Lessons learned from early mock drafts
right now on Fantasy Football Today in 5
I'm Adam Azer with Jamie Eisenberg
Jamie, what have we learned as we've done these mock drafts?
What have we learned about quarterbacks?
What have we learned?
I think we're seeing that, you know, you win in the position
you'll still get some pretty good talent
you know, that's probably something that we said
a lot over the last several years and it's worked
out at times um but i think we're also starting to see you know our drafts a little weird when
it comes to quarterbacks because the top you know handful of guys don't go until like round three or
round four you know mahomes hurts alan those guys so might not be the best judge based on how
most drafts will go but to see guys like like Kyler Murray and Jordan Love and Brock Purdy
and Tua Tungavailoa go as late as they do,
and then the rookies of Caleb Williams and Jane Daniels,
there's just so much talent in the position
that you should be able to get one or two guys,
depending on how you want to draft.
But for me, it's still going to be the later the better.
So seeing the caliber of quarterbacks, Purdy was a top 10 guy last love was a top 10 guy you know based on how he finished um by the
end of the season to a lead the nfl and passing yards you know so for me it's waiting and i think
that should be uh something that that ends up happening more times than not this season yeah
but i'll tell you what i mean speaking of waiting one thing i've learned is that nobody wants to
draft rashid rice he's the third Chiefs wide receiver taken.
I mean, I don't know about all the time, but it happens.
I mean, look, he was the last pick of round eight in this draft.
And yet Patrick Mahomes continues to be in a lot of our drafts QB one.
So it's like we're expecting a pretty big suspension from Rice, I think,
but not penalizing Mahomes.
I don't know if we're expecting a big suspension. I'll just tell you how I approach it, that I'm expecting a four big suspension from Rice, I think, but not penalizing Mahomes. I don't know if we're expecting a big suspension.
I'll just tell you how I approach it,
that I'm expecting a four-game suspension.
But it's also the fact that the reason Rice is falling
and part of the reason why Mahomes is climbing
is there's more talent in the receiving court.
You know, I mean, you add Marquise Brown,
you add Xavier Worthy.
You know, we just got finished talking about,
you know, our rankings conundrums,
and Dave brought up Travis Kelsey's postseason finish, and that's got to weigh on people's minds. you know, our rankings conundrums and Dave brought up Travis
Kelsey's post-season finish. And that's got a way on people's minds, you know, how great he was.
Can he get to that level once again? So Mahomes with whatever he gets from Rice on top of the
addition of Brown, the addition of Worthy and Kelsey still being there, it's hard not to like
his situation while still feeling a little bit concerned about Rice. And so even if Rice wasn't
suspended while he may still get drafted as the number one
chiefs receiver, he was still going to get a downgrade because of the additions that they made.
Okay. What have we learned at running back? So this is an interesting spot because I think
we're seeing that round two is great for the position, you know, where we're seeing guys
like Barkley and Kyron Williams and Travis ETN, James Cook, Rashad White, Isaiah Pacheco,
Derek Henry, you know, that group of guys that are still going to be top 12 guys going around too.
So it, the way I would like to draft, unless I have Christian McCaffrey at one, I get the
one overall pick, or I'm at the back end of round two, which is where I like to, you know,
put Brees Hall and Bijan Robinson, uh, to go running back wide receiver or wide receiver
running back, I think is the best approach with the first two rounds.
Because when you come back to the end of round two, those wide receivers are going to look pretty scary.
You know, when you're talking about, for me at least, the group that starts to worry me, Devontae Adams, Michael Pittman, Mike Evans, the 49ers guys.
There's a lot of questions there.
So I would like to go receiver early in the round, round one, and then running back in round two. Uh, when we get to the, uh, RB two range, you know, we spent some time talking about this with
Jonathan Brooks, you know, that those guys that you see in the twenties, uh, early twenties of
Deandre Swift and Najee Harris and Tony Pollard and Zach Moss and, and that whole group, James
Connor, Jonathan Brooks. Um, you got to either really have some conviction on one of those guys or be
prepared to, I think, take two running backs relatively soon,
especially even some of the handcuffs.
So Pollard and Spears, you know, we talked about that round eight,
round nine, Moss and Chase Brown, round eight, round nine,
round nine, round 10, Najee Harris, Jalen Warren, you know,
those type of guys, or just pass on the quote unquote starter.
And you could take a high upside backup
that could still be really good.
And at wide receiver, Jamie, what have we learned?
Yeah, the biggest thing I think
is when Marvin Harrison's coming off the board
and even just the rookie wide receivers,
because it's such a talented group.
But Harrison, we've seen go as early as 14th overall.
He's going to be around to get used to that.
He's going to be ranked
and probably drafted as a top 10 receiver.
The conversation we had on the Thursday show of
Harrison versus a lobby versus London. That's the range for him. So get ready for that. And then
when does Malik neighbors, who's going to be the second wide receiver come off the board,
which is going to be somewhere in that round six range, I think makes a lot of sense. You know,
as we discussed, he could be the Stefan digs to Josh Allen that he'll be for hopefully Daniel
Jones, clearly not the same upside or potential, but adding that number one alpha wide receiver will hopefully lend to him being the team
leader in targets and having a successful 900 plus yard rookie campaign, hopefully six
plus touchdowns.
But really it's just, you know, when do you buy into these rookie wide receivers, Romo
Dunze, you know, by comparison to some more established guys, Xavier Worthy, as you just
mentioned, could be the best receiver for the chiefs.
Brian Flowers could end up being, you know, one of, if not the best receiver for the Jaguars. So
there's a lot to love about this class. Ladd McConkie, those type of guys, Xavier Leguette,
there's just a lot of upside. So the rookie wide receivers, I think, are going to sort of determine,
as you put it, the safe wide receivers or the upside guys. And for me, I'm always going to lean toward upside.
I think you called Brian Thomas Brian Flowers.
I'm sorry, Brian Thomas.
That was interesting.
What have we learned in tight end?
Kind of the tried and true, but a different ranking and drafting at the top.
Sam Laporta should be the number one tight end off the board.
Kelsey's still in the mix, but there's four guys that are going to go, I think, in the first four rounds. Laporta and
Kelsey will be the first two. Andrews and McBride will be the second two. I really love the situation
for Dalton Kincaid. He's my number five tight end. Once Kincaid comes off the board, then I'm
starting to, I should say, once Ingram comes off the board, he's my number six tight end.
Can you buy into Kyle Pitts? That's probably the biggest dilemma. But then I'm looking usually for the later guys,
which for me this year is
the biggest target is Jake Ferguson. I just think he's
the safest back end, tight end
one. He's a top ten guy for me. I would take him over to
David Njoku, for example. I'd take him over to TJ Hawkins.
Thank you, Jamie Eisenberg
and all of you for watching and listening.
We'll talk to you next week on Fantasy Football Today in 5.
