What's up, everyone? Welcome to Hard Count. I'm your host, Wes Huber, representing my guys at FantasyPoints.com. It's been a few weeks.
Fresh off of a brief furlough of relaxation and recuperation, we're back better than ever and refresh for the long haul.
With training camp in full swing, it's high time to get started on some dynasty adjustments.
You know, the information that's going to be passed along, it may not fulfill everyone's hopes and dreams.
But we need to deal with it nonetheless.
At quarterback, you know, it really pays to keep blinders attached to avoid all types of drama off the field that will play no role whatsoever to what actually happens on the field.
Deshawn Watson, I'm not picking his side.
That's not my job.
And, you know, his suspension has been delivered.
There's no update on whether there's going to be an appeal yet.
I'm assuming there's not.
They're just going to deal with it.
Everyone's going to move on from this situation.
And after he serves his time, this Cleveland offense is going to be full go.
You want to go out and buy Deshawn Watson right now in case Superflex owners are butt hurt.
over the six-game suspension.
I mean, that's nothing.
We're still seeing Alvin Kamara drafted,
and, you know, it looks like his entire situation is going to be delayed quite a while.
But with Watson, I mean, we know what's going on here.
We get those six games out of the way, and we get back a kid that's got top five QB potential.
It's not something that we need to pass up.
someone that's still holding ill feelings towards the situation.
Really, do we even care as it relates to fantasy?
No.
So if you can get your hands on Watson and a Superflex at any type of a discount, you definitely want to do it.
By the way, in Seattle, Drew Locke passed along that he was glad that he was able to throw
some passes to D.K. Metcalf prior to training camp, because now that he's actually on the field,
he's been playing with the twos strictly. Gino Smith is the clear QB1 here. Drink. No news there.
In Washington, Carson Wentz into day three with three interceptions. That,
is not what the commanders fans were hoping to hear.
It's okay.
We shouldn't hit the panic button.
Carson Wentz, he's not a franchise quarterback.
We know that.
But he has his talents.
And he's a consistent player when he's healthy.
He puts everything on the line.
Not saying I go out and draft him on all my dynasty rosters.
I definitely don't do that.
Like I said, he's not a cornerstone quarterback.
But he better get those interceptions out of his system quickly.
We'll end up seeing Sam Howell much sooner than expected.
I don't think that's going to happen.
I think that they're invested in Carson Wince.
He's going to be the starter all year.
Now, of course, they come out 0 and 6.
We're going to see somebody making some tough decisions.
But Wince is going to be okay.
I'm not worried about Wince, whereas some guys,
I'll talk about in a minute.
I'm a little worried about.
So it finally sounds as though teammates and the populace alike
have got with the program
and have realized that Davis Mills is a quality quarterback.
Deal with it.
That took much longer than expected.
Davis Mills was the top rookie quarterback last year.
No, it wasn't Mac Jones.
Mac Jones was good.
Don't get me wrong. Davis Mills was better. In the games where he started, he was a better
quarterback. We had the whole Tyrod Taylor thing, and I don't know what was going on there with
the prior regime. But when they actually devoted the offense to Davis Mills, look, Davis Mills
did not have the defense or the offensive line or the ground game that Mack Jones had.
Mac Jones was, he was just, he was just the driver of what was going on around him.
This is, this is a situation where Davis Mills, this kid's going to ball out.
Daniel Jones, in that entire quarterback room for Pittsburgh,
have been very, very bad.
Danny, brother, ill-advised first rounder.
Same deal in Pittsburgh.
any picket should not have been selected in the first round.
He has first round hair.
I'll give him that.
Everything else.
It took him seven years to learn the system with the Panthers.
He's not going to get it anytime soon for the Steelers.
It's going to be sitting on the bench.
Yes, he just got moved up to QB2 over Mason Rudolph.
It was a paper move.
It had nothing to do with his play.
He's a, they, they drafted him in the first round.
They have to move him up.
But it looks like they're going to go into the season with Mitchell Tribusky
just because he's the best of the rest.
I mean, what else are they going to start?
Daniel Jones, dude, your, your, your days as a franchise quarterbacker over.
You don't even deserve to be a starter in the NFL.
You may still, you may get a year or two as a starter, as a placeholder in the future.
But you're, you're,
days. They're coming, man. QB2, backup, clipboard. And the other side, Justin Fields,
two atago Vialoa. Man, they have been very, very good. Fields looks like he's put on 20 pounds of muscle.
Tagavialoa, he's out here tossing dimes, 50 air yards. I'm telling you people, no excuses, no apologies,
deal with it.
At running back, what do we do with Miles Sanders?
The clear-cut number one back on a team with a top two offensive line,
an offense that just traded for the most physical wide receiver in the game.
And to top it off, the Eagles play the second easiest schedule this season.
I still think Phillies should invest in one of the top 23 draft runs.
running backs and push Sanders into a number two role.
But that doesn't mean that they will.
My main concern with Sanders are all the injuries that have piled up, pushing him into
a complementary change of pace role.
They'll still have his explosive athleticism, and they just won't have to rely on him
for the full load.
But Sanders is the guy until he's.
isn't. Boston Scott,
I think he could handle the role, but it doesn't seem like
Philly is invested in him in that type
of involvement.
But Sanders, he is set
to blow up this season.
If he stays healthy and capitalizes,
he'll cement his status
as the Eagles RB1.
Kenneth Gainwell,
he is exactly what we
thought he was when he was drafted. A receiving specialist. Don't get lost in that smoke.
Deal with it. Not going to say I told you so, but Doug Peterson released his first offensive
death chart and James Robinson is listed as the RB1. We're still going to hear all of the
arguments saying that Travis E.T.N. is going to catch 90 passes. He's
going to be, he's going to be the next great Hall of Fame running back.
Dude hadn't even taken a carry, an NFL carry, and people are proclaiming him the next
it.
I mean, he's going to do well.
Just don't count on anything more than a 50% share of carries and just toss those bloated
reception totals out the window.
Make sure it's clear that Jay Rob is going to.
to be the featured early down and short yardage back when he's cleared.
Nobody, I repeat, nobody in the medical field is versed on the recovery expectations from Achilles
tears at individual positions for high-level athletes.
Deal with it.
You can acquire Robinson for next to nothing.
now due to the flawed guest expectations online doctors are tossing around and freaking everyone out about.
Oh my goodness, Cam Acres, his career is over. Oh no, J. Rob, he's done. Oh, but wait, these
franchises, they're still featuring these guys. They're not done. You don't know what you
are talking about. Baltimore is smack in the middle.
of the pack concerning its scheduled 22 run defenses.
But they do have themselves a sexy fantasy playoff schedule.
J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards, they're going to be fine. Yes, they're on the pup.
They can come off very soon. They're going to be fine. Don't freak out.
But the Southeastern Conference, they made the mistake.
of overlooking Tyler Beatty
in a satellite mold last year.
If you played CFF
College Fantasy,
you know what Tyler Beatty did.
This dude was unstoppable.
That's not a mistake I'm going to make.
He doesn't pack the girth
to consistently attack the interior.
But his patient footwork
fits perfectly into the Ravens Gap scheme.
He's going to find a lot of lanes to the outside with pulling guards and tackles.
If Beatty were to get onto the field,
Gus Edwards, I mean, I'm not saying he's done.
No, no, he's not.
He's a good running back.
We just need to understand that he's not the age.
of Dobbins and and Beatty here. I mean, these guys are are very young. Edwards is getting up there.
So Beatty is definitely a stash right now. Yeah, I'm not feeling the Steelers right now. I'm I'm
ready to hit the panic button. Tribisky you know, you should have followed Brian
Daibold because the Steelers, they looked pretty bad last year. Their offense, their
offensive line is just terrible.
I'm not going to compare it to the bears or anything, but the situation has gotten so bad.
I mean, yeah, when Chase Claypole gets back on the field from his shoulder injury,
it's going to be better for the quarterbacks.
I mean, but stop it with the George Pickin's stuff.
The guy is not going to have a breakout year.
I like pickings, but everything that he does right has been a liability so far through training camp.
There is a learning curve for players.
Even the most elite receivers are going to hit that learning curve.
I mean, just go back half a decade ago, and we didn't see young kids like this thrust into these starting roles at wide receiver.
There was that three-year deal with wide receivers, and there's a big reason for that.
It's a pretty big step up in competition, even from the SEC to the NFL.
And watching Najee Harris tweak his foot recently only highlights how badly Pittsburgh needs an RB2 to step forward.
The Steelers, on the other hand,
they annually field one of the highest inside zone rushing schemes.
We're talking like top two.
Enter Jalen Warren from Oklahoma State, undrafted free agent.
Warren didn't have the opportunity to run inside much with Oklahoma State.
They're an outside zone offense.
but he's been a standout recently using his low center of gravity and north-south power
skill set. Keep an eye on Jalen Warren. If Naji were to go down, this offense, it has no choice
but to feed the run. They don't have the offensive line to protect the quarterback.
They have to run forward. They have no other.
choice. I'm even downgrading
Deontay Johnson. The only guy
in the offense I'm not downgrading
is Pat Friermuth. Just because
of the routes he runs,
all the crossing routes.
He just presents himself so
quickly to the quarterback. He'll
be fine. Everyone else,
including Najee, I'm
just, I don't see how this
offense is going to work.
Let's move over to wide receiver.
You know,
it's pretty telling here.
With neither Russell Gage nor Julio Jones participating in special teams drills,
the skill on special teams is likely to determine the final two to three wide receiver spots in Tampa Bay.
And that's going to be broken up between Cyril Grayson, Jalen Darden, Tyler Johnson,
Scotty Miller,
Rashad Perryman,
Devin Tompkins,
and Jareth Stearns.
That's a lot of names for two,
maybe three spots.
Now, Saro Grayson,
he proved last season
that he has just game-breaking speed.
It's a detail that they just don't have
as far as a backup.
with any of those other guys.
Maybe Scotty Miller,
but, you know, he's been so banged up.
Jalen Darden now,
he doesn't have a lot of straight line speed,
but he's a quick guy.
You know,
I'm not trying to knock his abilities.
I definitely like him.
Rashad Barryman,
if he sticks on this roster,
man,
his dad must be pulling strings for him.
I know that's not true.
But, I mean,
Brashton Barryman's just been terrible.
I like Devin Tompkins,
quite a bit. So Darden, Tompkins, Miller, Giovanni Bernard, and Ken John Barner appear to be vying
for punt return duties. If we see Darden, Tompkins, or Miller come away with that job,
then we'll have one of those roles or one of those wide receiver spots filled. I tend to think
that Grayson is going to take another one. So that leaves one.
left over and they've just been so bullish on Tyler Johnson.
I mean, they're probably going to keep him.
So does that mean Jalen Darden's on the outs?
Scotty Miller?
I mean, these guys are going to sign with somebody.
And, you know, Chris Godwin, it looks like he's going to be back much earlier than expected.
And yes, Julio is now in the fold.
If that's enough to convince some that Russell Gage,
should be downgraded. Go out and get him right now. I mean,
Julio is on his last legs. Deal with it. He's only
in Tampa to sell tickets to the Julio faithful. And the presence of a sub-100%
health, which I'm assuming from Godwin, at least early on in this season,
that's only going to boost Gage's numbers and the rapport that he builds with Tom Brady.
But they need somebody on the outside office at Mike Evans.
Gage makes all of them better.
He's going to eat, my friends.
Deal with it.
Russell Gage is still a buy for me.
After signing a one year,
$1.1 million deal in March,
James Washington only just returned to the field
after having his foot in a boot during all of minicamp and OTAs.
Yeah.
He fractured his right foot.
It's going to require surgery.
Dallas is fearing he'll miss up to 10 weeks.
Short of bringing in a veteran,
the boys will enter the season starting CD Lamb,
who has been just phenomenal, by the way.
Jalen Tolbert.
And then it's going to be a three-way competition
or it might just be a rotation between T.J. Vashor, Simi Fahoko, and or Noah Brown.
It also presents as an intriguing setup for undrafted free agents, Chiquari Roberson,
Ty Fryfogel, Donterio Drummond, and recently signed USFL MVP Cavante Turpin.
to sneak in and secure a roster spot.
By the way, the camp clips that showcase CD working,
he's a different guy than we saw last year.
You can see examples of him just having his way with Anthony Brown,
Jordan Lewis, multiple times against Malik Hooker.
And another guy, Joe Dahl.
Dolan's insider contact can't say enough about Vashar.
Vashar was measured with 96th percentile height,
100th percentile arms, and 100th percentile wingspan,
wingspan at the combine, and that's among wide receivers from the last 10 seasons.
He's a guy that we need to be thinking about,
especially in deep formats.
It's unbelievable that Alan Lazard went undrafted in 2018.
He landed on Jacksonville's practice squad.
And when the Packers stole him away, they didn't, they cut him.
They didn't even keep him the following year.
Lazzar, he did end up getting his roster spot.
Aaron Rogers went out on limb and vouched for him and got him to bring him back.
I mean, his path to being Mr. Rogers' new number one is a true Cinderella story.
I mean, he's talking about wanting to be the best player in the NFL, best wide receiver in the NFL.
Man, where he's going in drafts, if he pulls that off, geez, what a value.
if he even becomes a top 20 wide receiver,
which he's going to with Aaron Rogers supporting him,
I mean, the value is off the charts right now.
Romeo Dubs has taken full advantage of Christian Watson's knee
and Sammy Watkins's hamstring injuries
to join Lazard on the field with,
the starters at the beginning of practices.
And he's returned that trust with at least three touchdown receptions through three days of camp.
It appears Amari Rogers is still spending much of his time on special teams.
He did catch a touchdown pass, but he's not getting big time reps here.
Dobbs' stock is white hot at the moment.
So, yeah, down south, if your team is only a wide receiver piece away from contention,
can't guard Mike is looking good right now on the field.
Let's not forget this guy was on a path to being an all-time great when he hurt his ankle.
Michael Thomas is not somebody we need to sleep on.
Yeah, he's older, I get that.
But, I mean, he's been out of commission a couple of years.
He's got plenty of gas in the tank.
A couple of names that we need to stash away for preseason DFS.
Jay Lamour and Baltimore's looked pretty good.
To Too-2 Atwell with Van Jefferson having knee surgery.
Don't forget Atwell runs low four-threes.
And he's going to be in competition with wide receiver, tight-in, tweener,
Jacob Harris, the kid that, that,
played soccer most of his life and then decided yeah i'll i'll try football out football out and then
yeah nobody knows what to do with him quite yet so we'll see back to washington more soft tissue
tweaks for curtis samuel the kid just can't keep those legs intact to show off his four three one
speed even when he returns though samuel is not a threat to jahan dotson's
workload. Dotson is comfortably locked in.
While J.D. McKissick is the guy who would suffer from Samuel's return to the lineup.
Okay, let's pump the breaks on all pro aspirations for Brandon IUC three days into training
camp. Getting off to a fast start, though, don't get me wrong. Certainly a plus for IUC after
last season. However, Dibaut.
just signed his big deal and has spent the last couple of days conditioning,
just getting his body back to where he wants it.
The pecking order for the targets in San Francisco have not changed.
I promise you.
It's Debo, it's kiddle.
Then it's Ayyuk.
That's not going anywhere.
Ayuk is not Trey Lance's favorite target.
That is nonsense.
That's headline horror stuff.
Okay, don't say that.
Don't say that.
Kiddle caught a touchdown pass.
Don't say that stuff.
Another guy that needs a lot more fantasy press.
Veles Jones Jr. deal with it.
He's been electric.
Each day at camp,
and we'll have a direct path to the starting job in the interior.
Matt Ryan, he's not much of a dynasty asset right now.
But that doesn't mean he won't be able to feed Michael Pittman and Paris Campbell to career years with the hands-down easiest schedule this season.
And I'm getting a lot of questions asking me, should I trade Jonathan Taylor?
Please don't bring those questions to me.
Absolutely not.
You don't trade Jonathan Taylor.
is the most dominant player in the game right now.
I mean, it's just ridiculous.
Moving on to Tide-in.
Tyler Davis continues to be featured.
Robert Tunyon, he's rehabilitating that knee.
Davis could turn out to be a decent end of the bench stash,
the experience he's gaining from this opportunity.
I mean, you don't get into this,
into this role with Aaron Rogers
without showcasing some stability
at the position and he's only 25.
Tyler Davis is a name to think about
if you have a roster spot.
Cole Turner
is getting some run right now as well
in Washington. A lot of Washington news, by the way.
Logan Thomas, John Bates. They're tending to their wounds.
Okay, let's calm down. Nobody's wearing pads.
Cole Turner caught a couple of touchdowns and red zone drills.
He's like seven foot four.
It's not going to win him anything.
The guy, he's going to get muscled off the ball.
He's too small right now.
He needs functional strength.
It's going to take time.
If Washington were to go into the season,
without Logan Thomas or John Bates,
they wouldn't be starting Cole Turner.
And if they did, they wouldn't be doing it for very long.
They would bring in a veteran to fill the role that can stand his ground.
Cole Turner's not ready for that.
It doesn't mean I don't like him.
And the opportunity is certainly a plus for his development.
That's it for this edition.
