced at a high level despite bad quarterback play. He's immediately getting an upgrade in Dak Prescott and an offense that traditionally
Starting point is 00:08:00 under Dak Prescott has led the league in dropbacks. So, I mean, this is a win-win across the board for George Pickens and the Dallas Cowboys. Yeah, I mean, really the only thing, if you go to Fantasy Points data that should go down significantly for George Pickens is the first read rate. That's going to be a lot more C.D. Lamb. But again, like, for George Pickens to escape D.K. Metcalf, a guy with sort of overlapping skill sets to him in an offense that was going to be very, very run heavy. And to get away from Arthur Smith, a offense coordinator who is notoriously bad on his secondary targets, just a massive win for Pickens. And I think if you're looking at this from a redraft perspective, Pickens has a lot more clarity to.
Starting point is 00:08:46 today than he did before. And I think that when we also unpack it, he's not only going to be the number two option in the passing game, but he could be that he's really the offense's number two option because of the lack of quality at running back and the lack of guys that we think could take on a high volume role at running back. So Pickens and Redraft moves up. I think he also moves up significantly in Dynasty
Starting point is 00:09:08 because Brett and I, again, are bumping heads on the long-term landing spot. I think this is going to be a Pickens stays in Dallas. Brett, you have some question marks there, but you think he could end up staying there. So Pickens absolutely a winner in Dynasty, absolutely a winner in redraft. Where does Chris Wecht have Pickens in the projections at fantasy points? Yeah, initial rerun of the projections this morning. He's conservatively projecting Pickens at wide receiver 36, which I think, you know, that's a wide receiver three spot.
Starting point is 00:09:37 He could outproduce that if the Cowboys get back to that really heavy volume of pass that we've seen from them. You look at their backfield, too. It's like that that's very much on the table, right? We saw Dak Prescott lead the NFL and dropbacks two years in a row. So, and Chris currently isn't projecting that. So if we do see a little bit more of that than we did last year, I think Pickens comfortably outproduces wide receiver 36.
Starting point is 00:10:03 Yeah, and also just to get into the projections, you know, when people hear wide receiver 36, they don't get excited. But you're talking about just how tight the, the, the, the, the, the scoring numbers could be between wide receiver 36 and like wide receiver 27. It could be the difference of George Pickens having a two touchdown game on top of like his normal output. That's sort of like how tight it gets when you're talking about the line between wide receiver three, low end wide receiver three and high end wide receiver three. So I think that's a fine estimate for Chris to have on him. Just very curious, can you pull up Jake Ferguson here?
Starting point is 00:10:41 because Jake Ferguson was one. I don't want to make this a Jake Ferguson show. I'm a notorious Jake Ferguson fader. But Jake Ferguson was one where even yesterday, I see some smart people on X saying, oh, Jake Ferguson, we see this all the time. Jake Ferguson gets this artificial boost in dynasty value, artificial boost and redraft value because of his circumstances
Starting point is 00:11:05 being Dak Prescott's tight end. To me, this hurts Jake Ferguson because who am I going to target in the red zone here, Brett. When I have George Pickens and I have Jake Ferguson, like I'm thinking about it. I'm not necessarily going to feed, you're going to force feed my tight end when I have George Pickens. 100%.
Starting point is 00:11:21 Yeah, we've got Ferguson falling to tight end 18 now. Again, this is via Chris Wex projections, which are our projections on the site. You can go find them right now at FantasyPoint.com. So yeah, drop in a tight end 18, that's not pretty. I mean, that's in redraft, that's, you know, that's not a rosterable player, right, Theo. And then in Dynasty,
Starting point is 00:11:41 If you're in a Titan Premium League, you're holding on to him, of course. But it's not a guy who's probably going to crack your lineup a ton. Yeah. Jake Ferguson is definitely not one that I will be flag planting anywhere this year. I think he's sort of a purgatory value. And now the whole argument is for him being the secondary target goes completely out the window. Let's take a quick break. We come back.
Starting point is 00:12:01 We're going to unpack Dak Prescott, D.K. McCaff, and some sneaky winners from this trade. Welcome back, Fantasy Football Daily, Theo Griminger, Brett Whitefield. Let's talk about Dak because we talked about this in the pre-show. And I told you his current ADP in on Underdog and his current ADP and FFPC and you were just like kind of laughed at it. Because we are officially going to flag plant Dak Prescott as a player that you should draft the hell out of if you're in early best balls this week. You're going to see a huge correction. Dak Prescott right now is the QB 18 on FFPC and he's the QB 19 on Underdog. Now, Brett, maybe a little, little bit of this is because people have some hamstring question marks.
Starting point is 00:12:47 But I think it's really more with the, he's sort of fallen into this mid-QB-2 line. And when we look at underdog, so FFPC, this one's a redraft one. We look at underdog. A lot of times the quarterbacks with a lack of stacking options might get pushed a little bit slightly down. So maybe DAC is a little bit more like the QB 17-16, but there's just no other Dallas Cowboys pass catchers to kind of pair with him. because the nature of bestball. But anyway, you cut it. These are kind of gross, gross projections that drafters have had.
Starting point is 00:13:18 Where is Chris Wecht on Dak Prescott after this George Pickens trade? Yeah, again, talking with Chris this morning. So he's conservatively projecting him as QB9 now. But he told me you can make the argument for as high as QB7. So that's a massive value, right? I mean, you're talking QB 18 ADP right now. So to get a, you know, a QB1 significantly. later than you should. And you know what? Chris isn't even baking into the cake here.
Starting point is 00:13:46 And I think you agree with me. I think DAC has a little bit more rushing potential this year. If we've seen DAC work out, you see that the svelt frame, he's lean, he's mean, he looks fast, the hamstrings fully healthy. The workout videos are impressive. I'm a sucker for those, by the way, so you'll never catch me shrugging at those. But I think I was already all in on the DAC bounceback. I'm bullish now, you. Yeah. So I think that the rushing output, it's going to be pretty, it's, it's the hamstring, really. If he's healthy, though, Dak is going to find rushing lanes in this offense. And I think he's a little bit more of a threat around the goal line because of again, Javante Williams, Miles Sanders,
Starting point is 00:14:26 Phil Mafaa, a Jaden Blue, even if you're a truther, you still don't anticipate Jaden Blue getting anything inside the five-yard line. So Dak is a real threat there. But just to go back to Dak Prescott. Like last year he plays eight games, but the year before was an unbelievable season for him, fantasy-wise, where he finishes as the quarterback four in points per game. But over the second half of the season, he had this ridiculous stretch. He had a quarterback one week, a quarterback three week, a quarterback two week, a quarterback one week, quarterback 17, and then it was quarterback three, quarterback three. So it was like this unbelievable stretch for Dak. I mean, his quality of play in 23 was exceptional and he could get back there this year. And if we go back to his ADP in
Starting point is 00:15:11 2023, he was getting drafted as a high-end QB2 and ended up being one of the best values you could have drafted at the position. So go ahead, get yourself some Dak Prescott for sure right now if you are a best ball drafter. Let's flip it over to Pittsburgh. And what's super interesting here when it comes to the Steelers is this is a whole new offense. They're going to have a new quarterback. We don't know who it's going to be. Maybe it's going to be Aaron Rogers. Maybe it's going to be Mason Rudolph or Will Howard. But they're going to have a new quarterback anyway you cut it versus the Justin Fields, Russell Wilson, a combination that they had last year. And it's funny, Brett. Last year, the Russell Wilson, Justin Fields was looked at as like this, you know,
Starting point is 00:15:52 they get these two sort of vagabond quarterbacks that nobody really wanted. And they got a lot of production out of them fantasy wise. I think Pittsburgh Steelers fans would love to have a Fields Wilson combination now based on what they have on the roster. But maybe Rogers will end up being the quarterback. I don't know. He's working out with D.K. McCaff, working out with Caleb Johnson, both sides sort of saying the right things. Not sure what's going to go on there. He's not exactly the most predictable guy.
Starting point is 00:16:18 But when we look at Pittsburgh, it's going to be a new quarterback, new running back, a new wide receiver one, and a new wide receiver two to start out the season. This offense is going to look completely different. Is this sort of by design? is this a team that's going to be incredibly play action heavy? Because when I look at it, it's sort of a Arthur Smith's going to run the ball a ton. They're going to take play auction shots to D.K. Metcalf continually. Am I seeing this differently than you are?
Starting point is 00:16:48 No, you're right. I mean, even last year, they ranked sixth in pass rate over expectation, six lowest, sorry. So, I mean, they are a team that's not going to throw the ball a lot. I think they ranked sixth in overall dropbacks. They were, you know, bottom five in yards, passing yards per game. So this is definitely a team that wants to run the football. They want to set up those play action shots. So yeah, the thing, the wild card is if it's Aaron Rogers,
Starting point is 00:17:14 he's a guy who traditionally likes to throw the ball a little bit more. So maybe he gets Arthur Smith to loosen up a little bit. But like the volume's just not going to be huge. So, you know, I think D.K. Metcalf is a big winner, but I'm not sure about the rest of the guys. Yeah, it's a D.K. Metcalfe. Let's unpack him because I think this is the clear winner here. Four year, $132 million contract for DK.
Starting point is 00:17:38 And Brett, DK is just running pure this entire offseason. He escapes Jackson Smith and Jigba in Seattle, a hundred catch player entering year three, who we would have comfortably projected to clearly out-target DK once again, have a much higher target share. Like, escapes JSN, ends up in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh gives him this incredible contract, a 27-year-old wide receiver, D.K. Metcalfe, sort of gets a secondary lease on life and a secondary dynasty like outlook when he gets this new landing spot and this contract installation.
Starting point is 00:18:15 Now he escapes George Pickens, a wide receiver who did have some overlapping skill sets and was just dominant in every metric for Pittsburgh last year, including first read rate. So, D.K, what an offseason for him. Then we start looking at his potential role. We haven't seen a wide receiver hit even 125 targets in an Arthur Smith-led offense ever. A.J. Brown didn't do it. Drake London didn't do it. George Pickens didn't do it. And I don't think that D.K. Metcalf is going to do it. But I think that this is going to be a low-volume pass attack. And I think target share-wise, D.K. Metcalf is set to have his tie.
Starting point is 00:18:56 target share since that 2022 season, which is the last time we saw him in that 25, 26% target share. So I, without looking at Chris's projections, I'm going to say somewhere around 115 to 120 targets. I'm going to say target share of 26%. Am I anywhere close to what Chris has? Say those numbers again? I predicted a 26% target share and I said 100% percent. 18 targets. I think you're pretty close.
Starting point is 00:19:31 Oh, good. There we go. Yeah, Chris is projecting a wide receiver 17 output. So that's a nice, strong wide receiver two. Obviously, you already unpacked it on the pickings projections, but we're talking fractional points separating these guys. So even if he has one better game than you think he could jump to wide receiver 13, Like that's how tight these projections are right now.
Starting point is 00:19:58 So, yeah, I mean, he goes up for sure. The efficiency should be back for DK. And that's really what he's held his hat on, right? His whole career in Seattle is efficiency. And so I think this offense is perfect for him, honestly. Yeah, D.K. Metcalf, like, this has been a player where the market has been very, very, like, low on him. Despite this obvious role, he's wide receiver 30 right now in FFPC. So we are absolutely flag planning you to go and draft some Dak Prescott, also draft some DK.K. Metcalf here.
Starting point is 00:20:31 D.K. Meckoff, I think, is going to get all he can handle. And then we also have like some question marks about how they're going to utilize their running backs. Like, does Caleb Johnson get the exact same Najee Harris 270 carry role that we're used to seeing? Does Jalen Warren get a tick up? Like, I think there's a lot to unpack here. And I don't even think Pittsburgh has that completely figured out. This could be a true running back committee. This could end up being Caleb Johnson getting an elevated role. Like I don't, I don't know which way this is going to go. I think that there is a multiple ways that this could kind of end up. What's your gut feel for the running game situation in Pittsburgh right now, Brett?
Starting point is 00:21:10 I think the bulk of the running work's going to go to Caleb, the Nagey role. I think what gets scary is the passing down stuff because I know your guy who, I think you like Jalen Warren, but they did bring in a Kenneth Gainwell, who's a pass-down specialist. They already have Cordela Patterson on the roster who obviously is very effective in the past game. So I don't know, that whole part gets messy. I think the easy, clean projection is Caleb Johnson as the early down grinder. But after that, man, I don't know. That's a really hard one for me.
Starting point is 00:21:38 I'll leave that to you guys to figure out. Yeah, so like Caleb, you're not getting any sort of discounts. You're having to draft him as a low end RB2 right now. Jalen, it's a little bit like, it's a little bit like when Arthur Smith had Cordarral Patterson and Tyler Algear in Atlanta. and then it ended up being like a ton of Al Jir over the second half of the season. He had a thousand rushing yards. I think early on in the year, those drafters who draft Caleb Johnson at running back 24 are just going to have to be a little bit patient.
Starting point is 00:22:08 I think that first month, six weeks of the season could be really annoying before they fully unleashed the young rookie running back. But yeah, I mean, Caleb's definitely the best bet there, but he's also the most expensive. Warren's been an RB2 there two seasons ago has a really, he's a small. or back, but he's a very violent runner, very physical runner. And Warren really, his, his way to win fantasy-wise this year is to absorb the lion's share of those Najee Harris targets on top of his own target share. So let's talk about a secondary winner in Pittsburgh. Like, does this, is this a boost for Pat Friarmouth? One thing that we have seen in Arthur Smith-led offenses is tight end production.
Starting point is 00:22:53 obviously in Atlanta it was Johnu Smith and Kyle Pitts those guys we couldn't really predict which week they were going to the shine it was mostly Johnu that year but this could this be a Fryermuth has a slight bounce back or you want a Calvin Austin a Roman Wilson
Starting point is 00:23:10 or could there be more targets for the running backs? How do we unpack this? Yeah I think Frymuth for sure gets a little bit of a bump Chris Wecht is projecting me as tight in 11 now so he's sliding into that low end, tight end, tight end one range. But I think the sneaky winner here is Calvin Austin, man. And I know we're still only projecting him as wide receiver 68, but his tape is phenomenal.
Starting point is 00:23:32 He's a guy I fell in love with going back to his year at the senior bowl where he absolutely dominated. I thought he was fantastic last year. And it was a really low volume offense, which it's still going to be. So I don't know that the ceiling is much higher than what we saw last year. But in Dynasty right now, Calvin Austin is absolutely free, for the most part. At least he was until this morning. morning where you could get him for a, you know, a fourth round pick or a future fourth round pick. And I like the bet there. I think he's a really talented kid. And he really came on down
Starting point is 00:24:02 the stretch last year. So I think Calvin Austin is the sneaky winner here. Yeah. So Calvin Austin obviously has elite speed, can get downfield. I don't know. Like the guy is, fantasy wise, I don't necessarily see him being viable. Roman Wilson, do you have any hope for him? because I think there's a lot of Roman Wilson enthusiasts, also really impressive player at the Senior Bowl, and was a third round pick for Pittsburgh last year, two seasons ago. Obviously dealt with some injuries, his rookie season. And Mike Tomlin talked about that with Roman Wilson, sort of like missed a lot of reps type guy. And this is sort of his de facto rookie year. Any hope for Wilson?
Starting point is 00:24:44 For sure. I mean, he missed all of rookie minicamp. Then he missed all of training camp. He was a healthy scratch for the first five. weeks because he hadn't practiced with the team and then he blew out his hamstring so uh yeah i'm for sure he was a top 50 player on my board last year i love roman wilson i think the the part i struggle with with his projection is the low volume pass offense the fact that calvin austin has already established there's some overlap there smaller you know speed vertical elements from the slot i know they both
Starting point is 00:25:13 can play on the outside as well but um so the overlap with austin and then if they really wanted to stamp that vote of confidence on Roman Wilson, it seems like you probably don't bring in a Robert Woods. It's like a little bit of an insurance play there. Now, maybe they do love, I don't know. I haven't talked to the coaching staff, but maybe they do love Roman Wilson and Woods is just there as the wide receiver four for backup purposes.
Starting point is 00:25:36 But it just, that gives me a little hesitation. If they didn't sign Robert Woods, I'd be like that, this is a stamp of confidence on Roman Wilson. I mean, he was a third round pick by this regime. So I don't know, but I'm a little more hesitant with Roman as I am Calvin. So we talked about Chris Wex projections for D.K. Metcalfe. Give us a Pat Firemuth projection as well. Yeah, tight end 11 for Frymermouth. So that's a massive win right there. If Frymermans and how many catches is he projecting him for? 60. So 60 catches for Pat Frymermouth,
Starting point is 00:26:08 tight end 11. You're talking about a real value right now in FFPC. He's tight end 19 on FFPC right now. So in tight end premium, 60 catches makes a huge difference. And this could be a mooth season. So DK. Metcalf, we absolutely want you to go draft them, draft as much as possible. Draft as much Dak Prescott as possible, especially in best ball. And George Pickens, I'm giving you a dynasty stamp of approval. Go ahead and go get yourself some George Pickens.
Starting point is 00:26:37 If your league mates have the question marks that Brett Whitefield does. Brett, what do you have coming out rest of the week? Yeah, check out First Read podcast.
