Good evening, everybody. Quick waiver wire update for you as we have to tell you about the Packers running backs and the Miles Gaskin injury.
Adam Azer and Chris Towers here on this Tuesday evening. No Twitch tonight, by the way.
If you're hearing this now and you're going to tune into Twitch tonight, we are not having a show because it is election night.
But Chris, let's start with the Dolphins. Well, actually, let's look at the entire situation.
Okay, the Dolphins play at Arizona on Sunday. Miles Gaskin is out three weeks, roughly,
with a sprained MCL.
No Jamal Williams this week.
No A.J. Dillon for the Packers.
Maybe Aaron Jones.
But what are you doing
in terms of putting in claims
for running backs right now?
I mean, among that group,
there's not a lot to
really get excited about.
You know, Aaron Jones did, he was listed as a limited
participant in practice, which was an upgrade. He hadn't practiced before this. The problem with
that is he actually hasn't practiced yet because the Packers did a walkthrough today, not an actual
practice. So it's hard to say exactly what that means. If I had to pick someone from the Dolphins or Packers to add this week on waivers,
it would probably be Matt Breida, who has been running as Myles Gaskins' backup.
The Dolphins' matchup against the Cardinals isn't quite as tough
as the Packers' matchup against the 49ers.
And we know Matt Breida is an NFL back at the very least.
Dexter Williams is likely to be called up from the practice squad. I don't think the Packers
would even be able to get someone else into the building because of the COVID protocols
in time for Thursday. So it'll be a Dexter Williams, Tyler Irvin split. And Tyler Irvin
is an interesting playmaker.
They seem to like him with the ball in his hands in the passing game.
However, he's listed as a running back.
He's only played four snaps out of the backfield out of his 107 snaps so far this season.
So he really is more of a gadget player.
He's like 185 pounds, 5'10".
So you're thinking if you had to pick a Packers running back and it was not Aaron
Jones it would be Dexter Williams I think so but you know maybe Irvin is going to get you know
maybe they work in more short throws in the passing game and they use Irvin kind of as an extension of
the running game and get him five or six targets and maybe that's enough to get him to you know
eight to ten fantasy points whereas
Williams you're probably looking at you know he was a sixth round pick not a great talent someone
who you know wasn't able to make I think he had four carries as a rookie before uh falling off
the roster so I think you're hoping he falls into the end zone and it's such a tough matchup against
the 49ers that it's hard to get excited about either. They're both desperation plays.
Niners giving up the fewest fantasy points.
Now the second fewest.
The Ravens have overtaken them.
The second fewest fantasy points to running backs.
3.42 yards per carry at a running back.
So it is tough.
But Aaron Jones scored a touchdown in every game he played.
Jamal Williams scored a touchdown in week seven.
Had over 100 yards in week eight.
So it's kind of like the DJ Dallas situation last week
where you're just getting a running back in a great offense
and hoping he finds the end zone, basically.
And then as far as Breida goes, I mean, you said it.
He's proven he's an NFL running back and kind of a pretty good one, I would say.
You just go back and look at the first nine games,
first 10 games maybe of 2019 and matt brita
you forget he got a lot of work and he was 109 carries and tevin coleman was playing in seven of
those 10 games and 90 109 carries 16 catches five yards per carry he was a number three running back
he had double digit carries in eight of his first nine games so he you know i think yeah he feels
like number one with a bullet.
If you just look,
just look at these two backfields because we don't know about Aaron Jones
and whatnot.
Yeah.
I would say Jordan Howard probably is going to be active for the first
time in a couple of weeks.
He,
I don't think he was inactive because he was like the fourth running back
or anything.
I think it was more that because he doesn't play special teams and he's
not a pass catcher.
He was kind of a luxury,
but Brita figures to be the closest this team has
to what Gaskin can do as far as contributing as both a pass catcher
and a runner.
Howard will probably, you know, maybe eight to ten carries,
and you're just hoping he falls into the end zone.
The one wild card that I will point out is the Dolphins did trade.
I think they swapped late- round picks with the Chiefs to
acquire DeAndre Washington, who was the odd man out in the Chiefs backfield. And we've seen
Washington be a pretty useful fantasy option. He was actually, I believe, a top five running back
for the, was it two or three games that he played with Josh Jacobs out last season? He was really good. He caught a bunch of passes.
He is someone who,
if they can get him in the building and get him up to speed quick enough,
which,
you know,
might be unlikely for week nine.
Washington is an interesting three down option as well,
but that might be more of a week 10 or 11 with Gaskin expected to miss
multiple games.
So yeah,
Brita the top option here,
but certainly you'd rather have DJ Dallas.
You'd rather have Damian Harris.
You'd rather have Jordan Wilkins.
Would you rather have Wayne Goldman?
Maybe even Wayne Gallman.
Yeah,
it's close.
I think so.
Yeah.
I mean,
it depends on Devante Freeman's injury.
I'm going to tell you this much.
If I'm starting Ronald,
if I'm depending on Ronald Jones
or even Leonard Fournette
against New Orleans,
but really more like Ronald Jones,
like Ronald Jones against New Orleans
on Sunday night,
I think I want to get Matt Breida
and at least give myself time
to think about this here
and see how it plays out, you know?
Yeah, I think that's fair.
But among those waiver-wire guys,
like DJ Dallas, Damian Harris, Jordan Wilkins, Gus Edwards.
I think I would rather have all of those guys than Brita and definitely the
rest of the options between the dolphins and Packers.
All right. Thank you very much. Chris towers.
Hope this was helpful for everybody. Good luck with your waiver wire.
We will talk to you tomorrow with some mid-season awards on Fantasy Football.
