Turning our attention to the NFL draft,
we're talking quarterbacks right now with Emory Hunt.
Welcome to Fantasy Football Today in 5. Emory Hunt dropped such great knowledge about the
prospects last year. We thought, hey, let's do it again. Follow him on Twitter at FBallGamePlan.
You can see him on CBS Sports HQ. You're going to hear him on FFT in 5 for the next several weeks.
Emory, let's talk about the quarterback class in general. Not a great reputation
for this class going in.
How do you see this QB class?
You know, it's interesting.
You got to spin the perspective this way in terms of it's a great year to find a QB, too, on your roster to upgrade your backup quarterback with a guy that can be a bridge quarterback to someone you think may be better. So I like the depth here as far as talent to improve the backup quarterback situation in the NFL, because we've seen
over the course of the last two years, you better have two decent quarterbacks,
otherwise you're in trouble. Okay. Now that is a glass half full approach. I love it. I love it.
Okay. So we're going to talk about your top three quarterbacks in this class. Malik Willis
from Liberty is number one. Yeah. I'm a big fan of the traits and the tools.
If you talk about prospect, Malik Willis to me is the number one prospect at the position.
He has the arm strength.
He has the speed, mobility, and the upside.
He's one of those guys you can get in, groom, and you put him around better talent, it should yield better results.
So to me, he was a clear-cut number one way back in the summer, and he has held true to that form right now. Who does he compare to in the NFL?
That's a great question because I've been struggling to try to find a comp for him.
I would say this way. He's probably more along the lines of a more explosive version
of Jalen Hurts. Someone that's built the same way, is a faster runner, has a stronger arm,
but play the same game so i would say a more
explosive version of what the eagles have in jalen hurts how would you compare him to trey lance a
year ago in terms of readiness in terms of upside traits all that stuff with trey lance malik willis
and lance much more advanced than lance lance only had that one year of starting in a predominantly
run offense he didn't play particularly well in his one showcase game in 2020. Malik Willis has two full years of starting. And you can say 2020,
I mean, they won the ACC. They beat three of the four ACC teams on that schedule.
This year, they had a down season. But I think Malik Willis is far ahead, ready to go
right now than Trey Lance was coming out of North Dakota State.
Our last question about Willis, and we'll talk about a couple of other guys here.
You think he ends up as a top 10 pick?
Oh, that's another great question.
You know, there's a few teams that I would see it depending on how does the Sean Watson
situation shakes out.
If I'm Detroit, might as well pull the trigger right now.
Get a guy that you can stash.
Uh, I think he ends up as a top 10 pick based off the person based off the talent and based
off the need and not wanting to
gamble and trade away assets to try to get the guy you want right then and there.
All right, let's talk about Caleb Ellaby. He is number two for you out of Western Michigan.
I didn't expect to have him this high when I jumped into the process because I thought a lot
of people talk about Caleb Ellaby on Twitter, which tells me he's probably not good. But
watching his film, I was like, you know what?
This guy makes all these throws really well. He played a great game versus Pitt. He outplayed
Kenny Pickett. He also had a really good game against Michigan. So in their two spotlight
games, he played his best football, moving the football down the field. He throws well on the
move. He was just making great decisions with the football. And I just became a big fan of his game.
He was someone that I couldn't deny that number two spot. Okay. Give me a comp. You have an NFL comp for Caleb Ellaby.
I hate giving this comp because it's kind of, it's a, it's a cop out, but everybody is built
the same way and throws a little bit like him. Oh, he reminds me of Dak Prescott. So he's kind
of like Dak Prescott in terms of what he brings to the table from a skillset perspective.
Skylar Thompson, three for you.
He was someone I thought would have came out last year, but he got injured.
And that's a common theme for Skylar Thompson.
He can play.
And every time he's in the football game, Kansas State moves the football down the field.
He's someone that plays a lot like Derek Carr.
He's a scrambler.
He can make things happen with his legs.
I think he throws the ball better than people give him credit for.
And he's coming off a really strong week.
I was out there at the East-West Shrine Bowl.
I thought he was one of the best quarterbacks out there.
So I'm excited about Skylar Thompson.
The only issue is the red flag with the injury concerns.
He's had injuries.
I want to say the last three seasons he's been playing ball.
When do you think Ellaby and Thompson get drafted?
I think Thompson is more of a day three
guy. Ellaby may surprise some folks and go late day two, maybe in round three. So he's someone I
see a little bit higher in terms of where they're going to go. The only guy I would take in round
one this year is Malik Willis. Everyone else I see is more along the lines of, you know, sort of QB1s that
could start, but more than likely QB2s that can win you some games in the three to four game stretch.
Okay. So those are the top three for Emory Hunt, Malik Willis, Caleb Ellaby, Skylar Thompson.
On our next show, which you're going to hear tomorrow, we will talk about some dark horse
candidates on Fantasy Football Today in five at the quarterback position. Some dark horses that
you might see go later in the NFL draft for Emory hunt.
I am Adam Acer. We'll talk to you tomorrow on FFP.
