It's time to the Fantasy Points podcast brought to you by FantasyPoint.com.
Top level fantasy football and NFL betting analysis from every perspective and angle,
from numbers to the film room with a single goal to help you score more fantasy points.
All across the fantasy universe, welcome everybody to the bank account of Jalen Hertz.
Just kidding.
It's the two-point stance powered by FantasyPoints.com.
What's up, everybody? Brian Drake at Drake Fantasy on Twitter, joined alongside managing editor of the aforementioned website, Mr. Joe Dolan on Twitter at FG underscore Dolan.
This is fun today because as you guys are waking up, you are reading the news, you're digesting the magnitude of this Jalen Hertz contract.
Well, that might not have been the case a few years ago. We weren't all on the Jalen Hertz train.
Joe and I would raise our hands and say, you know, maybe we maybe we weren't.
is happy when Howie Roseman pulled the trigger on draft night a few nights back. But the Eagles
did pony up on Monday to the tune of $255 million, five-year extension, Joe, that includes
$179.3 million guaranteed. That is $51 million of average annual value currently making it
the largest in history. That will not stand, of course, as Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert and
Mar Jackson contracts are still to come, but that's what makes it smart for the Eagles,
get it done now.
What do you think before we get into making fun of ourselves for our old takes,
what do you think is getting this deal done right now?
Well, first and foremost, that is the point of this podcast, Drake, because who doesn't
love when a couple of chuckleheads who are hilariously wrong about something have
to be, are forced to eat their crow.
And we will get to that.
But again, it's just smart business by Howie Roseman.
They were going to have to pay Jaylon Hertz.
The sooner they do it, the cheaper it is.
And I mean cheaper in the complete, like, you know, quotation marks kind of meaning because it's not cheap at all.
But Joe Burrow is going to get paid.
Justin Herbert is going to get paid.
And this cycle repeats itself.
It's why you and I, we chopped it up on Twitter a little bit earlier today.
And of course, the first reaction is, Jalen Hurd Scott, what?
this is insane and every quarterback deal looks insane until the next one comes along when
Patrick Mahomes signed his what $500 million dealer whatever it was before the structure came out
oh my oh my oh they're going to be able to build a roster and all of a sudden Patrick Mahomes
is like what fifth sixth in average annual cap hit right now jalen Hertz might be third or
fourth in average annual cap hit he's number one right now but he might be third or fourth in that
metric by the time the season kicks off
Howie Roseman did Jalen Hertz a solid.
Jalen Hertz is a very, very, very, very rich man.
There's a no trade clause in this contract, which is interesting,
given what happened after the last time the Eagles signed a quarterback to a record-breaking extension.
But I think that shows the Eagles belief in Jalen Hertz.
From a fantasy football perspective, because this typically is a fantasy football show,
it locks in somebody who's going to be a top 30 pick in fantasy football leagues
in one quarterback leagues and has a legitimate case to be the number one.
overall pick in Super Flex League.
So it's a great team, a great fit.
Credit to Jalen Hertz in every way imaginable.
Credit to Howie Roseman in every way imaginable.
I mean, this is like, this has been when the Eagles drafted Jalen Hertz,
and that will be the majority of this of this podcast, us eating our words.
I mean, what, I don't know if this was like a 99th,
percentile outcome, but certainly like what, 95 and above?
I mean, Jalen Hertz was a second round pick.
If this was an expected outcome, Jalen Hertz, I mean, at this point, you could argue,
there's a Jalen Hertz Justin Herbert argument to be made.
Now, try to separate what the two did, like the popular perception of the two.
because look, Justin Herbert, and I'm guilty of it too, Justin Herbert's electric.
And, you know, when you hear his passes hit the hands of his receivers, you realize how
different the dude is. And he's got more physical ability than Jalen Hertz.
But Jalen Hertz is a more accomplished player than Justin Herbert on the field.
Joe Burrow is a little bit more accomplished than Jalen Hertz.
He's been to a Super Bowl and has also won playoff games in other years, but he's also older than
Jalen Hertz. There's no Jailen Hurts to a Tonga by Loh argument right now.
Given where their careers got started and how these two have been kind of married for five years, there's no argument right now.
Getting back to the point, if you redo that draft, Jalen Hertz is the top three pick of draft.
And that tells you the fact that he was the second round pick that this was not an expected outcome.
Just an amazing story for Jalen Hertz, an amazing story for his agent, for his entire team of his,
agent, his marketing specialist, everybody is a woman on Jalen Hertz's team, which makes him
unique in that regard. This is the biggest contract ever negotiated by a woman agent.
And it's just an unbelievable story from top to bottom. I did not expect this to happen,
as my words in the past have certainly made completely evident, Drake. I mean, and it was quiet,
too. Like, you knew it was coming. As an Eagles fan, people were like, oh, they're going, they can go
get Buddha Baker and they can go trade for this guy.
And they go, no, they can't.
They don't have any money.
They got to pay Jalen Hertz.
Once this gets squared away, now the picture clears up a little bit.
You can go, okay, we got money for A.J. Brown.
We can see what it's going to cost for Hertz now.
The next thought is going to be DeVantz Smith's going to have to get paid.
So we'll see things clear up for the Eagles now.
But the reason, Joe, what are you going to do, not pay Hertz, right?
Like, like, you have to.
You know, this is why, but like, it's the thing is, it's, it's a little.
why I didn't scoff at the Daniel Jones deal because, yeah, I think, you know, I think a lot of
people argue Daniel Jones is mid, as the kids say these days. But you know what? Quarterbacks
who can do what Daniel Jones can do get paid. Kurt Cousins gets paid. I mean, it's it's always going
to happen. Jalen Hertz is above that tier. That's why he got money above that tier.
So let's get into what we said back four years ago when Jalen Hertz was drafted. And I will still
stand by this, folks, excuse me, as I fight through a cold here, is the reason myself as a fantasy
analyst and more so Philadelphia Eagles fan didn't like the move was because you had just
handed Carson Wentz four years $129 million. By the way, four years later, this deal is nearly
double that. It shows you how fast the price goes up on quarterbacks. But the Eagles had other
needs in the draft, specifically safety.
I believe Jeremy Chin was available.
It was a pretty good safety they could have had.
They still need a safety going into this year's draft.
So that's where I was pretty upset with thinking you need other options.
How he came out after the fact he goes, we're a quarterback factory.
You remember that line?
And we always want to have a high end backup.
And Jeffrey Lurie was so upset years prior when they missed out on Russell Wilson.
And I remember him saying, Joe,
he thought that he saw Russell Wilson in Jalen Hertz and he wasn't going to make that mistake again.
So, hey, good on him and what we'll do is we'll break down.
You've got an article first.
I believe you wrote for FantasyPoint.com.
I got to hear what you said.
We'll kind of go in segments here and we'll break down the good parts.
And then I've got a video that I did, you know, how the kids do these hot take reaction videos.
This will be cringeworthy to say the least.
All right.
It started just helpful.
Okay.
So I wrote it. It was the very innocuously titled column Tuesday Talking Points Week 13,
our SEO guy probably would hang me from a ceiling right now to seeing that being the title
when it was basically just one big rip fest on Howie Roseman and Jalen Hertz. And not to read the
entire thing because I went probably over 2,000 words here, but starting out, the Philadelphia Eagles
are broken. That's not something you do.
need me to tell you and I would suspect fans of teams like the lions or Browns would roll their
eyes that the whales of the Philly Faithhole given the birds raised a Lombardi trophy just three
seasons ago. But the Eagles collapse is one that feels so different than just a bad franchise
going through the motions of failure. It's so extreme and so unnecessary. And then I get into
Carson Wentz a little bit. Let's start with Wentz. He's the easiest one to blame after all.
He's the face of the franchise and he's the guy going out there every week getting sacked,
missing throws, and turning the ball over. He was given a
a $128 million contract.
There is a multitude of excuses to be made for him,
and we'll get to them, but he has to be better.
Full stop.
There's absolutely no one in the galaxy who would deny that,
Wentz chief among them.
Maybe Wentz would deny that,
given what we know about Carson Wentz now.
He's been one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL
by every reasonable metric and the eye test this year,
and that's an apocalyptic collapse from someone who was going to be an MVP
at this point three years ago and is still in his 20s.
And then it gets into trying to contextualize,
Wences Wences Struggles, which I still think are some valid points, but they really ring hollow following what happened with Jalen Hurts.
And then I get into this.
I have never been more wrong in my life, and this is the tastiest crow I'm ever going to eat.
I did not expect we would get two Jeremy Chin references on this podcast, but we are going to.
We might get Jerry Chin on the podcast.
We should.
And then that brings us to the real elephant in the room.
Jalen Hertz.
The Eagles took Hertz in the second round of the 22.
NFL draft. He was the 53rd overall pick. That is not a throwaway pick. The Eagles reportedly were
considering drafting safety Jeremy Chin, who might be the frontrunner for the defensive rookie of the
year before settling on Hertz. Still, the Eagles drafted Hertz just 10 months after they signed
Wentz to his monster extension and just three months after Wentz and Peterson led the Eagles to the
playoffs with almost quite literally no wide receivers. Why? Oh, this is painful.
Roseman might have an answer for that, but at this point, I wouldn't expect the answer to be
anything but awash with arrogance. Yikes, stolen. The Occam's razor reasoning for the Hertz pick is that
the Eagles had doubts about Wentz. Wences play this year certainly would justify that point of
view. But if they had any doubts about Wentz, why did they sign him to a $128 million deal in June of
2019? And what happened in that 2019 season, given Wences strong play down the stretch, that would change
that. If the Eagles were so worried about Wents's injuries, why did they extend them in the first place?
Did the cheap shot, I referenced earlier a cheap shot from Chedavion Clowny in the Seahawks.
Oh, awful. That's why the Eagles will never sign him. That's, did that change so much in their minds?
Wentz, as any competitive person in his position would be, was reportedly frustrated by the Hertz pick
because he finally felt like his 2019 play allowed him to shout down the should have kept Foles
choir. And while Wence should block that noise out, again,
There's the red flags here are adding up.
And it's entirely possible he's looking over his shoulder.
Roseman created a quarterback controversy months after Wentz ended one.
Boy, was I proud of that line at the time.
But I'll say this.
You're not wrong.
Your thought process, you know, what was that old adage?
Process over results?
You hear that out there in fantasy all the time.
They had a quarterback.
They thought was a franchise.
quarterback and Carson Wentz.
I mean, we don't know all the ins and outs at the time of, you know,
maybe everyone in the locker room hates his guts and he's just a douchebag.
But, I mean, this is a guy, Joe, who just put the team on his back and took him to
Super Bowl, you know, he was supposed to be the guy.
You drafted him second overall.
You traded heaven and earth to get him.
This, yeah, but first and foremost, I think process over results is a case.
use too much as a crutch because if you say process over results there's like an underlying
there's an underlying kind of river that runs through that phrase that assumes the process is right
that's a great point and i'm with you too it's it is a crutched used by people who get a lot of
things wrong although it is true right it does say well it's like the um it's like the
the character, I'm not a Simpsons guy, but obviously the Simpsons impact on internet memes is
obvious. It's like, is it me? No, it's the children who are wrong. Like, there's still a little
bit of that when I hear process over results that bothers me a little bit. But I want to point out
that the most intelligent thing I think ever written about Jalen Hertz was written by Kevin
Cole erstwhile of pro football focus. And he wrote this.
the day after they drafted Jalen Hertz in 2020.
Ooh, that's here.
And, and, and I mean, this is,
Kevin has every single right to just plaster.
This should be his pin tweet.
This should be, he should have this as the wallpaper in his house.
Just like the column, just like, just like all over,
just to remind his friends and loved ones how prescient this piece was.
April 20th, 2020 by Kevin Cole.
This is Pro Football Focus.
The, the title of the pieces,
because Jalen Hertz wasn't a good pick by the Philadelphia Eagles.
He was a great one.
One of the most controversial selections of the 2020 NFL draft
was the Philadelphia Eagles taking quarterback Jalen Hertz in the second round
with the 53rd overall selection.
The Eagles already have Carson Wentz as their putative franchise quarterback,
who at 27 years old and recently signed to a $128 million contract
superficially fits the definition to a T.
Eagles fans and beatwriters have a number of emotions on the Hertz pick,
mostly ranging from confused to downright disturbed.
Further complicating feelings around the Hearst Picker comparisons to Tason Hill and the focus on his role is a high value backup like Nick Foles.
While Hertz could be a rich man's hill or a stud backup, those should be thought of as secondary and tertiary benefits of the selection.
So you remember a lot of the discussion about Jalen Hertz and all the reporting, our guy Kaplan said this, Jeff McLean has said this.
People we know who cover the Eagles were like, oh, they drafted him to be a backup.
They did. Everyone said.
I just, maybe that is the line they were feeding to everybody.
I still have a hard time believing it.
What if two weeks from now at the NFL draft, I mean, it's one week from now at this point,
what of the Eagles at 10 at 30?
What if a quarterback's available?
And it's a best player on the board.
Are they going to take?
Hey, we're going to get a solid backup here.
Anthony Richardson falls to 10 overall.
No one's taking the pick.
Yeah.
Would they take them?
Go, ah, you know, we'll develop them as a backup.
This is the same thing we just thought four years ago.
What about 30?
What about it 30?
No.
Will Levis falls?
It's not happening because I'm telling you that all this talk that the Eagles took Jalen Hertz as a backup.
Maybe that was their ideal world scenario.
Carson Wentz becomes once again the MVP type of Carson Wentz.
and we have this protection in case Carson gets hurt.
Maybe that's what they thought was the best case scenario
because I don't think even the Eagles thought this was coming up.
But here's the thing, Drake.
You mentioned how I don't know what the exact quote was
with regards to Jalen Hertz vis-a-vis Russell Wilson, Howie, not making.
Did he ever act, did he say that?
Jeffrey Lurie said that.
Jeffrey Lurie said it, okay?
Yeah.
Why would you say that?
If you thought,
If your entire idea behind drafting Jalen Hurts was to draft the backup quarterback.
I think he saw a little Jalen Hertz.
Maybe the way that he's kind of short and squatty and he can run around a little bit and make plays deep down field with a big arm.
I don't know.
You know what I think else he likes about him is Jalen Hertz is a leader.
And people like Jalen Hertz.
One of my best friends, Mark called me or message me after this pick.
The deal happened.
and he shepter tweets it out.
And he goes, you know what?
I'm happy for you guys.
Giant Bears fan, right?
I mean, the guys, his whole life's been miserable.
They've never won a game.
But he goes, Jalen Hertz is a good dude.
He's like, I like him.
I liked him.
I liked him in Alabama.
Like, he just seems like a good guy to have on your team.
And I'm thinking about, I'm like, you know what?
In this day and age of, you know, you could have Draymond Green on your favorite team
or some other knucklehead that, you know, you just cringe when he, you know, says anything.
You look at Jalen Hertz.
you go, I'm glad my kid can wear a Jalen Hertz jersey and say like, hey, this guy's the face of my team.
Like that's kind of what you're paying for with these quarterbacks, you know, at some point.
And to say, hey, Jalen Hertz, now you are the face of Philadelphia.
Like, that's not a bad thing.
He's a really good dude.
So before we get into all the different ways Jalen Hertz made us wrong, Drake, and made the sustainable,
I've already prostrated myself on this, on this podcast.
You've got to do the same for you because I know you had you had some fire takes about about Jalen.
I did.
I mean, I can go back even recently when I said what last year I was like the Eagles should consider offering the Seahawks picks and Jalen Hertz at the trade deadline for Russell Wilson.
That would be awful.
People still come at me because I up and down and I don't deny this and I don't take it back.
All last year I said or the prior year, excuse me, I said when the Eagles went nine and seven.
and Hertz did lead them to a playoff game against Tampa Bay.
I said Jalen Hertz can't throw the football.
And I would say it week after week after week,
and I wasn't wrong.
Jalen Hertz couldn't throw the football two years ago.
He had a QBR of 48.5.
Okay?
Like, he was really bad.
You can go back and listen to guys who break down the tape.
You know, you can go back and listen to like a Greg Cosell.
He would say it all the time.
He doesn't process.
He doesn't throw to one side of the field.
You know, he doesn't throw guys open.
It was a very limited window that Jalen Hertz through to in terms of finding a receiver out there.
And he doesn't check the ball down.
He kind of still doesn't do that.
So to say Jalen Hertz wasn't a good passer in 2021, I wasn't lying.
Okay.
He took the step of steps to become second of the MVP.
For us to make fun of ourselves, not to try to justify ourselves.
I want to see, I want to see you in all your rage here, Dr.
All right.
I want to see it.
All right.
So if you're watching on YouTube, and again, why wouldn't you be?
It's YouTube.com slash fantasy points.
I hope you guys are clicking that subscribe button.
I want you to leave in the comment section, folks.
Number one, who's the bigger clown on this?
Joe or myself?
And then I want your take.
I'm going to send you the link to this article, Drake,
so you can post it in the show notes, by the way.
Oh, okay.
Let me make sure that hopefully we can hear this when I play it.
So here's me in my basement, the night of the draft, the Eagles have just made the pick.
I am 11 IPAs deep at this point.
And I'm standing there staring at the television, mouth agape.
I can't get over what I have just seen.
And I've queued up this point.
Let's see if we can hear this on the year.
Give me a thumbs up if you can hear this.
You just handed Carson Wentz a four-year contract extension averaging 3,000,
$32 million a year.
You've done everything the past off season to say this is Carson Wents' team.
We're going to get rid of, you know, we're going to get rid of Nick Foles.
Obviously, you have to do that.
We don't want a quarterback controversy here.
It's Carson's team.
We're going to get rid of guys in the locker room who aren't on Carson's side.
We're going to make sure the focus here is Carson Wence's face of the franchise.
You need wide receiver help.
Denzel Mim still on the board.
o'f. Yakes. All right, well, 0 for one.
Denzel Mims still on the board.
I think he still is.
Oh, man.
Yeah, he hasn't been drafted yet.
I wonder what he is going to take him.
Let's keep going.
Did you hand him Denzel Mims?
No, you handed him a quarterback controversy.
Wasn't wrong.
Wasn't wrong.
Redemption.
What do you think that?
It was a controversy, but it was a controversy for a reason, by the way.
So let's keep going.
here. This is fine.
Basement looks good, by the way.
Very clean down there that night.
Edia, and those fans are going to do when Carson throws a couple of picks or he comes up
and he twists his ankle or something like that.
For the next five years, minimally, you're going to be looking at a quarterback controversy.
Don't give me this.
We're going to run packages for Jalen Hertz.
We're going to use them like Tassim Hill.
You just use a second round pick when you have, have you seen the people starting for the
Eagles in the secondary. Have you seen their
corners? They're starting, they're bringing
Jalen Mills. They're going to convert him to
play safety when still on the board was
Ashton Davis and Jeremy Chin.
Oh, Jeremy Chin, a third reference today.
A third reference today.
I was very, my eyes almost popped out of my head.
To be fair, he's a good player.
Very good player.
At linebacker, there's guys like T.J. Edwards
slotted in there.
T.J. Edwards then, of course, goes out, plays his
balls off this year and signs a big deal. But again, at the time,
G.J. was not good. He was a role player.
They could have got Logan Wilson. I don't know who Logan Wilson is.
They have total trash in the back end of this defense. Jim Schwartz must be losing his mind right now.
Here's another thing, Joe, this coaching set. When this pick happened,
this was a completely different regime. Different head coach, different play call.
or all this. Nick Siriani wasn't even a twinkle in their eye at this point.
Hmm. Interesting. Let's keep rolling here with my awfulness.
And you went and took a backup quarterback. Fantasy-wise, that's a show we do. Let's spin this forward.
Does it help Wentz? You can't say it does. I don't know how it can help the Eagles here because
if this is a Taseham Hill situation now, you're going to be taking Wentz off the field in the red zone.
that never actually material as much.
The Jaylen Erd's packages were never a positive thing that Doug E.P.
got going.
And honestly, like, that's one of the criticisms that I put in my column were like, I thought the packages didn't make sense.
You know, I thought there were points where, you know, they would bring them in on third down and it was third and long.
And I'm like, what are you doing?
Like, what, how is Hurt supposed to succeed in that, in that regard?
So, no, I think there's some valid points about that.
but I think that the ultimate thing that this boils down to is I like I don't care if you say it was bad process.
I think it was great process in hindsight because the Eagles, whatever they tell you, you don't make this pick if you are certain about Carson Wentz.
They didn't, they don't make that pick if they are certain about Wentz.
and they made a ballsy pick
that ended up changing the entire
not just the literal face of the franchise
it changed the perception of the franchise
it changed
the path of the franchise
from a negative one to a positive one
I mean it just
we might look back in hindsight
and I don't want to get too far ahead of myself
but I mean, we're talking about a guy who just signed a five-year, $250 million contract
and it's 24 years old.
There is now an outcome where this pick that we ripped incessantly, and this is what
we're doing this show for, there is an outcome where we were this pick that was so heavily
criticized that we're dancing all over ourselves trying to defend Carson Wentz.
from it. There is a realistic pathway to this pick becoming one of the best draft picks
in modern NFL history. You could say that too because people never get elite,
I shouldn't say ever. Very rarely do you hit a home run on a franchise quarterback later in
the draft. The Cowboys lucked out with Dak Prescott. He was their second fourth round pick
of that year. So it's not like they were targeting Dak Prescott.
They fell into it.
Jerry,
I think Jerry with Dak was that his,
his overtures for Paxton Lynch went unanswered.
I think they wanted to draft Connor Cook.
You know, like, you know, like, but hey, they lucked out.
And DAC has been unbelievable for them and he's kept them in the,
I mean, the Cowboys are always in the conversation,
but he's kept them not just relevant, but also winning,
ever basically ever since he's gotten there.
Russell Wilson obviously is the big example where the Eagles,
and I think this is where Howie Rosen got really aggressive here with this,
with this move.
The Eagles were trying to play the draft.
They're like, oh, there's no way this team's going to take them.
So we don't need to take them in the second round, you know, like,
and Seattle just signed Matt Flynn.
They're not going to tell, well, Seattle took them.
Now, do you know who the Eagles had to settle for, by the way?
after after they settled for Nick Foles so not all bad for the Eagles although Foles left and came
back um but they were not going to let that happen again and I and Howie Roseman knew that
that chuckleheads like you and me were going to be sitting here going brbubbub and
and criticize the hell out of him because I mean he howie's pretty unassailable now in Philadelphia
but two years ago everybody wanted them fired.
It was like, oh, the best thing Chip Kelly ever did was shoving him into the broom closet,
you know, like.
And he just went out and did his thing, man.
And he made this incredibly unpopular pick.
And then they had to eat the most dead money in the history of the NFL.
That's where to me, I'm like, they didn't know that was going to happen because you wouldn't
want to eat that much money.
I don't think they thought Wentz was going to become the worst quarterback.
league. But, I mean, but combined, and here's what, here's what Kevin Cole said in that article.
Again, I'm going to, I'm going to link that. We're going to link that in the show notes so you guys
can read this because it's really an exceptional piece by Kevin Cole, by Kevin Cole.
And by the way, he also said how in here were pro football focuses model and Q base model,
thought Jalen Hertz was an undervalued NFL draft asset. As a matter of fact, he says QBase
from football outsiders found that Hertz was undervalued at an expected draft position
at the late third round.
After the draft, which also factors in draft capital into the equation,
it actually moved him to third in the class in terms of likely success behind Joe Burrow
and Justin Herbert.
So he leaped to him.
So the analytics were in on Jalen Hertz.
And we know the Eagles are an analytically forward-thinking franchise.
for sure but here's what kevin kirk here's what kevin cole said the herds acquisition gives the eagles
many options for unforeseeable circumstances if wence fails they have another quarterback with a
great chance of success and here i think part of the underlying kind of logic from kevin in this
piece was that he really liked jalen hurts uh as a prospect um if herds out plays wents in practice
they want to make the switch in a year the eagles will likely have strong offers for wents
in a trade and the cap hit for the combination of herz's contract and wenz's dead money
will be roughly the same as Wences's scheduled 2021 cap hit.
So again, that's why I thought so many people were overreacting to the cap hit number.
Well, all right, they moved on from Wence, but they thought they got better at the position anyway,
and they're essentially paying elite quarterback money.
Right, because you're paying, Jalen hurts nothing at the time.
If Wence gets injured, they have a potential high-level backup,
good enough to give a team with many pieces in place a chance to win the title.
And even if Wents Rebounds to 2017 form becomes an elite quarterback and remains healthy,
the Eagles have the option to use Hertz as an enhanced version of Taysom Hill and to potentially trade him down the road.
Teams shouldn't give themselves only one out at the most important position in the game.
And the Eagles have gained insurance and upside with the selection of Jalen Hertz.
Now, look, this is again, Wendt's becoming the worst quarterback in football,
plus Jalen Hurd's developing into an elite quarterback,
that's like maybe a 0.01% chance of happening, but it happened.
But the Eagles gave them, what's the old adage?
Luck is the result of hard work or some bullshit like that that I completely butcher.
The Eagles got lucky because they set themselves up to be lucky.
And even after Wentz was awful, they still got a first round pick for the guy.
I mean,
This is just unbelievable work by
Howie Roseman.
But let's also talk
Drake about just how
because you are right.
Jalen Hertz did show.
This kid's just gotten better.
Jeffrey Lurie said he's the most mature
24 year old he's ever been around.
I wouldn't be shocked if Jalen Hertz
is the most mature person
Jeffrey Lurie's ever been around.
I mean, look, the first time
I didn't know anything about Jalen Hurts the person
when I was watching Alabama when he was a freshman
and I'm like, oh, it's Alabama.
I'm watching college football, but I remember,
I'm sure you can find tweets from me
or I'm like, this kid can't play.
Like, I mean, he's athletic, but I just don't,
I don't think he sees the field.
I, you can't throw.
And then they benched him in the national title game.
And Tua comes in and he starts lighting the world on fire.
And I remember just being like,
How in the hell was Hertz the guy over Tua all season long?
I mean, I said, how did Sabin bench have this guy on the bench for Hertz?
And then I got the first taste of why.
Tua was on the bench for Jalen Hertz.
When after that game, Jalen Hertz literally just got benched.
His backup comes in and leads his team to a national championship.
And Hertz is glowing after the game.
Glowing.
And I said, first and foremost, I can't believe like ESPN Interimbing.
interviewed the kid. Number two, I was stunned by how well the kid handled himself. That was the first
glimpse that there was something here, Drake. And that was why I think, because this kid, what was he,
19 years old, and he's talking like he's 55 and has been through world wars. I mean,
just somebody who has an impressive perspective, that was the first sign for Jalen Hurts.
Jalen Hurts is, as we said, 24 years old.
Jaylen Hurd's got a chance to get paid again.
You know, he could get a contract when he's 30 years old and make, that's four years.
So, he can make another contract double what this one is.
So if he leads the Eagles to another Super Bowl in the next three years, this deal is getting
ripped up.
It's getting ripped up.
But you know what?
The Eagles don't care.
Yeah.
Because if he does lead you in another Super Bowl, who gives a shit?
That's why the fans today look at it.
They go, great, the guy led us to his Super Bowl.
If they would have went 8 and 7 again and lost in the first round of the playoffs,
this contract doesn't look anything similar to what we have today, not even close.
He's getting Daniel Jones money.
And people are thinking, should the Eagles with that 10th pick, you know, get another quarterback?
Did you want to hear any more of my whininess?
Do you want us to hear any more of your whiningness?
Let's, uh, a little bit more.
Let's hear.
Okay.
Uh, see if I can.
Oh, I can go full screen on myself.
Oh, that's embarrassing.
Let's see this.
And, you know, if you're going to run special packages for them, you've got to say,
make this Carson wins his team.
You said, hey, let's go draft a backup quarterback.
You got sniped in the first round.
you could have gone up and got CD land
you got Jalen Rager great fine let's show he plays
oh that is true though
they they should have drafted
and gone up and got CD land
here's the thing that happened with
well I mean they also passed on Justin Jefferson
but you know that's like I think
the thing that I did with that draft
was we all like Eagle fans
and just the media
all went through this kind of huge
thing of
jumping through hoops
to justify the Jalen Riker pick
when we should have been trashed
and Howie for that pick
and jumping through the hoops to justify
the Jalen Hertz pick
as Kevin Cole so astutely laid out
Drake you have got to read that entire article
like I'm telling you.
Kevin's a smart dude
it was one of the most pressing articles
and it was good to throw that out there
as we're making fun of ourselves
for our absolutely atrocious taste
in this one.
But is out.
Let's surround the guy.
You're paying $32 million a year with some weapons.
You could have got another offensive lineman for your aging center.
Center still there.
Still aging, by the way.
You could have gotten another wide receiver.
Who would have thought they'd go out and have years after this?
A.J. Brown and DeVantta Smith.
and I mentioned how terrible their corners were at this time.
Now it's slay them Bradbury.
They're flying off the board left and right in this round.
As we said, safety, corner, linebacker.
Isn't every year that's what we're talking about with the Eagles draft needs,
safety, corner, linebacker?
Every year, that's what they need.
They never take any of them.
And every year, they're pretty damn good.
To take a running quarterback here.
I'm flabbergasted.
That might be the best place to put a bow on that.
Yeah.
You were flabbergasted.
I was flabbergasted.
I probably said so much, I definitely threw a lot more four-letter words in there when I was sitting there.
That was the COVID draft, by the way.
And it was like the fun, the fun thing about that pick was like, first that that was like one of the first like events where like people let COVID escape from their brains for a little bit, which was, I know we,
we were all sitting there with Goodell in his basement and we were all like, oh, this is weird.
And then by like 10 picks in, we were starting to talk, yeah, you know, about the picks.
And we're like, oh, this ended up feeling good.
But that, that, the Hertz pick was the first one where I was like, oh, I get to be angry sports fan here.
Um, at two months after all sports were canceled.
This feels pretty freaking good.
Um, and, and then I just can't imagine like, I couldn't imagine this outcome, but Jalen
Hurst deserves the most credit in the world.
He stayed at Alabama.
After the benching from Tua,
he stayed at Alabama
for another year, developed
under their coaching staff.
He came in, led Alabama
with Tua being hurt
to another national championship game, then
seated to him.
Goes to Oklahoma, finish the second in the
Heisman voting. And I remember
tweet, I did tweet, I'm starting to be
intrigued by Jalen Hertz as a
prospect.
Because he had just kept getting better.
His upward climb, I mean, are we sure he's a finished product?
He's 24.
Absolutely.
I mean, the weapons are there.
He's only had one season as an elite quarterback.
You know, it's not like he's setting the world on fire for, you know, a decade.
And we're like, oh, wow, look at the Joe Burrow.
We know Joe Burrow can spin.
We know Justin Herbert has a cannon for an arm.
Jalen hurts.
I mean, we don't even know what we got here.
And by the way, I'm a huge believer in that.
I know we laughed.
Oh, he's got that dog in him.
I'm a believer in that in pro athletes.
That absolutely freaking matters.
I mean, and Jalen Hertz is like, look at the players around the NFL who aren't even on the Eagles.
tweeting about how happy they are for Jalen Hertz.
People can sense this.
But that makes your franchise a destination.
Yes.
People want to come play with it.
Tyree Kills tweeting about Jalen Hertz.
You know,
this guy's younger than Johnny Mansell.
He's younger than Hendon Hooker,
who might get drafted in the first round here in a couple of weeks.
I mean, this nobody likes an old hooker.
Hey, speak for yourself, man.
That would be the title of the show on YouTube.
I don't get some SEO for us.
We're going to find an old hooker.
Yeah, roughly around pick 30 of the NFL draft.
That's where you can find one.
Philadelphia would love to grab some third round picks if you got.
Yeah, I don't think if the Eagles are going to draft a high upside backup to Jalen Hertz.
I don't think it's one who's going to be older than Jalen Hertz.
I don't think that's going to happen.
By the way, they signed Marcus Mariotta, who's a totally fine backup at this stage.
But no, I mean, Drake, we were wrong.
Jalen Hurts made us dead wrong.
Good for him.
Good for him.
Good for the Eagles, who, by the way, still have two first round picks coming up.
Good for fantasy football, because we're excited to draft Jalen Hertz.
We're excited to draft his offensive weapons.
And now we can start talking about what we love talking about here in the two-point stance.
Where do we draft this guy?
How high is too high for Jalen Hertz?
You're going to see some home leagues out there.
People are drafting Jalen Hertz in the second round.
But these quarterbacks are coming off the border.
I want Josh Allen.
I want Jalen hurts.
I want my homes.
second third round you're going to see it come off the board this year for the quarterbacks i'm
telling you right now people are going to they're sick of waiting they're sick of missing out
people are going to go up and get their guy oh there's there's no doubt and if you look at like
underdog adps um people are really into you know mohomes hurts um burrow all these guys
going early i'm interested to see what happens with lamar jackson let's let's put let's put that bow on
on the podcast what do you think happens with lamar now he's
It fully guaranteed out the window.
This deal that he signed Jalen Hertz is similar as reported by,
I think Jameson Hensley tweeted this out and maybe Schaefter retweeted it.
The deal, yes.
So Hertz's deals, $255 million total.
Reportedly Jackson turned down a deal that was $250.
Hertz had 179 fully guaranteed for injury.
Jackson was 175.
So very similar deal that Lamar Jackson turned down.
I think he'll say, hey, give me $5 million more than he's making.
All these guys are going to say on that annual average yearly structure,
give me a million more than this guy.
Give me $500,000 more than that guy.
Lamar will end up signing because, I mean, what else,
what else can he do?
Where else can he go at this point?
And I mean, first, the fully guaranteed out the window.
He's not getting the Deshaun Watson contract.
By the way, some of the, the only people who might be happier about this deal than the Eagles and Jalen Hertz are other NFL owners who are like, oh, thank God.
they didn't give them a fully guaranteed contract.
Oh, my God.
I get why the players want to fight.
Oh, of course.
I'm on their side, by the way.
Yeah, but they should get fully guaranteed contracts.
But the money this league generates.
I mean, by God, the commanders are going to sell for over $6 billion.
If you have money by an NFL team, you want to talk about a fail-safe investment.
Daniel Snyder did everything he could to depress the value of that franchise,
and he's walking away with a $6 billion nest egg.
I mean, good Lord.
Anyway.
If you have money, like, yes, I have $6 billion to spend on a team.
If you have that money.
That's between the cushions.
contract is exactly the same exactly the same rosters are exactly the same let's just say there's an
expansion team they plop in montreal canada it's just for the sake of fighting sammy zanes who do you
take jaylon hurts i think i'm taking jaylon hurts i'm taking hurts i'm taking hurts
two homers taking them let's go by the way i'm not against lamar fighting for his money i'm not
against that at all, but I think there is something to be said.
We knew the Hertz deal was getting done, but there's no, there's no, oh, pay me on
social media and none of that. And it just happened. And I would think,
I'm sure players, like, I'm not trying to argue Lamar's a bad leader or anything like that.
I mean, I think we have enough evidence to argue Carson Wences, but I'm not going to argue
that with Lamar. I don't know enough about him. But I do feel like something like Hertz,
that speaks to players around the league as well.
This is a guy I want to go to battle with it.
And you remember that maybe it was planted by the agent or the team or whatever.
They were drumming it up at ESPN that the PCL injury for Lamar last year was a little over exaggerated.
He wouldn't come back and play on it.
I talked to the doctor, Jesse Morth, who I did my serious XM show with, he's like,
you can't play on a PCL.
Like, it's loose and wobbly and it's not going to feel right.
And you're not going to want to do it.
And he never came back.
Yeah, I don't want this to be a shit on.
on Lamar session because that's not what it is.
It just goes to show you like, I mean, could you imagine when the Eagles made this draft
pick, Drake, and how you and I basically were blasting insults out of our asses all over our
computer screens.
I still haven't claimed the screen, by the way.
Get a little of this off.
Imagine saying in less than three years, we're going to be sitting on a podcast together
legitimately asking ourselves if Jalen Hertz is better than Lamar Jackson and both agreeing
that he is.
It's crazy, man.
I mean, look at Jalen Hertz just, it's got to be commended for what he did.
His QBR in 2021 was 48.5.
I mean, he couldn't do anything as a passer.
And now one year later, people are considering him one of the five best quarterbacks
in football.
So this shows you the Eagles don't believe this is a fluke.
and I tend to trust the Eagles on these things.
They've given us more than enough benefit of doubt.
As it, let's just, you're an Eagle fan, Drake.
Put on your fan hat here.
Do I have a hat?
Let me look.
Do I have an Eagles fan hat?
Okay.
Hang on.
Well, I'm going to kill some time here while you're, uh, you found the hat.
Okay, put on the fan hat.
All right.
Eagles fan hat going on.
This is why you got to watch on YouTube.
All right.
Eagles fan hat is on.
Well, that's a nice lid, by the way.
Is that a, is that a trucker?
trucker hat? No, it's, it's like foam. It's like a fake trucker hat. It's fitted. I like it,
though. It's very nice. Okay.
Fan hats on. This can be a segment every week. You are given the ultimatum. You're running the
Eagles for the day. You are given the ultimatum. You can call all 32 NFL teams and offer them
Jalen Hertz for their starting quarterback. And let's just,
let's just presume these quarterbacks have their current contracts, their current ages.
This is not like the Lamar exercise where we just pop them onto a neutral team.
How many teams do you call and say, I offered Jalen Hertz for their starting quarterback?
How many say no?
Kansas City says no.
For sure.
Buffalo says no.
I would agree with that.
Let me see.
If I knew the net number of...
Cincinnati says no.
Yeah, Cincinnati says no.
Chargers say no.
I think the Chargers is one where like,
you can probably make an argument,
but I think both sides on that one would be like,
ah, let's not make a...
I always say it's in fantasy.
Don't make a 5248 trade.
Don't trade one running back for another running.
back when basically it has coin flip odds are working out for you.
I wonder if the Eagles and Chargers are both like, thanks, but no thanks.
We like your guy.
Yeah.
But we're just going to stay where we are.
But I think Cincinnati says no.
I think Buffalo says no.
I think Kansas City says no.
Outside of that in the AFC,
everybody else says yes.
The entire AFCE says yes.
Does Jacksonville say yes?
Absolutely.
100%.
You think Jacksonville says yes.
Yes.
I'm not 100% sure of that, but think of how ridiculous that sounds,
or would have sounded even last year.
But, I mean, Jalen Hertz is a more accomplished player than Trevor Lawrence right now.
Sure.
With one more year under his belt.
But, I mean, yeah, now who else?
Pittsburgh, yeah, they're not trading.
Of course.
If I'm, there's, I know the Eagles were apparently hot for Deshawn Watson,
and let's also factor in luck here to a lot of what went on.
how freaking lucky are the Eagles that Russell Wilson and Deshawn Watson didn't want to play for them?
Yeah, I mean, let's be honest.
You wouldn't have been in the Super Bowl last year.
You would not have been.
Wilson was terrible last year.
So was Deshawn.
I mean, Deshawn also was rusty and also, you know, Drake, you were just talking about being proud that your child can wear a Jalen Hurts jersey.
Not so much, Deshawn Watson.
I mean.
No.
So, like, the Eagles.
also got lucky, okay?
But they made their own luck.
And I think Howie Roseman should be commended for that.
They invested in the right player.
I'm looking through the NFC, by the way.
Oh, Jaylon Hertz is by far the best quarterback in the NFC.
It's not even, everybody would say yes.
I mean, like, who, who could even, who could even say,
Kyler freaking Murray?
No way.
Like, I mean, like, look at Kyleor Murray was, and he got paid,
but Kyler Murray hasn't gotten better since day one.
in the NFL. Could you imagine Jalen Hurts in San Francisco? Oh, yeah. I mean,
I mean, he'd be great, but Philadelphia's really good, too. I mean, you can make an argument
for Dak Prescott, but there is no way Dallas puts that phone down. Justin Fields,
forget about it. I mean, Justin Fields is literally everybody who's like, I think Justin Fields
is going to be really good. The rationale for that is, look at what Jalen Hertz did. So Justin Fields,
They're saying Justin Fields' best case outcome is Jaylen Hertz.
Yeah, Justin Fields also needs much better coaching.
They need to upgrade the offensive line significantly and give him legitimate weapons,
which is what the Eagles did.
Right, and I think that's why it's a fair comparison to be made.
But like, that's why I'm saying there is not a team in the NFC that hangs up the phone
if you offer Jaylen Hurts, starting quarterback.
Yeah, no, you're not wrong.
You're not wrong.
Well, this was a fun one, Joe.
