Hiring, do it the right way with Indeed. Five years ago, I was that guy. the one checking slack at 11 p.m. The one who felt guilty taking a lunch break. The one who thought grinding harder was the answer to everything.
Starting point is 00:01:08 And frankly, I was miserable. The grind isn't just failing us. It's actively destroying our ability to be successful. And I'm about to show you why, using something I called a peak framework. But first, let me tell you about the lie that almost broke me. Hi, my name's Ryan Hanley. And while everyone else is telling you to find,
Starting point is 00:01:37 balance. I'm here to tell you that's bullshit. Three years ago, I was the poster child for entrepreneurial chaos. Great ideas, terrible execution, chasing every opportunity like a squirrel on Red Bull. Then I stopped fighting my ADHD and started weaponizing it. Built and sold a seven-figure company hit number two in all of Apple Podcasts. And I've done more than 50 keynotes in that time. Here's what the productivity gurus won't tell you. Your brain isn't broken. The system you're using is. Your overwhelm is actually your edge. You just need to stop apologizing for it and start leveraging it. That's what we do here at Finding Peak. All right. So the myth that almost broke me. You know, that feeling when you're scrolling through LinkedIn and everyone's posting about
Starting point is 00:02:26 their hustle, their 5 a.m. workouts, their 16 hour days, they're blessed to be grinding posts, all that hustle porn. Yeah, I bought into that shit hard. I thought, successful meant being busy. I thought it meant saying yes to everything I thought rest was for the week. And it led to three warning signs that I ignored until it was almost too late. And I'm going to share those with you in a second. But first, I learned something important. The problem isn't ambitious. Shit, I'm ambitious as hell. The problem is we've confused motion, activity with progress and impact. We've confused being busy with being effective. And this is, we've confused. And this is where the P comes in and peak. It stands for presence. When you're constantly thinking about the next
Starting point is 00:03:12 thing, the next goal, the next achievement, you're never actually here, like right here. And if you're not here, you're not making real decisions. You're just reacting. You're not operating in reality. Those three warning signs I mentioned, well, the first, you feel guilty when you're not working. And I know many of you have felt that. Number two, you've forgotten what you actually enjoy about the work. And three, and this is a big one, you're achieving things, but you're actually feeling emptier than you did before. Does any of that sound familiar? I know it certainly does for me,
Starting point is 00:03:48 just sharing it with you here on this show. The question that changed everything for me is this. It broke me out of my cycle. It broke me out of this cycle. Why am I really doing this? Not the surface level answer, not the to be successful or to make money, that kind of ethereal, nonsensical, meditative answer.
Starting point is 00:04:12 But the real why. I'm going to give you a simple exercise in a minute that will cut through all the BS and get you to your real why. But first, you need to understand something about your brain. See, there are two types of motivation driving you right now in this moment. External motivation, that's the money, the status, Instagram likes, and internal motivation.
Starting point is 00:04:33 that's the stuff that actually makes us fulfilled. Our entire culture, every part of it, is built around external motivation. But research shows that once your basic needs are met, external motivators actually decrease performance and satisfaction. And here's where the A comes in in our peak framework. It stands for awareness. This is about brutal self-awareness, not the feel-good kind, the kind where you look in the mirror and ask how much of what I'm chasing,
Starting point is 00:05:03 is actually mine and how much is just what I think I'm supposed to want. That exercise I promised, grab your phone, set a timer for five minutes, write down everything you're currently working towards. Then, next to each item, write either me or them, meaning is this something you actually want or is it something you think others expect of you? The results will shock you. they definitely did for me. And I normally buck at some of these framework activities,
Starting point is 00:05:38 but this one just blew me away. Building your actual success blueprint, right? That's what we're doing here. So now that you know your real why, what do you do next? Well, now you build the blueprint that's actually yours, not your parents, not societies, not what looks good on social media, but yours. I'm about to share the three-step process
Starting point is 00:05:59 I use to completely redesign my life. it's probably going to look nothing like what you think success should look like. Step number one, define your non-negotiables. Not your goals, your non-negotiables. The things that if you don't have them, nothing else matters. For me, this is time of my boys. I'm a single dad. I have two young boys.
Starting point is 00:06:23 I want to spend as much time as I possibly can with them during these formative years. Creative work is another one. I need creative work that challenges me in order to wake up every day and feel fulfilled. And finally, and this one surprised me, I just need free space to think. Space without agenda, without time blocked, activities that have to be done,
Starting point is 00:06:46 just space to allow my brain to travel. And I would have never considered that without this exercise. So that's step number one. Step number two, design your days around these non-negotiables. Not your goals, goals are destinations. Non-negotiables are how you travel there. Step number three, accept that this is going to evolve. You're not building a prison.
Starting point is 00:07:12 You're building a framework that grows with you. This is the foundation. And here's where the E and peak comes in. This is energy. Energy isn't about having more of it. It's about directing it. When you're clear on what actually matters to you, you stop wasting energy on everything else.
Starting point is 00:07:29 You become focused, intentional, powerful. and that leads us to the hardest part. The art of the strategic no. Learning to say no is a superpower, certainly one that I was not born with. Because it's terrifying. Because saying no to one thing means you might lose out on the opportunity.
Starting point is 00:07:52 And what if you're wrong? What if you miss out? What if people think you're not ambitious or don't want to work with people anymore? I'm going to share the exact framework I use to decide what to say no to. But first, let me tell you about the most expensive yes I ever said. And it came at the cost of a personal relationship. I said yes to a keynote opportunity because I felt like that opportunity opened doors for me in an industry that I
Starting point is 00:08:22 wanted more speaking gigs in. And I felt like if I said no to that opportunity, then I would be left off future lists of potential speakers in that space. While at the same time, one of my very good friends with college was getting married on that same weekend. And because I had said yes to the speaking opportunity, when I got the invitation to go to my friend's wedding, I immediately was filled with anxiety. I felt pressure, stress, I felt the stress of wanting to be there for my friend. I felt the stress of wanting to capitalize on this opportunity to keynote in an industry that I was trying to grow in.
Starting point is 00:09:05 And ultimately, I made the wrong decision. I chose the keynote because I felt like for my career, for where I was, the fact that I had said yes to it first, that dictated me having to say no to my friend. And it caused a disconnect in our relationship that even to this day has never been repaired. And I regret that. And sure, I could have said no to the speaking gig and go on to the wedding. That would have been the right decision. But I allowed pressure.
Starting point is 00:09:39 I allowed this hustle culture. I allowed not understanding that success looks like having this amazing friend in my life and not one more speaking gig because I didn't have these boundaries in place. See, every yes is a no to something else. Every opportunity you take is 10 others that you don't. The question isn't, is this a good opportunity? That speaking gig was a good opportunity. The question is, is this the right opportunity from where I'm going?
Starting point is 00:10:10 And the answer to that was no. And this is where the K comes in in our peak framework. And it stands for calibration, obviously misspelled. You're going to drift, I drift, everyone drifts. The difference between people who build lives they love and people who don't, isn't that they never fall off the tracks. It's that they notice faster and correct course. Calibration isn't about balance. Balance is bullshit. Balance is static.
Starting point is 00:10:38 Calibration is dynamic. It's finding harmony. It's the discipline of constantly asking, is this still serving me? Is this still aligned with who I want to become? That framework for saying no, it's three simple questions. does this align with my non-negotiables? Does this move me towards who I want to become? Am I saying yes because it's right or because I'm afraid of missing out? If you can't answer yes to the first two
Starting point is 00:11:10 and no to the third, then it should be a hard no. And I'm going to give you an even easier framework. And this comes from Derek Sivers. You wrote a great book by the same name. It's either hell yes or it's no. Incredibly hard to live by. but if you can more often than not make your decisions by hell yes or no,
Starting point is 00:11:30 things will straighten out for you, I promise. Not easy. I'm still not there all the way. But it feels damn good when it's a hell yes or no scenario, and you can live by that, I promise. So what happens when you get this right? Well, living this way changes everything. You don't become less successful.
Starting point is 00:11:49 You become differently successful. You might make less or more money. Doesn't matter. You might have a smaller network or a deeper one. Also, doesn't matter. You may achieve fewer things or more meaningful things. Also, doesn't matter. There's one thing that will definitely happen
Starting point is 00:12:07 and it's something I never expected. You will start living aligned with your actual values. You will find fulfillment and purpose and meaning and ultimately happiness in exactly what comes out. because it will happen the way you want it to. And you give other people permission to do the same thing. You become proof that there's another way to live. Your kids see it, your friends see it, your colleagues see it.
Starting point is 00:12:33 And slowly, quietly, you start changing the conversation about what success actually means. That thing I didn't expect, I'm happier. Not in the everything is perfect way. That'll never be the case. But in a I know who I am and what I'm building way. in a I can handle whatever comes because I'm grounded and what actually matters to me way.
Starting point is 00:12:56 It's why I do this YouTube channel. More than any achievement, any income level, any external validation, that's what success actually looks like. The grind will always be there waiting for you to come back, I promise. But once you've tasted what it feels like to build a life that's actually yours, you won't want to go back.
Starting point is 00:13:17 It's a freedom that you can never, unexperience. So if this resonated with you, I want you to do something for me. Take that exercise that I mentioned, the me versus them list and actually do it. Most won't. But if you do it,
Starting point is 00:13:34 if you do it, you will find insights that I promise will change the way you operate. And if you want to go deeper on this stuff, I've got more content coming on the peak framework and how to build a life. that's actually sustainable and filled with success.
