Starting point is 00:00:01 Ugh, we're so done with New Year, New You. This year, it's more you on Bumble. More of you shamelessly sending playlists, especially that one filled with show tunes. More of you finding Gemini's because you know you always like them. More of you dating with intention because you know what you want. And you know what? We love that for you. Someone else will too. Be more you this year and find them on Bumble.
Starting point is 00:00:27 Consider this is a daily news podcast, and lately, the news is about a big question. How much can one guy change? They want change. What will change look like for energy? Drill, baby, drill. Schools? Take the Department of Education, close it. Health care?
Starting point is 00:00:44 Better and less expensive. Follow coverage of a changing country. Promises made, promises kept. We're going to keep our promises. On Consider This from NPR. Listen on the iHeartRadio app or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, everyone. It's Katie Couric.
Starting point is 00:01:00 Well, the election is in the homestretch, right in time for a new season of my podcast, Next Question. I'm bringing in some FOKs, friends of Katie's, to help me out, like Ezra Klein, Jen Psaki, Astead Herndon. But we're also going to have some fun, thanks to some of my friends like Samantha Bee and Charlemagne the God. We're going to take some viewer questions as well. I mean, isn't that what democracy is all about? Check out our new season of Next Question with me, Katie Couric, on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. First Date Follow-Up.
Starting point is 00:01:38 It's time for your First Date Follow-Up. And on the phone right now is Matthew. And Matthew isn't getting a call back from a woman named Sharina. And it said just like that, Sharina. I don't know why I said it that way, but Matthew, what's up? How are you? Uh, I mean, I've been better. I'm doing okay though. All right. So you said that you went out with a girl named Sharina and now she's not getting back to you. Yeah. I mean, you know, typical COVID romance. We met on Tinder.
Starting point is 00:02:08 You know, where else are you going to meet people these days? We chatted for a while and everything. One of the million other dating apps. That or Bumble. Anywhere. Yeah, well, you know what I mean. Like going out and like actually meeting people like sort of randomly or just going to bars isn't quite back and swinging things yet.
Starting point is 00:02:28 Yeah, for sure. So, you know, it's hit or miss on there. But like we hit it off and we were like chatting back and forth and sort of kind of harking back to like the, you know, virus. We couldn't really figure out where we wanted to go and what we wanted to do. And so ultimately ended up deciding that she would come over. I'd make dinner and watch a movie. That's a very personable date. That's kind of what I've noticed since COVID.
Starting point is 00:02:55 A lot of people are having their first dates just at each other's houses because there's not many places to go, which could be a good thing or a bad thing. In my opinion, that's a better date. How did the date at your house go? Well, I want to know what you made for dinner. Cacio e Pepe. It's just a black pepper pasta with like- That sounds made up. I've never heard of that before.
Starting point is 00:03:13 That sounds like you made that name up. Oh, well, either way, it's only like four or five ingredients. It's not like, trust me, it sounds a lot fancier. It sounds like you made lemon chicken and then you made up a name for it to sound fancy. Yeah, well, basically, the Italians made up the name, but either way, yeah, it sounds fancier than it is, I think. Did that impress her? Well, I mean, it did seem to impress her. I mean, any man who's cooking cappuccino, I don't even know how you say it.
Starting point is 00:03:42 How do you say it? Cacio Pepe? Your name's better, Alex. Sounds like a winner to me. Other than the food, how was the date, though? Well, I mean, it went great. We watched a movie, had a bottle of wine, chatted a little bit, cuddled a little bit. It just seemed to really connect.
Starting point is 00:04:02 It was an easy conversation. It just seemed real comfortable and natural. Okay. And how did things end between you two? We had a brief little kiss and talked about getting together again. That was the last I really heard from her. She let me know she got home. Did you actually organize another date with her? We talked about making tentative plans. We didn't have like set plans. Okay, and how long ago was that?
Starting point is 00:04:31 I mean now it's probably been about a week and a half. And I'm assuming you've reached out in that time. I reached out a couple of times, but that I didn't want to get... Stalker-ish. Yeah, how did you reach out? By text or when she was walking down the street, reached out and grabbed her arm and was like, hey, why aren't you calling me back? Because there's two differences.
Starting point is 00:04:49 There's a big difference between the two. The safer of the two. I just texted her. Okay. And you haven't heard anything? Nope. All right. And do you don't know why at all?
Starting point is 00:05:00 No awkward part in the night? No. And I mean, she's not active on the app, so I don't know. She found her boyfriend. She found the love of her life. I hope not. I mean, we had a great day, and I mean, I could really see myself falling for this girl.
Starting point is 00:05:14 Do you think it's the fact that when the clock struck 1130, you said it's 1130 yoga time, and then you grabbed your yoga mat and started doing yoga in front of the TV? No, man. That didn't happen. Okay. You sound like the kind of guy that would do that. Really? That's why I'm asking.
Starting point is 00:05:31 All right. So it's none of that. Not at all. Any other possibilities? I don't know. I mean, I've been over it all in my head like a million times. And, like, I think it went pretty well. But, like, maybe it all went like terrible and
Starting point is 00:05:47 I just have no clue I mean sometimes you think and you think something went great and then you talk to the other person they're like no that was one of the worst nights of my life so she might she might not have just liked you you know that's what I always say sometimes too and that's why people ghost I mean right in the middle of your first date follow up. And if you're just joining us, Matthew is on the phone. And Matthew wants us to call a woman named Sharina. They met on Tinder. And for the first date, she came over to his house.
Starting point is 00:06:15 He made some kind of fancy dinner that we still don't really know how to pronounce. What was it called, Matthew? Chacha el pepe. Yeah, right. It's good and it's simple. Right. Some sort of made up dish. It sounds like Speedy Gonzalez or something. Chachaacio Pepe. Absolutely. It's good and it's simple. Right. Some sort of made up dish. It sounds like Speedy Gonzalez or something.
Starting point is 00:06:28 Cacio Pepe. So he made that and then they hung out for the evening. They kissed a little bit. She left, texted him when she got home and that's the last he's heard from her. So we're going to get her on the phone now and see if we can find out what happened. Are you ready, Matthew? Yeah, man. As ready as I'll ever be.
Starting point is 00:06:44 Okay. Here we go. Hello? Hi, may I speak to Sharina, please? Yeah, this is her. Hello, Sharina. This is Jubal from The Jubal Show. Well, hello, everyone. Why are you calling me? Calling you because we do a segment on the show called The First Date Follow-Up. It's where if you go out on a date with someone and then end up ghosting them, they can email us to call you and ask you why. So we got an email about you from Matthew.
Starting point is 00:07:28 Oh, yeah. I remember him. Okay. Okay. Can you tell us about Matthew? What do you think about Matthew? I mean, yeah, we, well, how much do you guys know about the date? I know that he made you some kind of dish with a fancy name, steak
Starting point is 00:07:46 carapete. Yeah, it was like a pasta dish. It was pretty good. I mean, I enjoyed it. Okay. Yeah. So he said he made you that and then you guys watched a movie. There was a little bit of light snuggling. Yeah. Yeah. He said that he got up at 1130 and did yoga in front of the TV, which you thought was kind of weird. Did that happen? I must have been in the bathroom during that part. I don't remember that. I made that up. That didn't happen. And then he says that you guys had like a little kiss at the end of the evening. You text him when you got home and that's the last he heard from you. So he's wondering why, because I guess he really liked you.
Starting point is 00:08:22 Oh yeah. I mean, it was a fine date and everything. We did, like, share a bottle of wine. Oh. And, like, there's just sort of a weird red flag with it where I, you know, had one glass of wine. And then I went to go get another one, and the bottle was already gone. He drank it when you were gone? Yeah, he, like, drank the whole bottle of wine by himself. Wait, are you sure that it was the same bottle?
Starting point is 00:08:52 I'm pretty sure, yeah. Was he drunk? I mean, yeah, but, I mean, we were watching a movie, so we weren't really able to talk a lot during the movie. So you couldn't tell if he was, like, slurring his words? Yeah, exactly. He's like, oh, great movie. So did it just turn you off that he drank a whole bottle of wine himself? Yeah, it was just sort of like a red flag.
Starting point is 00:09:13 You must be like some sort of heavy drinker. And, you know, I just, I'm not into that. So when you say you went to go get another bottle, like you left to go to the store to get another bottle of wine? No, I just like went to the kitchen. Oh, and he was like pound went to the kitchen to grab another. Oh, and he was, like, pounded it. Yeah, basically.
Starting point is 00:09:30 Oh, my God. That's impressive. Who pounds wine? That sounds like it would hurt. Yeah, I mean, I'm sure someone can get pretty buzzed off of, like, one bottle of wine. So you think that he just drinks a little too much for you then? Yeah, basically. He had, like, one of those, like, bar those like bar carts and it was like filled with alcohol. And like you could tell that he definitely drinks pretty often and just has like a lot of drinks.
Starting point is 00:09:55 We should probably ask him if he drinks a lot. Yeah, no, I'm okay. Like there's a reason I'm not calling him back. All right. Well, the good thing is you don reason I'm not calling him back. All right. Well, the good thing is you don't even have to call him back right now because we kind of did that for you. He's actually on the line listening and wants to talk to you. Oh.
Starting point is 00:10:12 Wait, what? Yeah. Hey. Yeah. No, I'm here. Oh, yeah. You sound hammered. What happened?
Starting point is 00:10:19 You do sound hammered. Did you drink a bottle of wine in the time we got her on the phone? Oh, no. No, I just feel on the phone? Oh, no, man. No, I just feel terrible. Like, no, I'm not even a big drinker. Like, I'm a nervous drinker. Like, I was super nervous, and I guess I didn't realize, like, I drank as much wine as I did. Everybody sounds drunk to me right now.
Starting point is 00:10:40 I'm not drunk at all. I'm so sorry. When I get nervous, I guess I drink a little bit quicker and faster just out of nerves. And those bottles on my bar, those are for people brought over for parties like a year ago. And it's just been sitting there. I guess I didn't realize I pounded that bottle of wine. I mean, I guess I noticed when I got up to use the bathroom that, like, I was a little tipsy, but... Couldn't walk straight? I mean, you would know if you drank that much, right?
Starting point is 00:11:14 So I just had a lot of, like, bad issues with people who drank a lot and, like, continue to drink a lot. So, you know, I'm just really not interested in that. Sure. I guess I downed the first one, but we got that second bottle and I like hardly touched that. Like once I realized I was tipsy, I cut back immediately. I mean, did you not notice that I barely had any of the other bottle we opened? Uh, no, I, I mean, I was pretty shocked by the first bottle being gone that I... So you were just sitting there the whole time I, I mean, I was pretty shocked by the first bottle being gone that I, so you were just sitting there the whole time, like, oh great, this guy's about to get hammered
Starting point is 00:11:49 and I'm with an alcoholic on his coffee table. Yeah. I mean, the reality of it was like, the only reason I was like nervously drinking is cause you know, super attracted to you. And I mean mean you walked in the door you looked better than your photos like we were having a great conversation and I mean everything about you and was just awesome and I guess I was so nervous that I was going to screw it up that I ended up just pounding wine but you were so nervous you're going to screw it up that I ended up just pounding wine. You were so nervous you were going to screw it up that you screwed it up.
Starting point is 00:12:26 That's what it sounds like. Aw, I mean, that's really sweet. I guess I never really thought of it like that. Well, now that you're thinking of it like that, would you like to go on another date with Matthew? We'll pay for it. Hey, just give me another chance. Let me show you that I'm not an alcoholic and that I don't have a drinking problem.
Starting point is 00:12:49 The fun we had before the first bottle of wine was gone. That's the real me. Just give me one more chance, I promise. What do you think, Sharina? One more chance. Yeah, sure. Okay. Oh, good.
Starting point is 00:13:07 Nice. Nice. Congratulations, Matthew. Thanks, guys. Thank you. Thank you. I promise you we'll have a great time and I won't get drunk. Well, I mean, I've heard that before, so let's not get crazy now. All right. Well, let us know how it goes. Enjoy your date. And Matthew, go have a drink to celebrate, all right? I'm not going to have any drinks, I promise. Jubal's First Date Follow-Up. We're so done with New Year, New You.
