Starting point is 00:00:00 You're listening to an iHeart Podcast. I'm Andrea Gunning, host of the podcast Betrayal. Police Lieutenant Joel Kern used his badge to fool everyone. Most of all, his wife, Caroline. He texted, I've ruined our lives. You're going to want to divorce me. How far would he go to cover up what he'd done? The fact that you lied is absolutely
Starting point is 00:00:26 horrific and quite frankly, I question how many other women are out there that may bring forward allegations in the future. Listen to Betrayal on the iHeart radio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Have you ever thought about going voiceover? I'm Hope Woodard, a comedian, creator, and seeker of male validation. I'm also the girl behind voiceover, the movement that exploded in 2024. You might hear that term and think it's about celibacy, but to me, voiceover is about understanding yourself outside of sex and relationships. It's flexible, it's customizable, and it's a personal process.
Starting point is 00:01:11 Singleness is not a waiting room. You are actually at the party right now. Let me hear it. Listen to VoiceOver on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I've seen a lot of stuff over 30 years, you know, some very despicable crime and things that are kind of tough to wrap your head around. And this ranks right up there in the pantheon of Rhode Island fraudsters. I've always been told I'm a really good listener, right? And I maximized that while I was lying. I'm Debi Brown, healer, wellbeing expert, teacher, and fellow seeker.
Starting point is 00:01:45 Listen to Deep Cover, The Truth About Sarah on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Being able to say, I feel like crying, so I will cry. Today, I'm a little depressed. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Deeply Well is a sanctuary for your healing. I'm Debi Brown, healer, wellbeing expert, teacher, and fellow seeker. And each week, we explore what it means to become whole through soul-expanding conversations and practices. Today, wow, I feel really powerful and ready to serve and use my skills.
Starting point is 00:02:20 And it's like, that's the heart of what it is to be an authentic woman. To hear this and more ways to prioritize your piece, listen to Deeply Well from the Black Effect Podcast Network on the iHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. AT&T Connecting Changes Everything Normally it's time for your first day of up right now except in case you missed yesterday on the show we did to catch a cheater which we always do and this happened. No Taylor like I'm not cheating on you like this isn't anything devious I'm trying to
Starting point is 00:02:57 do everything is fine I mean we've been a minute since we've been into it together but that's okay. Like we'll get there. Tell her you're going to fix it. Tell her that's what you want. Let's reassure people. Yeah. Like I love you and I want to be with you forever. And I know we'll get through this little moment.
Starting point is 00:03:18 Okay. I'm just, I'm so sorry. I, I'm thinking that you would have cheated on me. And then right after that, actually while she was still on the phone But we couldn't get her back on the phone Samantha called and Samantha is sure that that dude is her husband Samantha hi. Yes. I've been trying to call in this like entire time. Okay That sounds identical to my no that is my husband That sounds identical to my, no, that is my husband.
Starting point is 00:03:46 What? What? That's my, I'm like, I'm so confused. I'm shaking. I don't know what's going on. I don't know why my husband's on the radio with you guys. So the call that we just did with- Yeah, and then he's saying he's married to this woman. I don't understand, that's my husband. I don't understand. That's my husband.
Starting point is 00:04:06 Your husband is Matt. That's my husband, Matt. Yes. Yes. I can't believe this. That's that can't be true. Right. Samantha's on the phone with us right now. We worked it out so we can talk to Taylor in a second so that they can talk. But Samantha, you're still sure that that's your husband? Yeah, I've I've slept on it. Like I've calmed down a bit, but I'm I am even more sure that's my husband.
Starting point is 00:04:30 And now I'm like entering the anger territory. But did you see your husband yesterday? No, he's out of town. He's out of town. OK, where is he right now? Still out of town? Yeah, he said he's in California. But before hearing this, did you think he was cheating on you?
Starting point is 00:04:47 No, I really didn't. I suspected in the past. I know he's cheated on other like previous girlfriends and, you know, but I thought once we got married, that that would all end. And I'm not like entirely surprised. And I hate that I'm saying that. Yeah, I wouldn't put it past them Yeah, did you think about asking him? I?
Starting point is 00:05:08 Honestly, I think he'll try to like explain it away and I like all the pastimes I Want I wanted to catch him I don't think I I want to have something to stay in his face and like And he can't explain his way out of I have his phone number can you is there any way like if you know I mean obviously you would know his phone number so I can compare it to what I have and we go that's a good idea person yeah unless he's got burner energy yes all right I've got it's 745 145 It is the same phone number. Oh Wow Thanks, Samantha. I'm Sorry, we have to talk to yeah, cuz you know his
Starting point is 00:05:52 Girlfriend who I'm sure you know before we talked to her she obviously has no idea. He's married And so he's run game on her so you know I guess not yeah I just want to say it's not her fault. She has no idea Okay, she thought he was cheating on her yes. Yeah, she doesn't. I just want to say it's not her fault. She has no idea. Okay. She thought he was cheating on her. Yeah, she thought he was cheating on her and then you heard it and called up and that's your husband. All right, cool.
Starting point is 00:06:14 Well, we'll play a song, come back, and then we will call Taylor and get you on the phone with her so that you can talk to her about the fact that the dude that was on to catch the cheater yesterday, who was her boyfriend, who sounded very faithful and like it was really honest, really honest is actually your husband. Okay. Oh my God.
Starting point is 00:06:35 Yup. Okay. Well, play a song, come back and get your To Catch a Cheater next. I'm Andrea Gunning, host of the podcast Betrayal. Police Lieutenant Joel Kern used his badge to fool everyone. Most of all, his wife, Caroline. He texted, I've ruined our lives. You're going to want to divorce me.
Starting point is 00:06:55 Caroline's husband was living another life behind the scenes. He betrayed his oath to his family and to his community. She said you left bruises, pulled her hair, that type of thing. No. How far would Joel go to cover up what he'd done? You're unable to keep track of all your lies,
Starting point is 00:07:17 and quite frankly, I question how many other women may bring forward allegations in the future. This season of betrayal investigates one officer's decades of deception. Lies that left those closest to him questioning everything they thought they knew. Listen to Betrayal on the iHeart radio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Have you ever thought about going voiceover? I'm Hope Woodard, a comedian, creator, and seeker of male validation.
Starting point is 00:07:50 To most people, I'm the girl behind voiceover, the movement that exploded in 2024. Voiceover is about understanding yourself outside of sex and relationships. It's more than personal, it's political, it's societal, and at times, it's far from what I originally intended it to be. These days, I'm interested in expanding what it means to be voiceover, to make it customizable for anyone who feels the need to explore their relationship to relationships. I'm talking to a lot of people who will help us
Starting point is 00:08:25 think about how we love each other. It's a very, very normal experience to have times where a relationship is prioritizing other parts of that relationship that are being naked together. How we love our family. I've spent a lifetime trying to get my mother to love me, but the price is too high. And how we love ourselves.
Starting point is 00:08:43 Singleness is not a waiting room. You are actually at the party right now. Let me hear it. Just listen to VoiceOver on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. She was a decorated veteran, a Marine who saved her comrades, a hero. She was stoic, modest, tough,
Starting point is 00:09:07 someone who inspired people. Everyone thought they knew her, until they didn't. I remember sitting on her couch and asking her, is this real, is this real, is this real, is this real? I just couldn't wrap my head around what kind of person would do that to another person that was getting treatment, that was, you know, dying. This is a story all about trust and about a woman named Sarah Kavanaugh. I've always been told I'm a really good listener, right, and I maximized that while I was lying. Listen to deep cover, The Truth About Sarah
Starting point is 00:09:47 on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A lot of times the big economic forces we hear about on the news show up in our lives in small ways. Three or four days a week, I would buy two cups of banana pudding, but the price has gone up.
Starting point is 00:10:12 So now I only buy one. The demand curve in action. And that's just one of the things we'll be covering on everybody's business from Bloomberg Business Week. I'm Max Chafkin. And I'm Stacey Vanek-Smith. Every Friday, we will be diving into the biggest stories in business, taking a look at what's going on, why it matters, and how it shows up in our everyday lives.
Starting point is 00:10:32 With guests like Businessweek editor Brad Stone, Sports Reporter Randall Williams, and consumer spending expert Amanda Mull, we'll take you inside the boardrooms, the backrooms, even the signal chats that make our economy tick. Hey, I want to learn about VeChain. I want to buy some blockchain or whatever it is that they're doing. So listen to everybody's business on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcast, or wherever you get your podcasts. Right in the middle of To Catch a Cheater. And if you're just joining us, I know normally right now it's a first day follow up, but today is a little different. Because yesterday we did To Catch a Cheater at this time, and it was with this girl Taylor and her boyfriend Matt, who she thought was cheating, called him.
Starting point is 00:11:11 Sounded all good, like he wasn't cheating, but during that whole thing, Samantha was trying to call us, and Samantha is his wife. Mind blowing. And Samantha heard the whole call, called us and was like no that's my husband and And so she hasn't talked to Taylor yet So we're about to call Taylor and get her on the phone with Samantha so that they can try to confer
Starting point is 00:11:34 Yeah, I mean I confirm. I mean, you know 99.9 percent sure exactly Alright, Samantha. Are you ready for us to call Taylor so you guys can talk? Yeah already. Okay. I'm gonna I'm gonna call right now. Here we go Hello, hey Taylor, it's the Jubal show So much for helping me out are you you just like checking in? What's up? Yeah Calling to check in with you. Um, have you listened back to any of the show at all yesterday? Oh, no Doing like okay. Sorry. I promise I'm a listener though. No, no, it's fine Thank you very much. Yeah
Starting point is 00:12:22 No The reason I'm asking is because yesterday when you were doing the to catch a cheater Something happened and I had wondered if you had heard about it already No Okay After you hung up actually during the whole to catch a cheater Someone was trying to call us and didn't realize it until like after you had already hung up I tried to get your attention and they're on the phone right now and
Starting point is 00:12:46 They want to talk to you about the to catch cheater yesterday Okay, her name is Samantha Samantha either Yeah, yeah, I'm here. Yeah, so Samantha Taylor meet each other. Yeah Hi. Oh my god. This is incredibly awkward. Um, I was kind of hoping that you had heard a little bit on the radio, so I didn't have to like do this. And oh my God, this is a hard, this is a hard thing to tell someone. Um, so I'm not cheating. He is cheating on you because he's my husband. And I was listening and I heard him.
Starting point is 00:13:25 It was 100% him. I was trying to call him the entire time. And then he's like explaining a way of a business trip or something. And it just, it made no sense, but I've verified with, with them and it's, it's 100% my mat and married. And, and so I, I know it's, but we've been together for like three years. Are you serious? Yeah, for three years. I mean, we moved in together six months ago. Like, are you, oh my God. Okay. I gotta say, as possible to this thing, I'm not mad at you.
Starting point is 00:13:59 I am just like, I cannot, I cannot believe that. I like it. I'm like, not gonna like emotional, but like. He's married? Yeah. So we, you've been together for three years, well, we've been married for five. Oh my God. Five years, we've been together for 10.
Starting point is 00:14:18 So, 10 years. I feel like it's like some type of like really messed up joke right now, Like, I don't know. Taylor, yeah, it's not a joke. She called us yesterday and we were able to confirm a couple things with her. That seemed pretty convincing. You can ask her questions to confirm it too, if you want.
Starting point is 00:14:39 Yeah, I know that. I know everything about that man. Except this, I guess, but I can't. I mean, I don't know what to even ask you to confirm. I mean like, you know, just, I guess, I mean brown hair, green eyes. Birthday? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:55 When's his birthday? April 5th. Okay. Is that his birthday tater to you? Yes, that is his birthday. Always has his head in the book, always reading a crime. What was that? His mom's is his birthday. Um, always has his head in the book. Always reading a crime. What was that? His mom's name is Teresa. Teresa, his mom? Yeah. Oh, you both know his mother? Yeah. I've met her twice. What? Oh my God. Does she know who
Starting point is 00:15:18 you are, Taylor? Did he introduce you as a girlfriend? Yeah, yeah, he did. He was like, this is my girlfriend too. Wow. I mean, I know I'm, we don't get along me and me and his family. We don't get along at all. We've never gotten along, but that's like a new low. That's a new low. Crazy thing to let your son do. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:41 It's just like so toxic. I mean, I know one way that will completely convince you. He has like, from when he used to play baseball, he has like a giant like kind of scar on the inside of his leg. What the fuck? Like, are you kidding me right now? I, what the actual is going on? This is ridiculous.
Starting point is 00:15:59 Like I know that like everything you're saying is true, but it just does not make sense to me in any way, shape or form. It doesn't make sense to me either. It really doesn't. This man is living a double life. He's f***ed up obviously. His whole family's f***ed up. So Samantha, he's told you he's out of town right? Uh-huh. Yeah he travels he does travel a lot for work. Okay. Three weeks out of the month. And Taylor, I'm just gonna identify you guys so people know, Samantha is the wife of this guy, Taylor is his girlfriend of three years. Taylor, has he been to your place?
Starting point is 00:16:35 You guys moved in together six months ago, or is he also out of town on business? He's out of town right now. Oh my gosh, if you tell me there's a third, I'm gonna lose my mind. Okay well how about this I mean do you guys obviously want to catch him right? I mean you know Samantha you heard this yesterday and Taylor he lied to you yesterday. I can't I've been a good ass. I've had 24 hours of like fear to like completely feeling okay about it and now just being so completely angry I just want like complete closure at this point.
Starting point is 00:17:07 I'm sorry. Yeah. Um, do you guys want to do a to catch a cheater tomorrow together and we don't even have to do all the like flower stuff. We can just have you both on so he can be caught. He deserves it. I want anything to catch him, embarrass him, whatever. I'm in. I don't know. I don't know if I can do this again. This man will keep doing this. And if he's out of town and has someone else, like you know how good he is at explaining
Starting point is 00:17:38 things away. I'm sure you can't let him get away with this. I need your, I honestly, I need your help because I want to throw everything in his face and I need your help. Okay. Yeah, I'll do it. Okay. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:17:52 Well, so when you guys talk to him today, as hard as it's going to be, try not to tip him off that you guys met and everything. Okay. Act normal. Yeah. Yeah. And I think that is the right decision to do it, Taylor, because I mean, also you don't want him to talk you back into normal. Yeah. Yeah. And I think that is the right decision to do it, Taylor. Cause I mean, also you don't want him to talk you back into staying. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:09 If he tries to twist this in any way, what do you say he is a psychopath, a sociopath? I don't know. The kind that can just lie to people's faces and have two lives. He's a cheater and he's about to get caught tomorrow. Okay. Well, we will talk to you guys this same time tomorrow then and we'll call him and you guys can confront him. Great. Okay all right Taylor I'm really sorry Samantha I'm also sorry. Oh my gosh yeah. Thank you. Thank you. We'll talk to you
Starting point is 00:18:35 guys tomorrow okay? Breathe, wine. I'm Andrea Gunning, host of the podcast Betrayal. Police Lieutenant Joel Kern used his badge to fool everyone.
